Shippers Hapag-Lloyd, CMA CGM Suspend Cuba Bookings After US Executive Order

PARIS/FRANKFURT/HAVANA, May 17 (Reuters) – Shipping giants CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd HLAG.DE said on Sunday they had suspended all bookings to and from Cuba until further notice, with both citing a U.S. executive order issued on May 1, in the latest blow to the crisis-wracked island’s economy.

The temporary suspension of new orders by two of the world’s largest shipping companies could jeopardize as much as 60% of Cuba’s shipping traffic by volume, two sources with direct knowledge of the situation said – a fresh hit to a country already nearing collapse amid a U.S. oil blockade that has throttled the island’s fuel supply.

“Following the U.S. Executive Order issued on May 1, CMA CGM has decided to suspend its bookings to or from Cuba until further notice,” the Frenchcompany said in an emailed statement. It added it was “closely monitoring the situation” and would adapt its operations in compliance with applicable regulations.

A Hapag-Lloyd spokesman said the German company was similarly suspending Cuban orders “due to compliance risks associated with the U.S. president’s executive order of May 1.”

The Cuban government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Trump executive order on May 1 broadened existing U.S. sanctions on commerce with Cuba to include “any foreign person” operating in the “energy, defense and related materiel, metals and mining, financial services, or security sector of the Cuban economy, or any other sector of the Cuban economy.”

Shipping of goods from China would be most impacted, the sources said. Northern Europe and the Mediterranean would also be severely impacted, the sources added, though all global shipping to Cuba would be affected.

One key consideration in the suspensions, the sources said, was rooting out any shipping to or from the communist-run island and linked to Gaesa, a sprawling business conglomerate tied to Cuba’s military that has been heavily sanctioned by the United States.

The same U.S. executive order earlier this month prompted Canadian miner Sherritt Internationals to to pull out of its nickel and cobalt mining operations in Cuba after decades of investment.

The shippers’ decision, first reported by online media outlet CiberCuba, would be devastating for Cuban imports critical to keeping shelves stocked with provisions in a country already racked by shortages and rationing.

The sources said several options were on the table for Hapag-Lloyd and CMA CGM. The shippers could decide to permanently halt shipping to Cuba, or, alternatively, they could strike a deal with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump in which they are allowed to continue to ship only to Cuba’s private sector.

The latter option, the sources said, would keep with the Trump administration’s strategy to give private business in Cuba a leg up over the state sector.

I read Spencer Pratt's book so that I could write an article about him. I thought his book was highly unusual because he did not mention that his grandfatherWilliam Chauncey Pratt Jr.,

was a wildly successful businessman who in 1981, founded Kelley-Clarke, Inc., and served as its CEO for decades as it grew into the largest food brokerage and distributor in the Western United States.

In his book, all that Spencer Pratt mentioned about his grandfather was that he served in the Navy during WWII, boxed at UCLA, and was "frugal." Yet Spencer wrote at length about his maternal grandparents. Spencer wrote at length about all of the wealthy people around him and their successes. He name dropped just about everyone famous he knows (or at least has some tenuous connection to. But only a few lines about William C. Pratt Jr.

In the book, Spencer Pratt leads readers to believe that his father William C. Pratt III, got wealthy from being a dentist, who sometime around 1981, noticed that the gold market was surging, and bought up dental gold alloys that were undervalued. In turn, Spencer tells us, his dad would hawk the dental gold to buyers in the Jewelry District.

That's fine and all, but it's difficult to believe that Spencer's father could afford to buy a home in the Palisades, and send three kids to Crossroads Santa Monica, from Kindergarten through 12th grade. After I did some research, I found that grandfather Pratt had established a children's family trust for his children, including Spencer's dad William the Third. Granddaddy Pratt died in 2005. By 2007, Spencer's dad created KSS Children's Family Trust of 2007 which has held at least four properties that I am aware of so far (including two apartment complexes in Santa Monica) and the luxury $6 million dollar beachfront mansion Spencer and Heidi currently reside at in Montecito. Spencer is a trustee of the trust. KSS = Kristen, Spencer, and Stephanie.

I was not able to find a whole lot of information about Kelley-Clarke, Inc. except that it was acquired Acosta Group.

I researched the question: who are the people behind Spencer Pratt? I found both Spencer and Heidi are managed by Kyle Thomas of Octagon Entertainment, a subsidiary of Omnicom. IYKYK. This brings us into BlackRock territory.

Omnicom is the world’s largest advertisement agency network. It is largest buyer of commercial ad space across the world. Its power is unparalleled. Omnicom buys ad space for its thousands of subsidiary agencies and their clients. They employ about 120,000 employees.

When Trump returned to the White House, his FTC allowed Omnicom Group, Inc. to acquire The Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc. (IPG) for $13.5 billion. The acquisition raised concerns of antitrust and that Omnicom combined with IPG would dominate the industry given that they were two of the so-called “Big Six” global advertising holding companies. Omnicom and IPG had the third and fourth largest share of the market for media buying services in the U.S. The acquisition instantly made Omnicom the largest and substantially lessened competition. Today, the market is controlled by five major players. One major concern is advertisers using their resources to essentially censor certain programming without transparency.

How often do you think Rogan turns down requests when WME wants him to interview one of their other assets? That’s synergy. Rogan is just an advertising vehicle.

Do you ever wonder why you see the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighters all the time surrounding WME’s other assets? Why Donald Trump is hosting one of UFC’s violent matches at the White House this summer?

Just turn to WME’s president Mark Shapiro, who is also the president of TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of UFC and WWE.

These agents and their entities control and dominate the ad space, content creators, the narrative, so much that it is easy to drown out the opposition. Does it make for a fair mayoral race? Absolutely not.

They attempt to drown you in fantasies they have created about Spencer Pratt. They want you to believe he is a community activist.

The Maryland State Board of Elections is resending thousands of mail-in ballots to voters ahead of next month's primary election, after some received an incorrect ballot.

The SBE announced the error on Friday. Officials said the mix-up was caused by the ballot vendor, and resulted in some voters getting the ballot for the wrong party.

While officials don't know exactly how many people received an improper ballot, the error only affected people who requested a ballot before Thursday, May 14. Regardless, the SBE is sending ballots back out to all voters to maintain "the integrity and security of mail-in voting," officials said.

Voters who requested to print their mail-in ballot out at home will not be affected.

The SBE is notifying everyone who will be receiving a new mail-in ballot.

Maryland State Administrator of Elections Jared Demarinis said his office is working to fix the error.

"With over 500,000 voters requesting mail-in ballots, we want to eliminate any doubt in its integrity or accuracy," DeMarinis said.

Maryland's primary election is on June 23.
