The remains of an Arkansas teenager who died aboard a battleshipduring the Pearl Harbor attack are returning home for burial nearly 85 years after his death.
The Navy will bury Fireman 3rd Class Royle Luker with full military honors on May 30 at New Bethel Cemetery in Plainview, the Arkansastown he left to enlist in June 1941, Stars and Stripes reported. Rear Adm. Michael Van Poots, deputy commander of Submarine Forces, will preside over the ceremony.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency confirmed Luker’s identity on May 29, 2024, using forensic methods unavailable when he died, the agency’s records show.His remains had rested in a grave labeled “unknown” until investigators reopened the case.
Luker received a long list of posthumous decorations, among them the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal, the New York Post reported. He leaves behind two nephews, Donald Bradford Henderson and John Luker, along with a niece, Becky Downen Lensing. He will be buried beside his parents, World War I veteran George F. Luker and his mother, Nettie Estelle Luker.
The 17-year-old was one of 106 crewmen killed aboard the USS West Virginia when Japanese forces struck on Dec. 7, 1941, KARK reported. Counter-flooding by other sailors kept the ship from capsizing, letting it settle on the shallow harbor floor, and crews later repaired the vessel and put it back in service by 1944.
Rescuers heard tapping from sailors trapped inside the hull but lacked any way to reach men sitting atop live ammunition, according to Stars and Stripes. Three of them survived in a sealed storeroom until Dec. 23, leaving a calendar with 16 days marked off in red pencil.
Salvage teams recovered roughly 70 bodies, and 34 went unidentified for decades before the agency exhumed 35 caskets in 2017, according to the Navy.

Story at a Glance:
As decisions always have pros and cons, making the correct one is often quite challenging. One framework, “expected value” (EV), solves this puzzle by calculating the relative probability of a good (positive) and bad (negative) outcome.
In medicine, while frameworks like EV should be used to guide medical policies and clinical decisions, they frequently are not, resulting in practices like mass COVID vaccination which have explicitly negative EVs being adopted and then held to regardless of public pushback or evidence to the contrary.
Much of this stems from our widespread societal faith that large randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the definitive arbiter of scientific truth, despite their numerous shortcomings. In contrast, valid and affordable approaches for determining scientific truth are continually marginalized, making it nearly impossible to “prove” competing therapies work or that sanctioned therapies have serious harms.
Much of this originated from two subjective linguistic interpretations which the FDA then used to prohibit the public’s access to life-changing (but non-commercializable) therapies like DMSO and protect its industry sponsors—which as DMSO stories in this article show, has created profound consequences that have been well-hidden from all of us.
This article will explore how this dysfunctional dynamic has harmed the health of America, meaningful changes that could preserve the vital functions of the FDA while simultaneously preventing it from sabotaging America’s health, and the changing political winds we’ve helped create which are gradually forcing those changes to happen.
The majority of decisions in life aren’t clear cut as they have both an upside and a downside (or multiple upsides and downsides). However, rather than being fully cognizant of the complexity of the decision, the human mind will typically narrow the picture and see only one side of the coin to reduce this large cognitive load. Many perpetually unresolved political conflicts essentially result from this, as each side emotionally primes their adherents to focus on the arguments in favor of their position and those which undermine the other side, resulting in both sides having a view of reality where their side is correct and the other is irredeemably wrong—which in some cases holds true, but typically is not.

“As a quadriplegic, you lie in bed, a total vegetable, unable to move any of your extremities. Your mind functions, but you can’t pass urine. You can’t have a bowel movement without help. You are totally dependent upon someone else to perform the basic functions — to keep you alive.”
I had asked who stood to gain most from DMSO.
“As I get to know the quadriplegics, ever so many of them eventually say to me, ‘You know, Dr. Jacob, I couldn’t even commit suicide.’”
At this time, he was treating eight quadriplegics, and of them only one had a recently incurred injury. He felt, as most doctors do, that treatment is more fruitful in new conditions than in old ones. The one fresh case was that of a sixteen-year-old girl, a fine athlete, who dove off a board and landed on her neck on the bottom of the pool.
“Her doctor was pessimistic but willing to try almost anything that offered a glimmer of hope. She was a complete quadriplegic — utterly helpless.”
She was on DMSO for an entire year. Gradually — one by one, it seemed — her organs began to function again. Eventually she walked. And now she is in college, doing very well.

The risk of a catastrophic explosion of a damaged chemical tank in Southern California has been eliminated following a close overnight inspection that confirmed a crack in the tank relieved pressure and cooled the chemical, authorities said Monday.
Officials said crews conducted tank temperature checks at night to reduce risks to firefighters, avoiding daytime operations when heat from the tank made conditions around it most dangerous. The overnight mission allowed crews to verify the crack and confirm temperatures were falling, Orange County Fire Authority division chief Craig Covey said Monday morning.
Covey said the results of overnight evaluation of the tank — that the temperature inside had dropped and that pressure had lowered — was “incredibly positive news.”
However, evacuation orders remained in place for about 50,000 people in Garden Grove, California, located south of Los Angeles.
Covey said falling temperatures and the release of pressure from the tank were allowing officials to “turn the corner on this incident” after days of concern about a possible explosion.

Canadian authorities have dismantled an alleged organised criminal network, backed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), targeting South Asian business owners through intimidation, extortion and violence, in what officials described as a breakthrough against rising gang activity in parts of Ontario.
According to top intelligence sources, Peel Regional Police carried out an operation named “Project Outsource" that led to the arrest of 17 to 18 individuals, most of them from Brampton. Sources said 16 of those arrested are of South Asian origin and face nearly 97 to 106 criminal charges collectively.

“For those driving the Great River Road in Grafton, Illinois, it might be a shock to see 12 U.S. Army Rangers scaling side of a cliff.
The bronze statues are part of a new memorial to be dedicated on the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landing. During the famed allied assault on June 6, 1944, Army Rangers scaled the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc to overtake Germany artillery firing at troops at Omaha and Utah beaches.
The City of Grafton, Illinois, recreated the dramatic assault with the National Memorial of Military Ascent.
For retired colonel and Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow, it was a trip to France that provided the inspiration to bring Normandy back with him to the Great River Road.
“The U.S. Army Rangers 2nd Battalion climbed the cliffs at 7:10 that morning to take out the German guns,” Morrow said. “There were 225 Rangers that climbed, 77 were killed, and 152 were wounded, and the remainder continued to fight for two days with German counterattacks until they linked up to the forces on Omaha Beach.” . . . “

The IDF struck the city of Tyre late Monday after multiple public warnings that it would do so, following an increase in Hezbollah drone strikes against Israelis.
Tyre is in the southern half of the country, but is beyond the smaller security zone strip within southern Lebanon which the IDF took over in March, and the absence of the IDF in that spot allows Hezbollah to launch attacks from there.
In fact, the IDF had begun attacking Tyre in recent days with long-range strikes and appeared ready to up the ante this week.

Trump Tells Arab States Joining Abraham Accords Should Be 'Mandatory' - Throws Open Door For Iran In Grand Deal
President Trump is still trying to play the role of the globe's ultimate deal-maker via Truth Social, using a mix of mandatory diplomacy and ultimate economic carrots, issuing a lengthy missive on Iran talks and the Abraham Accords on Monday morning.
He introduced the post by stating that negotiations with Tehran are "proceeding nicely" before dropping a provocative diplomatic bombshell: a demand that a big list of major Middle Eastern nations immediately sign onto the Abraham Accords as a prerequisite for any broader peace framework.
The most unexpected aspect to the post laid out that if Tehran plays ball with Washington, Trump is dangling the prospect of the Islamic Republic itself joining the regional coalition, which it must be remembered hinges on 'normalization' with Israel.
"I stated that, after all the work done by the United States to try and pull this very complex puzzle together, it should be mandatory that all of these Countries, at a minimum, simultaneously, sign onto the Abraham Accords," Trump wrote Monday, referencing a Saturday phone call with Arab leaders.
Trump detailed further:
Those Countries discussed are Saudi Arabia, The United Arab Emirates (already a Member!), Qatar, Pakistan, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain (already a Member!). It may be possible that one or two have a reason for not doing so, and that will be accepted, but most should be ready, willing, and able to make this Settlement with Iran a far more Historic Event than it would, otherwise, be. The Abraham Accords have proven to be, for the Countries involved (The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan, and Kazakhstan), a Financial, Economic, and Social BOOM, even during this time of Conflict and War, with the current Members never even suggesting leaving, or taking so much as even a pause.
The above was coupled with the following ultimatum: "It should start with the immediate signing by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and everybody else should follow suit. If they don’t, they should not be part of this Deal in that it shows bad intention."
And then he dropped the significant twist related to Tehran, in claiming that several of the regional leaders he spoke with "would be honored, as soon as our Document is signed, to have the Islamic Republic of Iran as part of the Abraham Accords. Wow, now that would be something special!"
Inviting Iran to join the Abraham Accords as a part of a broader final deal framework has resulted in a lot of head-scratching, given that just weeks ago Trump repeatedly threatened to bomb the country 'back to the stone age' and effectively end 'civilization' there. US rhetoric has been filled with scorn for Iran, and yet it is now being asked to join a grand US-backed alliance.
Trump is his very long message issued a final directive in the following:

EU urges strict adherence to truce in southern Lebanon
A recurring problem in the ongoing Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon is that attacks are targeting paramedics and hospitals in the region. The IDF maintains that they are in some way secretly supporting Hezbollah, though the evidence doesn’t support that, and as the number of slain medical workers grows, there is also a growing backlash against the strategy.
The IDF bombardment of Hiram Hospital in the southern city of Tyre left at least 25 health care workers wounded. Attacks damaged nurses’ quarters as well as patient facilities in the area.
This was just one of the hospitals in the south that were targeted over the weekend, as officials reported a similar facility destroyed in Nabatieh District. No casualties were reported in that incident, however, as the locals had already been evacuated.
EU officials were expressing unease about how often these Israeli attacks on hospitals or other health care targets keep getting reported, and while there was a broad statement from the EU urging “strict adherence” to the ceasefire that is notionally in place, nations are more and more willing to criticize the policy.
Germany’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing “deep alarm” about the repeated attacks on health workers, noted the number of violations of the ongoing ceasefire and concluded with an urge to comply with UN Security Council resolution 1701, a resolution that is some 20 years old at this point.
Governments and NGOs have been issuing similar statements for weeks now, but this appears not to be affecting the overall conflict, beyond the IDF not even offering statements to nominally justify individual attacks as often anymore, and such strikes simply happening as part of the general background noise of the ongoing offensive.
