On May 10, 1865, the conspirators for the assassination of Abraham Lincoln were arraigned before the Military Commission of the Johnson administration.

DOJ spokesperson 'very disappointed' in Chuck Todd for 'deceptive editing' of Barr's comments on Flynn case

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice accused Chuck Todd of deceptively editing a video clip of William Barr. Todd played a clip on "Meet the Press" that appeared to be purposely cut short to misinterpret Barr's comments about the charges being dropped against former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

On Sunday morning, Todd played a clip from Barr's recent interview with Catherine Herridge on CBS News. However, the clip played did not provide Barr's full answer, which told a completely different story than the snippet given.

Herridge asked Barr, "When history looks back on this decision, how do you think it will be written?"

"Well, history is written by the winner. So it largely depends on who's writing the history," Barr replied.

After playing the short clip, Todd said, "I was struck, Peggy, by the cynicism of the answer. It's a correct answer, but he's the attorney general. He didn't make the case that he was upholding the rule of law. He was almost admitting that, yeah, this is a political job."

However, Barr's full response to Herridge puts his answer in a completely different context.

"Well, history is written by the winner. So it largely depends on who's writing the history," Barr told Herridge. "But I think a fair history would say it was a good decision because it upheld the rule of law, it upheld the standards of the Department of Justice, and it undid what was an injustice."

Explosion Rocks Turkish-Occupied City In Northern Syria. Casualties Reported

On May 10, a large explosion rocked the center of the Turkish-occupied city of al-Bab in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

Local sources said a heavy improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in a local market, near the Center roundabout in city’s center. The explosion took place before Iftar, the first meal eaten by fasting Muslims after sunset in Ramadan.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), a civilian was killed and more than 20 others were injured. Some of the injured people, including a child, are reportedly in a critical condition.

There was no immediate claim for the al-Bab attack. Both ISIS and Kurdish forces are usually accused of orchestrating such attacks in Turkish-occupied areas.

Last month, a booby-trapped truck packed with dozens of fuel barrels exploded in the occupied city of Afrin. The attack killed and injured over 100 people, including women and children. The perpetrators have not been uncovered yet.

These attacks shade light on the deteriorating security situation in Turkish-occupied areas in north and northeast Syria. The Turkish military and its proxies appear to be unable to secure the area.

Last month, a drone flew around New York City and instructed people to practice proper social distancing guidelines. Drones have been used by police departments in San Diego and Connecticut to warn people of the dangers of the novel coronavirus. State and local entities around the country are using drones manufactured and donated by Chinese company DJI for coronavirus distancing enforcement. In Singapore, they have a four-legged, dog-like robot equipped with cameras that patrols a park during the COVID-19 pandemic to remind people to social distance.

A robot named "Spot" is patrolling Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park to tell people to practice social distancing by broadcasting a recorded message. The robot is equipped with sensors and cameras, plus it features 3D-mapping and video analytics developed by GovTech that allow it to estimate the number of visitors in the park. Singapore said that the cameras on the robot would not track people or use facial recognition.

Spot is controlled remotely and can walk on paths as well as in the grass. Spot can venture in wooded areas that flying drones might have difficulty operating in.

A well-known engineer who worked at Google and Uber named Anthony Levandowski has founded a new AI-based religion called Way of the Future. The charter? To worship and understand “the Godhead” for the betterment of society.

Saudi Arabia triples VAT to support chinavirus-hit economy

Saudi Arabia is tripling its value added tax (VAT) as part of austerity measures to support its chinavirus-hit economy. The government in Riyadh also said it will suspend its cost of living allowance to shore up state finances. The oil-rich nation has seen its income plummet as the impact of the pandemic has forced down global energy prices.

The kingdom first introduced VAT two years ago as part of efforts to cut its reliance on world energy markets. Saudi Arabia's state news agency said VAT will increase from 5% to 15% as of 1 July, while the cost of living allowance will be suspended from 1 June.

"These measures are painful but necessary to maintain financial and economic stability over [the] medium to long term… and overcome the unprecedented chinavirus crisis with the least damage possible," finance minister Mohammed al-Jadaan said in the statement. The announcement came after state spending outstripped income, pushing the kingdom into a $9bn (£7.2bn) budget deficit in the first three months of the year.

That's as oil revenues in the period fell by almost a quarter from a year earlier to $34bn, pulling down total revenues by 22%.

At the same time Saudi Arabia's central bank saw its foreign reserves fall in March at their fastest rate in at least two decades and to their lowest level since 2011.

The measures to fight the spread of chinavirus are expected to slow the pace and scale of economic reforms launched by Crown Price Mohammed bin Salman. Last year Saudi Arabia raised a record $25.6bn in the initial public offering of shares in state-owned oil giant Aramco in Riyadh.

The share sale was at the heart of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's plans to modernize the economy and wean it off its dependence on oil.

Donald Trump continued to fume over the Russia investigation on Sunday, more than a year after special counsel Robert Mueller filed his report without recommending charges against the president but only three days after the justice department said it would drop its case against Michael Flynn, Trump’s first national security adviser.

“The biggest political crime in American history, by far!” the president wrote in a tweet accompanying a conservative talk show host’s claim that Barack Obama “used his last weeks in office to target incoming officials and sabotage the new administration”.

The tweet echoed previous messages retweeted by Trump, which earned rebukes for relaying conspiracy theories. On Sunday afternoon the president continued to send out a stream of tweets of memes and rightwing talking heads claiming an anti-Trump conspiracy. One tweet by Trump simply read: “OBAMAGATE!”

Trump fired Flynn, a retired general, in early 2017, for lying to Vice-President Mike Pence about conversations with the Russian ambassador regarding sanctions levied by the Obama administration in retaliation for interference in the 2016 election.

The US intelligence community has long held that such efforts were meant to tip the election towards Trump and away from Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee.

Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI – which Trump has acknowledged – and co-operated with Mueller, who was appointed to take over the investigation of Russian interference after Trump fired FBI director James Comey.

Mueller did not establish a criminal conspiracy but did lay out extensive links between Trump and Moscow and instances of possible obstruction of justice by the president.
