Maurene Comey’s lawsuit against DOJ over her firing can proceed, judge rules

NEW YORK — Maurene Comey can pursue her lawsuit against the Justice Department for her abrupt termination as aManhattan federal prosecutor, a federal judge ruled Tuesday, handing her a significant victory against the department.

Lawyers for the department had argued that Comey needed to bring her claims before the Merit Systems Protection Board, an executive branch agency that oversees federal workers’ complaints alleging violations of civil service laws. Comey’s lawyers argued that would have doomed her case.

U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman wrote in a 27-page opinion thatbecause Comey was fired pursuant to Article II of the Constitution, rather than the Civil Service Reform Act, her lawsuit should remain in federal court.

“The Court finds that Comey’s claims are not of the type Congress intended to be reviewed within that schemebecause it would deprive her of meaningful judicial review, her claims are wholly collateral to the CSRA’s review provisions, and her claims— which raise fundamental constitutional questions — fall outside of the MSPB’s traditional expertise,” Furman wrote.

Comey’s firing last summer sent shock waves through the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office, where she had served as one of the most prominent federal prosecutors in the country for nearly 10 years, handling cases including those against Jeffrey Epstein, his co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell and Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Comey, the daughter of former FBI director and longtime Trump foe James Comey, was given no explanation for her firing. She has alleged in court filings that her termination occurred “solely or substantially because her father is former FBI Director James B. Comey, or because of her perceived political affiliation and beliefs, or both.”

A lawyer for Comey, Ellen Blain, said Tuesday that “we are thrilled” with Furman’s decision.

“No president can ignore the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and federal law and fire a career federal employee based solely on her last name,” she added. “We look forward to continuing to vindicate Ms. Comey’s constitutional rights and protect our civil service.”

A spokesperson for DOJ declined to comment.

A King County program manager who ran a taxpayer-funded racial equity initiative steered more than $800,000 in grant money to five of her own family members over five years, according to a county investigation, adding to mounting scrutiny over financial controls in the region’s human services and homelessness bureaucracy.

According to the Seattle Times, Yolanda McGhee, who managed Liberation and Healing from Systemic Racism, known as Liberated Village, was fired in January for what the county called serious policy violations. The $10 million initiative was housed in the King County Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS), which has already faced criticism over lax oversight of billions in grant spending.

Between 2022 and 2025, Liberated Village distributed more than $10 million through 19 contracts. During that period, money flowed to companies owned by McGhee’s daughter, two brothers, a cousin, and a sister-in-law, according to a county investigation obtained by The Seattle Times through a public records request.

County officials reportedly first received a warning in 2020, when a former contractor employee emailed multiple county workers accusing McGhee of a “glaring conflict of interest” involving her daughter’s work. No one followed up. Staff later told investigators the pandemic had made the department too chaotic to act.

Three years later, DCHS leaders independently discovered a contractor link to McGhee’s daughter and brought it to the county’s Ethics Program. Officials concluded it was not a conflict, in part because McGhee claimed she did not influence her daughter’s hiring.

A month later, managers found McGhee had submitted a $9,999 payment for one of her brothers, one dollar below the threshold that typically triggers competitive bidding. The payment was canceled, but officials did not reassign McGhee’s work or investigate further.

The allegations went beyond undisclosed family payments. Three contractors told investigators that McGhee pressured them to hire or subcontract with her daughter’s company. Two contractors also alleged she pushed to remove two Latino consultants from the program because it was intended to “uplift black and brown scholars,” with one claiming McGhee said on a program call, “They look too white.”

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) reported the government grants in its latest tax filing covering July 2024 through June 2025, the month that Los Angeles, California, was set ablaze by anti-deportation rioters. The chaos kicked off in June 2025 after CHIRLA created an anti-ICE network that led to a union leader’s arrest and encouraged supporters to arrive at a federal building for a rally that turned violent, the Daily Caller News Foundation previously reported. CHIRLA defended the mob as rioting against deportations spread across central California for days and caused damages somewhere between $32 million and $1 billion, according to local and federal agencies.

House and Senate lawmakers responded by announcing investigations into CHIRLA that have produced no findings or legislative reforms as leftists use the tax-exempt nonprofit system to fund radical causes. The House Judiciary Committee and Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri sent CHIRLA letters in June demanding records of its finances and internal communications.

There have been no reports of CHIRLA handing over the information, and lawmakers have announced no further action. The House Judiciary Committee did not threaten a subpoena if CHIRLA ignored its requests, while Hawley threatened “potential referral for criminal investigation.” The IRS and First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli did not respond to the requests for comment about a probe they announced last year into the anti-ICE riots, while the FBI’s Los Angeles office declined to comment.

CHIRLA’s $8,726,683 from taxpayers in fiscal year 2024 made up 35% of its total revenue, according to its records. CHIRLA has received more than $80.6 million in government grants since former President Joe Biden took office and opened the U.S. border to historic illegal immigration, tax filings show.

The bulk of the US gold reserves held in Fort Knox are made up of impure “non-standard” bars that don’t qualify for use in international settlements. In practice, this means that most of America’s massive gold stockpile is illiquid and wouldn’t be readily accepted on the international market should the need arise:

“It’s a decrepit relic just like our monetary policy is. With respect to America’s gold stockpile, we hold ourselves to a lower standard than the rest of the world,” Money Metals CEO Stefan Gleason said.

The French central bank recently sold 129 tonnes of similar non-standard gold that was stored in New York and replaced it with higher-quality bars that will remain in France.

Notwithstanding the lack of any credible physical audits for decades, US gold reserves are reported to be 8,133.5 metric tons. That’s roughly 261.5 million troy ounces. About half of that (147.3 million ounces according to the US Mint) is stored at Fort Knox. The rest is spread out between the Denver Mint, the West Point Bullion Depository, and the Federal Reserve vault in New York.

America’s gold is valued at $42.22 per ounce by statute. The price does not fluctuate with market movements.

According to the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), gold bars must contain 350 to 430 fine troy ounces and have a minimum fineness of 995.0 parts per thousand to be acceptable for international settlements. In fact, the “good delivery” standards across the globe have been transitioning to 0.9999 purity.

Based on documents released during a 2011 House Committee on Financial Services Hearing, however, we find only around 17 percent of the gold bars held by the US government in Fort Knox meet any modern-day purity standards.

Here’s a breakdown of the purity of the gold bars held in Fort Knox:

Fineness between 899 and 901 – 64 percent

Fineness between 901.1 and 915.4 – 2 percent

Fineness between 915.5 and .917 – 17 percent

Fineness of 0.995 or higher – 17 percent

The average purity of US gold reserves is 916.7

Keep in mind, we’re operating on guesswork here because the US government’s gold holdings have not been audited since at least the 1970s.

In 1974, the government put together a publicity stunt in the name of an audit. The US Treasury opened just one of its 15 Fort Knox vault compartments to politicians and reporters to view the gold and confirm its existence.

That’s been called an audit. However, none of the bars that were passed around were ever matched to a serial number, assayed or tested for purity, or even verified as part of the United States’ holdings. As Sound Money Defense League Director Matthew Cortez pointed out, “It seems the made-for-TV spectacle in 1974 was more of a pep rally than any credible proof of what the amount of US gold purported to be in those vaults.”

Following the 1974 publicity stunt, the US Treasury says it conducted a multi-year process of opening and inventorying vault compartments and affixing new tamper-evident seals to the doors of each compartment upon completion. However, these so-called audits failed to meet basic transparency or accounting standards.

Some reports have since gone missing, and there is no record of comprehensive assaying, weighing, or transactional history available to the public.

Furthermore, there is evidence that seals on vault compartments have been broken over the years, bars have been moved for unknown reasons, and seals have been re-affixed without fresh auditing. Subsequent annual reviews of the schedules of compartment seals serve only to whitewash the prior discrepancies.

In sum, the US Treasury’s management of US gold reserves is replete with audit “no-nos” that would never pass muster at a responsibly run private depository.

An “audit the gold” bill introduced by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) last year would not only require a comprehensive audit of US gold reserves, including, importantly, an accounting of any transactions involving said gold. It would also require the Treasury to refine all non-standard bars so that they meet modern requirements for international settlements—a process that could take several years.

The question is not whether the Sunrise Movement pulled a trigger.

=The question is why Allen’s reported “Wide Awakes” link is being treated as some obscure cultural breadcrumbwhenSunrise Movement itself has spent years attaching that phrase to a concrete left-wing protest tactic.

The page documented Sunrise’s use of “Wide Awake” actions against political targets. The head of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency claims the organization has infiltrated activities in both Iran and Lebanon and gathered “valuable intelligence.”

In comments made on Tuesday, David Barnea said Mossad had secured both strategic and tactical intelligence gains, including access to what he described as highly sensitive enemy information. He also said the agency has shown new and previously unseen operational capabilities inside targeted states.

Barnea said Mossad has evolved into a more proactive and offensive force during wartime. He noted that in the past, its activities were supposedly mainly focused on covert operations between wars.

He added that this shift has been evident in actions directed at Iran and Lebanon, supported by the establishment of new units and specialized capabilities in recent years, along with increased use of advanced technologies and broader innovation across its operations.

New Onboard Capability to Enable Autonomous Spacecraft Operations

Imagine what a mission could accomplish if it were possible to put the combined expertise of the science and operations teams onboard a spacecraft.

It could detect events and then use that information to determine its next actions in real time without input from humans. Event-driven autonomous operations will be key to a new class of missions that could accomplish amazing things—from traversing subterranean caves on Mars, to unlocking the secrets of turbulence in the solar wind, to exploring under the ice of Europa.

Mission operations engineers face the daunting tasks of maintaining the health and functionality of a spacecraft and its payload, capturing high-value data, and responding to a dynamically evolving environment.

They must plan activities days or weeks into the future using very limited information. These tasks become even more complicated when one factors in the lengthy time between spacecraft contacts, the light-time delay of bidirectional communications, the transient nature of ephemeral science targets, and the prospect of multiple spacecraft operating simultaneously.

In an effort sponsored by the Space Technology Mission Directorate’s Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Tech Transfer (SBIR/STTR) program, Aurora Engineering has developed an onboard autonomous operations agent that can help mitigate these challenges.

Rather than a ground team planning spacecraft activities according to a schedule that is determined weeks in advance and is often based on predictive models with significant limitations, the Module for Event Driven Operations on Spacecraft (MEDOS) drives onboard operations by detecting events as they occur and determining a rational response the spacecraft can make in real time.

How does MEDOS work?

The MEDOS autonomous operations agent uses raw telemetry from multiple sources and fuses them together in real time to derive physically significant parameters.

These parameters are then compared to known events and based on these comparisons, MEDOS concludes, with a transparent and easily understood confidence measure, that a given event is occurring so it can decide on the appropriate autonomous response.

Unlike many machine learning applications, MEDOS does not require volumes of labeled training data, and it does not require precise numeric values to compare against. Rather, MEDOS incorporates uncertainty into its classification of events by encoding years of subject matter expert experience into an easy-to-understand mathematical construct.

By combining multiple derived parameters—each weighted appropriately—MEDOS arrives at an overall assessment.

For example, as shown in Figure 2, MEDOS takes the raw data from onboard instruments and derives physical parameters to indicate changes in the signal density, the environment, etc.

A sudden, coordinated change across multiple parameters (e.g., the energy and density of particle populations and the magnetic field activity simultaneously increase) could indicate the onset of a significant space weather event.

Once MEDOS recognizes the signature in the data and flags the corresponding measurements as a “Space Weather Event,” it then prioritizes the data for downlink.
