Archives on controversial war-time Pope Pius XII set to open

The Vatican's archives on Pope Pius XII are poised to be unsealed, with historians hoping to uncover previously hidden details about one of the most controversial popes in history.

The papacy of Pius XII lasted from 1939 to 1958, tumultuous years that covered World War II, including the Holocaust. Pius XII remains a controversial figure as he never publicly condemned the Nazi regime.

"The opening of the archives is decisive for the contemporary history of the church and the world," Cardinal Jose Tolentino Calaca de Mendonca, the church's archivist and librarian, told reporters on Thursday.

When the archives are unsealed on March 2, researchers will be able to delve into a wide variety of topics.

"From religious history to political history, from the government of the church to the relations of the Holy See with states and the international community," said the cardinal.

The controversy over Pius XII hinges on whether the head of the Catholic Church, a former diplomat of the Holy See in Germany, remained too silent during the Holocaust, never publicly condemning the Nazis.

Critics of the late pope argue that with his considerable moral authority, speaking out against the Nazis could have influenced German catholics away from the regime.

Supporters counter that any criticisms uttered by him could have endangered catholics throughout Europe.

The controversy has given rise to dozens of books, including bestsellers like 1999's "Hitler's Pope," by John Cornwell.

One hundred and fifty researchers from around the world have already requested access to the archives, said Bishop Sergio Pagano, who heads the Vatican's central "apostolic archives."

First to be served will be those from the American Holocaust Memorial Museum and representatives of the Jewish community in Rome, he said. Researchers will compete all year long for about 20 places available in the central archives.

This Man From Alabama is in Prison For Life For Stealing $9 in 1982

Escambia County, AL — Willie Simmons, a 62-year old Black man from Alabama, has been behind bars for the last 38 years for stealing $9. He was convicted of 1st-degree robbery and was sentenced to life without parole in 1982 due to Alabama’s Habitual Offender law. He already had 3 prior convictions.

Beth Shelburne, a reporter from WBRC, shared Simmons’ ordeals in a thread on Twitter after having a conversation with him.

Shelburne said Simmons, an Army veteran who became addicted to drugs while assigned overseas, was 25-years old when the state “said he should die in prison.” Since 2005, he hasn’t had a visitor after his sister passed away.

Now at the age of 62, he has been incarcerated in Holman Correctional Facility in Escambia County, Alabama which is considered one of the “most violent prisons in the country.” Despite that, he is studying for his GED, trying to “stay away from the wild bunch.”

Simmons is not denying the crime he committed that landed him in prison for life. He admitted he was “high on drugs” when he wrestled a man to the ground and stole his wallet that contained $9, as he said he was “trying to get a quick fix.”

But Maxwell, 58, friend and confidante of convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, may come to regret her lack of inhibition. For I can disclose that the spirited Oxenberg has alerted the FBI that she is willing to testify against her old acquaintance.

Following her approach, she was called by a detective. 'He said he had reviewed my comments and wanted to follow up,' says Christina.

The FBI's interest was understandable. Oxenberg's information included details of a conversation with Maxwell in 1997 in the latter's living room.

'Never forget it. We were alone. She said many things. All creepy. Unorthodox. Strange. I could not believe whatever she was saying was real. Stuff like: 'Jeffrey and I have everyone on videotape!'

The FBI agent asked if Christina would be willing to testify. 'I said of course I would.'

Oxenberg, sister of Dynasty actress Catherine, explains that she wants to achieve justice for those who were abused by Epstein.

'Nothing will heal the trauma. These women are affected for their whole lives, but at the very least they should have money.' The money in question, she adds, is not just the fortune amassed by billionaire Epstein, but also from Maxwell.

'She definitely has millions,' says Oxenberg, who is publishing her memoir, Secrets, via the website Patreon.

'She wanted to marry him. She didn't, but she got a lot of money. Cash and assets. All blood money.'

Soros, worth an estimated $8.3 billion according to Forbes, is not the first billionaire to lay down money in the race. Conway’s campaign coffers have been bolstered by donations from his dad.

A political action committee founded by liberal billionaire philanthropist — and Donald Trump nemesis — George Soros kicked $2 million to a committee supporting Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx in her re-election bid against three Democratic primary challengers.

A mega donor to Democrats and liberal causes, the hedge fund operator’s Democracy PAC transferred $2 million into the Illinois Justice and Public Safety PAC on Wednesday.

The justice and public safety PAC has so far spent $571,359.30 on mail, media and website production costs opposing Bill Conway, one of Foxx’s primary challengers.

Soros, worth an estimated $8.3 billion according to Forbes, is not the first billionaire to lay down money in the race.

Conway’s campaign coffers have been bolstered by donations from his dad, William E. Conway Jr., one of the founders of the private equity firm the Carlyle Group. More than 88% of the challenger’s total warchest came from his dad, the Sun-Times found last month.

The senior Conway has a net worth of $3.5 billion, according to Forbes.

A spokeswoman for Foxx said the campaign is “not coordinating with anyone related to Soros” or with the justice and public safety committee.

That committee, which also says its goal is to oppose Conway, was created by Whitney Tymas, who also created a 2016 committee called Illinois Safety and Justice, according to a Crain’s report on the committee.

Soros, 89, is the founder of Soros Fund Management LLC. He’s donated more than $32 billion to his Open Society Foundations, which funds democracy and human rights projects in more than 100 nations, according to his web site.

Soros was a big Hillary Clinton backer and has called Trump “a conman and the ultimate narcissist” and said his “politics are a malignant disease.”

He’s also a favorite target of Republicans and the far right. Trump supporters frequently try to tie Soros to a variety of conspiracies.

Besides Foxx and Bill Conway, Democrats running for state’s attorney include former Ald. Bob Fioretti and former prosecutor Donna More. Two Republicans are also running: Pat O’Brien, a former Cook County circuit judge, and Christopher Pfannkuche, who ran against Foxx in 2016.

Authorities are investigating after a family was killed in an apparent murder-suicide in Orange County, Florida.

Officials said they were called to a home around 3 p.m. for a well-being check on a family who had not been seen in weeks.

When officials arrived, they found a man, woman, and two juvenile boys in the home dead. Officials said one boy was high school-aged, while another one was middle school-aged.

Officials said all four had been shot."

Sheriff John Mina said they discovered through a preliminary investigation that the man shot the three family members and then himself.

Authorities did not release further information on the family, but did say the man was a Customs and Border Patrol agent at the Orlando International Airport.

DEA Announces Launch of Operation Crystal Shield

Efforts will Focus on Main U.S. Methamphetamine Trafficking Transportation Hubs

Attorney General William P. Barr and Drug Enforcement Administration Acting Administrator Uttam Dhillon today announced that the DEA will direct enforcement resources to methamphetamine “transportation hubs” — areas where methamphetamine is often trafficked in bulk and then distributed across the country. While continuing to focus on stopping drugs being smuggled across the border, DEA’s Operation Crystal Shield will ramp up enforcement to block their further distribution into America’s neighborhoods.

DEA has identified eight major methamphetamine transportation hubs where these efforts will be concentrated: Atlanta, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Phoenix, and St. Louis. Together, these DEA Field Divisions accounted for more than 75 percent of methamphetamine seized in the U.S. in 2019.

“While meth is not a new drug, it has seen a troubling resurgence over the past few years,” said Attorney General William P. Barr. “Manufactured mostly in Mexican labs and smuggled into the United States across the southwest border, meth is a drug that is both cheap and potent, creating a deadly combination. Just as the Trump Administration has acted swiftly to stem the tide of opioid fatalities, it will use every weapon in its arsenal – such as the DEA’s Operation Crystal Shield - to stop dangerous methamphetamine from reaching American neighborhoods and harming American families.”

Operation Crystal Shield builds on existing DEA initiatives that target major drug trafficking networks, including the Mexican cartels that are responsible for the overwhelming majority of methamphetamine trafficked into and within the United States. From FY 2017 to FY 2019, DEA domestic seizures of methamphetamine increased 127 percent from 49,507 pounds to 112,146 pounds. During the same time frame, the number of DEA arrests related to methamphetamine rose nearly twenty percent.

“For decades, methamphetamine has been a leading cause of violence and addiction – a drug threat that has never gone away,” said Acting Administrator Dhillon. “With a 22 percent increase in methamphetamine-related overdose deaths, now is the time to act, and DEA is leading the way with a surge of interdiction efforts and resources, targeting regional transportation hubs throughout the United States. By reducing the supply of meth, we reduce the violence, addiction, and death it spreads.”

Virtually all methamphetamine in the United States comes through major ports of entry along the Southwest Border and is transported by tractor trailers and personal vehicles along the nation’s highways to major transfer centers around the country. It is often found in poly-drug loads, alongside cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl.

Texas Couple Sentenced to a Combined 140 Years in Prison for Conspiracy to Produce Child Pornography and Other Crimes Against Children

A husband and wife from Big Spring, Texas, were sentenced today to a combined 140 years in prison for crimes against multiple children.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S Attorney Erin Nealy Cox of the Northern District of Texas and Special Agent in Charge Ryan L. Spradlin of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) made the announcement.

Christopher James Regan, 38, a former shipping logistics manager, was sentenced to 90 years in prison after pleading guilty in October 2019 to conspiracy to produce child pornography and two counts of producing child pornography. Tanya Marie Regan, 35, was sentenced to 50 years in prison after her October 2019 guilty plea to conspiracy to produce child pornography and possession of prepubescent child pornography. The sentences, which were imposed by U.S. District Judge Mark T. Pittman of the Northern District of Texas, also included lifetime terms of supervised release for both defendants.

According to court documents, Christopher and Tanya Regan sexually abused and produced child pornography of multiple children, and they possessed and distributed child pornography to one another as well. The Regans also engaged in graphic discussions about the sexual abuse of children over several online platforms.

In plea papers, the pair admitted that at Christopher Regan’s direction, Tanya Regan repeatedly videotaped herself sexually abusing children for Christopher Regan’s sexual gratification.

When law enforcement seized electronics from the home, several graphic videos had been deleted, but were still stored in the recycle bin or on unallotted space on various SD cards. Undeleted videos were stored in a computer folder titled “userstanya_000picturesprivatevidsminor.”

HSI’s San Angelo, Texas, office, the Howard County Sheriff’s Office and the High Technology Investigative Unit within the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) investigated the case. Substantial assistance was provide by the HSI offices in Lubbock and Tyler, Texas, Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the National Center for Mission and Exploited Children. Trial Attorney Kyle P. Reynolds of CEOS and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ann Howey and Jeffrey R. Haag prosecuted the case along with former Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell H. Lorfing.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. MUNICH — French President Emmanuel Macron sees his country’s nuclear arsenal as a military key to political leadership in the European Union, according to U.S. and European officials.

“We can say that he broke [the] nuclear taboo, to a certain extent, which is a serious thing for societies to remind that there is such a thing like nuclear threats,” Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz told the Washington Examiner in an exclusive interview after the Munich Security Conference. “Everybody knows there are nuclear weapons, but we do not talk about that. You start to talk; you want to show something."

The full scope of Macron’s ambition remains unclear, but he has invoked France’s nuclear weapons repeatedly in the weeks since the United Kingdom left the EU. He returned to that theme on Saturday, touting the value of that arsenal in political disputes with the United States, such as the fissure between Washington and European capitals over the value of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

“We have to create our own capability that bestows credibility on us, so that we can protect ourselves and that we can be able to act,” Macron said during a question-and-answer session at the conference. “If we do not have the ability to act, then in foreign policy, we will not be credible, especially with regards to the United States.”

The French leader offered that exhortation to explain why he believes that “our nuclear forces ... strengthen the security of Europe through their very existence, and they have, in this sense, a truly European dimension,” as he put it in a major Feb. 7 speech.

Macron emphasized to the European assembly that he is offering “to conduct joint exercises” involving France’s nuclear weapons, even though Paris refuses to participate in such exercises with NATO, which relies on the American nuclear arsenal.

“We can … talk about U.S. nuclear assets but not about British or French nuclear assets because it always had to go through the United States,” he said before calling for cooperation with Germany in particular. “I know this debate is not easy in Germany, but I do believe that we have to conduct a calm debate, a level-headed debate, so we can not always have to go through the United States. No. We have to think in a European way as well.”

Berlin's hesitance to yield to Paris the kind of political leadership that would come with dependence on a French nuclear umbrella might undercut Macron's attempt to establish a new "strategic culture" in Europe.

"The German establishment is quite divided in responding to the reality that in the EU, France is today after Brexit the only nuclear power," NATO Deputy Secretary-General Mircea Geoana said during a recent Washington Examiner interview. "I think there is a long, long way between having these capabilities and eventually offering them. But when it comes to NATO, I think the U.S. nuclear deterrence is the only active policy."

Czaputowicz, allowing that “France might contribute to common security,” echoed Geoana.

“From our perspective, of course, transatlantic relations are the only guarantor for our security,” he said, noting that the American arsenal is the only one big enough “to create a real deterrence for the Russians.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday said that the United States has reached an “understanding” with the Taliban on a reduction of violence across Afghanistan, paving the way for a peace agreement between both sides to be signed on February 29.

Pompeo said in a statement early in the morning that, after discussions in Doha, Qatar, U.S. and Taliban representatives “have come to an understanding with the Taliban on a significant and nationwide reduction in violence across Afghanistan.” A deal is expected to be signed if the weeklong agreement to reduce violence holds.
