Mystic Mountain Monster being Destroyed

Inside the head of this interstellar monster is a star that is slowly destroying it. The huge monster, actually an inanimate series of pillars of gas and dust, measures light years in length. The in-head star is not itself visible through the opaque interstellar dust but is bursting out partly by ejecting opposing beams of energetic particles called Herbig-Haro jets. Located about 7,500 light years away in the Carina Nebula and known informally as Mystic Mountain, the appearance of these pillars is dominated by dark dust even though they are composed mostly of clear hydrogen gas. The featured image was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. All over these pillars, the energetic light and winds from massive newly formed stars are evaporating and dispersing the dusty stellar nurseries in which they formed. Within a few million years, the head of this giant, as well as most of its body, will have been completely evaporated by internal and surrounding stars.

A small plane crashed just after taking off from Crystal Airport north of Minneapolis on Saturday, killing a North Dakota state legislator and the pilot, authorities said.

North Dakota state Rep. Liz Conmy, of Fargo, was killed in the crash, her party confirmed.

The North Dakota Democratic–Nonpartisan League Party, an affiliate of the national Democratic Party, paid tribute to Conmy in a social media post, calling her a champion for public education, the environment, and transparency.

“We are completely heartbroken and gutted by the loss of Representative Liz Conmy. Her death is a profound loss for our state,” the party said in a post on X.

Officers responded to a report of a small plane crash at 11:51am local time and found an aircraft that had crashed and caught fire in a park near a residential area in the city of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, police said.

The incident happened shortly after take-off, Brooklyn Park Police Inspector Matt Rabe said.

He wouldn’t say how many people were on the plane, but the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that two people were aboard.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating a crash involving a Beech F33A aeroplane.

Dramatic driveway CCTV from a nearby home captured the moment the plane plummeted and exploded into a fiery ball.

Nobody on the ground was injured following the crash.

A Beechcraft F33A Bonanza, N8032X, was destroyed when it impacted terrain shortly after takeoff from runway 32 at Crystal Airport (MIC/KMIC), Crystal, Minnesota. The two occupants onboard sustained fatal injuries.

ADS-B data shows that the airplane entered a left immediately after takeoff and crashed in the Southbrook Park. ATC recording shows that the pilot made a mumbled transmission and was cleared to land on any runway after takeoff.

Weather conditions at the time included: 0 winds, 10 miles visibility, a broken cloudlayer at 11,000ft AGL, temperature 13°C, dewpoint -2°C, and an altimeter setting of 30.01 inches of mercury.

At the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner attended by US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials, Cole Tomas Allen (31) allegedly charged a security checkpoint near the main ballroom, firing several gunshots.

Authorities say he was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. An exchange of gunfire occurred with Secret Service and other law enforcement officers, resulting in one uniformed division officer being struck in his bulletproof vest, while no guests inside the ballroom were injured.

Allen was subdued and taken into custody without being shot. He is believed to have been a guest at the hotel and acted alone as a “lone actor,” according to preliminary statements from officials, including DC Police and the FBI.

President Trump later described him as a “sick person” and shared images of the detained suspect through his Truth Social account.

A NASA fellow, a teacher and a Press dinner event shooting suspect

The prime accused of the White House correspondents’ dinner shooting incident, Cole Thomas Allen (also referred to as Cole Tomas Allen), a 31-year-old resident of Torrance, California, was identified by multiple law enforcement sources as the suspect at the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C.

Unverified social media profiles, including LinkedIn, describe Allen as an engineer and computer scientist. He was a Caltech alumnus, associated with the university’s “Blitzkrieg Bots” robotics team that won a robotic vehicle design competition in 2016.

He also participated in a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which has led to descriptions of him as a “NASA fellow” in some reports.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Caltech and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from California State University-Dominguez Hills.

Professionally, Allen worked as a mechanical engineer at IJK Controls and served as a teaching assistant at Caltech.

He was employed part-time as a teacher with C2 Education in the Los Angeles area and had reportedly been recognized as Teacher of the Month in Los Angeles County in the past.

In addition to his technical background, he was active as a self-employed indie game developer, creating titles such as “Bohrdom” and “First Law.”

Some unverified reports also claim the suspect donated to Kamala Harris's 2024 campaign, but these details remain unconfirmed officially.

Charges and Court Proceedings

US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced initial federal charges against Allen, including two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.

Additional charges related to firearms possession were expected. The FBI continued to investigate his background, motivations, devices, and any potential connections, with searches planned at his California residence.

Currently, the investigation remains active, with no confirmed motive publicly released, and Allen’s profile is based on preliminary reports from law enforcement sources and media outlets; further details may emerge as the case proceeds.

NASA's SpaceX Crew-13 pays homage to Apollo 13 on mission patch

NASA has assigned its first crew to launch on a mission "13" since Apollo 13 "had a problem" on the way to the moon 56 years ago.

Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney with NASA, Joshua Kutryk with the Canadian Space Agency and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov will lift off for the International Space Station as Crew-13 on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft in mid-September.

The four will serve as members of the station's Expedition 75 and 76 crews, before returning to Earth about five months later.

"This flight is the 13th crew rotation with SpaceX," NASA's announcement read. "The crew will conduct scientific investigations and technology demonstrations to help prepare humans for future exploration missions to the moon and Mars, and benefit people on Earth."

Rather than give into triskaidekaphobia (the fear or avoidance of 13), the crew is embracing it, or at least their connection to the last U.S. launch to be similarly numbered.

The Crew-13 mission patch includes visual nods to the insignia worn by Apollo 13 astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert in April 1970.

Imitation is an option

"NASA's SpaceX Crew-13 patch looks ardently toward the future of space exploration while honoring the legacy of those who came before," reads the official description of the emblem.

At the center of the Crew-13 patch is a golden dragon, which is both a reference to the name of SpaceX's capsule and the golden horses depicted on the Apollo 13 insignia.

(Lovell and his crewmates worked with NASA contract artist Norman Tiller and muralist and sculptor Lumen Winter, who proposed the equestrian design, to create their flight badge.)

The dragon's tail on the Crew-13 patch wraps around Earth in a manner reminiscent of the blue contrail that connects Earth with the horses on the Apollo 13 insignia.

In the 1970 artwork, it was a nod to the Roman and Greek god Apollo; today, is a "bridge between Earth, the International Space Station, the moon and Mars," per NASA's caption.

The use of roman numerals for "XIII" (13) and the lack of crew names on the Crew-13 patch also mimic elements of the design from almost six decades ago, where as the golden stars are symbolic of the Crew-13 families and the overall capsule shape (as opposed to a circle) references the "possibilities born out of human collaboration toward a common goal," according to the space agency.

Thanks to also our Time Machine members who participated in this “Study on quality in 3D digitisation of tangible cultural heritage: Mapping parameters, formats, standards, benchmarks,

methodologies, and guidelines”, this analysis provides exceptional results. It demonstrates that complexity and quality are fundamental considerations in determining the necessary effort for a 3D digitisation project to achieve the required value of the output.

The study led by Cyprus University of Technology has identified all relevant elements for successful 3D digitisation of cultural heritage, classifying them by degree of complexity and purpose or use. The study also looked at what determines the quality of a 3D digitisation project and made an inventory of existing formats, standards, guidelines and methodologies used by the industry. This study (Executive summary in French) also collected a number of projects and success stories serving as benchmarks for 3D digitisation of tangible cultural heritage.

Dr. Marinos Ioannides of the Digital Heritage Research Lab (DHRLab) at Cyprus University of Technology and Director of UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage (CH) led this complex and all-encompassing project, working with nine important players in the industry and a number of external experts providing their research contributing to this exceptional study.

The digital recording of CH is an essential step in understanding and conserving the values of the memory of the past, creating an exact digital record for the future, providing a means to educate, skill, and communicating the knowledge and value of the tangible objects to the society.

The complexity of 3D digitisation of an object, whether it is a building or a small object, depends on many factors, such as the equipment being used, placement of the object or monument, light conditions and texture of the material. All these factors increase the complexity of the 3D digitisation project at hand.

Natural and man-made disasters makes 3D digitisation projects critical for the reconstruction of cultural heritage buildings and objects that are damaged or lost in earthquakes, fires, flooding or degenerated by pollution.

The quality of the result of a 3D digitisation project directly related to the amount of funding available. Europe has a number of highly skilled SMEs in the area of 3D digitisation and these companies wish to see more open procurement processes when objects or buildings are to be digitised using 3D technologies.

Historic Cape Canaveral Space Force Station Skid Strip renovated for modern space mission needs

Leaders reopened the historic runway known as the Skid Strip this week after a two-year, large-scale renovation, marking a new era for one of the most critical pieces of infrastructure supporting U.S. space launch capabilities.

On Tuesday, about 60 leaders from Space Launch Delta 45 gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the project’s completion.

The renovation transformed the previously aging runway into a modern, unified strip ready to support some of the nation’s heaviest military aircraft and payloads.

Workers originally built the runway in the 1950s. It earned its Skid Strip name as a landing site for Snark cruise missiles, which used metal skids instead of wheels to grind to a halt.

Over the decades, repairs and updates turned the 10,000-foot-long, 250-foot-wide runway into a patchwork. The Space Launch Delta 45 Civil Engineer Squadron and the Air Force Civil Engineer Center led the comprehensive overhaul and addressed these deficiencies.

The $50.9 million project added new 1,000-foot-long concrete ends to better support massive aircraft like the C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III, the primary visitors that deliver satellite payloads and mission equipment.

Workers also installed 366 modern LED light fixtures and brought the entire runway up to current codes.

“The mission here at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station is going to continue to evolve, and it’s only through platforms like this that we’re going to be able to stay ahead of our adversaries,” Col. Christopher Bulson, Space Launch Delta 45’s deputy commander for support, said during the ceremony. “Right now, we do about a third of all global launches.” Construction presented a massive logistical undertaking. At its peak, 80 trucks per day transited Cape Canaveral Space Force Station to deliver materials, and a total of 4,520 trucks took part in the project.

The renewed runway reaches 26 inches into the Florida soil to ensure it has a strong, durable foundation.

The work faced unique Florida challenges, including a brief delay when crews relocated gopher tortoises that had undermined some construction areas.

All told, the renovation of the Skid Strip took about two years and finished four months ahead of schedule. Officials originally granted justification to proceed in 2018.

“The scope and scale of this project was massive and to see the Air Force take that on in support of the Space Force mission has been truly incredible,” Bulson said.

“As Cape Canaveral has adjusted over the decades, it’s been about adapting to the new mission of setting launch records.”

Correspondent Zeinab Faraj was seriously wounded earlier this week in an IDF strike that killed reporter Amal Khalil

Wounded Lebanese journalist Zeinab Faraj has described the Israeli strike that killed her colleague Amal Khalil, prompting Beirut to accuse West Jerusalem of war crimes.

In an interview filmed from her hospital bed, Faraj broke down in tears as she recounted the ordeal and her final moments with Khalil.

On Wednesday, Khalil and Faraj were driving through the southern village of al-Tiri when an Israeli drone struck a car ahead of them.

“Completely silently, a missile hit that car. Amal screamed and abruptly turned to the side of the road. We got out of the car and covered under an entrance of some garage,” Faraj told Lebanese Al-Afdal News. Adding that Israeli aircraft were circling overhead along with drones before another missile struck Khalil’s car. Khalil was wounded by shrapnel, and as the vehicle caught fire, her back began burning as she shielded Faraj.

“She told me: ‘Zeinab, I’m burning!’ I grabbed her by her jacket and pulled her toward me,” she recalled. “I couldn’t endure it anymore, I was starting to burn too… I broke the garage door, and Amal and I started crawling inside.”

The pair later hid in a bathroom. Faraj said time passed before she nodded off, with Khalil beside her. “We both lost hope... I woke up just as a missile was coming straight down at us and all I remember is the last moment I saw Amal – when I realized Amal was gone,” she said.

Colleagues said both were wearing gear clearly marked as press. Emergency workers pulled Faraj, who was seriously wounded, from the rubble, but efforts to reach Khalil were delayed after Israeli forces reportedly fired on rescue teams. Her body was recovered hours later.

The strike came despite a ceasefire reached earlier this month, with Israeli military still operating in occupied parts of southern Lebanon and reserving the right to attack what it labels threats.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Israel of the “deliberate and consistent targeting of journalists” to “conceal the truth of its aggressive acts against Lebanon,” while Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called the attack a “war crime.”

UN: Drone Attack Hits Sudan Aid Truck

A drone attack hit an aid truck in Sudan's North Darfur state, destroying all the supplies on board, the UN refugee agency said on Sunday, without identifying who was responsible.

Drone strikes by both the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have been locked in a brutal war since April 2023, have escalated in recent months, often killing dozens at a time.

The UNHCR-operated vehicle "came under drone attack" on Friday while transporting emergency shelter kits to Tawila, home to more than 700,000 displaced people who fled fighting elsewhere in the western Darfur region, AFP quoted the agency as saying.

The driver escaped unhurt, but all supplies were destroyed in the resulting fire, it added.

UNHCR condemned the attack, warning that it would "leave 1,314 families living in desperate conditions in Tawila without shelter" at a time when humanitarian needs are already overwhelming.

More than 127,000 people fled El-Fasher, North Darfur's capital and the army's last stronghold in the region, after it fell to paramilitary forces in October, with reports of mass killings, sexual violence, looting and rape following the takeover.

Fighting has since spread to neighboring Kordofan, now the main theatre of the war, and the southeastern Blue Nile state, raising fears of a longer and increasingly fragmented conflict.

According to the UN, nearly 700 civilians have been killed in drone strikes by both sides since January alone.

UNHCR voiced "deep concern" over the rising use of drones, calling repeated attacks on humanitarian operations "particularly abhorrent".

According to an assessment by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, 28.9 million people, around 62 percent of Sudan's population, are facing acute food insecurity.

That includes 10.2 million who face severe food insecurity, in particular in the wider Darfur region and South Kordofan state.

Famine was declared last year in El-Fasher and Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, with 20 other areas at risk in Darfur and Kordofan, a UN-backed assessment found.

The conflict has already killed tens of thousands, uprooted over 11 million and created the world's largest displacement and hunger crises.

Top US Diplomat Takes Post In Caracas As Part Of Post-Maduro Transition Plan

For the first time in many years, the United States has a top diplomat officially in residence representing Washington to Venezuela.

Veteran US diplomat John M. Barrett has arrived in Caracas to serve as chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Venezuela, the mission announced Thursday, marking a new phase in Washington's diplomatic presence in Venezuela, and after a US military raid on Jan.3 ousted and captured longtime leader Nicolás Maduro.

Barrett is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, and he was tapped by the Trump admin for role in April after most recently serving as chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Guatemala.

His arrival forms part of President Trump's stated three-phase plan to "restore democracy" in Venezuela, with the chargé d’affaires acting as the top US representative in the absence of a Senate-confirmed ambassador.

It must be recalled that it was actually the Director of the CIA who was the first top Trump admin official to visit post-Maduro Caracas and warmly shake hands with new leader, then-Vice President Delcy Rodríguez.

Ironically she had long been among the most staunchly socialist officials within the Chavista regime of Maduro, and her being accepted by Washington shows there was not actual regime change on any institutional level, just the tapping of a more pliant US puppet.

Various reports review that before his posting in Guatemala, Barrett served from 2023 to 2025 as deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Panama.

"The relationship between the United States and Venezuela will shape the future of our hemisphere. My name is John Barrett, and I have just arrived in Venezuela to serve as charge d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas," Barrett said in a newly video published introducing himself and the new role by the embassy on social media.

"President Trump and Secretary Rubio have a clear vision for the prosperity of our region, and I am here to continue implementing their three-phase plan for Venezuela. We remain committed to Venezuela," he added.

His prior diplomatic roles include serving as counselor for economic affairs at the US Embassy in Peru and as consul general in Recife, where he led US diplomatic engagement across eight northeastern states.

What has become extraordinarily clear is that nearly every data center, stadium, government building, power plant, substation, and other critical infrastructure site shares one major vulnerability: the lack of a low-cost, early-warning detection layer against one-way attack drones.

Additionally, Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) architecture should include a kinetic countermeasure layer designed to defeat threats before impact. Without this layered approach, most critical infrastructure remains highly vulnerable to cheap kamikaze drones.

When reports emerge, such as the recent case in New Jersey where 15 crop-spraying drones were reportedly stolen in what investigators described as a sophisticated, coordinated theft, it only reinforces the alarming security concern: these drones, with meaningful payload capacity, can be easily repurposed into weaponized platforms.

The national security news outlet The High Side reports that the FBI is worried about the theft of these drones, as experts warn of "ridiculously bad" consequences and "a potential nightmare scenario" if bad actors weaponize these low-cost flying machines.

"The bureau is freaked out for a good reason," Steve Lazarus, a retired FBI agent, told the local outlet.

Lazarus continued, "These aren't hobby drones with cameras. They're industrial sprayers designed to carry and disperse significant amounts of liquid quickly and with precision. A typical agricultural drone can cover a large area in minutes, following GPS-guided paths — that's exactly what they're built for in farming, but it also means that, in the wrong hands, they're a ready-made delivery system."

While The High Side and investigators are "spooked" by the theft and the mounting risk that these drones could be used to "disperse biological agents," the greater threat is actually their payload capacity and the potential for these drones to be weaponized into low-cost, one-way attack drones.

The assessment we provided at the beginning of the note is that the glaring gap in layered air defenses against small drones in high-value areas will only open the door to advanced, low-cost solutions, such as passive acoustic counter-drone detection, outlined here. Some of these C-UAS systems may soon be imported from companies that currently have deployments in Ukraine.

So let's unpack a few things right up front...

1) He left California and was in DC at the hotel where the WHCD was veing held.

2) Imagine the intent he had to have in order to travel that distance all the while thinking about what he was going to do.

3) He either moved several weapons or procured them in/around DC and figured out a way to get them in proximity to the WHCD.

4) He took the time to load the weapons on to his body (to reportedly include several knives) and nobody noticed.

5) Now here is the kicker...in his hidden location he was somehow aware that the President was in the room and was seated. How/when was he aware of that part?

6) If he wasn't a guest at the WHCD and he couldn't see the President from where he was....how did he know?

7) It's not like he could go look in the room and then go load up with his gear.

8) He was supposedly a guest at the exact hotel? Like every room in that place wasn't booked full over a month in advance? In DC, on a Saturday, with the WHCD in the same hotel....have you ever booked a hotel in DC during a Major Presidential event? Good luck!!!

Regardless, we stand at the ready to pour free beer the day it happens.”

The brewery is owned by Kirk Bangstad, a former Democratic candidate for Wisconsin’s 34th State Assembly district in 2020. Trump "wasn't worried" during White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting

Last night in the nation's capitol a gunman stormed the security perimeter at the White House Correspondents; Dinner. The president, the first lady, the vice president, cabinet members, and more than 2,500 guests were gathered to celebrate the First Amendment and freedom of the press. But after shots were fired, the president was evacuated.

It was at the same hotel where President Ronald Reagan was nearly assassinated by John Hinckley, 45 years ago.

Tonight, federal investigators are looking into the motive of the alleged gunman - a 31-year old teacher from Torrance, California.

He emailed what a senior official called a "manifesto" to his family, minutes before the attack. He wrote he was targeting members of the Trump administration.

We spoke with President Trump this afternoon at the White House about what happened.

Norah O'Donnell: Mr. President, do you know if you were the target of the gunman?

President Trump: I don't know. It sounded to me. I read a manifesto, which is he's radicalized. He was a Christian believer, and then he became an anti-Christian, and he had a lotta change. He's been goin' through a lot, based on what he wrote. His brother complained about him and I think reported him to the police. And his sister, likewise, complained about him. His family was very concerned. He was- probably a pretty sick guy.

Norah O'Donnell: I was in the room not far from you, Mr. President. Could hear what sounded like gunshots or commotion. People nearby could smell the gun powder. Everybody hit the floor. How worried were you that there were gonna be injuries?

President Trump: I wasn't worried. I understand life. We live in a crazy world.

Norah O'Donnell: You are sitting there next to the first lady. The entertainer named Oz Pearlman is talking to you. He's known as The Mentalist. When did you know something was wrong?

President Trump: Right around that point. In fact, you can see the expression on the first lady's face. And your president of the evening, chairman, or president, or both, who was doing a great job, by the way

President Trump: Your your associate, yeah. She was a terrific person. They were asking the name of Karoline's child, that he didn't know, I guess. But he was able to get it.

A man has been heralded as an unsung hero after he moved in front of President Donald Trump as soon as the alarm was sounded about gunfire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

In dramatic footage that has since gone viral, the man - whose identity is currently unknown but is likely a Secret Service agent - was seen reacting with lightning speed.

As the first pops of gunfire echoed through the subterranean lobby of the Washington Hilton, the man did not duck; instead, he lunged toward Trump, using his own body as a human shield to block the Commander-in-Chief from potential fire.
