Satellite antenna builder Kymeta announced Tuesday it closed a significant new round of fundraising led by Bill Gates, as the start-up looks to increase manufacturing and sales of its mobile communications product.

“At the end of the day, the problem that our customers want to solve is highly reliable broadband service,” Executive Chairman Doug Hutcheson told CNBC.

Kymeta raised $85.2 million in this latest round, including $78.5 million from Gates. The company has now raised about $300 million since its founding in 2012, including investments from Lux Capital, Intelsat and Liberty Global.

The company’s core product is its “electronically steered” flat satellite antenna, built to replace the dish technology that track moving satellites but are also capable of connecting with cellular networks. It looks to fill a gap in connecting satellite networks to the ground, as Kymeta says other antenna aren’t durable enough to support mobility.

Kymeta’s latest antenna is the u8 terminal, which it is beginning a beta trial for a launch to market by year-end. Hutcheson described the u8 terminal as a “transformational” product for the communications industry. He says it is the only one of its kind and can connect with a wide variety of satellites — from the likes of ViaSat’s in the distant geosynchronous orbit to the much closer and smaller SpaceX Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit.

“The technology works to provide satellite communications with no moving parts because of the flat panel and it is very robust. It could take hundreds of G’s of force, if a vehicle rolled over, or take extreme conditions and just keep working,” Hutcheson said.

Kymeta’s two target industries are defense and first responders, with the former making up all the customers participating in its beta testing program. The company declined to disclose further specifics on the customers, citing confidential agreements with the Department of Defense.

The Redmond, Washington-based company earlier this month acquired Lepton Global Solutions, a satellite communications network that Kymeta says will further improve the connectivity of its service. Kymeta has nearly 200 employees and expects that headcount to steadily grow in the next year.

Gates invested in Kymeta in 2016. Hutcheson described him as a “patient investor.”

“I think Bill believes that we have the right technology that that has been developed now to the point where it is ready to change how people think and use this type of communications,” Hutcheson said.

Billionaire philanthropists Bill Gates and Aliko Dangote have hailed the declaration of Nigeria by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as being polio-free.

The global health body on Tuesday certified Nigeria and the rest of Africa polio-free.

The WHO Africa Regional Certification Commission (ARCC) said the major milestone was achieved four years after the last recorded cases of wild polio in the country.

In a tweet, Gates said that the remarkable achievement was a step closer to global polio eradication.

“Today, we move one step closer toward a world without polio. This is an incredible milestone that’s worth celebrating. It is also an important reminder of what can be accomplished when we work together toward a common goal,” he wrote on his Twitter handle @BillGates.

In his remarks, Africa’s richest man, Dangote, said that the polio-free Africa was an indication that the fight to end polio globally was possible.

“Today we celebrate a polio-free Africa, the result of decades of vaccination, hard work, collaboration. Tomorrow we get back to work, to ensure wild polio does not come back. Together, we all can #EndPolio globally,” he tweeted.

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, tweeted via his official Twitter account @antonioguterres, that the declaration filled him with optimism that a lot could be achieved through global efforts.

“Africa has been declared free of polio today.

“This historic milestone fills me with hope and optimism.

“We can achieve so much when we work together as a global community.”

Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Board Chair, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI), felicitated with President Muhammadu Buhari and his predecessors.

“A great day for #Nigeria and #Africa. Nigeria receives polio-free Certificate from

A virologist at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Dr Olubusuyi Adewumi, who lauded the historic achievement, said that Africa had indeed successfully eradicated the wild polio virus.

Adewumi said that while the wild polio virus was responsible for most infections, there was also the rare form called vaccine-derived polio virus.

“Today marks the end of any circulation of wild type poliovirus in Nigeria and all of Africa.

“There are three subtypes of polio virus which are poliovirus type (PV1), type 2 (PV2), and type 3 (PV3).In a tweet, Gates said that the remarkable achievement was a step closer to global polio eradication.

A Jewish pediatrician who was convicted of possessing and distributing some 190,000 child pornography videos and images can serve as a medical supervisor at the Health Ministry’s student health services department, an Israeli court ruled last week:

"Avraham Barkai will be able to pay visits to schools but not treat children in his new position, which a panel of judges at the Nazareth Regional Labor Court determined that he should be allowed to fill, going against the recommendation of the Civil Service Commission.

Barkai was convicted in 2011 of being part of an international child pornography distribution ring and later sentenced to 18 months behind bars. However, the punishment was reduced on appeal to six months of community service, a nine-month suspended sentence and a NIS 20,000 ($5,690) fine.

For over a year up to his conviction, but after he had already been charged, Barkai continued to practice at a Haifa clinic of the Meuhedet HMO after a Health Ministry disciplinary committee ruled that he could continue to see children as long as a parent or nurse was in the room.

The disciplinary committee went on to rule that despite the charges, Barkai did not pose a danger to children as he had not been accused of physical acts against minors. As a result, it ruled that the pediatrician’s license should only be stripped for two years, and by July 2013 Barkai got his license back….

However, senior officials in the Health Ministry have come to Barkai’s defense. In 2014, the Health Ministry’s senior vice president of Administration and Human Resources, Dov Passat, submitted a letter to the disciplinary committee asserting that there should be nothing preventing Barkai from applying for tenders for positions as a pediatrician. The letter was submitted by Barkai as an official position of the Health Ministry to the Petah Tivka Magistrate’s Court, which ruled in 2018 that he be granted an exemption from the ban on employing convicted sex offenders as he does not pose a risk to the public, even if he works as a pediatrician.

In late 2018, a medical board voted unanimously to award Barkai a position as medical supervisor at the Health Ministry’s student health services department in the northern district. The Civil Service Commission subsequently interfered and blocked the appointment, stating in a 2019 hearing that “while the job at hand does not require clinical care for children, its core is oversight of student services and some of its assignments take place on school grounds and during the school day… Taking into account the nature of the offenses of which Dr. Barkai was convicted, [granting him this position] can greatly damage the image of the Civil Service Commission and the public’s confidence in its institutions.” "
