Rep. Tom Kean Jr. represents New Jersey’s most competitive district this November — but nobody, even his GOP colleagues, can say where he’s been for the past month.

A scion of one of the state’s most storied political dynasties, Kean’s team says the two-term congressmember is facing unspecified health issues. The New Jersey Republican hasn’t voted since March 5 and has missed almost 50 roll call votes.

The other two Republicans in the New Jersey delegation, Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, said they have called and texted Kean out of concern for his health. But so far, neither said they have heard from him. Van Drew said it’s been “radio silence.”

Several New York Republicans who have worked with Kean on key issues said similarly. Kean’s absence has largely fallen under the radar and GOP leaders haven’t addressed the issue to the conference, according to several Republicans.

One Republican, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), said he didn’t even realize Kean had been missing until he tried to find him on the House floor Tuesday.

“I was looking for him,” Bacon said in an interview Wednesday. “I didn’t know it was that long.”

“I know the congressman and his family appreciate all of the well wishes and support,” Kean consultant Harrison Neely told POLITICO. “Please know that he will be back on a regular full schedule very soon.”

Closer to home, Kean’s allies also expect him to come back soon.

“I don’t even know the truth myself or even enough to disclose any information,” Union County GOP Chair Carlos Santos told POLITICO. “But I have been texting with him and was told he’ll be fine and make a full recovery in the next couple weeks.”

Kean represents New Jersey’s most competitive House seat — the 7th Congressional District, a large swath across the northern and central part of the state that includes Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster. President Donald Trump narrowly carried it by one point in the 2024 presidential race, but Democratic former Rep. Mikie Sherrill carried the district by nearly two points in the 2025 governor’s race. Kean won the district by around five points in 2024.

Kean enters reelection in what could be his most challenging congressional bid to date. He faces an environment that is increasingly challenging for Republicans and the Trump administration is opening an immigration detention facility in his district while pulling funding for a major infrastructure project for New Jersey commuters — both of which have put him in a precarious position.

But Kean’s backers say his temporary absence will hardly be on voters’ minds come November.

“Everyone understands from their own family experiences that people run into unexpected health issues,” Bill Palatucci, a Republican National Committee member and attorney to the Kean campaign, told POLITICO. “Voters will be completely sympathetic and it’s so early in the year that it will be long forgotten come the fall.”

There is a competitive Democratic primary to take on Kean, with four prominent candidates.

Democrats in the New Jersey delegation have also noticed his absence and have started to be concerned for the congressmember’s health. Those members have also not heard anything.

“It’s been a long absence,” New Jersey Democrat Rep. Rob Menendez said. “I hope he’s doing all right. But I haven’t heard anything.”

NASA Targets Early September for Roman Space Telescope Launch

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope team now is targeting as soon as early September 2026 for launch, ahead of the agency’s commitment to flight no later than May 2027.

“Roman’s accelerated development is a true success story of what we can achieve when public investment, institutional expertise, and private enterprise come together to take on the near-impossible missions that change the world,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, who announced the update at a news conference on April 21 at the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Roman will pair a large field of view with crisp infrared vision to survey deep, vast swaths of sky. While the mission was designed with dark energy, dark matter, and exoplanets in mind, Roman’s unprecedented observational capability will offer practically limitless opportunities for astronomers to explore all kinds of cosmic topics.

By the end of its five-year primary mission, Roman is expected to amass a 20,000-terabyte data archive. Scientists can draw on it to identify and study 100,000 exoplanets, hundreds of millions of galaxies, billions of stars, and rare objects and phenomena — including some that astronomers have never witnessed before.

Roman will launch on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA and SpaceX will share more information about a specific launch date, and the agency will continue to share updates concerning prelaunch preparations as new information becomes available.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is managed at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, with participation by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech/IPAC in Southern California, the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, and scientists from various research institutions.

Kshatriya serves as the highest-ranking civil servant and chief operating officer at NASA. He leads the agency’s 10 center directors as well as the mission directorate associate administrators at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C.

In addition to touring research facilities, Kshatriya attended the inaugural Neil Armstrong Space Prize winner announcement. This transformative prize leverages Purdue’s unparalleled space heritage, having produced numerous astronauts and developing pioneering aerospace education and research.

Known as the Cradle of Astronauts, Purdue has 30 alumni who have flown in space or been selected as NASA astronaut candidates.

With the upcoming Virgin Galactic Purdue 1 suborbital flight mission, the university is set to send five more Boilermakers into space.

Can Chinese scientists bring Nasa’s ‘space spider’ dream to life?

For years, Nasa funded a project called SpiderFab – a spider-like robot that would crawl through orbit, weaving solar power stations and giant antennas from spools of carbon fibre – creating structures too large for any rocket to carry whole.

Although SpiderFab never ended up in space, scientists from the Shenyang Institute of Automation in northern China say they have built the key technologies to reach a similar goal.

The team first made the building blocks from a carbon-fibre composite, shaping it into long, hollow tubes using heat and pressure.

They then added 3D-printed connectors, bonding the tubes to the joints with lasers to create strong, lightweight links without bolts or glue.

The researchers built a scaled-down antenna structure in the lab to show that the idea worked, they reported in the journal Space: Science & Technology on April 3.

The study offers a lightweight, high-strength and reliable approach to building large space structures in orbit, according to the institute, which was added to the US Entity List in 2022 over alleged links to China’s military, hampering its access US technology and tech resources.

“Building structures in orbit removes the need to fold them into rockets or worry about size limits. Parts can be made, joined and assembled directly in space – potentially a core technology for next-generation space systems,” the institute said.

Today’s spacecraft are built on Earth and launched into orbit, but transporting them by rocket imposes hard limits.

Rocket fairings can only hold objects of a certain size, and the intense force of launch restricts the shipment of delicate structures. That makes it hard to build systems stretching hundreds of metres or more.

The idea of assembling items in space is not new. Astronauts have been bolting together pre-built modules since the 1980s, including the 109-metre-long (358-foot) International Space Station, which took more than 40 launches over 13 years to complete.

What engineers have long dreamed of is something more radical: manufacturing structures directly in orbit from raw materials, so size is no longer a constraint.

Over the years, the United States and Europe have proposed a series of projects to build and service structures in space, from Nasa’s SpiderFab to newer efforts aimed at manufacturing and assembling satellites in orbit, although none has yet left the ground.

The team in Shenyang focused on two key challenges: how to produce strong structural parts efficiently, and how to connect them reliably.

By fine-tuning temperature and processing speed, they optimised the material for strength, stiffness and durability in space, according to the paper.

Their laser-based joining method also avoided the weaknesses of traditional bolts or glue, producing more even, stable connections suited for long-term use in orbit.

The next step was to see how the materials held up in real space conditions, particularly how exposure to ultraviolet light and cosmic radiation might affect their long-term stability, the team said.

ESA and EDA launch joint study to strengthen Europe’s Earth observation capabilities

The European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Defence Agency (EDA) have signed an Implementing Arrangement to jointly identify strategic and technological gaps in Europe’s Earth observation capabilities and develop a long-term roadmap in support of security and defence.

The agreement was signed on 22 April in Brussels by ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and EDA Deputy Chief Anders Sjöborg.

The joint study will assess current and future Earth observation needs, identify critical capability gaps and define technology development priorities up to 2040 and beyond.

ESA said the work is intended to help ensure Europe remains prepared in a more complex geopolitical environment.

The study will build on existing cooperation between ESA and EDA and will be carried out over a period not exceeding 18 months. Both organisations will contribute equally to the costs.

ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher said: “Following the mandate given by our Member States to step up ESA’s role in security and defence, this agreement marks a meaningful move from intent to delivery.

Through initiatives such as the European Resilience from Space (ERS), ESA is already responding to Europe’s urgent security capability needs.

Strengthening our partnership with EDA allows us to align technology development more closely with both current and future operational and strategic requirements.”

ESA Director of Earth Observation Programmes Simonetta Cheli, who was present at the signature, added: “Earth observation is a cornerstone capability for security and defence.

Through this joint study, ESA and EDA will consolidate knowledge, highlight priorities and create a long‑term vision to reinforce Europe’s Earth observation capabilities in a coherent and efficient manner.”

EDA Chief Executive André Denk said: “In security and defence, knowledge is power, and from orbit, knowledge is constant, impartial, and without borders.

That’s why we invest today in foresight and resilience, creating the analytical basis to guide future research and development priorities.

Together with ESA, we will be identifying the most promising technological pathways to ensure that the EU retains Earth observation capabilities in support of the security and defence of our continent.”

ESA said the study is conducted within the framework of the 2011 Administrative Arrangement between ESA and EDA and builds on previous cooperation related to Earth observation.

It is also intended to contribute to implementation of ESA’s ERS initiative and to wider efforts aimed at strengthening Europe’s resilience and autonomy.

The Implementing Arrangement was approved by ESA Council in March 2026, following decisions made at the ESA Council at Ministerial level in November 2025 in Bremen.

Space Force shifts from SDA transport layer to new Space Data Network ‘backbone’

The Space Force once again does not plan to fund future iterations of a data relay constellation managed by the Space Development Agency (SDA), officials revealed, opting instead to build out a new constellation dubbed the “backbone” of the service’s budding Space Data Network (SDN).

“The Transport Layer for Tranche 3 is not funded,” a Space Force official said Tuesday during a briefing with reporters at the Pentagon for the unveiling of the service’s fiscal 2027 budget. “Those requirements are going to be rolled into the requirements being filled by the SDN backbone.”

For years, SDA has championed a satellite constellation known as the Transport Layer, composed of satellites launched to low-earth orbit in successive tranches.

But the Space Force has recently drifted away from the concept; last year, the service attempted to axe funding for SDA’s Tranche 3 birds, but Congress reinstated $500 million to continue the effort.

Around that time, Space Force officials were weighing whether to terminate the Transport Layer in favor of a program dubbed MILNET, which Breaking Defense previously reported could potentially involve shifting the data relay mission to SpaceX satellites.

While no longer called MILNET, the Space Force is still keen to shift toward that concept, but it’s not clear what systems may be used.

Speaking during the Tuesday budget briefing, Maj. Gen. Frank Verdugo the Air Force’s deputy assistant secretary for budget, confirmed that $1.6 billion in reconciliation funds requested by the service would build out the new SDN backbone consisting of a proliferated, low-earth orbit constellation. The backbone was “previously MILNET,” the general explained.

A Department of the Air Force (DAF) spokesperson additionally noted in a statement to Breaking Defense that the SDN backbone effort formerly known as MILNET will specifically be funded in a budget line for procurement dubbed “proliferated LEO SATCOM.”

The umbrella SDN concept will function similarly to how the Transport Layer was envisioned — a global satellite communications (SATCOM) network that can quickly move data between sensors and shooters.

The architecture will be overseen by Col. Ryan Frazier, the Space Force’s Space-Based Sensing and Targeting portfolio acquisition executive, and could be critical for marquee projects like the Golden Dome missile defense shield.

“The SDN program line fields a proliferated LEO mesh constellation and associated ground architecture providing resilient, high-volume, low-latency communications and tactical data links for the Joint Force.

Key efforts include the procurement of relay satellites as part of the SDN build-out, fielding ground gateways, and onboarding additional vendors into the architecture,” the spokesperson said.

On Wednesday, April 23 at 8:23 p.m. PT, Falcon 9 launched 24 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Ukrainian press gang shoves ‘volunteer’ off roof (VIDEO)

A draft enforcement squad in the Western Ukrainian region of Volyn has reportedly shoved an unwilling recruit off the roof of a private home where he was apparently trying to evade capture, according to local media and eyewitness footage circulating online.

The incident is said to have taken place in the village of Strymovka outside of Lutsk. Eyewitness videos depict a Territorial Recruitment Center officer demanding that a man on the roof of a single-story building get down of his own accord.

The draft enforcer then addresses the onlookers who are shooting the video, saying: “Youths, we will get all of you who are filming – I’m telling you – we’ll come over to you, too… Put down your cameras!”

The conscription officer then leans a ladder against the porch roof while telling his colleague to “get the gun” and threatening to shoot the unwilling recruit in the legs.

In a separate video, the official is seen struggling with the man on the roof for some time before eventually pushing him to the ground and tumbling off the sloping surface himself.

Two other draft enforcers quickly grab the man by the arms and legs and haul him away, apparently toward their vehicle waiting outside.

The Volyn Territorial Recruitment Center has confirmed that the press gang, together with police officers, was patrolling the area when they spotted a vehicle whose driver attempted to flee after seeing the officials, as quoted by local media.

The authorities claimed that the man, who climbed up to the roof, then supposedly asked the draft enforcers to rescue him due to a “fear of heights.”

According to the regional Territorial Recruitment Center, the man ended up admitting to being a draft dodger and was subjected to a medical checkup in short order.

Faced with mounting losses, widespread desertion and a dearth of willing recruits in the conflict with Russia, Ukrainian draft enforcement squads have increasingly resorted to coercion and brute force to fill the ranks.

The practice, commonly known as “busification,” involves military-age men being captured on the streets, at their places of work, as well as in residential areas, then taken to recruitment centers against their will and reportedly dispatched to the front almost immediately, after only cursory training.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Capitol Police had a camera feed showing the outside of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's, D-Calif., home in San Francisco during the attack on her husband Friday, but no one was monitoring it at the time, two sources familiar with the situation said.

The camera is one of about 1,800 at the Capitol complex and around the country that the Capitol Police have the ability to monitor. The Washington Post first reported no one was actively watching the camera feed when the break-in occurred early Friday morning.

Drone strikes hit both a major Russian petrochemical plant in the Samara region and a key oil pumping station in the Nizhny Novgorod region, triggering fires and raising fresh concerns over the vulnerability of Russia’s energy infrastructure, according to OSINT-community Exilenova+ on April 23.

Unmanned aerial vehicles struck the Novokuybyshevsk Petrochemical Company, a large industrial facility in the city of Novokuybyshevsk.

Images shared by residents showed at least one processing unit on fire following the attack.

Regional authorities later confirmed that drones had targeted an industrial site in the city. Preliminary analysis by Exilenova+ suggests that a unit involved in producing methyl tert-amyl ether (MTBE) may have been damaged.

The facility, part of the Rosneft structure, is one of the largest petrochemical producers in Russia and Eastern Europe.

It processes over one million tons of raw materials annually and manufactures a wide range of products, including liquefied gases, benzene, phenol, acetone, olefins, and fuel additives.

It is also the country’s only producer of synthetic ethanol and para-tert-butylphenol, making it a uniquely important asset within Russia’s industrial base.

In a separate strike the same morning, drones also hit the Gorky oil pumping station in the Nizhny Novgorod region, according to Exilenova+ and satellite data from NASA FIRMS. The facility is located near the settlement of Meshikha, close to the city of Kstovo.

Following the attack, a fire broke out at the site, with at least one storage tank reportedly engulfed in flames. Thick black smoke was visible from nearby населенных areas.

The Gorky station is a critical node in the Transneft–Upper Volga pipeline system, serving both as a main and intermediate pumping hub.

It plays a key role in transporting oil from Western Siberia through major pipeline routes, including the Surgut–Gorky–Polotsk line, supplying refineries in central Russia and supporting export flows.

Earlier, reports emerged that Russia was forced to slash its oil production in April due to a relentless wave of Ukrainian drone strikes on critical ports and refineries, alongside the prolonged shutdown of the Druzhba oil pipeline to Europe.

Output fell by an estimated 300,000 to 400,000 barrels per day from early-year averages. This drop—representing up to 600,000 bpd compared to late 2025 levels—marks the steepest monthly decline in Russian production since the COVID-19 pandemic.

RFK Jr. Tells Senate Glyphosate Causes Cancer

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told senators on April 21 that glyphosate, a key ingredient in herbicides like Roundup, causes cancer and that human consumption of the chemical should be minimized.

His comments came amid growing political and legal controversy over the chemical, which is widely used in agriculture. During a Senate Budget Committee hearing, Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) asked Kennedy whether the chemical caused cancer.

Without hesitation, Kennedy replied, “Yes.” Schatz also asked if the chemical was safe for human use.

“I mean, safe, or does it kill weeds? It kills weeds,” Kennedy said. “I would say it’s important to minimize consumption of glyphosate as much as possible.”

Schatz told Kennedy he was being “uncharacteristically diplomatic about glyphosate,” which Kennedy, a standard-bearer for the Make America Healthy Again movement, denied.

Kennedy helped secure a $289 million award from Monsanto in 2018 while representing a client who alleged Roundup caused him to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Now, Kennedy is the leading health official for an administration that is defending Monsanto in a Supreme Court case set for oral argument just days after the health secretary’s testimony.

That case, known as Monsanto v. Durnell, similarly involves a man alleging that Monsanto’s Roundup caused him to develop non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The Justice Department didn’t argue as much on glyphosate’s alleged health hazards as it did that the lower-court verdict against Monsanto was legally flawed.

President Donald Trump addressed the issue in February, signing an executive order that said glyphosate-based herbicides were critical to the nation’s economy and national security.

“Any major restrictions in access to glyphosate-based herbicides would result in economic losses for growers and make it untenable for them to meet growing food and feed demands,” his order reads.

“Ensuring an adequate supply of elemental phosphorus and glyphosate-based herbicides is thus crucial to the national security and defense, including food-supply security, which is essential to protecting the health and safety of Americans.”

Schatz told Kennedy he had many friends in Hawaii who supported the health secretary, but they were shocked when Kennedy put out a February statement in support of Trump’s executive order on glyphosate, which would also give immunity to manufacturers if Congress were to pass it into law.

“Pesticides and herbicides are toxic by design,” Kennedy wrote in a post on X. “Unfortunately, our agricultural system depends heavily on these chemicals.”

The ‘Videogate’ scandal simmered in the background until last week, when Black Cube, an Israeli private intelligence agency, admitted that it had recorded and edited the video. The company said that it had compiled the video on behalf of a private client – not a state actor – and that it “has cooperated with the Cypriot authorities and expresses confidence that they will establish the truth and bring those responsible to justice.”

What is Black Cube?

Founded in 2011 by “veterans of Israel’s elite intelligence units,” Black Cube describes itself as “the world’s leading human intelligence firm,” capable of finding “hard evidence otherwise impossible to obtain” in support of “high-profile litigations, arbitrations, and white-collar crime cases.”

The term ‘Human Intelligence’, or ‘HUMINT’, is key here. Unlike open-source intelligence (OSINT), which relies on uncovering publicly-available information, HUMINT is gathered through covert surveillance, interrogation, and the management of sources and informers through bribery, blackmail, or intimidation. It is the kind of illegal or quasi-legal tradecraft usually practiced by state intelligence agencies.

Black Cube co-founders Dan Zorella and Avi Yanus are veterans of this underworld. Zorella served in the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) military intelligence directorate, and Yanus was a strategic planning officer in the IDF. The company’s board is a who’s who of the Israeli intelligence and defense establishment, and includes:

Lebanon accuses Israel of war crimes after another journalist killed

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam says attacks on media workers have become an established pattern, not isolated incidents

Lebanon has accused Israel of war crimes after a reporter for a Lebanese newspaper was killed on Wednesday in a strike on a house in the southern village of al-Tiri, where she had taken cover after an earlier attack targeted the vehicle she was traveling in.

Amal Khalil, a reporter for Al-Akhbar, was killed in the strike and her colleague Zeinab Faraj seriously wounded. Rescuers were initially unable to recover Khalil’s body because Israeli fire forced them to halt their efforts for hours.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the attack amounted to a war crime, arguing that Israel’s strikes on journalists could no longer be dismissed as isolated incidents.

“Targeting journalists, obstructing access to them by relief teams, and even targeting their locations again after these teams arrive constitute clearly defined war crimes,” he wrote in a post on X. “Lebanon will spare no effort in pursuing these crimes before the competent international forums.”

Lebanese Information Minister Paul Morcos said the killing of journalists was “a crime and a flagrant violation of international and humanitarian law.” The attack came despite a much-touted ceasefire, with Israel still operating in occupied parts of southern Lebanon, keeping troops in an expanded security zone, barring many residents from returning, and reserving the right to fire on what it says are imminent threats.

The Israel Defense Forces denied targeting journalists and said the incident was under review. The IDF claimed that people in the vehicles posed an “imminent threat” to Israeli troops after crossing the unilaterally declared Forward Defense Line in the occupied part of Lebanon.

The killing is the latest in a string of attacks on media workers. On March 28, an Israeli strike on a clearly marked press car in southern Lebanon killed Al-Manar correspondent Ali Shoeib, Al-Mayadeen reporter Fatima Ftouni, and video journalist Mohammed Ftouni. Israel claimed Shoeib was a Hezbollah intelligence operative, but provided no evidence.

Al-Manar TV journalist Hussain Hamood was killed in an Israeli strike on Nabatieh on March 25, while Lebanese radio presenter Ghada Dayekh was killed when an Israeli strike hit her home in Tyre on April 8.

RT correspondent Steve Sweeney and cameraman Ali Rida Sbeity were also wounded on March 19 while filming near Al-Qasmiya Bridge in southern Lebanon. An Israeli aircraft fired at their filming position despite their visible press markings, and Sweeney later described the strike as a “deliberate, targeted attack.”

Khalil’s death brought the number of journalists killed in Lebanon this year to at least nine, according to AP. Lebanese authorities say more than 2,300 civilians have been killed since the latest escalation began, including at least 254 women and 168 children, after Israel launched its combat operations in Lebanon, where the militant group Hezbollah is based, amid the wider US-Israeli war against Iran.

The initiative, led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, introduced its standalone World ID app in public beta on April 17. The app separates identity management from the existing World App crypto wallet and is described as a tool to “verify with platforms and services, manage your authenticators, store credentials and control how your World ID is used.”

The rollout comes as the organization reports more than 18 million people across 160 countries have already been verified using its Orb devices, which scan a person’s iris to create a unique identifier.

Deployment of Orb devices is increasing, with additional coverage planned across New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. An “Orb-on-demand” service is also being introduced, allowing individuals to schedule iris scans at locations of their choosing.

This approach extends biometric collection into more varied settings. Greater accessibility may encourage uptake, though it also increases the number of environments where highly sensitive biological data is captured.

At a recent event, the organization described its broader ambition as embedding its verification tech across the internet, stating the goal is to get its “proof-of-human” system into “every website and app” on the open internet.

A wider push toward digital ID checks

The expansion aligns with a broader movement across the tech sector toward routine identity verification. Platforms are introducing checks framed around safety, fraud prevention, and authenticity, gradually normalizing the idea that access to services may require proof of identity rather than anonymous or pseudonymous participation.

World’s model places biometric verification at the forefront of this trend. By tying a persistent identifier to a person’s physical characteristics, the system enables repeated checks across different services without requiring separate verification processes each time.

This creates a form of continuity across platforms. While presented as a way to reduce bots and misuse, it also consolidates identity into a reusable credential that can follow individuals across contexts, limiting the ability to compartmentalize online activity.

Revenue model tied to identity verification

The company’s financial framing links this identity layer directly to monetization.

According to its own materials, World ID could increase average revenue per user by improving trust signals and conversion rates. A central proposal involves offering a “verified human” tier to advertisers, with higher pricing based on confirmed human impressions.

The company states that “advertisers whose conversions come from verified humans can better measure their marketing ROI, which justifies sustained or increased spend,” and that “an ad network that can prove its impressions reach real people will command the budgets.”
