EU’s ‘drone wall’ idea is ‘utopia’ – Romanian military chief

Brussels calls the project, which gained traction last year, a “bedrock of credible defense”

The European Union’sproposed ‘drone wall’ is a “utopia” that is impossible to implement, Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruta said Thursday.

Senior EU officials and lawmakers have promoted the vaguely defined ‘drone wall’ as central to the economic bloc’s military buildup against a perceived Russian threat. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen insisted in her September State of the Union address thatit is “not an abstract ambition” but “the bedrock of credible defense.”

“A drone wall, where someone, like in a computer game, makes a curtain through which absolutely nothing passes, is a utopia,” Miruta, who took office in November, told the TV channel Digi 24. “We don’t have a wall. Poland doesn’t have a wall, nor do the Nordic countries.”

Proponents describethe project as a network of detection and interception systems along NATO’s eastern flank. Kiev said Ukrainian drone innovations would be essential to it,but reports suggest the ‘drone wall’ is more a PR label than a viable military concept.

The idea gained traction last fall amid reports of “mystery drone” sightings across Europe, which officials and media linked to Russia without firm evidence.

Moscow called the claims part of a Brussels-led fear campaign to distract European voters from domestic problems and justify higher military spending.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “building walls is always bad, as history shows,” in comments regarding the ‘drone wall’ concept.

Minnesota Activists Recreate Iconic Iwo Jima Photo With State Flag

Activists in Minnesota took inspiration from Joe Rosenthal’s iconic Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima photograph by raising the Minnesota state flag.

A short clip posted by Anton Treuer, shows an impressively faithful recreation of Rosenthal’s photo, which was taken atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in the final stages of the Pacific War.

Just like Rosenthal’s photo, there are six people raising the Minnesota flag, and they’re even arranged in a similar fashion to the original taken in 1945.

Unsurprisingly, given the tense situation in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul, there was a strong reaction online, particularly on X where Treuer has apparently removed his original post.

The “racial equity educator” and “Indigenous language warrior” was chastised for “cosplaying as American marines” by the Daily Caller. He captioned the post: “We stand for justice and a future worth fighting for!”

Ever since Minnesota adopted the new state flag in 2024, it has divided people along partisan lines. While some believe the flag has a resemblance to the Somali flag (both flags feature a star and a similar shade of blue), Reuters reports the new Minnesota state flag was not inspired by Somalia’s, according to those who designed and selected it. The Somali flag features a five-pointed star, while the Minnesota flag has an eight-pointed star. Nevertheless, the large Somali population present in Minnesota has led critics to believe that there is a connection.

Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima

Joe Rosenthal won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Photography for Raising the Flag, but few pictures that have won that prize have gone on to be so ingrained in the public’s consciousness. It has a claim to being the most famous photo taken in U.S. history, having been reproduced on postage stamps, war bond posters, and recreated as statues.

In 2024, a Type 1 version was sold for $103,090 at auction, making it the most expensive wartime image ever sold. Type 1 means it was made directly from Rosenthal’s negative within two years of it being captured.

Rosenthal has had a street named after him in San Francisco and even the Taliban recreated it after retaking Afghanistan from the U.S.

‘Staggering’: Trump SBA Suspends 111,620 California Borrowers-Finds Nearly $9 Billion in Suspected Small Business Fraud

The Trump administration’s Small Business Administration announced Friday that the agency has suspended 111,620 California borrowers connected to $8.6 BILLION in suspected pandemic fraud.

In a press release, SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler noted, “Once again, the Trump SBA is taking decisive action to deliver accountability in a state whose unaccountable welfare policies have created a culture of fraud and abuse at the expense of law-abiding taxpayers and small business owners.”

“Today, we announced we have suspended nearly 112,000 borrowers tied to at least $9 billion in suspected fraud. This staggering number represents the most significant crack-down on those who defrauded pandemic programs, and it illuminates the scale of corruption that the Biden Administration tolerated for years.

“As we did in Minnesota, we are actively working with federal law enforcement to identify the criminals who defrauded American taxpayers, hold them to account, and recoup the stolen funds. As we continue our state-by-state work, our message is clear: pandemic-era fraudsters will not get a pass under this Administration.”

Loeffler took to X to add, “California, just like Minnesota, invites criminals to abuse the system with socialist welfare policies. Fraud scaled up massively during the pandemic – and the Biden Admin failed to stop it.”

“In San Diego, I visited a single address tied to 14 different ‘small businesses’ that were formed during the pandemic, who received $2M+ in COVID-era loans that still haven’t been fully repaid.”

“The era of abuse is over.”

“Today, the SBA is announcing the suspension of 111,620 California borrowers connected to $8.6 billion in suspected PPP and EIDL fraud. We will pursue criminal referrals with the DOJ, and fight to claw every dollar back.”
