Roy Horn of Legendary Magic Duo ‘Siegfried and Roy’ Dies of Coronavirus

The world lost a Magic Legend on Saturday as the famous Roy of Siegfried and Roy passed away on Friday.

Roy Horn, one-half of the popular Las Vegas animal and magic act Siegfried and Roy, died Friday of complications from the coronavirus, according to his publicist. He was 75.

Roy Uwe Ludwig Horn and Siegfried Fischbacher began their upbeat performances in Europe, later becoming regulars in Las Vegas, where they performed for four decades.

“Roy was a fighter his whole life including during these final days,” Fischbacher said in a statement. “I give my heartfelt appreciation to the team of doctors, nurses and staff at Mountain View Hospital who worked heroically against this insidious virus that ultimately took Roy’s life.”

Their revue ended after Horn was attacked on stage by a white tiger named Mantecore in October 2003, severing his spine.

The attack happened on Horn’s 59th birthday, and an audience member told CNN at the time that Horn “looked like a rag doll in his mouth.” Horn suffered massive blood loss and stroke, and required two surgeries.

Horn believed the attack was a reaction to a stroke and afterward called Mantecore “my lifesaver,” his publicist said.

Horn eventually was able to walk again, but he and Siegfried would only perform together one more time for a benefit before retiring in 2010. He spent the rest of his life traveling, visiting his animals and attending shows and philanthropic events in Las Vegas, the statement said.

FLASHBACK: Barack Obama Pardoned a Former General Who Lied to the FBI

In a leaked phone conversation recording with former members of his administration released last week, Barack Obama claimed that the “rule of law is at risk” because of the “unprecedented” move by the Justice Department to drop charges against Michael Flynn, who was the victim of a perjury trap set up by officials in the FBI. Flynn was coerced into pleading guilty to lying to FBI officials.

“The news over the last 24 hours I think has been somewhat downplayed — about the Justice Department dropping charges against Michael Flynn,” Obama said. “And the fact that there is no precedent that anybody can find for someone who has been charged with perjury just getting off scot-free. That’s the kind of stuff where you begin to get worried that basic — not just institutional norms — but our basic understanding of rule of law is at risk. And when you start moving in those directions, it can accelerate pretty quickly as we’ve seen in other places.”

But, in 2017, just days before leaving office, Barack Obama pardoned retired Marine Corps general James E. Cartwright, who pleaded guilty to charges of lying to the FBI.

Cartwright served as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Obama, and was “a key member of Mr. Obama’s national security team in his first term and earned a reputation as the president’s favorite general,” according to the New York Times. Cartwright had leaked classified information regarding Iran’s nuclear program to the media and lied to FBI officials investigating those leaks. He faced up to two years in prison before Obama pardoned him.

General Cartwright left government in 2011. The leak investigation that ensnared him began in June 2012, when David E. Sanger, a reporter for The New York Times, published a book, “Confront and Conceal,” and an article in The Times that described Operation Olympic Games, an American-Israeli covert effort to sabotage Iranian nuclear centrifuges with a computer virus. F.B.I. agents came to believe that General Cartwright had also been a source for a February 2012 Newsweek article that discussed cyberattacks against Iran.

But when F.B.I. agents interviewed the retired general about the book and articles, he initially lied about his discussions with the journalists, according to a government sentencing memo.

The memo said the agents showed the general emails that contradicted his account, and he passed out and was hospitalized. Several days later, when the interview resumed, he changed his account of the discussions.

Obama reportedly based his decision to pardon the former general on Cartwright’s “description of his motive, as well as because of a letter by Mr. Sanger saying that he had already learned about the program before speaking to the general and that the conversation with the general informed his thinking about which information to withhold.”

Cartwright had only pleaded guilty to misleading the FBI, not to disclosing classified information.

General Flynn’s case, however, was dropped following revelations that Obama officials in the FBI had set up a perjury trap for him in order to get him fired as a Trump adviser. Obama officials also withheld exculpatory evidence, launched and carried out a bogus investigation over claims of Russian collusion of where there was no empirical evidence.

But, according to Obama, dropping the case against Flynn (who was the victim of entrapment and was pressured into pleading guilty) was an “unprecedented” move that put the rule of law is “at risk.”

Atlanta Mayor on Arbery Shooting: Rhetoric From the White House Gives 'Permission' to Racists

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that rhetoric from the White House gave “permission” to people who are “prone to being racist” and contributed to the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, a black man killed by two white men, in February.

Donald Trump called the shooting of the unarmed jogger a “very disturbing situation” and that “law enforcement is going to take a look at it.”

Arbery was shot by Gregory and Travis McMichael, who suspected Arbery of being involved in several home burglaries. Travis McMichael, the 34-year-old son of Gregory, had been involved in the prosecution of Arbery a few years ago on an unknown charge, although those circumstances have not been made public.

But there’s enough evidence to convict the McMicael’s of lynching, if not murder according to Bottoms.

The Hill:

“The rhetoric that we hear coming out of the White House in many ways, I think many who are prone to being racist are given permission to do it in an overt way in a way we wouldn’t [otherwise] see in 2020,” she said.

Bottoms said if local leadership fails in cities across the country, the Justice Department is supposed to step in and “make sure people are appropriately prosecuted.”

“But we don’t have that leadership at the top right now,” she said. “It’s disheartening. I have four kids, three of whom are African-American boys. They are afraid, they are angry.”

There’s more to this story that has yet to come out, but the verdict is in; guilty of racism. And not just the McMichaels, but Donald Trump as well.

The charge that rhetoric “enables” racists to commit violent, racist acts is absurd. Using that reasoning, no one should ever be able to disagree with any black activist because any counterargument will “enable” racists and white supremacists. It’s a phony argument that resonates with the black community, and not many more.

Frankly, it’s a charge that’s becoming stale. To agree with Bottoms, you have to accept the premise that she alone can discern “racist rhetoric” from the White House. Trump rarely utters anything racial at all and when he comments on race, it’s usually milquetoast bromides that are relatively uncontroversial.

That occasionally gets him in trouble because, apparently, he doesn’t emote enough about his hatred of racism. When he blamed violent, thuggish crazies on both sides for the violence in Charlotte a few years ago, the left went ballistic, saying that Trump “enabled” more violence.

Racists and white supremacists don’t need any encouragement to commit acts of violence. They are perfectly capable of hating all by themselves. That they see Trump as a kindred spirit isn’t the president’s fault, nor is it his responsibility.

Bottoms should stick to commenting on the homegrown racism in Georgia and not try to make every shooting of a black man by white people as representative of something national.

Israeli Court Rules Convict Who Ran International Child Porn Ring ‘Safe’ To Practice As Pediatrician

A Jewish pediatrician who was convicted of possessing and distributing some 190,000 child pornography videos and images can serve as a medical supervisor at the Health Ministry’s student health services department, an Israeli court ruled last week:

"Avraham Barkai will be able to pay visits to schools but not treat children in his new position, which a panel of judges at the Nazareth Regional Labor Court determined that he should be allowed to fill, going against the recommendation of the Civil Service Commission.

Barkai was convicted in 2011 of being part of an international child pornography distribution ring and later sentenced to 18 months behind bars. However, the punishment was reduced on appeal to six months of community service, a nine-month suspended sentence and a NIS 20,000 ($5,690) fine.

For over a year up to his conviction, but after he had already been charged, Barkai continued to practice at a Haifa clinic of the Meuhedet HMO after a Health Ministry disciplinary committee ruled that he could continue to see children as long as a parent or nurse was in the room.

The disciplinary committee went on to rule that despite the charges, Barkai did not pose a danger to children as he had not been accused of physical acts against minors. As a result, it ruled that the pediatrician’s license should only be stripped for two years, and by July 2013 Barkai got his license back….

However, senior officials in the Health Ministry have come to Barkai’s defense. In 2014, the Health Ministry’s senior vice president of Administration and Human Resources, Dov Passat, submitted a letter to the disciplinary committee asserting that there should be nothing preventing Barkai from applying for tenders for positions as a pediatrician. The letter was submitted by Barkai as an official position of the Health Ministry to the Petah Tivka Magistrate’s Court, which ruled in 2018 that he be granted an exemption from the ban on employing convicted sex offenders as he does not pose a risk to the public, even if he works as a pediatrician.

In late 2018, a medical board voted unanimously to award Barkai a position as medical supervisor at the Health Ministry’s student health services department in the northern district. The Civil Service Commission subsequently interfered and blocked the appointment, stating in a 2019 hearing that “while the job at hand does not require clinical care for children, its core is oversight of student services and some of its assignments take place on school grounds and during the school day… Taking into account the nature of the offenses of which Dr. Barkai was convicted, [granting him this position] can greatly damage the image of the Civil Service Commission and the public’s confidence in its institutions.” "

President Obama was in on plot to 'frame' Flynn, attorney says

Former National Security Adviser Gen. Michael Flynn's lead attorney accused top officials of orchestrating a plot to frame her client, insisting that former President Barack Obama himself was in on it.

Flynn had initially pleaded guilty to providing a false statement to the FBI regarding his contact with a Russian ambassador, but later changed his story and pushed back by questioning the FBI's tactics.

"These agents specifically schemed and planned with each other how to not tip him off, that he was even the person being investigated," Powell told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures," pointing to evidence that FBI agents took a casual approach with Flynn, not telling him they were investigating him and not warning him that it would be a federal crime to lie during their conversation.

"So they kept him relaxed and unguarded deliberately as part of their effort to set him up and frame him," Powell said.

According to recently released testimony, President Obama revealed during an Oval Office meeting weeks before the interview that he knew about Flynn's phone call with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, apparently surprising then-Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates.

After the meeting, Obama asked Yates and then-FBI Director James Comey to "stay behind." Obama "specified that he did not want any additional information on the matter, but was seeking information on whether the White House should be treating Flynn any differently, given the information."

"The whole thing was orchestrated and set up within the FBI, [former Director of National Intelligence James] Clapper, [Former CIA Director John] Brennan, and in the Oval Office meeting that day with President Obama," Powell said.

When asked if she believes that Flynn was the victim of a plot that went all the way up to Obama, Powell said, "Absolutely."

Unidentified Gunmen Target Turkish-Backed Sham Corps In Eastern Idlib Once Again

On May 10, unidentified gunmen attacked a headquarters of the Turkish-backed Sham Corps near the town of Binnish in the eastern Idlib countryside.

“Clashes took place between the headquarters’ personnel and the attackers, before the latter run away … There is no information on any casualties until this moment,” the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said in a report.

A series of attacks targeted positions and personnel of the Sham Corps in the southern and eastern Idlib countryside over the last few weeks. In the most recent attack, which occurred on May 7, gunmen attacked a headquarters of the group near the towns of al-Fu’ah and Kafriya.

In a speech with Enab Baladi, a pro-opposition news outlet, Capt. Naji Mustafa, a spokesman for the Sham Corps, said the attacks are being investigating without providing any additional details on the matter.

Another spokesman for the group, Saif Ra’ad, told Enab Baladi that eight attacks targeted Turkish-backed militants in southern and eastern Idlib in the last few days. Equipment and arms were stolen in some of the attacks.

Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham was accused of plotting some of the attacks. The group was recently provoked by the Sham Corps’ close work with Turkish forces to reopen the M4 highway. However, there is no evidence confirming the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham involvement in attacks yet.

A Chinese rocket measuring around 100 feet long that launched earlier this month will likely plunge back into Earth’s atmosphere some time Monday, becoming the most massive object in decades to fall out of orbit in an uncontrolled manner.

The core stage of China’s Long March 5B rocket is expected to fall back to Earth unguided after nearly a week in orbit. The Long March 5B rocket launched May 5 with a prototype for a next-generation Chinese crew capsule.

As of Saturday, the rocket stage was circling Earth in an elliptical orbit ranging between 94 miles (152 kilometers) and 167 miles (270 kilometers) in altitude, according to U.S. military tracking data. A prediction issued Saturday by the U.S. military, which tracks objects in orbit, forecasts the rocket’s re-entry in a 24-hour period between 2335 GMT (7:35 p.m. EDT) Sunday and 2335 GMT (7:35 p.m. EDT) Monday.

But uncontrolled re-entries are difficult to predict, and the forecast could change as ground-based radars continue tracking the Long March 5B rocket body in orbit. Changes in atmospheric drag and solar activity could move time of re-entry earlier or later.

A one-minute error in predicting the re-entry time changes the location of potential falling debris by nearly 300 miles, or about 500 kilometers, according to the Aerospace Corp.

The Long March 5B rocket body is in an orbit that flies between 41.1 degrees north and south latitude, meaning the re-entry could occur as far north as around New York City, or as far south as Wellington, New Zealand.

Maj. Cody Chiles, a Combined Force Space Component Command spokesperson, said Friday that the U.S. Space Force’s 18th Space Control Squadron is tracking the Chinese Long March 5B rocket body. The object is approximately 20 meters squared in size, Chiles said in response to an inquiry from Spaceflight Now.

The core stage of the Long March 5B rocket measures around 100 feet (30 meters) long and 16 feet (5 meters) wide.

Leaders are dealing with the crisis on a largely national basis, but the virus’s society-dissolving effects do not recognize borders. While the assault on human health will – hopefully – be temporary, the political and economic upheaval it has unleashed could last for generations. No country, not even the U.S., can in a purely national effort overcome the virus. Addressing the necessities of the moment must ultimately be coupled with a global collaborative vision and program. If we cannot do both in tandem, we will face the worst of each.

Although one could argue that Globalization has lead to the Coronavirus problem, Kissinger insists that only a big sloppy bucket of more Globalization is the answer. Furthermore, this raises questions. Why exactly can’t the United States deal with this problem? I actually think social media gets more blame than it deserves, while the real enemy is more the corporations which create cults around their products using social media. Social media is good in that it shows you "ideal" lives which can encourage someone to better themself in order to work hard to achieve their dreams. The problem is no one has that attitude because they're used to getting everything they want instantly, and when they get older it gets harder and nobody wants to grow up, so they focus only on survival in the moment, and at the end of the day it's the corporations that give them products to feel better.

As for politics on social media, the popular conservatives are 95% neocon/Koch types. Sure it's good to have people attacking socialism and leftism but at the end of the day most of it seems like a waste when it's not going after the core issues. People will spend hours watching videos but then they won't even ascertain the differences between Ben Shapiro and Tucker Carlson. And people like Ben Shapiro, don't get me started.
