When the FBI raided the home of Oakland mayor Sheng Thao, the offices of California Waste Solutions, and the homes of California Waste Solutions’ owners Andy Duong and his parents, David and Linda Duong in June 2024, Andy Duong’s Instagram account featured numerous photos of him with Rob and Mia Bonta. Duong even jetted off to the Philippines with Rob, whom he calls “his brother” in one particularly cringy image of him huddled with the Bontas in a limousine. In addition to Warriors games, trips to exotic lands, and limo rides, Duong shoveled cash to the current attorney general from his family’s businesses and their associates throughout his political career. Those associates, it turns out, are woven in a tangled web of pay-to-play politics, attempted murders, human trafficking, drugs, and warnings of a compromising video tied to Rob Bonta.

Not only are the Bontas tied to Andy Duong, but they’re also associated with a failed fuel company run by Mario Juarez, a longtime Oakland political operative who served on the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee and helped allies like Bonta maintain power on party committees. He and Rob Bonta were described in court filings as “close political allies” who “befriended politically powerful and resourced people.” Juarez donated modestly to Bonta (around $500 in 2016, plus more from associates), and later served as Bonta’s alternate on the committee, making calls on his behalf in 2021 and 2022.

Juarez was attacked in two separate incidents in May and June 2024, including once at 1211 Embarcadero, the address where FBI and IRS agents raided the offices of California Waste Solutions on June 20. That attack happened about a month before Juarez was shot at four times outside his home in the 1800 block of Fruitvale Avenue. Juarez turned FBI informant (known as “Co-Conspirator 1” in the case against Thao and the Duongs), likely not only fearing for his life but potential jail time for his own misdeeds.

Opponents of Bonta’s investigative journalism chill pill argue the bill would punish journalists who expose wrongdoing in taxpayer-funded programs and allow removal of publicly recorded videos.

Over the past several decades Juarez ran shady companies that are no longer in operation. Two former business partners told CBS Bay Area that in 2012 Juarez stiffed them for $230,000 they invested in his ventures — including a proposed fuel plant called Viridis. County records show regulators have filed nearly $100,000 worth of state and federal tax liens against Juarez since 2015. Yet, just one year later, then-Assemblyman Rob Bonta asked the California Energy Commission to award a $3.4 million grant to Viridis, where Juarez was the president and donated to Bonta’s reelection campaign.

In 2021, Mia Bonta ran for her husband’s former seat as a member of the California State Assembly from the 18th district and won. Her campaign office was located at 1241 High Street in Oakland — which also happens to be the address of Viridis Fuels. As of Oct. 25, 2019, Trademarkia listed the company as “dead/cancelled,” but in 2014, Viridis president Juarez sent a letter from the 1241 High Street address to Kristina Duong of California Waste Solutions. “Viridis Fuels is pleased to acknowledge our proposed support of California Waste Solutions’ expansion and operations. We appreciate the opportunity to work with your team as your reputation is exemplary,” Juarez writes, going on to describe a partnership that will include use of a six-acre parcel in the North Gateway Area of the former Army Base. California’s involvement in Viridis grew from that $3.4 million grant pushed by Rob Bonta to $38 million in bond financing.

Fourth Malaysia-linked ship transits Strait of Hormuz, shipping data shows

A support vessel owned by Malaysian firm Vantris Energy, formerly known as Sapura Energy, passed through the Strait of Hormuz, LSEG shipping data showed on Friday, becoming the fourth ship linked to the country to transit the waterway since the outbreak of the US-Iran war.

The Sapura 1200 was among seven ships that the Malaysian government had sought permission from Iran to clear the strait, which has been mostly closed off since the conflict broke out in late February, disrupting global energy supplies, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The ship made its way through the strait, hewing close to the Iranian coastline, before heading for Oman and entering Muscat port, LSEG data showed.

Palestinians mark 78 years since the Nakba on Friday – one of the largest refugee crises in modern history – as expanding Israeli settlements and military operations are again forcing communities from their homes, RT’s Charlotte Dubenskij reports.

The Nakba, or ‘catastrophe’, was triggered by the mass displacement of Palestinians during the creation of Israel in 1948. A 1947 UN partition plan, adopted with backing from the Soviet Union, called for the creation of separate Jewish and Arab states, but only Israel was established.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, rooted in competing territorial claims, has fueled decades of unrest and wars in the Middle East.

Activists and local residents told RT that pressure on Palestinians is intensifying across areas under Israeli control.

The UN says around 40,000 Palestinians have been displaced in the West Bank since early 2025 amid intensified Israeli military operations, demolitions, and settler violence.

Members of Bedouin communities interviewed by RT described repeated attempts to force them from their land.

“When we first came here, they told us this was Area B, Palestinian land. But then they turned around and told us, no, you are not allowed to stay here either,” one resident said. “Every single day, they come after us trying to force us out.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that prospects for the creation of a Palestinian state were being systematically undermined.

Fires is second, starting with connecting systems the Army already has and fielding capabilities that have been demonstrated for years, including automated target recognition and call-for-fire algorithms, according to Gibbs.

“Those technologies are mature,” he said, “they’re just cross-cutting. No one owns them. We’re saying we own those spaces.”

Third is sustainment, especially resupply at echelon and casualty evacuation (CASEVAC).

Gibbs pointed to multiple ongoing efforts, including the Autonomous Transport Vehicle System program and demonstrations of autonomous ship-to-shore resupply using unmanned surface vessels and ground robots.

In contested areas, he said, the Army can no longer assume it will always be able to move people and supplies the way it did in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“If you move exposed, you’re going to be targeted,” Gibbs said. For CASEVAC, he added that unmanned systems may not be the preferred answer, but the Army needs options when helicopters or other traditional assets cannot safely reach wounded soldiers.

Other mission areas will follow. Gibbs said launched effects are not in his portfolio, but CPE Mission Autonomy will help enable them. Counter-UAS and electronic warfare are also supporting efforts because “a lot of that mission can and should be done with unmanned and autonomous systems.”

Maneuver-related tasks such as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, as well as overwatch and maintaining contact with manned formations are still in the science-and-technology phase but could move to a higher priority later, he said.

A key enabler will be open architecture, and Gibbs prompted industry to build to open APIs and avoid proprietary interfaces, especially for counter-UAS, electronic warfare, and weapon payloads.

Ultimately, CPE Mission Autonomy will develop a reference architecture that lets the Army onboard new platforms, payloads, and enabling technologies “in a matter of weeks or even days,” rather than months or years.

Iran Says It Has "No Trust" In US, Insists There Is "No Military Solution"

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Friday that Tehran has "no trust" in the United States and remains interested in negotiations only if Washington demonstrates seriousness, as talks aimed at ending the war remain stalled. Speaking to Indian media during the second day of the BRICS foreign ministers meeting in New Delhi, Araghchi said military initiatives are ineffective in resolving regional crises, Turkey Today reported.

“There is no military solution, and the U.S. must understand this reality,” Araghchi said, according to a statement shared by Iran’s Foreign Ministry. “They cannot achieve their goals through military action, but the situation would be different if they pursue diplomacy,” he added.

Araghchi also said the United States and Israel had “tested” Iran at least twice during the conflict.

The Iranian foreign minister said one of the main obstacles during negotiations with Washington has been inconsistent messaging from American officials. Araghchi said contradictory statements, interviews and communications from U.S. officials created deep mistrust between the two sides.

Iran has repeatedly accused Washington of pursuing diplomacy publicly while supporting military pressure against Tehran behind the scenes.

Regional tensions escalated after the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, triggering retaliatory attacks by Tehran against Israel and U.S. allies in the Gulf region.

Although a prolonged ceasefire is currently in effect, negotiations aimed at reaching a permanent settlement have largely stalled.

Commenting on the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi said Iran continues to allow passage for “friendly countries” while imposing restrictions on what he described as “enemy ships.”

“The Strait of Hormuz is not closed to friendly countries. Restrictions are for enemy ships,” he said, although it is unclear why Iran then claims Chinese ships had been blocked until yesterday since China remains Iran's largest, if not only, oil export client.

“In recent days, many vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz with the assistance of our naval forces, and this process will continue,” he added.

Araghchi said ships belonging to friendly states and other commercial vessels must coordinate with Iranian armed forces while transiting the strategic waterway.

“The only solution is the complete end of the aggressive war, and afterward we will guarantee the safe passage of every ship,” he said.

He also reiterated Tehran’s position that Iran acted within its right to self-defense following the outbreak of the conflict.
