UK Summons Chinese Ambassador Over Spying Allegation

The British Foreign Ministry on May 9 stated that it had summoned the Chinese ambassador after a London court convicted two men, including a former British immigration officer, of spying for the Chinese communist regime.

The Chinese ambassador, Zheng Zeguang, was called to the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office on May 8 for an official reprimand, according to a British government statement.

The UK Foreign Office stated that it had made clear that “any attempts by foreign states to intimidate, harass or harm individuals or communities” on British soil will not be tolerated and that such activities constitute “a serious breach of the UK’s sovereignty.”

“We will continue to use the full range of tools available to protect our security and hold China to account for actions which undermine our safety and democratic values,” it stated.

The British government’s move came just a day after a jury found Wai Chi-leung and Yuen Chung-biu guilty under the National Security Act 2023 of assisting a foreign intelligence service, following a weeks-long trial at the Central Criminal Court in London. Continue…

A Canadian teacher from Richmond, B.C., who was fired because she gave a presentation to her class that supported the 2022 trucker Freedom Convoy against COVID mandates has been given back her job by an arbitrator.

The teacher, Nicole Kowal-Seafoot, ultimately lost her job teaching grade 6 and 7 students in 2024 after showing, in 2022, students a cartoon of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with his head on a chicken body and carrying a syringe as well as a child wearing a mask that was chained to the face.

The video clip also showed messaging against COVID restrictions and jab mandates. It also had a clip of American political commentator Tucker Carlson and pictures opposing Trudeau’s COVID views.

Records show that Kowal-Seafoot started to cry during the video being shown to the class, with her noting that the Freedom Convoy led her to have hope “for the first time in two years.” Continue…

TDSB to Lay Off Over 200 Admin Workers, Eliminate Vacant Roles

The Toronto District School Board is cutting 218 central staff positions and eliminating a number of vacant positions in order to refocus resources, the board says.

The staff cuts, along with the elimination of 91 vacant roles, will not impact classroom staff, the TDSB said in a May 12 statement provided to The Epoch Times.

The move comes amid declining enrolment numbers across the board’s schools and growing financial pressures within the district.

“After years of declining enrolment, the TDSB is taking steps to modernize and right-size the number of central administration staff to ensure resources are focused where they matter most – in schools and classrooms,” the statement read.

The reductions are expected to take effect ahead of the 2026-27 school year.

The TDSB remains Canada’s largest school board, serving approximately 239,000 students across 579 schools, including elementary, secondary, and adult education institutions. The board has said enrolment has declined by roughly 5,000 students in recent years. Continue…

A new Bank of Canada report estimates that prices for goods hit by the counter-tariffs Canada place on the United States rose about 6 percent more than non-tariffed goods in 2025.

The May 6 report said prices for goods subject to counter-tariffs increased compared to non-tariffed goods, but the effect disappeared roughly three months after Canada removed most of its counter-tariffs.

In retaliation for U.S. President Donald Trump’s initial tariffs, the Liberal government responded in March 2025 by imposing 25 percent tariffs on a variety of items for six months, such as grocery products, appliances, electronics, furniture, and household items.

Bank of Canada researchers compared the costs of more than 110,000 tariffed goods from seven retailers to products that were not impacted by Canadian counter-tariffs from February to December 2025. The researchers found the prices of tariffed goods rose gradually after March 4, and were 6 percent higher than the control group by mid-June.

Around a quarter of the price increase was passed on to Canadian consumers, which matched “estimates of tariff pass-through to consumer prices in the United States,” the report says. Businesses were willing to absorb most of the cost when they expected tariffs to be short-lived, but would pass price increases on to consumers if they expected tariffs to last a long time.

The results showed that when most Canadian counter-tariffs were removed on Sept. 1, prices for the tariffed goods “fell back quickly” toward those of the control group when most Canadian counter-tariffs were removed on Sept. 1. Continue…

The due date for Canadians to complete the 2026 Canadian census has arrived, and while Statistics Canada says it’s mandatory to fill it out, some Canadians have raised concerns about privacy.

StatCan has asked Canadians to fill out the census form by May 12, but the agency says that is a “reference date” instead of a hard deadline. Those who fail to complete the survey, however, may be penalized.

The census is held every five years in Canada and the federal Statistics Act says every household must complete a 2026 Census of Population questionnaire. Respondents’ answers are collected under the authority of the act and are kept “strictly confidential,” StatCan says.

Some Canadians have criticized the census on social media, with several posting pictures of ripped-up forms or envelopes marked “return to sender,” sometimes including angry messages to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The census is a survey conducted by StatCan to count the entire Canadian population. StatCan says the data collected “helps paint a statistical portrait of Canada’s population and the places we live.” Continue…

Global Affairs Canada contacted the RCMP and Public Safety Canada after learning about fake bomb threats sent to venues hosting Shen Yun Performing Arts shows across Canada, according to a statement signed by Rob Oliphant, parliamentary secretary to Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, on behalf of the minister.

“Global Affairs Canada [GAC] is aware of the very troubling bombing and mass shooting threats that targeted Shen Yun dance performances across Canada,” reads the statement.

The May 8 statement is a response to a petition presented by Conservative MP Kelly DeRidder to the House of Commons on March 25, which was first covered by Blacklock’s Reporter.

The minister’s response comes after recent incidents of hoax bomb threats targeting theatres across Canada and around the world in an effort to stop Shen Yun from performing. Shen Yun, which performs with the tagline “China Before Communism,” is a New York-based classical Chinese dance company which aims to revive China’s traditional culture. “NATO as a defensive alliance committed to collective security could never be more important than it is today,” Anand told AFP in an interview in Brussels.

Canada’s top diplomat was meeting counterparts from the EU’s 27 nations in the latest demonstration of deepening ties as Trump has rocked the global order.

Ottawa has been stepping up ties with the EU and other key partners as part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s efforts to increase cooperation between “middle powers.”

“The EU is an extremely important facet of Canada’s work to diversify trade, and we will continue to build supply chains, to build trading relationships so that we double non-U.S. trade over the next 10 years,” she said.

More public servants will be needed to administer Liberals' military mobilization plan: documents

The Defence department will need more money to hire additional public servants and military personnel to handle the influx of 300,000 Canadians into a new mobilization force, according to federal government documents.

The mobilization plan now being developed is an initiative being pushed by Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan.

The initiative, outlined in a May 2025 document, calls for the creation of a 300,000-strong supplementary reserve force and a boost to the primary reserves from the current 23,561 to 100,000.

The mobilization plan was first reported by the Ottawa Citizen in October 2025. The new pool of 300,000 volunteers would be used in the event of a national crisis or emergency.

Those working on the defence mobilization plan say that in addition to needing more public servants and military personnel to process the massive influx of new recruits, it will also require new infrastructure to support healthcare for the volunteers, according to internal documents.

“Funding will be required for new military and civilian positions to review enrollment medical and dental files, and for provisions for healthcare, particularly on Bases/Wings used for training,” noted the documents. “Clinic infrastructure may have to be increased.”

An elementary school in Winnipeg will send students home with “family gifts” this week, instead of traditional Mother’s Day and Father’s Day presents, part of a new trend among some Canadian schools downplaying or eliminating the traditional parental celebrations.

Grade 1 and 2 teachers at Sage Creek School in Winnipeg informed parents of the change last week, just days before Mother’s Day.

The student-made gifts will be distributed on May 15, to coincide with the International Day of Families.

Winnipeg Free Press reports that teachers wrote a memo to parents explaining that the change is intended to “respect the diversity of families that are represented in our classroom and community.”

The memo added that students could use quiet and free-choice time to make cards or crafts for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and other upcoming observances.

Oddly, however, exactly three places showed an increase, in the form of a surge of between 21 and 35 per cent. Researchers are not sure why, but Gainesville Fla., Cleveland, Ohio, and Portland, Ore., alone saw the number of Canadians shoot up, at least based on their cellphone usage.

Researchers at the School of Cities at the University of Toronto analyzed cellphone activity data from about seven million phones each month, finding a year-over-year decline of about 42 per cent in Canadian visits to U.S. metropolitan areas. Continue…

Ireland is finally safe.

Clive Johnston has been convicted and can no longer menace the public.

Johnson, 78, is a retired pastor who committed the heinous offense of preaching near the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.

That was considered within the “safe access zone” under Northern Ireland’s Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) Act.

The Act prohibits “influencing,” “preventing or impeding access,” or “causing harassment, alarm or distress” to a protected person within 100 meters (about 328 feet) of facilities where abortions are performed.

So Johnson was found guilty of “influencing” inside the protected zone and fined 450 pounds (about $614).

The language of the law is absurdly vague and abusively broad. What constitutes an “influence” is undefined and could include any religious, political, or social exchange. Would it include encouragements to have abortions?

It is equally perverse to treat praying or preaching the same as blocking or impeding access to a clinic. Finally, a hospital engages in a wide array of activities that raise religious or political issues that can be the subject of free speech.

We previously saw several cases in the United Kingdom where people were arrested for silently praying near abortion clinics.

For its part, Ireland has been a leader in censorship and the criminalization of speech. As the leader of the Irish Green Party proclaimed, “We are restricting freedom for the public good.”

By the way, his offense was reading John 3:16, including “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

What could perish in Ireland and the United Kingdom is free expression as speech regulators target bad influences under time, place, and manner laws.

The project calls for a consultant to:

* identify technologies and components for study,

* assess Canada’s electricity supply chains,

* quantify trade opportunities,

* and produce a final strategic report for policymakers.

In other words: a consultant-funded think tank wants consultants to write reports for government officials already drowning in consultant reports.

A North Carolina gay couple with five sons has been arrested on criminal charges following an investigation into alleged child sexual abuse material.

Cyber tips from the Crimes Against Children database led investigators to believe that 39-year-old Joshua Lee Gilliam and 39-year-old Ronald Wayne Lynch Jr. were in possession of child sexual abuse material. Investigators later searched the pair’s house, where multiple electronic devices were seized.

The two are being charged with first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. Gilliam faces additional charges of first-degree statutory sexual offense and indecent liberties with a minor, and received no bond. Lynch also faces a charge of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and received a $360,000 secured bond.

“The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office continues to work closely with the NCSBI and partner agencies to investigate crimes involving the exploitation of children and to ensure the safety and protection of victims and citizens of Harnett County,” the sheriff’s office said, according to CBS 17.

Katy Faust, founder of the children’s rights nonprofit Them Before Us, commented on the case in a post on X, saying that the couple acquired their last child via surrogacy.

“BREAKING: Josh and Wayne Gilliam have been arrested on child sex abuse charges. Per X bio, they have five sons and were ‘married" in 2020. The last child at least was acquired at the hospital,” Faust wrote. “Note: sexual predators can procure surrogate babies with no background checks.”

It is unclear at this time if the couple’s adopted children were involved in the crimes.

Court documents filed during the trial of former RCMP officer William Majcher reveal the Canadian residents were targeted by Chinese police through the regime’s “Operation Fox Hunt” and “Operation Sky Net” campaigns, according to a report by CTV News.

The documents indicate the Chinese nationals may have been forced to return to China against their will to face punishment for Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-alleged financial crimes, with some potentially facing life imprisonment or a death sentence.

Majcher, 63, has pleaded not guilty to allegations that he was preparing to use “threat, accusation, menace or violence” to target B.C.-based real estate mogul Hongwei “Kevin” Sun “at the direction of, for the benefit of or in association with the People’s Republic of China.” Majcher’s trial began on April 20 and the judge’s verdict is expected to be delivered on May 13. The RCMP began investigating Majcher in 2021, according to court documents.

Sun is allegedly wanted in China for committing financial fraud against the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, yielding hundreds of millions of dollars, and would likely face a death sentence if he were repatriated, the court heard.

“We see more precursors coming into the Port of Vancouver, coming into Canada, and the Canadians, with the Mexican cartels in country, have started producing and manufacturing fentanyl in Canada,” he added.

Ahead of their annual march for life against abortion and euthanasia, the Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) called on MPs to vote for a bill to stop the expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) to include those suffering from mental illness.

“The next euthanasia time bomb is set to explode on March 17, 2027, when eligibility will automatically expand to mentally ill patients,” CLC Director of Political Operations Jack Fonseca said, referring to the planned expansion of MAID.

Speaking at an event on Parliament Hill on May 13, he added that the Conservative Party’s Bill C-218 would exclude all mental disorders from eligibility for euthanasia, and urged MPs from all parties to vote for the bill.

“Bill C-218 would ensure Canada continues to prioritize suicide prevention instead of suicide provision,” Fonseca said.

Canada’s MAID regime was initially scheduled to allow eligibility for Canadians whose sole medical condition is a mental illness beginning March 17, 2023, but the federal government has since postponed the change multiple times, most recently delaying implementation until March 17, 2027. The delays came in response to concerns from medical providers and some provinces that the health-care system was not equipped to implement it safely.

The federal government has not clarified whether it will allow MAID to expand to the mentally ill in 2027. Prime Minister Mark Carney said on May 6 that he would wait for the release of a parliamentary report on MAID expansion before deciding, while Justice Minister Sean Fraser also said the decision would follow the report’s release. Ontario lawyer Gavin McNeill Grant impregnated a 17-year-old Crown ward, showed off pictures of her in lingerie to his coworker, and assaulted two women, including a client-turned-girlfriend, according to a decision of Ontario’s Law Society Tribunal.

In all, Grant, who worked as a criminal lawyer in Owen Sound, Ont., engaged in what two provincial Law Societies called a pattern of sexual, drug and physical misconduct involving at least six females, including underage girls.

While complaints about Grant’s sexual misconduct began as early as 2014, it took until June 2017 before a complaint was made to the Law Society of Ontario (LSO), and until the fall of 2018 for the regulator’s independent disciplinary tribunal to suspend Grant’s licence.

It wasn’t until January 2022 that the LSO finally revoked Grant’s licence. “His conduct exploited the power imbalance created by his status as a lawyer and was predatory in nature,” the LSO’s disciplinary tribunal concluded.

“It is conduct of the worst sort.”

It took another 20 months for the Law Society of Alberta — where Grant was also licensed — to do the same there.

But those revocations had little impact on Grant, who was not criminally charged with offences in Canada. He had already moved to Thailand.

On his Thai website advertising his teaching services, Grant says he has degrees in political science and history, as well as law.

“I was a lawyer before becoming a teacher,” reads his online biography. “I enjoy teaching and I look forward to meeting you and starting our learning adventure together.” Continue…

Every interaction on the platform became a data point revealing information about the user. This tracking applied to not only adults’ accounts, but also kids’ profiles.”

The release went on to state that, “Netflix has built a surveillance program designed to illegally collect and profit from Texans’ personal data without their consent, and my office will do everything in our power to stop it.”

“I’m honored to have the support of Scarborough Southwest Liberals and I’m ready to get to work,” Hafiz said after the win.

The U.S. government has reached a settlement with a former New York Times reporter who was kicked off Twitter during the COVID-19 pandemic for posts about vaccines.

Officials in a settlement agreement dated May 11 and obtained by The Epoch Times said that the government “did in fact violate the First Amendment by exerting substantial coercive pressure on social media companies such as Twitter to suppress disfavored speech like Plaintiff’s,” referring to former New York reporter Alex Berenson.

Officials said they were paying Berenson $150,000 to settle the case, which was filed in 2023 against then-President Joe Biden, Pfizer board member Dr. Scott Gottlieb, and others. In exchange, Berenson moved to dismiss the case.

“I'd like to thank the Trump administration for acknowledging the government’s unconstitutional actions against me in 2021 and standing for my First Amendment rights as a journalist and American,” Berenson told The Epoch Times in an email.

The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) — a national conservation group — with chapters in northern and southern Alberta, has received millions of dollars over recent years while simultaneously organizing anti-coal campaigns and advocating for permanent restrictions on coal mining in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains.

According to CPAWS’ financial disclosures, the organization generated roughly $23.37 million in revenue in 2025, with just over $7 million coming from government grants.

Among the publicly listed grants for 2025 is a $750,000 contribution from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

Tory Leader Pierre Poilievre posted support for Gunn doing “what’s right” by holding CBC to account, while MP Michelle Rempel Garner accused the public broadcaster of “paying fraudsters with tax dollars.”

Carney announced his government’s new National Electricity Strategy, dubbed Powering Canada Strong, at a May 14 press conference on Parliament Hill. He said the grid expansion is estimated to generate up to $15 billion in energy savings, with seven in 10 households paying less for their total energy by 2050.

“Canada will double its electricity generation over the course of the next two decades, because the path to affordability is electrification, the path to competitiveness is electrification, the path to net-zero is electrification,” Carney said, adding that many goods such as cars, heaters, and factory machines, are switching to electric power.

He said the federal government will work with provinces, territories, indigenous peoples, and utilities unions over the next few months to identify how to execute the plan “most effectively and affordably.”

Carney noted doubling Canada’s electricity generation will require “massive investments,” with estimated costs at more than $1 trillion from now until 2050.

Toronto researchers find gene associated with common autism behaviours

Researchers at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto have discovered a gene that influences the behaviours commonly linked to autism.

The study published in the May 13 issue of the science journal Nature, looked at genetic data from 9,349 people with autism and 8,332 without the condition.

This was a 15-year venture, Dr. Stephen Scherer, senior study author and chief of research at SickKids told National Post in an email.

“We were looking for something we thought might exist but did not know until we found it. We found a different kind of gene involved in a complex neurodevelopmental condition, which is a first. The fact we found it involved uniquely associated with the core features of autism (social behavioural and repetitive traits), and not learning and cognitive traits, may help explain all forms of autism.”

The newly pinpointed gene has been dubbed PTCHD1-AS. It was discovered using a “revolutionary technology called whole genome sequencing,” says Dr. Scherer. This technology allows analysis of all genes in the DNA, he adds. “Other lesser technologies would have missed this discovery.”

PTCHD1-AS may play a role in impaired social interaction and repetitive behaviours such as self-stimulating, according to the SickKids team.

“The fact we found genetic changes in a novel gene like this in autism surprised many people (including geneticists) and only now with the paper coming in the world’s top scientific journal will they believe it. Scientists around the world will now pivot their research to study these novel genetic pathways,” says Dr. Scherer.

He notes that his team is working “full-steam ahead” on PTCHS1-AS. “We see this as perhaps the best entry point into developing therapeutics.” Continue…

26 more people in Canada being contacted after 'low risk' exposure to confirmed hantavirus case

Twenty-six more Canadians who were on a flight with a confirmed case of hantavirus are now being contacted by public health officials but are considered to be at “low or minimal risk” of infection because of where they were seated, federal health officials said Thursday.

While the outbreak associated with the MV Hondius cruise ship is evolving, the risk to the general population in Canada remains low and “further spread of the virus within Canada is not expected,” Canada’s chief public health officer, Dr. Joss Reimer, said.

“But given the severity of the symptoms of the virus, we are taking a precautionary approach to ensure that Canadians are protected,” Reimer told reporters.

Some Canadians already isolating were travelling on a Saint Helena-Johannesburg-Amsterdam flight taken by a Dutch woman April 25 after her husband died while at sea.

When the ship docked in Saint Helena, the woman boarded the flight to Johannesburg, but was then taken off the connecting flight to Amsterdam when she started to show symptoms. She died the next day in hospital in South Africa. Dutch media have reported that passengers who sat in the same row as the woman or in the two rows in front and two rows behind her are considered high-risk contacts who should be in quarantine.

The 26 newly identified travellers were deemed by local European public health authorities as being “no risk,” Reimer said.

“Again, in Canada we are taking a precautionary approach, and we have deemed them to minimal or low risk as opposed to no risk,” she said.

The provinces and territories are contacting all 26 to make sure they’re aware that they were on the affected flight and what symptoms to watch for. However, Reimer said she is not directing that they self-isolate but added that local public health officials could recommend isolation following a more thorough risk assessment. Continue…

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency is pointing its finger at the Port of Vancouver, alleging it to be an entry point for the chemicals used to manufacture fentanyl, which can then find its way into the U.S.

DEA Administrator Terrance Cole has stated publicly that the agency is “very conscious” of precursor chemicals moving through the port and warns that the DEA is “keeping (its) eye on Canada.”

Cole told U.S. senators in Washington on Tuesday that the chemicals are entering the port, before being transported to cartel-linked labs in Canada and ultimately crossing into the U.S. across the shared border, the CBC reports.

Cole made his comments during a Senate appropriations committee examining budget requests from the DEA, FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies.

He said the DEA will be expanding its Canadian presence, including plans for two more offices in 2027, though he didn’t identify Vancouver as one of them. At present, the DEA has two offices in Canada — in the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa and U.S. Consulate in Vancouver.

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Africa’s top public health body on Friday confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in Congo’s remote Ituri province, with 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths recorded so far.

The deaths and suspected cases have been recorded mainly in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, the Africa Centres for Disease Control ​and Prevention said in a statement.

The Ebola virus is highly contagious and can be contracted through bodily fluids such as vomit, blood or semen. The disease it causes is rare, but severe and often fatal.

“Four deaths have been reported among laboratory-confirmed cases. Suspected cases have also been reported in Bunia, pending confirmation,” the agency said, referring to the capital of Ituri province, near the border with Uganda.

It said preliminary laboratory results had detected the Ebola virus in 13 of 20 samples. The results suggest a non-Ebola Zaire strain of the virus with sequencing ongoing to further characterize the strain, the agency said. The Ebola Zaire strain has been prominent in Congo’s past outbreaks.

The World Health Organization said last year that Congo has a stockpile of treatments and some 2,000 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine, However, the vaccine is effective against the Ebola Zaire strain of the virus, it said. Continue…

The report documents the rate of diagnoses of various major health conditions and diseases, as well as phenomena that affect health such as domestic violence, tobacco and alcohol use, and pollution. The report found significant declines in the incidents of several major global health conditions and evidence of some improved lifestyle changes globally, but lamented with each bit of good news that the results were not in line with the “Sustainable Development Goals” for 2030 that the United Nations had set. The Danish government has suspended plans for a solid rocket propellant facility intended to supply Fire Point, a Ukrainian defense company facing allegations of involvement in high-level corruption, according to one of the firm’s executives.

Originally operating as a film scouting agency, Fire Point emerged as a major player in Ukraine’s defense sector last year, receiving strong public backing from Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky and reportedly securing contracts worth up to $1 billion.

The Danish government had used national security provisions to bypass potential legal objections surrounding the construction of a facility in Vojens, southern Jutland, where fuel for Fire Point’s missile systems was expected to be manufactured. The backlash began after Sim told a technology conference earlier this week that he has “11 AI agents” running “a lot” of his work “in the background.” Critics, including mayoral challenger Kareem Allam, questioned how sensitive information is handled and warned of potential data leaks linked to third-party AI services.

On Wednesday, Sim clarified that AI tools are not being used to make policy or governance decisions at Vancouver City Hall, adding that the technology is mainly used for administrative support, research, and productivity tasks. He explained the systems help him scan news, follow financial and global events, and manage diet planning.

Sim’s comments about using AI agents came as Canada’s federal government announced plans to support the construction of two new AI data centers in Vancouver. Ottawa has spent more than CAD$800 million (over US$580 million) on AI-related technologies and services over the past three years, Canada’s National Observer reported this week.

The cost-of-living crisis continues as Canadians struggle to make ends meet.

New insolvency data shows Canadian households are buckling under mounting debt pressure, with more than 37,000 people filing for insolvency in just the first three months of 2026.

According to figures from the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, 37,121 Canadians sought relief under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act between January and March of this year, working out to roughly 17 insolvency filings every hour.

The numbers mark the highest quarterly insolvency total since the fallout of the 2008 global financial crisis.

Consumer insolvencies were up 8.5 per cent compared to the same period last year, and climbed 6.5 per cent from the final quarter of 2025.

The financial strain is not limited to households. Another 1,232 Canadian businesses filed for insolvency during the same three-month period. While business insolvencies were slightly lower than a year ago, they rose nearly 10 per cent from the previous quarter, suggesting corporate financial pressure may also be intensifying. Continue…

A convicted axe murderer who spent more than half a century behind bars in Manitoba has lost his day parole after prison officials discovered he had been falsely claiming Métis ancestry for years in order to access Indigenous programming and culturally-based rehabilitation services.

According to a newly released decision from the Parole Board of Canada, 74-year-old Jack Wayne Bender admitted he fabricated his Indigenous identity while participating in Indigenous correctional programs and working with elders inside prison. The board revoked his day parole on May 5 after the deception came to light.

Two residents of British Columbia, Canada have been charged in Washington state after federal authorities say they smuggled Vietnamese nationals into the United States through Point Roberts, a small US peninsula accessible by land only through Canada.

Van Phuong Vu, 28, of Vancouver, and Johnny Huynh, 36, of Burnaby, appeared in US District Court in Tacoma on charges of conspiracy to transport certain aliens for private financial gain.

Authorities said the scheme unfolded on May 5, 2026, when US Border Patrol was alerted to a group crossing from Canada into Point Roberts along the beach. Agents later located the suspected migrants at Bellingham Airport after they had allegedly flown from Point Roberts to the mainland US.

Agents first observed a group leaving the charter flight terminal with Huynh and heading toward a nearby hotel, where they were stopped. A second group, allegedly accompanied by Vu, was intercepted shortly after another flight arrived.

Federal authorities determined that eight Vietnamese nationals had entered the US without inspection. Some allegedly told law enforcement they had agreed to pay between $13,000 and $15,000 to be smuggled into the country.

According to prosecutors, some of the migrants had communicated with the smuggling group over social media and were told to pay the smuggling fees after reaching their final destinations, including New York and Tennessee.

Vu, a Vietnamese citizen and lawful permanent resident of Canada, and Huynh, a Canadian citizen, face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

“I commend the US Border Patrol for their quick and diligent work in this case,” said First Assistant US Attorney Neil Floyd. “An early morning alert of border crossing at the beach led to the apprehension of eight illegal aliens and charges against those who sought to profit from the smuggling event.”

The Canadian government is facing pushback to amend a bill that opponents say would allow the government to circumvent encryption in devices and platforms. Tech companies, including Apple, have threatened to pull out of Canada if the bill passes.

Bill C-22 was introduced in March, titled "An Act respecting lawful access." The bill aims to amend various laws "to modernize certain provisions respecting the timely gathering and production of data and information during an investigation." Companies, however, say that the bill would weaken encryption used on various platforms, exposing customers to risks such as hackers.

Apple, which uses encryption to protect customers’ data, said in a statement, "at a time of rising and pervasive threats from malicious actors seeking access to user information, Bill C-22, as drafted, would undermine our ability to offer the powerful privacy and security features users expect from Apple. This legislation could allow the Canadian government to force companies to break encryption by inserting backdoors into their products – something Apple will never do."

The statement added, "We will continue our longstanding cooperation with governments to help protect public safety while also advocating tirelessly against any measures that would put users’ personal data at risk."

Signal, the encrypted messaging app, has said that it would pull out of Canada if the bill is passed. Signal vice-president of strategy and global affairs Udbhav Tiwari said the company "would rather pull out of the country than be compelled to compromise on the privacy promises we have made to our users." He added, "Bill C-22 could potentially allow hackers to exploit these very vulnerabilities engineered into electronic systems, with private messaging services serving as an ideal target for foreign adversaries."

“End-to-end encryption is incompatible with exceptional access, no matter how creative the route taken to achieve it,” Tiwari said. “Provisions that enable the deliberate engineering of vulnerabilities into critical infrastructure like Signal are a grave threat to privacy everywhere.”

Windscribe, a Canadian-based VPN service, said in response to Signal’s warning, "We won't be far behind if C-22 passes. In its current state, VPNs would almost certainly require us to log identifying user data. Signal isn't headquartered in Canada so they can just shut off Canadian servers, but our HQ is. We pay an ungodly amount of taxes to this corrupt government, and in return they want to destroy the entire essence of our service to basically spy on its own citizens. Not happening. We'll move HQ and take our taxes elsewhere."

Tobi Lutke, the CEO of Shopify, wrote, "C-22 is looking like a huge mistake. It worries me a great deal. There is so much nonsense in there that It may well end up dealing a death blow to Canadian tech viability." He added in a separate post, "C-22 must be scrapped."

Police charge five 'Calgary men' in violent South Asian extortion-linked kidnapping case

Calgary police have laid charges against five men following what investigators describe as a violent, coordinated kidnapping tied to an ongoing extortion series targeting members of the South Asian community, marking what officers say is a significant escalation in the pattern of attacks.

The investigation by the Calgary Police Service Organized Crime & Offender Management Section centres on an incident that began on May 6, when a man was allegedly abducted from a residence in Edmonton by four suspects before being transported to Calgary under threat.

Police say the victim was assaulted, threatened with a firearm, and forced into a vehicle during the initial abduction between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

He was later driven to a home in Calgary’s Cityscape neighbourhood, where investigators allege additional suspects and vehicles were waiting as part of a coordinated extortion attempt targeting the victim’s associate.

According to police, the suspects tried to compel the victim to lure his friend outside the residence so he could be targeted in the extortion scheme.

When he refused, he was assaulted again.

While the suspects remained outside the home, the intended target and his wife attempted to leave but were allegedly followed and threatened with a firearm, forcing them back inside where they contacted police.

Shortly after, officers conducted a traffic stop near Metis Tr. and 104 Ave.N.E., arresting two men believed to be involved in the Cityscape incident.

Police said the initial Edmonton kidnapping had not yet been reported at that time.

The suspects later transported the victim back to Edmonton, where he was released near his residence early the following morning. The victim then contacted police to report the kidnapping.

On May 12, with assistance from the CPS Tactical Team, investigators located and arrested two additional suspects during a traffic stop in the 600 block of Martindale Blvd. N.E.

Police also seized a privately manufactured firearm during the investigation.

In total, four men have been charged and a fifth suspect is wanted on warrants. Police say additional individuals may still be involved and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Charged are Taranveer Singh, 24, and Daksh Gautam, 25, Akashdeep Singh, 18, and Pardeep Singh, 24, all of Calgary.

The charges include kidnapping with a firearm, pointing a firearm, unlawful confinement, assault with a weapon, and assault, among other offences.

Court appearances are scheduled between May and June.

Gagandeep Singh, 29, is currently wanted on warrants for multiple firearms-related kidnapping and assault charges.

Police say he has tattoos of a woman on his right forearm and a blue and red eagle on his left forearm and is known to have ties to Calgary, Ontario and BC.

“This is a significant escalation in violence in the extortion incidents that we have seen in Calgary so far,” said Supt. Jeff Bell of the CPS Criminal Operations & Intelligence Division.

He said coordination with policing partners across jurisdictions helped accelerate arrests.

Since April 2025, Calgary has seen 45 extortion-related incidents in the South Asian community, including 19 involving shootings at homes, businesses or vehicles. Police say 11 people have been charged so far in connection with the broader series.

An Ontario truck driver who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison in connection with a crash that killed an Olympic figure skater and injured several others.

Sukhwinder Sidhu had been driving for 16 hours when he crashed into the car of figure skater Alexandra Paul, killing her and injuring four others including her 10-month-old son, whose leg was broken.

Sidhu pleaded guilty in February to dangerous driving, causing the crash on Aug. 22, 2023, at a construction zone in the rural township of Melancthon, just north of Toronto.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Clayton Conlan heard evidence that Sidhu, who had several prior infractions for speeding, had been driving at about 108 km/h in the marked 60 km/h construction zone when he crashed into several cars, including Paul’s.

Following the reading of victim impact statements and an apology from Sidhu, Justice Conlan handed Sidhu a seven-year driving ban, along with the prison sentence. Continue…

U.S. Under Secretary of State Sarah Rogers has again spoken out on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in Canada, this time commenting on a tribunal ruling that found views opposing “systemic racism” theories are not grounded in political or legal principles.

The decision involves a Simon Fraser University political science professor who was denied a job because he did not support DEI.

The B.C. human rights tribunal decided against holding a hearing on the issue last month. Adjudicator Devyn Cousineau said in her April 15 ruling that the educator had no reasonable likelihood of proving that he was denied the position because of his political views, because opposition to DEI did not constitute a political stance under the law.

Rogers posted a portion of the tribunal’s decision on social media to accompany her comments on the case.

“The court’s reasoning here is that if you reject ‘systemic racism’ theories, and resulting DEI prescriptions, your views bear no apparent relation to politics or law,” she said in a May 13 post. “Thus, those views are unprotected in Canada.”

Rogers last year also criticized a report by UK-based Global Disinformation Index (GDI), which labelled “digital denialism” of Canadian residential schools as an example of “hate speech” that harms democracy. Continue…

Mexican cartels do not have a “significant” presence in synthetic drug production in Canada, the RCMP said in reaction to concerns among top U.S. law enforcement officials that the cartels are moving operations to Canada to produce and distribute fentanyl.

Available intelligence indicates Mexican cartels “do not have a significant or controlling presence in Canada’s synthetic drug production landscape,” an RCMP spokesperson told The Epoch Times.

“We recognize that our U.S. counterparts are taking significant steps to disrupt serious and organized crime operations, including cartels, in several countries, and we are committed to continuing to work with them to that end; thereby safeguarding the citizens of both our countries,” a spokesperson for the RCMP said in a May 14 emailed statement.

“Organized crime groups seek to increase profit however possible, and new trends continue to emerge as long as demand exists. Our shared goal is ensuring that these organized crime groups do not expand their operations and gain a foothold within Canada.”

The remarks come after Terry Cole, head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and FBI Director Kash Patel told a U.S. Senate Committee on May 12 of their organizations’ efforts to disrupt new drug production facilities in Canada, in addition to working to prevent source countries like China and India from shipping narcotics ingredients to North America. The United States has charged 13 people for trafficking firearms from New Hampshire into Canada in a law enforcement operation that traced guns to Canadian crime scenes.

“This tracking network allegedly exploited border geography and reservation corridors to move firearms into Canada while attempting to avoid law enforcement detection,” said U.S. Attorney for New Hampshire Erin Creegan at a news conference in Concord, N.H. on Thursday.

Court documents said members of the Akwesasne reservation in New York travelled to Vermont, where they enlisted Justin Jackson to purchase firearms on their behalf.

The documents allege that since Jackson was prohibited from purchasing firearms, he got Melissa Longe, Dustin Tuttle, Caleb Wilcott and Doug Mulligan to buy guns from licensed dealers in New Hampshire—a scheme known as “straw” purchasing.

“The allegations paint a troubling picture of how straw purchasing fuels violent criminal networks across the northeast and into Canada,” Creegan said.

The firearm trafficking began in 2021 and ran until at least 2024, the documents said. Continue…

American officials say a man from India has pleaded guilty to his role in smuggling Indian migrants into the United States from Canada.

The U.S. Justice Department says in a news release that Shivam Lnu was charged earlier this year with smuggling a dozen people across the border.

It says that according to court documents, Lnu directed operations beginning from at least October 2024 to June 2025 to smuggle people into New York state.

The Justice Department says his role was to co-ordinate drivers to pick up migrants and take them to stash houses around northern New York and to hotels in Plattsburgh, about 100 kilometres south of Montreal.

It says that in January 2025, U.S. Border Patrol found a total of 12 migrants in two vehicles that tried to flee from agents.

Justice officials say the 22-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit alien smuggling and three counts of alien smuggling for financial gain, and faces up to 15 years in prison.

He is set to be sentenced Sept. 4.

The Supreme Court of Canada has recognized intimate partner violence as a distinct legal basis for pursuing civil damages.

The top court’s ruling today comes in the case of a woman who suffered years of physical and emotional abuse by her husband during a 16-year marriage.

The court says intimate partner violence is a pernicious social ill deserving the full attention of the law.

It says the existing torts of assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress fail to remedy the specific wrong to dignity, autonomy and equality that intimate partner violence creates.

Stakeholders now expect the company could make a final investment decision by the end of the year.

LNG Canada Phase 2 was referred to the federal Major Projects Office for steering last year. Phase 1 of the project, in Kitimat, B.C., came online in summer 2025 and exported Canada’s first shipments of liquified natural gas (LNG).

LNG Canada is a joint venture between multinationals Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Korea Gas.

In response to the court ruling quashing the Stay Free Alberta petition to invoke an independence referendum, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Chief Allan Adam was reported as saying, “The court has spoken — and so have the First Nations.”

While the court may have spoken through Liberal appointed Justice Shaina Leonard, it only spoke on behalf of a tiny segment of Alberta’s First Nations. Chief Adam only represents one small Indigenous band, and it can’t be assumed he speaks for all of them.

Adam is the chief of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, which has a total of 1,567 registered members. Only 33 of those members live on reserve, and 213 live on adjacent Crown land.

At best, Adam may speak for 0.55% of Alberta’s Indigenous population.

Considering Allen’s habit of taking foreign funding and his history of adverse interactions with the RCMP, his voice is not one of the most credible when seeking input from First Nations, though legacy media regularly seek him out for comment.

Four Alberta chiefs took part in the court challenge against the citizens’ initiative petitioning. When combined, the membership of the bands represented by the chiefs is just over 9% of Alberta’s First Nations population. The other 44 Indigenous chiefs in Alberta did not take part in the court action.

Recent polling commissioned by Act For Alberta found 46% of First Nations respondents would vote for independence in a referendum.

This indicates that not only are First Nations members in Alberta divided on the question of independence, but support for the concept may be stronger among First Nations members than any other identifiable group in the province.

Nepalese authorities disclosed that investigators had kept Dalglish under surveillance for several weeks before moving in to take him into custody.

Dalglish was previously accused of targeting vulnerable boys from impoverished families by offering promises of education, jobs, and travel opportunities before sexually abusing them. At the 2019 sentencing, the judge required Dalglish to pay approximately $9,100 in restitution.

A senior citizen is in hospital in critical condition and two Vancouver police officers were injured after a vehicle-ramming incident in Vancouver’s West End on Friday morning.

A male suspect, who has not been named, allegedly rammed into several vehicles, sped through a section of Nelson Park, and intentionally drove along a sidewalk, according to a statement by the Vancouver Police Department.

Police said they received a report at 5:30 a.m. on May 15 about a man driving erratically in the area of Comox and Broughton streets. The driver was allegedly hitting several objects along the streets and in the dog park area of Nelson Park.

Witnesses told police they had to scramble to get out of the way of the suspect’s vehicle, the statement said, adding that a senior riding a motorized scooter was struck when he was unable to evade the vehicle in time.

The vehicle, which appears to be a dark-colored SUV in photos provided by police, came to a stop when it struck a police cruiser and flipped onto its side. In the photos, the front of the police cruiser can be seen heavily damaged with its hood crumpled.

Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi, 32, is said to have directed and urged others to attack U.S. and Israeli interests, and to kill Americans and Jews, in retaliation for the war against Iran.

He was identified as a senior figure in Kataeb Hezbollah, a U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Languages commissioner investigating Air Canada CEO’s English-only condolence video

The Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages said it's investigating a nearly English-only video where the CEO of Air Canada expressed his condolences to those affected by a deadly crash in March.

More than 2,400 complaints about Michael Rousseau's video message have been received by the federal language commissioner, spokesperson Sonia Lamontagne said in an email.

While she confirmed an investigation is now underway, she can't comment on the specific allegations or the nature of the investigation. Continue…

‘We’ve never seen a situation like this before’: Nurses says Ontario health-care system at breaking point

Every year, nurses, nurse practitioners and politicians gather for conversation over coffee and breakfast. This year’s “Breakfast with Politicians” was different.

“Morale is at an all-time low,” said Tracy Saldivia-Oda, a communications representative for the Ottawa region of the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario.

“It’s at the height of tension, and we’re in very serious disagreements. Hundreds of nurses in the Ottawa area were just laid off,” she said.

The tension she’s referring to is, in part, between registered nurses and the Ontario government, which continues to change funding for hospitals, resulting in workforce cuts.

In April, The Ottawa Hospital announced it would cut about 400 workers. Most of them would be nurses.

“If anyone says there are lots of nursing jobs in Ottawa — there are not,” Saldivia-Oda said. Continue…
