MOSCOW (AP) — Russian pranksters claim they called U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders pretending to be climate activist Greta Thunberg and offered Thunberg's support to his campaign.

Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexey Stolyarov, who have fooled many high-profile victims around the world, posted a recording of the phone call on YouTube on Thursday.

The call itself took place in early December, but the duo decided to release it more than two months later because of Sanders' success in Iowa and New Hampshire, Kuznetsov told The Associated Press in a Skype interview.

A representative for the campaign didn't comment Friday on the authenticity of the call.

Federal law enforcement officials were alerted in November that several Democrats had received calls from someone believed to be outside the U.S. who was claiming to represent the teenage Thunberg and was trying to set up calls or in-person meetings with members of Congress, a U.S. official told The Associated Press. Some of the congressional offices reported the incidents to the FBI and the Capitol Police, the official said. The person was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

In the recording, an unnamed female pretends to be Greta, and Stolyarov plays her father, Svante. They offer to lend support to the campaign of a man who identifies himself as Sanders, and the man welcomes it.

The 78-year-old Sanders suggests that “Greta” make a statement in his support and that they do an event together when she next comes to the U.S. “I would be really appreciative,” he says.

“Greta" then proposes to record a rap song in support of Sanders together with “singer Billie Eilish and rapper Kanye West."

Sanders says that would be “terrific” and tries to end the conversation, but the duo says “Greta” is about to visit Russia and needs advice on how to behave there.

The Vermont senator tells her to be careful to not be used for PR purposes. “I think what you don’t want to do is simply walk in there and get used,” he says.

“Russia and (President Vladimir) Putin has been very bad, as far as I know, on climate change. They have a lot of oil, oil is important for their economy, they make a lot of money on oil,” Sanders explains.

After that, “Greta" tells Sanders that he was recruited by the KGB in 1988 when he visited Russia and has since been a “sleeper agent."

“Now it’s time to wake up and fulfill your mission, become president of the United States, build communism in the United States and work for Russia!” she says, after which Sanders appears to hang up the phone.

Kuznetsov told the AP that the call was one of many in the comedy duo's new project dubbed “Stars Save the Earth,” in which they call high-ranking politicians and celebrities pretending to be Thunberg.

“Many laugh at Bernie Sanders (and say) that he is a KGB agent and wants to build communism in the U.S. Since he calls himself a democratic socialist, we decided to play up this topic — the topic of Sanders being a recruited Russian agent,” Kuznetsov said.

Stolyarov added that Thunberg's name “opens doors to everyone." “Everyone, from presidents to street cleaners, are ready to talk to Greta Thunberg," he told the AP in a Skype interview.

Stolyarov insisted the pranksters didn't want to influence the presidential race in the U.S. in any way. In previous years, the two have been accused of having ties to the Kremlin - a notion they have repeatedly denied.

Kuznetsov said they didn't expect any repercussions for the prank. “It's not illegal, and we're well known in the U.S.,” he said.

DEEP STATE JUSTICE: Same DOJ Prosecutor Who Let Andrew McCabe Walk Gave a Sweetheart Deal to Imran Awan

The Department of Justice on Friday announced it has dropped its criminal investigation of Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

His lawyers made the announcement on Friday morning.

McCabe’s attorneys also said the case was closed.

Andrew McCabe leaked confidential investigation details and information to the media to “advance his personal interests” then lied about it to the Inspector General.

The Inspector General released a scathing report on McCabe in April 2018 stating he “lacked candor” following his illegal media leaks.

But on Friday J.P. Cooney the Chief Fraud and Public Corruption Section of the DOJ sent word to McCabe’s lawyers that Andrew McCabe will not face any punishment for his criminal acts.

Donald Barr’s son, US Attorney General William Barr is currently investigating the death of Jeffrey Epstein.

In 1973, Donald Barr, hired a young 20 year old college dropout named Jeffrey E. Epstein to teach math at the Dalton School. Epstein taught at the school between 1974 and 1976.

Donald Barr also wrote this sci-fi novel, Space Relations, about sex slavery in space.

Epstein went on to build a career in finance and became a multimillionaire. He served time in 2008 as a sex offender for having molested 36 girls, some as young as 14.

In July 2019, Epstein was arrested on federal charges of sex trafficking of minors in Florida and New York. Epstein committed suicide while being held in US Federal custody on August 10, 2019.

US Attorney General William Barr was appointed by the Trump administration in February 2019.

PRINCE Andrew visited a billionaire tycoon accused of raping 10 teens at a Bahamas mansion.

Peter Nygard, 77, is the second of the Duke's associates to be accused of sex offences, following his friendship with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

A lawsuit filed in the Southern District of New York claimed that Nygard plied his subjects with alcohol and drugs before they were violently assaulted, raped and sodomised.

Nygard, worth a reported £1.3bn and runs women's clothing company Nygard International, has strongly denied the allegations.

There is no suggestion he knew of Nygard’s alleged criminality.

In the case against Nygard, the teenagers, some as young as 14, launched a class action lawsuit in Manhattan - claiming to have been a part of what was essentially a “sex trafficking ring”.

The suit alleges the girls would be entertained at so-called “pamper parties” where Nygard would have bartenders at his Mayan-themed vacation home spike their drinks with Rohypnol.

The lawsuit details how one of the victims who was 15-years-old at the time had been taken to Lyford Cay, Nygard's estate.

During the evening, Nygard allegedly tried to anally sodomise her before raping her and then asking her to defecate and urinate in his mouth in a bizarre sexual fetish known as Coprophilia.

Another of complainants tells how her encounter with Nygard began with him showing her pornography.

Nygard then asked her to use a sex toy on him and when it ended, he raped her “causing her extraordinary trauma and pain”.

A press release about the lawsuit stated: “This horrific episode is just one of many like it detailed in the complaint against Nygard and his business entities by 10 brave women.

“The class action lawsuit accuses Nygard of sex trafficking and rape - all financed and facilitated by his family of corporations and their employees.”

Ten women in total, now aged between 18 to 36, have detailed their alleged encounters.

Nine of the women are from the Bahamas while one is from the US, although none have had their names revealed in the suit.

The Geopolitics Of Biological Weapons, Part 1: A Useful And Timely Factual Overview

The US government and its many agencies and educational and health institutions, have for many decades conducted intensive research into biological warfare, in many cases strongly focused on race-specific pathogens.

In a report to the US Congress, the Department of Defense revealed that its program of creating artificial biological agents included modifying non-fatal viruses to make them lethal, and genetic engineering to alter the immunology of biological agents to make treatment and vaccinations impossible. The military report admitted that at the time it operated about 130 bio-weapons research facilities, dozens at US universities and others at many international sites outside the purview of the US Congress and the jurisdiction of the courts.

A US Army operating manual from 1956 stated explicitly that biological and chemical warfare were an integral operating portion of US military strategy, were not restricted in any way, and that Congress had given the military “First Strike” authority on their use. In 1959, an attempt by Congress to remove this first-strike authority was defeated by the White House and bio-chemical weapons expenditures increased from $75 million to almost $350 million. That was an enormous amount of money in the early 1960s.

How do I know you ask? Well, for Valentine's Day, my wife reserved front row seats for us and my 13 year old son tonight at the show in Saint Petersburg, Florida. A couple months ago when she told me she had reserved seats for a show, I just figured it was something like Blue Man or a Chinese circus, you know, just music and dance entertainment. Well, it was that, but much much more. It had a hopeful spiritual message and to my wonderful surprise, it felt like it was very much in line with THE GREAT AWAKENING. Let me explain. The show consisted of various traditional Chinese musical and dance acts, each conveying ancient folk tales and myths, usually highlighting honor, morality, love, and integrity. All the music was performed by a highly skilled classical Chinese orchestra. Between each act, a male and female speaker would say a few words, one in English and the other in Chinese, providing context and narrative.

What became clear from the very beginning was that we were watching a renaissance of the traditional Chinese art and spiritual culture that existed in China before the "red scourge" of Communism. Just as Russia had been a Christian culture under the Eastern Orthodox Church before the Bolshevik revolution, China had its own traditional culture before the Chinese Communist Party came to power in 1949. Indeed, China was once known as "the Land of the Divine". The Chinese people once "sought harmony among Heaven, Earth, and humankind, revered the divine, and followed the course of nature." It has a very warm Christian feel to it, but without the Scofield bible thumping hypocrisy and arm twisting associated with the Evangelicalism we have here in America today.

Anyway, these traditional Chinese art forms and spiritual practitioners called "Fulan Dafa" have been under attack for decades in communist China and were nearly stamped out, but in 2006, a group of Chinese artists came together in New York City and started a mission to revive authentic Chinese culture. And sort of like the Amish, the Fulan Dafa have grown in number and in influence and may have even branched into investigative journalism, through the rise of The Epoch Times. Now, I had first read great articles from The Epoch Times posted on this board, but then a couple months ago, I saw a hit piece video by NBC or MSNBC alleging that The Epoch Times was funded by some wacky cult associated with Donald Trump. So, I figured if the MSM hates The Epoch Times, who gives Trump a fair shake, then they must be PRETTY GOOD, so I ordered an annual subscription and I couldn't be more pleased with their news content.

So, that's my "insight" into Shen Yun, but PLEASE do your own due diligence and TRUST and THINK for YOURSELVES. Just don't be suckered by shills and left wing radicals calling these people "cultists." Make up your own mind.

State Department Contracting Officer Sentenced to Prison for Bribery and Procurement Fraud Scheme

A contracting officer with the U.S. Department of State was sentenced today to 87 months of imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release after he was convicted of 13 counts of conspiracy, bribery, honest services wire fraud and making false statements.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney G. Zachary Terwilliger of the Eastern District of Virginia, Special Agent in Charge Marc Meyer of the U.S. Department of State Office of Inspector General and Assistant Director in Charge Timothy R. Slater of the FBI’s Washington Field Office made the announcement.

Zaldy N. Sabino, 60, of Fort Washington, Maryland, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady after Sabino’s conviction on Oct. 4, 2019. In addition to his term of imprisonment, Sabino was ordered to pay a $25,000 fine.

According to the evidence at trial, between November 2012 and early 2017, Sabino and the owner of a Turkish construction firm engaged in a bribery and procurement fraud scheme in which Sabino received at least $521,862.93 in cash payments from the Turkish owner while Sabino supervised multi-million dollar construction contracts awarded to the Turkish owner’s business partners and while Sabino made over a half million dollars in structured cash deposits into his personal bank accounts. Sabino concealed his unlawful relationship by, among other things, making false statements on financial disclosure forms and during his background reinvestigation.....

Former Generic Pharmaceutical Executive Pleads Guilty for Role in Criminal Antitrust Conspiracy

Fourth Executive to Be Charged in Ongoing Investigation

A former senior executive pleaded guilty today for his role in a conspiracy to fix prices, rig bids, and allocate customers for generic drugs, the Department of Justice announced.

According to court documents, from at least March 2013 until at least June 2015, Hector Armando Kellum, a former senior executive at a generic pharmaceutical company based in New Jersey, conspired to fix prices, rig bids, and allocate customers for generic drugs. The conspiracy affected products including, but not limited to, clobetasol and nystatin triamcinolone cream. Kellum’s co-conspirators included a generic pharmaceutical company headquartered in New York and various individuals, including Ara Aprahamian, who was indicted in Philadelphia on Feb. 4, 2020. Kellum has agreed to cooperate with the Antitrust Division’s ongoing investigation into criminal antitrust violations in the generic drug industry......

Two Executives Indicted in Long-Running Antitrust Conspiracy to Fix Prices for Disk Drive Components

A federal grand jury returned an indictment against Hitoshi Hashimoto and Hiroyuki Tamura for their role in a global conspiracy to fix prices for suspension assemblies used in hard disk drives, the Department of Justice announced today.

Hashimoto and Tamura, both Japanese citizens, are former top sales executives at NHK Spring Co. Ltd. (NHK Spring), which has pleaded guilty and been sentenced to pay a $28.5 million fine.

The indictment, filed yesterday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that, from at least as early as May 2008 and continuing until at least April 2016, Hashimoto and Tamura participated in a conspiracy with their competitors to stabilize, maintain, and fix the prices of suspension assemblies used in hard disk drives. The conspirators accomplished their scheme by, among other things, agreeing to refrain from competing on prices and allocating their respective market shares. The conspirators also exchanged pricing information including anticipated pricing quotes, which they used to inform their negotiations with U.S. and foreign customers that purchased suspension assemblies and produced hard disk drives for sale in, or delivery to, the United States and elsewhere.....

The bucket was on an Amazon server and was spotted on January 3rd

It was shutdown on January 15, after the Pentagon was contact by researchers

Soaring US ‘defense’ budget helped drive world military spending to 10-year high in 2019

Global military expenditures in 2019 saw their largest increase in 10 years, propelled in no small part by skyrocketing US “defense” budgets, which continue to dwarf some of the world’s next largest spenders combined.

Military spending among 170 countries jumped by 4 percent in 2019 compared to the prior year, sending the total to its highest level in a decade, according to an annual assessment released on Friday by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

While the new report attributes the soaring pay-outs to an “unstable international security environment,” Washington’s massive $53.4 billion “defense” hike – roughly equal to the UK’s entire military budget – played an outsized role in driving the numbers to their current 10-year record high.

China placed second on the list, spending around $181 billion last year as Beijing continues to modernize and expand its armed forces. Compared to 2018, both Washington and Beijing’s military budgets grew by some 6.6 percent, but while growth was similar between the two countries, the trends are “diverging” and the US is widening the gap, according to IISS research fellow Lucie Béraud-Sudreau.

“The budget increase in the US was the largest in 10 years, and spending has increased year-on-year since US President Donald Trump took office,” Béraud-Sudreau wrote in a blog post. “While spending is still rising in China, the pace of growth is decelerating.”

With total US military expenditures hitting nearly $685 billion in 2019, Washington continues to out-spend 11 countries combined – China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, India, the UK, France, Japan, Germany, South Korea, Brazil, and Italy. Though euphemistically termed “defense spending,” much of the US outlays finance a vast network of overseas bases and foreign troop deployments, some of them – such as in Iraq and Afghanistan – ongoing for the better part of two decades.

Military budgets in Europe have seen marked increases as Washington demanded its NATO partners contribute more to their own defense. However, US allies “still have some way to go before they would be able to act effectively without US military assistance,” the report notes, as it is unclear that the spending increases in 2019 “will significantly improve military capabilities in the near term.”

Will Pope Francis’s Global Education Pact for a ‘new humanism’ mobilize funding for population control?

ROME, February 14, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — American economist and population control proponent Jeffrey Sachs has announced that potential funding partners for Pope Francis’s May 2020 Global Education Pact to create a “new humanism” include U.S. billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates, China’s wealthiest business magnate, UNESCO and other United Nations agencies, and the Islamic Development Bank.

Speaking at a Vatican workshop on the Global Education Pact hosted by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, on February 6–7, Sachs said he had “spoken with some of the world’s wealthiest people” and is confident that an estimated $26-billion-a-year education fund can be secured.

“Here is where we’re going to get the funds,” he told invited guests, as he presented a slide of “Partners for the Global Pact for Education and a New Fund for Education.”

The list includes:

* European Union

* Major philanthropists (Bill Gates, Jack Ma, Mukesh Ambani)

* Islamic Development Bank

* UNESCO, UNICEF, other U.N. Agencies

* International Monetary Fund 

* U.N. Secretary-General’s SGD Advocates

* Youth for the Future

Sachs, a regular participant in pontifical academy conferences and an adviser to Pope Francis on sustainable development, said he had “recently” spoken with American, Chinese, and Indian billionaire business magnates Bill Gates, Jack Ma, and Mukesh Ambani about the project and had also visited the Islamic Development Bank.

Earlier this month, Edward Pentin of the National Catholic Register reported that the Vatican has been “drawing closer” to the Gates Foundation in recent months. Reliable sources told the Register that last November, Pope Francis had received Melinda Gates in an unpublicized private audience.

The danger of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for African women and children is not unknown.

In a 2018 interview, Obianuju Ekeocha, a pro-life activist and author of Target Africa, noted that Pope Francis has spoken out against the growing phenomenon of Western countries, entities, and foundations coming to Africa with “aid” and “gifts” with “strings attached.”

Ekeocha said the Church is “right in the heart of the storm.”

In the interview (and Target Africa) she identifies the Gates Foundation as one of the principal foundations that presents itself as a “friend” and tries to “partner with the Church, because the Church has such a great network everywhere across the continent of Africa.”

She added: “The Church then sees contraception programs, condom programs being targeted towards children, and the bishops speak out and call it what it is: cultural imperialism or ideological neo-colonialism.”

“The Church has to be the line of defense against them,” the pro-life scientist said. 

In 2012, Ekeocha wrote an open letter to Melinda Gates in response to her plan and promise to implant the seeds of her “legacy” — i.e., $5 billion in pledges — in 69 of the poorest countries in the world, most of which are in sub-Saharan Africa, in order to ensure that the African woman is less fertile.

The Argentine prelate said Pope Francis believes that, when it comes to education, “we need the language of the mind” but also “language of the values, the language of the heart.” It is very important, Sánchez said, to have education that puts at the center the human person, the dignity of the human person,” as well as “the question of gender, the question of woman.”

He said the content of the Global Education Pact will focus particularly on women, in part with a view to combatting new forms of slavery and human-trafficking.

The academy chancellor also said he hopes it will focus on the “truth that comes from the sciences” such as “climate change” and “evolution.”

A New York prosecutor described Harvey Weinstein on Friday as a "master of the universe" who abused and discarded "disposable" women for decades, perpetually haunted that one day one of them would "walk out from the shadows and call him exactly what he was - an abusive rapist."

In a vivid, three-hour closing argument, New York Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi told jurors that day had arrived.

She called Weinstein a "predator" with a "sure-fire insurance policy - the witnesses were standing in line to get into his universe."

"The universe is run by me, and they don't get to complain when they get stepped on, spit on, demoralized and, yes, raped and abused by me - the king," Illuzzi said, pacing directly in front of the jury box, a day after defense attorney Donna Rotunno had chosen to remain mostly behind a podium facing jurors.

Feb. 6 is designated as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. In support of this important issue, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) joins other U.S. government agencies and the international community in calling for an end to the practice of female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C).

FGM/C is the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for no medical reason. The practice has no medical benefit. It is a human rights violation and a crime under federal law. When committed against children, it is a form of child abuse. The U.S. government opposes FGM/C no matter the type, severity, or motivation for performing it. People who commit this crime can face prison time and significant immigration consequences. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates approximately 500,000 girls in the United States are at risk of having or have had FGM/C performed on them.

As we begin a new decade, we reiterate our strong and unwavering support for local, national and international efforts to combat FGM/C. We welcome the growing number of states upholding laws that criminalize FGM/C.

We continue to work with interagency partners to implement the Department of Homeland Security’s Female Genital Mutilation or Cutting (FGM/C) Outreach Strategy (PDF, 263 KB). We also will continue to identify opportunities to end FGM/C in the United States and worldwide.

The financial workings of one of the most opaque regimes in the world could be about to be subjected to unprecedented scrutiny, after it was decided the son of the dictator of Equatorial Guinea should face trial for corruption in France.

Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has ruled Africa’s richest country per capita for almost 40 years, amid persistent accusations of corruption, electoral fraud and even cannibalism.

President Obiang describes his regime’s management of Equatorial Guinea’s vast oil revenues as a “state secret” and in the past two years the country has been deemed too opaque to include on Transparency International’s global corruption index.

Yet the outside world could be about to get its first look into how the country’s elite siphon off public funds - through the finances of President Obiang’s son.

Teodorin Nguema Obiang has already had $71 million worth of his assets seized by the US, including a $30 million Malibu mansion, a $38.5 million Gulfstream jet, a Ferrari worth more than $500,000 and Michael Jackson memorabilia worth almost $2 million.

And the 47-year-old playboy prince, who was named his father’s Vice-President earlier this year, looks set to be tried by a Paris court on charges including corruption, money-laundering and embezzlement of public funds.

The court is yet to announce a date for the trial, but sources close to the investigation told the AFP news agency the hearing will go ahead.

The process began when a French judge launched a landmark investigation in May 2009 into whether President Obiang and two other African leaders used state money to buy luxury cars and homes in Paris and on the French Riviera. It became known as the case of "ill-gotten gains".

Transparency International filed a complaint against the leaders, who denied any wrongdoing.

Lawyers for the Obiang family have repeatedly tried to scupper the proceedings, and achieved some success when a French court of appeal ruled activists couldn’t sue foreign heads of state.

But a subsequent ruling authorised the investigation, and in July 2012 they ordered the seizure of Mr Obiang’s vast Paris mansion, which featured gold-plated taps, a spa and an in-house nightclub, reportedly worth more than €100 million.

Other possessions, including a fleet of Feraris, Bugattis and other luxury cars and a clock which was alone worth €3 million, were also seized.

Despite its huge oil wealth and that of its ruling elite, Equatorial Guinea is also home to some of the most deprived communities in Africa. More than half the population lives beneath the poverty threshold.

President Obiang seized power of the country in 1979, overthrowing President Francisco Macias Nguema, a leader whose rule since independence saw the deaths of thousands. The former leader was tried and executed.

The accusations of cannibalism against the dictator stem from an interview with an exiled political opponent, Severo Moto, on Spanish radio in 2004.

In it, Moto said President Obiang was a demon who “systematically eats his political rivals”.

Making clear he wasn’t just speaking in metaphors, Moto said the ruler was “an authentic cannibal”.

“He has just devoured a police commissioner,” he is quoted as saying. “I say devoured as this commissioner was buried without his testicles and brain.”

More substantiated claims suggest President Obiang licensed foreign companies to dump toxic waste on the pristine Atlantic island of Annobon.

And ex ministers have testified as to how the Obiang regime encouraged diplomats to use their immunity to smuggle large amounts of illicit drugs all over the world, even in the president’s own baggage.

Earlier this year, Equatorial Guinea filed a lawsuit with the The Hague asking it to end the French investigation. But even if it goes ahead, as now seems likely, Mr Obiang probably won’t see his day in court. French officials say the trial is expected to take place without the defendant attending.

In this African delta port, where children run barefoot through oil palm plantations and men pilot dugout canoes through mangrove swamps, the arrival of a ship from Europe has often meant disruption.

Two local place names recall the first contacts with Europe. Escravos and Forcados are the Portuguese words for slaves and indentured. Today, a collection of steel drums stacked behind a villager's family compound here speak of the latest trade with Europe - 10,000 barrels of toxic waste.

As safety laws in Europe and the United States push toxic disposal costs up to $2,500 a ton, waste brokers are turning their attention to the closest, poorest and most unprotected shores - West Africa. Offers for a Dump Site

From Morocco to the Congo, virtually every country on West Africa's coast reports receiving offers this year from American or European companies seeking cheap sites to dispose of hazardous waste. Fees offered African recipients have gone as low as $3 a ton.

Some West African countries rank among the poorest in the world, and the offers have been tempting.

In February, officials in Guinea-Bissau signed a five-year contract to bury 15 million tons of toxic wastes from European tanneries and pharmaceutical companies. In return, Guinea-Bissau would receive a yearly payment of $120 million - slightly less than the country's gross national product of $150 million. North Europe's Waste

Two thousand miles to the south, in Congo, Government officials signed a contract to store a million tons of chemical waste from northern Europe in return for $84 million.

But when a furor erupted over what African newspapers now call toxic terrorism, both African governments quickly repudiated the contracts.

Dozens of letters from angry readers have been inclined to regard the dumping of toxic wastes as the lastest in a series of historical traumas for the continent, read an editorial last month in West Africa, an English-language weekly. The traumas cited were slavery, colonialism and unpayable foreign debts. 'Garbage Dump' for West

Similar outrage has surfaced in the pages of Jeune Afrique, the region's largest-circulation French-language magazine.

It is no longer a secret for anyone that some African leaders, eager to see their Swiss bank accounts grow, would not hesitate to transform the African continent into a garbage dump for industrial wastes from industrialized countries, wrote one reader, Basi Nanchi Ya Rwin-Cin, a Zaire student.

From Niger, which received offers in May from a Dutch company to store chemical waste, Adamou Seybou wrote: Evidently, the Westerners explain that these wastes, once buried, will no longer be dangerous. If that's true, why aren't they happy to bury the wastes in their own countries?

In a Nigerian magazine, African Concord, Sam Omatseye wrote: That Italy did not contemplate Australia or South Africa or some other place for industrial waste re-echoes what Europe has always thought of Africa: A wasteland. And the people who live there, waste beings. Firing Squad in Nigeria

Outrage is particularly strong in Nigeria, where officials now warn that people caught importing toxic waste will face the firing squad.

We are prescribing the death penalty for any Nigerian, any foreigner, caught in the act of bringing in toxic waste, Duro Onabule, Nigeria spokesman, said in an interview in Lagos. There will be no concession to appeals from foreign governments.

In another stern reaction, the Ivory Coast adopted a law in early July that provides for prison terms up to 20 years and fines up to $1.6 million for individuals who import toxic or nuclear waste into the Ivory Coast.

On West Africa's coast, there are two confirmed cases of toxic dumping, and each has led to the jailing of European businessmen.

In March in Guinea, a Norwegian shipping company, A.S. Bulk Handling Inc. dumped 15,000 tons of a substance officially listed as raw material for bricks in an abandoned quarry on Kssa, a resort island near Conakry. Ash From Philadelphia

But soon weekenders from the mainland noticed that the island's vegetation was starting to shrivel. A Government investigation discovered that the material was incinerator ash from Philadelphia, the first shipment under a contract to dispose of 85,000 tons of chemical wastes in Guinea.

On July 2, a Norwegian freighter completed removal of the waste. But Sigmund Stromme, Norway's Honorary Consul and a shipping agent in Conakry, remains in jail, accused of being a brain behind this affair.

Here, in this backwater port on the Benin River, oceangoing ships usually dock here only three or four times a year. But between September 1987 and last May, five ships docked here with loads of hazardous waste.

Their destination was a dirt lot in a residential area off Koko's one paved street. Sunday Nana, who lives next door, said that he first asked the Italian importer, Gianfranco Raffaelli, for a monthly rent of $200. After some haggling, they settled for $100 a month. Not Told What Barrels Contained

We were paid 10 naira a day to work unloading the barrels, said a neighbor named Daniel, who was found on a recent afternoon padding around Mr. Nana's compound in rubber thongs. Ten naira is the equivalent of $2.50. Looking at the multicolored steel drums, some of which had fallen over and started to leak, Daniel said that the white man never told him what the barrels contained.

In Lagos, Nigeria's Health Minister, Ransome Olikoye Kuti, said in an interview: It's terrible because Africans are not very aware of the dangers of toxic wastes. Many of our people are not literate and could easily become contaminated by the waste.

According to a diplomat who talked to a team of experts from the United States Environmental Protection Agency who visited the site last month, the most dangerous poisons are polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCB's. [ On Friday, Nigeria's news agency reported that three of the drums contained a highly radioactive material, according to experts from the Japanese Atomic Energy Research Agency. On Wednesday, Nigerian health officials reported that three workers suffered severe chemical burns while moving the waste. ] Leaves a Partner in Jail On June 2, the day Nigerian newspapers broke the news about the dump here, Mr. Raffaelli, a long-term resident of Nigeria, boarded an airplane for Europe. He left behind an Italian partner, Desiderio Perazzi, who is now in a Nigerian jail.

Two Italian ships are expected to dock here later in July to remove the waste. In June, to press Italy to act, the Nigerian authorities seized an Italian ship in Lagos harbor that had nothing to do with the waste.

According to European environmentalists, the Guinean and Nigerian dumping cases share similar elements with toxic disposal contracts drawn up in other West African countries - the Western disposal companies rarely have track records of safe waste disposal, the proposed disposal sites are not studied for their geological suitability and the receiving countries are not accurately informed.

European businessmen offering disposal contracts to West Africans this year represented companies incorporated in the Isle of Man, Gibraltar and Liechtenstein - places having minimal requirements for incorporation.

Intercontrat, a company which has proposed deals in Guinea Bissau, Senegal and Benin, is based in Switzerland and consequently is exempt from European Community regulations that require countries importing toxic waste to give their informed consent. Fishing Grounds Susceptible

In Equatorial Guinea, a London newsletter, Africa Analysis, reported in May that the President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, had approved a plan by a British company to store 10 million drums of toxic waste on Annobon, a small island. The inhabited island is of porous volcanic rock and seepage would have threatened the rich fishing grounds of the Gulf of Guinea if the contract had gone through.

Furthermore, the Western companies have not practiced truth in labeling when sending wastes to Africa.

Complex organic matter and ordinary industrial wastes were phrases used in a 10-year toxic waste disposal contract Benin authorities signed Jan. 12 with Sesco, a company registered in Gibraltar.

Koko's deadly shipment entered Nigeria under an import permit for nonexplosive, nonradioactive and non-self-combusting chemicals. A 'Dump Watch' Planned

Since late May, African leaders have condemned the practice at a series of multinational forums - the Organization of African Unity, the United Nations and the Economic Community of West African States.

In late June, at the West African meeting, each of the 16 member states pledged to enact stiff penalties for toxic dumpers. At the urging of Nigeria, a leader in the anti-dumping campaign, West African countries agreed to set up a monitoring system, a dump watch.

By mid-July, two countries, Liberia and Sierra Leone, had announced discoveries of foreign toxic waste dumps in their territories.

Today, dozens of African officials -in Guinea, in Congo and in Nigeria -are in jail on charges of working with European disposal firms.

In the case of Koko, the Italian press started publishing reports of the dump in March, but Nigerian diplomats in Italy apparently never contacted Lagos. The issue only became known here in June when Nigerian students in Italy sent English translations of the articles to Nigerian newspapers.

On a a recent visit here, this reporter was detained and questioned for six hours by the Nigerian police. The police seized his film and notes and warned him not to write about toxic waste in Nigeria.

Later in Lagos, Mr. Onabule, the Government spokesman, apologized for the local official's actions and said that the Government wants international attention drawn to the problem of toxic dumping in Africa.

Europe wouldn't take the ship's stinking, poisonous cargo. So it sailed to Africa and dumped the toxic mess into an Ivory Coast lagoon. Just the most recent example of western nations using Africa as a toxic waste dump.

The worst is when it rains. The water flows through the streets of Abidjan, the capital city of Ivory Coast, located next to a series of lagoons. With the water comes a toxic soup of industrial poison - a dark, glistening mess reeking of sulfur and rotten eggs. The caustic fumes it releases cause vomiting, nosebleeds, headache and rashes.

The hospital in Cocody, a downtown neighborhood in this city of 4 million, is in a state of high alert. Women stand waiting in the hallways, pressing paper masks tightly against their noses and mouths. Masks are currently a hot commodity in the Ivory Coast, where street dealers sell them for 20 West African centimes apiece.

A little over a month ago, a fleet of tanker trucks loaded with a toxic brew of cleaning chemicals and gasoline and crude oil slop was dispatched into the streets of Abidjan. Under cover of night, the drivers secretly dumped their loads in 14 locations around the city - near vegetable fields, fisheries and water reservoirs. All told, the cargo amounted to 528 cubic meters (18,857 cubic feet) of toxic waste that had reached the West African coast on board an oil and cargo freighter.

Now many residential neighborhoods adjoining the dumpsites are all but deserted. When news broke of the first casualties, thousands packed their belongings onto donkey carts and buses and moved to the nearby forests - from which many had only recently fled to escape the violence of the country's civil war. Angry demonstrators poured through Abidjan's streets. The transportation minister, who had resigned over the scandal, was seriously beaten in broad daylight. The toxic slop has already claimed the lives of seven people, four of them children, and more than 9,000 have fallen ill, according to official figures. And although the vapors are gradually becoming less toxic, this is no reason for optimism. The disaster has crippled the city's garbage collection, prompting fears in the medical community of epidemic disease.

The disaster is instructive: This is what happens when affluent western societies run out of places to dump their waste; when increasingly stringent environmental laws at home mean skyrocketing waste disposal costs; when criminal profiteers seek low-cost solutions.

The dead and sick in Abidjan demonstrate the failures of government agencies, of the unscrupulousness of businessmen and the dubious nature of international agreements like the Basel Convention, which has in fact banned the international transport of toxic waste to developing countries since 1989. For Achim Steiner, director of United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), the toxic shipment dumped in the Ivory Coast is "a particularly painful example of how illegal waste disposal causes human suffering."

Removing European waste

Some experts see Abidjan's toxic cocktail as Africa's biggest environmental scandal yet. But the odyssey of the Probo Koala reveals the scandal as a sordid story that unfolded in the heart of Europe.

It began on the afternoon of July 2. As the ship was unloaded in Amsterdam's petroleum port, a west wind carried its sharp stench into nearby residential neighborhoods, where residents notified the police. "This is the worst stench we have ever experienced here," said an employee of Amsterdam Port Services (APS), a waste disposal company. APS took a sample of the black substance from one of the ship's tanks.

Though declared as "waste water" used to clean gasoline shipping tanks, chemical analysis told a different story. The hydrocarbons in the material contained high concentrations of a substance known as mercaptan - a substance which is found in some crude oils and is produced by decaying vegetable matter, which is highly toxic - and smelly - in high concentrations. Authorities halted the unloading of the waste. The captain of the ship, which was Greek-owned and registered in Panama, angrily turned down a proposal by APS officials to dispose of the waste properly at special facilities in Rotterdam. The cost would have been about $250,000, plus another $250,000 in contractual penalties for the ship's likely delayed arrival at its next port of call in Estonia.

For executives at Trafigura, a Dutch oil trading company with annual sales of $28 billion, that cost was too high. Management decided to send the ship on its way.

Three days later, the Probo Koala set sail again, now bound for Estonia. Under international regulations governing the cross-border shipping of hazardous waste, German authorities should have been notified of the ship's passage to German and Danish waters. Amsterdam port officials did send an urgent message to their counterparts in Paldiski, an Estonian port, informing them that a ship with a "suspicious cargo" was headed their way. The Probo Koala was also unable to get rid of its chemical soup in Paldiski, where it took on a shipment of gasoline bound for Africa. After unloading the gasoline in Nigeria, the Trafigura-chartered vessel arrived in the Ivory Coast in August. A company called Tommy, which had just been established in July, took delivery of the slop which the European ports had turned away.

Part II: The "Ivorian Chernobyl"

The Ivorian media was filled with speculation over the incident. Was Tommy established specifically for this deal? And did Trafigura play a role? Both Trafigura and members of the president's family held shares in a company called Puma Energy, which awarded Tommy the contract to dispose of the toxic sludge the ship was carrying. Officials at Trafigura's headquarters in the Netherlands have denied any involvement in Tommy.

Local papers came under pressure for reports on what they described as the "Ivorian Chernobyl." Two journalists were arrested, along with seven employees of the waste disposal companies. Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo, who may be involved in the waste scandal through his family members, promptly dismissed the entire government.

SPIEGEL has obtained a copy of a confidential fax the captain of the Probo Koala sent to his African partner company, in which he writes that the load was "not waste water from normal shipping operations," but "chemical waste water" that exceeded allowable limits.

Records documenting the ship's movement show that the Probo Koala spent a lengthy period of time this year off the coast of Gibraltar and the Spanish city of Algeciras, where it served as a sort of "bunker ship" for chemical wastes from other ships - a claim Trafigura has denied.

According to an analysis by experts at Amsterdam's APS, the material's characteristics suggested that it was waste material from refineries. Trafigura, however, has said the oil waste on the Probo Koala had accumulated in the ship's lower tank after "multiple cleanings." The chemical cocktail, says Trafigura, developed as a result of "the addition of too much soda."

A trend in Europe

Whatever subsequent studies reveal, insiders are concerned about what is clearly a growing trend. Global trade will continue to generate waste scandals, says UNEP director Steiner, because "the smuggling of hazardous waste is becoming more and more lucrative." Steiner wants to see his agency better equipped to identify such "corrupt deals with deadly consequences" before they take place and to have "tough penalties" imposed on violators. The UN agency plans to send $13.5 million in immediate aid to the Ivory Coast.

The international environmental organization Greenpeace also fears that emerging nations and their often corrupt regimes are once again offering the industrialized world inexpensive waste disposal options. Although the practice had subsided somewhat in recent years as a result of various treaties, there are now growing reports of attempts to export toxic waste. This has prompted Gerd Leipold, Executive Director of Greenpeace International, to warn of a new "toxic waste colonialism." As a number of recent cases illustrate, Leipold's concerns are not unfounded:

•Bales of sorted plastic remnants collected under Germany's Green Dot household recycling program ended up in the Egyptian desert.

•In Nigeria, a businessman was paid $100 a month to store thousands of containers of Italian toxic waste on his property.

•In a deal the government of the West African country of Benin signed with France, Benin gets an advance cash payment of $1.6 million and 30 years of development aid in return for accepting hazardous waste, including radioactive waste.

Often masked as the exportation of "valuable goods," large amounts of discarded computers, mobile phones and other electronic junk, as well as old cars and refrigerators are sent to Africa - all filled with hazardous substances, some of which are highly toxic, including oil, fire retardants, dioxins and PCBs.

A toxic-waste incident of frightening proportions could already be in the making in war-torn Somalia on Africa's eastern coast. The December 2004 tsunami also reached Somalia's sandy coast, where it claimed about 300 lives. German aid organization Caritas provided humanitarian aid through its Somali partner organization, especially to the Somali fishermen affected by the giant wave.

Somalis took the Caritas aid workers to the beach to show them a strange discovery. The tsunami had exposed large tanks in the sediment off the country's flat coast and pushed them ashore. The unlabeled containers of unknown origin are carefully welded shut. By knocking on the tanks, the workers discovered that they contained liquid.

Caritas hired Andreas Bernstorff, the former head of Greenpeace, to travel to Somalia, where he provided the local workers with protective suits. Initial plans to fill the tanks' presumably toxic contents into other containers were abandoned. Instead, the workers temporarily encased the mysterious containers in fiberglass mats.

Citing "security reasons" stemming from Somalia's civil war, UNEP declined to conduct an investigation. It is known that large shipments of toxic waste, especially from Italy and Switzerland, were taken to Somalia in the 1980s and may have been dumped off the coast. The matter can only be resolved by professionally drilling into the thick-walled tanks under stringent safety precautions. Nevertheless, any new information the tests could yield is unlikely to produce significant consequences after so many years.

But the Probo Koala case, on the other hand, has generated political pressure in the Netherlands, especially against Pieter van Geel, the Dutch State Secretary for the Environment, whose inspectors had certified the black sludge as relatively harmless "ship waste." Under the current plan, Abidjan's toxic waste will be recovered and burned in a French hazardous waste treatment facility.

Dutch investigators are not unfamiliar with oil trading company Trafigura, which was presumably behind the scandal. A court in Texas ordered the company, established in 1993, to pay penalties and repay profits of close to $20 million for breaking US laws and violating the embargo provisions of the "Oil for Food" program in Iraq.

A UN investigative commission also believes that Trafigura paid large sums of money to the son of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Kojo.

In the current case, the company insists "the cargo was properly disposed of." Nevertheless, say company spokesmen, Trafigura is "concerned" over "residue from the petrol cargo" in the Ivory Coast.

MR1 expression data on varied cancer cells is more informative. The graph shows positivity in normal fibroblasts. Would they be attacked? Could any therapeutic modalities based on MR1 T cell recognition result in GVHD?

This “potential therapy” is in it’s infancy. And frankly I have been underwhelmed by performance of immunotherapy as cancer treatment generally.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Friday announced the first director of a new office within the House to establish best practices for lawmakers to receive confidential information from whistleblowers about government wrongdoing.

The foreign ministers of the Vatican and China have met on Friday in what is believed to be the highest-level official encounter between the two sides in decades.

The meeting between Archbishop Paul Gallagher and Wang Yi, previously unthinkable, took place on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. The Vatican and China have not had diplomatic relations since the 1950s.

"This is a continuation of the exchanges between China and the Vatican for a period of time. It will open up more space for future exchanges between the two sides," he said.

Friday's meeting was the latest in a "series of signs" of improving relations in recent weeks.

Last month, the pope praised what he called China's "great commitment" to contain the coronavirus outbreak and later the Vatican's charity arm sent hundreds of thousands of medical masks to China as a gesture of goodwill.

If they resume full relations, the Vatican would have to sever relations with Taiwan, which Beijing considers a wayward province. The Vatican is the only state in Europe to still recognise Taipei.

On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged foreign nations to completely cut ties with Chinese telecom giant Huawei. At a security conference in Germany, Pelosi stated that choosing to do business with the company is essentially choosing autocracy over democracy.

Pelosi noted that Huawei is becoming more dangerous than ever as it builds its 5G network, which could bring in new business partners. She encouraged the international community to come together to create alternatives to the company.

“If you want to build a collective conscience of values and respect for human rights, don’t go Huawei,” she said. “Instead, let’s internationalize, build something together that will be about freedom of information.”

On Thursday, the U.S. filed new charges against Huawei, including the company’s alleged theft of trade secrets from U.S.-based companies.

Officials said the company’s successful efforts to steal trade secrets and technology gave it a “significant and unfair competitive advantage.” This comes just days after officials said Huawei has covert access to mobile phone networks.

Man visited by police at work over 'transphobic' tweet hails High Court victory against force

A man visited at work by police over alleged “transphobic” tweets has hailed a ‘watershed moment for liberty” after winning a High Court battle against a force.

Former police officer and businessman Harry Miller, 54, who founded the campaign group Fair Cop, said the police’s actions had a “substantial chilling effect” on his right to free speech.

Miller, from Lincolnshire, claims an officer who visited his workplace told him that he had not committed a crime, but that his tweeting was being recorded as a “hate incident”.

On Friday, the High Court in London ruled Humberside Police unlawfully interfered with his right to freedom of expression.

Mr Justice Julian Knowles said: “I find the combination of the police visiting the claimant’s place of work, and their subsequent statements in relation to the possibility of prosecution, were a disproportionate interference with the claimant’s right to freedom of expression because of their potential chilling effect.”

The judge added that the effect of the police turning up at Mr Miller’s place of work “because of his political opinions must not be underestimated”.

He continued: “To do so would be to undervalue a cardinal democratic freedom. In this country we have never had a Cheka, a Gestapo or a Stasi. We have never lived in an Orwellian society.”

Speaking outside the Royal Courts of Justice after the ruling, Miller said: “Mr Justice Knowles was very clear – we have never had a Gestapo or a Stasi in Great Britain.

“Well, the actions of Humberside Police came way too close for comfort. This is a watershed moment for liberty: the police were wrong to visit my workplace, wrong to ‘check my thinking’.”

Humberside Police said in a statement: “We accept the judge’s decision today and his findings in the judicial review.

Philippines' Duterte says Trump deserves to be re-elected

MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Saturday that Donald Trump deserved to be re-elected, praising the U.S. president’s reaction to his decision to end a decades-old military agreement with the United States.

Trump said on Wednesday he did not mind Duterte’s decision to end the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) even as his defence secretary, Mark Esper, called the move “unfortunate” as Washington and its allies press China to abide by “international rules” in Asia.

“It is President Trump’s circumspect and judicious reaction to the termination of the VFA that made President Duterte give the following remarks: ‘President Trump is a good president and he deserves to be re-elected’,” presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

The VFA is important to the overall U.S.-Philippines alliance and sets out rules for U.S. soldiers operating in the Philippines, a former U.S. territory.

Washington has described the relationship between the two countries as “iron-clad,” despite Duterte’s complaints that include allegations of U.S. hypocrisy and ill-treatment.

Trump has frequently expressed a desire to bring U.S. military forces home from decades-long deployments abroad and has strong-armed some allies into paying more for the right to U.S. defence.

Trump has said that the United States helped the Philippines defeat Islamic State militants.

In his comments about the VFA on Wednesday, Trump added that he had “a very good” relationship with Duterte.

Duterte’s decision, sparked by the revocation of a U.S. visa held by a former police chief who led his bloody war on drugs, could complicate U.S. military interests in the Asia-Pacific region as China’s ambitions rise.

The firebrand leader, who favours closer ties with China and Russia, has said it was time for the Philippines to be militarily independent.

Some Philippine lawmakers hope the VFA can be saved in the 180 days before the termination takes effect, and expressed concern that without it, two other U.S. military agreements will become useless.

Andrew McCabe Responds To DOJ Dropping Criminal Investigation Into His Lying

On Friday, the Department of Justice announced that it was dropping the criminal investigation in ex-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

McCabe had been criminally referred for investigation by the DOJ’s Inspector General (IG) after he lied to the FBI regarding leaks to the Wall Street Journal about the ongoing investigation into whether the 2016 Trump campaign colluded with Russia to steal the election. A special counsel determined that no member of the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to steal the election.

In response to the DOJ dropping the investigation and charges against McCabe, the former FBI official turned to his new employer, CNN, to give a tone-deaf victory lap.

“As glad as I am that the DOJ and the D.C. attorney’s office finally decided to do the right thing today, it’s an absolute disgrace that they took two years and put my family through this experience for two years before they finally drew the obvious conclusion,” McCabe said.

McCabe, of course, missed the irony of his statement, given the fact that while he was at the FBI, he helped lead a two-year investigation into President Donald Trump and his family before the special counsel drew the obvious conclusion.

In a letter announcing the DOJ was dropping the investigation, J.P. Cooney, head of the DOJ’s Fraud & Public Corruption Section and Molly Gaston, assistant U.S. attorney, the department declared the matter “closed”:

We write to inform you that, after careful consideration, the Government has decided not to pursue criminal charges against your client, Andrew G. McCabe, arising from the referral by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) to our Office of conduct described in OIG’s April 13, 2018, report entitled, “A Report of Investigation of Certain Allegations Relating to Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.” Based on the totality of the circumstances and all of the information known to the Government at this time, we consider the matter closed. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

McCabe was demoted in January 2018. One month later, the IG determined that McCabe “lacked candor, including under oath, on multiple occasions in connection with describing his role in connection with a disclosure to the [Wall Street Journal].” He also violated FBI and DOJ policy by disclosing “the existence of an ongoing investigation in the manner described in this report.”

As The Daily Wire previously reported, McCabe filed a lawsuit in August 2019 against the DOJ, claiming his firing was a “politically motivated and retaliatory demotion.” He also claimed that Trump “purposefully and intentionally” pressured the DOJ to fire McCabe in an attempt to discredit the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election.

Having the charges dropped against McCabe angered Trump supporters who have seen time and time again the people who targeted Trump from before he was even president get away scot free with lying to the FBI while people associated with Trump get sentenced to prison. While McCabe was let off the hook for documented lies, Gen. Michael Flynn and Roger Stone were convicted in part for allegedly lying to FBI officials.

The World Bank loses another chief economist

WHEN AUTOCRATIC, oil-rich nations enjoy a windfall from higher crude prices, where does the money go? One place to look is Swiss bank accounts. Sure enough, an increase in oil prices is followed by a spike in deposits held by these countries in financial havens, according to a 2017 paper by Jorgen Juel Andersen of BI Norwegian Business School, Niels Johannesen of the University of Copenhagen and their co-authors.

When Mr Johannesen presented this result at the World Bank in 2015, the audience included Bob Rijkers, a member of the bank’s research group. The two of them joined forces with Mr Andersen to investigate if something similar happened after another kind of windfall: infusions of aid from foreign donors. Their conclusion was dispiriting. World Bank payouts to 22 aid-dependent countries during 1990-2010 were followed by a jump in their deposits in foreign financial havens. The leaks averaged about 5% of the bank’s aid to these countries.

Mr Rijkers is part of a unit that reports to the bank’s chief economist, Pinelopi (Penny) Goldberg. The team publishes working papers on the understanding that their views do not represent the bank’s. But Mr Rijkers’s collaborative effort, which was leaked to The Economist, is not yet among them. It passed an exacting internal review by other researchers in November. But, according to informed sources, publication was blocked by higher officials. They may have been worried about how it would look if the bank’s own researchers said that a chunk of its aid ended up in Swiss bank accounts and the like.

The bank insists a final decision on publication has not been made and that it still has legitimate concerns about the paper. A correlation between aid disbursements and offshore deposits is not proof of causation. And the 5% of “leaks” might include some innocent money, earned by aid contractors who just happen to prefer offshore havens to other financial centres. But the paper had already answered similar objections in the review process.

The integrity of the bank’s research is meant to be safeguarded by its chief economist. The position is typically filled by a well-regarded academic, who has both an external reputation to protect and the internal clout to defend their turf. The job was, however, split in 2017 when Paul Romer, a star economist with little managerial finesse, was relieved of his bureaucratic duties. (He then left the job altogether after only 15 months in the role.) Ms Goldberg was given more managerial power than Mr Romer ended up with, but less than he started with.

This month she said she would be returning to Yale in March, after only 15 months in the job. Her reasons were unclear. A reorganisation of the bank may have been a factor, including the imminent arrival of Mari Pangestu, who will assume oversight of Ms Goldberg’s unit, in an effort to align research more closely with the bank’s country operations. Ms Goldberg may have come to feel that the position carried too much of a managerial burden, but too little power to rule her fief.

But it is also possible that the bank’s decision to block one of her team’s papers grated on her. After aid to a country spikes, money departs for offshore havens. And after a sensitive paper is spiked, Penny departs for New Haven. In both cases, correlation is easier to prove than causation.

New Belgian government formation: Justice minister throws in the towel

Federal justice minister Koen Geens, the latest politician to sound out the political parties on the creation of a new federal government, yesterday handed in his resignation to the King.

Geens was due to go to the palace at 18.00 on Friday evening, and took the surprising step of asking the king to be relieved of the mandate he was given two weeks ago. The king accepted, and will himself begin talks with the main political parties on Monday.

Geens remains in his post as justice minister in the caretaker government.

“My plans were crossed by the declarations of one party,” he explained on leaving the palace. “A definitive veto was announced against the N-VA.”

The pro-life party in Spain accused the ruling socialists of promoting euthanasia to eliminate 'people who are expensive at the end of their lives.'

On Friday we also learned the conduct at the Obama FBI under James Comey, Lisa Page, Peter Strzok, Andrew McCabe and others was much worse than we thought.

Last night author Lee Smith joined Jason Chaffetz on The Ingraham Angle on Friday night to discuss the latest developments in the Spygate scandal.

The more we learn – the more corruption is revealed at the top levels of the Obama intelligence community.

On Friday Eric Felton at Real Clear Investigations observed: “Buried in IG Report: How an FBI Team in Rome Gave Steele Highly Guarded Secrets.”

Felton points to a meeting in Rome a month before the 2016 election:

A month before the 2016 presidential election, the FBI met Christopher Steele in Rome and apparently unlawfully shared with the foreign opposition researcher some of the bureau’s most closely held secrets, according to unpublicized disclosures in the recent Justice Department Inspector General report on abuses of federal surveillance powers.

What’s more, Steele, the former British spy who compiled the “dossier” of conspiracy theories for the Hillary Clinton campaign, was promised $15,000 to attend the briefing by FBI agents eager to maintain his cooperation in their Trump-Russia collusion investigation codenamed Crossfire Hurricane.

That investigation was so closely guarded that only a handful of top officials and agents at the FBI were allowed to know about it.

The report by Inspector General Michael Horowitz details how a team of FBI agents in early October 2016 shared with Steele extensive classified materials, just weeks before the bureau cut off ties with him for leaking his own research to the media. The secrets included foreign intelligence information still considered so sensitive that the IG’s report refers to it even now only as coming from a “Friendly Foreign Government.” In fact, this is a reference to Australia. That country’s ambassador to Britain sent the United States a tip about loose talk by junior Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos. The FBI has described that as the predicate for its Trump-Russia investigation.

The IG report also discloses that FBI agents knew Steele worked for Glenn Simpson, whose opposition research firm Fusion GPS was paying Steele to dig up dirt on Trump for the Clinton campaign, and that Steele informed the FBI that the “candidate” – Clinton herself – knew about Steele’s work.

According to Lee Smith, the information sharing between the Clinton campaign and the DOJ-FBI was much more extensive than previously reported.

Author Lee Smith: We have known for a long time, of course, that Steele and the Clinton Campaign was providing information to the FBI. It now appears the FBI was giving information to the Clinton campaign, as well. Was that in order to direct the FISA so that they could obtain the spy warrant?… People involved who were sharing this information with Steele including Peter Strzok and Bill Priestap.

The Tuesday arrest of Giulio Occhionero and his sister, Francesca Maria, has brought to light what appears to be the biggest, and highest-profile, hacking of institutional and corporate accounts ever reported in Italy.

The siblings have been planting the Pyramid Eye remote access Trojan on computers using a spear-phishing technique over several years, according to the arrest order.

They attacked at least 18,000 high-profile targets, including former Prime Ministers Matteo Renzi and Mario Monti, President of European Central Bank Mario Draghi, as well as employees and heads of various ministries including Internal Affairs, Treasury, Finance and Education.

But Giulio Occhionero claimed that he and his sister, Francesca Maria, were set up. A piece reported by Frederico Punzi, writing in The Atlantico, notes their denials and more:

MUNICH (Reuters) - Online content should be regulated with a system somewhere between the existing rules used for the telecoms and media industries, Facebook (FB.O) CEO Mark Zuckerberg told global leaders and security chiefs on Saturday.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, Zuckerberg said Facebook had improved its work countering online election interference, and expanded on his previous calls for regulation of social media firms.

“I do think that there should be regulation on harmful content ... there’s a question about which framework you use for this,” Zuckerberg said during a question and answer session.

“Right now there are two frameworks that I think people have for existing industries - there’s like newspapers and existing media, and then there’s the telco-type model, which is ‘the data just flows through you’, but you’re not going to hold a telco responsible if someone says something harmful on a phone line.”

“I actually think where we should be is somewhere in between,” he said.

Facebook and social media giants including Twitter (TWTR.N) and Alphabet’s Google (GOOGL.O) have come under increasing pressure to better combat governments and political groups using their platforms to spread false and misleading information.

Zuckerberg said he now employed 35,000 people to review online content and implement security measures.

Those teams and Facebook’s automated technology currently suspend more than 1 million fake accounts each day, he said, adding that “the vast majority are detected within minutes of signing up.”

“Our budget is bigger today than the whole revenue of the company when we went public in 2012, when we had a billion users,” he said.

“I’m proud of the results but we will definitely have to stay vigilant.”

'There is not going to be a more convenient revolution'

The donkey has long been the symbol of the Democratic Party since President Andrew Jackson embraced his detractors labeling him "a jackass" in 1828, but a Democratic Senate candidate in Maine may have a rebrand in mind.

Bre Kidman unveiled a new campaign logo last week: a guillitone, the execution apparatus commonly associated with the French Revolution that was used for the beheadings of King Louis XVI and his wife, Queen Marie Antoinette. But fear not, Kidman, who hopes to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November, says using an image of the deadly device in campaign materials is not meant to be taken literally.

"We're not going to start a guillotine in Monument Square (in Portland) and start beheading people," Kidman clarified to the Portland Press-Herald. "It's a symbol of the work we have to do to overcome flaws in our system – flaws that have become deeply evident in the last few weeks."

'Reign of Terror'

The self-described democratic socialist, who identifies as non-binary, added that printing the French Reign of Terror execution device on campaign t-shirts is meant to symbolize ongoing class struggles that may inevitably lead to a violent overthrow of the federal government.

"A guillotine t-shirt reminds others about it in hopes that we'll all be motivated to address the very serious problems with our government before a similarly violent uprising becomes inevitable," said Kidman, who recently endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders for president, on Twitter.

The Maine Democrat unveiled the campaign merchandise shortly after the Senate acquitted President Donald Trump in his impeachment trial.

"More details on how to get your GuilloTee tomorrow! In the meantime, remember: there is not going to be a more convenient revolution," Kidman added.

In a separate tweet, Kidman clarified the intent is only to symbolically behead Republicans and money in politics.

"The guillotine is for the plutocratic & kleptocratic norms that have undermined our democratic process. We have to develop ways to subvert the stranglehold of wealth on our government," Kidman said.

Bernie Bros, Guillotines and Gulags

As TheBlaze's Aaron Coleman reported last month, Kidman's use of the guillotine as a campaign symbol is not the first time that democratic socialists invoke violent imagery. In an undercover video taken by Project Veritas, a campaign staffer named Kyle Jurek argued that if Sanders were to win in November, Trump voters will be subject to "reeducation" in Soviet-style gulags.

"In Nazi Germany after the fall of the Nazi party there was a sh*t ton of the populace that was f**king Nazi-fied. Germany had to spend billions of dollars to reeducate their people to not be Nazis. We're probably going to have to do the same fking thing here," Jurek said.

"That's kind of what Bernie's whole free education for everybody...because we're going to have to teach you to not be a f**king Nazi," he added. "There's a reason Josef Stalin had gulags. And actually, gulags were a lot better than what the CIA has told us that they were. Like, people were actually paid a living wage in gulags, they had conjugal visits in gulags. Gulags were actually meant for, like, reeducation."

U.S. Embassy: Americans aboard quarantined ship to fly home

The U.S. Embassy in Japan said Americans aboard a quarantined cruise ship will be flown back home on a chartered flight Sunday.

About 380 Americans are aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which has docked at Yokohama, a port city southwest of Tokyo.

The aircraft will arrive in Japan late Sunday, and people will be flown to Travis Air Force Base in California, with some passengers continuing to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, the embassy said in a letter to passengers and crew, posted online Saturday.

After arriving in the United States, all will need to go through another two weeks of quarantine, the letter said.

Everyone will get a checkup before being allowed on the chartered flight, and those who show symptoms of sickness will not be permitted to board the plane, the embassy said.

Dems Looking to Steal Wisconsin Supreme Court Seat Next Week in Non-Partisan Primary

Next Tuesday is critical primary election for a State Supreme Court Justice in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Democrats’ are hoping to attempt at a silent coup of the state courts.

If successful, this will firm up their plans to seize control over the court over the next decade with national consequences for this laboratory of leftist judicial tyranny.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court primary election on Tuesday, February 18, decides which two of three candidates will be on the general ballot for a ten-year term. The court currently has a 5-2 conservative majority, and what’s at stake in the near-term is who replaces Governor Scott Walker’s appointment of Daniel Kelly.

The left-controlled media have failed to alert everyday Wisconsinites about the importance of Tuesday’s election, and many conservatives may stay home without realizing their state is about to be overtaken by a Marxist judiciary.

Kelly, appointed by Governor Walker in 2016 and considered to be a conservative, replaced David Prosser. Placing Justice Kelly on the Supreme Court was perhaps the most consequential thing Governor Walker did to assure a conservative majority on the bench.

Kelly faces two teachers’ union-supported “progressives” who, along with those arranging this setup behind the scenes, are trying to quietly push Kelly off the ballot and reduce the court’s conservative majority.

The consequences are grave for Wisconsin and for the nation if Kelly does not proceed through this primary election and win the general in April 2020. Wisconsin has already been a choice location for the left to experiment with a national strategy to chill noncompliant everyday citizens’ free speech through their control of state courts.

Wisconsin’s courts were the means through which a national push to terrorize conservatives came to fruition in the John Doe investigations, which were described as “the most tumultuous political events in Wisconsin in generations—perhaps in history.” In the John Doe investigations, retribution against Republican Governor Scott Walker was exacted by leftist operatives in the state government against ordinary Wisconsin citizens.

It was the Wisconsin Supreme Court that halted the unconstitutional persecutions of conservatives in a 2015 4-2 decision. The court declared the First Amendment rights of the victims had been violated.

With the 2018 election of far-left zealot and former teacher Governor Tony Evers, the left’s appetite to return to such political warfare through the courts has been whetted anew.

Andrew visited Nygard at his lavish estate in 2000, after the Canadian fashion designer had agreed out-of-court settlements with three employees who accused him of sexual harassment.

The prince and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson stayed at Nygard Cay, near Nassau, with daughters Beatrice and Eugenie.

The new case threatens further embarrassment for Andrew, who stepped back from public life last year following a backlash over his relationship with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

According to a 99-page lawsuit filed against him in New York, Nygard used his ten-bedroom mansion to host 'pamper parties' for teenage girls recruited at shopping malls and fashion events.

He and his employees told the girls they could be fashion models, but then plied them with wine and drugs before Nygard allegedly raped them.

Three alleged victims were 14-year-old virgins and said they felt scared and humiliated by the attacks, which left one needing medical treatment.

The case has been brought on behalf of ten women who allege they were raped by Nygard.

Eight were teenage girls and two were adult employees on the Nassau estate.

Lawyers said Nygard, who is worth an estimated £690million, ran a 'decades-long sex trafficking scheme' that destroyed innocent lives.

They said he used his company's private jet, dubbed 'N-Force', to take his victims with him on visits to London, Germany, Italy and China, and treated them as his 'personal servants'.

Iraqi officials told US prepared to discuss withdrawal

In January, the Iraqi parliament voted 170-0 for the government to seek a full pullout of all foreign troops. President Trump reacted with threats, and while Iraq’s former PM had backed away, the matter of US presence is still an issue. But weeks later, things may be changing.

Over the past week, the Pentagon has talked with senior Iraqi officials, telling them they are prepared to discuss withdrawal in some form. The US has even offered a plan for a partial pullback of troops from some parts of Iraq.

The position right now is that the US is willing to leave certain Shi’ite majority areas, and cut down the number of troops in Baghdad. The US had ruled out leaving Ayn al-Assad air base, calling that a “red line.”

That is a major shift, as previously the US position was that they would not consider any specific cuts, and rather would engage in wholesale renegotiation of all US-Iraqi ties going forward.

According to reports, Netflix scrapped the Corey Feldman documentary and deemed it “too dangerous.” Now Feldman has went another avenue to release his documentary on his rape allegations in Hollywood.

Actor Corey Feldman has announced that he will be naming Hollywood pedophiles in an upcoming live stream documentary about his experience as a child actor.

Feldman will also address the alleged abuse late actor Corey Haim suffered at the hands of the same purported pedophiles.

The actor released the trailer for the documentary — “(My) Truth: The Rape of 2 Coreys” — on Tuesday.

Censorship Is the Way that Any Dictatorship — and NO Democracy — Functions

No democracy can survive censorship. If there is censorship, then each individual cannot make his/her own decisions (voting decisions or otherwise) on the basis of truth but only on the basis of whatever passes through the censor’s filter, which is always whatever supports the censoring regime and implants it evermore deeply into the public’s mind — regardless of its actual truthfulness.

The public does have a mind, as a collective constituting the majority of the residents in the given land, which majority rules any democratic government. If the government doesn’t really represent the majority, it’s no democracy, at all, but instead represents other individuals, the real rulers, who might be hidden. Consequently, if a democracy exists but a censor somehow becomes allowed, and emerges into existence in a given land, then democracy will inevitably be snuffed-out there, and dictatorship will inevitably be the result — merely because censorship has been applied there, which blocks some essential truths (truths that the rulers don’t want the public to know) from reaching the public.

Nothing is as toxic to democracy as is censorship. Censorship prevents democracy.

If a dictatorship already exists in a given land, then it does so by means of censorship, because only by that means will the public be willing to pay taxes to the regime and to go to war for it and to kill and die for it. Without censorship, none of that could happen, except in an authentic democracy. An authentic democracy has no censorship.

This is why democracy is so rare. Almost every dictatorship calls itself a ‘democracy’. But a government which calls itself “democratic” isn’t necessarily democratic, but more likely it has simply fooled its public to think that it is one (such as the United States has by now been scientifically proven to be — an actual dictatorship).

Anyone who endorses censorship is a totalitarian, a supporter of totalitarianism, even without recognizing the fact. If the person fails to recognize the fact that censorship is applied only in a totalitarian regime, then that person has bought into the most basic belief of totalitarianism: the idea that censorship can be justified in some circumstances. Dictatorships always pump that lie, so as to be able to continue to exist as a dictatorship. There is no circumstance which ever can justify censorship, unless one believes that dictatorship is, or can be, good instead of bad.

If you think that some censorship is good, then you have bought into the fundamental belief that is promulgated in any dictatorship. It’s a lie, but it fools the majority of people, in a dictatorship.

No writing, nor any other statement, should ever be censored, no matter how vile it is. Indeed, if it is vile, then it needs to be exposed, not hidden; because, if it is hidden, then it will fester until it grows in the dark and finally becomes sprung upon a public who have never been inoculated against it by truth, and therefore the false belief becomes actually seriously dangerous and likely to spread like wildfire, because it had been censored before it became public. The most deadly infections are those that grow in the dark and then become released upon a population who have no pre-existing protection against it.

Adjutants General Ignore OSD & Lobby Congress For Space Guard

PENTAGON: Frustrated with the slow pace of decision-making on the issue, National Guard leaders in states with space units are openly advocating in Congress for the creation of a Space Force National Guard.

“As the adjutants general, we are individually approaching our congressional delegations,” Maj. Gen. David Baldwin, adjutant general of California, told reporters at a briefing today. “We are strongly advocating for a Space National Guard, and we are being received very well by the members on the Hill.”

Baldwin’s counterpart from Colorado, Maj. Gen. Mike Loh, said the question of a Space Force Guard and Reserve component was left up in the air in its first report on Space Force organization to Congress delivered Feb. 3 by Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett. Guard leaders were expecting a positive decision to be reflected in that report: “That’s why,” he said, “I’m concerned.”

Guard leaders argue that a Space National Guard is required to keep the roughly 1,500 guardsmen who specialize in space operations for the Army and Air National Guard aligned with their active duty counterparts. If those personnel remain in their current chain of command, there could be future disconnect in training and equipment being used by active duty and guard troops.

A preliminary agreement from the city has been made to pay Detective Jarret Lemiux $950,000 and another $1.4million to Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Rosenfeld.

Both were targeted by ex-Assistant District Attorney Tara Lenich.

Another $3.2million will go to 350 plaintiffs who filed a class-action lawsuit against Lenich and the Brooklyn DA's Office, arguing that their privacy was invaded in the woman's scheme.

'This individual clearly abused the authority entrusted to her as a prosecutor. She illegally used her tools and training for personal gain instead of furthering the interests of the public, and cleverly concealed her scheme,' Nicholas Paolucci, a spokesman for the city Law Department, explained to the New York Daily News.

Not exactly surprising, but late last night ABC released the transcript of the Bill Barr interview. A review of the transcript compared to the broadcast shows there was significant interview material left on the editing floor.

—Approximately two-thirds of the interview was never broadcast. Additionally, major sections of answers were completely cut out (chopped up/edited) after the question(s) was/were asked.
