Air leak on the ISS forces the on-board astronauts to spend the weekend in the station's Russian segment while NASA hunts down the source

Three astronauts are going to spend the weekend in the Russian section of the International Space Station after a leak was detected somewhere onboard.

While in the Russian section the crew members will close all of the hatches on the station - allowing Earth-based experts to monitor air pressure levels and find the source of the leak.

Commander Chris Cassidy and his crewmates Ivan Vagner and Anatoly Ivanishin will stay in the Zvezda service module from Friday night into Monday morning.

NASA and Roscosmos said the situation represented no immediate danger to the crew or to the space station but that it was important to find the source.

The station’s atmosphere is maintained at a level of pressure designed to be comfortable for the crew members - a tiny bit of that air leaks out over time.

The leaks are a part of life for the 22-year-old orbiting laboratory which gets routine re-pressurisation thanks to nitrogen tanks delivered by cargo spacecraft.

'In September 2019, NASA and its international partners first saw indications of a slight increase above the standard cabin air leak rate,' NASA said in a statement.

Because of routine station operations like spacewalks and spacecraft arrivals and departures, it took time to realise what the measurement changes meant.

'The leak is still within segment specifications and presents no immediate danger to the crew or the space station,' NASA and Roscosmos said.

The test to find the source of the leak will involve ground staff monitoring air pressure levels over time - something that doesn't pose a risk to the crew.

The Zvezda module that will house the three crew members provides the living quarters that enabled permanent human habitation to begin nearly 20 years ago when the Expedition 1 crew arrived at the station November 2, 2000.

Cassidy, Vagner, and Ivanishin also will have access to the Poisk mini-research module and their Soyuz MS-16 crew ship for the duration of their stay.

A leak isn't a new thing for the ageing laboratory - they happen regularly including a controversial leak in 2018 that was suspected to have been human made.

Astronauts had to rush to fix a hole which appeared in the outer wall of a Russian Soyuz capsule that had been docked with the station for three months.

Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, conducted an investigation into the hole and compiled a dossier on the incident, but reports claim it will not disclose its findings.

This includes, it seems, its international collaborators on the ISS, including NASA.

Just days prior to their return to Earth, the cosmonauts endured a gruelling spacewalk that lasted almost eight hours to investigate the hole, using knives and shears to carve into the side of the ISS.

NASA claimed the astronauts on board were never in danger but images and further investigation revealed it was made from the inside.

The report on where this latest leak is should be known by the end of next week, according to NASA, who explained that once found astronauts can be directed to carry out repairs to stop it getting worse.

Israel Air Force prepares to train with Luftwaffe over Germany for first time

Monday exercise will be air force’s only international drill in 2020; Israeli aircraft to fly over Munich to mark 1972 Olympics massacre, and over Dachau to commemorate Holocaust

The Israeli Air Force will take part in its first ever exercise in Germany on Monday, flying dozens of sorties with the Luftwaffe and other NATO countries’ air forces, over the course of two weeks, the military said.

This will be the only international exercise to which the IAF will send aircraft this year, in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This exercise has great strategic importance and has immense influence on the air force, the IDF, and the State of Israel. Israeli-German relations and the arrival of Israeli Air Force planes on German soil is a historic event,” the IAF said.

On Tuesday, the IAF is also scheduled to perform a flyover with the German Air Force, flying over the Dachau concentration camp, in memory of the Holocaust, as well as over the outskirts of Munich, to commemorate the murder of 11 Israeli athletes in the 1972 Olympics, the military said.

Though the Israeli Air Force has performed flybys over former Nazi concentration camps before, this will be the first time that the German Luftwaffe will participate.

We will be “flying side by side with the Israeli Air Force for the first time in our history,” Ingo Gerhartz, chief of the German Air Force, told the German press agency dpa last Thursday.

According to the Israeli military, six F-16 fighter jets, two Gulfstream G550 command-and-control planes, and two Boeing 707 planes will travel to Germany for the two-week exercise.

“Holding this exercise at this time comes from a need to continue to hold exercises in unknown landscape, as part of the importance of preserving the fitness of the air force, of being able to deal with a variety of scenarios and in order to preserve the close cooperation between the [Israeli] Air Force and foreign air forces,” the military said.

The IAF said the exercise would include simulated dog-fights, air-to-ground attacks, advanced surface-to-air missile threats and operations behind enemy lines.

The air force’s flyby over Dachau and then Munich — known as “Memory for the Future” — will include the Israeli Gulfstream plane and F-16 fighter jets, along with two German Eurofighter jets.

The flyby will be led by IAF chief Amikam Norkin, who will fly the lead Gulfstream with his German counterpart Gerhartz; and the first female commander of an IAF air squadron, who can only be identified by her rank and first initial of her Hebrew name, Lt. Col. “Gimel.”

Following the flyby, a joint memorial ceremony will be held in Dachau, which will be attended by German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, Israeli Ambassador to Germany Jeremy Issacharoff, Norkin, Gerhartz and other attaches.

An IAF officer whose grandfather survived the Dachau concentration camp will speak at the ceremony, which will be broadcast live on the IDF’s social media channels.

Following the Dachau event, air force commanders Norkin and Gerhartz will hold a smaller memorial ceremony at the monument to the 11 Israeli athletes killed by Palestinian terrorists in the 1972 Munich Olympics, the IDF said.

President Trump on the centennial of the ratification 19th Amendment signed a pardon for the women’s suffrage icon Susan B. Anthony, who was arrested in 1872 for casting a ballot when women were not legally allowed to vote.

“She was never pardoned,” Trump said during a ceremony celebrating the 100th anniversary of the amendment that gave women the right to vote.

“What took so long?” Trump asked.

But some historians argue the women’s suffrage activist would have rejected the pardon, saying accepting the presidential clemency would have admitted guilt.

In response to the news Tuesday, the National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House in Rochester, New York, took to Twitter to decline the pardon on her behalf.

“On news of a presidential pardon for Susan B. Antony on August 18,2020: Objection! Mr. President, Susan B. Anthony must decline your offer of a pardon today!” the tweet from the museum said.

In a Twitter thread, the museum said Anthony called her trial for voting the “greatest outrage History ever witnessed.” She was not allowed to speak in her own defense because she was a woman. The judge in her trial also dismissed the jury and pronounced her guilty.

“She was outraged to be denied a trial by jury. She proclaimed, ‘I shall never pay a dollar of your unjust penalty,’” the museum wrote. “To pay would have been to validate the proceedings. To pardon Susan B. Anthony does the same.”

Historians said Anthony was proud of her arrest to draw attention to the cause for women’s rights and never paid the fine.

The museum said the best way to honor Anthony and other suffragists is to ensure that every person in the U.S. has access to the ballot box.

“If one wants to honor Susan B. Anthony today, a clear stance against any form of voter suppression would be welcome,” the museum said.

Russian hospital claims Putin critic Navalny wasn't poisoned, bars his medevac to Germany

The Russian opposition leader who is in a coma, possibly after being poisoned, is reportedly not being allowed to transfer out of a state-run hospital.

Alexei Navalny, prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was hospitalized this week after he suddenly became ill on a flight to Moscow from Siberia, and his spokesperson said that "We suspect that Alexei was poisoned by something mixed into [his] tea." On Friday, Navalny's spokesperson said he is not being permitted to transfer out of the state-run hospital where he's being treated, describing this refusal to let him leave as "an attempt on his life," CBS News reports. Doctors from Germany already arrived with the intention of transferring Navalny, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The hospital is claiming that Navalny's condition is too unstable for him to be transferred, The New York Times reports. Doctors also claim that "no poisons or traces of their presence" were found in Navalny's body and that "we do not believe that the patient has suffered poisoning," asserting that he suffered from "a sudden drop in blood sugar" due to a "metabolic disorder," per CBS.

But Navalny's wife, Yulia Navalnaya, alleges that officials aren't allowing him to be transported out of the hospital because they hope "to make the chemical substance that is in Alexey's body disappear," CNN reports. She added that "we of course cannot trust this hospital and we demand for Alexey to be given to us, so that we could have him treated in an independent hospital whose doctors we trust." Navalny's spokesperson also said, per the Journal, that the Russian doctors, "of course, didn’t make the decision, but the Kremlin did."

Frenchman dies, 9 injured in luxury hotel inferno in Spain

MADRID (AP) — A French tourist died in a fire at a luxury hotel in southern Spain and nine other people were injured Friday while trying to escape the flames, police said.

Video footage shared on social media showed people escaping the fire at the Sisu Boutique Hotel in Puerto Banus, Marbella, through windows and climbing down several stories of the building’s lattice facade.

It took more than three hours to extinguish the raging blaze, which broke out at 6 a.m. (0400 GMT), Malaga province’s civil protection agency said.

A National Police spokeswoman in the province confirmed that the only victim was a Frenchman who was staying at the hotel. The officer wasn’t authorized to be named in media reports.

Around 100 guests and employees were evacuated from the hotel as well as residents from a nearby building, authorities said.
