Cohn: What my favorite way of describing the flu vaccine when you hear things like oh but I don't get the flu or things like that, is to ask patients if they wear their seat belt. And usually the answer is yes and then you ask them if they've been in a serious car accident recently. A California state senator is facing anti-Semitic and homophobic attacks, as well as death threats

California State Sen. Scott Wiener said his Jewish identity has made him a target before, and he pointed to President Trump’s leadership as a factor

This has been a difficult month for Scott Wiener, who represents San Francisco in the California State Senate, and not just because he’s running for reelection.

Wiener has been the target of death threats on social media (“I’ll publicly execute you,” one reads), according to screenshots of posts he shared on Twitter, and says he’s been doxxed, his home address posted online.

He’s been called a pedophile thousands of times — in hashtags, direct messages and comments on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

And because he’s Jewish and gay, Wiener has borne the brunt of unrelenting anti-Semitic and homophobic comments and posts. One that has made the rounds in recent days before being removed from Instagram featured a crudely doctored image showing Wiener with an elongated nose and wearing the garb and hairstyle of an Orthodox Jew.

The barrage is coming from believers in QAnon, the sweeping, false conspiracy theory that Democrats run a pedophile ring that President Donald Trump is secretly battling. Anti-Semitism, including the claim that rich Jews secretly control the world, is a recurring feature of the conspiracy.

The movement has grown in recent months with people spending more time online, its adherents winning nominating contests for public office and Trump declining to condemn it. In one prominent example, a Republican congressional candidate who has embraced the movement, Marjorie Taylor Greene, won her Georgia primary with the eager backing of the president.

“It’s been really extreme and hard,” Wiener told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency on Tuesday about the onslaught he’s experienced. “It’s been pretty consistent. No matter what I post about, there are an enormous number of comments calling me a pedophile, and it’s very disheartening that this is what the country has come to, that we have this cult, QAnon, that is gradually taking over the Republican Party.”

Wiener, 50, a Democrat who was first elected in 2016, said his Jewish identity has made him a target before, and he pointed to Trump’s leadership as a factor.

“In that world, it’s sort of par for the course,” he said. “You attack the Jews, and that’s been unleashed under this president.”

Why is Wiener being called a pedophile?

It’s because he introduced a bill that removes a disparity regarding who has to register as a sex offender.

Under California law, the age of consent is 18. If one has vaginal sex with a minor who is older than 14 and within 10 years of their age, judges have discretion as to whether that person should be registered as a sex offender. So, for example, if a 19-year-old has consensual sex with their 17 1/2-year-old partner, the 19-year-old can be prosecuted — but a judge can decide that the 19-year-old does not have to register as a sex offender.

California law, however, states that adults who are prosecuted for having anal or oral sex with a minor must automatically be registered as a sex offender, no matter the circumstances or what the judge thinks. Effectively, Wiener and his allies say, the current law discriminates against teenage LGBTQ couples. So Wiener’s bill, SB-145, corrects the disparity and leaves the decision to the judge about sex offender status.

The bill, which has passed the State Senate and is awaiting the governor’s signature, does not allow pedophilia.

But its content and author, Wiener, are flypaper to QAnon adherents, who view themselves as part of an imagined global effort to combat sex abuse of children. Opponents are mischaracterizing the measure, falsely saying that it legalizes pedophilia or allows a 24-year-old to rape a 14-year-old without consequences.

Though untrue, the accusations have spread, and mischaracterizations of the bill have been amplified by random social media accounts as well as national figures like Sen. Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican, and Donald Trump Jr.

“Today’s CA Dems believe we need more adults having sex with children, and when they do, they shouldn’t register as sex offenders,” Cruz tweeted on Sept. 3. “This is extreme & very harmful to kids.”

Trump Jr. falsely claimed that California Democrats are “pander[ing] to the wishes of pedophiles and child rapists.”

Locally, meanwhile, opponents of the bill say that making penalties for anal and oral sex equivalent to those for vaginal sex weakens anti-pedophilia measures. Melissa Melendez, a Republican state senator in Southern California, called it “disgusting.”

“SB145 allows adults who have ‘consensual’ sex with a 14 year old to not be charged as sex offenders,” she tweeted on Sept. 4. “It’s a disgusting bill and one that should be promptly vetoed. Call the Governor and tell him to protect kids and veto this bill.”

Wiener says such statements could fan the flames of others who repeat claims like those of Trump Jr. — and then say they want to kill him. He said the vast majority of Republicans in the State Senate have not engaged in such rhetoric, but also that none of those colleagues have stood up for him publicly.

“I wouldn’t expect them to,” he said. “Their party is unfortunately being more and more influenced by QAnon.”

This marks the second time this year that Wiener has been targeted publicly with anti-Semitism. In June, a California trade union posted an ad showing Wiener holding Monopoly money and accusing him of “selling out California.” The ad was later withdrawn.

Wiener, who is not under police protection, said the latest wave of smears has made it harder for him to post on social media — the invective accompanies whatever he posts. One comment said “We need to end jewish zionism and jewish interference in white countries.”

The lawmaker also said he has to be judicious about tagging colleagues because he doesn’t want the abuse to then rain down on them.

The solution, Wiener said, is for social media companies to take a larger role in policing hate speech on their platforms, though he added, “I’m not saying they should be the thought police.” He has no immediate plans to work on legislation to that effect, he said.

In the meantime, Wiener said all he can do is “manage” the hate he receives. While it’s made his life more difficult, he hasn’t given up on politics.

“Politics is hard and there’s a lot of ugliness around it, but with that said, politics is a big part of how we make positive change,” he said. “And so this hasn’t discouraged me at all.”

USA: Talent in ashes in aftermath of Oregon wildfires

With fires burning across the region, many areas in the city of Talent, Oregon, were

left completely burned and destroyed, as shown in the video from Wednesday.

Governor Kate Brown invoked emergency legislation in the State of Oregon,

describing the current situation as "very dangerous."

The raging blaze has led to the evacuation and planned evacuation of thousands in the area.

What accounts for QAnon’s difference? I’m not sure it’s as simple as saying the campaign centers on protecting children. Plenty of far-right conspiracy theorists, such as the neo-Nazi believers in “white genocide,” make similar claims about defending children but cannot point to such gender diversity across their ranks. So what is going on?

As with all things QAnon, it’s difficult to speak definitively. But my own hypothesis is that QAnon’s apparent success with women has more to do with how its digital network has developed than the actual content of the theory itself.

Most other far-right communities are much more insular, and usually make an attempt to draw their digital borders along race- or gender-based lines by emphasizing purity. In practice it never quite works, because of the porous nature of digital subcultures, but it makes for a hostile environment for non-white, non-male newcomers.

QAnon, by contrast, has looked for converts anywhere it can find them, making the slogan “where we go one we go all” (usually abbreviated to the hashtag #WWG1WGA) its rallying cry. It’s no surprise that anti-Semitism, a familiar staple of so many conspiracy theories, can be found in QAnon communities, but in general, racial purity isn’t a central factor.

It has also mutated as it has spread. QAnon may have started on 4chan and 8chan, but it quickly left such message boards behind for more mainstream platforms like Facebook and Instagram, Ms. Crawford said — platforms where young women are very active. It engaged in a partial “rebrand,” appropriating “#SavetheChildren” and other already-existing human trafficking campaigns and hashtags. And when majority-female anti-vaccine groups on Facebook began suggesting dark forces were at play in the Covid-19 crisis and expanded into anti-mask, anti-lockdown sentiment, QAnon eagerly folded all of these conspiracies into its own master narrative.

Today, the lines between the two have blurred; who is “just” an anti-vaxxer and who has gone full QAnon? It’s not clear that participants themselves draw a distinction. The “Covid-skeptic” communities I monitor on Facebook casually drop in comments about “the cabal” and child trafficking with little to no resistance from the rest of the group and, crucially, no platform moderation. It’s clear that even if these users wouldn’t recognize QAnon itself, or view themselves as supporters, they’re certainly familiar with its talking points.

Those videos of mothers bemoaning the brainwashing of their children? They’re not only compelling and dramatic content, but are also easily shared in other parenting groups with little indication of their far-right origins. It’s not just that women are more likely to become prominent influencers in the QAnon digital network; it is actively useful for QAnon for them to do so.

Why does the gender of those who subscribe to QAnon matter? It matters less for what it tells us about women and what they may or may not believe, and more for how it could potentially shape our own response to QAnon.

Conspiracy theories are no less dangerous even when they claim to be driven by maternal love. At the heart of QAnon lies an undeniably frightening ethos that demands harsh punishment, even execution, for its ever-growing list of political enemies. History teaches us that sex panics do not end well for society’s most vulnerable minorities; QAnon and its offshoots must be rejected in the strongest possible terms.

But this becomes more personally and politically difficult if the theory’s adherents look less like our traditional conception of fascists and more like ordinary concerned mothers taking a stand for child sex abuse victims. The alt-right, for instance, cloaked and distracted from its dangerous views with khakis and polo shirts; we must be careful to avoid the same pattern here, of allowing unexpected aesthetics to obscure a toxic ideology.

If QAnon is indeed mutating as it spreads, we must not to be fooled by its changing appearance. Our answer must be a balance of empathy for those who have been drawn in by QAnon’s seductive message, coupled with a firm rejection of its lies.

Virginia Giuffre, one of Jeffrey Epstein’s accusers, who accused him of keeping her as a “sex slave” with the assistance of his long-time associate Ghislaine Maxwell, has told a US appeals court that Maxwell’s desire for privacy fails to justify the sealing of her deposition and keeping it out of the public eye.

Giuffre’s lawyers put out the argument in a court filing with the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals before the Sept. 22 oral arguments around the publication of the now settled defamation lawsuit against the socialite.

Several documents related to the case were unsealed in July, and Maxwell is appealing against the US district judge’s order to release other case materials. That also includes her April 2016 deposition by a second accuser of Epstein.

Ms Giuffre’s lawyers, Sigrid McCawley and David Boies, told the Manhattan-based appeals court that “Maxwell’s vague argument about privacy interests cannot justify total closure of the deposition materials … [and overcome] the public’s presumption of access.”

The 58-year-old Maxwell — a confidante to Epstein — has pleaded not guilty in a case which sees her helping Epstein recruit girls so that he could abuse them The case revolves around the recruitment of three underage girls between 1994 to 1997. She is also under trial for denying involvement with the late pedo financier under oath — an act of perjury.

The trial in this case is scheduled to begin next July — until then, Maxwell is under protective custody.

Theranos (/ˈθɛrənoʊs/) was a privately held health technology corporation.[2] It was initially touted as a breakthrough technology company, with claims of having devised blood tests that required only very small amounts of blood and could be performed very rapidly using small automated devices the company had developed. On March 14, 2018, Theranos, Holmes, and former company president Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani were charged with "massive fraud" by the SEC.[17] One section of the complaint says Holmes falsely claimed in 2014 that the company had annual revenues of $100 million, a thousand times more than the actual figure of $100,000.[18] Theranos and Holmes agreed to resolve the charges against them, with Holmes paying a fine of $500,000, returning the remaining 18.9 million shares that she held, relinquishing her control of the company, and being barred from being an officer or director of any public company for ten years.[19] According to the agreement, if Theranos were acquired or otherwise liquidated, Holmes would not profit from her ownership until more than $750 million was returned to investors and other preferred shareholders. Theranos and Holmes neither admitted nor denied the allegations in the SEC's complaint.[7] Balwani did not settle.[20] On June 15, 2018, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California announced the indictment of Holmes on wire fraud and conspiracy charges. Balwani was also indicted on the same charges.[21]The trial was scheduled to commence in August 2020,[22] but it has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Portland, Oregon Imposes Strict Ban on Facial-Recognition Technology

Portland officials this week passed the country's strictest ban on facial recognition, prohibiting use of the technology by private businesses and government agencies across Oregon's largest city.

Cities in California and Massachusetts have recently taken action against local government use of the technology—but none as strongly as Portland, which restricts commercial business applications, as well.

"All Portlanders are entitled to a city government that will not use technology with demonstrated racial and gender biases that endanger personal privacy," Mayor Ted Wheeler said during a Wednesday City Council meeting, as reported by CNET. "This is the first-of-its-kind legislation in the nation, and I believe in the world," he added. "This is truly a historic day for the city of Portland."

The bill, which passed unanimously, is set to take effect Jan. 1, 2021. In the intervening months, various city bureaus will work together to develop a plan for "creating public awareness on impacts and uses" of facial recognition—particularly around children, marginalized communities, and local businesses.

"Portland residents and visitors should enjoy access to public spaces with a reasonable assumption of anonymity and personal privacy," according to the city ordinance. "This is true for particularly those who have been historically over-surveilled and experience surveillance technologies differently."

In a seven-page document detailing the prohibition, the council noted that facial-recognition technologies "have been documented to have an unacceptable gender and racial bias"—particularly toward those in the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities.

"The city needs to take precautionary actions until these technologies are certified and safe to use and civil liberties issues are resolved," the council said, adding that surveillance technologies "must be transparent, accountable, and designed in ways that protect personal and collective privacy."

Hurricane center monitors 7 tropical systems, one just off Florida

Living up to the phrase “peak of hurricane season,” the National Hurricane Center is juggling seven tropical systems Thursday morning, including Tropical Storms Paulette and Rene, as well as a disturbance that formed just east of Florida.

September 10 is considered the peak of hurricane season, statically the most common date to have a large number of tropical systems in the Atlantic basin, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The NHC identified a new disturbance a couple hundred miles northeast of the Central Bahamas, according to the 8 a.m. update. While there’s just a 30% chance it could develop into a depression or storm in the next five days, the system could be near Florida on Friday, the NHC said.

Hurricane specialists are also still eyeing Tropical Storm Rene, which will be moving through an environment with moderate, vertical wind shear through the week, according to the 5 a.m. update. Gradual strengthening is forecast for the next two days, and Rene should become a hurricane briefly on Friday, the 6th hurricane of the busy 2020 season. It should be a tropical storm again by the start of next week.

Pope Francis has praised the "simply divine" pleasures of eating and sex, according to a book that has just been released of conversations he had with a prominent Italian gastronomist.

Carlo Petrini, 71, a pioneer of the "slow food" movement, spoke with the head of the Catholic Church between May 2018 and July 2020 on a number of topics for the book Terra Futura: Conversations with Pope Francis on integral ecology.

During the dialogues, the pope, who was born Jorge Bergoglio in Argentina, described the pleasures of a well-cooked meal and "sexual pleasure." In his view, these had previously fallen victim to "over zealousness" by the Catholic Church in the past in what was a "wrong interpretation of the Christian message."

"Pleasure arrives directly from God, it is neither Catholic, nor Christian, nor anything else, it is simply divine," the pope said, according to RTE.

"The Church has condemned inhuman, brutish, vulgar pleasure, but has on the other hand always accepted human, simple, moral pleasure."

"The pleasure of eating is there to keep you healthy by eating, just like sexual pleasure is there to make love more beautiful and guarantee the perpetuation of the species," the pope said, adding that opposing views "have caused enormous harm, which can still be felt strongly today in some cases."

"The pleasure of eating and sexual pleasure come from God," he said. The pope also mentioned the 1987 Danish film Babette's Feast—about a chef who invites ultra-puritan Protestants to a banquet— as reflecting his message on pleasure and as "a hymn to Christian charity, to love.

Catholic commentator and writer Peter Williams said that Pope Francis "is unusual as popes go, in giving answers in interviews that are as casual and off-the-cuff. So, if his words sound odd, it's probably because he likes to talk in a very down-to-earth manner."

"I don't think it's unusual for a pope to say what he specifically said though. In calling the enjoyment of food and sex 'divine', the Holy Father is rightly pointing out that pleasure comes from God," Williams told Newsweek, adding that the pontiff was reiterating "the church's acceptance of 'human, simple, moral pleasure', like good cuisine and fulsome sexual love in marriage."

"Pope Francis is simply repeating the perennial Christian message on virtue and vice. By avoiding the twin evil extremes of repressive puritanism on the one hand, and immoral libertinism on the other, both of which prevent or destroy happy enjoyment of good things like food or sex, the Church rightly espouses the 'golden mean,'" Williams added.

Two candidates President Donald Trump endorsed have won their New Hampshire primaries, setting up contests in November that could oust Democrats from Congress.

Bryant “Corky” Messner won the GOP nominee slot for the U.S. Senate, defeating Retired Brig. General Donald Bolduc and two other long shot candidates and setting up a contest against Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s (D-NH) bid for a third term.

“We’re not going to celebrate, we’re going to unify,” he told supporters at a gathering organized by the Trump campaign, according to the Associated Press. “I’m not celebrating anything, I’m going to work, because we have a big mission ahead of us.”

AP reported on the now-Senate primary candidate:

The 63-year-old Army veteran and attorney cast himself as a political outsider, saying he gained leadership experience in the military and private sector after founding a Denver law firm that has expanded to eight other cities. Bolduc, his main opponent, tried to use that outsider label against him, contrasting his deep roots to New Hampshire with Messner’s relatively recent arrival from Colorado.

After owning a vacation home in Wolfeboro for many years, Messner only made it his permanent residence about two years ago. But he said voters rarely brought that up to him, and that his background and ideas won them over.

Messner poured nearly $3.8 million of his own money into his campaign, making up nearly 90% of the total he raised as of Aug. 19. He had $2.5 million on hand, compared to Shaheen, who had raised $15.6 million by that date and had $7.2 million left. Both are likely to rake in substantial sums raised nationally before the general election, however.

“They better not underestimate me,” Messner said. “We are coming for Jeanne Shaheen.”

A former Trump administration official at the State Department will now take on Democrat U.S. Rep Chris Pappas in November.

Matt Mowers, 31, defeated Matt Mayberry, a 55-year-old Air Force veteran and realtor, on the GOP side in the 1st District, according to AP.

Mowers’ platform includes shifting production of supplies to fight the coronavirus from China to the United States and fighting illegal immigration.

“Voters across the First District have severe buyer’s remorse with Chris Pappas, who campaigned as an independent voice and then sadly went to Washington and voted with Nancy Pelosi and her liberal agenda 100 percent of the time,” Mowers said in the AP report. “I’m humbled at the support from Granite Staters, and pledge to offer a new vision of leadership that will deliver results for middle class families.”

“In the other House race, Democratic U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster, seeking her fifth term representing the 2nd District, easily defeated Joseph Mirzoeff,” AP reported.

Kuster will compete with Steve Negron in a rematch of their 2018 race. Negron beat Lynne Blankenbeker, a combat nurse and Navy Reserve captain from Concord, in the Republican primary.

Trump did not endorse Negron but he has said he is a supporter of the president.

“We now continue the fight to unseat Ann Kuster and reform dysfunctional Washington,” Negron said in a statement. “Tonight’s win demonstrated that New Hampshire wants more from representation.”

“The hard work doesn’t stop here,” Negron said. “We need to hit the ground running to bring New Hampshire’s voice back to Washington; defending our small state voice, law and order, and confronting the lies of the Pelosi/Kuster agenda.”

Report: North Korea could test SLBM ahead of U.S. election

Sept. 10 (UPI) – North Korea could test launch a submarine-launched ballistic missile in the coming months after displaying its intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities, according to a South Korean press report.

Pyongyang could engage in provocations after Oct. 10, when the regime is set to observe the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Korean Workers' Party, South Korean newspaper Donga Ilbo reported Thursday, citing South Korean military sources.

During a planned military parade on the anniversary, North Korea could unveil a new ICBM and draw international attention to its arsenal of weapons capable of reaching the continental United States. The move would be strategic and timed to occur before the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 3.

North Korea could take its strategy a step further with the test of an SLBM, such as the Pukguksong-3, to raise tensions with the United States around the time of the November election, the Donga's source said.

"Both U.S. and South Korean intelligence officials understand the new ICBM represents the 'final negotiating card' for North Korea, whether President Donald Trump is re-elected or a new administration takes his place," the South Korean source said.

According to the Donga, Seoul and Washington believe North Korea's new ICBM is equipped with a solid fuel engine. It has a stronger thrust than the existing Hwasong-14 or Hwasong-15, the North Korean long-range missiles that use a liquid fuel engine. Recent flights of U.S. spy planes near the Korean Peninsula were conducted in order to determine whether North Korea is to display the new ICBM at the October military parade, the report says.
