Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a plan to double Canada’s electricity grid by 2050, which he says will lower energy costs for 70 percent of Canadian households.
Carney announced his government’s new National Electricity Strategy, dubbed Powering Canada Strong, at a May 14 press conference on Parliament Hill. He said the grid expansion is estimated to generate up to $15 billion in energy savings, with seven in 10 households paying less for their total energy by 2050.
“Canada will double its electricity generation over the course of the next two decades, because the path to affordability is electrification, the path to competitiveness is electrification, the path to net-zero is electrification,” Carney said, adding that many goods such as cars, heaters, and factory machines, are switching to electric power.
He said the federal government will work with provinces, territories, indigenous peoples, and utilities unions over the next few months to identify how to execute the plan “most effectively and affordably.”
Carney noted doubling Canada’s electricity generation will require “massive investments,” with estimated costs at more than $1 trillion from now until 2050.
The plan is also expected to generate nearly 30,000 jobs by the end of 2028 and 100,000 more by 2050, Ottawa said. Continue…

Toronto researchers find gene associated with common autism behaviours

Researchers at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto have discovered a gene that influences the behaviours commonly linked to autism.
The study published in the May 13 issue of the science journal Nature, looked at genetic data from 9,349 people with autism and 8,332 without the condition.
This was a 15-year venture, Dr. Stephen Scherer, senior study author and chief of research at SickKids told National Post in an email.
“We were looking for something we thought might exist but did not know until we found it. We found a different kind of gene involved in a complex neurodevelopmental condition, which is a first. The fact we found it involved uniquely associated with the core features of autism (social behavioural and repetitive traits), and not learning and cognitive traits, may help explain all forms of autism.”
The newly pinpointed gene has been dubbed PTCHD1-AS. It was discovered using a “revolutionary technology called whole genome sequencing,” says Dr. Scherer. This technology allows analysis of all genes in the DNA, he adds. “Other lesser technologies would have missed this discovery.”
PTCHD1-AS may play a role in impaired social interaction and repetitive behaviours such as self-stimulating, according to the SickKids team.
“The fact we found genetic changes in a novel gene like this in autism surprised many people (including geneticists) and only now with the paper coming in the world’s top scientific journal will they believe it. Scientists around the world will now pivot their research to study these novel genetic pathways,” says Dr. Scherer.
He notes that his team is working “full-steam ahead” on PTCHS1-AS. “We see this as perhaps the best entry point into developing therapeutics.” Continue…

26 more people in Canada being contacted after 'low risk' exposure to confirmed hantavirus case

Twenty-six more Canadians who were on a flight with a confirmed case of hantavirus are now being contacted by public health officials but are considered to be at “low or minimal risk” of infection because of where they were seated, federal health officials said Thursday.
While the outbreak associated with the MV Hondius cruise ship is evolving, the risk to the general population in Canada remains low and “further spread of the virus within Canada is not expected,” Canada’s chief public health officer, Dr. Joss Reimer, said.
“But given the severity of the symptoms of the virus, we are taking a precautionary approach to ensure that Canadians are protected,” Reimer told reporters.
Some Canadians already isolating were travelling on a Saint Helena-Johannesburg-Amsterdam flight taken by a Dutch woman April 25 after her husband died while at sea.
When the ship docked in Saint Helena, the woman boarded the flight to Johannesburg, but was then taken off the connecting flight to Amsterdam when she started to show symptoms. She died the next day in hospital in South Africa. Dutch media have reported that passengers who sat in the same row as the woman or in the two rows in front and two rows behind her are considered high-risk contacts who should be in quarantine.
The 26 newly identified travellers were deemed by local European public health authorities as being “no risk,” Reimer said.
“Again, in Canada we are taking a precautionary approach, and we have deemed them to minimal or low risk as opposed to no risk,” she said.
The provinces and territories are contacting all 26 to make sure they’re aware that they were on the affected flight and what symptoms to watch for. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency is pointing its finger at the Port of Vancouver, alleging it to be an entry point for the chemicals used to manufacture fentanyl, which can then find its way into the U.S.
DEA Administrator Terrance Cole has stated publicly that the agency is “very conscious” of precursor chemicals moving through the port and warns that the DEA is “keeping (its) eye on Canada.”
Cole told U.S. senators in Washington on Tuesday that the chemicals are entering the port, before being transported to cartel-linked labs in Canada and ultimately crossing into the U.S. across the shared border, the CBC reports.
Cole made his comments during a Senate appropriations committee examining budget requests from the DEA, FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies.
He said the DEA will be expanding its Canadian presence, including plans for two more offices in 2027, though he didn’t identify Vancouver as one of them. At present, the DEA has two offices in Canada — in the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa and U.S. Consulate in Vancouver.

“Fair-minded Americans know senators should feel the pain of a shutdown with the American people,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy’s resolution suspends Senators’ pay during partial or full government shutdowns.
“It’s called shared sacrifice,” Kennedy said.
The Senators’ salaries will be held in an escrow account during a government shutdown, and once the shutdown is over, the lawmakers will get their money.

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Africa’s top public health body on Friday confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in Congo’s remote Ituri province, with 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths recorded so far.
The deaths and suspected cases have been recorded mainly in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement.
The Ebola virus is highly contagious and can be contracted through bodily fluids such as vomit, blood or semen. The disease it causes is rare, but severe and often fatal.
“Four deaths have been reported among laboratory-confirmed cases. Suspected cases have also been reported in Bunia, pending confirmation,” the agency said, referring to the capital of Ituri province, near the border with Uganda.
It said preliminary laboratory results had detected the Ebola virus in 13 of 20 samples. The results suggest a non-Ebola Zaire strain of the virus with sequencing ongoing to further characterize the strain, the agency said. The Ebola Zaire strain has been prominent in Congo’s past outbreaks.
The World Health Organization said last year that Congo has a stockpile of treatments and some 2,000 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine, However, the vaccine is effective against the Ebola Zaire strain of the virus, it said. Continue…

The cost-of-living crisis continues as Canadians struggle to make ends meet.
New insolvency data shows Canadian households are buckling under mounting debt pressure, with more than 37,000 people filing for insolvency in just the first three months of 2026.
According to figures from the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, 37,121 Canadians sought relief under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act between January and March of this year, working out to roughly 17 insolvency filings every hour.
The numbers mark the highest quarterly insolvency total since the fallout of the 2008 global financial crisis.
Consumer insolvencies were up 8.5 per cent compared to the same period last year, and climbed 6.5 per cent from the final quarter of 2025.
The financial strain is not limited to households. Another 1,232 Canadian businesses filed for insolvency during the same three-month period. While business insolvencies were slightly lower than a year ago, they rose nearly 10 per cent from the previous quarter, suggesting corporate financial pressure may also be intensifying. Continue…

Two residents of British Columbia, Canada have been charged in Washington state after federal authorities say they smuggled Vietnamese nationals into the United States through Point Roberts, a small US peninsula accessible by land only through Canada.
Van Phuong Vu, 28, of Vancouver, and Johnny Huynh, 36, of Burnaby, appeared in US District Court in Tacoma on charges of conspiracy to transport certain aliens for private financial gain.
Authorities said the scheme unfolded on May 5, 2026, when US Border Patrol was alerted to a group crossing from Canada into Point Roberts along the beach. Agents later located the suspected migrants at Bellingham Airport after they had allegedly flown from Point Roberts to the mainland US.
Agents first observed a group leaving the charter flight terminal with Huynh and heading toward a nearby hotel, where they were stopped. A second group, allegedly accompanied by Vu, was intercepted shortly after another flight arrived.
Federal authorities determined that eight Vietnamese nationals had entered the US without inspection. Some allegedly told law enforcement they had agreed to pay between $13,000 and $15,000 to be smuggled into the country.
According to prosecutors, some of the migrants had communicated with the smuggling group over social media and were told to pay the smuggling fees after reaching their final destinations, including New York and Tennessee.
Vu, a Vietnamese citizen and lawful permanent resident of Canada, and Huynh, a Canadian citizen, face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
“I commend the US Border Patrol for their quick and diligent work in this case,” said First Assistant US Attorney Neil Floyd. “An early morning alert of border crossing at the beach led to the apprehension of eight illegal aliens and charges against those who sought to profit from the smuggling event.”

The Canadian government is facing pushback to amend a bill that opponents say would allow the government to circumvent encryption in devices and platforms. Tech companies, including Apple, have threatened to pull out of Canada if the bill passes.
Bill C-22 was introduced in March, titled "An Act respecting lawful access." The bill aims to amend various laws "to modernize certain provisions respecting the timely gathering and production of data and information during an investigation." Companies, however, say that the bill would weaken encryption used on various platforms, exposing customers to risks such as hackers.
Apple, which uses encryption to protect customers’ data, said in a statement, "at a time of rising and pervasive threats from malicious actors seeking access to user information, Bill C-22, as drafted, would undermine our ability to offer the powerful privacy and security features users expect from Apple. This legislation could allow the Canadian government to force companies to break encryption by inserting backdoors into their products – something Apple will never do."
The statement added, "We will continue our longstanding cooperation with governments to help protect public safety while also advocating tirelessly against any measures that would put users’ personal data at risk."
Signal, the encrypted messaging app, has said that it would pull out of Canada if the bill is passed. Signal vice-president of strategy and global affairs Udbhav Tiwari said the company "would rather pull out of the country than be compelled to compromise on the privacy promises we have made to our users." He added, "Bill C-22 could potentially allow hackers to exploit these very vulnerabilities engineered into electronic systems, with private messaging services serving as an ideal target for foreign adversaries."
“End-to-end encryption is incompatible with exceptional access, no matter how creative the route taken to achieve it,” Tiwari said. “Provisions that enable the deliberate engineering of vulnerabilities into critical infrastructure like Signal are a grave threat to privacy everywhere.”
Windscribe, a Canadian-based VPN service, said in response to Signal’s warning, "We won't be far behind if C-22 passes. In its current state, VPNs would almost certainly require us to log identifying user data. Signal isn't headquartered in Canada so they can just shut off Canadian servers, but our HQ is. We pay an ungodly amount of taxes to this corrupt government, and in return they want to destroy the entire essence of our service to basically spy on its own citizens. Not happening. We'll move HQ and take our taxes elsewhere."
Tobi Lutke, the CEO of Shopify, wrote, "C-22 is looking like a huge mistake. It worries me a great deal. There is so much nonsense in there that It may well end up dealing a death blow to Canadian tech viability." He added in a separate post, "C-22 must be scrapped."

Calgary police have laid charges against five men following what investigators describe as a violent, coordinated kidnapping tied to an ongoing extortion series targeting members of the South Asian community, marking what officers say is a significant escalation in the pattern of attacks.
The investigation by the Calgary Police Service Organized Crime & Offender Management Section centres on an incident that began on May 6, when a man was allegedly abducted from a residence in Edmonton by four suspects before being transported to Calgary under threat.
Police say the victim was assaulted, threatened with a firearm, and forced into a vehicle during the initial abduction between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
He was later driven to a home in Calgary’s Cityscape neighbourhood, where investigators allege additional suspects and vehicles were waiting as part of a coordinated extortion attempt targeting the victim’s associate.
According to police, the suspects tried to compel the victim to lure his friend outside the residence so he could be targeted in the extortion scheme.
When he refused, he was assaulted again.
While the suspects remained outside the home, the intended target and his wife attempted to leave but were allegedly followed and threatened with a firearm, forcing them back inside where they contacted police.
Shortly after, officers conducted a traffic stop near Metis Tr. and 104 Ave.N.E., arresting two men believed to be involved in the Cityscape incident.
Police said the initial Edmonton kidnapping had not yet been reported at that time.
The suspects later transported the victim back to Edmonton, where he was released near his residence early the following morning. The victim then contacted police to report the kidnapping.
On May 12, with assistance from the CPS Tactical Team, investigators located and arrested two additional suspects during a traffic stop in the 600 block of Martindale Blvd. N.E.
Police also seized a privately manufactured firearm during the investigation.
In total, four men have been charged and a fifth suspect is wanted on warrants. Police say additional individuals may still be involved and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Charged are Taranveer Singh, 24, and Daksh Gautam, 25, Akashdeep Singh, 18, and Pardeep Singh, 24, all of Calgary.
The charges include kidnapping with a firearm, pointing a firearm, unlawful confinement, assault with a weapon, and assault, among other offences.
Court appearances are scheduled between May and June.
Gagandeep Singh, 29, is currently wanted on warrants for multiple firearms-related kidnapping and assault charges.
Police say he has tattoos of a woman on his right forearm and a blue and red eagle on his left forearm and is known to have ties to Calgary, Ontario and BC.
“This is a significant escalation in violence in the extortion incidents that we have seen in Calgary so far,” said Supt. Jeff Bell of the CPS Criminal Operations & Intelligence Division.
He said coordination with policing partners across jurisdictions helped accelerate arrests.
Since April 2025, Calgary has seen 45 extortion-related incidents in the South Asian community, including 19 involving shootings at homes, businesses or vehicles. Police say 11 people have been charged so far in connection with the broader series.

Sukhwinder Sidhu had been driving for 16 hours when he crashed into the car of figure skater Alexandra Paul, killing her and injuring four others including her 10-month-old son, whose leg was broken.
Sidhu pleaded guilty in February to dangerous driving, causing the crash on Aug. 22, 2023, at a construction zone in the rural township of Melancthon, just north of Toronto.

U.S. Under Secretary of State Sarah Rogers has again spoken out on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in Canada, this time commenting on a tribunal ruling that found views opposing “systemic racism” theories are not grounded in political or legal principles.
The decision involves a Simon Fraser University political science professor who was denied a job because he did not support DEI.
The B.C. human rights tribunal decided against holding a hearing on the issue last month. Adjudicator Devyn Cousineau said in her April 15 ruling that the educator had no reasonable likelihood of proving that he was denied the position because of his political views, because opposition to DEI did not constitute a political stance under the law.
Rogers posted a portion of the tribunal’s decision on social media to accompany her comments on the case.
“The court’s reasoning here is that if you reject ‘systemic racism’ theories, and resulting DEI prescriptions, your views bear no apparent relation to politics or law,” she said in a May 13 post. “Thus, those views are unprotected in Canada.”
Rogers last year also criticized a report by UK-based Global Disinformation Index (GDI), which labelled “digital denialism” of Canadian residential schools as an example of “hate speech” that harms democracy. Continue…

Mexican cartels do not have a “significant” presence in synthetic drug production in Canada, the RCMP said in reaction to concerns among top U.S. law enforcement officials that the cartels are moving operations to Canada to produce and distribute fentanyl.
Available intelligence indicates Mexican cartels “do not have a significant or controlling presence in Canada’s synthetic drug production landscape,” an RCMP spokesperson told The Epoch Times.
“We recognize that our U.S. counterparts are taking significant steps to disrupt serious and organized crime operations, including cartels, in several countries, and we are committed to continuing to work with them to that end; thereby safeguarding the citizens of both our countries,” a spokesperson for the RCMP said in a May 14 emailed statement.
“Organized crime groups seek to increase profit however possible, and new trends continue to emerge as long as demand exists. Our shared goal is ensuring that these organized crime groups do not expand their operations and gain a foothold within Canada.”
The remarks come after Terry Cole, head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and FBI Director Kash Patel told a U.S. Senate Committee on May 12 of their organizations’ efforts to disrupt new drug production facilities in Canada, in addition to working to prevent source countries like China and India from shipping narcotics ingredients to North America. The United States has charged 13 people for trafficking firearms from New Hampshire into Canada in a law enforcement operation that traced guns to Canadian crime scenes.
“This tracking network allegedly exploited border geography and reservation corridors to move firearms into Canada while attempting to avoid law enforcement detection,” said U.S. Attorney for New Hampshire Erin Creegan at a news conference in Concord, N.H. on Thursday.
Court documents said members of the Akwesasne reservation in New York travelled to Vermont, where they enlisted Justin Jackson to purchase firearms on their behalf.
The documents allege that since Jackson was prohibited from purchasing firearms, he got Melissa Longe, Dustin Tuttle, Caleb Wilcott and Doug Mulligan to buy guns from licensed dealers in New Hampshire—a scheme known as “straw” purchasing.
“The allegations paint a troubling picture of how straw purchasing fuels violent criminal networks across the northeast and into Canada,” Creegan said.

American officials say a man from India has pleaded guilty to his role in smuggling Indian migrants into the United States from Canada.
The U.S. Justice Department says in a news release that Shivam Lnu was charged earlier this year with smuggling a dozen people across the border.
It says that according to court documents, Lnu directed operations beginning from at least October 2024 to June 2025 to smuggle people into New York state.
The Justice Department says his role was to co-ordinate drivers to pick up migrants and take them to stash houses around northern New York and to hotels in Plattsburgh, about 100 kilometres south of Montreal.
It says that in January 2025, U.S. Border Patrol found a total of 12 migrants in two vehicles that tried to flee from agents.
Justice officials say the 22-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit alien smuggling and three counts of alien smuggling for financial gain, and faces up to 15 years in prison.
He is set to be sentenced Sept. 4.

The Supreme Court of Canada has recognized intimate partner violence as a distinct legal basis for pursuing civil damages.
The top court’s ruling today comes in the case of a woman who suffered years of physical and emotional abuse by her husband during a 16-year marriage.
The court says intimate partner violence is a pernicious social ill deserving the full attention of the law.
It says the existing torts of assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress fail to remedy the specific wrong to dignity, autonomy and equality that intimate partner violence creates.
The judgment says this form of violence is not limited to physical or psychological abuse, but includes all abusive behaviour by one intimate partner to coerce and control the other, effectively depriving them of their autonomy.
It says this could involve egregious acts of physical and psychological violence, as well as tactics of isolation, manipulation, humiliation, surveillance, economic abuse, sexual coercion and intimidation.

Plans to expand Canada’s first liquified natural gas export terminal moved ahead on May 14 as Ottawa, British Columbia, and company LNG Canada announced an agreement on enhanced investment cooperation.
B.C. Premier David Eby, Energy Minister Tim Hodgson, and LNG Canada president Chris Cooper made the announcement from Vancouver.
Stakeholders now expect the company could make a final investment decision by the end of the year.
LNG Canada Phase 2 was referred to the federal Major Projects Office for steering last year. Phase 1 of the project, in Kitimat, B.C., came online in summer 2025 and exported Canada’s first shipments of liquified natural gas (LNG).
LNG Canada is a joint venture between multinationals Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Korea Gas.
The agreement on enhanced investment cooperation between the governments and LNG Canada was reached after the joint venture partners approved hundreds of millions of dollars in incremental funding for different phases of the project as it works toward a final investment decision. Continue…

Manitoba Teen Charged With Conspiracy to Commit Murder in Alleged School Attack Plot

Manitoba RCMP have filed conspiracy to commit murder charges against a 14-year-old boy who was previously accused by police of plotting an attack at his school in March.
The teen was originally arrested on March 16 by Manitoba RCMP and charged with uttering threats to harm students at Rivers Collegiate, a rural Grade 7 to 12 school in Rivers, Man. Investigators with RCMP Major Crime Services re-arrested the youth on May 13 while he was in custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
The youth is now facing several new charges including conspiracy to commit murder and counselling the offence of murder, according to an RCMP press release. He has also been charged with two counts of uttering threats.
The new charges were laid after further investigation into the original incident, the RCMP said in its May 14 press release. Continue…
