Trump Opens 2026 With Three Days of Airstrikes in Somalia

According to AFRICOM, the US bombed an ISIS affiliate in Puntland on January 1, January 2, and January 3

The US began the New Year with three straight days of airstrikes in Somalia, according to a press release from US Africa Command, as the Trump administration appears poised to continue its record-shattering bombing campaign in the country throughout 2026.

AFRICOM said in a press release on Monday that its forces launched airstrikes against the ISIS affiliate in Somalia’s northeastern Puntland region on January 1, January 2, and January 3. It’s unclear how many strikes were conducted each day, but the attacks bring the total for US airstrikes in Somalia this year to a bare minimum of three.

AFRICOM said the strikes were launched about 43 miles to the southeast of the Gulf of Aden port city of Bossasso and offered no other details about the attacks as it stopped sharing casualty estimates and assessments on potential civilian harm early last year. “Specific detail about units and assets will not be released to ensure continued operations security,” the command said.

The Puntland Counter-Terrorism Operations has not released a statement on its operations in recent days. The US-backed force occasionally details its operations or releases images of the bodies of dead people they claim are ISIS fighters they killed.

The Puntland forces are under the control of the local Puntland government, which withdrew from the federal system in 2024. The US also continues to back the Mogadishu-based Federal Government by launching airstrikes against al-Shabaab in southern Somalia. The most recent confirmed US strike targeting al-Shabaab was conducted on December 29, though according to Somali media, US forces took part in a helicopter raid in southern Somalia on Sunday.

According to Antiwar.com’s count, the US launched at least 128 airstrikes in Somalia in 2025, more than double the previous annual record of 63, which President Trump set in his first term in 2019. According to New America, an organization that tracks the air war, the airstrikes launched in 2025 are more than were conducted in Somalia during the administrations of Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush combined. Despite the unprecedented bombing campaign, the US air war in Somalia receives virtually no media coverage in the US.

Gavin Newsom unveiled $101 million in funding Tuesday for “multifamily low-income housing development” that will “contribute to a more equitable and resilient Los Angeles." The priority is for “geographic proximity to the fire perimeters of the Eaton, Hughes, and Palisades fires.”

Earlier this year, The Center Square broke news that a local Los Angeles ordinance modeled on current California state laws require fire-destroyed rent-protected housing — which includes all apartments in the Pacific Palisades built before October 1978 — be replaced with low-income housing. Because the affordability requirements use city-level income data, not more local incomes, definitions for “low” and “very low” income housing reflect much lower incomes than the norm for the affluent Palisades community.

For [Paul Singer's] activist hedge fund Elliott Investment Management, Nicolás Maduro's swift exit comes at an auspicious time.

A U.S. judge in November backed a roughly $6 billion bid by Elliott for Citgo Petroleum, the refining firm owned by Venezuela's state-run company Petróleos de Venezuela, known as PdVSA, in a forced sale to satisfy creditors. Citgo, based in Houston, owns a U.S. network of refineries, pipelines and terminals that some analysts have said could be worth between $11 billion and $13 billion.

The deal was controversial in Venezuela. Maduro's government denounced the proposed sale as fraudulent. The board recognized by the U.S. government as the legitimate overseer of PdVSA's overseas oil assets vowed to fight to keep Citgo under Venezuelan control.

Less than two months after receiving the judge's endorsement, Elliott is looking at a more favorable—albeit chaotic—landscape. Maduro is being held in a New York jail. President Trump has sidelined the opposition, accused Venezuela of stealing American crude and said U.S. firms would be strongly involved in its oil industry.

Now, Elliott appears poised to reap the rewards of owning Venezuela's most valuable foreign oil asset. The regime change could lead to an increase in Venezuelan oil production, which would likely provide cheap feedstock to Citgo's Gulf Coast refineries and increase the company's value, analysts and refining experts said.

"Maduro is out, so a lot of the threat is out," said Jay Auslander, a litigator who represents sovereign interests and private-equity funds. "It looks like a potentially quite good deal that remains high risk."

Elliott isn't in the clear yet. The hedge fund still needs approval from the Treasury Department to conclude the deal. Plus, PdVSA and Venezuela have appealed the judicial sale.

Nestle has issued a global recall of some baby formula products over concerns they contain a toxin which can cause food poisoning.

The food and drink giant said specific batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula were not safe to be fed to babies.

The batches were sold across the world, Nestle said, and they potentially contain cereulide, which can trigger nausea and vomiting when consumed.

The company said there had been no confirmed reports of illness associated with the products, but was recalling them "out of an abundance of caution".

"The safety and wellbeing of babies is our absolute priority," Nestle said. "We sincerely apologise for any concern or inconvenience caused to parents, caregivers, and customers."

The company confirmed to the BBC that the recall was global. Affected products were sold in several European countries, including France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy and Sweden.

It stressed that all other Nestle products and batches of the same products that have not been recalled are safe to consume.

Nestle promised refunds for customers and said the problem was caused by an ingredient provided by one of its suppliers.

Nestle France said it was carrying out a "preventive and voluntary recall" of certain batches of its Guigoz and Nidal infant formulas.

In Germany, the formula products are called Beba and Alfamino.

Batch numbers of the affected products in the UK can be found on Nestle's UK website, external, or through food.gov.uk, external.

Customers are advised to look for the corresponding code on the base of the tin or box for powdered formulas or the base of the outer box and on the side or top of the container for ready-to-feed formulas.

OPINION: I know nothing of AI. I can barely even spell it. But I am planning to sue it.

Apparently AI feeds on books. It seizes them from online shadow libraries – whatever they might be – and then ingests them in the manner of an octopus wrapping itself around a hermit crab. And just as the octopus doesn’t compensate the crab for sucking it out of its shell and eating it, so AI’s proprietors don’t pay authors for sucking the words from their pages and learning from them. All of which is exactly as you’d expect from a rapacious new technology.

But this week I got an email from an American law firm. It seems people in charge of AI may have fed it one of my books.

Would I like to sue the? Or rather would I like the American law firm to sue them on my behalf? There would be no cost to me unless we happened to win in which case the law firm would take contingency fee of 35%. WasI up for it?

For several years, the UAP Disclosure Act has failed to become law despite overwhelming bipartisan support.

A new report from Liberation Times, published on January 3rd, 2026, is now pointing directly at Senator Mitch McConnell and his chief of staff Terry Carmack as central figures in blocking the legislation.

According to Liberation Times, sources identify Carmack as the person who pushed to have the UAP Disclosure Act stripped from the fiscal year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act.

One source told the outlet that McConnell has always worked against disclosure, calling him the number one villain with Terry being number two.

This is not the first time McConnell has been blamed. Back in 2023, attorney Daniel Sheehan publicly accused five Republicans of blocking the UAPDA, including McConnell along with Senators Roger Wicker and Representatives Mike Turner, Mike Rogers, and Mike Johnson.

Sheehan famously stated that 98 percent of Congress supported the bill and it was just these five individuals holding it up.

The financial connections are worth noting. According to data from Open Secrets, Congressman Mike Turner received over $174,000 from miscellaneous defense contributors and over $80,000 from defense aerospace during the 2023–2024 cycle.

Congressman Mike Rogers was the largest recipient of defense sector funding during that election cycle, collecting over $400,000 from defense contractors.

Why does this matter? The UAPDA includes an eminent domain provision that would require any private company holding materials of unknown or non-human origin to surrender them to the government.

Defense contractors and aerospace companies would have a clear interest in ensuring that never happens.

However, just weeks before the Liberation Times report, Congressman Eric Burlison suggested the opposition was coming not from senators but from Senate Appropriations Committee staff protecting their turf.

In an interview with journalist Matt Laslo from Ask a Pol, Burlison stated he was not even aware if it was the members blocking the bill or just their staff.

The answer may be both. Staff in Washington often act on behalf of their bosses, protecting interests and jurisdictional territory. Whether McConnell is actively directing this or his staff is doing it independently, the result remains the same.

Despite setbacks, Burlison remains committed. According to his interview on the Total Disclosure Podcast, whistleblower David Grusch has been extremely helpful in navigating the intelligence community and writing interrogative letters to agencies and private companies.

With Grusch on staff, new whistleblowers potentially coming forward, and a refined strategy for 2026, the fight for UAP transparency continues.
