R3 PanSTARRS: An Orion Comet

Comet R3 PanSTARRS might be best remembered as an Orion comet. A key reason is because Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) was near its most spectacular in terms of tail visibility when passing in front of the iconic constellation. Although rare, other bright comets, too, have ventured across Orion, including Lovejoy in 2015, Hale-Bopp in 1997, and the Great Comet of 1264. Best visible in long duration exposures, the featured image was captured last week from the Craigieburn Mountain Range in New Zealand. Visible in the deep background image are the Orion Nebula, Barnard's Loop, and through R3's tail, the bright star Saiph, the sixth brightest star in the constellation of Orion. Comet R3 PanSTARRS continues to fade as it moves further south, passing into the constellation of the Unicorn (Monoceros) in the next few days.

U.S. moving to indict Cuba's Raúl Castro, sources say.

The U.S. is taking steps to indict Raúl Castro, the 94-year-old former president of Cuba and brother of Fidel,in connection with the downing of planes 30 years ago, according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

The potential indictment — which would need to be approved by a grand jury — isexpected to focus on Cuba's deadly 1996 shootdown of planes operated by humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue.

A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment.

The plan comes as the U.S. heaps pressure on the Cuban government. The Trump administration has threatened heavy tariffs on any country that exports oil to Cuba, leading to energy shortages as oil shipments are largely cut off. President Trump has pressed for major reforms in Cuba and has floated a "friendly takeover" of the country.

The pressure on Cuba began to pick up in January, after the U.S. military removed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power and flew him to New York to face drug charges. Venezuela was a key partner of Cuba's before the operation.

Raúl Castro formally stepped down as the leader of Cuba's Communist Party in 2021, but he is still widely seen as one of the most powerful figures in the country. His grandson Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro, known as "Raulito," is viewed as both a representative of the 94-year-old and a key point of contact between the U.S. and Cuba.

Miami's top federal prosecutor several months ago spearheaded a new initiative targeting Cuban communist leaders. That initiative, which involves federal and local law enforcement and theU.S. Treasury Department, is pursuing prosecutions involving economic crimes, drugs, violent crimes and immigration-related violations, with a focus ontargeting those in the Communist Party leadership, CBS News previously reported.

The incident that could ultimately lead to Castro's indictment dates back to February 1996, when two Cessnas operated by Brothers to the Rescue — anexile group that searched for Cubans seeking to flee the island on rafts — were shot down by a Cuban MiG-29 fighter jet, killing four people.

A report by the Organization of American States found theplanes were shot down outside Cuban airspace, and alleged thatCuba violated international law by shooting without warningand without evidence that it was necessary. The incident drew outrage at the time, with President Bill Cinton condemning it "in the strongest possible terms.”

Cuban officials have argued the shootdown was legitimate, claiming the group had violated Cuban airspace and sought to carry out acts of sabotage on infrastructure.

Fidel Castro told "CBS Evening News" anchor Dan Rather the Cuban military was acting on his "general orders" to stop planes from encroaching on the country. At the time of the Brothers to the Rescue shootdown, Fidel — who died in 2016 — was the country's leader, and Raúl led the armed forces.

One person, Gerardo Hernandez, was convicted in the U.S. of murder conspiracy in connection with the shootdown, after federal prosecutors alleged he was part of a spy ring that sought to pass on information about Brothers to the Rescue to the Cuban intelligence service. He was sentenced to life in prison, but was sent to Cuba in a 2014 prisoner swap.

Earlier this year, Florida's attorney general said at a news conference in Marchthat he was re-opening a shuttered state investigation into the same 1996 plane incident.

Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott and other Florida lawmakers have also recently called on the Justice Department to charge Castro and bring him to justice in the United States.

In a social media post Thursday evening in response to the CBS News report, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wrote,"Let 'er rip, it's been a long time coming!"

Bill to Ban Terrorists’ Family Members from Living in U.S. Introduced by Sen. Cotton

A bill that would revoke existing visas from the close family members of terrorists and prohibit future ones from being obtained has been introduced by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) following reports that Iranian regime officer Qasem Soleimani’s niece and grandniece were legally living in the U.S.

While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) arrested both the niece and grandniece of the notorious Iranian general in April, the agency revealed that 47-year-old Hamideh Soleimani Afshar and 25-year-old Sarinasadat Hosseiny had both been granted asylum by immigration judges in 2019.

Despite claiming “asylum” status, the elder niece filed a naturalization application in July 2025 in which she disclosed that she traveled back to Iran at least four times since being issued a green card, DHS said.

Soleimani was killed in January 2020 by a U.S. drone strike near Baghdad International Airport.

On Thursday, Cotton introduced the “No Safe Haven for Terrorist Families Act,” which would end the allowance for close relatives of such terrorist figures to live in the U.S.

The bill’s text outlines a new, permanent ground of inadmissibility that prevents spouses, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews of dangerous foreign adversaries from receiving any American visa or otherwise being allowed to move to the country.

If the bill passes, it would also require the secretary of state to revoke any existing visa held by one of the aforementioned family members within 30 days of discovering their inadmissible status.

“Relatives of terrorists have no business being in our country,” Cotton said in an exclusive quote to Breitbart News. “My bill would revoke visas from family members of terrorists to keep Arkansans safer.”

US Sells 30-Year Bonds at 5 Percent Yield for First Time Since 2007

Energy-price shocks, inflation fears, and rising deficits are rattling global bond markets from Washington to Tokyo and London.

The U.S. federal government has sold 30-year debt at auction at a yield above 5 percent for the first time since 2007.

The Treasury Department sold $25 billion of new 30-year bonds on May 13, with the auction yield reaching 5.046 percent.

Treasury bond yields represent the return investors receive for lending to the U.S. government over different periods. They move in the opposite direction to prices, meaning higher yields usually reflect falling bond prices or investors demanding a better return to buy the debt.

The auction was part of the Treasury’s wider May refunding plan. On May 6, the Treasury said it would sell $58 billion in three-year notes, $42 billion in 10-year notes, and $25 billion in 30-year bonds, while raising $41.7 billion in new cash from private investors.

The rise in borrowing costs has been driven partly by an energy shock linked to the Iran war, which has lifted inflation and reduced expectations that the Federal Reserve will soon be able to cut interest rates.

On May 11, a host of global brokerages recast their projections for U.S. rate cuts in 2026, as the 10-week-old Middle East war has pushed energy prices higher.

“Global yields have probably come to the point where they are high enough to hurt sentiment. Between a resilient global economy powered by AI build-out and elevated energy prices, central banks are probably more worried about inflation,” DBS Bank senior rates strategist Eugene Leow said on May 15.

Daniel von Ahlen, senior macro strategist at GlobalData TS Lombard, said on May 15 that we are seeing “a reset of this global bond risk premium because the market is just realising we’re living in a much more volatile inflation climate.”

In a May 13 post on X, Jim Bianco, president and macro strategist at Bianco Research, said the U.S. 30-year yield was “now 5.03 percent.”

“It has only been higher for a handful of days in the last 19 years. And it is now just 8 basis points from a new 19-year high,” he said.

The pressure has not been limited to the United States.

Investors are reassessing inflation, interest rates, and Japan’s government borrowing needs.

Japan’s 10-year government bond yield hit its highest level since May 1997, according to Jiji Press, which cited Japan Bond Trading Co.

“Against a backdrop of market wariness over fiscal expansion and other factors, the long-term interest rate could reach 3 percent within this year,” Katsutoshi Inadome, senior strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management Co., told the publication on May 15.

Jiji said Japan’s bond market was also weighed down by concerns about accelerating inflation, as the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is expected to persist.

German and Italian bonds also came under pressure in early European trading.

Italian 10-year yields rose almost 11 basis points to around 3.89 percent, bringing the rise for the week to nearly 16 basis points. Benchmark German Bund yields climbed almost 7 basis points to around 3.12 percent.

In the UK, 10-year gilt yields hit their highest level since July 2008, reaching 5.137 percent amid political uncertainty and global inflation, raising concerns in London.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership has come under pressure after Labour suffered heavy losses in local and regional elections last week, while Nigel Farage’s Reform UK made sweeping gains.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is weighing up a possible leadership challenge, unsettling investors.

“A process involving Burnham promises to be more protracted and ‘noisy’, thereby ​prolonging and exacerbating the uncertainty about the political situation in the UK,” AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould said on May 15.

NASA, Industry Prepare Cryogenic Fuel Technology Demo

NASA is collaborating with Eta Space of Rockledge, Florida, on an in‑orbit technology demonstration to advance a key capability for future deep space missions.

The Liquid Oxygen Flight Demonstration, or LOXSAT, will test cryogenic fluid management technologies necessary for creating in-space propellant depots, essentially gas stations in space, that could support long-term exploration.

During a nine-month mission, LOXSAT will demonstrate 11 cryogenic fluid management technologies. Eta Space built LOXSAT as part of a NASA Tipping Point opportunity, and Rocket Lab is providing spacecraft and launch services to deliver it to low Earth orbit.

The LOXSAT payload has been integrated with a Rocket Lab Photon satellite bus and will launch aboard the company’s Electron rocket from Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand’s Mahia Peninsula no earlier than July 17.

The technologies that LOXSAT will demonstrate were selected to address the core challenges of using cryogenic, or super-cold, propellants in microgravity, including reducing boiloff, transferring propellant, maintaining tank pressure, and gauging propellant levels.

Data collected from these tests will support development of future in-space propellant depots that could refuel spacecraft as they journey to the Moon, Mars, or other deep space destinations.

NASA’s LOXSAT team is composed of members of the Cryogenic Fluid Management Portfolio Project from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, and Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The cryogenic portfolio’s work is part of NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate and includes more than 20 individual technology development activities.

Hubble Sights Galaxy in Transition

This NASA Hubble Space Telescope image reveals an enigmatic galaxy with a bright center and a face that hints at spiral structure, yet it holds no obvious spiral arms.

Reddish-brown clumps and filaments of dust partially obscure the galaxy’s full face, while red, blue, and orange light from distant galaxies shines through its diffuse outer regions and dots the inky-black background.

NGC 1266 is a lenticular galaxy located some 100 million light-years away in the constellation Eridanus (the Celestial River).

Astronomers classify lenticulars as transitional galaxies that represent an evolutionary bridge between spirals and ellipticals.

Lenticulars are “lens-shaped” and have a bright central bulge and flattened disk like spirals, but they have no spiral arms and little to no star formation like ellipticals.

As interesting as this galaxy’s structure and lenticular classification are, those traits aren’t its most intriguing features. NGC 1266 is a rare post-starburst galaxy that is in transition between a galaxy that experienced a major burst of star formation and a quieter elliptical galaxy.

Post-starburst galaxies have a young population of stars but few star-forming regions. Roughly one percent of the local galaxy population is a post-starburst galaxy.

Astronomers think that NGC 1266 had a minor merger with another galaxy some 500 million years ago. The merger spurred the formation of new stars and increased the mass of the galaxy's central bulge while funneling gas into its supermassive black hole.

The additional matter made the black hole much more active, creating an active galactic nucleus or AGN. The black hole’s increased activity would have generated powerful winds and jets of gas along its axis of rotation.

Over time, the burst of new stars and the black hole’s powerful jets would deplete the galaxy’s reservoir of star-forming gas, while the turbulence generated in these processes suppressed new stars from forming in the gas that remained.

Observations by Hubble and other observatories reveal a strong outflow of gas from the galaxy and that the space between its stars is shocked or highly disturbed.

Researchers found that any remaining stellar nurseries are in the core of the galaxy, and that very little to no star formation happens beyond that core.

These observations suggest the supermassive black hole in the galaxy’s heart may be suppressing star birth by stripping or ejecting star-forming gas from the galaxy.

The shockwaves from this process would create turbulence that disturbs the gas and dust between stars enough to stop any remaining matter from gravitationally condensing into infant stars.

Post-starburst galaxies like NGC 1266 are ideal subjects for astronomers to study the complex physical processes that suppress star formation.

They help us better understand the evolution of galaxies and how supermassive black holes interact with their hosts.

SpaceX / NASA CRS-34 Mission

SpaceX is targeting Friday, May 15, for Falcon 9’s launch of Dragon’s 34th Commercial Resupply Services (CRS-34) mission for NASA to the International Space Station from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

Liftoff is targeted for 6:05 p.m. ET.

A live webcast of this mission will begin about 20 minutes prior to liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX. You can also watch the webcast on the X TV app.

CRS-34 is the sixth flight of the Dragon spacecraft supporting this mission, which previously flew CRS-22, CRS-24, CRS-27, CRS-30, and CRS-32 to and from the space station.

After an approximate 36-hour flight, Dragon will autonomously dock with the orbiting laboratory on Sunday, May 17, at around 7:00 a.m. ET.

This will be the sixth flight of the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched KF-01, IMAP, NROL-77, GPS III-9, and one Starlink mission.

The U.S. Air Force Security Forces members of Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado, stand guard every day, ready to the defend the U.S. Space Force installation, its assets and its people.

Like many other law enforcement officers, these defenders remain ready and are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, to lay down their lives in the line of duty. Because of their dedication, these defenders are celebrated during National Police Week.

Originating in 1962, Peace Officers Memorial Day was created by congress and signed as Public Law 87-726 by President Kennedy, designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week it falls on as National Police Week.

However, it wouldn’t be until 20 years later, in 1982, that the first Peace Officers’ Memorial Service would be held. This small gathering at Senate Park in Washington D.C, was hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police, sparking the emergence of events that would celebrate law enforcement officers for years to come.

“Police Week is important because it recognizes the dedication and sacrifices of Security Forces members,” said Senior Airmen Giana Couch, 50th Security Forces Squadron member.

“Our career field often requires long hours, heavy gear and the ability to handle difficult situations professionally. Being acknowledged for that commitment helps reinforce morale and reminds us that our efforts are valued.”

National Police Week serves as a chance to highlight the sacrifices made by defenders, celebrate their service and honor those who have fallen in line of duty.

While scanning common access cards at the gate and pulling over traffic offenders on base are their most outward facing jobs, Security Forces members also play a critical role in protecting mission assets.

“I’m responsible for ensuring personnel and mission critical resources are safeguarded,” said Tech. Sgt. Korey Evans, 50th SFS, noncommissioned officer in charge of installation security.

“I must do my job efficiently to reduce vulnerabilities before adversaries could potentially exploit them. The oversight of my job ensures the installation is meeting major command requirements while ensuring a no fail mission.”

Being a member of Security Forces, Airmen must make hard decisions, stay calm in stressful situations and have the courage to defend others. National Police Week is celebrated to display the important role these defenders play in the service of others.

“In the future, I hope to see greater participation from members of other career fields during Police Week events,” said Couch.

“Increased involvement would give them a better understanding of how Security Forces trains, operates and supports the broader mission, while also strengthening camaraderie across the installation.”

This image, captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, gives us a glimpse of Ecuador’s capital, Quito, sprawling for 40 km along this high-altitude valley in the Andes.

At an elevation of 2850 m above sea level, Quito is the only capital city in the world built so close to an active volcano. It is dominated by Pichincha to the west but there are several other volcanoes near the city.

Cotopaxi, Antisana and Cayambe, with their snow-covered peaks, are clearly visible in this image. Cotopaxi is the second highest summit in the country at about 5900 m, and one of Ecuador’s most active volcanoes.

Quito itself, which has developed within the Guayllabamba river basin, is visible at the centre of the image. The city’s southern districts are divided by the Machángara River, a tributary of the Guayllabamba.

The Machángara flows through Quito, from south to north, meandering past one of the city’s famous landmarks, the Panecillo park. This hill provides some of the best views over Quito’s historical centre to its north.

The old town, distinguishable in the image due to the rosier colour of its roofs, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its well-preserved architecture.

Quito is surrounded by rich biodiversity, from cloud forests to ecological reserves, such as the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve, visible in the image as a darker green area just north of the city.

To the east of Quito and the Guayllabamba valley, there are three national parks, covered by patches of white cloud in this image. And to the west, white clouds cover much of the view of the city of Santo Domingo in the western foothills of the Andes mountains.

Several regions around Quito were badly affected by drought-driven wildfire during late 2025, when this image was captured. A large plume of smoke can be seen to the east of Quito and there is a smaller plume to the north, near the Sincholagua volcano.

A burnt area can be seen in the hills east of the city, where nearly 200 hectares (about 300 football pitches) of high-altitude grassland were burned near the remote Andean community of Oyacachi, within the Cayambe Coca National Park.

SUPER EL NIÑO, IS THE TERMINATOR TO BLAME?

Headlines are buzzing with news that a super El Niño is forming in the Pacific Ocean. A solar physicist saw it coming 3 years ago.

In a 2023 paper, Robert Leamon of NASA and the University of Maryland (Baltimore County) made a striking prediction: The next El Niño would arrive in 2026. He based it on the Terminator, a magnetic event on the sun that ends one solar cycle and ignites the next.

Averaging the past five solar cycles into a "standard cycle" and projecting it forward, Leamon found that El Niños follow about five years after a Terminator. The most recent termination event happened in December 2021, putting the next El Niño squarely in 2026. His model says nothing about the strength of this El Niño, but the timing is spot-on.

Leamon and his colleague Scott McIntosh had previously shown that every Terminator since the 1960s coincided with a flip from El Niño to La Niña. Their work correctly predicted the onset of a triple-dip La Niña in 2020 and revealed an unexpected connection between the sun and the ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation).

No one knows how the sun exerts control over the ENSO. Most researchers favor "top-down" models: Solar activity alters the top of Earth's atmosphere, making changes that percolate down to affect the weather we experience near Earth's surface. But the actual mechanism is unknown.

At first (2021), Leamon and McIntosh thought cosmic rays were responsible. Galactic cosmic rays vary with the solar cycle, and they influence the ionization of Earth's atmosphere. But later (2023) Leamon himself weighed in against cosmic rays, noting that the timing didn't work. He currently favors a correlation with geomagnetic activity.

The search for a sun-El Niño connection is as old as El Niño itself. Sir Gilbert Walker, who discovered the "Southern Oscillation" (the SO in ENSO) in the early 1900s, tried and failed to find a link to sunspots. Throughout the 20th century, other researchers likewise struggled to make the connection. The Terminator, however, is a new concept articulated by McIntosh and Leamon in a series of papers starting 10 years ago. It seems to do a good job of predicting solar cycles and may be successful with ENSO as well.

It will take more than 1 or 2 successful predictions to build confidence in this model, but it's a good start. Let the El Niño begin.

Russia and Ukraine have exchanged 205 prisoners of war, the Defense Ministry in Moscow announced on Friday.

The ministry said the Russian servicemen are currently in Belarus and are receiving psychological and medical assistance, adding that they will be taken to Russia for further treatment and rehabilitation.

The officials noted that the release was negotiated with the assistance of the United Arab Emirates, which has helped mediate exchanges on numerous occasions.

A source for RT Russian said the bodies of deceased service members were also exchanged, with Russia handing over a disproportionately larger number (526 to 41).

Ukraine has confirmed the swap, describing it as the first stage of a wider 1,000 for 1,000 exchange, which was announced by US President Donald Trump on May 8 as part of a US-mediated three-day ceasefire around Russia’s Victory Day commemorations.

Officials in Kiev said the freed group includes army, navy, and air force service members, as well as members of the territorial defense forces, the National Guard, and the Border Guard Service.

They added that almost all of those released were held for four years, and most were captured during the fighting in Mariupol in 2022.

Russia and Ukraine regularly exchange POWs and bodies of deceased service members. The last swap took place in late April, with both sides releasing 193.

Authorities say Monica Witt defected to Iran in 2013 and later helped Iranian intelligence target former U.S. colleagues.

WASHINGTON — The FBI is offering a $200,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of former U.S. counterintelligence agent Monica Witt, who was charged in 2019 with espionage related to allegedly providing classified information to Iran.

The FBI Washington Field Office announced the reward Thursday, saying Witt remains at large more than a decade after authorities say she defected to Iran in 2013.

Witt, a former U.S. Air Force intelligence specialist and special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, served in the military from 1997 to 2008 before later working as a government contractor. According to the FBI, her work gave her access to classified information, including the identities of undercover U.S. intelligence personnel.

Federal prosecutors alleged in a 2019 indictment that Witt shared sensitive national defense information with the Iranian government and helped Iranian intelligence services target her former U.S. colleagues.

Authorities said Witt attended an anti-American conference in Iran in 2012 before later returning to the country, where she allegedly received housing and computer equipment from Iranian officials.

The FBI said Witt’s alleged actions benefited Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, which the U.S. government has accused of supporting terrorist organizations and conducting intelligence operations targeting Americans.

“Monica Witt allegedly betrayed her oath to the Constitution more than a decade ago by defecting to Iran and providing the Iranian regime National Defense Information and likely continues to support their nefarious activities,” Daniel Wierzbicki, special agent in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office’s Counterintelligence and Cyber Division, said in a statement. “The FBI has not forgotten and believes that during this critical moment in Iran’s history, there is someone who knows something about her whereabouts,” he added.

The same 2019 indictment also charged four Iranian nationals with conspiracy and aggravated identity theft for allegedly helping Witt gather information about former U.S. intelligence personnel.

A suspected floating armoury anchored near the southern entrance of the Strait of Hormuz has been snatched and is heading towards Iranian waters, according to reports.

The vessel, identified by security firm Vanguard as the 794-gt Hui Chuan (built 1984), was taken by “unauthorised personnnel” while the ship was 38 nautical miles (70 km) north-east of Fujairah.

It was anchored in the middle of the southern entrance to the Strait of Hormuz and is described by maritime databases as a “fishing support” or a “fishery patrol” vessel.

The chief security officer for the vessel said that it had been operating as a floating armoury, said Vanguard.

The Hui Chuan is flying the flag of Honduras and is registered under a Marshall Islands-based entity, SG Navigation Ltd.

SG Navigation is also the owner of the 246-dwt fishing vessel Sunny Ocean (built 1993).

The Sunny Ocean was identified by intelligence company Pole Star Global as a floating armoury owned by Chinese security company Sinoguards and operating in the Red Sea in 2024.

The Sinoguards website says the company provides a “full range of maritime security services for vessels during their transits through Indian Ocean, Gulf of Guinea and any other risky waters”.

The company, which has offices in China, South Korea and Canada, has been contacted for comment.

Floating armouries are used to store weapons offshore used by private security companies that provide armed guards for ships.

Conflicting statements later emerged from Finnish agencies regarding whether drones had actually entered national airspace.

Kimmo Kohvakka, Director General for Rescue Services at the Ministry of the Interior, stated that officials believed at least one drone had crossed into Finland.

However, Finnish Defence Forces communications specialist Henrik Gahmberg reportedly said the military had not visually confirmed any drone activity inside Finnish territory.

Defence officials did not immediately explain the discrepancy between the two statements.

Army’s autonomy office looks beyond drone, robot platforms to ‘packages of capability’

CPE Mission Autonomy will focus first on combat engineering, fires, and logistics, the office’s leader said.

Earlier this year, the Army stood up the Capability Program Executive Office for Mission Autonomy (CPE Mission Autonomy) to interconnect all unmanned operations in the Army from drones to robots.

The new office won’t build or acquire them but will integrate such systems into “packages of capability” that can be tasked by commanders depending on the mission, CPE Mission Autonomy’s leader Brig. Gen. Anthony Gibbs said here at the joint Xponential/MDEX conference.

The initial focus will be to develop such autonomy packages in three areas: combat engineering, where sappers traditionally have been called upon to shape the terrain in the breach prior to ground assault, considered one of the most dangerous jobs in the military and ripe for autonomy; as well as fires and logistics.

These “packages of capability,” as described by Gibbs, will employ “a system of systems approach” that enables a commander to task them “much like he or she would a manned formation.”

CPE Mission Autonomy was cobbled together from existing pieces within the acquisition community: Program Executive Office Ground Combat Systems and Program Executive Office Combat Support & Combat Service Support in Michigan, Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, and Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. It’s headquartered at Fort Belvoir, Va.

Its goal for these mission autonomy packages is to be able to interpret commander’s intent, plan, execute, and adjust as battlefield conditions change.

“When realized,” Gibbs said, “this capability will be able to understand and translate human intent into mission plans and mission execution, dynamically re-task as needed” based on factors such as terrain and the enemy situation.

Because CPE Mission Autonomy’s charge cuts across so many mission areas and user communities in the Army, Gibbs acknowledged that prioritizing across the service is “a big challenge.”

The answer, he said, is that Army Training and Doctrine Command is helping CPE Mission Autonomy look across user communities and determine where the new organization should focus.

As mentioned, autonomous combat engineering for mobility and counter-mobility operations, as well as replacing, displacing, and shaping obstacles, is at the top of the list.

Havana's communist government released a statement noting that the meeting "took place Thursday, May 14, against a backdrop of complex bilateral relations."

AP noted that Cuban officials presented a report to Ratcliffe and his team, claiming to demonstrate that the communist-run island poses no threat to U.S. national security.

Consequently, Havana maintains there are no legitimate grounds for its continued inclusion on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Ofcom announced on Friday that the agreement includes a committment to review and assess so-called “hate content,” reported via a “dedicated UK illegal content reporting tool,” within 24 hours on average, and at least 85 percent of reports within 48 hours. X must also engage with “experts” regarding reporting systems for “illegal hate” and “submit performance data to Ofcom on a quarterly basis” to evaluate its compliance. ,

“These commitments are a step forward, but there’s a lot more to do. We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from civil society and other expert organizations to scrutinize these platforms, and we’ll continue working with them extensively to drive forward changes for people in the UK,” said Oliver Griffiths, Ofcom’s Online Safety Group Director.

X’s move to comply with Ofcom’s demands marks a significant climbdown from Musk’s commitment to making the platform a bastion of free speech after he acquired it in late 2022. Notably, Ofcom said in its announcement that it “worked with a range of organizations to gather evidence about suspected illegal terrorist content and illegal hate speech online, including antisemitic and anti-Muslim material,” with some of the organizations in question being highly controversial. For instance, HOPE Not Hate is a George Soros-funded group noted for spreading fake news about acid attacks on Muslims and smearing immigration skeptics, and Tell MAMA has been accused of inflating its data on alleged anti-Muslim incidents.

Republicans Investigate Foreign Influence Ties To American Universities

A group of congressional Republicans are investigating foreign entities aligned with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) allegedly attempting to influence and infiltrate American universities, the Daily Caller exclusively learned.

Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee Chairman Bill Cassidy and some GOP colleagues are looking into nine universities over alleged foreign ties to the CCP, according to a series of letters obtained exclusively by the Caller. Cassidy is joined by Republican Indiana Sen. Jim Banks and Republican Michigan Reps. Tim Walberg and John Moolenaar.

“As you know, American universities conduct highly sensitive, critical research with direct military applications,” the lawmakers wrote in a joint statement. “Therefore, it is very alarming that countries of concern could be gaining access to research with national security implications at your institution by way of gifts and donations.”

“To ensure the safety of the American people and uphold U.S. national security interests, sensitive research and technology must stay out of the hands of our adversaries.”

A new report from the Department of Education found that 34 institutions have been the recipients of hundreds of millions of dollars from foreign entities with links to American adversaries.

For instance, the University of California, Berkeley received $224.5 million in funding from China, according to the funding portal. Massachusetts Institute of Technology has also received $368.6 million from China, the University of California Irvine has received $27.5 million, and the University of Arizona received $64.5 million, according to the portal.

CCP-aligned organizations are known to infiltrate American universities to steal sensitive military research and intellectual property under the guise of international partnership. In one instance reported exclusively by the Daily Caller News Foundation, CCP members enrolled in American universities established party branches on campuses with the support of their Chinese alma maters.

During a House Education and Workforce Committee hearing in March, Walberg detailed several incidents of potential alleged CCP spying on American campuses.

“Last summer there were multiple disturbing instances of potential foreign espionage on U.S. campuses,” Walberg said. “At the University of Michigan students, employees, and faculty have been charged and sentenced for conspiracy and smuggling-related crimes. At Stanford, students were approached by foreign nationals posing as peers in an effort to get students to travel to China and share research.”

The Republican lawmakers sent letters to nine universities Thursday asking for information regarding the various alleged transactions made with “counterparties of concern,” including organizations with ties to adversaries. These universities include Bryant University, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Arizona, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of California Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Portland State University, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and University of California Irvine.

The Daily Caller reached out to the universities for comment.

President Donald Trump wrapped up a high-stakes two-day summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 15. During the visit, Trump and his team discussed a broad spectrum of issues, from new purchase commitments to the tense situations in Iran and Taiwan, as well as wrongful detentions and human rights concerns.

During the trip, Trump was welcomed on May 14 with a grand ceremony outside the Great Hall of the People on the edge of Tiananmen Square, where Chinese authorities violently suppressed the 1989 pro-democracy movement in what is known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

On the second day of his visit, Trump held meetings at Zhongnanhai, the heavily guarded leadership compound that serves as the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party.

Here are the key takeaways from Trump’s trip to China.

Tight Security Measures

During the trip, the White House took extra precautions to reduce the risk of surveillance, hacking, or data theft by the communist regime in Beijing.

Before leaving China, White House staff collected all badges and pins issued to journalists traveling with the president, according to the White House pool report. Reporters are typically not required to return such items provided by host countries.

White House staff were also observed throwing the collected badges, pins, and burner phones into a bin at the bottom of the stairs before they got on Air Force One, according to Emily Goodin, a New York Post reporter.

Similar measures were implemented prior to entering China. U.S. officials traveling with the president were required to leave personal phones and laptops behind before entering Beijing. They were instead given burner phones for temporary, controlled use.

No Progress on Jimmy Lai

Trump told reporters that releasing political prisoner Jimmy Lai is a “tough one” for Xi. His comments lowered hopes for a breakthrough to free Hong Kong’s pro-democracy media tycoon.

Lai, 78, was sentenced in February to 20 years in prison under Hong Kong’s national security law.

Trump, however, said Xi is seriously considering releasing detained pastor Ezra Jin Mingri.

“I think he’s giving very serious consideration to the pastor,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One.

During a press briefing, Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese regime’s foreign ministry, addressed questions regarding Lai after Trump’s departure on May 15.

“Hong Kong affairs are China’s internal affairs, and the [Chinese] central government firmly supports Hong Kong’s judicial authorities in exercising their duties in accordance with the law,” he said.

Rubio also told NBC News on May 14 that Trump had asked Xi about the release of Lai.

“We would like to see him released,” Rubio said. “It’s really at this point a humanitarian situation because of his age and health.”

On May 13, the U.S. House and Senate passed resolutions urging Trump to confront Xi over five political prisoners: Lai; Chinese pastors Jin Mingri and Gao Quanfu; Gao’s wife, Pang Yu; and retired Uyghur medical doctor Gulshan Abbas.

New Deals on Boeing Jets, Farm Goods

Trump said that China has agreed to buy soybeans, energy products, and Boeing jets from the United States following his meeting with Xi on May 14, the first day of the summit.

In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on May 14, Trump said that China agreed to make major purchases of U.S. agricultural products, particularly soybeans, which are the top U.S. export to the Chinese market.

“Last time we signed like 36 deals. This time it’s much bigger than that,” he said. “They’re gonna do a lot of soybeans for our farmers ... they’re gonna be buying a lot of our farm products, which is great.”

Last year, Beijing reduced imports from the United States amid tariff disputes.

China also agreed to buy 200 Boeing aircraft, in what would represent a major commercial order for the U.S. aerospace company.

On May 15, Trump confirmed the purchase commitment, telling reporters that it could potentially rise to 750 planes. Trump also said the planes would have GE Aerospace engines.

Trump also said that Xi responded positively to his suggestion that Beijing purchase oil and LNG from the United States. China is the largest buyer of Iran’s sanctioned crude oil.

“We’re going to start sending Chinese ships to Texas, and to Louisiana, and to Alaska. And I think that was another thing that was agreed to. That’s a big thing,” the U.S. president told Hannity on May 14.

The Israeli army secretly seized and deleted parts of the 7 October security camera footage, according to a report published by Israel Hayom yesterday, in the latest revelation to deepen suspicion over the official Israeli account of the events of that day.

The Hebrew-language daily reported that on the evening of 9 October 2023, a classified reserve unit operating under the Israeli army’s Ground Forces Command arrived at Kibbutz Be’eri and asked members of the kibbutz’s rapid-response squad to hand over the device storing all the community’s security camera recordings. The unit commander told the exhausted residents that he needed the material “to bring the hostages home” and promised it would not be shared and would be returned in full.

No written commitment was given. By the following morning, the officer had left Be’eri with the recordings and headed to the Kirya, the Israeli army’s headquarters complex in Tel Aviv.

According to the report, the classified unit — composed of reservists drawn from elite formations including Sayeret Matkal, Shaldag, Shayetet 13 and Duvdevan, and founded around a decade ago by former officer Yoaz Hendel — “operates in the gray zones,” a reference to covert, legally ambiguous missions that fall outside the army’s regular chain of command and conventional rules of engagement.

On the morning of 7 October, the commander of the unit, identified only as “N,” activated the group on his own initiative and dispatched the teams to collect visual material from security cameras, dashcams and GoPro cameras belonging to Palestinian fighters.

Material seized from Kibbutz Be’eri’s command room was subsequently passed to the Hostages and Missing Persons Families’ Management, to the Israeli army Spokesperson’s Unit and to other unspecified bodies inside the Israeli defence establishment, Israel Hayom reported.

From there, the unit lost control of the footage. Two days after the recordings were handed over, one of the kibbutz security squad members watching television recognised the now-iconic footage of an elderly Palestinian man hobbling on crutches into a Gaza border community.

“At that moment I was seething with rage,” he told the paper. “Because I recognised that the material came from the perimeter fence camera at Be’eri — the same camera whose footage had been handed to the officer.” The footage had been broadcast without the kibbutz’s knowledge or consent.

Residents of Kibbutz Be’eri who reviewed the returned material this week told Israel Hayom that the recordings had been “tampered with” and returned with deletions. The paper noted that it was unable to independently verify the claim, but pointed out that residents’ suspicions had been reinforced by a separate investigation by Israeli journalist Gali Ginat for Uvda, the country’s leading investigative current affairs television programme, which uncovered footage from the Dor Alon petrol station near neighbouring Kfar Aza — footage that the Israeli army had previously insisted no longer existed.

“October 7 is defined by a profound crisis of trust,” one Be’eri resident told the paper. “The decisions to delete materials were made ‘under fluorescent lights’ — it’s a conscious decision, not one made in the chaos of combat. These are recordings that belong to the community, of people from the community, and you simply take them and delete them without giving them back.”

Asked why he believed portions of the footage had been deleted, the resident replied: “The day will come when an investigative commission is established here. The fewer witnesses there are, the less damage certain people in the military will sustain. I know it sounds conspiratorial, but the more I think about it, the more that is the conclusion I reach.”

The disclosure is the latest in a series of revelations that have chipped away at Israel’s official narrative of 7 October.

Polis denied that the commutation was an attempt to appease President Donald Trump, instead highlighting that Peters was a first-time nonviolent offender who was given an "unusually harsh sentence."

emocratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis commuted the sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters on Friday, shortening her nearly nine-year prison sentence related to the 2020 election.

Peters was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2024 but an appeals court ruled last month that she needs to be resentenced after part of the sentence punished Peters for her protected speech regarding fraud claims in the 2020 election.

Polis denied that the commutation was an attempt to appease President Donald Trump, instead highlighting that Peters was a first-time nonviolent offender who was given an "unusually harsh sentence."

“She committed a crime; she deserves to be a convicted felon,” Polis told the New York Times, claiming her views on the 2020 election shouldn't have impacted her sentence. “I think it’s an important message we send out, that supports free speech in our country."

The 70-year-old Peters was found guilty of three counts of attempting to influence a public servant and one count each of conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, first-degree official misconduct, violation of duty, and failure to comply with the requirements of the secretary of state.

Polis also commuted the sentences of eight other state residents and pardoned 35 people.

Peters will be released on parole effective June 1.

The Danish government has suspended plans for a solid rocket fuel facility intended to supply Fire Point,the Ukrainian defense company widely linked to high-level corruption involving Vladimir Zelensky's inner circle, one of the firm’s senior executives has told the Financial Times.

The Danish government had used national security provisions to bypass potential legal objections surrounding the construction of a facility in Vojens, southern Jutland,where fuel for Fire Point’s missile systems was expected to be manufactured. However, the project announced last September was quietly halted earlier this month, Fire Point chief designer and co-owner Denis Shtilerman told the outlet on Thursday.

Originally operating as a film scouting agency owned by Zelensky insiders,Fire Point has been exposed in leaked transcripts of conversations between Zelensky's inner circle as a vehicle for syphoning off lucrative arms contracts.

Thefirm emerged as a “miracle”player in Ukraine’s defense sector having been internationally touted by Zelenskyon his foreign visits and reportedly securing contracts worth up to $1 billion.

Surveillance recordings published by Ukrainian mediasince April indicated that businessman Timur Mindich –who is wanted in Ukraine over an alleged $100 million corruption scheme in the energy sector– effectively controlled Fire Point during 2025. The recordingsalso suggested he enjoyed preferential treatment from then-Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who now serves as secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.

Shtilerman dismissed the allegations as “rumors,”while lamenting that the suspicions had delayed the company’s plans. He claimed that Fire Point’s products could contribute to the creation of a “pan-European air-defense shield” and claimed that Gulf states, Germany, and other countries had shown strong interest in the firm’s technology.

Mindich scandal widens

The recordings were originally gathered by Western-backed anti-corruption agenciesas part of their investigation into Mindich, a longtime business associate of Zelensky dating back to the Ukrainian leader’s entertainment career. Ukrainian media have nicknamed Mindich “Zelensky’s wallet.”

This week, the same agencies chargedformer Zelensky chief of staff Andrey Yermak with money laundering offenses. According to the indictment, Yermak helped channel illicit funds into a luxury real estate development, which also counts Mindich among its owners,as well as former Unity Minister Aleksey Chernyshov and a fourth partner who media reports claimed is Zelensky himself.

Political uncertainty in Denmark

While Danish media acknowledged that the so-called ‘Mindich tapes’ had intensified scrutiny of Fire Point’s operations inDenmark, authorities have up to now stopped short of confirming that the fuel plant project was in jeopardy.

In late 2025, Deputy Foreign Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, who also serves as defense minister under pro-Ukrainian Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, stated that Copenhagen “does everything it can to follow the money we give” Ukraine.

Denmark is currently facing difficult coalition negotiations after Frederiksen’s Social Democrats recorded their worst election result since 1903 in March voting. Last week, King Frederik asked Poulsen to attempt to form a new government after Frederiksen failed to secure enough parliamentary support for a third term.
