Despite 95% vaccination rate, Cornell today has five times more COVID cases than it did this time last year

ANALYSIS: If the goal is to prevent infection, the 95 percent vaccination rate on Cornell’s campus has not accomplished that
Cornell University has aggressively pushed its students to get vaccinated, announcing a vaccine mandate for the 2021-22 academic year in April and frequently denying religious and medical exemptions.
As a result, 95 percent of the campus population, both students and faculty, is vaccinated.
Despite this, Cornell University has more than five times the amount of confirmed positive cases during its first week of this academic year than it did during its first week of the 2020-21 academic year, according to the Cornell COVID dashboard.
By the numbers, during the first week of school that ran from Aug. 27 to Sept. 2 of this academic year, Cornell reported 322 positive COVID-19 cases.
In comparison, during the first week of school last year, which ran from Sept. 3 through Sept. 9 of 2020, Cornell reported 59 positive COVID-19 cases.
That is 263 more cases, or more than five times the amount of positive cases, when comparing the first week of school.
Most students attended in-person classes in the fall of 2020 and were required to wear masks, just like this academic year. The increase in positive cases cannot be attributed to an increase in testing — in fact, more tests were administered in the first week last fall, according to the Cornell COVID dashboard.
From Sept. 3 through Sept. 9 of 2020, there were 28,951 COVID tests administered, according to the Cornell COVID dashboard. There were only 59 positive tests, or a 0.2 percent positivity rate.
In contrast, from Aug. 27 to Sept. 2 of this year, only 27,103 tests were administered, finding 322 positive cases, or a 1.19 percent positivity rate.
No variable changed: Cornell announced in July that it would still require all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a mask while inside. The same public health measures, often criticized as too strict, that were in place last year remain in place this year.
Due to the high amount of positive cases the Ithaca campus is currently experiencing, President Martha Pollack warned classes may be moved online if the trend continues. Meanwhile, the campus has been moved to a “Code Yellow.”
If the goal is to prevent infection, the 95 percent COVID-19 vaccination rate on Cornell’s campus has not accomplished that.
As Cornell and many other universities across the country mandate these vaccines, one must ask: to what extent are the vaccines effective? Do the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks for healthy 20-year-olds?
In August, the CDC director admitted the COVID-19 vaccines cannot prevent transmission. Cornell’s recent case surge is further evidence of that.
The risk of an adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine, while minute, is not zero.
According to CDC and FDA data, the mRNA vaccines have been linked to increased risk of myocarditis, a serious heart condition, in young people, particularly young men. While this reaction to the vaccine is exceedingly rare, the connection between the mRNA vaccines and myocarditis is higher than previously thought.
Further, Dr. Robert Malone, one of the founders of mRNA vaccines, warned on evolutionary biologist Bret Weinstein’s podcast that the spike protein received from vaccination is, in his medical opinion, cytotoxic.
And according to information released by the Japanese government in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, the lipid particles from the Pfizer vaccine concentrate overwhelmingly in the ovaries and also bone marrow.
Why on earth would Cornell force its students to receive this vaccine?
To be clear, Americans who are elderly, immunocompromised, or suffer from a serious underlying condition should definitely get the vaccine. But even in those cases, they must still have the freedom to make such a decision for themselves.
Cornell’s draconian COVID-19 policies have failed, and now the administration’s promises about a normal, mask-free academic year in return for achieving “herd immunity” have come crashing down against the cold reality we all face.
If the vaccines cannot prevent infection and return us to normalcy, what then, is the point of returning to campus at all?

The state is on track to hit 70% of its adult population having received their first vaccine dose by Sunday, at which point the premier has promised to loosen restrictions - but only for the vaccinated.
"There is going to be a vaccinated economy, and you get to participate in that if you are vaccinated," Andrews stated. "We're going to move to a situation where, to protect the health system, we are going to lock out people who are not vaccinated and can be."
He added: "If you’re making the choice not to get vaccinated, then you’re making the wrong choice."

BlackRock Joins Blockchain Platform Axoni for Equity Swap Trades
BlackRock Inc. is embracing blockchain technology to make it easier to handle complex equity derivatives.
The world’s largest money manager joined Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Citigroup Inc. on a distributed-ledger system called Veris, according to a statement Tuesday from Axoni, the financial-technology company that operates the platform. The network is designed to help firms match and reconcile post-trade data on stock swaps.
The global market for equity-linked forwards and swaps is about $3.6 trillion, up more than $1 trillion from four years earlier, according to Bank for International Settlements data. With the surge in volume, traders can face challenges confirming the details of trades, cash flows between buyers and sellers and other changes that can occur over the life of the derivative transactions. Veris “will help us build scalability while mitigating risks in the investment life cycle beginning with equity swaps,” Mark Cox, BlackRock’s chief operating officer of global investment operations, said in the statement. “We see great potential in a distributed-ledger network for uncleared derivatives.” BlackRock will integrate New York-based Axoni’s software with its Aladdin operating system, which was first developed to help track its own financial risk but is now sold to wealth managers and other clients. Last year, the company earned more than $1 billion in technology services revenue. Bloomberg LP, the parent of Bloomberg News, also sells financial risk software.
JPMorgan Chase & Co., Andreessen Horowitz, Goldman and Citigroup are among Axoni’s investors.

EU supervisors urge implementation of global banking rules
The European Central Bank and national central banks across the European Union on Tuesday called for the bloc to fully implement remaining international banking capital rules agreed to prevent a repeat of the global financial crisis.
The final part of rules known as Basel III is now due to be implemented by Brussels after a delay due to the coronavirus pandemic which hit the European economy. In an open letter, nearly two dozen central bankers and regulators urged the Commission to stick to “the letter and the spirit” of the rules, which have been the object of intense lobbying from a banking industry keen to reduce its capital burden. “We, as prudential supervisors and central banks in the EU, very much support a full, timely and consistent implementation of all aspects of this framework,” the signatories said. “The pandemic shows that more resilient banks are better able to support the real economy, even during times of crisis.”
The open letter, addressed to Financial Services Commissioner Mairead McGuinness and her top official John Berrigan, was signed by the heads of institutions from all large EU countries with the exception of France. In a separate letter to McGuinness, the European Central Bank and the European Banking Authority, the bloc’s banking watchdog, stressed the need for “timely and faithful” implementation of the capital rules. “It is therefore crucial to avoid implementation approaches that would be inconsistent with international agreements and, in addition, would leave shortcomings in the existing framework relating to specific risks unaddressed,” the ECB and EBA letter said. Both letters defended the “output floor”, which limits large banks’ discretion in setting their own capital requirement, while warning against a “deviation” to a more flexible “parallel stack approach” defended by the European Banking Federation, a trade body, which had no immediate comment.
A full implementation of the output floor would increase capital requirements by 18.5% for EU banks, leaving them with a 52.2 billion euros ($61.92 billion) capital shortfall, based on calculations by regulators at the EBA as of last December. But the ECB and EBA said the overall increase in capital due to the new rules would not be significant, save for a few banks that have traditionally benefited the most from the current rules. A spokesperson for McGuinness said a legislative proposal due soon will meet the EU’s international commitments to implement Basel, but with adjustments to reflect the European banking sector. “The overarching objective will be to address remaining deficiencies in the banking prudential framework without incurring a significant increase in capital requirements overall,” the spokesperson added.
The central bankers also upheld a standardised approach to credit risk and said EU-specific deviations should be minimised.

It has been a week since the end of the American airlift that evacuated tens of thousands of Afghans out of Kabul, and there are still more questions than answers over who exactly they are, which ones have reached the U.S., how they were chosen and where they will end up.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who is in charge of the resettlement operations, promised to put American safety foremost. He has divulged little else so far.
The secretary did confirm that some people on security watchlists were among the Afghans evacuated and said they were being held. Officials were trying to work with other countries to figure out which ones could take them.

Mr. Mayorkas declined to speculate on how many total Afghans would be resettled in the U.S. but said the number was higher than 50,000.
He said the Biden administration expected to help more Afghans leave their country, so any count would be premature.
He projected confidence in the mission, though.
“We can do this, and we can protect the American public, and we can pronounce through our actions the generosity and nobility of the American public,” he said.
Republicans are growing restless with the lack of solid information.
Chairman Andy Biggs, Arizona Republican, and fellow members of the House Freedom Caucus said in a letter to Mr. Mayorkas that it was time to divulge whether the government collected fingerprints from every person brought to the U.S. under the homeland security secretary’s parole powers.
He asked for a full explanation of how the government vetted people rushing to board airplanes to flee Afghanistan.
Mr. Biggs also demanded to know how Mr. Mayorkas’ department was monitoring the 20,000 Afghans already on U.S. soil and what would happen to those later found to be security risks.
“We have all watched the chaotic evacuation scenes play out in Afghanistan. It has raised serious questions on who is being brought into our country,” the congressman told The Washington Times. “We need to ensure that these individuals are being properly vetted and do not pose a risk to our communities. American safety must be prioritized.”
He cited reporting by The Washington Times on a 47-year-old Afghan citizen who made it to the U.S. on an evacuation flight despite having a rape conviction and deportation on his record. He also cited multiple news reports that authorities had matched as many as 100 evacuated Afghans to government watch lists.
Rep. Thomas P. Tiffany, Wisconsin Republican, has kept close tabs on Fort McCoy, one of eight U.S. military bases holding Afghans.
He wrote to resettlement organizations in his state that will help the Afghans once they leave the fort. He told the organizations that they will bear the burden of monitoring the arrivals and reporting any suspicious activity to the Department of Homeland Security.
“You must exercise due diligence by observing, asking questions, and sharing any significant information with the appropriate authorities,” he wrote. “Americans are counting on you.”
Members of Congress reacted with outrage to reports that airlift evacuees included “child brides” and families with multiple wives.
Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican, called the situation “an acute human rights crisis.”
“Every Biden-Harris official linked to this disgrace should and must be held accountable,” he said.
Mr. Mayorkas said in a briefing Friday that his department is overseeing multiple layers of security checks, including at military bases overseas, on flights to the U.S. and upon arrival at airports.
The secretary confirmed that officials had flagged worrying figures airlifted out of Afghanistan. He said they were not permitted to enter the U.S.
“We are working with our international allies to address the disposition of those individuals,” he said.
The deported rapist about whom The Times reported last week was flagged by Customs and Border Protection officers at Dulles International Airport and was placed in a detention facility run by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
More than 120,000 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan, and 40,000 of them have reached the U.S.
Some were U.S. citizens, some were legal permanent residents of other nationalities and some were Afghans who assisted the American military’s efforts and either earned a special visa or were on a path to do so.
Mr. Mayorkas said the U.S. is bringing in others, including “vulnerable Afghan women and girls, journalists and other constituencies that need our relief.”
He could not say how many are special visa holders and how many are being brought into the country under his humanitarian parole powers. His department later issued a fact sheet saying most will be brought to the U.S. through parole.
Pentagon officials have confirmed that a majority of people with claims to the special visa were not evacuated, breaking an American promise.
Ten Republican senators late last week fired off a letter to President Biden demanding to know what the U.S. would do for them.
Parole is good for two years and gives the arrivals a chance to apply for more permanent legal status, such as asylum.
Parolees will be issued work permits with conditions such as medical screenings, vaccinations and regular check-ins.
All arrivals, including U.S. citizens, are being tested for COVID-19. The government is picking up the bill.
U.S. citizens and legal residents can head home once they clear testing. Parolees are encouraged to go to one of eight military bases, where government employees are processing them and providing adjustment assistance.
Mr. Mayorkas indicated that going to a military base was voluntary, and one congressman told The Times that some Afghans walked off a base in Wisconsin.

A poll on Friday revealed the majority of Americans hold President Joe Biden responsible for the deaths of 13 U.S. servicemembers and 170 Afghans, according to Washington Post-ABC News.
Before asking the question, the poll prefaced that 13 “members of the U.S. military and at least 170 Afghans were killed near the Kabul airport in a suicide bombing by the Islamic State.”
“How much, if at all, do you blame this attack on Biden’s handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan – a great deal, a good amount, not much, or not at all?” the poll asked.
Fifty-three percent blamed Biden, 38 percent blaming him a “great deal” and 15 percent a “good amount.”
Forty-three percent blame him less than others, which includes 22 percent “not much” and 21 percent “not at all.” Only four percent had no opinion.
Holding Biden responsible for the deaths in Afghanistan mirrors the 52 percent of respondents who disapprove of Biden’s handling of the withdrawal, though 77 percent still support former President Trump’s initial idea of withdrawal:

Overall, respondents in the poll only gave Biden a 44 percent approval rating. Of the 44 percent, only 24 percent strongly approve of Biden, while 19 percent somewhat approve of him.
A majority disapprove of Biden’s job performance. Fifty-one percent disapprove, including 9 percent who somewhat disapprove and 42 percent who strongly disapprove.
The polling comes after up to 200 Americans are still trapped in Afghanistan, but it is unknown exactly how many Americans still remain. The White House’s initial count of Americans in Afghanistan before the country collapsed was about 11,000. Biden said in his non-primetime speech after the deadly evacuation that he decided to leave ten percent of those Americans behind.
The poll sampled 754 individuals and has a margin of error of 1.4 percent.

In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News on Thursday, former commander of British forces in Afghanistan Colonel Richard Kemp blasted President Biden’s exit from Afghanistan, claiming it was worse than 9/11 and calling it “the greatest victory for jihadists” and “a blow for American prestige” which won’t recover for decades.
Kemp also warned of new threats in the wake of unfolding events there, including another refugee crisis and emboldened adversaries such as Iran, Russia, and China.
The former commander who led British forces in Afghanistan in 2003 and later joined the committee supervising the country’s intelligence services, began by describing the unfolding events in Afghanistan as “the greatest foreign affairs and military catastrophe since the Second World War, without a doubt.”

“If you combine the Vietnam fiasco and Suez [Crisis] for the British, it’s worse than the two of those combined in its magnitude and its implications,” he stated.
He also described recent events there in light of the Biden administration’s chaotic exit as worse than the 2001 September 11 attacks — the deadliest terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.
“It’s certainly worse than 9/11 which was maybe the result of intelligence failure and possibly could have been prevented,” he said, adding that they were “surprise” attacks, “whereas this is a self-inflicted wound.”

Calling it a “result of a deliberate policy decision” by the U.S. president “against the advice of his generals,” Kemp described the “complete disaster” of a withdrawal as “completely avoidable.”
“It basically ceded a huge amount of authority and power and influence in the world from the West to the authoritarian states of Iran and North Korea, but particularly China and Russia,” he said.
He also accused the Biden administration of having “undermined the efforts that have been recently discussed in Britain, America and the G7, and elsewhere about trying to work to persuade or entice those countries… considering coming into the sphere of influence of China and Russia.”
“It’s basically prevented that from happening really because these countries that we wanted to encourage to join our sphere of influence are going to be asking why they would do that when the U.S., and the West more widely, is a fair-weather ally,” he said.
“When it gets difficult, they get out,” he added, “and Russia and China will be more reliable friends.”
He also claimed that the recent U.S. actions “will certainly inspire Russia and China to push harder against us, knowing that they will not be met with much resistance.”

“They already thought the West was weak, and now they think it’s weaker than originally thought,” he said.
“Basically it’s a real blow for American prestige which will not be recovered from probably for decades,” he added.

Guinea coup upends China strategy as aluminum prices soar
Beijing's dependence on Australia rises while uncertainty clouds African source.
The coup in Guinea appears likely to keep aluminum prices at historic highs for the foreseeable future, as the West African country home to the world's largest reserves of bauxite is mired in political uncertainty. No country will be impacted more than China, the leading aluminum producer globally and the biggest consumer of bauxite, from which the production material is derived.
Sunday's coup also may have implications for Beijing's geopolitical strategies. Any inability to import resources from Guinea inevitably will raise China's dependence on Australia, a country with which Beijing's relations have soured over Canberra's call for an independent investigation into the origins of the coronavirus. "China opposes coup attempts to seize power and calls for the immediate release of President Alpha Conde," Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Monday. It was a rare condemnation from Beijing, which advocates for noninterference in the internal affairs of other countries.
Aluminum is used in a host of products from construction material and automobile parts to drink cans, all which are important to China. Prices for aluminum ore bauxite from Guinea hit their highest in almost 18 months in China on Monday, though no mines reported any disruption. Even before the coup, international aluminum prices had touched a high not seen in a decade. Droughts in China caused power shortages that led to disruptions in aluminum output. 55% of the bauxite imported by China in the January-July period came from Guinea, according to China's General Administration of Customs. The high resource prices are set to bite China as the country prepares a new wave of infrastructure investments to prop up an economy showing signs of a slowdown. If China were to seek alternative sources of bauxite, Australia waits in the wings. Canberra accounted for 31% of Beijing's imports in the same period.
Bilateral tensions escalated in April 2020 after Australia called for an independent, international inquiry into the origins of COVID-19. Upset that it was not consulted beforehand, China has since engaged in what some call economic warfare with Australia, restricting imports on a wide range of items including resources. In the long term, Beijing saw Guinea as an alternative source for iron ore, a key material in steelmaking. China relies on Australia for more than 60% of its iron ore imports, and the resource has been one of the few items not to fall under an import ban. Guinea is home to Simandou, a 110 km range of hills said to hold the world's largest reserve of untapped high-quality iron ore. If China could help Guinea unlock this potential, it could elevate the West African country into an iron ore export powerhouse alongside Australia and Brazil. This economic potential has led China to become one of the biggest funding sources for Guinea. In 2019, Guinea's outstanding debt obligations to China equaled 5% of its gross domestic product, according to the World Bank. That share exceeds the debts owed to the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund.
Chinese President Xi Jinping established a close relationship with Conde, Guinea's now-deposed president. The two men have met on multiple occasions. Last year, Xi was quick to send a message congratulating Conde on his third presidential election victory, despite accusations from the opposition of fraud. Conde's October 2020 election win was made possible by constitutional changes he rammed through, allowing for a third term. The results touched off protests among citizens and deadly clashes with security forces. Xi has said he wants to promote greater development of the "comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership" between the two countries. Guinea was one of the first countries to receive Chinese-made COVID-19 vaccines in March. Pandemic-related woes, as well as rising taxes and fuel prices, exacerbated public grievances with Conde's government. Things came to a head on Sunday when an elite army unit led by Lt. Col. Mamady Doumbouya carried out the coup.

The president of the United States is supposed to be the leader of the free world. But President Joe Biden is now taking his directions from the Taliban.
On Tuesday, the Biden administration announced that it would not be extending its Aug. 31 deadline to pull American troops out of Afghanistan. There is no guarantee that all American citizens will have been evacuated by then, especially those who are outside Kabul.
Over the last few days, Americans have been horrified by accounts of the Taliban beating U.S. citizens. The Taliban and the chaos outside the airport prevented some U.S. citizens from reaching safety. The U.S. Embassy also sent conflicting messages about what U.S. citizens should do. Despite Mr. Biden’s assurances, even Democrats are openly acknowledging that if he insists on this timeline, people will be left behind.
“You’re not going to get everybody out,” said Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., as reported by ABC News. “You may get the vast majority of American citizens out.”
That is obviously unacceptable. Things look even worse for the Afghans who helped the United States during the war. The Taliban is already reportedly looking for and executing them. Now, it says it won’t allow any Afghans to leave the country. To the U.S.’s shame, Mr. Biden appears ready to condemn many of them to death.
On Tuesday, Fox News reported that the G7 nations had agreed to tell the Taliban that they would be staying past Aug. 31. But Biden didn’t go along. He’s working on the Taliban’s timeline, and the Taliban wouldn’t agree to allow U.S. troops to stay any longer.
This is a new low, even for the man who opposed the raid to take out Osama bin Laden.
Mr. Biden’s failures aren’t limited to a willingness to leave U.S. citizens and our Afghan allies in the hands of a murderous regime. Over the last 20 years, the U.S. spent tens of billions of dollars on weapons for the Afghan security forces. Much of that is now in the hands of the Taliban. That includes machine guns, Humvees and night vision goggles. Hopefully, the Taliban doesn’t have the logistical capacity to operate the Black Hawk helicopters it captured.
As we near the anniversary of 9/11, it’s likely that Mr. Biden has left the Taliban better armed and more powerful than the U.S. found them 20 years ago.
He’s shredded the U.S.’s credibility with our allies as well. They openly doubt our willingness to stand alongside them in the future.
The U.S. has the strongest military in the history of the world. But even our armed forces can be crippled by a weak, incompetent president. It’s obvious to the Taliban, our allies and our enemies that’s exactly what Mr. Biden is.

President Joe Biden hopes people will soon forget the unfolding disaster he created in Afghanistan so he can turn back to issues such as COVID, the economy, and climate change. But he and his White House don't realize just how damaging Afghanistan has been to the president’s credibility, undermining his ability to govern on every other issue.
The fundamental problem for Biden is that his claims about the situation in Afghanistan are clearly untrue, indeed, frankly incredible.
Biden claimed during a White House press conference that al Qaeda had been completely driven out of Afghanistan. Hours later, Defense Department press secretary John Kirby could do nothing but admit that this was false. Al Qaeda is not only operating throughout Afghanistan, but according to a Pentagon inspector general report released earlier in the week, the Taliban continue to maintain their “relationship with Al Qaeda, providing safe haven for the terrorist group in Afghanistan.”
Biden also claimed during that same press conference that there was “no indication” that Americans stuck in Kabul “haven’t been able to get” to the airport. The press conference hadn’t been over for more than half an hour before CNN’s Clarrisa Ward made clear the exact opposite. “It is extremely difficult, and it is dangerous,” she reported on American efforts to reach the airport in Kabul.
Biden even claimed that he had “seen no question of our credibility from our allies around the world.” Either Biden is forgetting what he reads or else his briefers left out the leader of Germany's conservative party calling Biden’s handling of Afghanistan “the greatest debacle that NATO has seen.” Biden also must have missed British Member of Parliament Tom Tugendhat saying it was “the biggest foreign policy disaster since Suez.”
The average American doesn’t know who Tom Tugendhat is, but he does know our allies are not happy with Biden’s handling of Afghanistan. And anyone can see on television that the situation is much more chaotic and violent than Biden promised it would be just a month ago.
Biden's false statements and empty promises are undermining him on every other issue. A recent CBS poll found Biden’s overall approval rating had fallen 8 points since April to an even 50%-50% split. But the percentage of respondents who described Biden as “competent” fell from 56% to 49%, the percentage who described him as “focused” fell from 56% to 48%, and the percentage who described their leader as “effective” fell from 55% to 47%.
An Echelon Insights poll found that Biden’s approval rating had also fallen on every issue tested, including COVID, the economy, foreign policy, and immigration. Worse for Biden, the latest Reuters poll found he had the first negative overall approval rating (46% approve/49% disapprove) of his presidency. Meanwhile, the share who believe the country is heading in the wrong direction rose to 59%.
It is no coincidence that centrist House Democrats are refusing to go along with Biden’s radical $3.5 trillion spending plan now that he has been weakened by Afghanistan. Voters don’t trust Biden on any issue other than COVID, so why should centrist Democrats tie themselves to Biden’s far-left legislative agenda?
Biden has only himself to blame for the political disaster that is enveloping him. If he always knew pulling out of Afghanistan was going to be chaotic, then he shouldn’t have said just a month earlier that it was going to go smoothly. He can't fix that now. What he can do, however, is change the bragging, blustering, dishonest habits of a lifetime, learn some humility, take criticism seriously, and stop talking nonsense about everything being OK in Kabul.

NYT Op-Ed Writer, FBI Most Wanted Terrorist Named Taliban’s Interior Minister
Sirajuddin Haqqani, the leader of the U.S.-designated terrorist group Haqqani Network, was named the Taliban’s interior minister Tuesday.
The FBI offers $5 million for information leading to the arrest of Haqqani, whose group has deep ties to al-Qaida. He is accused of organizing a 2008 bombing at the Kabul Serena Hotel that killed six people, including an American, and an assassination attempt on then-Afghan president Hamid Karzai.

Haqqani attempted to soften the Taliban’s image via a 2020 op-ed in The New York Times in which he claimed that his group was “committed to working with other parties in a consultative manner of genuine respect to agree on a new, inclusive political system.”
“We together will find a way to build an Islamic system in which all Afghans have equal rights, where the rights of women that are granted by Islam — from the right to education to the right to work — are protected, and where merit is the basis for equal opportunity,” he wrote.
The Haqqani Network, founded by Sirajuddin’s father Jalaluddin, has allied with the Taliban since the 1980s and 90s, when the groups opposed the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Jalaluddin was a close ally of Osama Bin Laden until the al-Qaida chief’s death in 2011.
“Relations between the Taliban, especially the Haqqani Network, and al-Qaida remain close, based on friendship, a history of shared struggle, ideological sympathy and intermarriage,” a United Nations (UN) Security Council report published in May 2020 found. According to the report, “the Taliban regularly consulted with al–Qaida during negotiations with the United States and offered guarantees that it would honor their historical ties.” (RELATED: ‘Al-Qaida, ISIS, The Haqqani Network’: Liz Cheney Warns Of Renewed Terrorist Threat)
“The Haqqanis expose the lie that there is a line between Taliban and other jihadist groups, especially al-Qaida,” former National Security Adviser HR McMaster told the Wall Street Journal in August.
The Taliban named Sirajuddin’s uncle, Khalil Haqqani, Kabul security chief in August, shortly after it took the city. Anas Haqqani, Sirajuddin’s brother, was released from prison in 2019 as part of an exchange.

EXCLUSIVE: House Republicans Launch Investigation Into EPA Official’s Continued Ties With Chinese Government-Controlled University
Republican members of the House Oversight Committee sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday demanding the agency provide records related to a political appointee’s continued ties with a Chinese government-controlled university.
The Daily Caller News Foundation previously reported that EPA Deputy Assistant Administrator for Science Policy Dr. Christopher Frey, who was appointed by President Joe Biden in early February, disclosed in his ethics recusal statement that he had taken an unpaid leave of absence from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The ex officio chancellor of the university, Carrie Lam, is also Beijing’s hand-picked bureaucrat to serve as the chief executive of Hong Kong.
The watchdog group Protect the Public’s Trust, which first obtained Frey’s recusal statement, said the university is effectively an arm of the Chinese government and that “one can presume from the leave that [Frey] plans to return to his employment with the Chinese government upon completing his tenure at EPA.” (RELATED: Biden EPA Appointee Allowed To Retain Ties With University Controlled By Chinese Government)
South Carolina Republican Rep. Ralph Norman, the ranking member of the Environment Subcommittee of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, wrote in a letter Tuesday to EPA Administrator Michael Regan that Frey’s continued professional ties with the university raise concern about his ability to fulfill the duties of his office, which is tasked with conducting research that serves as the basis for EPA decision making related to safeguarding human health and ecosystems from environmental pollutants.
“Instead of resigning his position with HKUST, he is only taking a leave of absence, indicating Dr. Frey intends to return to work for KHUST after his service in the Biden Administration,” the letter states. “At a time when the Biden Administration is pushing for costly climate change ‘solutions’ that benefit China, it raises questions about why a senior EPA official has such strong ties to China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases.”
Norman’s letter demanded the EPA provide documents to his committee related to Frey’s affiliation with HKUST and any communications he has had since his appointment with anyone affiliated with the university.
The EPA stood by its decision to allow Frey to retain his relationship with KHUST.
“Consistent with White House policy over several administrations, political appointees (with the exception of Senate-confirmed appointees) are permitted to take a leave of absence from an academic institution during their government tenure, provided that the required recusals are in place to avoid a potential or actual conflict of interest,” EPA spokesman Timothy Carroll previously told the DCNF. “Dr. Frey has executed the appropriate recusal statement and will continue to follow the guidance of ethics officials.”
Protect the Public’s Trust Director Michael Chamberlain applauded the Republican lawmakers for investigating Frey’s ties to China.
