The 93rd entry in Barnard’s Catalogue of Dark Nebulae, B93 lies within the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud (Messier 24), where its darkness stands in stark contrast to bright stars and gas in the background. In some ways, B93 is really like a ghost, because it contains gas and dust that was dispersed by the deaths of stars, like supernovas. B93 appears as a dark void not because it is empty, but because its dust blocks the light emitted by more distant stars and glowing gas. Like other dark nebulas, some gas from B93, if dense and massive enough, will eventually gravitationally condense to form new stars. If so, then once these stars ignite, B93 will transform from a dark ghost into a brilliant cradle of newborn stars.

This Comet Mysteriously Reversed Its Spin After Passing The Sun, But Why?

A comet whizzing through the Solar System has astonished scientists by doing something they had never seen before.

In early 2017, comet 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresák made its 5.4-year close approach to the Sun, or perihelion.

As it did so, its spin appeared to slow down to a complete halt, before likely starting up again in the opposite direction, according to astronomer David Jewitt of the University of California, Los Angeles.

The reversal itself isn't the crazy part; changes in cometary spin are known to happen sometimes as these icy objects draw near to the Sun. Rather, it's how quickly and dramatically the reversal occurred.

"The previous record for a comet spindown went to 103P/Hartley 2, which slowed its rotation from 17 to 19 hours over 90 days," said astronomer Dennis Bodewits of the University of Maryland, describing the slowdown phase in 2018.

"By contrast, 41P spun down by more than 10 times as much in just 60 days, so both the extent and the rate of this change is something we've never seen before."

The sequence of events is as follows. Observations taken in March 2017 showed that 41P's rotation period was about 20 hours. By May, the rotation had slowed to more than double that length, with one rotation every 53 hours or so.

By December, however, something really weird had happened. The rotation period of the comet had shortened to 14.4 hours – a change, Jewitt believes, that can best be explained if its rotation had slowed to a complete stop sometime around June 2017 and then changed direction.

This is actually fairly easy to explain, in theory. Comets are clumpy agglomerations of rock and ice that spend most of their orbital periods just trucking along. However, as they get closer to the Sun, the ice in their bodies starts to transition directly into gas, a process called sublimation.

Jets and geysers burst forth, spraying vapor out into space. Each of these jets imparts a torque on the cometary nucleus. This is why so many comets change their spin as they go around the Sun, some spinning up to such high speeds that they fall apart completely.

In addition, the spin of a smaller comet changes more readily than the spin of a larger one. At roughly a kilometer wide – about the length of 10 football fields laid end to end – 41P is small enough for those gas jets to have an outsized effect.

If the Sun heated it unevenly, or if the distribution of its ice content was lopsided, its rapid reversal is relatively easy to explain mathematically.

Now, there's still a little bit of a question mark. The light-curve measurements taken of 41P can give its spin rate, but not its spin direction.

Jewitt arrived at his conclusions by plotting the lightcurves along with new estimates of the comet's size, calculated from archival Hubble Space Telescope data. He could only make them line up smoothly if the comet's spin had slowed to zero and then flipped.

"The observed, rapid changes are natural consequences of torques from outgassed volatiles acting on the very small nucleus," Jewitt writes in his preprint, which has not yet been peer-reviewed.

If 41P's spin continues evolving at the rate seen in 2017, it could spin itself apart within a few short decades, Jewitt found. We don't know yet if that's the case.

There are no published spin rates from its September 2022 perihelion. The next opportunity to measure its spin rate will be its 2028 perihelion.

Comets are among the more fascinating relics of the early Solar System. They're fragile and change rapidly, but somehow they're still here, 4.5 billion years after the Solar System formed.

The changes displayed by 41P over the course of 2017, and the decades prior, suggest that it may be the remnant of a much larger comet that has been gradually whittled away by its long, slow dance with the Sun.

Caltech scientist shot to death in front of Los Angeles County home

A 29-year-old man was charged with murder after he allegedly shot and killed a Caltech scientist in front of a Los Angeles County home earlier this week.

The LA County Sheriff's Department said Freddy Snyder, 29, allegedly killed 67-year-old Carl Grillmair in the High Desert city of Llano on Monday morning.

Deputies responded to the 30700 block of 165th Street East and found Grillmair on the porch with a fatal gunshot wound. LA County Fire Department paramedics tried to save Grillmair's life but ultimately pronounced him dead shortly after.

Deputies said Snyder ran away from the home and allegedly carjacked another person nearby.

The LA County District Attorney's Office charged Snyder with murder, carjacking and burglary. His bail is set at $2 million.

A colleague confirmed that Grillmair worked at the California Institute of Technology.

According to his profile on Caltech's website, Grillmair's research focused on dark matter, galactic structure, stellar populations and exoplanets.

"We are shocked," Caltech scientist Sergio Fajardo-Acosta said. "This was so unexpected. Carl was full of life."

Fajardo-Acosta has known Grillmair for 26 years and worked with him at Caltech's Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC).

"Carl is irreplaceable because of the ingenuity he injected into his research in astronomy," Fajardo-Acosta said.

Grillmair was awarded the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.

"He was always ready to teach," Fajardo-Acosta said. "To share his knowledge, he never held anything back."

"The shark was estimated to be between 3 and 4 metres in length, and was recorded at 490 metres below sea level – where the temperature was a near-freezing 1.27ºC, or 34.29 ºF.

"Alan Jamieson, the founding director of the University of Western Australia-based research centre, said he found no record of another shark found in the Antarctic Ocean.

“We went down there not expecting to see sharks because there’s a general rule of thumb that you don’t get sharks in Antarctica,” said Jamieson.

NASA Begins Artemis II Launch Pad Ops After Successful Fuel Test

NASA successfully fueled its SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and demonstrated the launch countdown for Artemis II on Thursday during a wet dress rehearsal at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Engineers loaded more than 700,000 gallons of liquid propellant into the rocket, sent a closeout crew to the launch pad to demonstrate closing the Orion spacecraft’s hatches, and completed two runs of terminal count — the final phase of the launch countdown.

The Artemis II crew also observed part of the test from the Launch Control Center at NASA Kennedy.

During the test, teams closely monitored liquid hydrogen fueling operations, which proved challenging during previous tests.

Hydrogen gas concentrations remained under allowable limits, giving engineers confidence in new seals installed in an interface used to route fuel to the rocket.

Early in fueling operations, teams experienced a loss of ground communications in the Launch Control Center.

Operators temporarily moved to backup communication methods to maintain safe propellant loading activities before normal communications channels were restored. Engineers isolated the equipment that caused the issue.

While engineers review data from the test, the Artemis II crew is preparing to enter quarantine late Friday, Feb. 20, in Houston.

Although NASA has not set a formal launch date, beginning the roughly 14-day quarantine to limit the crew’s exposure to illness before launch preserves flexibility in the March launch window.

NASA will discuss the wet dress rehearsal during a news conference at 11 a.m. EST Friday on the agency’s YouTube channel.

Over the next several days, technicians will use cranes to set up temporary access platforms on the mobile launcher.

The platforms will allow them to reach the upper left and right segments of the SLS solid rocket boosters and core stage intertank to service the flight termination system and retest it to meet Eastern Range safety requirements.

The platforms were developed based on lessons learned during Artemis I and enable NASA to complete end-to-end testing of the safety system while at the launch pad rather than rolling back to the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA Kennedy for retesting.

The closeout crew also will practice closeout operations once more, adding to the team’s proficiency.

As part of a Golden Age of innovation and exploration, Artemis will pave the way for new U.S. crewed missions on the lunar surface in preparation to send the first astronauts to Mars.

NASA Releases Report on Starliner Crewed Flight Test Investigation

At a news conference on Thursday, NASA released a report of findings from the Program Investigation Team examining the Boeing CST-100 Starliner Crewed Flight Test as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Program.

“The Boeing Starliner spacecraft has faced challenges throughout its uncrewed and most recent crewed missions. While Boeing built Starliner, NASA accepted it and launched two astronauts to space.

The technical difficulties encountered during docking with the International Space Station were very apparent,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.

“To undertake missions that change the world, we must be transparent about both our successes and our shortcomings. We have to own our mistakes and ensure they never happen again.

Beyond technical issues, it is clear that NASA permitted overarching programmatic objectives of having two providers capable of transporting astronauts to-and-from orbit, influence engineering and operational decisions, especially during and immediately after the mission.

We are correcting those mistakes. Today, we are formally declaring a Type A mishap and ensuring leadership accountability so situations like this never reoccur.

We look forward to working with Boeing as both organizations implement corrective actions and return Starliner to flight only when ready.”

Starliner launched June 5, 2024, on its first crewed test flight to the International Space Station.

Originally planned as an eight-to-14-day mission, the flight was extended to 93 days after propulsion system anomalies were identified while the spacecraft was in orbit.

After reviewing flight data and conducting ground test at White Sands Test Facility, NASA decided to return the spacecraft without NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams.

Starliner returned from the space station in September 2024, landing at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico. Wilmore and Williams later returned safely to Earth aboard the agency’s SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission in March 2025.

In February 2025, NASA chartered an independent Program Investigation Team to investigate the technical, organizational, and cultural contributors to the test flight issues.

This report was completed in November 2025. NASA and Boeing have been working together since Starliner returned 18 months ago to identify and address the challenges encountered during the mission, and the technical root cause work continues.

Investigators identified an interplay of combined hardware failures, qualification gaps, leadership missteps, and cultural breakdowns that created risk conditions inconsistent with NASA’s human spaceflight safety standards. NASA will accept this as the final report.

As a result, NASA is taking corrective actions to address the findings of the report, in an effort to ensure the lessons learned contribute to crew and mission safety of future Starliner flights and all NASA programs.

Due to the loss of the spacecraft’s maneuverability as the crew approached the space station and the associated financial damages incurred, NASA has classified the test flight as a Type A mishap.

While there were no injuries and the mission regained control prior to docking, this highest-level classification designation recognizes there was potential for a significant mishap.

NASA will continue to work closely with Boeing to fully understand and solve the technical challenges with the Starliner vehicle alongside incorporating the investigative recommendations before flying the next mission.

Thursday Packed With Human Research as Station’s Orbit is Boosted

Relaxation, exercise, and biomedical studies were the key research objectives for the Expedition 74 crew on Thursday as NASA and its partners investigate ways to keep astronauts healthy on long-term missions.

The International Space Station is also orbiting higher after the docked Progress 93 cargo craft fired its thrusters on Wednesday.

Flight Engineers Jessica Meir of NASA and Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) kicked off Thursday exploring how to reduce stress and improve sleep while living and working aboard a spacecraft.

The duo, right after waking up, first filled out a questionnaire documenting stress and emotions experienced off the Earth. Next, the two astronauts collected their saliva samples so researchers can analyze a crew member’s stress and immunity levels.

The RelaxPro study sponsored by ESA explores using non-invasive relaxation and meditation techniques aboard a spacecraft to improve astronaut health and promote mission success.

The NASA and ESA astronauts then joined each other in the afternoon and reviewed setting up hardware for the ARED (advanced resistive exercise device) Kinematics exercise study that takes place in the Tranquility module.

They watched a video explaining the precise positioning of four cameras to capture a crew member’s workout, calibrating the cameras, setting up a video monitor, and configuring a computer for data acquisition.

Doctors are exploring the forces an astronaut’s muscles and bones experience when working out in weightlessness to maintain fitness and health during a long-term spaceflight.

NASA Flight Engineer Jack Hathaway began his shift organizing blood sampling hardware then retrieving biomedical samples from a science freezer for scientific processing. Afterward, Hathaway transferred food packs into the Harmony module and staged them for future crew usage.

During the second half of his shift, he loaded cargo into a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft for return to Earth then joined Meir for a call to mission controllers discussing their experience flying the Dragon crew spacecraft as it docked to the orbital outpost on Feb. 14.

NASA Flight Engineer Chris Williams partnered with Meir twice on Thursday during two short biomedical sessions. He first assisted her as she drew her blood sample, spun it in a centrifuge, then stowed it in a science freezer to analyze her bone health.

Toward the end of the crew’s shift, Meir imaged William’s eyes using medical imaging hardware as doctors on the ground remotely monitored to see how microgravity is affecting his retina, optic nerve, and cornea.

Williams also worked in the Kibo laboratory module uninstalling the Solid Combustion Experiment Module following the completion of its scientific objectives, including improving spacecraft fire safety and observing how solid fuels burn in microgravity.

Roscosmos Flight Engineer Andrey Fedyaev, who is beginning his second spaceflight, worked on a pair of investigations on Thursday using advanced technology.

For the first experiment, Fedyaev wore virtual reality goggles and responded to visual and audio signals to test his sense of balance and orientation in space.

For the second experiment, he tested artificial intelligence-assisted tools to convert speech-to-text for improved documentation for data and communications with ground controllers.

Station Commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov assisted Fedyaev with the advanced human research studies. Kud-Sverchkov also trained to perform procedures and use medical hardware in case of a medical emergency board the orbital outpost.

Finally, the two-time station resident downloaded radiation data the station is exposed to while orbiting Earth for analysis.

Roscosmos Flight Engineer Sergei Mikaev primarily spent Thursday on lab upkeep activities focusing most of his time on locating and inventorying hardware throughout the station’s Roscosmos segment.

Mikaev also checked the Elektron oxygen generator’s water tanks for air bubbles to ensure the life support device’s continuous operation.

The Roscosmos Progress 93 spacecraft fired its thrusters for 10 minutes, 55 seconds to reboost the station ahead of the launch of the Progress 94 resupply spacecraft.

NASA Investigates How People Respond to Air Taxi Noise

New kinds of aircraft taking to the skies could mean unfamiliar sounds overhead — and where you’re hearing them might matter, according to new NASA research.

NASA aeronautics has worked for years to enable new air transportation options for people and goods, and to find ways to make sure they can be safely and effectively integrated into U.S. communities.

That’s why the agency continues to study how people respond to aircraft noise. In this case, NASA’s work focused on air taxis, shorthand for a variety of aircraft intended to carry people short distances for everything from personal travel to medical treatment.

Researchers investigated whether residents in loud cities would respond differently to air taxi sounds than those in quieter suburban settings.

From late August through September 2025, 359 participants in the Los Angeles, New York City, and Dallas-Fort Worth areas took part in NASA’s Varied Advanced Air Mobility Noise and Geographic Area Response Difference (VANGARD) test.

Researchers played 67 unique sounds simulating aircraft, including NASA-owned industry concept designs. To ensure unbiased feedback, the research team withheld aircraft manufacturer names. Participants were also not shown images of the aircraft they were hearing.

Initial results reveal that residents living in noisy areas reported being more bothered by the air taxi sounds than those in quieter areas.

The VANGARD team members are currently analyzing the data to better understand these findings, but so far, they’re hypothesizing that people in loud environments may simply be more sensitive to additional noise.

“With air taxis coming soon, we need to understand how people will react to a variety of future aircraft sounds,” said Sidd Krishnamurthy, lead researcher at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.

“This test filled a critical gap, and its results will improve how we predict human reactions to noise, guiding the design and operation of future aircraft.”

During the study, participants listened to individual aircraft flyover sounds and rated their annoyance levels. The participants also provided their zip codes, allowing the researchers to sort their locations into high and low background noise levels.

“We wanted to know if people in low or high background noise zones would be more annoyed by the air taxi sounds, and to what extent, even without their usual background sounds present during the test,” Krishnamurthy said.

Most participants listened from their home locations, with their own audio devices. But to complement that testing, a control group of 20 people listened in-person at NASA Langley in June, using tablets and headphones with fixed audio settings.

Results showed that the control group responded similarly to those who tested from home.

Many factors influence how humans respond to aircraft noise. This study was not designed to answer every question — for example, it did not look at the potential effects of high background noise masking air taxi noise — but it provided the VANGARD team with initial insights.

The results from this study, and any follow-on efforts, will guide the design and operation of future advanced air mobility aircraft to help designers and regulators determine how and where these aircraft may fly.

This research was led under the Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology project and contributes to NASA’s advanced air mobility research. The project falls under the Advanced Air Vehicles Program within NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate.

The Ranger Road Fire began in Oklahoma in the afternoon of Tuesday, February 17. The fire has since spread across the border into southern Kansas and, as of February 19, burned more than 283,000 acres.

The image comparison above shows the day the fire started, February 17, on the left "A" side. The active fire front can be seen encircling the burned area in bright red, with smoke emanating from the fire.

Move the center swipe bar to the left to see by Wednesday, February 18, the burned area in brown has doubled to almost twice the size of Chicago. The fire is currently only about 15 percent contained.

The false-color corrected reflectance images were acquired by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the joint NASA/NOAA NOAA-20 platform.

The Plains have been experiencing extremely critical to elevated fire weather conditions these past few days due to dry air, high and sustained winds up to 20 mph, and dry vegetation with high burn risk.

Winds Whip Up Fires and Dust on the Southern Plains

High winds coupled with dry conditions fueled fast-spreading wildland fires in the U.S. southern Plains in winter 2026.

On February 17, several large blazes broke out on the Oklahoma Panhandle and burned quickly through tens of thousands of acres of grasslands and shrublands.

The winds also caused dust storms and low visibility throughout the wider region.

Smoke from multiple fires as well as wind-borne dust streamed across the Plains on the afternoon of February 17, when the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this image.

The Ranger Road fire, the largest of the group, started that day shortly after noon near Beaver, Oklahoma, and spread rapidly throughout the afternoon.

By the evening, it had burned into Kansas and consumed an estimated 145,000 acres (587,000 hectares), the Oklahoma Forestry Service reported.

Combined with other fires nearby, including the Stevens and Side Road fires near Tyrone, Oklahoma, more than 155,000 acres burned that day, the agency said.

The Ranger Road fire exhibited features of a “fast fire,” a particularly dangerous and destructive type of fire characterized by rapid spread.

These blazes usually burn in grasslands and shrublands rather than forests, often occur in autumn and winter when fuels are dry, and are propelled by strong winds.

Wind gusts up to 70 miles (110 kilometers) per hour were measured across the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles on February 17, the National Weather Service said.

The fires destroyed several structures, threatened farmland and livestock, and prompted evacuation orders for parts of western Oklahoma and southern Kansas, according to news reports.

Oklahoma’s governor declared a disaster emergency for counties in the Panhandle.

Persistent winds and dry conditions led to further fire growth on February 18. The Ranger Road and Stevens fires approximately doubled in size that day, the Oklahoma Forestry Services reported.

On February 19, a red flag warning remained in effect for the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, with forecasts calling for wind gusts up to 40 miles (64 kilometers) per hour and very low relative humidity.

Wind-blown dust created other serious hazards across the region. Near Pueblo, Colorado (west of this scene), poor visibility led to a deadly pileup of dozens of vehicles on Interstate 25, according to reports. A

Webb maps Uranus's mysterious upper atmosphere

For the first time, an international team of astronomers have mapped the vertical structure of Uranus’s upper atmosphere, uncovering how temperature and charged particles vary with height across the planet.

Using NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope's NIRSpec instrument, the team observed Uranus for nearly a full rotation, detecting the faint glow from molecules high above the clouds.

The results offer a new window into how ice-giant planets distribute energy in their upper layers.

Led by Paola Tiranti of Northumbria University in the United Kingdom, the study mapped out the temperature and density of ions in the atmosphere extending up to 5000 km above Uranus’s cloud tops, a region called the ionosphere where the atmosphere becomes ionised and interacts strongly with the planet’s magnetic field.

These unique data provide the most detailed portrait yet of where the planet’s auroras form, how they are influenced by its unusually tilted magnetic field, and how Uranus’s atmosphere has continued to cool over the past three decades.

The measurements show that temperatures peak between 3000 and 4000 km, while ion densities reach their maximum around 1000 km, revealing clear longitudinal variations linked to the complex geometry of the magnetic field.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to see Uranus’s upper atmosphere in three dimensions,” said Paola.

“With Webb’s sensitivity, we can trace how energy moves upward through the planet’s atmosphere and even see the influence of its lopsided magnetic field.”

Webb’s data confirm that Uranus’s upper atmosphere is still cooling, extending a trend that began in the early 1990s.

The team measured an average temperature of around 426 kelvins (about 150 degrees Celsius), lower than values recorded by ground-based telescopes or previous spacecraft.

Two bright auroral bands were detected near Uranus’s magnetic poles, together with a distinct depletion in emission and ion density in part of the region between two bands (a feature likely linked to transitions in magnetic field lines).

Similar darkened regions have been seen at Jupiter, where the geometry of the magnetic field there controls how charged particles travel through the upper atmosphere.

“Uranus’s magnetosphere is one of the strangest in the Solar System,” added Paola. “It’s tilted and offset from the planet’s rotation axis, which means its auroras sweep across the surface in complex ways.

Webb has now shown us how deeply those effects reach into the atmosphere. By revealing Uranus’s vertical structure in such detail, Webb is helping us understand the energy balance of the ice giants.

This is a crucial step towards characterising giant planets beyond our Solar System.”

The study is based on data from JWST General Observer programme 5073 (PI: H. Melin of Northumbria University in the United Kingdom), which used NIRSpec’s Integral Field Unit on 19 January 2025 to observe Uranus for 15 hours.

The research has been published in the Geophysical Research Letters.

Lunar New Year fireworks seen from orbit

NASA astronaut Chris Williams has shared an enchanting view of fireworks exploding in the sky over Beijing from the International Space Station (ISS), as millions gathered on the world below to celebrate Lunar New Year on the night of Feb. 17.

Williams captured spectacular detail in the complex network of highways and thoroughfares branching out from the bright urban centres of Beijing, and the coastal city of Tianjin, which can be seen to the southeast of the Chinese capital

On the night of Feb. 17, this metropolitan light show was bolstered by the light cast by spectacular fireworks displays, which took on a static-like appearance in the time-lapse footage captured from 250 miles (402 kilometers) above Earth in low orbit.

"Happy Year of the Horse," wrote Williams in an X post accompanying the video. "I was fortunate to be looking out of the Cupola while we were passing over Beijing and saw the twinkling of fireworks celebrating the Lunar New Year!"

Meanwhile, Chinese taikonauts Zhang Lu, Wu Fei and Zhang Hongzhang marked the celebration in orbit by adorning the Tiangong Space Station with festive decorations and a feast, while also sharing a music video partially filmed aboard the orbital outpost, titled "Let the five-star red flag fly high in space".

What spacecraft are in frame?

A circular solar panel belonging to the Northrop Grumman-built Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft NG-23 can be seen to the right of the shot. The spacecraft carried 11,000 pounds (4,990 kilograms) of supplies and equipment to the orbital station following its launch on Sept. 14, 2025.

The MS-28 Soyuz spacecraft — whose rocket caused significant damage to the only crew-capable launch pad at Russia's Baikonur Cosmodrome upon lifting off on Thanksgiving Day in November last year — is visible to the left of the Cygnus freighter.

The spacecraft and its crew, composed of NASA's Chris Williams and cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev are due to depart the station and return to Earth this summer.

A mini 'planetary parade' is visible tonight. Can you spot them all?

Look to the western horizon at sunset on Feb. 20 to witness an incredible sight, as three planets shine below the slender crescent of the waxing moon, with Jupiter glowing high overhead in the winter sky.

The upturned sickle-shape of the 18%-lit moon will appear 40 degrees above the horizon as the sun sets, with a string of bright "evening stars" representing Venus, Mercury and Saturn arrayed beneath, fighting for attention in the glow of the setting sun.

Saturn will be positioned 15 degrees directly below the crescent moon, with Mercury less than 10 degrees— roughly the width of your clenched fist held at arm's length — to its lower right.

Mercury is currently in prime viewing position, having just passed its point of greatest eastern elongation on Feb. 19, when it was at its furthest from the sun in Earth's sky in its current evening apparition.

Find a spot with a clear view to the west for a chance to see Venus shining directly below Mercury, less than 10 degrees above the horizon at sunset.

Neptune will also be present less than 1 degree — approximately the width of your little finger — to the right of Saturn, though it'll be too dim to spot with the naked eye.

Neptune is so distant that the blue spec of its disk can only be seen with the aid of an 8-inch telescope, but utmost care must be taken to ensure that the sun is well below the horizon before pointing any telescopic equipment in its direction.

Uranus, meanwhile, will be five degrees below the Pleiades on Feb. 20 and while technically just bright enough to spot with the naked eye from a dark sky location, the planet will also benefit from the magnifying power of a telescope to spot its tiny aqua disk.

Jupiter dominates the sky this time of year and can be found high in the east at sunset, glowing with the bright stars Castor and Pollux in the constellation Gemini.

A 6-inch telescope will reveal details in the cloud bands lining its surface, along with its four largest moons, Io, Ganymede, Europa and Callisto.

The lunar crescent will also make for a fascinating telescopic target, just three days out from its new moon phase on Feb. 17.

Look out for the dark forms of Mare Crisium and Mare Fecunditatis darkening the sunlit wedge of Earth's satellite, which formed when ancient lava flows flooded networks of impact craters before hardening many millions of years ago.

Next, sweep your telescope across the line separating night from day on the lunar surface — known as the terminator — to spot a myriad of shadowed impact craters scarring the lunar surface.

As NASA and private space companies plan missions farther from Earth, one nurse is working to make sure nursing is part of the conversation.

Christine Rincon founded The Space Nurse to advocate for a formal role for nurses in space travel and long-duration missions.

Her message is that if humans are going to live and thrive in space, not just survive, nurses need to be involved.

Why Nursing Is Missing From Space Missions

Rincon became a nurse in 2015. At the time, she said space nursing “wasn’t really a thing.”

She initially believed that by the time she gained experience, opportunities might open up. By 2026, Rincon realized the profession still did not have a clear pathway into space operations.

Currently, space missions rely on a flight surgeon, and a biomedical engineering team in mission control.

If a medical issue occurs aboard the International Space Station, teams coordinate from Earth and evacuate if needed.

But as Rincon pointed out, missions to Mars would take about six months to reach their destination. Evacuation would not be an option.

As space agencies plan to go farther, Rincon believes medical teams must begin to "mirror Earth."

“Who better to care for the whole person than the nurse?” she said.

Nurses Already Have the Skills NASA Needs

Rincon said many NASA job postings use engineering terms that may cause nurses to overlook opportunities.

One example she shared: “human in the loop processes.”

At first, Rincon did not recognize the term and assumed it did not apply to her. After researching it, she realized nurses use human in the loop processes daily.

Examples she provided include:

Opening a medication dispensing system like Pixis and deciding whether to override a warning

Reviewing electronic medical record sepsis alerts and determining whether a patient is truly septic

In both cases, the machine provides data, but the human makes the final decision.

Rincon said nurses may read those job postings and move on without realizing that the experience described applies to them.

She also referenced NASA Standard 3001, which outlines environmental requirements such as:

Temperature

Air quality

Oxygen levels

According to Rincon, nurses understand those parameters in practical, patient-centered ways.

Microgravity Changes Patient Care

Rincon is currently teaching nurses about how microgravity affects the human body.

Gravity, she explained, is something healthcare providers take for granted until it is gone.

Biosphere 2’s SAM to become testing ground for next-generation space habitats

From carbon-scrubbing crops to advanced life-support technology and an indoor Mars yard, the facility is emerging as a proving site for future off-world missions.

At the University of Arizona’s Biosphere 2, the Space Analog for the Moon and Mars, better known as SAM, operates as a sealed habitat where air, water and food are measured and recycled as if it were far from Earth’s croplands and life-sustaining atmosphere.

SAM’s research informs the future of astronaut life-support systems while advancing a broader goal: positioning the facility as a critical testing ground for next-generation space habitats.

The SAM facility is built around Biosphere 2’s original 1987 Test Module, a prototype designed to determine whether humans could survive inside a sealed environment on Earth.

The module was later abandoned until Kai Staats, SAM’s director of research, led a reconstruction effort. After years of restoration, the original pressure vessel was expanded and now includes a crew quarters with a kitchen, bath, engineering bay, airlock, carbon dioxide scrubber and life support monitors.

Together, they form a pressurized habitat analog capable of hosting long-duration missions with up to four crew.

Testing life support with crops – and one human

SAM’s most recent mission sealed a single crew member, Matthias Beach, a member of the SAM development and operations team, inside the habitat with 144 dwarf pea plants to test whether crops could help sustain human life in isolation.

The experiment lays a foundation for future off-world missions.

Conducted over two weeks in October 2025, the dwarf pea experiment tracked how efficiently plants sequester carbon dioxide and return oxygen in a confined environment.

Initially, every breath Beach exhaled inside SAM was captured by the plants through photosynthesis and converted back into breathable air.

On Day 8, with Beach still inside, the peas were harvested so the team could observe the level of carbon dioxide and record a precise measurement of how much carbon each plant had been removing from the air.

The test demonstrated how a relatively small number of crops could become part of a closed air system to support life on future lunar or Martian settlements. For the crew member inside, the experiment was also a deeply personal experience.

“When I harvested the plants, it was actually kind of sad,” Beach said. “I took pictures of a few that I thought were adorable, and I really missed them afterward.

I missed hearing the pumps cycle on and off every half hour, the glow of the lights and that smell – the humidity and the green. Without it, the habitat felt more like a spaceship.”

Additional crops are slated for testing inside SAM through 2026, contributing to a growing database documenting how 20 or more food species might support air revitalization in a sealed habitat.

Those crops include peas, wheat, rice, barley, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, sweet potatoes and white potatoes, Staats said.

The dataset will help determine how many square meters of crops are needed to support long duration, human-crewed missions and how much carbon those crops can recycle.

Chance Saltzman and Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John Bentivenga presided over a Basic Military Training graduation ceremony, engaging with military training instructors and the service's newest Guardians throughout the visit to Joint Base San Antonio, Feb. 17 through 19.

Earlier in the week, Bentivenga participated in a BMT graduation "Patching Ceremony," personally applying U.S. Space Force patches to graduates' uniforms, as a symbolic moment to mark each trainee's transition to Guardian, before he addressed the graduates on the importance of their mission to dominate the space domain and secure the nation's future.

On Feb. 18, Bentivenga led the newest Guardians in the "Airman and Guardian's Run," a one-and-a-half-mile run that celebrates the culmination of Air Force and Space Force BMT.

The event gave families and guests their first glimpse of their trainee-turned-graduate in seven-and-a-half weeks.

Saltzman and Bentivenga later sat down with MTIs over lunch to discuss the future of BMT training, strategies to recruit and retain quality instructors, and the critical role MTIs play in shaping, training and inspiring Guardians with the foundation to deliver the world's premier space power.

At the graduation ceremony, Saltzman spoke directly to the newest class of Airmen and Guardians about the challenges ahead.

"You are joining our military at a time unlike we've seen in generations, and our world will continue to evolve," Saltzman said.

"The threats we face in the air and in space will only grow more complex, and our adversaries are sharpening their own swords every day."

Saltzman was quick to follow with a message of confidence in the graduating class. "But I'm not worried," Saltzman continued. "Each of you has proven yourself.

I know you have the courage to challenge the status quo, the innovative spirit to stay a step ahead of our adversaries and the warrior mindset to meet anything the nation demands of you."

Saltzman closed his remarks on a personal note.

"I'm incredibly proud of each and every one of you, and I'm confident that no matter the challenges we may face in the future, you have what it takes to fight and win, for your families and for our nation," Saltzman said.

Space Force Guardians complete BMT alongside Air Force recruits at JBSA-Lackland, the sole BMT installation for both services.

The Space Force, established in December 2019, continues to shape its culture, identity and training standards as the nation's newest military branch.

Russian planes escorted out of air space near Alaska

Five Russian planes flew into the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone and were escorted out by U.S. planes on Thursday.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command detected the two Tu-95s, two Su-35s, and one A-50 and tracked them in the ADIZ, a NORAD press release said.

NORAD launched two F-16s, two F-35s, one E-3, and four KC-135s to intercept, identify and escort the planes until they left the Alaskan ADIZ.

The Russian military aircraft stayed in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian airspace. This activity in the Alaskan ADIZ happens regularly and isn't seen as a threat, NORAD said.

An ADIZ is a defined stretch of international airspace that requires the identification of all aircraft in the interest of national security.

NORAD uses a layered defense network of satellites, ground-based and airborne radars and fighter planes to detect and track aircraft, the release said.

A similar event happened in September near Alaska, as it did in August two days in a row. The August event drew attention because it happened soon after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Alaska to meet with President Donald Trump.

Stolen ambulance crashes into DHS office space in Idaho

Investigators were searching Thursday for a person who stole an ambulance and crashed it into an Idaho office building leased by the Department of Homeland Security in what authorities called a targeted attack.

Someone stole a Canyon County Paramedics ambulance from St. Luke’s Medical Center in Meridian, just west of Boise, around 12:30 a.m., according to authorities. No one else was in the ambulance.

According to Meridian Chief of Police Tracy Basterrechea, the suspect “retrieved gas cans stashed around vegetation.” The suspect then drove the ambulance into a nearby building leased for DHS, including workspace associated with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Meridian authorities said the suspect tried but failed to light the accelerant and ignite the gas cans. Gasoline appeared to be poured in and outside of the ambulance, but the suspect appeared to be scared off by first responders and fled the scene.

During a news conference Thursday afternoon, authorities said they believe this was a targeted attack on DHS property.

Staff from the Seattle field office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on the scene.

Kiev’s ability to supply fresh soldiers to the front line has significantly diminished, putting the Ukrainian army on a downward spiral, a senior Russian military planner has said. The Ukrainian army’s strength is being sapped by mass desertion and public resistance to mandatory conscription.

The Russian military estimates Ukrainian military casualties at over 520,000 in 2025 and 1.5 million since the conflict escalated in 2022, Gen. Sergey Rudskoy, head of operations at the Russian General Staff, said in an interview published Friday.

“Presently, the Kiev regime has largely lost the ability to replenish its units through obligatory mobilization.

The number of recruitments per month has dropped by about two times,” Rudskoy told Krasnaya Zvezda, the Russian armed forces’ official newspaper. “A trend is forming for the decrease of the Ukrainian army’s strength.”

During his nomination hearings last month, Ukrainian Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov told lawmakers that two million potential recruits were on a wanted list for draft evasion and 200,000 troops had deserted.

This month, human rights ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets reported a sharp rise in complaints against mobilization enforcers, calling it a “systemic crisis.”

New videos of violent confrontations between conscription patrols and civilians are published by Ukrainian media almost daily, even as authorities claim most such footage is fabricated.

In the interview, Rudskoy also discussed Russian battlefield progress and how technological changes are affecting military planning. Modern warfare demands faster AI-assisted decision-making and broad deployment of robotic systems, he said.

Mass use of drones in the Ukraine conflict has made them comparable to artillery in terms of damage inflicted, Rudskoy added. Drones have also redefined front lines, creating a “zone of blanket kinetic action” extending up to 15 kilometers from friendly positions.

Supreme Court strikes down tariffs.

In a major ruling on presidential power, the Supreme Court on Friday struck down the sweeping tariffs that President Donald Trump imposed in a series of executive orders. By a vote of 6-3, the justices ruled that the tariffs exceed the powers given to the president by Congress under a 1977 law providing him the authority to regulate commerce during national emergencies created by foreign threats.

The court did not weigh in, however, on whether or how the federal government should provide refunds to the importers who have paid the tariffs, estimated in 2025 at more than $200 billion.

The law at the center of the case is the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, known as IEEPA,which authorizes the president to use the law “to deal with any unusual and extraordinary threat, which has its source in whole or substantial part outside the United States, to the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States, if the president declares a national emergency with respect to such threat.” A separate provision of the law provides that when there is a national emergency, the president may “regulate … importation or exportation” of “property in which any foreign country or a national thereof has any interest.”

The dispute at the center of Friday’s opinion began last year, when Trump issued a series of executive orders imposing the tariffs. Lawsuits filed by small businesses and a group of states, all of which say that they are affected by the increased tariffs, were filed in the lower courts, which agreed with the challengers that IEEPA did not authorize Trump’s tariffs. But those rulings were put on hold, allowing the government to continue to collect the tariffs while the Supreme Court proceedings moved forward.

In a splintered decision on Friday, the Supreme Court agreed with the challengers that IEEPA did not give Trump the power to impose the tariffs. “Based on two words separated by 16 others in … IEEPA—‘regulate’ and ‘importation’—the President asserts the independent power to impose tariffs on imports from any country, of any product, at any rate, for any amount of time,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote. “Those words,” he continued, “cannot bear such weight.” “IEEPA,” Roberts added, “contains no reference to tariffs or duties.” Moreover, “until now no President has read IEEPA to confer such power.”

In a part of the opinion joined by Justice Neil Gorsuch and Justice Amy Coney Barrett, Roberts said that Trump’s reliance on IEEPA to impose the tariffs violated the “major questions” doctrine – the idea that if Congress wants to delegate the power to make decisions of vast economic or political significance, it must do so clearly. “When Congress has delegated its tariff powers,” Roberts said, “it has done so in explicit terms, and subject to strict limits,” a test that Trump’s tariffs failed here.

The court’s three Democratic appointees – Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson – joined another part of the Roberts opinion, holding that Trump’s tariffs were also not supported by the text of IEEPA. “The U.S. Code,”Roberts noted, “is replete with statutes granting the Executive the authority to ‘regulate’ someone or something. Yet the Government cannot identify any statute in which the power to regulate includes the power to tax.”(that is stretching and stupid. Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote the main dissent, which was joined by Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. In his view, Trump had the authority under IEEPA to impose the tariffs because they “are a traditional and common tool to regulate importation.” Moreover, he suggested, although “I firmly disagree with the Court’s holding today, the decision might not substantially constrain a President’s ability to order tariffs going forward … because numerous other federal statutes authorize the President to impose tariffs and might justify most (if not all) of the tariffs at issue in this case.”

Kavanaugh also warned that “[i]n the meantime, however, the interim effects of the Court’s decision could be substantial. The United States may be required to refund billions of dollars to importers who paid the IEEPA tariffs, even though some importers may have already passed on costs to consumers or others.”

Drones are increasingly violating American airspace. We know that tens of thousands of drone sightings on our southern border are connected with the Mexican drug and human trafficking cartels.

But dozens of other drone sightings at sensitive military installations suggest hostile nation-state actors, most likely China.

As drone operations in Russia’s war on Ukraine show, the threat is no longer hypothetical — it is active and escalating. Unfortunately, a dangerous combination of bureaucratic inertia and misplaced priorities has left our borders and military installations vulnerable.

In December 2023, Langley Air Force Base in Virginia endured 17 consecutive nights of drone incursions, some involving craft up to 20 feet in length.

Despite clear sightings and briefings that reached the White House, proposals to jam signals, deploy directed energy weapons, or shoot the drones down were rejected as “too risky.”

To this day, no official explanation has been provided, and no one has been held accountable.

In New Jersey, 11 months later, drones were reported over Picatinny Arsenal, a 6,400-acre U.S. Army research and manufacturing facility, as well as over Naval Weapons Station Earle.

After weeks of public alarm and official confusion, then-Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said, “I want to assure the American public that we in the federal government have deployed additional resources, personnel, technology to assist the New Jersey State Police in addressing the drone sightings.”

He went on to ambiguously remark, “Some of those drone sightings are, in fact, drones …”

By Dec. 16, five weeks before Donald J. Trump was sworn in for his second term, the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Aviation Administration, and Department of Defense issued a statement, disclaiming any threat, noting that the sitings were of “… lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and stars mistakenly reported as drones.”

Yet Stewart International Airport, 60 miles north of New York City, shut down due to the perceived drone threat, while the FAA issued temporary flight restrictions over Picatinny Arsenal and Bedminster, New Jersey, suggesting that something was amiss.

Eventually, federal officials attributed most incidents to lawful commercial drones and misidentified aircraft. Public fears subsided.

To show you how ridiculous the opinion is, the Court said that I’m not allowed to charge even $1 DOLLAR to any Country under IEEPA, I assume to protect other Countries, not the United States which they should be interested in protecting — But I am allowed to cut off any and all Trade or Business with that same Country, even imposing a Foreign Country destroying embargo, and do anything else I want to do to them — How nonsensical is that? They are saying that I have the absolute right to license, but not the right to charge a license fee. What license has ever been issued without the right to charge a fee? In actuality, while I am sure they did not mean to do so, the Supreme Court’s decision today made a President’s ability to both regulate Trade, and impose TARIFFS, more powerful and crystal clear, rather than less. There will no longer be any doubt, and the Income coming in, and the protection of our Companies and Country, will actually increase because of this decision. Based on longstanding Law and Hundreds of Victories to the contrary, the Supreme Court did not overrule TARIFFS, they merely overruled a particular use of IEEPA TARIFFS. The ability to block, embargo, restrict, license, or impose any other condition on a Foreign Country’s ability to conduct Trade with the United States under IEEPA, has been fully confirmed by this decision. In order to protect our Country, a President can actually charge more TARIFFS than I was charging in the past under the various other TARIFF authorities, which have also been confirmed, and fully allowed.

Therefore, effective immediately, all National Security TARIFFS, Section 232 and existing Section 301 TARIFFS, remain in place, and in full force and effect. Today I will sign an Order to impose a 10% GLOBAL TARIFF, under Section 122, over and above our normal TARIFFS already being charged, and we are also initiating several Section 301 and other Investigations to protect our Country from unfair Trading practices. The Supreme Court’s Ruling on TARIFFS is deeply disappointing! I am ashamed of certain Members of the Court for not having the Courage to do what is right for our Country. I would like to thank and congratulate Justices Thomas, Alito, and Kavanaugh for your Strength, Wisdom, and Love of our Country, which is right now very proud of you. When you read the dissenting opinions, there is no way that anyone can argue against them. Foreign Countries that have been ripping us off for years are ecstatic, and dancing in the streets — But they won’t be dancing for long! The Democrats on the Court are thrilled, but they will automatically vote “NO” against ANYTHING that makes America Strong and Healthy Again. They, also, are a Disgrace to our Nation. Others think they’re being “politically correct,” which has happened before, far too often, with certain Members of this Court when, in fact, they’re just FOOLS and “LAPDOGS” for the RINOS and Radical Left Democrats and, not that this should have anything to do with it, very unpatriotic, and disloyal to the Constitution. It is my opinion that the Court has been swayed by Foreign Interests, and a Political Movement that is far smaller than people would think — But obnoxious, ignorant, and loud!

This was an important case to me, more as a symbol of Economic and National Security, than anything else. The Good News is that there are methods, practices, Statutes, and other Authorities, as recognized by the entire Court and Congress, that are even stronger than the IEEPA TARIFFS, available to me as President of the United States of America and, in actuality, I was very modest in my “ask” of other Countries and Businesses because I wanted to do nothing that could sway the decision that has been rendered by the Court.

I have very effectively utilized TARIFFS over the past year to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Our Stock Market has just recently broken the 50,000 mark on the DOW and, simultaneously, 7,000 on the S&P, two numbers that everybody thought, upon our Landslide Election Victory, could not be attained until the very end of my Administration — Four years! TARIFFS have, likewise, been used to end five of the eight Wars that I settled, have given us Great National Security and, together with our Strong Border, reduced Fentanyl coming into our Country by 30%, when I use them as a penalty against Countries illegally sending this poison to us. All of those TARIFFS remain, but other alternatives will now be used to replace the ones that the Court incorrectly rejected.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been in government since the 1990s after completing his work in special services. These leaders are all political heavyweights in their own way and never show stress in public. Those without this kind of background have a tough time.

President Donald Trump has issued a statement that he will instruct the federal government to begin releasing all of its files related to UFOs, or UAP, as they're now known.

Just days after former president Barack Obama told podcast host Brian Tyler Cohen that he saw "no evidence" of alien life or a conspiracy to hide it while in office, Trump took to social media to make the announcement.

"Based on the tremendous interest shown, I will be directing the Secretary of War, and other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and any and all information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important matters," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

While many believers are hailing the announcement as another step toward disclosure, more skeptical observers point out that this is not the first time Trump has made similar promises,, nor is it the first time members of the federal government have called for the release of UFO files specifically.

Will this finally be the time we learn what alien skeletons are in the U.S. government's closet? Don't count on it.

The move from Trump follows many of the promises his administration campaigned on, including promising greater transparency from the federal government.

Trump's administration has even gone so far as to call itself "the most transparent administration in history" in promotional videos on the White House website.

To that end, Trump has previously promised to release U.S. government files about some of the most conspiracy-theory-laden topics out there.

Just last year, for example, Trump issued an executive order calling for the release of all of the files the U.S. government has on the assassinations of President John. F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In November 2025, Trump also signed into law the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which called for the release of all unclassified records and documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, the financier indicted in 2019 for child sex trafficking.

But longtime observers point out that those moves by Trump came up short in terms of what was promised.

"Even if an official declassification order is issued regarding UAP/UFOs, what we learn from past releases like the JFK files and, more recently, Department of Justice files related to Jeffrey Epstein, is that much of the documentation will likely be released with significant redactions," Micah Hanks, a longtime researcher into the history of UFOs with relation to the U.S. intelligence community, told Space.com.

"Further, some of the documentation may still be withheld altogether, based on national security concerns, which we have also observed in past releases."

Today, the Supreme Court decided that Congress, despite giving the president the ability to "regulate imports", didn't actually mean it. This is lawlessness from the Court, plain and simple. And its only effect will be to make it harder for the president to protect American industries and supply chain resiliency.

Just hours after President Donald Trump called for the release of UFO files, a top-secret Air Force jet was spotted near Area 51 on Friday morning.

Flight tracking data shows a Boeing 737-600, known as 'Janet,' departing from Harry Reid International Airport, Las Vegas's main airport, at 4.06am PT (7.06am ET).

The jet headed toward the Tonopah Test Range, an area closely linked to Area 51 within Nevada’s Nellis Range Complex. Both highly classified sites are testing secret aircraft and advanced weapons.

Area 51 has long been rumored to host crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft and other mysterious technologies, leading some to speculate that Friday's flight may be tied to Trump's announcement.

The president directed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to release government files related to aliens and UFOs after criticizing former President Barack Obama for allegedly confirming their existence on a podcast.

Area 51 has fueled decades of speculation, particularly since the Cold War, when its remote desert location and secret operations made it a natural target for UFO rumors.

The US government has acknowledged the base exists but says it is used for testing advanced military aircraft.

Janet jets are the primary mode of transport, designed by Boeing, white with a single red stripe running from nose to tail, and operating from a dedicated terminal since the remote facility cannot be accessed by regular vehicles.

The base has six runways for Janet planes, including a massive 12,000-foot strip, among the longest in the world, capable of handling flights to and from Las Vegas under tight security.

Trump made his announcement just hours after lashing out at Barack Obama for allegedly sharing classified information when he appeared to confirm that aliens exist while speaking on a podcast.

He told reporters on his way to Georgia that Obama was 'not supposed' to share classified information after he appeared on Brian Tyler Cohen's podcast and said aliens were 'real.'

Obama added, 'They're real, but I haven't seen them,' joking that they are not kept at Area 51 as far as he knows.
