DOE contends that portions of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator face an emergency situation, citing studies by the grid operator and the results of recent capacity auctions that indicate tightening supply conditions.

According to Global News one of the Toronto men recently charged in connection with alleged hate- and extremism-motivated crimes targeting women and members of the Jewish community had been denied refugee status more than seven years ago, according to court and immigration records.

Federal court documents show that Osman Azizov, an Azerbaijani citizen, entered Canada in 2017 with his parents after crossing the US-Canada border near Lacolle, Quebec, between official ports of entry. The family filed refugee claims shortly after arriving.

The Immigration and Refugee Board rejected the family’s asylum application in 2018, citing credibility concerns.

Their appeal was denied by the Refugee Appeal Division in early 2019, and the Federal Court declined to review the case later that year.

There is no publicly available record explaining how Azizov remained in Canada following the unsuccessful refugee claim.

Azizov was living in Toronto at the time of his arrest in August 2025. Police later announced that he had been charged in connection with multiple attempted kidnappings that investigators allege were motivated by hate and extremism. The charges were publicly disclosed on Dec. 19. Continue…

'Prime Minister Mark Carney says he spoke with European leaders earlier today about the latest efforts to secure a negotiated settlement to the Russia-Ukraine War.

“We support the efforts of President Trump and President Zelenskyy to reach a negotiated settlement and we stand ready to provide robust security guarantees for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” Carney said in a Dec. 30 social media post.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) did not provide additional details about the meeting.

Carney met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Dec. 27 in Halifax, where the prime minister announced an additional $2.5 billion in “economic assistance” for Ukraine.

Since February 2022, Canada has committed nearly $22 billion in support to Ukraine, including more than $6.5 billion in military assistance. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the funding is intended to facilitate additional lending of $8.4 billion to Ukraine through the International Monetary Fund and to serve as a loan guarantee of up to $322 million for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, aimed at supporting Ukraine’s gas imports and energy sector.

A statement from the Iranian foreign ministry said the decision was made in response to Ottawa’s classification of the IRGC as a terrorist organization last summer, saying Canada’s move was “in contravention of the fundamental principles of international law.”

The Dec. 30 statement shared on X highlights the 2019 law passed by Iran after the United States classified the IRGC as a terrorist entity in April of that year. The law allows Tehran to take reciprocal action against countries that support the position adopted by the White House.

The statement said Iran considers the Royal Canadian Navy to fall within the scope of this law and, “within the framework of reciprocal action, hereby designates and declares it as a terrorist organization.” The statement did not list what repercussions, if any, would come with the designation.

Neither the Prime Minister’s Office nor Global Affairs Canada responded to a request for comment on Iran’s decision before publication time.

CRA Owed $10 Billion From COVID-Related Benefits Sent to Ineligible Canadians

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) said it is attempting to recover $10 billion in benefits given to Canadians who were later found to be ineligible for the programs upon further review.

In a statement to The Epoch Times, the agency said around $14 billion was given to individuals that did not qualify for the programs like the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) or Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB).'The CRA began informing them that payment was due back in 2022, and since then it has recovered around $4 billion.

The CRA said it is “proud of the important role it played in delivering COVID-19 benefits to Canadians in their time of need,” by providing emergency benefits “extremely quickly to millions of Canadians.”

“Individuals were required to confirm they met the program eligibility criteria and were made aware that the CRA might verify this information at a later date,” the agency said. Continue…

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has stopped mandating health care providers report the immunization status of patients.

Kennedy decided to stop requiring doctors to list vaccinations children have received, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) said in a Dec. 30, 2025, letter to state health officials.

Doctors participating in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program were previously required to report how many children received specific vaccines by their second birthday, and other shots by the time they turn 14 years old.

Kennedy also eliminated a requirement that doctors report the immunization status of pregnant women, according to the notice.

“Government bureaucracies should never coerce doctors or families into accepting vaccines or penalize physicians for respecting patient choice. That practice ends now,” Kennedy, head of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), of which CMS is a part, said in a post on X. “Under the Trump administration, HHS will protect informed consent, respect religious liberty, and uphold medical freedom.”

Federal law requires that doctors report certain measures while caring for the approximately 78 million people on Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and that states convey that data to CMS. The reporting was voluntary when first implemented. It began being mandated in fiscal year 2024.

CMS did not respond to a request for comment. In the letter, the agency noted that Kennedy has authority under the law to make changes to the required measures “to improve and strengthen” the reporting requirements, and that pursuant to that authority, CMS was removing the immunization reporting requirements. Russia responds to ‘terrorist attacks’ by Kiev – MOD

The Russian military has conducted one large-scale and six group strikes against drone production facilities, energy infrastructure, and other military-related targets inside Ukraine over the past week, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.

The bombardment was in response to “Ukraine’s terrorist attacks on civilian targets in Russia,” the ministry said in a statement on Friday.

High-precision munitions, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, were utilized during the strikes, it added.

The targets of the Russian attacks included production facilities for Ukrainian long-range drones and the sites from where they are being launched, the statement read.

Other enterprises of the country’s defense industrial complex and the energy infrastructure that powers them were hit as well, it said.

Did you know that Meta has been walking around Ottawa saying that you and countless other Canadian parents are begging for your elected Member of Parliament to pass digital “safety laws”?

Proposed laws that would mandate you to verify your identity every time you want to download an app to your smartphone or your child’s iPad?

Meta’s federal government lobbyists and their very own Policy Director for Canada, Rachel Curran, have done just that.

This foreign-owned, American big tech corporation has been waving around a statistic claiming that “83% of parents” support mandatory age verification at the App Store level.

But as I dug into the details, I uncovered the truth they aren’t telling you:

1. There is no way to check if Meta polled actual “Canadians”. The fine print shows they didn’t survey a broad group of citizens. Instead, they surveyed 2,533 “Canadian residents” on an online panel back in October. There is no clear definition of who Meta considered to be a “Canadian resident”.

2. Meta paid for the survey themselves. They were directly funding the result they wanted to see so they could point to you as the person who wanted legislation to implement digital age-verification checks.

Without having access to review the data and questions they asked for yourself, it is easy to assume Meta could have just bought the answer they wanted so they could use us as an excuse to rewrite our laws.

So this leads me to ask you: Did you ask Facebook to parent your children?

Because I know they certainly didn’t ask me. And I have a sneaking feeling Meta did not ask you either.

Sign the petition and let Rachel Curran and her bosses at Meta you to stop using you as an excuse to push for digital surveillance upon you, your kids, and your friends.

Meta is betting you haven’t notice.

Blacklock's Reporter says in a submission to the Commons human resources committee, the Air Line Pilots Association International said the government’s growing reliance on strike bans has changed employer behaviour and weakened negotiations across federally regulated sectors.

“Government intervention to end labour disputes in the federal sector has now become commonplace,” wrote the association, which represents 13,500 Canadian pilots.

“As a result, employers now expect the government to intervene and are no longer interested in bargaining in good faith.”

The committee is examining cabinet’s unprecedented use of Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code, a provision that allows the labour minister to take any steps deemed necessary to “maintain or secure industrial peace.” Hajdu and her predecessor invoked the clause eight times over a 15-month period to end strikes and impose binding arbitration. The Coalition of the Willing is a group of approximately 35 nations that have pledged or have already provided increased political, military, and security support to Ukraine in defending itself against Russia and asserting its sovereignty.

“Canada is working relentlessly with our allies to secure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” Carney said in a Jan. 2 statement. “We must deter and fortify – with robust security guarantees and by ensuring Ukraine can rebuild, recover, and create the foundations of true prosperity.”

Canada has been one of the biggest per capita financial contributors to Ukraine’s recovery. Ottawa has committed $23.5 billion in aid to Ukraine since 2022, including $12 billion in direct financial support. Canada announced $2.5 billion in financing and loan guarantees when Carney met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Halifax last weekend.

SpaceX will move about 4,400 Starlink satellites to a lower orbit this year to better control risks and improve safety, the company announced Friday.

Michael Nicholls, vice president of Starlink engineering, posted the news on X, saying the adjustment would increase space safety in several ways.

Elon Musk’s Starlink system contributes more than 9,000 satellites to an increasingly crowded Earth orbit. Of those in the Starlink system, only two are not functioning, according to Nicholls.

Nicholls also noted that the atmospheric changes brought on by solar activity can affect satellite operations. An active sun causes a thicker atmosphere, which can bring spacecraft down faster.

Low solar activity, such as during the solar minimum after 2030, can have an opposite effect.

The number of debris objects and planned satellite constellations at the lower orbit—below 500 kilometers from Earth—is smaller, which reduces the likelihood of collision, Nicholls stated.

If a satellite does fail in orbit, Starlink wants to remove it as quickly as possible, improving the safety of the rest of the satellite constellation, Nicholls said.

Another dead body was discovered at Walt Disney World on Friday night, marking the sixth time a body has been found at the amusement park property in just the last few months.

The body was found around 9 pm Friday at Disney Springs, the shopping and entertainment district at the resort that does not require park admission or paid parking. Officials said the death is believed to be a suicide, though details about the condition of the body have been limited.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office told News 6 that deputies responded to the Disney Springs Orange Garage on East Buena Vista Drive, where the body was located.

“This incident is being investigated as a possible suicide. We have no additional information to release and will have no further updates this weekend,” the office said in a statement.

The death is the first reported at Disney World in 2026, but the sixth overall since October. On October 14, a 31-year-old was found dead in an apparent suicide. On October 21, a man in his 60s was discovered on a trail after suffering from a preexisting medical condition. On October 23, a 28-year-old died after jumping from the 12th floor of a Disney hotel.

In November, a woman in her 40s was found dead at Disney’s Pop Century Resort. On November 8, another body was discovered at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa in Lake Buena Vista.

A major plank in the Trump administration's case for military intervention in Venezuela is looking thinner today, as the Department of Justice has retreated from the notion that captured President Nicolas Maduro was the head of an organized drug cartel called Cartel de los Soles. The DOJ now says the term "Cartel de los Soles" is merely descriptive of a "culture of corruption" fueled by the illegal drug trade.

This isn't semantics: Both the Treasury and State Departments had officially designated the non-existent group as a terrorist organization. The latest development seems to at least partially confirm doubts raised by outside observers and lend credence to denials by the Venezuelan government. In November, the country's foreign minister said he "absolutely rejects the new and ridiculous fabrication" by which Secretary of State Marco Rubio had "designated the non-existent Cartel de los Soles as a terrorist organization."

The retreat from the idea that Cartel de los Soles is an actual organization was apparent in the DOJ's filing of a superseding (updated) indictment. The previous indictment referred to the supposed cartel 32 times, naming Maduro as its chief. The new one only mentions the term twice, and says it's only descriptive of a "patronage system" and a "culture of corruption" propelled by drug money. That's consistent with the fact that the DEA's annual National Drug Threat Assessment has never mentioned any "Cartel de los Soles" in its cataloguing of major traffickers. Continue…

In the first case, a group calling itself Kazu announced it had obtained records from the Manage My Health (MMH) website, an online portal that connects patients with doctors and healthcare providers and allows them to access health information, book appointments, and order repeat prescriptions.

The website collects and manages sensitive information about patients.

Some released samples by the hacker reportedly included information about patients’ conditions, medical test results, clinical notes, vaccination records, medical photographs and personal identification details.

Initially, the hackers demanded a $60,000 ransom to stop them from releasing the more than 400,000 files online by Jan. 15, 2026.

However, on Jan. 4, the group said on its Telegram channel that it had brought forward the payment deadline to Jan. 6, citing MMH’s quick response to the hack and an alleged lack of concern for patients’ data.

“Their ignorance of our emails and messages, along with their failure to acknowledge users or explain exactly what happened, is the main issue,” the group Kazu wrote on Telegram.

“Many MMH users have been asking the company for an explanation, but they’ve either ignored them or responded with vague statements.

“That’s why we decided to reduce the deadline and put pressure on the company.” Continue…

“There’s basic principles here, which is self-determination of nations, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and then there [are] approaches that we have as partners to what we’re trying to accomplish,” Carney said. “As NATO, we can provide security for all of NATO, Greenland included.”

Bostock pleaded guilty to selling drugs between 2016 and 2024 while on duty as a uniformed police officer, in the parking lots of police stations and from his police vehicle, according to an agreed statement of facts read in the courtroom.

Crown attorney Janna Hyman told the court the drugs sold by Bostock were for personal use and he was paid for the drugs in a mix of cash, bartered items, and favours.

Bostock had worked with the Winnipeg Police Service for 22 years before pleading guilty in November to a number of other offences.

Serrano was arrested on Nov. 7 during a joint operation conducted by the SQ, Spanish authorities and Interpol. He will remain in custody pending extradition proceedings aimed at returning him to Canada to face charges of fraud, identity theft, trafficking in identity information and using computer data to commit mischief.

Serrano’s arrest came 17 months after the SQ tracked down five suspects in connection with the massive data breach that occurred at Desjardins in 2019, which saw the theft and sale of personal information of 9.7 million members.

It noted that "A US official also said the call lasted about an hour, which is unusually long for a call between Mr. Trump and another leader." The Colombian side had a similarly positive assessment, with the Foreign Ministry calling it a "good meeting".

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Hungary would not leave the European Union, which instead would "fall apart on its own" due to "leadership chaos" and said Brussels aimed to cut Hungary off from Russian energy supplies during a press conference on Monday.

As EuroNews reports, Orbán rejected the possibility of Hungary leaving the EU, saying the country lacked the size to make such a decision sensible. However, he stressed Hungary's future lay within the bloc and NATO but with "a sovereign foreign policy and economic policy". He said: "EU membership is an important opportunity, but if we were to get stuck in this single bloc, we would drink the juice. It makes sense to have the best possible relations with all blocs, including America, Russia, China, the Arab world and the Turkish world."

Orbán has clashed repeatedly with Brussels over rule of law concerns, blocked EU support to Ukraine and maintained ties with Moscow despite all his European peers blacklisting Putin. In return, the EU has withheld billions of euros in funding for what it claims is "democratic backsliding" in Hungary.
