Remember, Whitmer claimed she was making pandemic-era decisions on “science and data,” and the flopping fish of corporate media swallowed her asininity hook, line, and sinker.

Not me. I sued Whitmer and Nessel in 2021 for that supposed science and data. I won that case, just as I will win this one, and was shocked to learn there was no reliable death data. Nursing homes simply made up numbers to make their facilities look better than they were, and Whitmer dutifully defended it.

When I exposed the scandal, the Michigan House of Representatives ordered a full audit of the nursing home dead. The state Auditor General found the long-term facility toll to be 43% higher than what Whitmer was telling the public. It was as bad as Cuomo’s New York, maybe worse. To this day, Whitmer’s administration has not corrected the data.

What is “extremely rare” is the closure of an entire airport over a security issue, according to a former chief security officer at United Airlines.

Officials usually will try to take security measures to isolate the risk if a specific plane or airline is threatened rather than shut down the airport, said Rich Davis, now a senior security adviser at risk mitigation company International SOS.

Mexican officials question the explanation

Asked about the drone explanation provided by U.S. officials, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she had “no information about the use of drones on the border.” She noted that if U.S. authorities have more information, they should contact Mexico’s government.

Mexican defense and navy secretaries planned to talk with officials from U.S. Northern Command in a meeting Wednesday in Washington attended by several other countries, Sheinbaum told reporters.

Sheinbaum said the Mexican officials would “listen” in the meeting and her government would look into “the exact causes” of the closure.

El Paso is a hub of cross-border commerce alongside Ciudad Juárez. That Mexican city is home to about 1.5 million people, and some of its residents are accustomed to taking advantage of facilities, including airports, on the U.S. side of the border.

That easy access to the United States also has made Juarez, like other border cities, attractive to Mexico’s drug cartels seeking to safeguard their smuggling routes for drugs and migrants headed north and cash and guns moving to the south.

‘This was a major and unnecessary disruption’

El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson told reporters that he did not hear about the closure until after the alert was issued.

“Decisions made without notice and coordination puts lives at risk and creates unnecessary danger and confusion,” Johnson said. “This was a major and unnecessary disruption, one that has not occurred since 9/11.”

The airport describes itself as the gateway to west Texas, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico. Southwest, United, American and Delta are among the carriers that operate flights there.

A similar 10-day temporary flight restriction for special security reasons remained in place Wednesday around Santa Teresa, New Mexico, which is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) northwest of the El Paso airport.

FAA officials did not immediately explain why that restriction remained.

Sen. Ben Ray Lujan, a New Mexico Democrat, said in a statement that he was seeking answers from the FAA and the Trump administration “about why the airspace was closed in the first place without notifying appropriate officials, leaving travelers to deal with unnecessary chaos.”

Confusion for travelers

Travel plans on both sides of the border were disrupted.

María Aracelia was pushing two roller suitcases across the pedestrian bridge from Ciudad Juarez to El Paso on Wednesday morning. She had a round-trip flight to Illinois scheduled for the afternoon.

After receiving a text at 4 a.m. telling her about the 10-day closure, she scrambled to try to find other options, even how to get to another airport. Then came a notification that the El Paso airport had reopened.

“This is stressful, and there isn’t time to make so many changes, especially if you need to get back for work,” Aracelia said.

Trump DoJ antitrust chief Gail Slater steps down after serving less than a year

Abigail Slater, the head of the antitrust division of the U.S. Department of Justice, is stepping down effective immediately.

Slater made the announcement public via a post from her personal account on social media platform X on Thursday.

"It is with great sadness and abiding hope that I leave my role as AAG for Antitrust today," Slater wrote on X."It was indeed the honor of a lifetime to serve in this role."

Slater's exit comes amid one of the largest corporate merger dramas unraveling in the U.S.,in which media giants Paramount Skydance (PSKY) and Netflix (NFLX) are butting heads to get control of the coveted assets of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).

Her position in the Justice Department determined the outcome of cases involving mergers and acquisitions.

Slater's departure also comes just two days after her deputy in the DoJ antitrust unit, Mark Hamer, stepped downto rejoin his former law firm, Baker McKenzie.

She was appointed by President Donald Trump in March last year.Media reportssuggestedSlater was forced outof her position afterlosing the support of Vice President JD Vance and DoJ head Pam Bondi.

Reports also said some officials in the Trump administration thought Slater undermined pending cases due== to differences of opinion and had disobeyed leadership.

The Chicago based multinational law firm Baker McKenzie is laying off up to a thousand employeesas part of its pivot to embracing AI, the legalhub RollOnFriday reports.

In what might be an augury of how further AI related cuts could sweep other industries,it’s not the lawyers getting the axe, but instead hundreds of their support staff. These include “dozens of roles in London and Belfast,” and hundreds across functionsincluding know-how, research, marketing, and secretarial, according to the reporting.

The cuts,which could affect up to ten percent of its global workforce, or between 600 to 1,000 people, were conducted after the company“undertook a careful review” of its “business professionals functions,” a spokesperson told ROF, with AI explicitly mentioned as a factor in the decision.

“This review was aimed at rethinking the ways in which we work, including through our use of AI, introducing efficiencies, and investing in those roles that best serve our clients’ needs,” the spokesperson added.

The law firm’s reported layoffs come after Anthropic’s new Claude Cowork AI agentsparked a panicked sell off that sent the stock market plunging last week. Investors feared that Claude’s plugin for automating some legal tasks and paperwork could lead to layoffs and outmode the expensive software that legal firms and other white collar organizations use.

Perhaps the fate of Baker McKenzie’s support staff confirms all those worst fears. Or it could be a sign of something else that’s been dominating the discourse intech and finance circles recently: so-called “AI washing.”
