Hantavirus

In 1978, the etiologic agent of Korean Hemerologic fever was isolated from small infected field rodent Apodemus agrarius near Hantan river in South Korea. The virus was named as Hantaan virus, after the name of the river Hantan. This initial discovery dates back to scientific approaches that were initiated after the Korean war (1951-1953), during which more than 3000 cases of Korean hemorrhagic fever were reported among UN troops. In 1981, Hantaan virus strain 76-118, isolated from Apodemus agrarius was grown in A549 cell line, and its electron microscopic images revealed that the virus was a new member of the Bunyaviridae family. It was observed that hantaviruses unlike other members of this family do not have an arthropod vector, and exclusively establish a persistent infection in the population of their specific rodent hosts. In 1981, a new genus termed as “hantavirus” was introduced in the Bunyaviridae family, which included the viruses that cause hemoroligic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) (Fig1). It was initially thought that pathogenic hantaviruses are restricted to old word. Until 1993, the only native hantavirus found in new word was non pathogenic Prospect Hill virus (PHV). This myth ended after the hantavirus outbreak in the four corner region of Southwestern United States that caused serious respiratory distress in infected patients and lead to the discovery of a new hantavirus disease called hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HPS). An examination of frozen stored samples of lung tissue from people who had died of unexplained lung disease in the past revealed that HPS is an old disease with conformed cases dating to at least 1959. Within a very short period the virus causing HPS was isolated from common dear mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus, Fig 1) and was later named as Sin Nombre virus (SNV). Later on, it became clear that other hantaviruses similar to SNV, such as Andes virus (ANDV), are present through out the united states. Currently, the hantavirus genus includes more than twenty one species and more than 30 genotypes (Table 1).

Hantaviruses have coevolved for millions of years with their rodent and insectivore reservoirs. Rodent reservoirs include both Cricetidae rodents (subfamilies Arvicolinae, Neotominae and Sigmodontinae) and Muridae rodents (subfamily Murinae). Cricetidae rodents include voles, lemmings of the northern hemisphere and new world mice and rats. Muridae rodents include old world mice and rats (Fig 2). Hantavirus phylogeny follows closely that of their rodent hosts, suggesting long term co-evolution, although there are evidences of occasional host switches in the past. The phylogenetic tree suggests that co-speciation of hantavirus with their host animals of four different rodent subfamilies appears to influence their ability to cause a specific clinical manifestation in humans. For example, a majority of viruses in Neotominae and Sigmodontinae subfamilies are known to cause severe HPS with high mortality rate (40-50%). These viruses are distributed throughout North and South America in different rodent species of New World Neotominae and Sigmodontinae rodents. Old world hantaviruses that have co-evolved with Murinae rodents cause severe HFRS that primarily affects kidney function with a mortality of 0-15%. Although the disease caused by Murinae viruses has less mortality rate, it still poses a significant threat to human health due to severity of the disease and the ability of the viruses to cause large scale epidemics. Among Arvicolinae-borne hataviruses, only puumala virus (PUUV) causes a mild form of human disease often referred as nephropathi epidemia with a mortality rate of less than 1%. Interestingly, most other members of this subfamily are non-pathogenic to humans. Until recently, the only exception that did not have a confirmed rodent connection is Thottapalayam virus (TPMV), which was isolated from an Asian house shrew or musk shrew (Suncus murinus) captured in 1964 during a survey for Japanese encephalitis virus in southern India (4).

More than half a million illegal migrants have massed in north Africa readying to flood into Europe, the Greek Government has warned.

The country's Migration Minister, Thanos Plevris, sounded the alarm this week, revealing that Greek authorities believe around 550,000 migrants are in Libya alone awaiting the opportunity to break into the continent.

Mr Plevris said his country was working alongside Libya and the EU's Frontex border force to prevent the boats from setting sail across the Mediterranean.

He told Greek media outlet Voria: “Those who are not entitled to asylum will be detained.

“Now, when it is likely that someone will not get asylum, they are not placed in a freedom status but in a detention status, so that with the rejection of asylum, they can be returned.”

The minister declared “there is no reason for Greece to open its borders and accept people”, adding that the country will "operate within the legal framework, but will also reach its limits in order to protect the borders".

Since 2015, Greece has been a major gateway for over 1.2 million illegal migrants flooding into Europe - with many going on to make their way into Britain.

Greece's Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has implemented a host of policies in recent years aimed at tackling the country's migrant crisis.

Athens erected a 25-mile wall along its coastline to block migrants flooding in from Turkey.

Th Greek Government has made it a specific criminal offence to enter the country illegally, with penalties of up to two years in prison and a fine of up to €10,000 (£8,655).

The law also applies to migrants who have overstayed their visas or refuse to leave Greece once their asylum claims are rejected.

Once applications are turned down, migrants can be ankle-monitored and are given two weeks to leave the country or face up to five years in prison.

After the legislation was implemented last year, Mr Plevris said: “We are accountable to Greek citizens, and Greek citizens want to be protected.

"The message is clear [for migrants]: if your asylum request is rejected, you have two choices.

"Either you go to jail or return to your homeland. The Greek state does not accept you… You are not welcome.”

Almost 940,000 prospective migrants are believed to have been living in Libya at the end of 2025, according to the United Nations’ International Organisation for Migration.

The majority live in the cities of Tripoli and Benghazi, with most believed to be from Chad, Egypt, Niger, Nigeria, and Sudan.

The warning from Greece comes as Britain's own crisis hit a damning milestone, with the number of illegal migrants breaking into the country via small boat since 2018 now surpassing 200,000.

The grim tally was reached on Friday morning after a group of 70 migrants were taken to the Border Force processing centre at Dover.

The group had been on a dinghy that launched from a beach near Dunkirk just before 7.30am.

Texas banning state-funded "Muslims Only" events

Texas Republicans are intensifying efforts to counter what they call security and cultural risks from the state’s growing Muslim population, moves that dovetail Trump’s America First priorities on immigration vetting and assimilation.

Gov. Greg Abbott moved Tuesday to block a planned Eid al-Adha celebration at the taxpayer-funded Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark in Grand Prairie. He threatened to withhold $530,000 in state public-safety grants unless the city canceled the event, which was initially advertised as open to “Muslims only.” City officials quickly scrapped it after revising the policy to require “modest dress only” and open access.

The action fits a broader pattern in the Lone Star State. Abbott has signed legislation banning “Sharia compounds” and backed Attorney General Ken Paxton’s investigations into the proposed East Plano Islamic Center residential development, which critics argue could create isolated enclaves.

Republican lawmakers have formed “Sharia-Free” caucuses, targeted the Council on American-Islamic Relations and seen strong primary-voter support — 95% in a non-binding poll — for measures to bar Sharia law in Texas courts.

Also on the Federal level, Texas Rep. Chip Roy and other GOP leaders have supported the push as essential to national security and preserving American values.

The state-level initiatives and coordination with Trump reinforce goals of preventing parallel societies, protecting public resources and ensuring cultural compatibility, without waiting for Washington. In Oklahoma, state lawmakers, including Sen. David Bullard, advanced a constitutional amendment to bar courts and municipalities from applying any foreign or religious law undermining the U.S. or state constitutions. This follows the Broken Arrow City Council’s January 2026 denial of a rezoning request for a new mosque amid public concerns over infrastructure, compatibility, and broader Sharia-related issues; Attorney General Gentner Drummond launched an investigation. GOP gubernatorial candidates have highlighted radical Islam and Sharia threats in campaigns.

Additionally, Missouri lawmakers debated bills barring the application of foreign and religious laws in courts. Arkansas saw similar resolutions. These build on a decade-long trend (with states like Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina, and South Dakota having adopted earlier anti-foreign law measures) but gained fresh energy in 2025–2026 legislative sessions tied to Trump momentum and midterm priorities.

Hong Kong helped bankroll Iran’s terror network, bombshell report claims

Hong Kong has become a critical financial and logistical lifeline for Iran’s regime — helping move illicit oil, weapons technology and surveillance tools that fuel Tehran’s military machine and domestic repression, according to a bombshell report set for release Monday.

The 26-page report by the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation, titled “Oil, Arms, and Cash: How Hong Kong Fuels the Iranian Regime,” alleges that dozens of Hong Kong-based companies have helped Iran evade Western sanctions while funneling billions of dollars into the hands of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its terror proxies.

“Simply put, without Hong Kong’s help, Iran would not have the money and the missiles that make it so dangerous,” the report states.

“The evidence is consistent and damning,” the report says, citing “Hong Kong’s easy registration of shell companies, its globally connected banking sector, its secretive corporate services infrastructure, and the indifference of its government to Western law enforcement cooperation.”

The report details how Hong Kong-linked firms allegedly facilitated the shipment of Iranian crude oil to China through shadow fleets using deceptive ship-to-ship transfers and falsified cargo documents.

Since 2020, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has designated at least 95 Hong Kong-incorporated entities for Iran-related sanctions violations, according to an appendix included in the report.

Among the cases cited was Hong Kong-based Petronix Energy Trading Ltd., which US authorities accused in February 2025 of purchasing “hundreds of thousands of metric tons of Iranian crude oil” for shipment to China.

The report also alleges Hong Kong has become a major hub for funneling Western-made electronics and drone components into Iran’s weapons programs.

Investigators cited battlefield forensic evidence allegedly linking Hong Kong transshipment networks to components recovered from Iranian Shahed drones used in attacks in Ukraine and the Middle East.

“Taken together, these forensic findings establish that the connection between Hong Kong-based trading companies and Iranian weapons systems runs deep,” the report states.

The authors also accused Chinese telecom giant Huawei of using its Hong Kong-registered subsidiary Skycom Tech to help supply Iran with surveillance technology later used to “monitor, identify and detain protesters,” citing allegations previously made by the US Department of Justice.

The report also points to HSBC’s long history of alleged Iran sanctions violations.

It notes that the London-based bank — whose largest operations are in Hong Kong — entered a deferred prosecution agreement with the DOJ in 2012 and agreed to pay roughly $1.9 billion in penalties tied in part to Iran sanctions evasion.

According to the report, HSBC admitted facilitating the transfer of 32,000 ounces of gold bullion “for the ultimate benefit of a bank owned or controlled by the Government of Iran.”

“HSBC operates a robust program to prevent the bank being used to facilitate financial crime,” a rep for the bank told The Post in a statement.

“We are committed to complying with the laws and regulations in the jurisdictions where we operate.”

Hong Kong authorities pushed back on the allegations.

“The HKSAR Government has been enforcing the sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council fully and vigorously to fulfil our international obligations,” a government spokesperson told The Post.

The spokesperson added that Hong Kong does “not implement unilateral sanctions imposed by other countries” and said authorities maintain “an effective and robust mechanism” to inspect suspicious companies and vessels tied to sanctions evasion.

Still, the report blasts Hong Kong authorities for openly refusing to cooperate with Western sanctions enforcement.

“The case for more effective action is overwhelming,” the report concludes.

“What is required is not new legal authority. It is the political will to use authority that already exists.”

The Post has sought comment from Huawei. Reps for Petronix and Skycom Tech could not be reached for comment.

HHS through @ASPRgov and @CDCgov is supporting @StateDept in the repatriation of 17 American citizens from the MV Hondius cruise ship affected by the Andes variant of hantavirus.

All 17 are currently en route via @StateDept

airlift to the United States, with two of the passengers travelling in the plane's biocontainment units out of an abundance of caution. One passenger currently has mild symptoms and another passenger tested mildly PCR positive for the Andes virus.

As of now, the airlift will transport passengers to the ASPR Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Center (RESPTC) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska before taking the passenger with mild symptoms to a second RESPTC at its final destination.

Upon arrival at each facility, each individual will undergo clinical assessment and receive appropriate care and support based on their condition.
