Why is the DOJ Downgrading Felony Charges Against Anti-ICE Rioters?

Federal prosecutors in Minnesota have quietly downgraded felony charges against at least half of the 16 anti-ICE agitators arrested last week for allegedly assaulting or interfering with federal agents during immigration enforcement operations. While Attorney General Pam Bondi pledged to charge violent protestors under 18 U.S.C. § 111, which establishes a felony crime for anyone who “forcibly assaults, resists, opposes, impedes, intimidates or interferes” with government officials carrying out their duties, prosecutors have reduced many of the cases to lower-level misdemeanors.

Notably, Bondi herself traveled to Minnesota last week for the filing of the felony charges against the 16 anti-ICE protestors, posting at the time on X (formerly Twitter), “I am on the ground in Minneapolis today. Federal agents have arrested 16 Minnesota rioters for allegedly assaulting federal law enforcement — people who have been resisting and impeding our federal law enforcement agents.”

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: NOTHING will stop President Trump and this Department of Justice from enforcing the law,” she added.

While the DOJ has struggled in some more liberal jurisdictions to secure grand jury indictments carrying significant penalties against violent leftist agitators, the direct decision by federal prosecutors to downgrade charges appears to be a more recent development.One of the Minnesota cases, against Gillian Etherington, was reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor this past Tuesday without explanation. Last week, the DOJ alleged that Etherington “rammed her car into a United States Border Patrol vehicle and drove away,” with Border Patrol engaging in a pursuit before she proceeded to “drive into oncoming traffic” and strike “an unmarked law enforcement vehicle near a high school,” and even then continued to resist arrest.

In another instance, the DOJ dropped felony charges against Emily Baierl to misdemeanors despite Baierl having bitten the finger of a federal law enforcement agent during a demonstration after the death of Alex Pretti. While Baierl’s case is separate from the 16 filed last week, the downgrading of charges despite the clear instance of physical assault is puzzling.

However, one reason for the DOJ’s decision may be a contention raised by attorneys for a number of the defendants that Bondi’s aggressive public media campaign surrounding the arrests—including the release of photos and videos of defendants before trial—could violate internal department policies and risk prejudicing cases.

Greece: 313 Arrested in University Raid After Mob Firebombed Police

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) – Authorities in Greece on Saturday detained 313 people in a raid on the university campus of the country’s second-largest city, Thessaloniki, after riot police were attacked by mobs of people hurling more than 100 Molotov cocktails.

Greek police said roving groups of people wearing hoods emerged from the campus of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the predawn hours Saturday to attack a squad of riot police. The unit is usually deployed some distance from the campus to quell any disturbances after all-night parties that take place on university grounds.

Police said all 313 people were released without being charged.

Such attacks against riot police near the university campus are not uncommon but it’s the first time that so many people were detained after such a clash during which an unusually high number of firebombs was used.

Riot police used tear gas and stun grenades to beat back the attackers. One officer was taken to a military hospital for burns to his face and leg while a 21-year-old civilian was treated for respiratory problems, police said.

The university said in a statement that off-campus “extremists” in conjunction with some individuals from within university grounds had committed the attacks. They said an investigation is underway to determine if any students had taken part. They added that no permission had been granted for any party to take place on university grounds.

China Bombshell: Patel says Biden-era FBI ‘buried’ truth about CCP’s ties to biolab on US soil

FBI boss raises concerns Biden-era bureau may have 'buried' truth about Chinese Communist Party ties to dangerous biolabs on U.S. soil, cites 40% increase in Chinese espionage arrests.

FBI Director Kash Patel says his agency has resumed an aggressive counterintelligence offensive against China and its Communist Party (CCP) that had been sidelined during the Biden presidency but is concerned the prior administration may have "buried" the truth about dangerous biolabs on U.S. soil tied to Beijing.

“This FBI, under this leadership, has prioritized the threat against it by the CCP against us, and we've taken swift action,” Patel said Friday in an interview with the Just the News, No Noise television show that focused on China’s threat to U.S. national security and the bureau’s efforts to handle the Chinese Communist Party.

The FBI boss said the renewed efforts have already resulted in a 40% increase in Chinese espionage arrests in the first year of the second Trump administration.

“What we did in the last year with President Trump and the attorney general and the Department of Justice is reprioritize our dynamic threat landscape, going after and disrupting and looking after the criminal activity from the CCP,” he explained.

Just the News reported this week that an illegal biolab in California searched by local, state, and federal authorities in 2023 and a separate hazardous lab inside a Las Vegas garage raided by the FBI over the weekend are both tied to a Chinese national currently awaiting trial for fraud, false statements, and adulteration of medical devices, according to court filings, police officials and members of Congress.

Just the News also reported on findings by the conservative American Accountability Foundation that raised concerns that at least 20 Chinese scientists ensconced inside American academia and at cutting-edge U.S. labs appear to be members of the CCP, are affiliated with Chinese projects aimed at stealing U.S. technology, or are involved with universities or companies tied to the People’s Liberation Army and Beijing's defense sector.

Former IDF chief asks state comptroller to allow review of full meeting minutes, accusing premier of publishing partial, misleading account of decisions made before Hamas attacks

Former IDF chief of staff and ex-Knesset member Gadi Eisenkot wrote a letter to State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman on Friday, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of submitting a “fabricated defense” in response to the comptroller’s investigation into the failures surrounding Hamas’s October 7, 2023, onslaught.

On Thursday night, Netanyahu released the full 55-page document of his answers given to the state comptroller as part of the ombudsman’s investigation into the October 7, Hamas-led atrocities, pinning the failure to prevent the onslaught on political rivals and security chiefs while presenting himself in a positive light and deflecting his responsibility for the attack.

Netanyahu earlier in the day presented lawmakers on the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee with materials he had previously submitted to the state comptroller from the years preceding the October 7 attack, the most devastating in Israel’s history and the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

The prime minister has the authority, subject to proper procedure and legal challenge, to release and redact such materials.

In his answers to Englman, Netanyahu sought to build the case, with partial, curated quotes from cabinet protocols, that he had repeatedly pushed for assassinating Hamas leaders, but security chiefs consistently argued against the idea.

That assertion contradicted reports that he actually rejected assassinating then-Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on several occasions.

Subsequently, Eisenkot charged in the letter to Englman that Netanyahu “constructed and published a fabricated defense adapted to his needs from confidential minutes, while abusing his exclusive authority to see and publish minutes from sensitive meetings.”

“The situation in which one of the main responsible parties, if not the main and foremost one, can publish misleading and false statements and gain an advantage over all the other witnesses, is unacceptable,” continued Eisenkot, who, since leaving Benny Gantz’ National Unity party, has formed his own political party to run in elections later this year.

Continuing, Eisenkot accused Netanyahu of using secretive documents deliberately in an election year “out of a desire to improve his image, distance himself from blame and harm the other candidates facing him.”

Eisenkot requested that the State Comptroller’s Office allow the relevant people to review the full minutes of the meetings referenced by the premier in his “partial and manipulative” response, and told Englman that he will be happy to “set the record straight” regarding his own actions during his time as IDF chief.

Credit Suisse had many more bank accounts with Nazi ties than previously known, investigation finds

A UBS audit discovered 890 potentially nazi-linked accounts, as well as support for escaping Nazis.

The financial services company Credit Suisse had hundreds more bank accounts with Nazi ties than it had previously revealed, a new investigation reported this week.

The findings were discovered during an audit by independent investigators of UBS, the Swiss bank that acquired Credit Suisse in 2023.

“What the investigation has found to date shows that Credit Suisse’s involvement was more extensive than was previously known, and it underscores the importance of continuing to engage in research efforts about this horrific era of modern history,” Neil Barofsky, a lawyer overseeing the inquiry, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Barofsky’s report found 890 accounts potentially linked to Nazis: 628 individuals and 262 legal entities.

UK Sent Stealth Fighter Jets To Middle East In Preparations For War On Iran

The United Kingdom on February 6 deployed six F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter jets to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, according to flight tracking data.

The fighter jets departed RAF Marham in eastern England and were supported by Voyager aerial refueling tankers from the Royal Air Force during the transit.

The deployment came as the United States, the UK’s closest ally, continues to escalate against Iran. Since last month, President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened the Islamic Republic over a deadly wave of protests and alleged plans to execute prisoners. Recent weeks also saw a massive U.S. military buildup in the Middle East.

RAF Akrotiri serves as the UK’s primary Permanent Joint Operating Base in the eastern Mediterranean, often described as an “immovable aircraft carrier” for projecting air power into the Middle East without relying on naval carriers.

“We regularly review the capability and force protection of our overseas bases, including the Sovereign Base Areas. This recent movement of additional capabilities is part of our ongoing work to support security and stability in the Middle East,” a Ministry of Defence spokesperson told the UK Defence Journal when asked about the recent deployment of the F-35s.

At RAF Akrotiri, the fighter jets — all from the F-35B variant capable of taking off and landing vertically — joined at least ten Typhoon fighter jets, which were already deployed there.

This was the second time the UK has deployed fighter jets to the Middle East since the start of the escalation between the U.S. and Iran.

Last month, a squadron of Typhoon fighter jets was deployed at Al Udeid Air Base, which hosts U.S. troops, near the Qatari capital, Doha. The Defence Ministry said at the time that the deployment was carried out to “bolster defensive capability in the region” at the invitation of the Qatari government.

The UK boosted its military presence in the Middle East ahead of the Israeli 12-day war on Iran last June, which saw the U.S. attacking nuclear facilities in the Islamic Republic.

British fighter jets were deployed in the region at the time. However, it is still unclear if they took part in military operations, specifically in intercepting Iranian suicide drones and cruise missiles launched at Israel.

While the UK insists that its recent deployments are of a defensive nature, the F-35 is a capable offensive fighter jet, especially when it comes to suppression of enemy air defenses operations. The Typhoon can also launch stand-off strikes with the Franco-British Storm Shadow land-attack cruise missiles.

One the same day the British F-35s were deployed to RAF Akrotiri, the U.S. and Iran held indirect talks in Oman. Both sides reported a positive atmosphere. However, similar reports came out amid talks held last June just before Israel launched its attack.

The New South Wales government has invoked additional "major events" powers ahead of the Israeli president’s visit next week, as protestors aim for a “huge mobilisation”.

Premier Chris Minns on Saturday announced the change would grant police additional powers to disperse crowds around Sydney.

Waste of the Day: Postal Service’s Record Payroll Leads to Losses

Topline: The U.S. Postal Service spent a record $42.8 billion on payroll in 2025 while posting a $9 billion loss, according to payroll records obtained by Open the Books.

Key facts: Postmaster General David Steiner earned $350,260, the new records show, the highest salary in Post Office history. Eight others earned more than $300,000. In total, 328 employees made more than $200,000. There were 394 people earning that amount in 2024.

Nearly 20,000 people made $100,000 or more.

The Post Office brought in $80.5 billion in operating revenue, $916 million more than 2024. The boost was attributed to “strategic price increases” in postage costs, especially first-class mail.

Combined with $89.8 billion in expenses, the Postal Service had a $9 billion net loss. That was better than the $9.5 billion the Postal Service lost in 2024, which makes it appear as if its business model is improving. However, those figures include expenses and revenues that Postal Service management has no control over. Salaries, pensions, workers’ compensation, rent and more are mandated by Congress. Interest rates affect investment income.

When looking at only the spending that’s planned directly by Postal Service management, the Post Office had a “controllable loss” of $2.7 billion in 2025. That was the worst since 2020. Controllable loss was only $1.8 billion in 2024.

Over the next 10 years, the Postal Service plans to spend $20 billion on deferred investment and maintenance to upgrade and repair buildings and technology.

ETF Bets on Alien Tech With UFO Disclosure Strategy

One of the strangest ETFs to ever hit the market, the Tuttle Capital UFO Disclosure ETF (UFOD) aims to invest in companies that it says could benefit from “advanced or reverse-engineered alien technology.”

Yes, really.

Launched this week, UFOD is an actively managed ETF with a 0.99% expense ratio, and it leans heavily into the growing cultural and political attention around UFOs, now more commonly referred to as unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs.

“Unidentified anomalous phenomena are now addressed through official government reports, congressional hearings, and statutory reporting requirements,” the issuer says on the fund’s website.

That much is true. In 2022, Congress held its first public hearings on UFOs in more than half a century, and some former intelligence officials have testified that they’ve observed unidentified anomalous phenomena.

One official went further, alleging the existence of highly classified government programs involving recovered non-human technology.

The Disclosure Day Thesis

The issuer frames these developments as building toward what UFO enthusiasts commonly refer to as “Disclosure Day,” the hypothetical moment when the U.S. government formally acknowledges the existence of non-human intelligence and releases what it knows about recovered technology.

The concept has circulated for decades in UFO and conspiracy-theory communities and has increasingly entered the cultural mainstream. There’s even a science-fiction movie from Steven Spielberg titled Disclosure Day slated for release later this year.

UFOD is designed to position for what the fund calls the spillover effects of such a disclosure. The ETF seeks exposure to industries it believes would receive a surge of funding and new technology in the aftermath of a government confirmation.

The strategy does not generally assume companies already possess such technology, instead focusing on which companies could benefit following a disclosure (though the prospectus does reference rumors of classified R&D work at certain contractors).

Long, Short, and AI-Driven

According to the prospectus, the fund invests in companies that “might have R&D programs rumored to work with classified technology, potentially leading to groundbreaking advancements,” as well as firms that could benefit from new energy sources or metamaterials inspired by non-human technology.

It also targets companies involved in detection and counter-UAP systems, such as advanced sensor platforms.

UFOD can also use swaps and short positions to bet against companies it believes could be made obsolete by “alien-level” technological breakthroughs. These include “conventional propulsion firms and old-guard energy providers that might lose ground to advanced technologies.”

Company selection is guided by an AI-driven ranking system that scores firms based on their potential to benefit from, or be disrupted by, advanced alien technology, though the portfolio manager retains discretion to override the model.

A Surprisingly Normal Portfolio

Despite the fund’s premise, its current portfolio looks fairly conventional.

UFOD holds 36 positions, and the lineup is heavily weighted toward defense and industrial stocks. Amentum, a government engineering and defense services firm, is the ETF’s largest holding at roughly 8%.

Lockheed Martin follows at just under 8%, with Northrop Grumman at about 6%. Other notable holdings include General Electric and Boeing at around 4% each, Tesla at 3.7%, and Palantir at 2.6%.

In other words, while the fund’s thesis is unconventional, the portfolio itself resembles a defense- and industrial-tilted strategy more than a bet on anything truly exotic.

A Familiar Playbook

UFOD comes from Tuttle Capital, which has a history of launching provocative ETFs. The firm previously rolled out the Tuttle Inverse Cramer Tracker ETF (SJIM), which attempted to short stocks recommended by CNBC personality Jim Cramer.

Topline: In 2012, there was little reason not to close the Lake Murray State Park Airport in Oklahoma.There were no planes stored at the airport, and it averaged only one flight per month.

But by keeping the airport open, local officials were able to collect an annual $150,000 check from the Federal Aviation Administration. The airport collected $750,000 from 2008 to 2012,but less than $6,000 was used at the airport itself. Most of the cash was dispersed to other projects around the state.

That’s according to the “Wastebook” reporting published by the late U.S. Senator Dr. Tom Coburn. For years, these reports shined a white-hot spotlight on federal frauds and taxpayer abuses.

Coburn, the legendary U.S. Senator from Oklahoma, earned the nickname "Dr. No" by stopping thousands of pork-barrel projects using the Senate rules. Projects that he couldn't stop, Coburn included in his oversight reports.

Coburn's Wastebook 2012 included 100 examples of outrageous spending worth more than $18 billion, including Oklahoma’s pseudo-airport.

The airport’s $750,000 checks would be worth $1.1 million in today’s money.

Key facts: Oklahoma’s tourism department first recommended closing the Lake Murray airportin 2006 because it was blocking access to a nearby state park and golf course.

The director of the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission agreed, but the rest of the Commission refused. Members were too worried about losing the annual $150,000 federal check, according to reporting from The Oklahoman.

The cash kept flowing because smaller airports are legally entitled to annual funding under the federal Airport Improvement Program,but it wasn’t needed at Lake Murray. Oklahoma sent $300,000 of Lake Murray’s funding to two other airports that were actually functional, and the commission kept a stockpile of $450,000 that was still unused as of 2012.

Nearly $200,000 of the grant money was meant specifically to pay for new pavement and lighting on Lake Murray’s runway. It was not used for that purpose. In 2012, The Oklahoman reported that the runway had no electricity, and its pavement was “nearing the end of its useful life.”

The Commission had a change of heart in 2013and voted unanimously to close the airport, knowing it would mean returning $184,000 of funding. But at that point, huge amounts of cash had already been spent on projects never approved by the federal government.

Waste of the Day: L.A. Funds Activists, Then Group Sues

Topline:A Los Angeles advocacy group that sued the city twice was simultaneously being funded by the city itself.

Strategic Actions for a Just Economy (SAJE) has received at least $1.2 million in city contracts since 2020, including $375,000 in 2024. The funding stayed intact even while the group sued Los Angeles over Covid-19 emergency rental assistance and hotel construction.

The nonprofit has also advocated for abolishing the Los Angeles Police Department and cancelling the 2028 Summer Olympics, among other social justice issues.

The funding was first reported by the New York Post and verified through Open the Books’ public spending database.

Key facts: Most of SAJE’s public money came from the city’s Systematic Code Enforcement Program, which is funded by an annual fee on landlords and tenants. The program pays for apartment safety inspections and education about health codes. SAJE does not have to publicly disclose an itemized list of how its money was spent.

In 2023, SAJE and the advocacy group PolicyLink sued Los Angeles over its use of state and federal funds meant for rental assistance during the pandemic. They argued that a confusing application process caused tenants to be wrongfully denied assistance with limited access to the appeals process.

Separately, PolicyLink brought in $308,000 from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2024.

SAJE is currently suing the city over its plans to allow a Marriott Hotel to be built on land previously designated for affordable housing, which SAJE claims violates zoning laws. SAJE argues the land should have been included in a 2019 motion that set aside “surplus public land for 100% affordable housing in Black and Latinx neighborhoods as a corrective to Los Angeles’ history of racist housing and land-use policies.”

The nonprofit is also lobbying to cancel the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, which it claims will “accelerate the displacement, homelessness, and police violence so many Angelenos suffer on the daily.” And because the event will require a federal security presence, SAJE is concerned the Trump administration will use the opportunity to “militarize” Los Angeles.

According to the New York Post, SAJE has also held rallies and lobbied city council members to completely close down the Los Angeles Police Department.
