Richard Clarida, the Vice-Chair of the Federal Reserve, traded money from a bond fund to a stock fund only a day before the Fed made their pandemic statement in 2020.

The statement flagged possible actions the Fed could take if the pandemic worsened.

Federal Reserve Vice Chair Richard Clarida traded between $1 million and $5 million out of a bond fund into stock funds one day before Chair Jerome Powell issued a statement flagging possible policy action as the pandemic worsened, his 2020 financial disclosures show.

Clarida’s trades, described in forms filed with the government ethics office, show the shifting of the funds out of a Pimco bond fund on Feb. 27, 2020, and on the same day buying the Pimco StocksPlus Fund and the iShares MSCI USA Min Vol Factor exchange-traded fund in similar dollar ranges. For the year, he listed five transactions.

The following day on Feb. 28, a Friday, at 2:30 p.m., Powell took the unusual step of releasing a statement saying the virus poses “evolving risks to economic activity.” In the same statement, Powell said the Fed was “closely monitoring developments and their implications for the economic outlook.”

Two weeks ago, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell directed officials to look at ethical rules regarding financial activities by senior staff at the Fed.

Trump’s request for a preliminary injunction against Twitter was filed late on Friday in Miami, claiming the social media company cancelled his account in January under pressure from his political rivals in Congress, the report by Bloomberg News said.

Twitter declined to comment. Trump’s representatives did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment outside business hours.

Twitter “exercises a degree of power and control over political discourse in this country that is immeasurable, historically unprecedented, and profoundly dangerous to open democratic debate”, Bloomberg quoted the former president’s request as saying.

Establishment Now Advocating Lockdowns — Not to Save You From Covid, But From Climate Change

According to her bio on her website, Mariana Francesca Mazzucato is an economist with dual Italian–US citizenship. She is a professor at University College London in Economics of Innovation and Public Value and she is the founder and director of their Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. However, according to her recent essay, she’s also a tyrannical advocate of economic lockdowns. Unlike the crippling coronavirus lockdowns that sent overdoses into record breaking territory and childhood suicides through the roof, these lockdowns are for climate change. Unfortunately, she is not alone in her views either.

In her essay, which was endorsed by many in the establishment media, Mazzucato pushes for draconian measures to curb what she refers to as a tipping point on climate change. If we don’t take “dramatic interventions” immediately, human civilization as we know it will come to an end and so will the planet, according to Mazzucato. These interventions are not child’s play either. According to Mazzucato’s paper, which was reprinted in mainstream media outlets across the planet:

Under a “climate lockdown,” governments would limit private-vehicle use, ban consumption of red meat, and impose extreme energy-saving measures, while fossil-fuel companies would have to stop drilling. To avoid such a scenario, we must overhaul our economic structures and do capitalism differently.

Given what we know about the covid lockdowns, the effects of such a system would likely have devastating consequences for every country and send shockwaves throughout every socioeconomic arena. So why on Earth would politicians and media be chomping at the bit to get on board?

Earlier this month, President Joe Biden used the recent hurricanes as “proof” we’re in a “climate crisis” and issued a “code red” for the world. He was backed up by House climate adviser Gina McCarthy, who added that the climate crisis is now a “health emergency.”

A recent Nature journal piece followed suit, claiming that COVID-19 lockdowns have prepared people for “personal carbon allowances.” Restrictions on individual freedoms “that were unthinkable only one year before” have us “more prepared to accept the tracking and limitations” to “achieve a safer climate,” the piece notes.

World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas agrees and held no punches when he declared that the covid lockdowns provided a blueprint for how we should proceed with climate lockdowns.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is not a solution for climate change. However, it does provide us with a platform for more sustained and ambitious climate action to reduce emissions to net zero through a complete transformation of our industrial, energy and transport systems. The needed changes are economically affordable and technically possible and would affect our everyday life only marginally. It is to be welcomed that a growing number of countries and companies have committed themselves to carbon neutrality,” he said. “There is no time to lose.”

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday announced he was retiring from politics and dropping plans to run for vice president in elections next year, when his term ends, paving the way for his politician daughter to make a possible bid for the top post.

Speaking before reporters, Duterte said many Filipinos have expressed their opposition to his vice-presidential bid in surveys and public forums.

“The overwhelming sentiment of the Filipino is that I’m not qualified, and it would be a violation of the constitution,” Duterte said. “I will follow what you wish, and today I announce my retirement from politics."

The 76-year-old leader, known for his deadly anti-drugs crackdown, brash rhetoric and unorthodox political style, earlier accepted the ruling party’s nomination for him to seek the vice presidency in the May 9 elections. The decision outraged many of his opponents, who have described him as a human rights calamity in an Asian bastion of democracy.

Duterte’s withdrawal could pave the way for the possible presidential run of his daughter Sara Duterte, who is currently the mayor of southern Davao city. She has been prodded by many supporters to make a bid to succeed her father and has topped independent public opinion surveys on who should lead the country next.

But after her father initially declared that he would seek the vice presidency, Sara Duterte announced she would not run for president, saying she and her father have agreed that only one Duterte would run for a national office next year.

More than 100 protesters arrested as police in Melbourne, Australia crack down on vaccine mandate demonstrators

Police in Melbourne arrested more than 100 demonstrators at a rally against mandatory vaccination. The protest came after Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews issued a fresh round of vaccine mandates, affecting over a million workers.

Andrews announced on Friday that all Victoria residents working outside their homes need to have a first Covid-19 vaccine dose by October 15 and be fully vaccinated by November 26. The mandate will affect around 1.2 million Victorians, the Guardian reported, working in a range of occupations including retail, law, media and professional sports. It comes on top of existing mandates for healthcare, education and construction workers.

These mandates, and the draconian lockdown implemented by Victoria authorities, have led to mass demonstrations marked by extreme police brutality. Locals in Melbourne took to the streets again on Saturday to protest against the mandates, but the several dozen demonstrators were outnumbered by cops, who soon chased them away on horseback, while officers on foot tackled and arrested some among the crowd.

Police arrested 109 people and issued 108 penalty notices, 9News reported. A police spokesperson said that future protests would receive a similar response.

One day earlier, a group of teachers in Melbourne staged their own silent protest against vaccine mandates. The group were largely masked and vaccinated, according to reports, but at least one person was arrested.

Both protests were notably less violent than recent clashes on the streets of Melbourne, which drew international attention due to the extreme tactics used by police.

Duterte Announces Retirement From Philippines Politics As Manny Pacquiao Launches Bid For Presidency

Known for his violent crackdown on drug dealers and other unorthodox policy decisions that won him both admiration and hatred, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced Saturday that he would be retiring from politics after dropping his bid for the presidency.

That Duterte is ending his political career so soon is ironic. Many western political analysts and high-handed scribes once condemned Duterte as a violent authoritarian who would shift the Philippines' political system closer to that of Russia's.

However, that never happened. And now, Duterte, who is constitutionally forbidden from seeking another term as president, has decided not to run as Vice President in 2022, claiming "the public" doesn't support him potentially subverting the country's constitution to extend his rule (but we thought he was an authoritarian?)

Duterte's decision comes with a twist: his former top aide and now Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, who was believed to be the ruling PDP-Laban Party's candidate to succeed Duterte as president, has instead filed paperwork to run for the vice presidential spot, now that Duterte has withdrawn his candidacy.

"Today, I announce my retirement from politics," he said, appearing at the Commission on Elections center in Manila alongside Go, who also announced his decision to seek the VP spot instead of Duterte. "The overwhelming… sentiment of the Filipinos is that I am not qualified and it would be a violation of the constitution to circumvent the law, the spirit of the constitution," Duterte said.

There's reason to believe that Duterte's retirement is part of a strategy of stepping aside to allow his daughter, Sara, to seek the presidency either in this cycle, or the next.

Georgia Arrests Ex-President Saakashvili After Return From 8-Year Exile In Ukraine

School disruption, long COVID-19 both factors in choice to vaccinate young kids: Tam

When most parents decided to have kids, they probably thought some of their bigger parenting decisions would be about sleep-training, extracurricular activities or the right age to get a phone.

Few probably thought ahead to the best way to protect their kids from a global pandemic that shows no signs of slowing down after nearly a year and a half.

Soon parents might get to decide whether to vaccinate their young children against COVID-19, and according to Canada's top doctor they'll have to consider more than just the safety data.

"It is a complex set of factors," Dr. Teresa Tam, the said chief public health officer, said in a news briefing Friday.

There are no COVID-19 vaccines approved for use in children under 12 in Canada right now, but Pfizer announced earlier this week positive results in its trial for kids aged five and up.

The company said the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was safe, well tolerated and showed robust neutralizing antibody responses in kids aged five to 11, with results for children six months to five years old expected as early as later this year.

Once the company submits its findings to the government, Health Canada and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization will look carefully to determine if the vaccine is safe and effective for children.

But with the virus posing a smaller risk of serious illness and death in children, Dr. Nazeem Muhajarine expects parents to have more trepidation about vaccinating their kids than they did getting the shot themselves.

The same is true of long-standing routine vaccines that babies have been getting for many years, said Muhajarine, a professor of community health and epidemiology at the University of Saskatchewan.

"If you extrapolate from that to COVID-19 vaccines, I think there will be an even greater concern among some parents about getting their kids inoculated against COVID-19," he said in an interview Friday.

He said parents should consider other factors when weighing the risks and benefits of the vaccine, including the unknown effects of "long COVID."

"Some kids have shown symptoms and signs and challenges, including cognitive challenges, months and months after that initial recovery," he said. "I think we don't know much about long COVID, and we have to keep that in mind."

Rare incidents of serious illness and even death in kids can also become more common as the virus spreads through the population, Tam warned parents.

"We will see children in the hospitals, as well as some rare but serious cases, and the numbers of those can be significant if there's a lot of viral activity," she said.

In Ontario, kids under 11 years old accounted for more than 20 per cent of new COVID-19 cases in the province over the last two days.

That's up from just 12.6 per cent in the last week of August.

Parents and policy-makers will also have to consider which option is most likely to keep kids in schools, Tam said.

In Britain, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) could not recommend universally vaccinating healthy kids age 12 to 15 on health grounds alone, because the margin of benefit was small, and there was evidence of a link to extremely rare cases of myocarditis – an inflammation of the heart.

In Canada there have been 774 reported instances of myocarditis and pericarditis, inflammation of the membrane around the heart, as of Sept. 17, out of 54 million vaccines administered so far.

Tam said government agencies are watching the situation carefully because though instances of myocarditis after vaccination are rare, they appear more commonly in young adults.

"This has got to be weighed against significant social, educational, developmental and mental health impacts on children for missing schools," Tam said.

Ultimately the U.K.'s four chief medical officers opted to offer vaccines to that age group anyways, in part because of the importance of kids being able to stay in their classrooms.

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization and the Public Health Agency of Canada will provide more official advice when they receive and analyze the safety and efficacy data from Pfizer and other vaccine manufacturers.

National School Boards Association: Angry Parents Are Domestic Terrorists, Biden Must Stop Them With FBI, PATRIOT Act

The NSBA wants the DHS, FBI, Secret Service, and Department of Education to investigate people who show up at school board meetings

The National School Board Association recently sent a letter to the Biden White House imploring the president to take action against large numbers of parents across the country who continue to confront school board members over Critical Race Theory, mask and vaccine mandates, and in some cases, sexually depraved curriculum.

In a little publicized September 29 letter addressed to Joe Biden, the National School Boards Association (NSBA) says public school teachers “are under immediate threat” and asks for “immediate assistance” to protect students and teachers from “physical violence” at the hands of domestic terrorists who take the form of concerned parents.

Immediately after, the NSBA begins focusing largely on supposed threats against school board members, notes that school mask mandates created across the country coupled with physical threats posed by “propaganda purporting the false inclusion of critical race theory within classroom instruction” have made school boards very unpopular. In the letter, the NSBA falsely claims Critical Race Theory is a “complex law school and graduate school.”

The school board association boasts of its “more than 90,000 school board members who govern our country’s 14,000 local public school districts educating more than 50 million schoolchildren,” then asks Biden to instruct federal law enforcement to begin investigating individuals who attend school board meetings.

Noting that local law enforcement is “working with public school officials in several communities,” the the association “respectfully asks” for a “joint collaboration among federal law enforcement agencies” to address “these threats.” Specifically, the NSBA names the FBI, DHS, Secret Service, and National Threat Assessment Center to begin investigating the people who show up at school board meetings.

The association suggests those involved “could be” guilty of “domestic terrorism.” And as such, it also merits investigation from the the Departments of Justice and Education. The NSBA says such a development would merit even more help from the DHS and FBI, and suggests a “review” should “examine appropriate enforceable actions” using the PATRIOT Act.

Wyman addressed a wide range of questions surrounding claims of election fraud, her status as a Republican, and more.

Another commenter asked Wyman what she plans to do “to restore the faith of Washington conservatives in our elections,” particularly in the wake of a recently-filed lawsuit alleging thousands of votes statewide were flipped from a third party to Joe Biden in the 2020 election, as well as ongoing claims from former gubernatorial candidate Loren Culp that the election was not legitimate.

“They are alleging felony-level crimes, and yet no proof has been turned over to sheriffs or the FBI,” she noted.

There’s never a good time for your bank’s IT system to go down. But few can be worse than in the middle of a lockdown. It’s difficult to leave home, your local branch may not be open, and as a result you are more reliant than ever on digital banking services. In New Zealand, now in its seventh week of nationwide lockdown, one of the country’s largest lenders, Kiwibank, went down on Tuesday, leaving many of its customers in the lurch. It is one of a string of IT outages the bank has suffered over the past three weeks, after a DDoS attack on New Zealand’s third largest Internet provider caused IT crashes at a number of lenders, including Commonwealth Bank and Anz Bank.

New Zealand is not the only country to have suffered major outages within its banking system in recent weeks. On September 12, operating failures at Mexico’s largest bank, BBVA Mexico, left 24 million account holders unable to use the bank’s 13,000 ATMs, its mobile app or in-store payments for almost 20 hours. It being a Sunday, customers could not even avail of the lender’s in-branch cash services. The bank blamed the outage on a system update failure and has offered to compensate customers with cash bonuses on purchases when using their credit or debit cards. The bank was also at pains to assure them that their financial data was not compromised.

“It had nothing to do with the outside world,” said Jorge Terrazas, the bank’s director of communicate and corporate identity. “The bank and its customers’ information is secure. What we did was undo the changes to the system and return everything to as it was.”

Less than a week after BBVA’s outage, Santander Mexico, another Spanish-owned Mexican bank, suffered an outage that left customers across the country unable to use their debit cards at the ATM or in stores. Again, it was blamed on internal problems.

World Bank Launches First-Ever Pandemic Bonds to Support $500 Million Pandemic Emergency Financing Facility

Washington, DC, June 28, 2017 – The World Bank (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development) today launched specialized bonds aimed at providing financial support to the Pandemic Emergency Financing Facility (PEF), a facility created by the World Bank to channel surge funding to developing countries facing the risk of a pandemic.

This marks the first time that World Bank bonds are being used to finance efforts against infectious diseases, and the first time that pandemic risk in low-income countries is being transferred to the financial markets.

The PEF will provide more than $500 million to cover developing countries against the risk of pandemic outbreaks over the next five years, through a combination of bonds and derivatives priced today, a cash window, and future commitments from donor countries for additional coverage.

The transaction, that enables PEF to potentially save millions of lives, was oversubscribed by 200% reflecting an overwhelmingly positive reception from investors and a high level of confidence in the new World Bank sponsored instrument. With such strong demand, the World Bank was able to price the transaction well below the original guidance from the market. The total amount of risk transferred to the market through the bonds and derivatives is $425 million.

“With this new facility, we have taken a momentous step that has the potential to save millions of lives and entire economies from one of the greatest systemic threats we face,” World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim said. “We are moving away from the cycle of panic and neglect that has characterized so much of our approach to pandemics. We are leveraging our capital market expertise, our deep understanding of the health sector, our experience overcoming development challenges, and our strong relationships with donors and the insurance industry to serve the world’s poorest people. This creates an entirely new market for pandemic risk insurance. Drawing on lessons from the Ebola Outbreak in West Africa, the Facility will help improve health security for everyone. I especially want to thank the World Health Organization and the governments of Japan and Germany for their support in launching this new mechanism.”

Major banks, airlines hit in new global online outage

Major banks and airlines were among businesses hit by a fresh global online outage Thursday, with the problem traced to US-based tech provider Akamai.

An hour-long blackout hit a number of US airlines and several Australian financial firms as well as other companies dotted around the world, with angry customers unable to access websites and mobile apps.

"We are aware of the issue and actively working to restore services as soon as possible," an Akamai spokesperson told AFP.

American, Delta, United and Southwest airlines were among those affected, while the issue appeared to be more prolonged in Australia – where problems struck mid-afternoon as much of the world slept.

Australia's largest financial firm Commonwealth Bank told AFP that it and many of the country's major lenders had been hit.

The outages, which began around 2:10pm Sydney time (0510 GMT), also hit Australia's postal service and Virgin Australia.

The airline said in a statement that it "was one of many organisations to experience an outage with the Akamai content delivery system".

A spokesperson for ANZ bank told AFP the incident was "related to an external provider" but that "connectivity was restored quickly and the most impacted services are back online".

Banks in New Zealand and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange also reported problems with their web platforms.

It is the latest incident to draw attention to the stability of economically vital online platforms and the key role that a handful of mostly unknown companies play in keeping the web running.

Last week US media and government websites, including the White House, New York Times, Reddit and Amazon were temporarily hit after a glitch with cloud computing services provider Fastly.

Fastly offers a service to websites around the world to speed up loading times for websites.

Akamai offers a range of similar IT products designed to boost online performance and security.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company refused to comment on what product the problem came from, but one of the affected firms reported it used Akamai for "IT network authentication".

Among the services Akamai provides are platforms that prevent DDoS attacks – an often crude cyberattack that knocks websites out by peppering them with requests for data.

"Our priority is restoring service as quickly as possible. We will share additional information as it becomes available," an Akamai spokesperson said.

A series of high-profile hack-for-ransom attacks have also left corporations around the world jittery over cybersecurity risks, although there was no indication the latest problems were caused by malicious actors.

Colonial Pipeline was briefly shuttered after an attack in May, and JBS, the world's largest meat producer, was forced to stop operations in the United States and Australia.

Both firms reportedly paid ransoms to get operations back up and running.

The issue of cybersecurity was at the top of the agenda when US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met in Geneva on Wednesday.

Washington believes hackers who have extorted hundreds of millions of dollars from Western governments, companies, and organisations operate from Russian soil.

Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai, M.I.T. Ph.D., the Inventor of Email issued a response to Maricopa County’s explanation as to why the “Verified & Approved” envelope stamps appeared to be photoshopped.

Dr. Shiva was contracted by Arizona auditors to analyze mail-in ballot envelope images and his findings were highly suspicious, to say the least.

A poor explanation from the county raised even more questions from Dr. Shiva.

Apparently, the county compressed the images before delivery to the Senate instead of giving the real unaltered envelope images.

Shiva describes the explanation as “somewhat cryptic”, then follows up with questions addressing the SOP for envelope image processing.
