The symbolism of the four cardinal directions

1. The East: The importance of the east as the main point of orientation may be related to the rising of the sun and its importance in the religions of the ancient Near East. In the Bible its symbolism emerges for the first time in Genesis. The Garden of Eden was placed in the East (chap. 2:8), and its entrance faced the east (chap. 3:24). After sinning, Adam and Eve left the garden and went toward the east (chap. 3:24). This eastward movement continued with Cain (chap. 4:16) and culminated in the movement of the human race toward the east (chap. 11:2-4).

Within this context the east is symbolically ambivalent. The garden placed there symbolized safety and security. After sin, when it was the direction of the exile, it represented a condition of alienation from God. It was also the place of the wilderness, from which destructive winds came, threatening life (Ps. 48:7; Eze. 27:26). To the prophets the east was a symbol of Babylonian exile and the saving presence of God. He traveled to Babylon and ultimately redeemed His people (Eze. 10:18, 19; 11:22, 23). The east became a place where God intervened on behalf of His people, bringing them salvation (cf. Rev. 16:12).

2. The West: The west symbolizes both negative and positive elements. To the west of the land was the sea, representing evil and death (Dan. 7:2, 3). In fact, the term “sea” often referred to the west (Num. 3:23). It is also the place of darkness because that’s where the sun sets (Ps. 104:19, 20).

The positive meaning is its association with the Israelite tabernacle/Temple. Although it faced east, access to it required movement toward the west. In that sense the west pointed toward restored unity with God; a return to the Garden of Eden. When the Israelites traveled to and worshipped in the Temple they faced the west and had the rising sun behind them. This movement to the west began with Abram, who left the east and went to Canaan in the west in obedience to God (Gen. 11:31). It is a symbol of divine blessing. Once the exiles were liberated from their enemies in the east, they traveled west, to the land of Israel. In that journey, the Lord Himself traveled with them (Eze. 43:2-5).

3. The North: Bible students have suggested that the north is a symbol of the permanent or the eternal, perhaps because the polar stars were permanently visible in the sky. It is the place of God’s celestial dwelling (Isa. 14:13) and from which His glory descends (Job 37:22) with blessings or judgments (Eze. 1:4). He is the true King of the North.

But the north—represented by the left hand—is also a symbol of disaster. The enemy of God’s people came from the north (Jer. 1:14, 15; Eze. 38:6), bringing destruction. In a sense, the enemy was the false king of the north who tried to usurp God’s role and is finally destroyed by the Lord (Zeph. 2:12; Dan. 11:21-45).

4. The South: The south is primarily a negative symbol. But the fact that it is represented by the right hand makes it also a positive one. It is negative because to the south of Israel was the wilderness, a region where life does not prosper (Isa. 30:6). To the south was Egypt, which opposed God’s power and oppressed His people. But the south was also the place where the Lord appeared to Moses, went with Him to Egypt, liberated His people, and appeared to them on Mount Sinai (e.g., Deut. 33:2).

The ambivalent nature of the symbols of the four cardinal directions seems based on the fact that evil was perceived to be present everywhere and that God’s saving presence was always accessible to His people from any corner of the world (Ps. 139:7-12). In a sense they pointed beyond the points of the compass to the cosmic conflict between good and evil.

Massive stars in our Milky Way Galaxy live spectacular lives. Collapsing from vast cosmic clouds, their nuclear furnaces ignite and create heavy elements in their cores. After only a few million years for the most massive stars, the enriched material is blasted back into interstellar space where star formation can begin anew. The expanding debris cloud known as Cassiopeia A is an example of this final phase of the stellar life cycle. Light from the supernova explosion that created this remnant would have been first seen in planet Earth's sky about 350 years ago, although it took that light 11,000 years to reach us. This sharp NIRCam image from the James Webb Space Telescope shows the still-hot filaments and knots in the supernova remnant. The whitish, smoke-like outer shell of the expanding blast wave is about 20 light-years across. A series of light echoes from the massive star's cataclysmic explosion are also identified in Webb's detailed images of the surrounding interstellar medium.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence says it obtained and examined electronic voting machines in Puerto Rico last year to look for possible security vulnerabilities.

Authorities in Puerto Rico voluntarily handed over the equipment to ODNI, which wanted to evaluate the risk to the machinery given that “similar infrastructure is used throughout the United States,” an ODNI spokesperson said in an email.

News of the move by the office overseen by Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, follows President Donald Trump’s calls to “nationalize” future elections and have the federal government “get involved” in some states where he says there is a risk of fraud.

Reuters first reported the ODNI’s action in Puerto Rico.

Gabbard says Trump instructed her to be present last week at an FBI search of an election center in Fulton County, Georgia, where agents seized ballots from the 2020 election.

Trump, who lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, has falsely claimed the election was “rigged” against him and has said that investigations will verify his claims.

Under the Constitution, state governments oversee elections. In the past, federal agencies have offered advice to state officials and U.S. territories about how best to secure voting machines.

Democrats in Congress have accused the president of planning to use the federal government to interfere with vote counting in key states in the upcoming midterm elections in the fall.

Gabbard’s office sought to test the voting equipment in Puerto Rico because of “publicly reported claims relating to elections in Puerto Rico alleging discrepancies and systemic anomalies in their electronic voting systems,” the ODNI spokesperson said.

The ODNI did not specify what possible anomalies had been found previously in Puerto Rico.

The spokesperson said that in its examination of the voting systems, the ODNI “found extremely concerning cyber security and operational deployment practices that pose a significant risk to U.S. elections.”

Cybersecurity problems included the use of cellular modems that connected to networks outside the U.S., the spokesperson said.

Local election officials and the governor’s office in Puerto Rico did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Puerto Rico is a territory, not a state, and its residents are American citizens but can’t vote in the general election for president.

Pablo Jose Hernandez, who represents Puerto Rico in Congress as a nonvoting member, criticized ODNI’s actions as a political stunt.

“There is no evidence of foreign interference in Puerto Rico’s elections,” said Hernandez. “Yet the Trump administration has failed to explain why Tulsi Gabbard’s team was there in the first place, while the President continues to send conflicting messages. Voters deserve straightforward answers, not political theater.”

Puerto Rico uses Dominion ImageCast Precinct scanners, according to experts. Some of the vulnerabilities found in Puerto Rico have been highlighted more broadly by the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency and by security experts, including how voting machines can be attacked through insecure hardware, exposed ports, weak protections or unauthorized code, the ODNI spokesperson said.

Mark Lindeman, the policy and strategy director at Verified Voting, a nonprofit that seeks to promote the responsible use of technology in elections, said he was skeptical that ODNI had discovered important findings in its probe of Puerto Rico’s voting systems, based on its statement.

Given that Puerto Rico is far closer to the British Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic than any U.S. state, “I wouldn’t be shocked if some of the devices are configured to connect through ‘cellular networks outside of the United States,’” he said in an email.

“That doesn’t describe a meaningful vulnerability. It sounds like an attempt to rationalize ODNI’s involvement.”

Gabbard has defended her decision to observe the extraordinary FBI search in Georgia last week, saying her role as director of intelligence includes broad authority to ensure the country’s elections are secure and protected against foreign hackers or other threats.

Gabbard’s office has not stated what foreign threat prompted her focus on the FBI search in Georgia or the examination of voting machines in Puerto Rico.

By law and by custom, U.S. intelligence agencies steer away from taking a leading role in domestic law enforcement operations. But the intelligence agencies, which are prohibited from spying on Americans, share information with domestic law enforcement.

he vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, told NBC News on Thursday that he feared that the administration is working to dismantle the safeguards that protect elections ahead of the 2026 midterms.

“Unfortunately, it appears there may be a coordinated effort to try to interfere in the ’26 midterms,” Warner said. “I think we’ve got a president that can’t get over the fact that he lost in 2020 and now, in kind of a Nixonian effort, is going to try to do everything he can to make sure he doesn’t get another beating in 2026.”

In the 2024 election, U.S. officials did not find evidence of foreign actors successfully hacking into election infrastructure, though foreign adversaries carried out information warfare to try to influence the outcome.

But in the 2016 election, Russian operatives probed voter registration systems and successfully penetrated at least one. The hacking did not alter any votes cast, officials said.

The Four Satanic Crown Princes of Hell

While all of the infernal names are said to reside in the Royal Palace of Hell, four are set apart as being particularly powerful. These are known to LaVeyan Satanists as the crown princes of Hell.

Each prince is associated with a cardinal direction: north, south, east and west. This is in line with other Western magical practices that commonly associate supernatural beings with the cardinal points. For Satanists, he is:

He is associated in the Satanic Bible with the element of fire and the south.

Lucifer

The Book of Isaiah addresses the Babylonian king by a phrase that translates roughly to "Day Star, Son of the Dawn." When Christians translated the passage into Latin, the term was rendered as Lucifer. This literally means "morning star," and it came to erroneously be considered a proper name.

There is nothing in Isaiah that associates Lucifer with Satan, but the imagery of Lucifer as a fallen angel struck a chord with Christians. The association of Lucifer with Satan was further cemented in the Christian mind by works such as Dante's Divine Comedy and Milton's Paradise Lost.

The Satanic Bible celebrates the original meaning of the name, describing Lucifer as the "bringer of light, enlightenment," (p. 57) and associating him with air and the east. He is a person's inner light, which society attempts to drag into the darkness of conformity.

It is important to note that Luciferians have a slightly different view of Lucifer.

Belial

The Hebrew term Belial is generally translated to mean "without worth," although the "Satanic Bible" uses a less often used translation "without a master." In the New Testament, the term is used as a synonym for Satan. He is also frequently associated with sex, lust, confusion, and darkness.

The "Satanic Bible" also associates Belial with independence, the earth, and the north, the direction of darkness.

Earth is the element of grounding and realism. It keeps people's feet on the ground rather than having their head in the clouds, confused by self-deceit and external influence. Earth is also commonly associated with fertility and thus with sex and lust, referring back to the common Christian understanding of Belial.

Leviathan

The Books of Psalms, Job, and Isaiah all mention a great sea creature called Leviathan. In these texts, Leviathan is monstrous but not demonic, as Christians often understand the beast to be. Leviathan may also have its origins in Tiamat and Lotan, both monstrous Mesopotamian creatures that sow chaos and are eventually slain by hero-gods.

For Satanists, Leviathan is:

"A great sea monster, sexual desire, from out of the unknown and feared depths. The hidden truth; the hidden and horrible nature of existence and struggle. For four fucking years, the United States military…the most feared, most lethal instrument of violence ever forged by man…was deliberately, systematically, sadistically dismantled from the inside by DEI.

Not weakened.

Not hampered.

Dismantled. Turned from a pack of apex predators into a bloated, self-loathing, quota-chasing circus.

This wasn’t accident.

Promotion boards became diversity checklists. You could be a mediocre officer with the right skin tone or pronoun set and leapfrog decorated combat leaders who’d actually smelled blood and cordite.

The message drilled into every troop: your kills, your wounds, your nights in the shit carrying your buddy’s body…none of that matters as much as identity politics.

Unit cohesion…the single most critical factor in combat effectiveness…was shattered on purpose.

Trust is oxygen on the battlefield. When a Marine looks at his platoon sergeant and wonders if the slot was earned or gifted to hit a quota, doubt creeps in.

When soldiers watch standards crater so certain demographics can pass, resentment festers like gangrene.

When the entire officer corps is paralyzed by fear of being labeled bigot for enforcing basic discipline, the whole organism begins to die.

This is not theory. This is Thucydides, Clausewitz, and every hard lesson from Cannae to Fallujah: armies that prioritize anything over competence and trust get annihilated.

And the numbers don’t lie. Recruitment collapsed.

A potent winter storm in late January 2026 left much of North Carolina dealing with significant snow accumulations.

Though the state is no stranger to snow, such widespread coverage is unusual.

This image, acquired on February 2 with the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA’s Terra satellite, reveals a nearly continuous blanket of white stretching from mountain cities in the west to beachfront towns in the east.

According to the North Carolina State Climate Office, measurable snow fell in all 100 counties for the first time in more than a decade.

Snowfall in North Carolina typically requires cold air funneled in from the north to combine with moisture supplied by a low-pressure system.

During the January 31 weekend event, Arctic air from earlier in the week lingered across the state as a storm approached along a near-shore track, setting the stage for widespread snow.

Snow totals exceeded a foot in some of the state’s western, mountainous regions, following several years without significant snowfall events, though some locations such as Asheville saw smaller amounts.

The storm even pushed south into Greenville, South Carolina, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where the downtown area saw about 5 inches (13 centimeters) by the evening of January 31, according to the National Weather Service.

In the Piedmont region, the hilly central part of the state, Charlotte received nearly a foot of snow—the most since 2004—while Raleigh saw a lighter accumulation of 2.8 inches, according to the state climate center.

Even coastal parts of the state traded brown sandy beaches for a blanket of white, with more than a foot reported in parts of Carteret County.

Beaufort, a mainland town in the southern Outer Banks area, experienced heavy blowing snow. Slightly inland, Greenville received 14 inches, an amount not seen since a large storm in March 1980.

Though appearing serene from space, the storm posed real hazards on the ground. Dangerous road conditions snarled traffic and caused collisions, according to local news reports, while coastal areas saw high winds and waves.

Overwash on Highway 12 in the Outer Banks coated parts of the road in standing water and sand, while several homes along the shore of Hatteras Island collapsed into the sea.
