You may argue that Rugrats or Smaug are creative works that may have originated by individual authors, but have been (consensually) put up to be further developed by dozens to thousands of other creatives. In that sense the idea is no longer the product of any one individual--it takes on a social rather than individual character, public rather than personal. And that sonas are personal and close to the "author".

The reality is that the only difference is that the latter is published popularly and the former is not. Smaug is an OC of Tolkien's and Mohamed is a mythology of a real-life person and their ideology. The screaming and deletions and crying over sexualized OC and/or reposting "art" has nothing to do with intellectual property and everything to do with drama in response to someone using a published furry character that was put out in the open.

TL;DR: Publicly posted imagery is subject to public response and use and unlike state-property, there is nothing and no-one that will reinforce your private property except your own privatization and not publishing content.
