Navy SEALs In Mini-Submarines Teamed With Underwater Drones In The Works

he U.S. Navy sees a future in which uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUV) work together with submersibles loaded with SEALs.

The service has already been conducting tests to explore how crewed-uncrewed teaming under the waves might work.

UUVs could help extend the operational reach of operators riding in SDVs, as well as help reduce their vulnerability, but there are communications and other challenges still to overcome.

Navy Capt. Mike Linn shared details about the Navy’s plans for teaming UUVs and various types of swimmer delivery vehicles (SDV) with our Howard Altman on the sidelines of the annual SOF Week conference yesterday.

Linn currently works within the Naval Special Warfare program office (PMS 340), a division of the Naval Sea Systems Command’s (NAVSEA) Program Executive Office for Unmanned and Small Combatants (PEO USC).

“That is the goal,” Linn said when asked about the Navy’s view of teaming UUVs with SDVs, the latter of which the service also refers to as SEAL Delivery Vehicles.

As it stands now, the main workhorse of the Navy’s SDV force is the Mk 11, which is just under 22 and a half feet long. It is operated by a crew of two and can carry six passengers.

Also referred to as the Shallow Water Combat Submersible (SWCS), the Mk 11 is what is known as a “wet” submersible design, where the occupants are exposed to water the entire time during their voyage.

The Mk 11, like its predecessors, can be launched and recovered from submerged submarines with specialized Dry Deck Shelters (DDS) attached to their hulls.

The Navy has also acquired several new Dry Combat Submersibles (DCS) in recent years, which feature a pressurized cabin with space for a crew of two and eight passengers.

This means the larger DCSs can operate at greater depths than the SWCSs. They also deliver their occupants to the destination dry and relatively warm, helping to reduce operator fatigue and certain potential health risks.

The DCS does have the limitation of being too big to fit inside existing DDSs. At least publicly, this is understood to translate to the need for support from a mothership on the surface.

There are multiple UUV designs in the Navy’s inventory today, as well. These are largely torpedo-shaped designs intended to be deployed from and retrieved by vessels riding on the surface or submarines.

In recent years, the service has been working to expand its ability to launch and recover UUVs from submerged submarines without the need to send out divers to help.

Historically, underwater retrieval of UUVs, in particular, has been a largely manual affair, often conducted via DDS.

In terms of the potential benefits of UUV-SDV teams, “underwater systems like the SDV and UUVs afford reach underwater,” Capt. Linn explained.

“So, if you can get somewhere in an SDV and then launch a UUV to go do something, then that would make you more capable.”

“You could extrapolate, just as you would have an unmanned wingman in an aircraft, or a maritime surface co-pilot, the same can be said for underseas,” he continued.

“So, if you have an unmanned system with you underwater, then I suppose you can use your imagination.”

After facing intense pressure, Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin has released the party's autopsy report on the 2024 election in which President Trump won his second term after a four year gap. Ahead of the election, former Presisdent Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris. Harris lost easily to President Donald Trump. Although the report is full of errors and incomplete, Martin released it, he said, to increase "transparency" to gain "trust" with voters.

Martin has been facing public pressure for months to release the report, which details many of the problems that plauged the Democrat party during the 2024 election. The report, full of annotations, comes with a disclaimer at the top from the DNC's lawyers. They said it who "reflects the views of the author, not the DNC. The DNC was not provided with the underlying sourcing, interviews, or supporting data for many of the assertions contained herein and therefore cannot independently verify the claims presented."

Martin had been facing calls to release the report for months and had promised to do so, but then reversed course in December 2025, per NBC News. That led to a lot of strife in the party, and eventually he apologized and released it as it was.

“When I was elected DNC chair, I commissioned an after action review of the 2024 election that I wanted to be honest and transparent, and with actionable and specific takeaways for the future of the Democratic Party,” Martin said. “When I received the report late last year, it wasn’t ready for primetime — not even close — and because no source material was provided, it would have meant starting over.”

SULLIVAN, Maine – A Maine parents’ advocacy organization is calling for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner (D) to be banned from school properties across the state following resurfaced online posts and a growing list of controversies that have engulfed his campaign.

In a media release issued Wednesday, Parents’ Rights in Education Maine and RSU 9 District Leader Emma Enman said recent reports involving Platner’s alleged past conduct have raised serious concerns among parents and community members regarding his presence at school-related political events and activities.

The controversy stems from resurfaced online posts allegedly tied to Platner that included graphic descriptions of sexual acts in public portable toilets.The reports sparked immediate backlash across Maine political circles, with critics questioning whether a candidate associated with such conduct should be holding campaign events on school grounds or appearing at educational facilities.

“Recent reports ofU.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner masturbating in porta pottieshave people concerned about him being on school property,” the release states.

“As a mother, I am deeply disturbed and disgusted by the recent graphic revelations regarding Graham Platner’s sexually deviant behaviors in public restrooms,” Enman said in the statement. “Graham Platner’s past predatory behaviors must end his political rallies at schools here across Maine.”

The organization also referenced Maine statute 17-A §854, which addresses indecent conduct involving sexual acts in places open to the public, including portable toilets.

Platner’s campaign has been plagued by his derogatory comments about women.

For Maine Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner, the seedier he gets the better he bests his GOP opponent.

Of late he talked about masturbating in public bathrooms andnow it’s complaining about taxing prostitution.

Nonetheless the latest Pan Atlantic poll shows him beating five-term U.S. Sen. Susan Collins by seven points.

The most recent report came Wednesday quotingPlatner once lamenting the closing of a loophole that allowed military contractors to save money on taxes by spending their time off “banging hookers in Thailand” instead of getting “b*tched” at by their wives back in the United States.

“Spend your leave banging hookers in Thailand instead of getting b*tched at by the wife back home, and you could sell it as avoiding federal income tax,” Platner wrote on Reddit in June 2019, according to the Daily Wire.

“Once the Afghans started using our paychecks as a personal piggy bank, that whole loophole disappeared,” Platner said, as quoted by the Daily Wire’s Leif Le Mahieu.

Platner made the comments under the name “P-Hustle,” a handle he admitted to using after an archive of his Reddit posts was discovered.

“Hell, with those DoD static contracts, those poor bastards literally are just making 65 a year,” Platner posted under the user name “P-Hustle” on a thread.

“Sadly, the Afghan tax f***ed everybody on the 330 game.”

The reference is IRS regulations allowing a significant portion of income to be exempt if a person spends at least 330 days in a foreign country during a 12-month period.

The loophole allows American military contractors to avoid paying higher federal income taxes if they spend significant time overseas.

The Daily Mail is citing a piece from the Maine Small Business Development Centers reporting thatPlatner received $20,000 from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation five years ago to fund his oyster business.

Spyros Niarchos, on the foundation board, “has beendescribed by Greek newspaper Documento as a member of the ‘inner circle of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein,”the Daily Mail reports.

Niarchos appeared in several of the files relating to Epstein that have been released by the U.S. Department of Justice in recent months.

Platner better be careful of what he wishes for.

DOJ Charges 15 in $90 Million Minnesota Fraud Schemes

‘This is the beginning of our work in Minnesota,’ Colin McDonald, assistant attorney general for the National Fraud Enforcement Division, says.

Criminal charges have been filed against 15 accused fraudsters in Minnesota, involving more than $90 million in taxpayers’ dollars, federal officials announced on May 21 at a news conference in Minneapolis.

“This is the beginning of our work in Minnesota,” Colin McDonald, assistant attorney general for the National Fraud Enforcement Division, said.

McDonald took the helm of that newly formed Department of Justice (DOJ) division less than two months ago.

He alleged that the suspects “systematically pilfered” seven different government-benefit programs, treating them as “their personal piggy bank.”

Officials revealed the new charges shortly after a federal judge sentenced a convicted fraudster to nearly 42 years in prison. Prosecutors said Aimee Bock, now 45, was the “mastermind” behind $242 million illegally taken from the Federal Child Nutrition Program. The organization that Bock headed, Feeding Our Future, operated the nation’s largest COVID-19 pandemic fraud scheme, officials said.

Bock and dozens of other suspects were charged beginning in 2022. That was three years before Minnesota’s estimated $9 billion in government-program fraud rose to national prominence and inspired President Donald Trump to launch a nationwide fraud-enforcement effort.

The latest accusations involve programs such as autism services and Minnesota’s Housing Stabilization Services, which the state shut down because of fraud.

In 2020, the housing-assistance program was budgeted for $2.5 million annually. But by 2024, it “ended up costing almost 50 times that much, over $104 million,” because of fraud, McDonald said.

“The same trends exist for other Minnesota-run taxpayer-funded programs,” he said, noting that the autism program cost taxpayers $600,000 just six years ago but “skyrocketed to over $400 million.” McDonald attributed that exponential increase to fraud, not need for services.

Calling the new prosecutions “unprecedented,” McDonald said they include “the highest loss amount ever charged in a Medicaid case in Minnesota, and the largest autism-fraud scheme ever charged by the Department of Justice.”

The defendants’ names and further details about the charges were not immediately available.

“The common theme throughout these cases is fraudsters exploiting vulnerable people” and programs, McDonald said.

The defendants used disabled people “like lottery tickets ... to generate millions of dollars,” McDonald said, adding that the ill-gotten gains were used to buy real estate, luxury vehicles, and expensive jewelry.

He said the suspects were determined to reap money no matter what the cost to others.

In one case, a client died after failing to receive care for which an alleged fraudster billed Medicaid, McDonald said.

“We will not ... tolerate this greed and deceit,” he said.

In recent months, President Donald Trump’s administration has focused on fraud, producing “450 fraud-enforcement actions” nationwide, he said.

The efforts are expanding, McDonald said, announcing that 15 additional prosecutors have been hired.

“If you see something that seems too good to be true, tell us,” he said, referring to anyone in Minnesota or the rest of the United States.

McDonald noted that parents were being paid kickbacks to enroll their children in some of the programs.

He urged citizens: “Speak out. Help us win the fight against fraud.”

And he warned fraudsters: “Eat, drink, and be merry today. Because your days of frolicking and freedom are numbered.”

McDonald said he would “claw back every dollar you have stolen from the American people.”

Also speaking at the news conference, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the indirect costs of fraud are high, too.

“Fraud drives up health care costs for all Americans. It weakens public trust. It drains taxpayer resources, and threatens the long-term stability of both Medicaid and Medicare,” Kennedy said. “If we fail to confront the fraud aggressively, these programs will not survive for future generations in the form Americans rely upon them today.”

He commended Trump and Vice President JD Vance for “carrying out the most aggressive anti-fraud effort in American history.”

Kennedy said fraud cases often take years, or even decades, to assemble, but in these cases, prosecutors and investigators worked with “a precision and speed that is unprecedented in the history of law enforcement.”

The New Yorker, for example, asked whether "a Maine oyster farmer" can defeat incumbent Republican senator Susan Collins. The Washington Post labeled Platner one of its "rugged guys of the 2026 midterms" alongside two other bearded, tattooed Democratic candidates. Bon Appétit, the foodie magazine, hailed Platner as a "working-class oysterman" poised to become Maine's version of Zohran Mamdani, the socialist candidate for New York City mayor.

There are other markers of a privileged upbringing. Platner's father, Bronson Platner, is a prominent Maine attorney, and his grandfather, Warren Platner, was the architect who built the headquarters for the Ford Foundation. A New York Times obituary described his works as "enduring icon[s] of 1960s Modernism." His archives are stored at Yale University.

Platner has faced criticism for a series of inflammatory Reddit posts and, more recently, for a Nazi symbol tattooed to his chest. In the Reddit posts, Platner described himself as a "communist" and an "antifa supersoldier." He promoted violent political action, stating in 2018 that "an armed working class is a requirement for economic justice." Platner also claimed an affiliation with the Maine chapter of the Socialist Rifle Association and said he provided firearm instruction to the group, which has referred to police officers as "fascist pigs."

Platner has said he is embarrassed by the posts, which he wrote when he was in his 30s. He referred to them as the musings of a Reddit "shit poster" fueled by anger and alcohol. "I also used to like to get drunk and post on Reddit, because that was fun when I was angry and alone," Platner told Pod Save America.

Inebriation is also Platner's explanation for the Nazi tattoo he got in Croatia while serving in the Marines in 2007. The tattoo is a Totenkopf, a skull and crossbones tattoo affiliated with Nazi Germany and white supremacist groups. "We got very inebriated, and we did what Marines on liberty do, and we decided to go get a tattoo," Platner said.

He told Pod Save America's Tommy Vietor, a former van driver for the 2008 Obama presidential campaign, that he was unaware of the tattoo's symbolism.

Two Platner associates have contradicted his claim of ignorance. Genevieve McDonald, who resigned as Platner's political director over the Reddit posts, said Platner is a "history buff" who likely knew the meaning behind the tattoo. And a person who knew Platner when he lived in Washington, D.C., told Jewish Insider that Platner fondly referred to the tattoo as "my Totenkopf."

Platner has now covered up the tattoo, revealing the new design—a wolf with Celtic imagery—during a television interview in Maine.

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner says he isn't worried about more unflattering stories coming out about him because he's "lived a fairly simple life" and has "never been close to money and power." It's an interesting characterization, given that Platner attended an elite Connecticut boarding school that costs upwards of $75,000 and is the grandson of a world-famous architect known for designing $20,000 chairs.

Platner's remarks came during a Tuesday interview with MSNBC host and former Biden press secretary Jen Psaki, who gave Platner the opportunity to put into "context" any controversial "things" from his "past" that may "come to light." Platner declined, arguing that—apart from his unearthed Reddit comments and Nazi tattoo—there is little more to learn about his modest existence.

"I'm pretty sure the reason they led with internet comments and the tattoo I got in the Marine Corps is because this is what they have," Platner said. "I've not lived a boring life, but I have lived a fairly simple life. I've never been close to money and power, I've never had the ability to screw people over."

Clad in a plaid shirt, sleeves rolled up, Platner has cultivated a working-class image on the campaign trail, but he appears to come from a wealthy family. His father, Bronson Platner, served as an assistant district attorney in Maine, ran unsuccessfully for state senate, and operated his own law practice for more than 30 years. He also chaired the board of a local nonprofit that maintained ties to former Senate majority leader George Mitchell, former secretary of defense William Cohen, and former Maine governor Joseph Brennan, according to a 1984 Ellsworth American article.

Platner's grandfather, Warren Platner,was a world-famous architect known for creating "a furniture collection that has proved to be an enduring icon of 1960's Modernism" and for designing "several prominent interiors in New York, including offices for the Ford Foundation building and the original Windows on the World restaurant," as the New York Times put it in when he died in 2006. Pieces from that collection are still available for purchase: The "Platner Easy Chair" sells for $19,395, while the 60-inch "Platner dining table," a "bestseller," costs $7,283. The "Platner Stool" starts at a more modest $2,395.

A Cornell University graduate, Warren Platner's "opulent modernism" designs earned him many plaudits: He received the Rome Prize in architecture in 1955 and was inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 1985. He remained active in his architectural firm around the time of his death, "working on projects including a new shopping center in Greece," according to the Times.

Platner himself attended the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn., in 1999, the Washington Free Beacon reported. It's considered America's number one boarding school and boasts extracurricular offerings like a 287-acre farm, a 220,000-square-foot "state-of-the-art" athletic facility featuring squash courts and two ice skating rinks, and study abroad opportunities in France, Italy, Spain, and the Bahamas. Its alumni include a Supreme Court justice and a CIA director. Tuition and fees for boarding students sit at $77,240 a year.

Mainstream media outlets like the Washington Post and New Yorker have characterized Platner as a rugged, working-class oyster farmer without acknowledging his boarding school background and familial ties. In a profile of Platner, GQ did acknowledge Platner's "prominent local attorney" grandfather and "leading modernist architect" grandfather—but presented them as a potential selling point for his campaign rather than a contradiction.

"What makes Maine particularly interesting is that its lawmakers have not … historically presented as hardscrabble or even blue-collar," the profile reads. "Erudite, bookish senators … were all popular in the state, and the percentage of voters with bachelor's degrees is not especially low."

"Platner, if he so chooses, has the ability to appeal to that tradition. He does not hail from a line of oyster farmers."

Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner (D.) suggested that legendary "American Sniper" Chris Kyle shot innocent civilians in Iraq in order to inflate his kill numbers. Platner also bristled at the idea of the former Navy SEAL and his platoon being dubbed "heroes."

Platner, running for Senate against Sen. Susan Collins (R.), lashed out at Kyle and members of the SEAL's "Task Unit Bruiser" in a May 2024 podcast interview on Green Beret Chronicle Show in which Platner, a former Marine, discussed his deployment in 2006 to Ramadi, a hotbed of insurgent activity during the Iraq war. In the interview, Platner—who did not belong to an elite Special Forces unit like the SEALs—took issue with public portrayals of Task Unit Bruiser and Kyle as heroes of the Iraq war.

"[Kyle's] stories about how many people he was shooting certainly tracked with the behavior I witnessed [in Ramadi]," said Platner. "It's relatively easy to get high numbers like that if you're a little less discriminating in your fire than, say, a more professional unit would be."

Platner claimed members of Task Unit Bruiser, led by then Navy SEAL commander Jocko Willink, shot unarmed civilians from their position at the Government Center in Ramadi, where American forces were stationed throughout 2006.

"I almost felt like there was like a weird practical joke being played on me by the war that, like all these years later, I'm like, having to like... People are telling me like 'Oh, look how great this guy is, these guys are amazing heroes,' this whole incredible thing," said Platner. "The paragon of leadership, and I'm just sitting there like, 'Am I living in like an alternate reality?' Because this is the exact opposite of my experience."

Kyle is widely regarded as a war hero and is believed to be the most gifted sniper in the Iraq war, earning the nickname "the Devil of Ramadi" for the dozens of Iraqi insurgents he killed during the Battle of Ramadi. Kyle, who published his autobiography American Sniper in 2012, was murdered at his Texas ranch in 2013 by a former Marine whom Kyle had taken under his wing while the man suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Kyle's autobiography was the basis for Clint Eastwood's celebrated 2014 film of the same name, starring Bradley Cooper, which was nominated for six Academy Awards.

Platner suggested in other remarks on the podcast that he did not know who Kyle was until after he read Kyle's autobiography, raising questions about how Platner knew Kyle was "less discriminating" about who he shot in Iraq.

"I didn't know who these guys were," Platner said of Task Unit Bruiser.

Platner is the loudest voice to make the allegations against the Bruisers, though a Substacker named Seth Hettena built on Platner's allegations (made originally on Reddit, in now-deleted comments, made around 2021) by interviewing more ex-Marines in 2024. There was never an official investigation into the Marines' allegations, and Willink has strenuously denied any improper conduct and threatened to sue Hettena.

Platner has given inconsistent statements about his own military service. In a recent New York Times interview, Platner blamed Collins, the Republican incumbent, for voting to send him to Iraq.

"Susan Collins voted to send me to Iraq," he said.

But the timeline doesn't match up with Platner's military service. The Senate voted to authorize the Iraq war in 2002 on a 77-23 vote, with Collins joining the bipartisan majority. Platner joined the Marines in 2004 and wrote on Reddit in 2020 that he did so because he "wanted to have an adventure and kill some people."

"Joined up in '04, did Fallujah and Ramadi, and managed both. Hell of an excellent experience," Platner wrote.

Platner has heaped praise on Hamas while criticizing American warfighters in his Reddit posts. In 2014, he remarked on a video of a Hamas raid that "this was a damn fine looking and successful raid against a superior opponent."

"I dig it," wrote Platner, Jewish Insider reported.

In 2019, Platner criticized an American soldier seen in a video being shot by Taliban fighters.

"This video never gets old. Dumb motherf—er didn't deserve to live," Platner wrote. "At least his stupidity and fat ass wheezing are available for all future infantrymen to witness and hold in contempt. Poor marksmanship on the Taliban's part is the only reason this mouthbreather made it home, he managed to make every possible shit decision possible when it comes to small unit combat."

In a 2020 Reddit post, Platner remarked that the G.I. Bill, which pays for military veterans to attend college, should be granted to the general public as well. Platner's argument was that "most" members of the American military "have barely made a sacrifice," and so were not more deserving of government-funded college than other Americans.

Platner's campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

It's the latest sign of how Platner, who describes himself as a "working-class Mainer," has relied on his wealthy family for support. His father also loaned him the money to buy his house.

Platner has made the fertility treatments a centerpiece of his messaging on health care, saying he and his wife, Amy Gertner, 40, had to go to Norway for in vitro fertilization in January because they could not afford the "astronomical" costs for treatment in the United States. In repeated interviews, he suggested that he paid for the treatments himself.

But Platner's family—his father and in-laws—covered the costs of the IVF treatments as well as travel and lodging in Norway, the New York Times reported, citing a "person with knowledge of the financial arrangement" as well as Platner's campaign. According to Platner, IVF in the United States averages around $25,000 per round of treatments, versus just $5,500 in Norway, a popular destination for so-called fertility tourists.

"The expense of this in the United States is astronomical," Platner said in a January campaign video. "It needs to be available to absolutely everyone in this country, just like health care."

"We don't have that money. That's ridiculous," Platner added in an NBC News interview alongside his wife, Amy Gertner. The Midcoast Villager, which first reported on the Platners' IVF trip abroad, said the Platners "looked into paying out of pocket, and found that in Boston, the closest option to where they lived in Sullivan, the start-up costs alone would be $25,000 for a single round—far more than they can afford."

The cost of fertility tourism to Norway is significantly less expensive than in the United States, but it is still out of reach of many Americans. IVF costs are complicated and vary wildly by couple, but a full IVF cycle involving Norway (most fertility tourists only undergo the most expensive part of IVF in Norway) can cost as much as $15,000, plus the stiff costs associated with traveling to one of Europe's most expensive countries. Couples also need the flexibility to spend about two weeks overseas.

Platner has said that, if he is elected to the Senate, he hopes to provide Norwegian-style pricing to "working people" in the United States as part of a government-funded universal health care system.

The existential crisis that recently engulfed the British Labour Party has intensified over the past week, andit is now clear that the party is facing political extinction.

Two weeks ago,British voters showed their contempt for Labour, after enduring two years of scandal-ridden and ineffective government. The partylost almost 1,600 local council seats;ceded control of the Welsh parliament for the first time ever; andperformed very poorly in Scotland.

TheLabourParty has responded to thisunprecedented electoral drubbing by engaging in an unseemly orgy of political infightingthat will continue for months to come.

Within days,some 90 MPs announced that they no longer had faith in Keir Starmeras prime minister – and five cabinet members resigned, including Wes Streeting, the health secretary, who had been maneuvering to depose the unpopular Starmer for some time.

Streeting, however, declined to challenge Starmer for the leadership because he could not muster the support of the necessary 81 MPs to do so.

A week later,Streeting delivered an extraordinary speech in which he announced that he would contest the leadership when Starmer was eventually challenged, describedStarmer’s ascension to Labour leadership as “dishonest” and astonishingly urged Britain to re-join the European Union– thereby reviving the divisive Brexit issue that has poisoned British politics for over a decade, and had previously split the Labour Party.

Streeting, by injecting Brexit into the Labour leadership contest, has ensured that it will become much more divisive and bitter that it otherwise would have been.One Labour minister has already condemned Streeting for “re-opening the Brexit wars.”

Other potential challengers – Angela Rayner and Ed Miliband – have also declined to challenge Starmer at this stage, andthe unpopular Starmer appears determined to remain prime minister for the present.

This strange political impasse then provoked the ambitious mayor of Manchester,Andy Burnham, to launch a prospective challenge against Starmer. Burnham, however, cannot challenge at present as he is not in parliament – because earlier this year Starmer refused to endorse him as a candidate in a by-election in a safe Labour seat, that was subsequently won by the Greens.

Then, last week a young MP in the Manchester seat of Makerfield,Josh Symons, resigned from parliament so that Burnham could contest the resulting by-election(due to be held on June 18), win a seat in the Commons, and then challenge Starmer for the prime ministership. After defeating Starmer, Burnham would then have three years to win back those millions of voters that have recently deserted Labour, and lead Labour to victory in the 2029 general election.

This is the Machiavellian plan concocted by the apparatchiks that currently control the Labour Party – and Streeting, Rayner, and Miliband have, for the time being, acquiesced in it,no doubt expecting to be suitably rewarded with cabinet appointments if and when Burnham becomes prime minister.

There are, however, numerous, insuperable difficulties confronting this high-risk strategy.

Burnham is by no means certain to win the by-election that has been gifted him. He is currently a very popular mayor of Manchester,but at the recent council elections Reform won every ward in the Makerfield electorate– and voters may well take a dim view of their local member being edged out so as to allow Burnham to make a bid for the prime ministership.

In 1965, Prime Minister Harold Wilson engineered a similar piece of by-election spivery when Patrick Gordon Walker, who was slated to become foreign secretary, surprisingly lost his seat at the general election that brought Wilson to power a year before. Wilson subsequently arranged by-election in a safe Labour seat – in which voters refused to elect Walker.

Makerfield is a whiteworking-class electorate that voted overwhelmingly in favor of leaving the EU at the Brexit referendum in 2015 and is staunchly anti-immigrant. Josh Symons won the seat at last year’s election with a majority of 5,300 votes over the Reform party candidate.

Europe is facing an “energy crisis tsunami”following a series of political earthquakes, Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev has warned. The forecast comes as energy shocks caused by the US‑Israeli war on Iran continue to destabilize supplies across the region.

Republicans in both the House and Senate are quickly moving to stop the DOJ/IRS settlement with President Trumpthat establishes a $1.776 billion victim’s compensation fund for those targeted by corrupt government conduct.

The move in the Senate is particularly Machiavellian considering they recently established a $500,000 system of penalties for government conduct after they found out the Jack Smith investigation had subpoenaed their private phone records.

US seeking to boost energy exports to India – envoy

Washington is likely to push New Delhi to increase imports of oil and LNG when Secretary of State Marco Rubio visits the country next week

The administration of US President DonaldTrump is looking to sell more energy resources, mainly oil and LNG, to India, which has been hit by the disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. US Ambassador Sergio Gor told Bloomberg that India “has been receptive to diversification” of its sources of energy imports, which means “buying more American energy.”

“People have been very receptive to buying from the United States, and we’ve been very happy with that,” Gor said, according to Bloomberg.

Gor’s comments come days before Secretary of State Marco Rubio is due to visit New Delhi next week. The US has long tried to pressure India to stop oil imports from Russia, which has been the nation’s largest energy supplier since 2022.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration imposed punitive tariffs on Indian goods,linking them to trade with Russia. Thetariffs were later removedas part of a deal announced by Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under a preliminary trade agreement,the US cut tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18% in exchange for India halting purchases of Russian oil.

India, however, has never publicly stated that it would stop importing Russian oil, insisting that it will continue buying energy from all possible sources to protect the economy.

The Indian government has been under pressure to secure energy imports amid disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz caused by the US-Israeli war against Iran. New Delhi is considering a series of measures, including a fuel price hike andrestrictions on non-essential spending, to shield its foreign exchange reserves from soaring oil prices linked to the conflict.

Responding to a question about pressure on India as a result of the war, Gor blamed Iran for closing the strait. “The blame is not on the United States,” he told Bloomberg, adding thatthe US Treasury Department has allowed India to buy Russian oil, which would otherwise be subject to sanctions.

India, the world’s third-largest oil buyer, relies on imports for around 85% of its oil needs, making it vulnerable to rising energy prices and disruptions to supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.

Against the backdrop of global trade tensions, the Toyota Motor Corp. chairman billed the extravaganza, held in conjunction with an endurance race at the Toyota-owned circuit, as an international celebration of car culture and proof of Japan’s love for Motown metal.

U.S. Ambassador George Glass accompanied the charismatic Toyota front man at the Nov. 16 event, which showcased a demonstration run of six NASCARmachines specially shipped over for the occasion, with a clutch of star drivers to wow the American flag-waving crowd.

The men held court at the starting line, as the Japanese executive popped on a MAGA hat and peeled off his coat to reveal a “Trump-Vance Make America Great Again 2024” T-shirt.

Speaking before the event, Toyoda suggested it’s only natural some countries resort to tariffs to protect certain industries. But business leaders, he said, shouldn’t forget consumers.

“I’m not here to argue whether tariffs are good or bad. Every national leader wants to protect their own auto industry,” Toyoda said. “We are exploring ways to make tariffs a winner for everyone. The people we want most to be winners are our customers.”

The NASCAR run, featuring top drivers Jimmie Johnson, John Hunter Nemechek and Kamui Kobayashi, was more than a motorsports novelty.It is one of several quiet gestures Japan is deploying to signal openness to American car cultureand U.S. auto exports at a moment when Japanese carmakers are being battered by tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

Toyota’s Georgetown plant checking feasibility of Camry exports to Japan

Toyota, the world’s largest automaker and Japan’s top exporter to the U.S., has ratcheted up overtures in America following the summer’s breakthrough agreement to dial down Trump’s initial 27.5 percent duty on Japanese auto imports to a more manageable 15 percent.

==Toyota this month said it will invest $10 billion in the U.S. on “future mobility efforts.” That announcement came just weeks after Trump said, during a visit to Japan, that Toyota was preparing to invest $10 billion to build “auto plants all over” the United States.

At the time, the White House also said Toyota would market and sell made-in-America cars to Japan.==

“Plans to export its U.S.-made vehicles to Japan and open its distribution platform in Japan to U.S. automakers, as a result of Japan’s commitment to accept for sale in Japan U.S. manufactured and U.S. safety-certified vehicles without additional testing,” the statement said.

Among the Toyotas were the Camry sedan made at Toyota’s Georgetown, Ky., plant and the Highlander crossover and Tundra pickup. Toyota is evaluating how it might export Camrys from Georgetown to Japan, said Kerry Creech, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky.

Creech was on hand to pitch Toyota’s U.S. products to the Japanese public, as was Frank Voss, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, where the Sequoia SUV and Tundra pickup are assembled.

Toyota’s Georgetown plant doesn’t have orders yet to start making right-hand-drive Camrys for shipment to Japan, Creech said. But the company has exported right-hand-drive vehicles before and can retool the lines in rather short order, in less than six months, he said.

Toyota is readying Georgetown to produce electric vehicles. But after that ramp up is finished, the factory still has reserve capacity of 80,000-100,000 vehicles for export, he added.

“It’s not difficult,” Creech said of building Camrys for export. “It just takes a little more space.”

Akio Toyoda wants to promote American car culture in Japan

Japanese racing veteran Kobayashi, who has competed in Formula One and NASCAR, said he would personally welcome more American cars on Japanese roads.

“I’m racing United States, and there’s a lot of great cars in the United States, so I’m very happy to have cars from United States,” Kobayashi said. “For example, we have the Tundra. We don’t have it in Japan, but we might have it in the future. That’s great news.”

At the four-hour endurance race, organizers slathered on the Americana.

Food stalls featured a “U.S. meat menu” with such delectables as a “California grill BBQ burger,” a 1-pound steak and chili-cheese long fries. A North Carolina-born singer belted out the U.S. national anthem. And the throngs of Japanese race fans daintily fluttered American flags.

The endurance race series, known as Super Taikyu, also created a new “ST-USA Class” to welcome teams with American-made race cars, as a gesture to American car culture.

Toyoda even chose America’s best-selling vehicle as the day’s star car.

Before the NASCAR demo drive around Fuji’s twisting turns, the company’s top car guy and the Trump-appointed U.S. ambassador climbed aboard a massive double-cab Ford F-150, with Toyoda behind the wheel, Glass riding shotgun and the diplomat’s wife in the back.

Toyoda told him not to worry. “I’m a very good driver,” he quipped.

Toyoda then waved out the window and gunned it, leading the pack of stock cars down Fuji’s straight with the thunder of their V-8 engines echoing against the slopes of Mount Fuji.

“For now, tariffs are the method being used, but the goal is not to make just one party the winner,” Toyoda said. “We want customers, and everyone involved, to be winners.”

“Instead of working to help the American people, as so many cannot keep the lights on, keep food on the table, or pay their rent, Nancy Mace is instead introducing racist legislation that denies the very history of a country that has been proudly shaped by immigrants,” she said in a statement. “This is also insulting to the hundreds of thousands of constituents who elected naturalized citizens into office.”

“With the exception of Native Americans, every person in this country – including Nancy Mace – is descended from immigrants,” Jayapal continued. “And America is made stronger by the people from across the world with diverse talents who come here to live and work.”

Jayapal called her colleagues, including Republicans “who are naturalized citizens,” to condemn the proposed amendment.

“This constitutional amendment will put an end to it.”

Twenty-six House members, including 19 Democrats and seven Republicans, were born outside of the US.

In the upper chamber, six senators – four Democrats and two Republicans – were born outside the US.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger became the latest enemy of President Donald Trump’s to lose a Republican primary on Tuesday. (GA has known what a fraud he is, and the results proved it.)

Billionaire Rick Jackson and Lt. Gov. Burt Jones advanced to a runoff election for the GOP nomination for Georgia governor —locking out Raffensperger, who rose to prominence defending Georgia’s 2020 election results but struggled to gain traction among his party’s increasingly MAGA base.

Raffensperger’s defeat is another sign of Trump’s grip on the GOP, following the president’s wins ousting state Republican senators who clashed with him over redistricting in Indiana and Sen. Bill Cassidy’s loss in Louisiana on Saturday.

But the runoff also prolongs an already rancorous and expensive primary by several weeks. Jackson, a political newcomer who entered the race late but quickly rose in the polls, and Jones, who boasts Trump’s endorsement, are both courting the same MAGA voters.

The runoff will serve as a crucial test of the influence of Trump’s endorsement in the Republican party versus the power of Jackson’s seemingly endless cash.

Trump has repeatedly reaffirmed his support for Jones since Jackson entered the race, most recently during remarks at a February event in Rome, Georgia.The lieutenant governor spent the final few weeks of the campaign reminding voters of the president’s backing.

The spending, which is expected to balloon, has already been monstrous.Jackson has spent nearly $65 million of his own money, according to an AdImpact analysis.Jones has disbursed over $28 million over the course of the primary.

The pair’s dominance is a stark sign of just how muchthe Republican Party in Georgia has shifted right under Trump’s commandeering of the party.

Along with Raffensperger,Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr— another old-school, technocratic Republican who rejected Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election —also failed to break through during the race.

Gun Groups Push Back as New Jersey AG Subpoenas Dealers for 10 Years of Glock Buyer Records

Gun-rights groups are speaking out against New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, who recently sent subpoenas to firearms dealers across the state demanding customer records for every lawful Glock pistol sale to New Jersey residents over the past 10 years.

The subpoenas appear to stem from the state Attorney General’s Office’s 2025 public nuisance lawsuit against Glock, Inc., but the demand for individual customer records goes well beyond what that lawsuit’s legal theory would seem to require.

That hasn’t sat well with the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action, which argues that the records aren’t connected to the state’s case theory at all. NRA-ILA also points out that since New Jersey’s pistol permitting system already operates as a de facto handgun registry, the Attorney General can produce those records from the office’s own database without subpoenaing FFLs.

The catch: subpoenaed records become a matter of public record under New Jersey law in a way that registry records do not. NRA-ILA argues this is “being done solely for the purpose of harassing and doxxing residents who purchased the most popular pistol in America.”

“Subpoenaing law-abiding firearm dealers to help build a state gun registry is unconstitutional and utterly outrageous,” John Commerford, NRA-ILA executive director, said in a legislative alert. “If New Jersey believes it can trample the Second Amendment and federal law with impunity, they are gravely mistaken. The NRA will not stand idly by while progressive politicians attempt to implement this dangerous, Orwellian scheme to dox, track, and harass honest, law-abiding Americans, and we are prepared to take any action necessary to protect the rights of New Jersey gun owners.”

Russia’s KamAZ to Reintroduce 4-Day Workweek, Mass Layoffs, as Truck Market Slumps

Russia’s largest truck maker KamAZ will reintroduce a four-day workweek for most of its divisions starting June 1, as a sharp downturn in the domestic heavy truck market forces the company to scale back production plans, Russian media reported.

A preliminary order has already been signed, the Biznes Online outlet reported, citing sources at the plant. The company confirmed the move, pointing to a steep drop in demand.

The decision underscores the deepening crisis in Russia’s commercial vehicle sector, where high interest rates, weakening demand and a glut of unsold trucks — including vehicles returned to leasing firms after payment defaults — are weighing on manufacturers and raising broader concerns about industrial output and employment.

KamAZ said the Russian heavy truck market shrank by 40% in the first two months of 2026. While its own sales fell by a more modest 15% over the same period, its market share rose to 37%.

The company had already introduced a four-day week in August 2025 after the commercial vehicle market collapsed by nearly 60% in the first half of the year.

It returned to a full schedule in November following a large order from state security agencies, but conditions have since deteriorated again.

Data from industry agency Avtostat showed sales of trucks with a capacity above 16 tonnes fell 33% year-on-year in February to 2,900 units, and were down 40% over January–February.

“Nothing surprising here. The first two months’ figures show the decline is continuing,” Alexander Solntsev, editor-in-chief of Comvex Review, told Biznes Online.

KamAZ sold 1,063 trucks in February, down 11% year-on-year.

Analysts say the market has been hit by persistently high borrowing costs, excess inventories and a growing share of repossessed trucks returning to the market.

The structure of demand has also shifted, with dump trucks, traditionally accounting for 25–27% of sales, now making up just 16%, while the share of specialized vehicles has risen to 35%, reflecting weaker commercial activity.

KamAZ reported a net loss of 37 billion rubles ($458.8 million) in 2025 under Russian accounting standards, up more than elevenfold from the previous year.

Revenue fell 2.5% to 315.2 billion rubles ($3.91 billion), while interest expenses reached 35.6 billion rubles ($441.4 million).

CEO Sergei Kogogin said in December that the truck market was in a “deep crisis,” citing high interest rates, inflation and market oversupply.

The Center for Strategic Research said the automotive industry was the worst-performing segment of Russian industry in the first 10 months of 2025, with vehicle production down 22.2% year-on-year. In October alone, output fell 38.4%.

The think tank warned that risks to employment and related industries would continue to grow without monetary easing and targeted state support.

KamAZ and fellow Russian manufacturer GAZ are exploring expansion into Africa in a bid to offset weak domestic demand.

Russia’s ambassador to Ethiopia said in February that the companies were finalizing feasibility studies for local production, aiming to enter the market with competitive products.

“Now, we have red states and blue states that go after fraud aggressively, but we also unfortunately have some states, mostly blue states, unfortunately, that do not take Medicaid fraud very seriously,” he said.

In response, Vance said the administration would withhold $1.3 billion in Medicaid-related payments to California and also consider withholding from other states.

The administration put each of the 50 states on notice with recent letters signed by Health and Human Services Inspector General Thomas “March” Bell. It focused on state-level Medicaid Fraud Control Units (MFCUs), which receive federal funding.

Letters also went to the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Here’s what to know about the units and Vance’s efforts.

Federal Grants at Stake

The letters threatened to take away all federal grants provided to a state’s Medicaid program if the state was not fulfilling its duties.

“It has become clear ... that many MFCUs have been happy to rake in taxpayer dollars without fighting fraud,” Bell stated in the letter. “And for too long, there has been a lack of leadership at HHS that has allowed billions of our fellow Americans’ dollars to flow out to State capitals to fund MFCUs to supposedly fight Medicaid fraud without any real oversight.”

He said that the units must comply with certain requirements to receive funding. Federal law requires the units to investigate and prosecute fraud, investigate patient abuse and neglect in Medicaid-funded facilities, and recover overpayments.

The units must operate statewide, employ investigators, auditors, and attorneys, and remain separate from the state agency that administers Medicaid. The law requires the units to either possess prosecutorial authority or formally coordinate with prosecutors.
