Breaking: Northam’s Gun Ban Bill Rejected By Senate Committee

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s sweeping gun, magazine, and suppressor ban was defeated in the state senate’s Judiciary Committee Monday morning in front of a crowd of gun owners and Second Amendment supporters. Four Democrats joined every Republican on the committee in rejecting HB961, which had narrowly advanced out of the House of Delegates just before a legislative deadline last week.

Committee chairman John Edwards joined fellow Democrats Chap Petersen, Creigh Deeds, Scott Surovell, and every Republican on the committee to send the bill to the Virginia Crime Commission for further study, which kills the bill’s chances for this legislative session.

Spain: European Court Approves Summary Deportations of Illegal Migrants

The Strasbourg-based court — which has jurisdiction over 47 European countries, and whose rulings are binding on all 27 member states of the European Union — ruled that in order for migrants to benefit from certain human rights protections, such as access to lawyers, interpreters and the right to remain in Europe, they must first enter European territory in a legal, as opposed to an illegal, manner.

The ruling is being viewed as a major victory for those who believe that sovereign nation states have the right to decide who is and is not allowed to enter their territory.

"The ECHR's ruling determines that a nation state has the right to defend its borders. When someone is dedicated to violating those borders, the nation state has the right to return that person to their place of origin as quickly as possible." — Iván Espinosa de los Monteros, spokesman for the Vox Party, November 13, 2020.

It remains unclear if the ECHR's ruling will have a deterrent effect. Migrants, often using extreme violence, are increasingly using the tactic of mass attacks against the border fences in Ceuta and Melilla in an effort to overwhelm border police

Irish security services believe they were sent by Russia's elite foreign intelligence agency, the GRU, to check out the fiber-optic cables for weak points, The Sunday Times reported.

The country has also now ramped up security at landing sites along the Irish coast after the agents were reportedly also seen scouting out Dublin Port.

A sprawling network of transatlantic cables run under the world's oceans to power the internet, texts, calls, and global financial transactions.

About 97% of all intercontinental data is transferred through these cables, according to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

Experts have warned the country could be the "new battle space of the future" because it's a global internet hub and a base for many worldwide tech firms.

Ireland is a prime location for these undersea maps because of its proximity to both America and Europe.

Energy Department shakes up cyber leadership with appointment of ex-NSA official

Department of Energy officials have tapped a veteran of the National Security Agency to be the department’s top cyber official and lead an office that helps protect U.S. industry from hacking threats.

In a message to department staff Thursday reviewed by CyberScoop, Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette said Alexander Gates’ decades of experience in signals intelligence and cyber operations would be critical in running the department’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response.

Gates replaces Karen Evans, a former Office of Management and Budget official and DOE chief information officer, who was sworn in as assistant secretary of Energy for cybersecurity, energy security and emergency response in September 2018. Gates will have “delegated authority” to lead the cybersecurity office, meaning he can do so without being a Senate-confirmed assistant secretary.

Lawmakers Introduce Bill That Would Stop Grants to Sanctuary States That Give Driver’s Licenses to Illegal Immigrants

House and Senate Republicans have introduced legislation that would block certain federal funds from sanctuary states that allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.

The Stop Greenlighting Driver Licenses for Illegal Immigrants Act would stop Justice Department (DOJ) grants that are a top source of federal criminal justice funding for states.

The legislation would target states that “defy federal immigration enforcement or that allow illegal aliens to get driver licenses without proof of lawful presence” and those that “prohibit or restrict a local or State government entity or official from collecting or sending to or receiving from the Department of Homeland Security immigration enforcement information.”

In Senate, the legislation is being introduced by Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn and co-sponsored by Sens. Tom Cotton, R-Ark.; Kevin Cramer, R-N.D.; Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.; Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga.; Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, and Mike Rounds, R-S.D. Companion legislation is being introduced in the house by Colorado Rep. Ken Buck. His bill is co-sponsored by 21 other lawmakers.

“Tennesseans know all too well what can happen when illegal immigrants are granted driver licenses,” Blackburn said in a statement. “While Tennessee and many other states prohibit driver licenses for illegal aliens, a growing number of states are moving in the opposite direction and unleashing dangerous open borders policies. Immigrants must follow the proper federal process and obtain citizenship or lawful status before obtaining a state driver license.”

“In America, no one is above the law,” she added.

Blackburn’s office estimated that states that issued licenses to illegal immigrants received nearly $53 million that would be impacted by this new legislation during the 2019 fiscal year.

The NCSL reports that fifteen states and the District of Columbia have enacted laws to allow unauthorized immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses. These states—California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Utah, Vermont and Washington—issue a license if an applicant provides certain documentation, such as a foreign birth certificate, foreign passport, or consular card and evidence of current residency in the state.

“In 2019, New Jersey, New York and Oregon became the most recent states to enact legislation extending driver’s licenses and identification cards to those without proof of lawful presence,” their report noted.

Update (1030ET): For what seemed like weeks after the outbreak began, Tibet repeatedly reported that it had zero confirmed cases of the virus, even after it had spread to every other Chinese province (there are 31 in total).

Now, online rumors might shed some light on why: It's not that the virus hadn't arrived, it's that party leaders in Tibet - for whatever reason (lack of resources, a motivation to impress Beijing) - didn't report the full breadth of the problem.

Unconfirmed reports claim 5 have died in Tibet from the virus.

The Death Of Free Speech: Zuckerberg Asks Governments For Instructions On “What Discourse Should Be Allowed”

I have written for years on the effort of European countries to expand their crackdown on free speech globally through restrictions on social media and Internet speech. It appears that Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has relented in what may prove the death knell for free speech in the West. Zuckerberg seems to relent in asking governments for regulations stipulating what speech will be permitted on Facebook and other platforms. It is the ultimate victory of France, Germany, and England in their continuing attack on free expression though hate speech laws and speech regulation.

Zuckerberg told an assembly of Western leaders Saturday at the Munich Security Conference that “There should be more guidance and regulation from the states on basically — take political advertising as an example — what discourse should be allowed?” He did add: “Or, on the balance of free expression and some things that people call harmful expression, where do you draw the line?” The problem is that his comments were received as accepting that government will now dictate the range of free speech. What is missing is the bright line rule long maintained by the free speech community.

As tragically demonstrated in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, speech regulations inevitably expand with time. The desire to silence one’s critics becomes insatiable for both governments and individuals.

Zuckerberg is facing great pressure, including from Democratic leaders in the United States, to regulate political speech and he seems to be moving away from the bright-line position against such regulation as a principle. Instead, he is accepting the fluid concept of “balanced” regulations that has always preceded expanding speech codes and criminalization:

“There are a lot of decisions in these areas that are really just balances between different social values. It’s about coming up with an answer that society feels is legitimate and that they can get behind and understand that you drew the line here on the balance of free expression and safety. It’s not just that there’s one right answer. People need to feel like, ‘OK, enough people weighed in, and that’s why the answer should be this, and we can get behind that.’”

Gunmen killed at least 24 people and wounded 18 more during an attack on a protestant church in the village of Pansi, in the north of Burkina Faso, announced the governor of the Sahel region, Colonel Salfo Kaboré.

A group of "armed terrorists" burst into the village of Pansi, in Yagha, a volatile province near the Niger border, “and attacked the peaceful local population after having identified them and separated them from non-residents,” Colonel Salfo Kabore said in a statement sent to AFP.

The Sunday attack occurred during weekly church service, according to the AFP.

Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world, and it's also home to a brutal jihadist insurgency which is growing across the Sahel region.

Since 2015, around 750 people have been killed in Burkina, and around 600,000 people have fled their homes as Christian churches have been attacked, amid other acts of Jihadi violence. The north of the country has a mixed population of Christians and Muslims, and for ages the two groups lived harmoniously side by side. But as radicalization and Islamic extremism have swept the area, their easy peace has come to an end.

This isn't even the first violent attack on a church this month: On Feb. 10, suspected jihadists in Sebba took seven people hostage inside the home of a pastor. Later, five bodies were found, including the body of the pastor, according to the local governor. Reports circling on twitter claim the pastor of the church attacked on Sunday was targeted by the attackers.

Due to a weak military and almost nonexistent rule of law, attacks like this happen frequently in the region. More than 4,000 people in Burkina have been killed in acts of violence perpetrated by Islamic extremist terrorists over the past year.

That's a staggering number.

The FBI file documenting the August 2016 briefing describes two questions asked by candidate Trump as well as comments from Trump and Flynn and exchanges with the briefer from the FBI who was not identified to either Trump or Flynn during the briefing as working on the Crossfire Hurricane team probing Flynn and other members of the Trump campaign.

James A. Baker, the former FBI general counsel, conceded that the briefer “was there on the off chance that somebody said something that might be useful.”

This means the FBI’s controversial Crossfire Hurricane probe team investigating members of the Trump campaign not only directly interfaced with Trump and Flynn without telling them but also recorded their comments in the official case file. Flynn at the time was already a target of the FBI probe.

Moreover, the FBI investigator who conducted the briefing says that he used the occasion as an opportunity to study Flynn’s behavior and mannerisms just in case the FBI needed to eventually conduct a subject interview of Flynn. Indeed, the same investigator himself was the FBI agent who conducted an in-person FBI interview with Flynn on January 24, 2017 in connection with the FBI’s investigation of Flynn.

All those details and more were contained deep inside the Justice Department’s previously released 476-page Inspector General report on the FBI’s Russia collusion investigation.

The details may take on renewed significant amid the reported decision by Attorney General William P. Barr to assigned an outside prosecutor to scrutinize the case against Flynn.

The briefing in question was a standard FBI unclassified “counterintelligence awareness” briefing routinely given to the transition teams for presidential candidates during an election cycle. The briefings were provided to both the Trump and Clinton campaigns. The briefing for Trump and his selected advisors, including Flynn, took place on August 17, 2016.

The FBI investigator told the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) that disgraced FBI agent Peter Strzok was mostly responsible for helping him prepare the briefing with Trump and Flynn.

The investigator said he prepared himself for facing Trump and Flynn in a series of mock briefings attended by both Strzok and FBI attorney Lisa Page, the infamous texting duo who were previously reportedly romantically involved.

The IG report says that Andrew McCabe, who served under Comey as the FBI’s deputy director, “acknowledged that it was possible he was part of a conversation about whether SSA 1 should handle the briefing because of his involvement with Crossfire Hurricane, but said he could not recall any such conversation.”

SSA 1 refers to the unnamed senior member of the Crossfire Hurricane team who conducted the sneaky briefing.

Monday’s disrupted flights were operated by British Airways, the largest airline at the west London hub. Sunday’s disruptions included other airlines as well.

With Hong Kong gripped by shortages amid the coronavirus chaos, an armed gang ambushed a supermarket delivery driver and stole 600 rolls of toilet paper at knifepoint.

As the Covid-19 crisis worsens, many residents in Hong Kong have begun stockpiling toilet paper, cleaning products and basic foods, amid fears of shortages. In particular, authorities have pleaded with the public to not stockpile toilet paper in their homes as it could grow mouldy given the high humidity in the city.

However, the prospect of rationing toilet roll proved too grim for the knife-wielding gang, who held up the delivery truck and swiped HK$1,700 (nearly $220) worth of the coveted goods. Two of the gang were later caught and arrested by police and the entire stash of toilet paper was recovered. Authorities are still hunting the third thief.

So far, there have been at least 57 coronavirus cases confirmed in Hong Kong. In mainland China the death toll has reached over 1,700, with approximately 70,000 cases confirmed.

US Senators Meet Zelensky in Ukraine, Vow Bipartisan Support

A bipartisan group of senators met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv just over a week after the Senate acquitted President Donald Trump on charges he abused his power by asking Ukraine to to investigate his political rivals.

The three lawmakers, Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), met with Zelensky on Feb. 14 in a bid to improve relations with Ukraine following the House-led impeachment inquiry into Trump.

“We just finished a very difficult moment in American politics,” Murphy told reporters after the meeting, adding that although the three senators voted differently in the impeachment trial, they are united in their goal of showing support for Ukraine.

“We are here together because there is no difference between us or between Republicans and Democrats in Congress in our support for Ukraine, for our support for continued funding for Ukraine to defend itself, and our continued support for reform,” he said.

The former Deputy Attorney General under President George H.W. Bush on Monday penned an op-ed in The Atlantic calling for the resignation of William Barr, saying Barr’s “long-held belief in the need for a virtually autocratic executive” clearly illustrates his “unfitness for office.” The op-ed was published one day after more than 1,100 former DOJ officials (cable news legal analysts included) signed on to an open letter also calling for Barr’s resignation.

Donald Ayer, who served as Deputy AG and Principal Deputy Solicitor General under Bush I, wrote that in the last week Barr has proven that he is more of a personal advocate for President Donald Trump than a representative of justice for the American people.

“The evenhanded conduct of the prosecutions of Roger Stone and Michael Flynn by experienced Department of Justice attorneys have been disrupted at the 11th hour by the attorney general’s efforts to soften the consequences for the president’s associates,” Ayer wrote. “More generally, it appears that Barr has recently identified a group of lawyers who he trusts and put them in place to oversee and second-guess the work of the department’s career attorneys on a broader range of cases. And there is no comfort from any of this in Barr’s recent protests about the president’s tweeting. He in no way suggested he was changing course, only that it is hard appear independent when the president is publicly calling for him to follow the path he is on.”

According to Ayer, Barr’s devolution into a presidential protector was inevitable in light of his full-throated belief in a unitary executive theory that essentially places the president above the law, claiming Barr’s tenure has been geared towards destroying the DOJ safeguards built in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal–a pursuit he says is definitively “un-American” in nature.

“Barr’s frontal attack on this system begins with an assault on [post-Watergate AG Edward] Levi’s central premise, that ours must be a ‘government of laws and not men,’ in which no person is above the law,” Ayer wrote. “Even more emphatically, though, Barr has brought with him to the department an extraordinary belief in the need for an all-powerful president that is flatly irreconcilable with Levi’s vision, which restored the Department of Justice to honor and integrity in the mid-’70s. Perhaps most disturbingly, Barr contends that it is virtually impossible for a corrupt president to be held to account by the Department of Justice, or by any independent counsel that it or Congress might appoint.”

Ayer said that Barr should resign or be impeached, a framing that we have seen before.

“Bill Barr’s America is not a place that anyone, including Trump voters, should want to go,” Ayer concluded. “It is a banana republic where all are subject to the whims of a dictatorial president and his henchmen. To prevent that, we need a public uprising demanding that Bill Barr resign immediately, or failing that, be impeached.”

CA School Board Votes To Remove Former President's Name, Replace It with Michelle Obama

A Northern California school board voted Wednesday to rename an elementary school after former first lady Michelle Obama.

West Contra Costa Unified School District’s Board of Education will be renaming Wilson Elementary School, which had originally been named after former President Woodrow Wilson, to Michelle Obama Elementary School because it is supposedly more relatable for today’s students.

Wilson Elementary Parent Teacher Association president Maisha Cole said the students are now more inspired by the former first lady than by the former president.

“They all recognize her, they know her initiatives, healthy eating, you can do it, she’s so encouraging and we wanted somebody to embody that,” Cole told WTTV.

Of course, most of the school’s current students either hadn’t been born or were infants when the Obamas first entered the White House.

A child who is in kindergarten today may have only been 2 years old when former President Barack Obama’s term ended.

The East Bay Times reported that the school is home to roughly 430 students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Classes are currently being held in a temporary location due to the construction of a brand new “state-of-the-art 21st century” school building at its permanent location, the outlet said.

The students are expected to be able to attend the new school this fall.

School board president Stephanie Hernandez-Jarvis expressed her excitement over the school’s new building and its name, particularly highlighting the former first lady’s “values.”

“Naming this school after Michelle Obama is a sign of the school’s rebirth,” Hernandez-Jarvis said in a statement. “We can see the new physical structure being built, but this name change sets high expectations for the students and staff as they enter a new era for this school and this school community.

“The parents and students advocated to rename their school after Michelle Obama because they believe the values our former first lady embodies and the educational, child-centered causes she champions, are representative of what we all aspire to nurture in our school communities.

“She is a role model for our children and we strive to serve our students with the same kind of love, advocacy, and courage that she served our country.”

Dawit Vazquez-Suomala, a student representative on the board, agreed.

SpaceX has successfully launched and deployed 60 more Starlink satellites, bringing the total number of satellites in the network to nearly 300. Jeffrey Epstein crony Ghislaine Maxwell is so impossible to find that a Manhattan judge has taken the rare step of allowing her to be served with a new lawsuit — by email, according to a federal court filing Friday.

Lawyers for Epstein sex-assault-accuser Annie Farmer had griped to federal Judge Debra Freeman that they’ve been trying to find the disgraced British socialite to serve her with the complaint, filed in November, but that she’s done such a good job of hiding that they haven’t been able to get to her, court documents show.

“Plaintiff has attempted to locate and personally serve Maxwell to no avail. Her counsel has conducted extensive public records searches and located various addresses for Maxwell,” Farmer’s lawyers wrote in a Jan. 27 motion imploring Freeman to allow them to serve Maxwell using “alternate” means.

On Wednesday, Freeman granted the motion, acknowledging that Farmer has “adequately demonstrated that personal service would be impracticable” and ordered Maxwell to be served by email and through her lawyers representing her in a lawsuit involving another key Epstein accuser, Virginia Giuffre.

Navyfag here in reply to post 8162904 (lb) regarding Pete Buttplug's military record. Posted this late last bread but this is too important for it to go unnoticed. I was also an officer recruiter at one point in my career, so when I saw his supposed record with all its gaps my bullshit radar immediately flagged it. Let me explain how Navy Officer programs work, at least when I was recruiting around 2013.

Intelligence Officer candidates are required to sign up for at least 4 years Active Duty, 4 years Reserve. One's military record will not have gaps like Pete's does. Barring being medically dismissed or some other misconduct (like Hunter's coke snorting), when you sign that contract you are expected to fill those 4 AD/4 Res years with no gaps. So if you joined, say, Jan 1, 2010, then you would serve AD until at least Jan 1, 2014 and then in the Reserves until Jan 1, 2018. Your record will show a continuous service from Jan 1, 2010 to Jan 1, 2018 or whenever you officially decide to leave the military. and so on, I'm not going to list them all because I can make my point without doing so. The military does allow in special circumstances for a member to leave the service for short periods of time. Example, your father dies and you need time to go take care of putting the family farm up for sale or take care of your sick, elderly mother until other arrangements can be made. But these are extreme circumstances that require more than a few weeks to manage.

Another reason for a gap is you got out as an Enlisted, went to school, go a degree, and now want to come back as an Officer. This isn't Pete's case, but I thought I bring it up nonettheless.

The fact that Pete has this many gaps in his record and each one at least a year in length, this is not normal. It should be one continuous date from Feb 1st, 2010 to May 30, 2016. Even then, there is still as two year contract gap. He should have served either AD or Res until at least Feb 1, 2018. I would know because I transitioned from AD to Res after 6.5 years AD and still had to serve a minimum of 1.5 years in the Reserves before my contract was considered fulfilled and I could legally get out of the military entirely.

Barr taps network of prosecutors to review Russia-Ukraine cases

Attorney General Bill Barr has tapped a growing number of federal prosecutors across the country to review high-profile Russia probes involving Trump associates and consider emerging allegations tied to Ukraine, in a bold but risky move that comes as he faces mounting criticism and even resignation calls from congressional Democrats who allege he's protecting the president.

On Friday, Fox News reported that Barr appointed Jeff Jensen, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, to review the case of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. Justice Department officials told Fox News Jensen would be working hand-in-hand with Brandon Van Grack, the lead prosecutor in the case. It marked the latest example of Barr bringing on a federal prosecutor to examine a politically charged case.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TAPS OUTSIDE PROSECUTOR TO REVIEW HANDLING OF MICHAEL FLYNN CASE

Flynn’s case has gone through years of twists and turns, with sentencing postponed repeatedly over the last two years. Flynn’s supporters have insisted he is innocent but was forced to plead guilty when his son was threatened with prosecution and he exhausted his financial resources.

Flynn pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI about his communications with former Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak as part of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.

But Barr’s move to tap Jensen comes after Flynn and his attorney Sidney Powell last month moved to withdraw his guilty plea, citing “the government’s bad faith, vindictiveness and breach of the plea agreement.” The move to withdraw his plea came just days after the Justice Department reversed course to recommend up to six months of prison time for him, alleging he was not fully cooperating or accepting responsibility for his actions. The DOJ later backed down.

The announcement of Jensen’s appointment came at the end of a dramatic week at the Justice Department related to another Trump associate—Roger Stone.

Federal prosecutors last week recommended a sentence of between 87 and 108 months in prison for Stone after he was convicted on seven counts of obstruction, witness tampering and making false statements to Congress on charges that also stemmed from Mueller’s probe.

But in a stunning reversal, as Fox News first reported, the DOJ overruled the prosecutors on the case, scaling back the proposed sentence for Stone, which immediately led Democrats to accuse Trump of interfering in the process by earlier tweeting about his displeasure with the Justice Department. Trump denied it.

Barr, though, spoke up for DOJ independence when he urged Trump against tweeting on justice matters and said it makes it “impossible” for him to do his job.

In an interview with Breitbart News, Alan Dershowitz claimed he is in possession of documents that will show Barack Obama asked the FBI to investigate an unnamed person on behalf of George Soros. Those documents, he says, will come out during a lawsuit that will be filed in the future. Dershowitz said the only difference between Trump and other presidents influencing the Department of Justice is that Trump is open about it while the others "whispered."

CDC Begins Testing Americans for the Coronavirus—But How?

As my readers know, I’ve been presenting evidence AGAINST the idea that the China “epidemic” is caused by a new coronavirus. (archive here)

Of course, the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control are relentlessly pushing the idea that: this is a spreading epidemic, and it is caused by COVID-19, a new human coronavirus.

Now, the US Centers for Disease Control is rolling out a program to test Americans (e.g., travelers who have been to China). As time passes, the program will likely pull larger numbers of Americans into that net.

The CDC program immediately raises two problems: why bother testing for a virus if it isn’t really causing human disease; and what kind of test is being done?

In this article, I’m focusing on the type of test, and whether it’s accurate, even if you assume the coronavirus is causing disease.

Reading through CDC literature (see also here), I believe the two most prevalent US testing methods are: antibody, and PCR.

Antibody tests are notorious for cross-reactions. This means factors in no way relevant to a given virus can make the test read positive. In that case, the patient would be falsely told he “has the coronavirus.” But it gets worse. Traditionally, antibody tests reading positive were taken as a good sign for the patient: his immune system had contacted a germ and defeated it. Then, starting in 1984, the science was turned upside down: a positive test was, astoundingly, taken to mean the patient was ill or would soon become ill.

The PCR test (which requires excellent technicians who will not make any number of possible mistakes) takes a tissue sample from a patient which might contain a tiny virus particle(s) much too small to be observed—and blows it up many times, so it can be seen. However, the test says nothing reliable about HOW MUCH virus is in the patient’s body. Why is that important? Because millions and millions of replicating virus in the body are necessary to even begin talking about actual illness. A positive PCR test, nevertheless, will be taken to mean the patient “has the epidemic disease.” —An even deeper issue: where is the PRIOR PROOF that the PCR is testing for a virus that actually causes disease?

The prospect of these two tests being done on Americans is not comforting, to say the least. People will be roped into believing they are “epidemic cases,” and therefore need to be isolated, and treated with highly toxic antiviral drugs.

In the event they become ill, from the drugs, they’ll be told “the coronavirus is doing the damage.” In some cases, this will result in even further dosing with the same drugs, at higher levels—a disaster.

A very small percentage of doctors are aware of the profound shortcomings of these two diagnostic tests. Most of them will shrug off their doubts and perform the tests anyway, because refusal would endanger their careers and medical licenses.

This is the sordid drama now unfolding in the American landscape.

It’s not just America. The same tests are being done all over the world.

More than 375,000 of the 473,682 immigrants who were caught illegally crossing the southern border with a family member in fiscal 2019 were released by federal law enforcement into the interior of the United States, according to data obtained by the Washington Examiner.

From Oct. 1, 2018 and Sept. 30, 2019, Border Patrol agents working along the U.S.-Mexico border arrested 851,508 people who entered the country between ports of entry. In addition to the 473,682 people who arrived as part of a family, there were 76,000 unaccompanied children, according to previously released data.

Border Patrol told the Washington Examiner its agents released more than 145,000 family members directly from its stations between March and September 2019, the months that had the highest levels of arrests. People who were released would have been allowed to go anywhere in the country, including those who were not seeking asylum. Customs and Border Protection, under which Border Patrol is housed, does not release data on the number of arrestees who go on to seek asylum, though Department of Homeland Security officials shared last year that it was a low percentage.

Border Patrol made the unusual move last March of releasing people directly from its custody rather than turning people over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. ICE cited two issues that made it difficult to hold families: it lacked the bed space and a 2015 court ruling blocked it from detaining families more than 20 days.

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) — More than 300 American cruise ship passengers, including 14 who tested positive for coronavirus, were being quarantined at military bases in California and Texas on Monday after arriving from Japan on charter flights overnight.

One plane carrying cruise passengers touched down at Travis Air Force Base in Northern California just before midnight Sunday, while another arrived at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas early Monday. The passengers will remain at the bases for two weeks.

Japan’s Defense Minister Taro Kono tweeted earlier that Japanese troops helped transport 340 U.S. passengers on 14 buses from Yokohama port to Tokyo’s Haneda airport. About 380 Americans were on the cruise ship.

The U.S. said it arranged for the evacuation because people on the Diamond Princess were at a high risk of exposure to the new virus that’s been spreading in Asia. For the departing Americans, the evacuation cuts short a 14-day quarantine that began aboard the cruise ship Feb. 5.

The State Department announced later that 14 of the evacuees received confirmation they had the virus but were allowed to board the flight because they had no symptoms. They were being kept isolated from other passengers on the flight, the U.S. State and Health and Human Services said in a joint statement.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, said Sunday that an infected person who shows minimal symptoms could still pass the virus to someone else.

It’s unclear which base the 14 who tested positive for the virus went to.

Officials said the evacuees who arrived at Travis Air Force Base will be housed at a different location from the more than 200 other Americans who were already being quarantined on the base, in a hotel. Those people have been at the base since early February, when they arrived on flights from China.

No Travis airmen will have contact with the passengers, officials said.

Now that they’re in the U.S., the cruise ship passengers must go through another 14 days of quarantine at the military facilities — meaning they will have been under quarantine for a total of nearly four weeks.

Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and Italy were planning similar flights of passengers. Other governments, including Canada and Hong Kong, also will require the passengers to undergo a second 14-day quarantine.

Japan on Monday announced another 99 infections on the Diamond Princess, raising the ship’s total number of cases to 454. Overall, Japan has 419 confirmed cases of the virus, including one death. The United States has confirmed 15 cases within the country. Separately, one U.S. citizen died in China.

Americans Cheryl and Paul Molesky, a couple from Syracuse, New York, opted to trade one coronavirus quarantine for another, leaving the cruise ship to fly back to the U.S. Cheryl Molesky said the rising number of patients on the ship factored into the decision.

“We are glad to be going home,” Cheryl Molesky earlier told NHK TV in Japan. “It’s just a little bit disappointing that we’ll have to go through quarantine again, and we will probably not be as comfortable as the Diamond Princess, possibly.”

She sent The Associated Press a video of her and her husband boarding the plane with other Americans.

“Well, we’re exhausted, but we’re on the plane and that’s a good feeling. Pretty miserable wearing these masks though, and everybody had to go to the bathroom on the bus,” she said.

Some American passengers said they would pass up the opportunity to fly to the United States because of the additional quarantine. There also was worry about being on a long flight with other passengers who may be infected or in an incubation period.

One of the Americans, Matthew Smith, said in a tweet Sunday that he saw a passenger with no face mask talking at close quarters with another passenger. He said he and his wife scurried away.

“If there are secondary infections on board, this is why,” he said. “And you wanted me to get on a bus with her?”

He said the American health officials who visited their room was apparently surprised that the couple had decided to stay, and wished them luck.

“Thanks, but we’re fine,” Smith said he told them.

Daniel Lee Martin, Country Singer Accused of Child Sex Abuse, Dies at 54

Daniel Lee Martin, country singer and host of “Brotherhood Outdoors,” was found dead in his Pasco County, Florida, home Friday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 54.

Pasco deputies discovered his body when they arrived at Martin’s home to serve him with multiple warrants for his arrest that included three counts of sexual exploitation on a minor, three counts of aggravated sexual battery, two counts of committing an aggravated sexual battery and one count of solicitation of a minor to commit rape of a child.

Martin was scheduled for a court hearing Friday morning but when he failed to appear, authorities were sent to his home to pick him up.

“The PSO SWAT team was called in to assist, as Martin previously made threats of harm against himself and others,” a Sheriff’s statement reads. “When deputies made entry to the residence, they discovered Martin deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Martin was indicted in 2018 of child sex crimes in Williamson County, Tennessee, having been accused of acts against three victims under the age of 13 between May 2014 and January 2018. He was arrested again last month in Florida, accused of exposing himself to a young girl, showing her pornography and performing a lewd act in her presence, according to court documents.

Martin was a former baseball player and pro golfer who left a successful career as an advertising executive in 1997 to pursue his dream of becoming a country music recording artist, according to AllMusic.com. At various times he opened for Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels and Vince Gill.

He released albums “All That I Am” in 2003 and “On My Way to You” in 2007, and also co-hosted a hunting show “Brotherhood Outdoors” on The Sportsman Channel.

Costa Rican police find six tonnes of cocaine in biggest ever haul

Police in Costa Rica have found almost 6 tonnes of cocaine in a shipping container, leading to the country’s biggest ever drug seizure.

The drugs, which weighed 5,800kg, were discovered on Friday evening in Limón in a container of flowers due to be sent to Rotterdam, Holland, according to the Costan Rican national newspaper La Nación.

In a press conference on Saturday afternoon, interior minister Michael Soto Rojas confirmed it was the largest ever drug seizure in Costa Rica.

The interior minister estimated that the haul has a European market value of €126m (£104.6m).

More than 5,000 packets of cocaine were found inside 202 suitcases.

A 46-year-old Costa Rican man with no previous criminal convictions has been arrested in connection to the drug haul.

According to the minister, there was a drugs seizure of almost three tonnes in Costa Rica a decade ago.

VICTORIA - Eight bald eagles are fighting for their lives on Vancouver Island after feasting on an animal carcass that was loaded with sedative drugs.

The first poisoned bird was brought to the Island Animal Hospital by members of the Raptor Rescue Society in Duncan, B.C. on Sunday.

"They actually thought it had died because it was so non-responsive," says Ken Langelier, a veterinarian at the Nanaimo hospital who is renowned for his work with eagles.

"Someone said, 'Don't bother with this one, it's already dead.' But I checked it closely and there still was a heartbeat. Immediately I could tell that it was heavily sedated by the way its third eyelid would move and its slow breathing and heart rate, and low body temperature."

Langelier noticed the bird had a very full stomach and a full crop – a muscular pouch in the throat that's used to store food.

The discovery indicated likely barbiturate poisoning, Langelier says.

"We managed to empty the crop contents out, start intravenous fluids and give activated charcoal [to empty the stomach] and warm the bird up," he says. "It started to respond and do quite a bit better when I got a call that there were another seven eagles coming in."

The eight ill eagles showed clear signs of having gorged themselves on a dead pig, Langelier says.

"What we're suspecting is somebody had the animal euthanized and rather than bury it deeply or contact the landfill ahead of time, they just disposed of it and of course the eagles are looking for any opportunity to feed on any meat, and started ingesting it and falling from the sky."

The longtime vet and his team spent all day Sunday treating the poisoned birds, while members of the Raptor Rescue Society scoured the area for more birds that may have eaten the poisoned meat and flown away.

"The only ones they found, fortunately, were at the landfill so I think they just ate so much they just dropped on the spot."

Langelier says the remains of the pig carcass have not been found. Volunteers with the rescue society were headed back to the landfill Monday to search for more avian victims and Langelier was headed back to the animal hospital to check on the eagles' progress.

"It's exhausting treating them," he says. "They're just doing what they want to do, which is scavenge."

The veterinarian says barbiturate poisoning is not uncommon among Vancouver Island's eagle population.

He estimates he's treated 50 such birds over the span of his career, including a dozen eagles that fell ill after eating a euthanized farm animal last January, and nearly 30 eagles that gorged themselves on a dead cow in 1988.

"It's important that people realize when a veterinarian euthanizes an animal, it has to be considered as toxic waste," Langelier says.

"The landfill will still take them, but they're buried very deeply so that a bird can't get at them and they do it right away. Unfortunately, they weren’t aware of anything here and so it's not the landfill's fault at all – it's whoever did the dumping."

Charges were eventually laid in the case of the 12 eagles poisoned last year. Seven of those birds died.

Jerusalem chief rabbi locked out of his office in internal quarrel

Religious services minister reprimands Jerusalem Local Religious Council chair over incident

Jerusalem's Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Aryeh Stern was locked out of his office by the head of the Jerusalem Local Religious Council Yehoshua Yishai on Monday due to internal disputes between the two figures.

Yishai replaced the lock to Stern’s office on Sunday night, but did not tell him he had done so.

Stern went to his office Monday morning but found that he was locked out, and as of Monday afternoon had still not received the new key.

Yishai has frequently opposed Stern’s activities as chief rabbi, and Stern’s office is now accusing him of acting maliciously towards the Jerusalem chief rabbi by having switched the locks on his office.

“This is not behavior that should be done in relation to rabbis, and we hope he will come to his senses and behave,” said Stern’s spokesman of Yishai.

Yishai is yet to respond to a request for comment.

Stern recently reached the age of 75, which is the age of retirement for rabbis in state-paid positions. However, he is seeking an extension to his tenure until the formation of a new government when a new chief rabbi can be appointed.

However, the extension has been held up, and Religious Services Minister Yitzhak Vaknin of Shas has still not signed off on approving it.

Vaknin did, however, claim that he had reprimanded Yishai over the incident and protested “the honor of Rabbi Stern.”

The minister also called the chief rabbi himself, and said that while the Justice Ministry is deliberating the change in ministry regulations to extend Stern’s tenure, “no one will harm the rabbi.”

Vaknin’s spokesman did not respond to a request for comment on whether Yishai will face disciplinary procedures or not.

Two months ago, it appeared that Stern’s extension would be granted quickly, with the deputy attorney-general and the legal adviser to the Religious Services Ministry writing that the request was reasonable and justifiable.

It appeared that Vaknin was preparing to sign off on the extension, but he subsequently said that he does not want the change in regulations to pertain specifically to Stern but to other rabbis in the same situation as well.

Karmiel's Chief Rabbi Eliyahu Malka, 80, is in a similar situation to Stern, and it seems that Vaknin will not approve the extension for Stern unless an extension for Malka is approved by the Attorney-General’s Office and the Justice Ministry, which appears unlikely.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-SC, is requesting interviews with FBI and DOJ officials linked to the handling of the July 31, 2016 Crossfire Hurricane probe, according to a letter the Chairman sent to Attorney General William Barr Friday.

In the letter, Graham also requests clarity on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant and its renewals used to spy on former Trump campaign volunteer Carter Page. Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s December, 2019 report found seventeen significant inaccuracies or omissions in those secret federal surveillance applications.

Page told The Sara Carter Show last month that he’s “encouraged and appreciative” for Inspector General Michael Horowitz, but warned that the findings were just “the tip of the iceberg.”

Several federal prosecutors have been tapped to investigate high-profile Russia, Ukraine and Clinton-related matters under the Trump administration.

Here is a list of the internal Justice Department probes underway:

The case of former national security adviser Michael Flynn

Attorney General Bill Barr appointed the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri Jeff Jensen to review the case of former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Justice Department officials told Fox News that Jensen will work hand-in-hand with Brandon Van Grack — the lead prosecutor on the Flynn case — during his review.

Flynn’s case has gone through years of twists and turns, with sentencing postponed repeatedly over the last two years. Flynn’s supporters have insisted he is innocent but was forced to plead guilty when his son was threatened with prosecution and he exhausted his financial resources.

As part of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, Flynn pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI about his communications with former Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Barr’s move to tap Jensen comes after Flynn and his attorney last month moved to withdraw his guilty plea, citing “the government’s bad faith, vindictiveness, and breach of the plea agreement.”

Ukraine information

Barr last week confirmed that the Justice Department is reviewing information about Ukraine coming from President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and others. Barr has tapped U.S. Attorney from the Western District of Pennsylvania Scott Brady to handle that Ukraine information.

That review comes after the president was acquitted on charges — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress — stemming from the Ukraine controversy.

Giuliani, for months, has focused on the circumstances surrounding Hunter Biden’s past board position with Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma Holdings and the role of his father, former Vice President Joe Biden, in ousting a prosecutor who had been looking into the firm’s founder.

The impeachment of Trump focused largely on his efforts to press Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate that issue. The president’s request came after millions in U.S. military aid to Ukraine had been frozen, which Democrats argued showed a “quid pro quo” arrangement. Trump denied it.

CBS News first reported last week that the review, which has been going on for several weeks, will go beyond the Biden-Ukraine connection.

Durham probe into origins of Russia investigation

Last year, Barr appointed U.S. Attorney from Connecticut John Durham to review the events leading up to the 2016 presidential election and through Trump’s January 20, 2017 inauguration. But, as Fox News first reported, Durham has since expanded his investigation to cover a post-election timeline spanning the spring of 2017 — when Mueller was appointed as special counsel.

Durham investigated CIA officials and other officials throughout the intelligence community. Former CIA Director John Brennan has said that Durham plans to interview him and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. Those interviews have yet to take place, a source familiar with the investigation told Fox News last week.

Clinton Foundation, Uranium One

In November 2017, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions directed U.S. Attorney for Utah John Huber and other senior prosecutors to evaluate “certain issues” involving the sale of Uranium One and alleged unlawful dealings related to the Clinton Foundation.

The status of the Huber probe, and whether he is still investigating, is unclear.

FISA warrant, Clinton server document release

In April 2018, the Justice Department appointed U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois John Lausch to oversee the gathering of documents in response to a subpoena issued by the House Judiciary Committee in an effort to obtain materials related to the FBI’s probe into Hillary Clinton’s private email server and potential Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) abuses.

The move came after the president blasted the Justice Department and the FBI for “slow walking” turning over requested documents to Congress.

There is a guy in Tucson who is in Jail for threatening Adam Schiff over the telephone. His name is Jan Peter Meister. Jan Peter Meister was arrested in the 1980's in Rockville MD for raping two girls that were 13 and 14 years old. It seems like an odd coincidence that this man is from the same place that Schiff is from. The address given in his sex offender flyer is a vacant lot in Tucson. I think there might be more to this story. The trial date is scheduled for March the 9th.

Over and over and over again, at about a 100 percent rate, we have seen woke blockbusters crash and burn at the box office, or at least under-perform. The anti-male Birds of Prey is just the latest victim of audiences rejecting agendas and lectures disguised as entertainment.

Incredibly, this list also includes the Star Wars saga, which most of us believed was bulletproof. I’m not arguing the latest Star Wars trilogy was a flop. But it did perform so far below expectations, especially The Rise of Skywalker, which should have out-performed pretty much every other Star Wars movie, that as a movie franchise, Star Wars is dead.

Can Marvel break the Woke Curse?

Can Marvel get away with using this guy-on-guy action as the tip of its promotional spear and not take a hit at the box office?

Well, if anyone can, it’s Marvel, a franchise with an unprecedented 100 percent hit-rate at the box office; something unheard of when you’re talking about 20-plus titles released over only a dozen or so years.

A few things, though, should concern Marvel…

Star Wars was once considered as bulletproof as Marvel.

Marvel is no longer Marvel. What I mean is that the Iron Man/Captain America era is over. Come on, who the hell are the Eternals?

Finally, who wants to see this? Who is the audience for this? Do parents want to expose their children to something that will result in a premature conversation about human sexuality?

For 99 percent of kids, watching a man and woman smooch is normal. They think nothing of it. But when kids see two hairy guys get it on, all of a sudden the topic of human sexuality is on the table, a conversation your children might not be ready for. After all, good parents seek to protect their child’s innocence for as long as possible.

I’m certainly not the audience — I can tell you that. I’m not going to spend 150 minutes and ten bucks to sit there and wait to be uncomfortable. Who wants to sit around all tensed up “waiting for it?”

Yeah, yeah, I know we’re not supposed to express those kinds of thoughts out loud today; we’re supposed to remain quiet, or worse, pretend that as a red-blooded heterosexuals we are not made uncomfortable when two hairy guys become romantically intimate. Sorry, but the fascist thought police cannot change the fact that we are indeed made uncomfortable. And…

That’s not homophobia… That’s human nature. What’s more, it is also my own – if you will — sexual preference, and why am I not allowed to express my own personal sexual preferences, which includes a desire to avoid watching two fellas neck?

And I tried. I swear I sat through all those 90’s indie movies… But this stuff has never failed to make me uncomfortable, and now I’m done trying because life is just too short.

Listen, as I have said before, it is totally appropriate for Hollywood to make movies for gay audiences. Hollywood should make movies for everyone, and if they want to make a $250 million superhero blockbuster for gay people… Fine.

I’m just not going to go see it.

The chan boards from which Qanon emerged have a long history of “raiding” behavior, in which users launch coordinated attacks on other online communities and platforms. In that context, it's not surprising that Qanon is active on social media ahead of the 2020 elections. What’s surprising is the level of organization that the Endchan and 8kun Qanon sub-communities are demonstrating.

Last fall, Qanon conspiracists targeted the Louisiana and Kentucky gubernatorial elections by flooding key hashtags such as #vote and #VoteonNov5 with tweets and memes supporting the Republican candidates and smearing their opponents. Users following those hashtags could have been exposed to a torrent of pro-Republican, anti-Democrat content. Qanon adherents also sought to hijack pro-Democrat hashtags such as #VoteBlue and #JohnBelEdwards (the Democratic candidate in Louisiana) and troll Democrat accounts by replying to their tweets with comments and memes attacking the candidate.

On November 16, the day of Louisiana’s runoff election, an Endchan user called on fellow posters to “raid” a Twitter thread by the Democratic Governors' Association in support of John Bel Edwards. Another user, calling out to “anons,” (how users on the chan boards often refer to one another) posted memes criticizing Bel Edwards, claiming he "gives illegals your medical" and "allowed highest murder rate." (FBI statistics show Louisiana’s murder rate rose in 2017 and fell in 2018 while Bel Edwards was governor). The meme was then posted on the Democratic Governors' Association's thread.

Memes are an important Qanon tactic, in part because, as images, they often evade efforts to moderate content. "Memes go around his censorship algorithms," a poster on the Qanon board on Endchan wrote in October. Qanon supporters stockpile hundreds of memes that followers can tap.

The members of the so-called Squad, four progressive Democratic congressmembers who are people of color, are particular targets. They are the subject of hundreds of memes stored on image-sharing accounts linked to the Qanon research boards. These memes often contain implicitly or overtly racist and sexist attacks, including monikers like “jihad squad” and “suicide squad.”

There are also racial elements to Qanon’s efforts to shift the ground on an important issue for 2020: voter identification.

Voter identification measures are controversial, because of concerns that they can unfairly discriminate against minority voters. The #voterid hashtag has been consistently targeted by Qanon over a period of months, including stockpiling hundreds of memes relating to voter ID and voter fraud in shared accounts on image file-sharing sites.

Qanon followers employ multiple strategies to support voter ID laws, from accusing opponents of voter ID laws of racism, to leaning into Trump's own oft-repeated conspiracy theory that voter fraud favored the Democrats in 2016, to the confusing suggestion that a lack of voter ID laws helped Russian interference in the 2016 election. This willingness to shift narratives, testing out different means to the same end, echoes the way in which Russia’s Internet Research Agency actively played on both sides of social media debates in 2016 in an effort to sow division.

In July 2019, Qanon's efforts on the #voterid hashtag got the biggest boost imaginable: Trump tagged the Qanon account @Voteridplease in a tweet calling for voter identification measures. His tweet was shared more than 140,000 times.

Julian Feeld, co-host of the Qanon Anonymous podcast, says Qanon is “a colorful expression of a broader and more worrying global trend towards ‘information warfare’ in the service of those seeking to consolidate capital and power.” He says the group is “a harbinger of what’s next for the American political discourse."

By promoting conspiracies and fomenting division, Zuckerman, of the MIT Media Lab, says Qanon and similar movements threaten Americans’ sense of shared truth. “The danger of Qanon is not that they try to blow up a building,” he says. “It's that they and others are blowing up our shared reality."

News of a Department of Justice “Slush Fund” has been making headlines recently.

Unfortunately, this is not new information – the activity goes back to 2012 and can be traced to The Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities Working Group (Working Group), created in 2012 by none other than Obama’s first Attorney General, Eric Holder. Let’s just say that I view Mr. Holder as “ethically-challenged”.

The Working Group was created within the Justice Department in 2012 as a means of prosecution and punishment for those perceived to be responsible for the financial crisis of 2008. At its formation Mr. Holder made the following statement:

“Over the past three years, we have been aggressively investigating the causes of the financial crisis. And we have learned that much of the conduct that led to the crisis was unethical, and, in many instances, extremely reckless. We also have learned that behavior that is unethical or reckless may not necessarily be criminal. When we find evidence of criminal wrongdoing, we bring criminal prosecutions. When we don’t, we endeavor to use other tools available to us.”

These “other tools” are usually civil sanctions and charges that generally result in large fines being paid by firms, often without a statement of true wrongdoing.

With the full weight of the Department of Justice behind it, the Working Group reached multi-billion settlements with virtually every major bank in America. In total, $110 billion was collected in fines. So where did all this money go? According to a Wall Street Journal report the money breaks down as follows:

$49 billion went to the Department of Treasury – some directly, but most funneled to Treasury through settlements with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Spending of proceeds has not been specified.

$45 billion was for Consumer Relief – a vaguely defined category that includes borrowers and “housing-related community groups“. Breakdowns are not fully known.

$10 billion went to “other recipients” – most appear to be federal in nature.

$5.3 billion went to states to spend as they wanted.

$450 million went to the Department of Justice. Spending of proceeds has not been specified.

The lack of transparency is disturbing. What follows is alarming.

Beijing (AP) — For decades, the Uighur imam was a bedrock of his farming community in China’s far west. On Fridays, he preached Islam as a religion of peace. On Sundays, he treated the sick with free herbal medicine. In the winter, he bought coal for the poor.

But as a Chinese government mass detention campaign engulfed Memtimin Emer’s native Xinjiang region three years ago, the elderly imam was swept up and locked away, along with all three of his sons living in China.

Now, a newly revealed database exposes in extraordinary detail the main reasons for the detentions of Emer, his three sons, and hundreds of others in Karakax County: their religion and their family ties.

The database obtained by The Associated Press profiles the internment of 311 individuals with relatives abroad and lists information on more than 2,000 of their relatives, neighbors and friends. Each entry includes the detainee’s name, address, national identity number, detention date and location, along with a detailed dossier on their family, religious and neighborhood background, the reason for detention, and a decision on whether or not to release them. Issued within the past year, the documents do not indicate which government department compiled them or for whom.

Taken as a whole, the information offers the fullest and most personal view yet into how Chinese officials decided who to put into and let out of detention camps, as part of a massive crackdown that has locked away more than a million ethnic minorities, most of them Muslims.

The database emphasizes that the Chinese government focused on religion as a reason for detention — not just political extremism, as authorities claim, but ordinary activities such as praying, attending a mosque, or even growing a long beard. It also shows the role of family: People with detained relatives are far more likely to end up in a camp themselves, uprooting and criminalizing entire families like Emer’s in the process.

Trump Raises Stakes In Fight With Boris Johnson, Says Using Huawei Jeopardizes US Intelligence

President Donald Trump issued a warning Sunday to countries that use Chinese tech company firm, Huawei.

Any country partnering with Huawei risk jeopardizing U.S.’ ability to share intelligence, the president said through one of his chief diplomats, U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell. Trump’s comment comes after Britain permitted Huawei limited access in January to the country’s network.

Trump “just called me from AF1 and instructed me to make clear that any nation who chooses to use an untrustworthy 5G vendor will jeopardize our ability to share Intelligence and information at the highest level,” Grenell told his Twitter followers Sunday evening.

Britain is reportedly allowing the company to supply and build 5G network infrastructure but will deny the massive company access to some of Britain’s government sites. Britain officials had been under intense pressure from the Trump administration to block Huawei.

Huawei considers the move a win, even though Britain also limited its market share to 35%.

Meanwhile, American officials are stepping up their anti-Huawei campaign. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, for instance, told his Twitter followers in January that Britain had a “momentous decision ahead on 5G.”

Former Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan was among a handful of people who panned Britain’s move. “It’s a recipe for disaster,” he said in a press statement addressing the decision.

China has reportedly spent $24 billion more on wireless communications infrastructure since 2015 than the U.S.

The country also built more 5G towers in a three-month span in 2017 than the U.S. did in three years. There are also concerns that Huawei’s and ZTE’s close ties to China leave the U.S. open to cyberattacks.

NYC Police Officer Commits Suicide in His Home

The detective, who had served in the local police for years, was recently placed on modified-duty and had his weapons take away from him, according to NYPD sources.

A New York City Police Department officer has committed suicide at his mother's home in Queens, the New York Post reported on Monday.

According to local law enforcement sources, the officer hanged himself at the home in Middle Village.

Upon the family's request, the detective's identity has been withhold.

The detective did not leave any suicide note behind and the motives behind his death so far remain unknown. Commenting on his death, a source said, "nobody seems to know why".

Virginia lawmakers reject assault weapon ban

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s push to ban the sale of assault weapons failed on Monday after some of his fellow Democrats balked at the proposal.

Senators voted to shelve the bill for the year and ask the state crime commission to study the issue, an outcome that drew cheers from a committee room packed with gun advocates.

Four moderate Democrats joined Republicans in Monday’s committee vote, rejecting legislation that would have prohibited the sale of certain semiautomatic firearms, including popular AR-15 style rifles, and banned the possession of magazines that hold more than 12 rounds.

The bill was a top priority for Northam, who has campaigned heavily for a broad package of gun-control measures. The governor’s spokeswoman, Alena Yarmosky, said he’s disappointed with the result but determined to continue to press for the measure.

“We will be back next year,” she said.

David Majure, a gun-rights supporter who attended the committee hearing, said he’s glad about Monday’s results but not convinced the bill is dead for the year.

“I’m happy about it, but I don’t trust them,” he said.

Virginia is the current epicenter of the country’s heated debate over guns, as a new Democratic majority seeks to enact strict new limits.

Democrats ran heavily on gun control during last year’s legislative elections when they flipped control of the General Assembly for the first time in more than two decades.

But gun owners, especially in rural communities, have pushed back hard. Last month, tens of thousands of guns-rights activists from around the country flooded the Capitol and surrounding area in protest, some donning tactical gear and carrying military-style rifles. And more than 100 counties, cities and towns have declared themselves Second Amendment sanctuaries, vowing to oppose any new “unconstitutional restrictions” on guns.

The proposed assault weapon ban has received the most opposition. Gun owners have accused the governor and others of wanting to confiscate commonly owned guns and accessories from law-abiding gun owners. Northam and his allies have said repeatedly they do not want to confiscate guns, but argued that banning new sales of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines would help prevent mass murders.

“This bill will save lives,” said Democratic Del. Mark Levine, who sponsored the legislation.

Earlier proposals to ban possession of AR-15-style rifles or to require owners to register them with state police have been scrapped. The governor had hoped a watered-down version would win over enough Democratic moderates for passage.

But moderate Democrats in the state Senate have said for weeks they are uncomfortable passing legislation that would affect so many current gun owners.

An estimated 8 million AR-style guns have been sold since they were introduced to the public in the 1960s. The weapons are known as easy to use, easy to clean and easy to modify with a variety of scopes, stocks and rails.

Lawmakers voted to table the bill Monday with little debate, while noting that there was confusion over what types of guns would constitute an assault weapon.

“There are obviously a lot of questions about definitions in this bill. Definitions do matter,” said Democratic Sen. Creigh Deeds.

The Senate has now rejected three of the governor’s eight gun-control measures. Moderate Democrats have already voted with Republicans to kill a bill that would make it a felony to “recklessly leave a loaded, unsecured firearm” in a way that endangers a minor, and a bill that would require gun owners to report the loss or theft of a gun to police.

Lawmakers in both the House and Senate have already advanced several other gun-control measures and should finalize passage in the coming days. Those bills include limiting handgun purchases to once a month; universal background checks on gun purchases; allowing localities to ban guns in public buildings, parks and other areas; and a red flag bill that would allow authorities to temporarily take guns away from anyone deemed to be dangerous to themselves or others.

I read an article similar to this about 6 years ago and posted on FB at that time, it’s outrageous that Tyson and other American companies were required (or chose), to ship the live chickens to China so chineses could process them, and then return to the US, a process that could take 6-10 weeks enroute, is such a waste, and there’s no longer actually fresh chicken in our grocery stores anymore. CHICAGO: Tyson Foods Inc received approval from US and Chinese authorities to export American poultry to China from all 36 of its US processing plants and expects to begin taking orders early next year, a chief supply chain officer for the company said.

US chicken companies are eager to resume sales in China after Beijing last month lifted a nearly five-year ban on imports as Chinese consumers seek pork alternatives. A deadly hog disease has killed millions of pigs and raised meat prices in the pork-loving country.

Increased Chinese purchases of products like chicken feet, wing tips and legs would help increase US agricultural exports to China as the two countries negotiate a trade deal.

"There's an extreme amount of interest across all those parts from multiple buyers in China," Bernie Adcock, Tyson Foods' chief supply chain officer for poultry, said in an interview on Friday.

The US Trade Representative last month projected more than US$1 billion in annual poultry shipments to China.

Beijing banned US poultry and eggs in January 2015 over a US outbreak of avian flu, closing a market that bought US$500 million worth of American poultry products in 2013, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Researchers from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico have pre-published a new study in the journal medRxiv (associated with the British Medical Journal) that says the actual basic reproductive number, or R0, for novel coronavirus is somewhere between 4.7 and 6.6, as opposed to the 2.2 to 2.7 range being claimed by government health authorities.

While the study has not yet been peer-reviewed as of this writing, its abstract explains that “extensive individual case reports” on this constantly evolving global outbreak reveal that the R0 estimates put forth by those “in charge” are essentially flawed.

After evaluating these case reports and assessing them alongside estimated key epidemiology parameters, including the virus’ incubation period – we now know the incubation period to be closer to a month as opposed to just two weeks – the team determined that each coronavirus-infected person can potentially infect nearly seven others with the disease.

“Integrating these estimates and high-resolution real-time human travel and infection data with mathematical models, we estimated that the number of infected individuals during early epidemic double every 2.4 days, and the R0 value is likely to be between 4.7 and 6.6,” the paper explains.

The paper in question goes on to warn that the measures currently being implemented to address novel coronavirus, especially outside of the United States, aren’t enough to contain it. Instead, it argues, much more needs to be done to prevent a potential global pandemic situation where the virus becomes completely out of control.

“We further show that quarantine and contact tracing of symptomatic individuals alone may not be effective and early, strong control measures are needed to stop transmission of the virus,” it eerily states.

One can only surmise that this is implying medical martial law, which we’re already seeing take place throughout communist China as entire cities with millions of people living in them are brought under mandatory lockdown and quarantine.

If things continue on as they are and the virus isn’t contained, we’ll likely see similar developments here in the U.S., sorry to say. That’s because one way or another, novel coronavirus is going to impact our country, whether by mass infection or mass implosion of the economy, if not both.

Right this moment, countless Chinese factories that produce goods for the U.S. and other markets are sitting empty and closed due to quarantines and lockdowns. The Chinese people who normally work at them are being told they have to stay home for public safety, which means nothing is being manufactured.

What this means is that it’s only a matter of time before stores here in America are empty, especially those that sell products that are mostly made in China. Even if the number of coronavirus cases here on our soil never breaches 100, many of the Chinese products upon which most of us rely could still disappear virtually overnight if supplies eventually run dry.

This is a major consequence of globalism, of course, as the entire “machine” stands to collapse if even just one crucial component breaks down. In this case, that component is Chinese manufacturing, which accounts for most of the manufacturing that we currently rely on to live in the modern age.

Fascinating microscope images reveal the coronavirus's 'crown' shape as it attacks the cells of one of the 15 patients infected in the US

US scientists have released the first images of the new coronavirus that's spread to more than 70,000 people worldwide and killed more than 1,700.

Scientists at the National Institute of Health (NIH) collected the sample from an infected American, though it's unclear which one.

They captured images of the virus emerging from various cell types, and had their teams of medical visual artists colorize the to better delineate the virus from the healthy cells.

Apple warns coronavirus will hurt iPhone supply and its quarterly revenue

Supply is a problem, as factories slowly reopen in China, and demand is down, too, with stores there still mostly closed. The coronavirus is taking a bigger toll on Apple's operations than it thought, and iPhone buyers around the world could see a shortage.

The electronics giant on Monday warned that it likely will miss the quarterly revenue guidance it gave last month. It cited two reasons for the update: the coronavirus is hurting both demand from Chinese customers and production capabilities inside the country. China is one of Apple's biggest markets and the primary location where its devices like the iPhone are assembled. Because factories are coming online later, there will be iPhone shortages around the globe, Apple said.

"Work is starting to resume around the country, but we are experiencing a slower return to normal conditions than we had anticipated," Apple said in a statement. "As a result, we do not expect to meet the revenue guidance we provided for the March quarter." The company said guidance it issued at the end of January was based on information it had at the time, coupled with its estimates for when the pace of work would return to normal after the extended Chinese New Year holiday. At that time, Apple had factored the possible supplier and retail traffic impact into its revenue guidance for the March quarter, which - at $63 billion to $67 billion - was a bigger range than what it normally provides. That range was higher than the $62.45 billion expected by analysts.

While Apple sells a lot of its gadgets in China, it's also tied to the country in another key way. Apple designs its phones in the US, but the devices - like many other electronics - are assembled in China. Many of its employees travel frequently between the region and Apple's Cupertino, California, headquarters, and the slowdown in production in China is causing a shortage of iPhones and other Apple devices across the globe.

"Worldwide iPhone supply will be temporarily constrained," Apple said Monday. "While our iPhone manufacturing partner sites are located outside the Hubei province - and while all of these facilities have reopened - they are ramping up more slowly than we had anticipated."

U.S. mulls cutting Huawei off from global chip suppliers, with TSMC in crosshairs

The Trump administration is considering changing U.S. regulations to allow it to block shipments of chips to Huawei Technologies from companies such as Taiwan’s TSMC the world’s largest contract chipmaker, two sources familiar with the matter said. New restrictions on commerce with China’s Huawei are among several options to be considered at high-level U.S. meetings this week and next. The chip proposal has been drafted but its approval is far from certain, one of the sources said.

The measure would be a blow to the world’s no. 2 smartphone maker as well as to TSMC, a major producer of chips for Huawei’s HiSilicon unit and mobile phone rivals Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O). “What they’re trying to do is make sure that no chips go to Huawei that they can possibly control,” the second source said. Huawei is at the heart of a battle for global technological dominance between the United States and China. The United States is trying to convince allies to exclude its gear from next generation 5G networks on grounds its equipment could be used by China for spying. Huawei has repeatedly denied the claim. To target global chip sales to Huawei, U.S. authorities would alter the Foreign Direct Product Rule, which subjects some foreign-made goods based on U.S. technology or software to U.S. regulations. Under the draft proposal, the U.S. government would force foreign companies that use U.S. chipmaking equipment to seek a U.S. license before supplying Huawei - a major expansion of export control authority that could anger U.S. allies worldwide.

The Commerce Department declined to comment on the proposal. But a Commerce spokesman said recent U.S. charges against Huawei, including conspiring to steal trade secrets, “reaffirm the need for caution in considering license applications. The U.S. continues to have major concerns about Huawei.” Huawei and TSMC did not respond to requests for comment.

The United States placed Huawei on a blacklist in May last year, citing national security concerns. That forced some U.S. and foreign companies to seek special licenses from the Commerce Department to sell to it, but China hawks in the U.S. government have been frustrated by the vast number of supply chains beyond their reach. Others in the Trump administration fear antagonizing Beijing, which just signed a trade deal with Washington. They also worry the restrictions will drive innovation offshore and benefit foreign rivals.

Most chip manufacturers rely on equipment produced by U.S. companies like KLA (KLAC.O), Lam Research (LRCX.O) and Applied Materials (AMAT.O), according to a report last year from China’s Everbright Securities. “There is no production line in China that uses only equipment made in China, so it is very difficult to make any chipsets without U.S. equipment,” Everbright wrote.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday after meeting U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last week that he had felt a more constructive approach from Washington when it came to the U.S.-Russia strategic dialogue.

The two top diplomats met on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Friday in an encounter that neither side has so far spoken about in detail.

“I felt certain small moves toward a more constructive approach by our American partners,” Lavrov said on his ministry’s website on Monday.

Lavrov said the two men had spoken about issues related to strategic dialogue between Russia and the United States and about arms control.

The last remaining major arms control treaty between Moscow and Washington, the New START accord, expires next year. Russia has said it is ready to extend it, but U.S. officials have called it flawed and outdated.

The treaty is the last major nuclear arms control treaty between the world’s two biggest nuclear powers and limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads they can deploy.

Why the US is losing its war against Huawei

Humiliated by the United Kingdom’s refusal to exclude Huawei from its 5G broadband network, the Trump Administration has doubled down on its attempts to stop China, with poor prospects for success.

The American response includes prosecution of Huawei under the Racketeer-Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) statute, drafted to combat organized crime. It also includes proposed regulations that would stop the sale of any US components to Huawei and China’s second-rank telecommunications firm ZTE if 10% of their production comes from American technology.

Also proposed is a ban on sales of jet engines for civilian passenger aircraft that General Electric and France’s Safran have been selling to China since 2014 – an economic warfare measure that has no national security justification.

Never in the course of American events have so many said too much to so little effect.

US National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien, meanwhile, told the Wall Street Journal on February 12 that the US had uncovered a secret backdoor in Huawei equipment that enabled the Chinese firm to spy on Western communications. Huawei rejected the charge, demanding that the United States make the data public.

The US charge elicited ridicule overseas. Orange CEO Stephane Richard said on February 14: “I’d be interested to see the evidence. It reminds me of the weapons of mass destruction during the Iraq war.” Germany’s Der Spiegel headlined its report: “A backdoor that only the US can see.”

At the weekend’s annual security conference in Munich, American officials including Defense Secretary Mike Esper and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned European countries to shun Huawei. “Reliance on Chinese 5G vendors, for example, could render our partners’ critical systems vulnerable to disruption, manipulation and espionage,” Esper said. “It could also jeopardize our communication and intelligence sharing capabilities, and by extension, our alliances.”

But the US news outlet Politico titled its report, “Europe turns deaf ear to US warnings on Chinese 5G.”

After emerging as the top vote-getter in the New Hampshire Democratic presidential primary, US Senator Bernie Sanders has confirmed his status as the front-runner in the contest for the Democratic party nomination. Bernie Sanders, the US senator from Vermont and Democratic candidate for the 2020 presidential nomination, has attempted to fully embrace his Jewish background in a recent campaign video, which highlights his bid to become “the first Jewish president” in the history of the US.

CIA scientist who was privy to the agency's darkest Cold War secrets was 'murdered by agents when he got cold feet', says family in new book

The family of a CIA scientist who was privy to some of the agency's darkest secrets during the Cold War believes he did not kill himself, as they have been told for decades, and was instead murdered because he posed a risk to them.

Frank Olson died in the early hours of the morning on Nov. 28, 1953 outside The Statler Hotel in New York City, after having apparently fallen from his room on the 13th floor.

His family were not allowed to see his body, instead being told he had suffered significant facial injuries in the fall, and that he had killed himself by jumping.

But the man's nephew Paul Vidich is now claiming in his new book, The Coldest Warrior, that Olson was in fact killed by the CIA.

He says that after the family had Olson's body exhumed, they were told that he died as the result of blunt force trauma in the hotel room and that he was thrown to the street below.

He had LSD in his system which Vidich thinks he was given at a clandestine, off-site meeting earlier in the day to test his trustworthiness.

At the time, he says his uncle had become privy to some of the agency's closely guarded secrets about strategies and techniques the US used in The Cold War.

Among them were interrogation techniques and the facts that the CIA had cooperated with Nazis and some Japanese war criminals following World War 2.

Republicans urging GOP voters to vote for Sanders in South Carolina primary: report

State Republican leaders in South Carolina are urging GOP voters to vote for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in the state's Feb. 29 Democratic primary.

The plan — orchestrated by Greenville GOP chairman Nate Leupp and several other prominent Republican Party leaders — revolves around GOP leadership's belief that Sanders poses the least amount of challenge to President Trump in November's general election and its goal of getting the Palmetto State's Democratic lawmakers to agree to close the state's primaries.

“Bernie Sanders is the most socialistic, liberal candidate running in the Democratic presidential preference primary,” Leupp told The Post and Courier. “So we feel we can make a strong point that our Democratic state legislators need to help work to close our primaries so it protects them as well as the Republican brand.”

South Carolina has open primaries, meaning voters don't have to be associated with a political party to cast a ballot.

According to the paper, Leupp and company are set to unveil their plan on Thursday at a press conference at the GOP's headquarters in Greenville.

In the latest Post and Courier poll, Sanders only trailed former Vice President Joe Biden, who has long been the favorite in the state, by 5 percentage points.

Leupp said that he believes that the state's large Republican voter base could make the difference in the primary. To his point, in 2016 roughly 740,000 people voted in the state's GOP presidential primary, while only 370,000 voted in the Democratic version.

“I think we can easily affect the outcome,” Leupp told the paper. “This is going to catch on like wildfire.”

Mr. Mooney of West Virginia introduced the following bill; which was

A BILL

To define the dollar as a fixed weight of gold.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the

United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. FINDINGS.

Congress finds the following:

(1) The United States dollar has lost 30 percent of its

purchasing power since 2000, and 96 percent of its purchasing

power since the end of the gold standard in 1913.

(2) Under the Federal Reserve's 2 percent inflation

objective, the dollar loses half of its purchasing power every

generation, or 35 years.

(3) American families need long-term price stability to

meet their household spending needs, save money, and plan for

retirement.

(4) The Federal Reserve policy of long-term inflation has

made American manufacturing uncompetitive, raising the cost of

United States manufactured goods by more than 40 percent since

2000, compared to less than 20 percent in Germany and France.

(5) Between 2000 and 2010, United States manufacturing

employment shrunk by one-third after holding steady for 30

years at nearly 20,000,000 jobs.

(6) The American economy needs a stable dollar, fixed

exchange rates, and money supply controlled by the market not

the government.

(7) The gold standard puts control of the money supply with

the market instead of the Federal Reserve.

(8) The gold standard means legal tender defined by and

convertible into a certain quantity of gold.

(9) Under the gold standard through 1913 the United States

economy grew at an annual average of four percent, one-third

larger than the growth rate since then and twice the level

since 2000.

(10) The international gold exchange standard from 1914 to

1971 did not provide for a United States dollar convertible

into gold, and therefore helped cause the Great Depression and

stagflation.

(11) The Federal Reserve's trickle down policy of expanding

the money supply with no demand for it has enriched the owners

of financial assets but endangered the jobs, wages, and savings

of blue collar workers.

(12) Restoring American middle-class prosperity requires

change in monetary policy authorized to Congress in Article I,

Section 8, Clause 5 of the Constitution.

SEC. 2. DEFINE THE DOLLAR IN TERMS OF GOLD.

Effective 30 months after the date of enactment of this Act-

(1) the Secretary of the Treasury (in this Act referred to

as the ``Secretary'') shall define the dollar in terms of a

fixed weight of gold, based on that day's closing market price

of gold; and

(2) Federal Reserve Banks shall make Federal Reserve notes

exchangeable with gold at the statutory gold definition of the

dollar.

SEC. 3. DISCLOSURE OF HOLDING.

During the 30-month period following the date of enactment of this

Act, the United States Government shall take timely and reasonable

steps to disclose all of its holdings of gold, together with a

contemporaneous report of any United States governmental purchases or

sales, thus enhancing the ability of the market and of market

participants to arrive at the fixed dollar-gold parity in an orderly

fashion.

How Amazon Convinced Millions of People to Welcome “Listening Devices” Into Their Homes

Whether it’s being told to turn on the lights or asked a health question, the voice known as Alexa has embedded Amazon’s technology deep in the lives of hundreds of millions of people since the company first launched its interactive Echo smart speaker in 2014.

From the start, Amazon has marketed Alexa as a virtual assistant who helps make navigating daily life easier, more efficient and entertaining for people and families.

But as the new FRONTLINE documentary Amazon Empire: The Rise and Reign of Jeff Bezos reports, the multi-billion-dollar company’s increasingly ubiquitous Alexa technology — which is now compatible with more than 100,000 products — doesn’t just serve the customer. It also serves a key strategic objective for Amazon itself.

“Alexa is one more way for Amazon to gather extremely valuable data,” Meredith Whittaker, co-director of the A.I. Now Institute at NYU, tells FRONTLINE in the above excerpt. “And this data collection is extremely important to this business model. It’s extremely hard to do … convincing people to just deploy something like this in their home is— it’s a brilliant trick.”

It’s one that’s helping Amazon in a quest to dominate the future — not just of commerce, but also artificial intelligence.

“They’re trying to move as intimately as possible and as quietly as possible into everyday life,” Shoshana Zuboff, author of The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, says in the film. “Amazon wants to have the entire environment, essentially miked… All these intimacies, all this insight is being integrated, analyzed and integrated. That is an extraordinary kind of power that has never before existed.”

In the film, airing Feb. 18, producer and director James Jacoby presses Amazon’s head of devices, Dave Limp, on whether the company did a good enough job telling customers about Alexa’s privacy implications – including the revelation last year that Amazon employs thousands of people around the world to listen to and transcribe some voice recordings in an attempt to improve the Alexa algorithm.

Google pulls 500 malicious Chrome extensions after researcher tip-off

Google has abruptly pulled over 500 Chrome extensions from its Web Store that researchers discovered were stealing browsing data and executing click fraud and malvertising after installing themselves on the computers of millions of users.

Depending on which way you look at it, that’s either a good result because they’re no longer free to infect users, or an example of how easy it is for malicious extensions to sneak on the Web Store and stay there for years without Google noticing.

That they were noticed at all is thanks to researcher Jamila Kaya who used Duo Security’s CRXcavator tool (also available at CRXcavator.io) to spot a handful of extensions that seemed suspicious, mostly themed around marketing and advertising.

Spotting dodgy extensions was only the start – she still had to connect them to one another to uncover recurring patterns that might highlight other offenders.

The first giveaway was that the extension code often looked like copycats of one another despite small changes to the names of internal functions designed to obscure this.

Another troubling similarity was the number of permissions requested. Enough to allow them to access browsing data and run when visiting websites using HTTPS.

Working with Duo Security, they eventually identified 70 extensions that seemed to be related to one another. All also contacted similar command and control networks and seemed to have been designed to detect and counteract sandbox analysis.

Ad fraud was the biggest activity – contacting domains without the user being aware – as well as redirecting users to malware and phishing domains.

YouTube: coronavirus videos will be automatically demonetized until further notice

Coronavirus has claimed its latest, albeit unexpected victim: the revenues of those YouTube creators who publish content about the disease.

Even by YouTube's many and “creative” demonetization standards, this latest one stands out.

The announcement was made almost in passing on Creator Insider, a channel run by YouTube employees.

The giant is updating its guidelines, the host said, “to reflect” – i.e., reclassify – the coronavirus outbreak as a sensitive event.

And that means all videos focusing on the subject have been demonetized.

The decision will remain in force until further notice, the host remarked – and moved on to other topics.

But given that coronavirus has dominated the news cycle around the world and across various media formats, including social media like YouTube for weeks now – many publishers must be left scratching their heads as to why the platform made this decision, and why now.

Some commenters wondered if the demonetization would hit only smaller creators, while big media outlets and “late night hosts” would still be able to discuss coronavirus, and continue to make money on YouTube.

YouTube, and its owner, Google, are unlikely to offer any further explanation of their “thought process” here, as that would likely shed uncomfortable amounts of light on the way their business operates.

Meanwhile, YouTube officially describes its definition of “sensitive events” in its “Advertiser-friendly content guidelines” meant to help creators push out videos they can monetize with ads.

According to these rules, sensitive events are “atrocious acts that result in the loss of human lives” – mass shootings, armed conflict, death, tragic events, and terrorist acts.

Here we see an example of Google's habitually “atrocious” habit of using deliberately broad and vague language that is open to subsequent interpretation.

On one hand, if strictly enforced, these guidelines would demonetize every channel dealing with current news in pretty much any format. On the other, the outbreak of any virus – including a potentially deadly virus whose spread has by all accounts already peaked – hardly qualifies as “an atrocious act.”

But YouTube is now so big as a platform that it can apparently afford the luxury of either being, or coming across as always looking for new ways to demonetize content at the expense of creators – and not caring about how that affects the community.

WHO Holds Secret Talks With Tech Giants To Stop Spread of Coronavirus “Misinformation”

The World Health Organization has held talks with tech giants to stop the spread of coronavirus “misinformation,” despite the fact that some things once labeled “misinformation” have since turned out to be true.

The meeting was organized by the WHO but hosted by Facebook at its Menlo Park campus in California. Attendees included representatives from Amazon, Twilio, Dropbox, Google, Verizon, Salesforce, Twitter, YouTube, Airbnb, Kinsa and Mapbox.

According to the WHO’s Andy Pattison, an “infodemic” of misinformation has accompanied the coronavirus outbreak and big tech giants need to respond by censoring “fake news” content.

Both Facebook and Twitter already announced that they would remove content deemed to be misinformation regarding the virus, a dangerous new lurch to mass censorship given that what is considered “misinformation” is totally subjective and beholden to partisan bias.

Two clear examples of “misinformation” surrounding the coronavirus subsequently turned out to be true.

The first example was claims that China was hiding the true number of coronavirus victims, once labeled a “conspiracy theory” by the media but subsequently proven accurate on Friday when 14,800 new coronavirus cases were reported in a single day.

The second example was suspicions that the virus could have emerged from a bio-safety level 4 research lab in Wuhan.

This contention has been aggressively attacked by the media and big tech giants – Zero Hedge was even banned by Twitter for reporting it – but a new study by scientists at the prestigious South China University of Technology in Guangzhou has confirmed that “the killer coronavirus probably originated from a laboratory in Wuhan.”

Chinese dissidents and others have been defamed and in some cases imprisoned by authorities, but the media continues to treat any questioning of the official Chinese Communist Party narrative with disdain.

A brawl broke out at a Bernie Sanders rally in Colorado on Sunday when a supporter of the Vermont senator confronted another man for wearing a T-shirt that read “Black Guns Matter,” a report said.

The man sporting the shirt, who is black, told CBS Denver that he was recording the presidential hopeful at the Colorado Convention Center when another rally attendee called him “racist” because of his shirt.

“He had a problem with the shirt I was wearing,” the man, who was not identified, told the news station.

“I was recording the event, he walks up and calls me a racist. But I thought, ‘What’s he know about black lives, about discrimination, or, for that matter, the representation of the shirt.'”

At some point during the confrontation, the two men began wrestling and the scuffle spilled over a metal barrier that separated the crowd from the stage, video captured by the news channel shows.

New Way to Generate Electricity From Rain Can Power 100 LED Bulbs Per Drop

Tapping into the water cycle and generating electricity from rainy days could be one way to grow our renewable energy use.

Until now, scientists have been unable to get water droplets to produce a significant amount of power – but we may finally have a breakthrough.

While we’re still a long way from umbrellas that double up as generators, the latest approach shows there might be a way to get power from rain showers at a level of efficiency that makes these systems practical.

New research has found a method that could generate enough power from a single droplet of rain to light up 100 LED bulbs. That’s a big jump forward in efficiency, in the region of several thousand times.

“Our research shows that a drop of 100 microlitres of water released from a height of 15 centimetres [5.9 inches] can generate a voltage of over 140V, and the power generated can light up 100 small LED lights,” says biomedical engineer Wang Zuankai from the City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

That sounds like a surprising amount of voltage, but the engineers used some ingenious tricks to make it happen.

Scientists have been looking into this type of power production for years, but the physics of converting the energy of raindrops into electricity are much harder to do than harvesting the energy from a rising tide or a flowing stream.

One of the improvements the team built into their droplet-based electricity generator (DEG) was the use of a polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE film, which is able to accumulate a surface charge as it’s continuously hit by water droplets, until it gradually reaches saturation.

The team found that as water droplets hit the surface and spread out, the drops act as a ‘bridge’ that connects two electrodes: an aluminium electrode and an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode (with the PTFE on top).

President Bashar al-Assad said on Monday that Aleppo gained the victory and Syria as well, adding that the Syrian army will never hesitate to carry out its national duties.

President al-Assad added in a televised speech on the occasion of the latest liberation wars that the Battle of liberating Aleppo and Idleb countryside is continuous regardless of some sound empty bubbles coming from the north.

President al-Assad began the speech by saluting the people of Aleppo for their steadfastness, faith, bravery, and sacrifices.

And because it is so, its people did not settle for steadfastness just in the sense of bearing of pain and suffering and acceptance of the status quo; but rather in the sense of work and production that persisted throughout the years of the siege despite the conditions that contradict any economic sense.

“Despite that, this city kept contributing – even if at a bare minimum – to national economy, and I am confident that this type of steadfastness which reflects a concrete will and a deep-rooted sense of belonging is what will raise Aleppo from the ashes of war and restore its natural and leading position in Syria’s economy,” President al-Assad said.
