No contact for hours: Behind Netanyahu, IDF's failure to stop Hamas's Oct. 7 massacre

Enmity between the prime minister, defense minister, and the IDF chief prevented communication for hours as Hamas was murdering thousands and kidnapping hundreds in the early hours of Oct. 7.

When Hamas fired some 3,700 rockets, and its invasion force of around 5,600 men penetrated Israel's border at 119 different spots to take over a couple of dozen villages at 6:29 a.m. on October 7, Israel’s top officials went into shock.

While many of those same officials made a number of bold decisions over the course of the next two years, including against Iran, Hezbollah, and the Syrian Assad regime – and historians will need to weigh their accomplishments against their failures – all were drawn into the failure on October 7.

With Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and others publicizing selective aspects of what happened that morning, we can now exclusively reveal the puzzle of the interactions of three of the country's central characters at the time: Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi.

The most important new takeaway is that the three did not speak until nearly four hours into the war, by which point hundreds of Israeli hostages had already been taken, and hundreds of Israelis had been killed. Why they did not speak earlier is part of the story that follows and likely part of a basic dysfunction that went beyond politics, which no one wants to address.

Also, we will give a response of sorts from Amit Saar, the former IDF intelligence analysis chief from 2021 to April 2024, who died of cancer on January 1, 2026, and whom Netanyahu attacked overnight for "rebelling" against him, though when Saar died, the prime minister gave him high compliments.

No generals in the room as Hamas massacred thousands in early hours of Oct. 7

Classified video footage of the IDF high command “pit,” which we viewed, showed that on October 7, not a single general was in the room. The midlevel officer in charge and his deputies were yelling at each other as reports of invasions flooded in. They had no overall defense plan.

Even a full hour into Hamas's invasion, at 7:30 a.m., the IDF high command only knew about approximately 40 percent of the penetrations into Israel from Gaza.

As of 10:00 a.m., hundreds of Israelis were already dead or kidnapped, and yet the IDF high command was still only aware of some 60 percent of border penetrations.

The Israeli military's top commanders did not really start to manage the nation’s defense until about 1:00 p.m, which was also around the time Netanyahu's first video to the public came out.

By that time, Hamas and Islamic Jihad had taken the overwhelming majority of the hostages, and most Israeli victims at places near the Gaza border, like Kfar Aza, Nir Oz, Beeri, and the Nova Music Festival, had already been murdered.

None of the top three officials made live public appearances in the early days, with IDF Chief Spokesman Brig. Gen. Daniel Hagari is the only one to do so.

Gallant is the only top official who can say that even his staff did not receive any warning prior to the 6:29 a.m invasion.

Halevi knew most of the top three, though even he had a very incomplete picture. Between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., Halevi's bureau chief woke him up to give him initial updates about a possible Hamas border threat.

He left his bedroom for his home study and wrote a few notes to enhance his level of alertness. He wrote to himself, “We cannot just convince ourselves that this is nothing.”

But he and the entire intelligence and defense apparatus were convinced that at most, Hamas was planning one small penetration into one village to try to take a few hostages.

Only months into the war would IDF intelligence inform Halevi that it had intercepted Hamas's "Walls of Jericho" mass-invasion plan more than a year before, since mid-level officials had dismissed it as a fantasy.

What might Halevi have done differently had he known about the plan?

Maybe something more, but maybe nothing, given that all of Israel was convinced that Hamas was deterred.

AIPAC ads against pro-Israel New Jersey candidate open to conditions for US aid backfires

“We are going to have a focus on stopping candidates who are detractors of Israel or who want to put conditions on aid,” Patrick Dorton, a spokesperson for the United Democracy Project, said.

If AIPAC has any regrets about pouring more than $2 million into opposing a candidate who calls himself pro-Israel - and ultimately lost to an anti-Israel opponent - it isn’t saying so. In fact, the pro-Israel group’s affiliated super PAC suggests it would do it again.

“We are going to have a focus on stopping candidates who are detractors of Israel or who want to put conditions on aid,” Patrick Dorton, a spokesperson for the United Democracy Project, said in an interview.

The target of the UDP’s recent spending was Tom Malinowski, a former congressman running in a special election in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, who conceded on Tuesday morning. Malinowski, who calls himself pro-Israel and has been endorsed by the liberal Zionist organization J Street, has said he’d be open to placing conditions on some US aid to Israel.

AIPAC pummeled Malinowski with $2.3 million in negative ads - but not about Israel. Instead, the ads tarred him from a progressive angle - one emphasized his vote on a 2019 bill that included increased funding for ICE, the immigration enforcement agency.

In a statement, Malinowski congratulated the winning candidate, Analilia Mejia, and credited her for “running a positive campaign and inspiring so many voters on Election Day.”

A victory for Ben Gamla could redraw the line separating church and state, establishing the first school of its kind nationwide and opening the possibility for more taxpayer-funded religious schools.

A Jewish group is preparing to sue to overturn a ban on publicly funded religious charter schools in Oklahoma, after a state board unanimously rejected its proposal on Monday.

The Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board’s decision blocked an application from the National Ben Gamla Jewish Charter School Foundation to open a statewide virtual Jewish school serving grades K-12 beginning next school year.

Ben Gamla’s legal team, led by Becket, a prominent nonprofit religious liberty law firm, said the rejection violates the Constitution’s Free Exercise clause and announced plans to file suit in federal court. In a statement, Becket attorney Eric Baxter criticized Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond, who has argued that publicly funded religious charter schools are unconstitutional.

“Attorney General Drummond’s attack on religious schools contradicts the Constitution,” Baxter said. “His actions have hung a no-religious-need-apply sign on the state’s charter school program. We’ll soon ask a federal court to protect Ben Gamla’s freedom to serve Sooner families, a right that every other qualified charter school enjoys.”

A U.S. Olympic curler has become the latest in a trend of American athletes to use the Winter Olympics as a platform to blast President Trump’s policies at home.

Rich Ruohonen, 54, a member of the U.S. Olympic curling teamand a native of Minnesota, used a considerable chunk of his time in front of reporters on Tuesday to speak out against the efforts of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in his home state to rid the streets of criminal illegals.

“I’d like to say I’m proud to be here to represent Team USA, and to represent our country. But we’d be remiss if we didn’t at least mention what’s going on in Minnesota,” said Ruohonen, a personal injury lawyer.

“What a tough time it’s been for everybody. This stuff is happening right around where we live,” he added.

ICE agents and other federal agents have been working in and around Minneapolis in an effort to arrest criminal illegal aliens, many of them wanted for serious felony offenses.

The work of the agents has been hindered by throngs of anti-ICE agitators who have, on several occasions, attempted to interfere with the work of the agents violently.

“I am a lawyer, as you know. We have a constitution, and it allows us freedom of speech,” Ruohonen continued. “It protects us from unreasonable searches and seizures. And makes it that we have to have probable cause to be pulled over.What’s happening in Minnesota is wrong. There’s no shades of grey. It’s clear.”

Ruohonen went on to praise the anti-ICE activistswho are demonstrating against the federal agents.“ I really love what’s been happening there now. With people coming out, showing the love, the compassion, the integrity and respect for others that they don’t know, and helping them out,” he said.

“We love Minnesota for that … We love our country. We’re playing for the U.S. We’re playing for each other, we’re playing for our family and our friends that sacrificed so much to get here today.”

US sanctions individuals, firms over links to Iran-backed Hezbollah

The United States on Tuesday imposed fresh sanctions targeting individuals, companies and vessels accused of supporting Iran-backed Hezbollah of Lebanon, the Treasury Department said.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) added two individuals and five entities to its Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list under counterterrorism authorities, citing their alleged links to Hezbollah’s financial and commercial networks.

Among those designated was Russian national Andrey Viktorovich Borisov and Lebanese national Mohamed Nayef Maged who is linked to Al-Qard al-Hassan Association, a financial institution affiliated with Hezbollah that the United States has previously designated for facilitating the group’s financial activities.

In addition to the two individuals, OFAC designated several companies across multiple jurisdictions that it said are tied to Hezbollah.

Brilliance Maritime Ventures S.A., registered in Panama in 2023, was added to the SDN list for its alleged links to Hezbollah. The designation also covers the bulk carrier BRILLIANCE, a Panama-flagged vessel built in 1999 and linked to the company.

In Lebanon, JOOD SARL, also known as “JUD,” was designated. The company, established in 2025 and registered in Chiyah, Baabda, is listed as operating in the wholesale trade of jewelry, watches and precious metals. OFAC said it is linked to Hezbollah.

Two Turkey-based firms were also sanctioned: Platinum Group International Dis Ticaret Limited Sirketi, registered in Istanbul in 2024, and Sea Surf Shipping Limited, based in Tuzla, Istanbul. Both were identified as subject to secondary sanctions for their alleged connections to Hezbollah.

The designation of Sea Surf Shipping Limited was accompanied by the listing of the general cargo vessel LARA, flagged in St. Kitts & Nevis and built in 2000, which OFAC said is linked to the company.
