Doomer Fail: New Coal-Fired Power Plants Surge to 10-Year Global High

The world loves coal. That is the simple message from results showing new coal-fired power plants hit a global 10-year high in 2025, defying climate doomerswho decry its use and long for wind farms, solar panels and hydro power everywhere.

Rising gas prices and supply disruptions linked to the Middle East crisis are just some of the factors pushing countries like China, Indonesia, India, Japan, South Korea, Germany, and Italy to rely more heavily on dependable coal-fired energy security even as the global coal fleet generated less electricity – for now.

Overall coal power capacity — plants that came online or were commissioned — jumped 3.5 percent last year according to a report from Global Energy Monitor (GEM), which has tracked coal power for more than a decade, AFP reports.

The overwhelming majority of that — 95 percent — was in China and India, GEM said, with the U.S. also keenly embracing the power source under President Donald Trump who calls it “beautiful, clean coal,” as Breitbart News reported.

According to the president, his administration has also approved more than 70 permits for new mining projects, after Biden approved none throughout his term.

Beijing sees coal as a reliable failsafe for intermittent renewable supply, particularly for after power shortages several years ago, the AFP report notes.

India, the world’s most populous country, is leaning heavily on coal-fired sources to meet soaring electricity demand.

In Africa, coal proposals were again concentrated in Zimbabwe and Zambia, which together accounted for two-thirds of new coal development in the region

Globally, the retirement of coal power slowed last year, with nearly70 percent of units that were due to end operations instead staying online, GEM said per AFP.

In Europe, those missed targets were linked primarily to decisions taken during the 2022-23 energy crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In theUnited States however, retirement delays reflect a determined government push for coal as a direct aid to energy self-sufficiency, said Shearer.

“U.S. coal-fired generation rose by more than 80 TWh (terawatt hours) year-on-year, a figure so large that no other country came close,” said Christine Shearer, project manager of GEM’s Global Coal Plant Tracker and author of the report.

The surge “was not simply a function of (demand) growth, it reflected a policy environment that actively encouraged it,” she added.

United States Senators Bernie Moreno (R-OH) and Tim Sheehy (R-MT) have warned against the acquisition of a Connecticut-based bank by Spanish banking giant Santander, highlighting the risks posed to American workers and businesses by decisions made in Madrid amid growing divisions between the socialist government and Washington.

In a letter exclusively obtained by Breitbart News, Republican Senators Moreno and Sheehy expressed deep concerns about the pending acquisition of Webster Financial Corporation, a $84 billion-asset Connecticut-based bank, by Spain’s Banco Santander.

Writing to U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, Comptroller of the Currency Jonathan Gould, and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Chairman Travis Hill, the American lawmakers said that the “ceding control over U.S. deposits, data, and credit decisions to Spain’s premier bank raises questions that warrant careful regulatory scrutiny”.

The Senators noted that the matter has become particularly sensitive “given that Spain has not always acted as a reliable ally in advancing U.S. security priorities.”

Relations between the United States and Spain have soured considerably in recent months, with far-left y Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez openly condemning the U.S. and Israel for their conflict against the Islamist regime in Tehran.

The socialist inhabitant of the Palacio de la Moncloa even went so far as to bar the American military from using its bases or airspace for operations involving the Iranian conflict. In turn, President Donald Trump has said he is considering withdrawing all troops from Spain.

Senators Moreno and Sheehy said that their concerns over the potential acquisition were “amplified by Santander’s recent history with Iran-related sanctions risk,” noting that the UK branch of the Spanish banking giant was alleged to have provided a bank account to an Iranian shell company for a state-controlled petrochemical company claimed to have raised hundreds of millions for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Quds Force and other militant proxy forces via Russian intelligence.

Santander UK said that it “conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations” and claimed to have “not found any breach by it of U.S. sanctions against Iran in connection with these allegations.”

However, the U.S. Senators noted that even if no sanctions were directly violated, “the fact remains that Iran’s state apparatus and intelligence networks were able to exploit Santander’s systems to help finance a murderous, anti-American regime’s Revolutionary Guard and its Russian partners.”

“If Iranian front companies were able to route sanctioned funds through a seemingly innocuous Santander account in the United Kingdom, U.S. financial regulatory authorițies must investigate whether Santander’s existing and future U.S. operations, including any merged institution that holds significant American deposits, are safe against similar exploitation,” they wrote.

The Republican lawmakers went on to note that the bank had additionally faced accusations of “anti-money laundering procedure failings allowed Beltcastle, a financial intermediary with well-established links to the Cali Cartel and other Colombian narco-trafficking groups, to bank with Santander UK.”

Moreno and Sheehy also expressed concern over the potential Webster acquisition, given that it would elevate Santander to one of the top ten commercial and retail banks in the United States by assets under its control, at an estimated $327 billion. Although Santander’s American operations are conducted under the Santander Holdings USA holding company and are therefore subject to American financial regulations, the Senators still warned of the potential pitfalls of empowering a firm that is “ultimately controlled by the foreign parent”.

“This is more than a simple business transaction: allowing a foreign bank to consolidate control over a critical regional lender would tie the economic health of American communities to decisions made abroad. This dynamic risks leaving American workers and businesses exposed to decisions driven by a foreign entity rather than domestic needs and priorities,” they said.

Sir Keir Starmer’s government said that it will not release further documents on the vetting of disgraced Lord Mandelson until next month and even then will be significantly redacted, sparking accusations of a potential “cover-up”.

Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Darren Jones told lawmakers this week that Parliament will have to wait to review government files relating to the hiring of Labour veteran Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to Washington, despite his close ties with convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The decision, which was made despite the government being aware that Mandelson had continued the relationship even after Epstein’s child prostitution conviction in 2007, has resulted in major resignations, including Prime Minister Starmer’s former chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney and ex-Labour Together anti-Breitbart censorship activist Josh Simons.

The scandal, which threatens to persist given the ongoing police investigation into Mandelson for allegedly passing British state secrets to Epstein in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, has even threatened to take down Starmer, who has so far refused to resign over the matter or his party’s disastrous at the local elections earlier this month.

However, with potentially more explosive information from the government documents on Mandelson yet to be disclosed, the timetable and the government’s ability to censor details have become a hot-button issue in Westminster.

Jones said that publicly disclosing all vetting documents would undermine the system itself, as those entering government expect a level of privacy, the Times of London reported.

However, he said that some of the files would be released next month and that the reasons for the redactions would be made evident. Yet, Jones did not commit to releasing the documents before the upcoming Makerfield by-election, which is likely to play a critical role in determining whether Prime Minister Starmer stays in office.

Critics, including Conservative MP Neil O’Brien, accused the government of a “cover-up”, arguing that failing to release all documents concerning the Mandelson affair represented “an extremely serious” breach of trust.

The Deputy Chairman of the intelligence and security committee (ISC) in the House of Commons suggested that if the government refuses to release the documents in full this would undermine “parliamentary sovereignty”.

Wright noted that lawmakers voted in February to compel the government to disclose documents related to Mandelson’s appointment.

Even longtime Labour MP, Dame Emily Thornberry, who chairs the foreign affairs select committee, accused the government of putting “obstacles” in front of those seeking to “get to the truth”.

Conservative MP and former Brexit secretary, Sir David Davis, suggested that he would be willing to table a motion of contempt against the government if it fails to fully comply with the February order from parliament mandating the release of the Mandelson files.

Ironically, the measure was last deployed by Sir Keir Starmer when he served in opposition in 2018 to force the release of advice given to then-Prime Minister Theresa May’s post-Brexit deal with the European Union.

Jones denied that he was a party to a cover-up, saying that he would resign if he thought it was the case.

“When the government publishes the second tranche of documents, it will be clear from the published information the basis on which content has been redacted,” he claimed.

A 1.5-Solar-Mass Star in a Tight Orbit Around the 4.3-Million Solar-Mass Black Hole at the Milky-Way Center

The fastest moving star, labeled S301, was discovered recently by Stefan Gillessen’s team at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, Germany (as first reported here, with the full paper accessible here).

The star was discovered by near-infrared interferometry on 8-meter telescopes, using the GRAVITY instrument in operation at the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO’s) Very Large Telescope (VLT).

Last night, I sat next to Stefan at the reception dinner of the annual conference of Harvard’s Black Hole Initiative, for which I served as the founding director a decade ago.

This 1.5-solar-mass star moves on a highly elliptical orbit with a period of 8.7 years and eccentricity of 0.98 around the supermassive black hole at the Milky-Way center, called Sagittarius A*. This black hole has a long history of swallowing 4.3 million solar masses of gas and stars from its environment.

The peak velocity of S301 is 25,000 kilometers per second or 8.3% of the speed of light, as it comes down to a distance of 140 times the Schwarzschild radius of the black hole — which defines the scale of the black hole mouth from where even light cannot escape.

If the star were to pass ten times closer to the black hole, it would have been ripped apart by tidal gravity into a stream of gas that shines brightly as it feeds the mouth of this spacetime beast.

The orbit of S301 can be used to test expectations from Albert Einstein’s formulation of gravity as the curvature of spacetime.

Einstein’s equations predict that S301’s orbit will precess in response to the spin of the black hole, offering a precise new way to measure how fast Sagittarius A* is rotating within the coming decade.

How did this star get so close to the black hole?

A natural mechanism, proposed by Jack Hills in a 1988 paper published here, is the tidal break-up of a pair of stars by the black hole. About half of solar-mass stars form in binaries.

When a binary star system gets close enough to the black hole, the tidal gravity becomes stronger than the gravitational binding of the two stars and breaks the binary apart, sending one star out at a speed of up to thousands of kilometers per second and launching the second star into a tighter orbit around the black hole.

Indeed, a population of hypervelocity stars had been discovered on their way out in the Milky-Way halo by Warren Brown and collaborators from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (as reported here).

Man Accuses NASA’s Artemis II Crew of Faking Their Space Mission

Artemis II crew members were confronted at the Capitol by an unknown man accusing NASA of faking space travel. The lunar mission astronauts appeared in blue flight suits during a hallway exchange shared online.

A new post claimed the man accused them of lying about going to space. The moment drew backlash from viewers, including one commenter who noted the mission was livestreamed. The confrontation came after the crew’s historic lunar flight.

The caption said, “A man at the Capitol accused the Artemis astronauts of lying about going to space.” The man told them, “Stop lying. Stop acting” as Victor Glover came through.

In the clip, astronauts Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen were spotted standing in the hall. He also said, “You all never went to space.” Christina Koch kept a smiling face.

Meanwhile, Victor Glover appeared to look toward the camera, smile slightly, and wave, ignoring the conspiratorial remarks. The crew and the woman holding papers appeared to keep walking as the man continued.

The man continued the confrontation with religious and conspiracy claims. He said, “Apologies as God’s watching you all.” Then, he called the mission a “PSYOP” and said, “NASA is a joke.”

He also said, “Repent before God, y’all.” The crew did not appear to argue in the short clip. At the end, the woman in the stripped white dress shuts the man off with “that’s enough.”

A user named later replied, “I mean… it was livestreamed.” The comment added, “Does he realize the logistics of faking everything on a livestream?”

For context, the Artemis II crew included Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. The agency’s mission sent them around the Moon in April 2026 aboard Orion.

On May 12, they appeared at Senate offices for public remarks. They later visited Capitol Hill, where lawmakers welcomed the returning astronauts.

The mission marked the first crewed lunar flight under the Artemis program. It also served as a test before future lunar landing missions.

Trump's top White House enforcer Susie Wiles ordered to turn over secret records

Donald Trump's White House staff have been ordered by a federal judge to preserve presidential records, including text messages, after the administration tried to dismiss a Watergate-era transparency law as 'unconstitutional.'

US District Judge John Bates granted a preliminary injunction on Wednesday that requires White House staff to comply with the 1978 Presidential Records Act, enacted in the wake of the wire-tapping scandal that felled Richard Nixon.

The order applies to Trump's top enforcers, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and her deputy Stephen Miller, as well as the National Security Council, Council of Economic Advisers and officials working within the Executive Office of the President.

The decision comes after the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel last month claimed that the staff did not need to abide by the Records Act because it exceeds Congress' power and is therefore, unconstitutional.

Three watchdogs, the American Historical Association, American Oversight and the Freedom of the Press Foundation, sued the Justice Department and asked the judge to compel them to comply with the act.

They warned there was 'strong reason' to believe Trump would try to retain records when his term ends, citing the 15 boxes he kept after his first term, some marked classified, which sparked the FBI's 2022 Mar-a-Lago raid.

Bates opened his 54-page decision with a pointed literary flourish, quoting George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four: 'Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.'

The George W. Bush appointee added that scrapping the act would rob Congress and future presidents of the ability to learn from history, echoing the inscription on the National Archives Building: 'What is past is prologue.'

Bates rejected DOJ's claim that the presidency's unique constitutional weight shields it from the act, writing that 'while the presidency is a singularly important institution, that gravity does not free it from modest constraint. Quite the opposite.'

'Each branch of government derives its authority from the trust placed in it by the People, and Congress has validly determined that this Act helps to maintain that trust by shining some light on the activities of the President and his aides,' the judge wrote.

He noted that every president since Nixon, including Trump in his first term, had complied with the law 'without complaint' for nearly 50 years.

The absence of another Watergate-level scandal since Nixon 'suggests that the sunshine disinfectant of the Records Act is working as intended,' Bates added.

The judge took aim at the White House's new guidance on text messages, which tells staff to preserve only those that are the 'sole record' of official decision-making. Under that rule, the judge warned, 'almost no texts would ever be preserved.'

Chioma Chukwu, executive director of American Oversight, called it 'an important victory for presidential accountability,' warning the administration had tried to replace decades of settled law with 'a system dependent largely on presidential discretion and public trust.'

The injunction takes effect at 9am on May 26.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told the Daily Mail: 'President Trump is the most transparent and accessible President in history. He is committed to preserving records from his historic time in office.

'The administration has made it crystal clear we will maintain a rigorous records retention program in order to properly preserve all materials related to: the performance of staff duties for historical value, the administrative record of policy decisions and actions, and litigation needs.

'The President will also keep the current program in place for electronic records – emails and documents cannot be deleted from the White House system. This ruling fundamentally misunderstands the Administration’s position and we are confident that we will ultimately prevail.'

Trump to Ease EPA Refrigerant Regulations in Move Aimed at Lowering Grocery Prices

Administration officials estimate Americans will save approximately $2.4 billion from the new guidelines.

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump will announce two Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) actions on May 21 aimed at reducing restrictions on refrigerants, according to a White House official.

“Today, the Trump EPA is fulfilling President Trump’s promise to lower costs and is fixing every problem we can under the authority Congress gave us,” EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said in a statement. “Our actions allow businesses to choose the refrigeration systems that work best for them, saving them billions of dollars.”

The move is expected to lower grocery prices and transportation costs for refrigerated items, while reducing air-conditioning expenses in homes and businesses. Administration officials estimated annual savings of $2.4 billion, including about $800 million from lower grocery prices, $100 million across industries, and about $1.5 billion in reduced transportation costs.

At issue are hydrofluorocarbons, the gases used as a cooling agent in freezers, air conditioning, and transport refrigeration.

Trump is revising an EPA regulation established by President Joe Biden in 2023, known as the Technology Transitions Rule, and a technical change to Biden’s Emissions Reduction and Reclamation regulation set in 2024.

“They didn’t protect human health or the environment and instead piled on costly, unattainable restrictions beyond what the law requires.

“This will be felt directly by American families in lower grocery prices.”

Expanding the type of refrigerants Americans can use will protect more than 350,000 jobs while also giving homeowners more options when repairing or replacing their air conditioners.

Zeldin and Kevin Hassett, assistant to the president for economic policy, joined Trump in the Oval Office for the announcement.

Business leaders in attendance included Greg Foran, CEO of the grocery chain The Kroger Co.; William Kevin McDaniel, CEO of McDaniel Family Investments, which controls the grocery chain Piggly Wiggly; and Richard Niemann, owner of Niemann Foods; among others.

Trump has rescinded numerous Biden-era regulations since taking office for a second term, targeting provisions related to energy, climate, labor, and immigration, while dismantling rules mandating diversity, equity, and inclusion, or DEI, guidelines.

A February announcement from the EPA removed the Endangerment Finding—a 2009 regulation set under President Barack Obama—a decision which Zeldin calculated would save Americans upward of $1.3 trillion, making it the largest such reform in U.S. history, the agency declared at the time.

The president’s recent deregulatory actions are meant to tackle inflation, according to officials.

Rising gas prices and persistent inflation are impacting Americans’ finances, with the national average for a gallon of gas topping $4.56 as of May 21.

“Americans were right to be frustrated with the Biden-era refrigerant rules,” Zeldin said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clashed with Donald Trump in a furious phone call that left the Israeli leader with his 'hair on fire', a source has revealed.

On Tuesday evening, the two leaders held a difficult and lengthy phone call where they disagreed on the way forward in the Iran war.

Netanyahu increasingly doubts further negotiations with Tehran will yield a peace deal and wants to resume military strikes, according to Israel's Channel 12.

Shameless Midwest mom who oversaw $250m Somali fraud scam gets ENORMOUS prison sentence that will see her remain behind bars until she's a very elderly woman

The Midwest mother who masterminded the roughly $250 million Somali-linked fraud in Minnesota was sentenced to more than 41 years in prison on Thursday morning.

Aimee Bock, 45, was convicted last March of multiple counts involving conspiracy, wire fraud and bribery for her role in the Feeding Our Future scam, which prosecutors called the country's largest Covid-era fraud.

Feeding Our Future received about $250 million in federal funds while falsely claiming to be serving 91 million meals for hungry children, prosecutors said.

Instead, the taxpayer money was used to finance expensive lifestyles, including Bock's.

US District Judge Nancy Brasel made an example of Bock as she sentenced her to prison and admonished her in front of the packed Minneapolis courtroom.

'This was a vortex of fraud and you were its epicenter,' Brasel told Bock. 'A sentence of less than 500 months would not do justice to the people of Minnesota, who in a very real sense were the victims of this fraud.'

Assistant US Attorney Rebecca Kline told the court that the government believed that 'disabling Aimee Bock from ever meaningfully participating in society ever again [was] the only just outcome.'

Before being sentenced, Bock was in tears as she apologized and said, 'I don't have the words to express just how horrible I feel,' according to the Minnesota Star Tribune. 'I know I'm responsible.'

Uh-oh, the International Space Station is leaking again

NASA confirmed Thursday that the Russian segment of the International Space Station has begun leaking atmosphere into space again. It’s an old problem that NASA recently hoped was resolved.

For more than half a decade, engineers from Roscosmos and NASA have been tracking the leak rate from a small Russian module attached to the space station that leads to a docking port.

The source of these leaks, microscopic structural cracks, have been difficult to find and address.

In January, NASA said that after multiple inspections and sealant applications, the pressure inside this segment, known as the PrK module, had reached a “stable configuration.”

The PrK module is essentially a transfer tunnel attached to the Zvezda Service Module on the Russian segment of the space station.

This announcement by NASA was greeted by a sigh of relief in the space community, as atmospheric leaks on a pressure vessel like the International Space Station are never a good thing.

Leaks begin again

Unfortunately, the leak returned three weeks ago. After a couple of sources reported this to Ars, NASA confirmed the issue on Thursday.

On May 1, after Russian cosmonauts unloaded cargo from the Progress 95 cargo spacecraft, Roscosmos noted a “slow pressure drop” in the PrK module.

“Teams performed data analysis, which indicated a loss of about one pound per day,” NASA spokesman Josh Finch told Ars.

“Roscosmos allowed the pressure in the transfer tunnel to gradually decrease while monitoring the rate. The area now is being maintained at a lower pressure, with small repressurizations as needed.

There are no impacts to station operations, and NASA and Roscosmos are coordinating on next steps.”

Although there is no impact on astronauts on board the station, nor any immediate concerns about the station’s health, the returning leak issue raises new questions about the long-term viability of the International Space Station.
