Italy denies use of Sicily airbase to US planes carrying weapons for Iran war

Defence ministry says US failed to request authorisation in time for parliament to give approval as required by international treaty

Italy has denied the use of an airbase in Sicily to US military planes carrying weapons for the war in Iran after the US did not follow the required authorisation procedure.

A source at the Italian defence ministry confirmed a report in Corriere della Sera that “some US bombers” had been due to land at Sigonella – one of seven US navy bases in Italy – before heading to the Middle East, but that use of the base had been denied because the US sought authorisation to land only while the aircraft were already en route to Sicily.

The source said this meant there was not enough time to seek approval in parliament, as is required for aircraft landing on naval bases with weapons.

According to treaties established in the late 1950s, the US navy bases can be used for logistical and training purposes but not as transit hubs for aircraft used to transport weapons for war unless in an emergency situation.

The office of Italy’s far-right prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, issued a statement on Tuesday denying that the move – which comes a day after Spain ramped up its opposition to the US-Israeli war on Iran by closing its airspace to US aircraft involved in attacks – had caused “critical issues or frictions” with international partners, and said relations with the US were “solid and based on full and loyal cooperation”.

In another sign of rising tensions between the US and some European countries, Donald Trump criticised France on Tuesday because it “wouldn’t let planes headed to Israel, loaded up with military supplies, fly over French territory”, writing on his Truth Social account that the country had been “VERY UNHELPFUL”.

Regarding the use of its military bases, the statement from Meloni’s office said Italy was “acting in full compliance with existing international agreements” and parliamentary procedures and that each request was “carefully examined on a case-by-case basis, as has always been the case in the past”.

In Italy, where there is a deep-rooted anti-war culture, opinion polls consistently show very strong opposition to the conflict and strong dislike towards Trump. The unpopularity of Trump in Italy has also started to erode the popularity of Meloni, who is ideologically in tune with the US president and has established good working relations with him.

Opposition parties have for weeks been urging the government to block the US from using Italy’s bases for involvement in the Middle East conflict.

Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement, said Italy had “a duty” to deny the US bombers access to Sigonella and now needed to “take a further step” and deny the logistical support offered at all the country’s bases since the US-Israeli conflict in Iran was being carried out “in clear violation of international law”.

Earlier this month, Meloni strongly criticised the US-Israeli military strikes, telling parliament that it was part of a growing and dangerous trend of interventions “outside the scope of international law”.

At the same time, she said “we cannot afford a regime of ayatollahs in possession of nuclear weapons combined with a missile capacity” that could threaten Italy and Europe. Meloni has said several times that Italy would not enter the war, although the country has provided defensive assets to Gulf countries.

Anger in Sicily has been swirling for weeks owing to increased activity at the Sigonella base since the start of the conflict, and especially after the US navy shared a photo on its Instagram account earlier this month showing a US military helicopter landing at the Unesco-listed Madonie natural park close to Palermo during a training exercise.

“Sicily does not want and will not contribute to any war,” said Nuccio Di Paola, a Five Star Movement politician in Sicily. “Sicily is a land of peace and must remain so … we cannot allow Sicilians to be put at risk because of our country’s subservience to other countries.”

The mother of slain college student Sheridan Gorman is speaking out, vowing a "fight for justice" after the 18-year-old was allegedly murdered by an illegal immigrant earlier this month in Chicago.

Jessica Gorman delivered emotional remarks Saturday at a vigil in Yorktown Heights, New York, honoring her daughter, a Loyola University Chicago freshman whose life was cut short in what authorities describe as a sudden, violent attack.

"I want to say this gently, but honestly, as a mom. I'm angry," Jessica Gorman said. "I'm like completely heartbroken, and we are going to fight for justice for our sweet Sheridan, and we're going to fight for change."

While acknowledging that "not everyone" will see the situation the same way, Jessica Gorman underscored what she described as a universal truth shared by parents.

"At the heart of all of this, we all want the same thing — for your children and for ours to be safe, to be protected, and to come home," Jessica Gorman said. "Because, at the end of the day, that's what this is all about. All of our kids, every single one of them, protecting them, loving them, showing up for them. And that is how we honor her."

Sheridan Gorman, a New York native, was killed at around 1:06 a.m. March 19 while with friends near a pier in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood.

Officials allege Jose Medina-Medina, 25, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, fired one shot at the Loyola University Chicago student, killing her.

Gorman was reportedly only a few months away from completing her freshman year.

Medina-Medina was apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol on May 9, 2023, and was released into the U.S. under the Biden administration, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

At the vigil, the family’s attorney, Thomas Tripodianos, warned against what he described as growing complacency about public safety.

"If we accept this, even silently, then we are accepting a reality where young people are not as safe as they should be. And that is not acceptable," Tripodianos said. "And there must be justice. Real justice."

The Gorman family has sharply criticized Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, arguing that their daughter’s death "demands accountability."

"She was doing something entirely normal — walking near her campus with friends. She should be here," the Gorman family said regarding comments by Johnson.

The suspect appeared in court Friday and was ordered to remain in custody, according to FOX 32 Chicago.

He faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a gun.

Abstract

Background: Drug repurposing offers a pathway to identify accessible, low-toxicity cancer therapies. Ivermectin and mebendazole have demonstrated multi-target anti-cancer activity in preclinical models, including the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation and the targeting of cancer stem cells. This paper evaluates real-world patient-reported outcomes, safety, and adherence in a cohort of cancer patients utilizing this combination protocol.

Methods: We analyzed a prospective observational cohort of 197 cancer patients who were prescribed ivermectin and mebendazole off-label through a telemedicine platform by licensed U.S. healthcare providers. Participants received compounded oral capsules containing 25 mg ivermectin and 250 mg mebendazole. As part of a clinical program evaluation, data were collected via voluntary, standardized digital surveys at baseline and at approximately 6-month follow-up. Of the initial cohort (N = 197), baseline characteristics, including cancer type and disease status, were assessed. A total of 122 participants completed the follow-up survey (61.9% response rate) to evaluate self-reported cancer outcomes, medication adherence, and adverse events. 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for primary outcome measures using the Wilson score method. Dose-stratified analyses for outcomes and safety were conducted using Chi-square statistics.

Results: The cohort represented a diverse clinical profile of cancer patients, with mean age of 67 years and nearly balanced sex distribution (52.3% male, 47.7% female). Cancer types included prostate (27.9%), breast (18.3%), lung (8.6%), colon (5.1%), urologic (4.6%), pancreatic (3.0%), liver (2.5%), gynecologic (2.5%), and hematologic (2.5%) malignancies. At enrollment, participants had a median duration since initial diagnosis of 1.2 years, with 37.1% experiencing active disease progression. At 6-month follow-up, medication adherence was high with 86.9% of participants completing the full initial 90-capsule ivermectin-mebendazole prescription and 66.4% remaining on the protocol at 6 months. The Clinical Benefit Ratio (CBR) was 84.4% (95% CI: 77.0–89.8%). Notably, 48.4% (95% CI: 39.7–57.1%) of the cohort reported the strongest positive outcomes, consisting of regression (15.6%; 95% CI: 10.2–23.0%) or no current evidence of disease (NED, 32.8%; 95% CI: 25.1–41.5%). Disease stability was reported to be maintained in 36.1% (95% CI: 28.1–44.9%) of participants, while 15.6% (95% CI: 10.2–23.0%) reported disease progression. While 25.4% reported mild side effects (primarily gastrointestinal), 93.6% of those affected continued treatment through minor dose adjustments. Some participants reported concurrent conventional therapies, including chemotherapy (27.9%), radiation therapy (21.3%), and surgery (19.7%), as well as adjunctive interventions such as supplement use (49.2%), dietary modification (37.7%), and other integrative approaches.

Conclusions: In this prospective real-world cohort, the combination of ivermectin and mebendazole was associated with high rates of self-reported clinical benefit, with nearly half of participants reporting tumor regression or no current evidence of disease across a heterogeneous population of cancer patients. These findings provide a compelling clinical signal that these well-tolerated, repurposed agents may offer therapeutic benefit. However, given the observational design, reliance on self-reported outcomes, and potential for selection bias and uncontrolled confounding, these findings should be interpreted as hypothesis-generating. Urgent prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials are warranted to validate these observations and further define optimal dosing strategies.

IMF Warns Australia Set For One Of Highest Inflation Rates In Developed World

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says Australia is on track to have one of the highest inflation rates in the developed world.

In the latest edition of its World Economic Outlook, the global lender said economies around the world “face repercussions [from] the direct impact of higher commodity prices, indirect second-order effects on inflation expectations—which tend to be especially sensitive to energy and food prices—and amplification effects coming from [conservative] sentiment in financial markets.”

While the global economy had withstood “a series of shocks, yet another one—this time a military conflict engulfing the Middle East since the end of February—is testing this resilience,” the IMF warned.

It predicted that Australia’s GDP growth would remain flat this year at 2025’s level of 2.0 percent and would fall in 2027 to 1.7 percent.

Those figures are lower than previously projected, down from 2.1 percent for this year and 2.2 percent for next.

While that will be a consideration as Treasurer Jim Chalmers drafts his next budget for delivery on May 12, even more alarming is the forecast for inflation, with the consumer price index at 4.0 percent this year and 3.2 percent in 2027.

Those inflation figures exceed those of most advanced economies, including the United States (3.2 percent in 2026 and 2.1 in 2027), the UK (3.2 and 2.4), Germany (2.7 and 2.3), New Zealand (3.1 and 2.3), Japan (2.2 and 2.3),

Australia’s unemployment is also expected to be stubborn, at 4.2 and 4.3 percent respectively.

IMF Calls for Less State Intervention in Economy

Prior to the outbreak of the Iran War the IMF had intended to revise its growth forecasts upwards, but the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on oil and gas facilities reversed the positive momentum and raised the prospect of a major energy crisis, according to IMF chief economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas in a press briefing.

Under a “severe” scenario, in which an extended conflict results in greater damage to energy infrastructure, global growth would fall to 2 percent in 2026 and be perilously close to a global recession.

“What should we avoid?” Gourinchas asked.

“Price caps, subsidies, and similar interventions are popular, but they distort prices. They’re often poorly designed, hard to unwind, and extremely costly,” he said.

Lauren Bullis served in multiple roles at DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG). She served as an Auditor in the Office of Audits and as a Team Leader in the Office of Innovation. In every role she held, Lauren exemplified dedication to the OIG mission. Lauren approached her work with integrity, thoughtfulness, and a commitment to excellence that strengthened our organization and the communities we serve. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Lauren was a bright spot for so many of the DHS community. She brought warmth, kindness, and a genuine sense of care to her colleagues each day.

“On Monday, a DHS employee, Lauren Bullis, was brutally shot and stabbed to death by Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a 26-year-old, born in the United Kingdom, who was naturalized by the Biden Administration in 2022. Since President Trump took office, USCIS has implemented measures to ensure individuals with criminal histories and who otherwise lack good moral character do not attain citizenship,” said DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. “He has also been arrested for the murder of an unidentified woman whom he reportedly shot outside a Checkers, before randomly shooting a homeless man multiple times outside a Kroger in Brookhaven. In an effort to remove murderers like this from our communities, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced the creation of a new vetting center on December 5, 2025, to enhance screening and vetting of immigration applications, with a focus on identifying terrorists, criminal aliens, and other threats to public safety. The center will leverage advanced technologies and work closely with law enforcement and intelligence partners to strengthen national security and uphold the integrity of the U.S. immigration system.

Pursuant to long-neglected statutory authority, USCIS also restored the practice of conducting neighborhood investigations of potential new citizens. The purpose of a neighborhood investigation is to verify aliens’ eligibility for naturalization by reviewing their residency, moral character, loyalty to the U.S. Constitution, and commitment to the nation’s well-being. These investigations are vital to maintaining the integrity of the naturalization process, assuring assimilation, and safeguarding the value of American citizenship. The US is in discussions on staging a second round of peace talks with Iran, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said.

The first direct meeting between the sides since the US-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28 took place in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, at the weekend, but delivered no breakthrough. Tehran blamed the failure of the negotiations on Washington’s “unrealistic demands,” while the US reacted by announcing a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz for Iran-linked vessels.

Speaking about the possibility of another round of talks during a briefing on Wednesday, Leavitt notedthat “those discussions are being had, but nothing is official until you hear it from the White House.”

“We feel good about the prospects of a deal... and it’s obviously in the best interest of Iran to meet the president’s demands,”she added.

The talks “would very likely be in the same place as they were last time,” the spokeswoman said, referring to Islamabad.

“The Pakistanis have been incredible mediators throughout this process and we really appreciate their friendship and their efforts to bring this deal to a close,” Leavitt stressed.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated on Wednesday that Tehran “is not seeking war and instability,instead, it has always emphasized the importance of dialogue and constructive interaction with all countries of the world.”

“However, any attempt to impose any will on the country or force it to surrender is doomed to fail and the Iranian nation will never cave in to such an approach,” he stressed.

US President Donald Trump told the New York Post on Tuesday that new talks with Tehran “could be happening over the next two days.” In a separate interview with Fox News,he suggested that the conflict is “very close to being over.”

On Wednesday, Pakistani Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb saidthe country’s leadership “is not giving up” on efforts to help achieve a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to put nukes in space to spread chaos across the globe, a US space chief has warned.

The head of US Space Command, General Stephen Whiting, warned that America was "very concerned" about the Kremlin's apparent plans to become a threat in space.

He revealed that Russia was considering launching a "nuclear anti-satellite weapon" into orbit that could have a catastrophic impact on the Earth.

The use of a nuclear weapon at low orbit could destroy thousands of satellites, which could plunge air travel, GPS services and communications into chaos. Putin's terrifying plot could amount to a "space Pearl Harbor".

A nuclear bomb going off between 300 and 1,200 miles above earth could ruin as much as 80% of the satellites in space. While an act like this would be a major setback for the military it could also plunge normal life into mayhem.

The space chief, speaking to The Times, said: "Russia remains a sophisticated space power and they continue to invest in counter-space weapons.

"They are thinking about placing in orbit a nuclear anti-satellite weapon that would hold at risk everyone’s satellites in low Earth orbit, and that would be an outcome that we just couldn't tolerate."

For example, many internet and mobile connections are reliant on the technology in space. The US space chief said most of Russia's work in space has been focused on military targets, for example jamming western satellites to try and impact help for Ukraine in Putin's illegal and deadly invasion. An example of this is GPS jamming.

A successful expungement resolution would substantiate Trump’s claims that the impeachments were illegitimate “hoaxes” driven by political malice and "lawfare."

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary, has disclosed to Just The News that the House of Representatives, where President Donald Trump was impeached during his first term over a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, is moving to expunge that impeachment from the congressional record.

"You need a majority vote, we need a bill, and it's actually something we're looking at," Jordan told Just The News.

Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons submitted his resignation letter to Homeland SecretaryMarkwayne Mullin Thursday, writing that he will stay on through May 31 to assist the transition process, Fox News has confirmed.

According to a source, Lyons said in his letterhe wants to spend more time with his family, including his sons, who are "reaching a pivotal point in their lives," and that it's been a privilege to serve under President Donald Trump.

"Director Lyons has been a great leader of ICE and key player in helping the Trump administration remove murderers, rapists, pedophiles, terrorists and gang members from American communities," Mullin said in a statement.

"He jumpstarted an agency that had not been allowed to do its job for four years. Thanks to his leadership, American communities are safer."

Lyons has overseen roughly 584,000 ICE deportations since President Donald Trump was inaugurated for a second term last year.

He has served with ICE for 20 years and was previously in special forces in the U.S. Air Force.

"We wish him luck on his next opportunity in the private sector. His last day is May 31, 2026," Mullin concluded.

In a statement to Fox News, Trump border czar Tom Homan praised Lyons' selflessness in serving as director.

"Todd has served selflessly as a highly respected and effective acting Director of U.S. ICE," Homan said. "Under his leadership, ICE achieved a record number of removals in the first year of this Administration, despite unprecedented challenges, delivering on the President’s promise to deport illegal aliens who have no right to be in the U.S., especially those that are public safety risks or pose a threat to our national security.

"I commend him for a distinguished law enforcement career and the countless contributions he has made to protect our country and advance its interests.

White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller added in a statement to Fox News that, "Todd is a phenomenal patriot and dedicated leader who has been at the center of President Trump’s historic efforts to secure our homeland and reverse the Democrats’ sinister border invasion."

Police investigate bomb threat at the home of Pope Leo's brother

The incident comes amid a brewing feud between President Donald Trump and the first American pontiff over the war with Iran.

The Illinois home of one of Pope Leo XIV’s brothers was the target of a bomb threat, which was found to be unsubstantiated, police said Thursday.

The report came in at around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. New Lenox police said they initiallyresponded to the bomb threat at the home of John Prevost, one of Leo's older brothers, located about 40 miles southwest of Chicago.

Police officers secured a perimeter around the house and surrounding homes were evacuated out of an abundance of caution, New Lenox police said in a news release Wednesday. They conducted "a thorough search of the residence and surrounding property," alongside specialized units that use explosive detection K9s, and determined the threat was "unsubstantiated and that no explosive devices or hazardous materials were present."

No one was injured and evacuated residents were allowed to safely return to their homes afterward.

New Lenox Police Chief Micah D. Nuesse told NBC News in an email Thursday that an investigation to determine the origin of the report remains "active and ongoing."

NBC News reached out to Prevost on Thursday, but did not immediately hear back.

New Lenox police warned in their news release Wednesday that "making false reports of this nature is a serious offense and may result in criminal charges" and encouraged anyone with information about the incident to contact their office.

The incident comes amid an escalating feud between Leo and President Donald Trump over the first American pontiff’s criticism of the war with Iran.

It remains unclear whether the reported bomb threat is connected to any of these recent statements.

The feud began growing Sunday when Trump lashed out at Leo, calling him "WEAK on crime" and “terrible for Foreign Policy” following the pope's criticism of the war. Leo then responded by saying he has “no fear of the Trump administration" and vowed to keep up his appeals for peace that he said were rooted in the Gospel.

Trump then published a now-deleted social media post of an AI-generated image of himself as a Christ-like savior after the president said he's "not a big fan of Pope Leo."

Leo is in the middle of an 11-day trip through North Africa to honor his spiritual forefather,St. Augustine, who preached that war was only justified to protect the innocent.

During a visit to a care home in the Algerian port city of Annaba on Tuesday, Leo said. “God’s heart is torn apart by wars, violence, injustice and lies.”

He added, “Our Father’s heart is not with the wicked, the arrogant or the proud.”

“The Twin Metals team looks forward to a robust discussion and engagement with our communities through any future regulatory processes,” Graul added.

Republicans who pushed the resolution lauded the result.The change went forward under the Congressional Review Act procedure that allows Congress to undo new executive rulemakings by a simple majority vote. It cleared the House in January.

“A major victory for America and Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District was secured today,” Rep. Pete Stauber, R-Minn., said in a post to X. “The Senate just passed my bill to reverse Biden’s illegal mining ban in the Superior National Forest – it’s now headed to the President’s desk!”

The vote came over the objection of Democrats and two Republicans, Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Susan Collins of Maine, who warned of irreparable harm to the Boundary Waters and irregular use of the Congressional Review Act that could come back to bite the now-majority Republicans if Democrats control the Senate.

The Boundary Waters was established as a federal wilderness area by a 1978 law. Motorized boats and other vehicles are mostly prohibited on the nearly 2,000 lakes spanning 1.1 million acres in northeastern Minnesota bordering Canada.

Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., the ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said the vote was a “dark day” and a “stain” on the Senate.

“I can tell you, as somebody who has been a natural resources trustee, who has had to negotiate with copper companies in my own state, that this type of copper mining has never been done without polluting the water. Never, not once,” he said in a floor speech before the vote. “So we’re guaranteeing that we’re going to pollute the Boundary Waters.”

The resolution was also passed over the objections of the Minnesota Senate delegation, Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, who are both Democrats.

“You can support mining, but that does not mean that you support every mine in every place,” Smith said. “Whatever the outcome of this vote this afternoon, we will not stop fighting, and we will not stop our work to protect the Boundary Waters.”

Messier 82 is a starburst galaxy with a superwind. In fact, through supernova explosions and powerful winds from massive stars, the burst of star formation in M82 is driving a prodigious outflow. Evidence for the superwind from the galaxy's central regions is clear in the sharp telescopic portrait. The composite image includes 33 hours of narrowband data, highlighting emission from long outflow filaments of atomic hydrogen gas in reddish hues. Some of the gas in the superwind, enriched in heavy elements forged in the massive stars, will eventually escape into intergalactic space. Triggered by a close encounter with nearby large galaxy M81, the furious burst of star formation in M82 should last about 100 million years or so. Also known as the Cigar Galaxy for its elongated visual appearance, M82 is about 30,000 light-years across. It lies 12 million light-years away near the northern boundary of Ursa Major.

Police are investigating a security incident near the Israeli embassy in London afterofficers found a number of discarded items in Kensington Gardens.

Counter Terrorism Policing London said it is aware of a video shared online in which agroup claims to have targeted the embassy with drones carrying hazardous substances.

Police said the embassy had not been attacked and that urgent inquiries are under way to assess the authenticity of the video and any link to the items found.
