WASHINGTON - Two U.S. officials killed in a vehicle crash as they returned from destroying a clandestine drug lab in northern Mexico over the weekend were working for the CIA, according to a U.S. official and two other people familiar with the matter.

Two Mexican investigators also were killed in the crash, which Mexican authorities said occurred while the convoy was returning from an operation to destroy drug labs of criminal groups. There have been discrepancies in the public accounts of what happened from U.S. and Mexican officials, which experts say underscores heightened American involvement in security operations in Mexico and across the region.

The CIA's involvement was confirmed Tuesday by the three with knowledge of the crash, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence matters. That the U.S. officials worked for the CIA was reported earlier by The Washington Post.

Pursuant to paragraph 2 of Article 12 - Determination of a public health emergency of international concern, including a pandemic emergency of the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR), the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), after having consulted the States Parties where the event is known to be currently occurring, is hereby determining that the Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), but does not meet the criteria of pandemic emergency, as defined in the IHR.

The Director-General of WHO expresses his gratitude to the leadership of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda for their commitment to take necessary and vigorous actions to bring the event under control, as well as for their frankness in assessing the risk posed by this event to other States Parties, hence allowing the global community to take necessary preparedness actions.

In Maryland, they sent out 500,000 Illegal Mail In Ballots, and they got caught! So now, they’re going to send out 500,000 more Mail In Ballots, but nobody knows what’s happening with the first 500,000 they sent. In addition, many of these Ballots went to Democrats, so any Republican running in Maryland doesn’t have a chance! This was done by the Corrupt Governor of the State, Wes Moore. He allowed this to happen in order to make sure that Democrats win. It never made sense to me that Maryland was considered an automatic Democrat State, but now I see why. LOS ANGELES – A Marina del Rey woman who worked as a longtime signature collector for ballot initiatives has been charged with paying individuals – including homeless people living in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles – to register to vote, the Justice Department announced today.

Brenda Lee Brown Armstrong, 64, a.k.a. “Anika,” is charged with one felony count of paying another person to register to vote, a federal charge that carries a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison.

Armstrong has agreed to plead guilty to the charge and is scheduled to make her initial appearance this morning in United States District Court in Santa Ana. She is expected to plead guilty in the coming weeks.

“False registrations undermine Americans’ faith in elections – even more so when payoffs are involved,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division. “This Justice Department is committed to ensuring that all U.S. elections are fair and free from illegal meddling – so that all Americans can accept the results with confidence.”

According to her plea agreement, for approximately 20 years, Armstrong periodically worked as a “petition circulator.” In that role, she was paid by individuals and entities – known as “coordinators” – to collect voter signatures on official petitions that qualify initiatives, referendums, and recalls for California state ballots. Carlsbad Man Arrested on Federal Indictment Charging Him with Assaulting Jewish Man Near Pico-Robertson Synagogue

LOS ANGELES – A San Diego County man was arrested today on a federal grand jury indictment charging him with assaulting a Jewish man near a synagogue in the Pico-Robertson area of Los Angeles, which was hosting an event to promote the purchase of real estate in Israel – an event protested by several pro-Palestinian groups.

Zaid Gitesatani, 28, of Carlsbad, is charged with one count of hate crime. He is expected to make his initial appearance this afternoon in United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles.

“The defendant’s conduct, if proven, is a serious violation of the law – every American deserves to live without fear of violence based on who he is or how he worships,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division. “The Justice Department is committed to vigorously prosecuting such crimes of hate and violence.”

According to the indictment that a federal grand jury returned on May 5, a real estate agency known as “My Home in Israel” advertised an event scheduled for June 23, 2024, at the Adas Torah Synagogue in L.A.’s Pico-Robertson neighborhood. The event was to promote land for sale in Israel.

Several pro-Palestinian groups then planned for and advertised a protest to take place at this event. One of those groups advertised a protest to “stand against settler expansion.” Gitesatani traveled to Los Angeles to attend this protest.

On the afternoon of the real estate event and protest, a Jewish man identified in the indictment as “Victim A” was walking his dog near the Adas Torah Synagogue when Gitesatani approached him from behind and punched him in the jaw, resulting in pain, redness, and swelling. After assaulting the victim, Gitesatani walked away and retreated into the crowd.

On the same day he assaulted Victim A, Gitesatani posted to his personal Instagram account a screenshot of his assault, a message that read, “Whooped the Zios today and we took their flag,” and two images of himself displaying his bruised knuckles following the assault. ...

US Airports Get Nearly $1 Billion for Family-Friendly Upgrades: Duffy

The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded 133 grants to airports in 45 states for play areas, nursing rooms, and family security lanes.

The Federal Aviation Administration has invested $970 million to make airports more family-friendly, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced Monday.

Airports in 45 states will get upgrades that will include new children’s play spaces, mother’s rooms (also known as nursing rooms), family security lanes, and sensory rooms for children with special needs.

The new program is called the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act’s Airport Terminal Program.

“This administration is focused on making travel happier and more convenient for American families. The Golden Age of Travel includes a Family First agenda,” Duffy said in a statement. “We’re making airports inviting spaces for parents and children to relax and recharge prior to boarding.”

Airports will receive between $2 million and $10 million each.

Tupelo Regional Airport in Mississippi, which serves around 30,000 passengers annually, will receive $2 million for a family-friendly security lane, while the mid-sized Donald J. Trump International Airport in Palm Beach, which serves over 8.6 million passengers annually, will get $10 million for new restrooms, mother’s rooms, and a sensory room.

The large hub of Boston’s Logan International Airport, which serves over 43.2 million passengers a year, will receive $2.8 million to renovate four Kidsports play areas, while the massive Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, with over 85.6 million passengers a year, will get $8 million to update five restrooms with family-friendly features.

“The FAA is moving quickly to get these investments out the door and into airports nationwide,” FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said in a statement. “These projects will help create a more welcoming and accessible travel experience for families while demonstrating our commitment to improving America’s airports at record speed.”

Duffy had announced the plan, dubbed the “Make Travel Family Friendly Again” campaign, five months earlier.

In December 2025, the Transportation Department had asked airports to submit projects focused on family travel needs, including children’s play areas, exercise spaces, mother’s rooms, nursing pods, family security lanes, and sensory rooms.

The department set aside roughly $1 billion in grants to improve airport experiences for families and provide healthier food options. Duffy made the announcement in December alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other health influencers.

“It’s not been a healthy experience for them,” Kennedy said, referring to the 3 million Americans who pass through the nation’s airports each year, adding that airports are “where healthy diets go to die.”

“The food that’s available in the airport, a lot of it tastes very good, but it’s not very good for you,” Kennedy said. “It’s deep-fried food. It’s sugar bombs. It’s ultra-processed foods. And all of them are going to leave you sicker than before you ate them.”

Kennedy also said airports lack nursing spaces, nursing pods, and nursing rooms.

The HHS is encouraging mothers to breastfeed babies as long as possible, according to Kennedy.

“There is no better food for your brain, for your gut microbiome, for your physical growth, for your emotional growth, than what’s in God-given breast milk,” Kennedy added.

The state Board of Elections said that some voters had received the wrong party’s ballot for the June primary because of a vendor error.

President Donald Trump said on May 18 that he will ask the Department of Justice (DOJ) to launch a probe into a mail-in ballot error in Maryland.

Trump’s statement came after the Maryland Board of Elections announced on May 15 that some voters had received the wrong party’s ballot for the primary, which will be held on June 23. The agency attributed the issue to a vendor error and said that replacement ballots were being issued.

Maryland State Administrator of Elections Jared DeMarinis said over 500,000 voters requested mail-in ballots. But the error affected only voters who mailed their ballots before May 14, according to the board.

In a Truth Social post, Trump accused Gov. Wes Moore of allowing the error for political reasons.

The Epoch Times has reached out to Moore’s office for comment but did not receive a response by publication time.

Speaking to reporters at a May 18 health care affordability event, Trump said he was very concerned about mail-in ballots and raised questions about the ballots incorrectly mailed to Maryland voters.

“When they were caught, they said, ‘Oh, we'll pull them back,’ and they issued 500,000 new ballots, and, as you know, they never got the original ballots back, so there are a million ballots out there. Many of them went to Democrats, and it’s a very serious thing,” he said.

The state board of elections stated on its website that election officials have put in place safeguards to ensure that only one ballot can be accepted per voter, preventing any risk of duplicate voting after the error.

“Every return envelope/oath has a unique identifier to ensure that a voter can only vote one ballot. [The Board of Elections] has implemented additional safeguards to ensure only the correct ballot is counted for each voter,” it said.

The team will gauge how to expropriate dozens of properties along Chain Gate Street, which in Hebrew is called HaShalshelet Street. The alley serves as the Jewish Quarter’s northern perimeter and ultimately leads to the Temple Mount/Al-Aqsa compound.

The government decision comes at the initiative of the Jerusalem Affairs and Heritage Ministry, currently headed by Likud lawmaker Yariv Levin. It is one of several resolutions pegged to Jerusalem Day, celebrated last week from Thursday to Friday evening.

The inter-ministerial team, which will be led by the director general of the Jerusalem Affairs and Heritage Ministry, has a year to submit an actionable plan to the government, Channel 12 reports.

The decision is meant to further the “development and strengthening of the Israeli capital” and “exercise control over the [Jewish] Quarter in its entirety,” Levin’s ministry says in a statement.

According to Channel 12, the step could lead to the confiscation of roughly 50 buildings and the eventual eviction of the Muslim families residing there to make way for Jewish tenants.

The report notes that the prospect of seizing properties on Chain Gate Street — a sensitive area due to its proximity to the Temple Mount — encountered resistance from officials in the Finance Ministry, who argued the move could spark international opposition.

Aviv Tatarsky, a researcher for Ir Amim, an NGO that advocates for Palestinian Jerusalemites, says that the prospective confiscation of property on the street would be “an aggressive step.”

“On one hand, nothing is going to happen at the present moment, but on the other hand, it attests that this is what the government wants,” he tells The Times of Israel. “It basically means that wherever the government wants, it can take and expropriate Palestinian property.”

A source in the Jerusalem Ministry tells Channel 12 that the territory belongs to the State of Israel “on paper” after Israel issued expropriation notices upon capturing the Old City in the Six-Day War. The notices were reportedly based on the British Mandate-era Land Ordinance of 1943, which regulates the expropriation of land for public purposes.

The street, in addition to leading to the Temple Mount, is home to several well-known Palestinian institutions including the Khalidi Library, founded as a public library under Ottoman rule in 1900, as well as several Muslim mausoleums. During the late Ottoman period, a mix of Jewish and Muslim families lived on the street.

California Treasurer Has Long History Hobnobbing With Chinese Gov’t And CCP Intel Officials

California’s two-term treasurer, Fiona Ma, has met with high-level Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials and intelligence personnel dozens of times in the last several decades, a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation discovered.

During these many meetings in the U.S. and China, the Democratic frontrunner in California’s 2026 lieutenant governor race has introduced American lawmakers to Chinese intelligence officials and also repeatedly presented awards to CCP members and influence operatives, according to DCNF translations of Chinese government and state media reports.

“We really should be more integrated,” Ma said during a 2023 interview with state-run media outlet CGTN. “The more that we can get along, work together, I think would create more peace in the world as well as better economic opportunities for both countries.”

“CCP elite capture is alive and well,” Peter Schweizer, New York Times bestselling author of “Red Handed,” told the DCNF. “Any politician who continues to engage in these types of behavior is not a target, but is complicit in CCP activities. Ignorance is no longer an excuse.”

Ma’s ties to China recently came under scrutiny following an April Politico report revealing that in September 2023 she offered to help secure U.S. internships and employment opportunities for students attending the Pegasus California School, which was founded in the coastal city of Qingdao by Ma’s campaign finance committee chair. Pegasus’ students, who are Chinese nationals, have allegedly received unlawful California high school diplomas through a partnership with the Val Verde Unified School District, according to a 2026 Riverside County Office of Education audit of the district, which did not accuse Ma of wrongdoing.

Ma has met with officials from the CCP and a Chinese government influence and intelligence agency called the United Front Work Department (UFWD) at least 30 times, according to DCNF translations of Chinese government and state media reports.

The UFWD’s operations are a “blend of engagement, influence activities, and intelligence operations” that Beijing uses to steer foreign policy and “gain access to advanced foreign technology,” according to the House Select Committee on the CCP.

Born in New York to Chinese immigrants from a prominent military family, Ma began taking U.S. lawmakers to China in 1999 while working as an aide for the late California Democratic Sen. John Burton, state-run China Daily reported.

Ma led that delegation alongside an individual who also holds a position with the Chinese government as an advisor to Sichuan province, according to an interview Ma conducted with Chinese state media and a DCNF translation of a Chinese government announcement.

That advisor has also participated in several other China trips Ma has organized for U.S. lawmakers since she became a public servant in 2002, including a December 2014 trip during which Ma introduced over 20 California State Legislature members to Chinese government and UFWD officials while visiting Sichuan on a trade delegation, according to DCNF translations of Chinese government announcements.

Since Ma’s January 2019 inauguration as California treasurer, she has met with Chinese government and CCP intelligence officials over 20 times, including three meetings in China in 2023, according to DCNF translations of Chinese government and state media reports.

California’s chief financial officer presented one award to the chairman of the Chinese People’s Association For Friendship With Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) during his February 2023 visit to the U.S., a photo accompanying an announcement from that UFWD affiliate shows. CPAFFC has “sought to directly and malignly influence state and local leaders to promote [China’s] global agenda,” the U.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center has warned.

Although there is no evidence that CPAFFC has ever sought to influence Ma, other Chinese government officials have reportedly pressured the politician to adopt their preferred policy positions in the past.

In one instance, while serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in August 2005, the Chinese government allegedly successfully pressured Ma to withdraw her support for an art exhibit organized by practitioners of Falun Gong, which is a spiritual movement that the CCP banned in 1999, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Several years later, while serving as a California State Assemblywoman, Ma allegedly killed a resolution honoring Tibet in March 2009 following intense Chinese government lobbying, The Sacramento Bee reported.

A 573-year-old temple in Japan was engulfed in flames on Saturday evening (16 May), with firefighters battling the blaze for almost nine hours before bringing it under control.

Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson will tie the knot over Memorial Day weekend, a source tells Page Six.

We hear the couple will say “I do” in front of a small group of family and friends at an intimate ceremony on a private island in the Bahamas

Page Six previously reported that Trump Jr. and Anderson were in a hurry to get hitched, with a source telling us in mid-April the pair were set to wed within the next few months.

However, we also heard that, by the end of April, the pair — who were initially eyeing a wedding at the White House — were mulling over slowing things down due to the war in Iran.

“They’re very aware that a lavish wedding at the White House while people are dying wouldn’t be well-received,” an insider previously told Page Six.

Now we’re told that instead of putting off the nuptials as the war drags on, they are simply opting for a much smaller wedding.

Anderson held an Enchanted Garden-themed bridal shower at Mar-a-Lago in April attended by Ivanka Trump, Lara Trump, Tiffany Trump and Marla Maples.

Trump Jr.’s daughter with ex-wife Vanessa Trump, Kai Trump, also stopped by, according to a spy.

The fête was hosted by Palm Beach socialites Yaz Hernandez, Amy Phelan and Audrey Gruss. Other guests included Daphne Oz, Dina Powell McCormick, Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger, Andrea Wynn and Bret Baier’s wife, Amy Baier.

Trump Jr. even gave a toast at the shower.

NGC 2170: The Angel Nebula

Is this a painting or a photograph? In this celestial abstract art composed with a cosmic brush, dusty nebula NGC 2170, also known as the Angel Nebula, shines just above the image center. Reflecting the light of nearby hot stars, NGC 2170 is joined by other bluish reflection nebulae, a red emission region, many dark absorption nebulae, and a backdrop of colorful stars. Like the common household items that abstract painters often choose for their subjects, the clouds of gas, dust, and hot stars featured here are also commonly found in a setting like this one - a massive, star-forming molecular cloud in the constellation of the Unicorn (Monoceros). The giant molecular cloud Mon R2, is impressively close, estimated to be only 2,400 light-years or so away. At that distance, this canvas would be over 60 light-years across.

Senate GOP confirms 49 Trump nominees in one swoop after changing filibuster rules

From Fox News: Senate Republicans moved one step closer to clearing out the backlog of President Donald Trump’s nominees.

The GOP confirmed 49 of Trump’s picks on Monday, a move that will have installed 60% of his civilian nominees. It’s also the fourth time Republicans have confirmed a slate of nominees in a batch since changing the Senate’s rules last year.

Included in the latest batch are 20 different positions, including a dozen U.S. attorneys, several U.S. marshals, ambassadors and members of a variety of agencies, including the departments of War, Transportation, Energy, and others.

Also included in the group is Trump’s pick to lead the Bureau of Land Management and a former member of Congress, Stevan Pearce.

46-43: Senate along party lines confirmed 49 of President Trump’s nominees en bloc, including 3 former GOP Congressmen to new posts in the 2nd Trump Administration:

Former Rep./IRS Commissioner Billy Long (R-MO) to be U.S. Amb. to Iceland

Former Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM) to head BLM

Former Rep./WH Deputy Budget Director Dan Bishop (R-NC) to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of NC.

The Senate also confirmed:
