Five protesters who attended a June 1 protest where Richmond police officers deployed tear gas at the Robert E. Lee monument are suing the officers for their actions.

The class action lawsuit, filed in federal court Tuesday afternoon, seeks undisclosed monetary damages for violating the protesters’ First Amendment, Fourth Amendment and 14th Amendment rights and for assault, battery and gross negligence.

The plaintiffs are Richmond residents Jarrod and Megan Blackwood, Ryan Tagg, Christopher Gayler and Keenan Angel. They are being represented by Thomas H. Roberts & Associates, a law firm that handles personal injury and civil rights claims. The plaintiffs are suing individually and “on behalf of a class of similarly situated individuals,” meaning anyone who was at the June 1 protest.

The defendants are the police officers, who have not yet been identified, who participated in, encouraged or authorized the attack on protesters.

Ansonia Man Sentenced to Prison for Illegal Firearm Dealing

John H. Durham, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that MALIQUE MARTIN, 25, of Ansonia, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer in New Haven to 12 months and one day of imprisonment, followed by two years of supervised release, for illegally dealing firearms and ammunition.

According to court documents and statements made in court, in August and September 2019, members of ATF and the New Haven Police Department made controlled purchases of four firearms and corresponding ammunition from Martin. Two of firearms Martin sold – an AR-1 Patriot semiautomatic rifle and a Bersa 9mm pistol – had obliterated serial numbers. During one of the sales, Martin noted that the bullets he providedcould pierce a bulletproof vest.

Martin was arrested on October 2, 2019. On January 16, 2020, he pleaded guilty to one count of dealing firearms without a license and one count of possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission Jay Clayton said the SEC told Hertz, which filed for bankruptcy during the pandemic, the agency has issues with its plan to sell stock. “In this particular situation we have let the company know that we have comments on their disclosure,” Clayton told CNBC’s Bob Pisani on “Squawk on the Street” on Wednesday. “In most cases when you let a company know that the SEC has comments on their disclosure they do not go forward until those comments are resolved.”

In an effort to get a piece of the market’s rebound from the coronavirus downturn, retail investors are piling into bankrupt companies like Hertz. With the economic conditions improving suddenly, investors are betting these bankrupt companies are now in better shape than when they limped into Chapter 11.

Clayton said the company is aware the SEC has issues, but the regulator has not heard back yet from Hertz. When a company submits a filing to sell a security, the SEC will often submit comments back to the company asking it to improve the disclosure or any irregularities in the filing.

The chairman pointed out that in most cases when the SEC has comments, the company does not go through with the offering until those issues are resolved. Clayton did not elaborate specifically on what the issues were with the Hertz filing. Hertz said it would seek to sell $500 million in stock in a securities filing with the SEC on Monday. In quite an unusual disclosure in that filing, Hertz told potential investors that they would likely lose their money.

“Although we cannot predict how our common stock will be treated under a plan, we expect that common stock holders would not receive a recovery through any plan unless the holders of more senior claims and interests, such as secured and unsecured indebtedness (which is currently trading at a significant discount), are paid in full, which would require a significant and rapid and currently unanticipated improvement in business conditions to pre-COVID-19 or close to pre-COVID-19 levels,” the filing said.

A week ago Monday, Rep. Val Demings, a Florida Democrat rising up in the Joe Biden veepstakes, attended a massive “Healing and Hope” rally, where thousands of maskless protesters were jammed in elbow to elbow. She told her Twitter followers she was there “to speak with our community as America grieves.”

But by Thursday, Demings changed her tune (perhaps signifying that she’s a perfect choice for Biden).

“The president’s plan to hold mass rallies in Florida and elsewhere as we experience a resurgence in COVID cases is irresponsible and selfish,” Demings said.

“Do as I say, not as I do,” is the Democratic mantra.

Demings wasn’t alone in flip-flopping. Other top Democrats cheered on “Black Lives Matter” crowds across the United States, with many attending rallies in honor of George Floyd, a black man who died while in the custody of Minneapolis police. But they were incensed that President Trump was planning campaign rallies.

NYPD to disband plainclothes anti-crime units, reassign 600 cops

The NYPD’s elite anti-crime units — plainclothes teams that focus on gun arrests and stopping violent crimes that have been dogged by accusations of using heavy-handed tactics in brown and black communities — are officially a thing of the past.

The high-risk units — one for each of the city’s 77 police precincts and nine Police Service Areas that cover public housing — will be disbanded and all 600 cops reassigned, the city’s top cop announced Monday.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said he personally made the decision to banish the units, which have been responsible for a “disproportionate” number of shootings and misconduct complaints made against the New York Police Department in their decadeslong history.

He called it a “seismic shift” that will have an immediate effect — a change made to ease the friction in police-community relations.

“We must do it in a manner that builds trust between the officers and the community they serve,” he said. “I would consider this in the realm of closing one of the last chapters of stop, question and frisk.”

Activists Lock Police Precinct Doors in Portland, Burn American Flag

A group of people who appeared to be part of anarcho-communist group Antifa blocked an exit from a police precinct in Portland amid protests Tuesday night by tying down a roll-up door. The main doors of the Portland Police Bureau’s Central Precinct were also locked from the outside, police officials said.

The situation unfolded shortly after 11 p.m., as a group of protesters removed an American flag hanging outside the precinct. They later burned the flag, according to video footage captured by reporters, but utilized the cord for something else. “The flag cord was tied from the door to a fire hydrant on the Southside roll up door to prevent it from opening. Additionally, the Central Precinct main doors were locked from the outside with a u-lock blocking anyone inside from leaving,” the bureau said in a statement. “This presented a life safety issue for those inside. The flag was lit on fire and one person was injured by the burning flag. Warnings were given and the crowd left the area. Officers removed the exterior locks and objects on the doors.” Officials shared pictures showing the cord and a u-lock that was cut lying on the ground next to a chain.

Video footage captured by KOIN reporter Jenny Young showed a group of people dressed in all black with their faces obscured tying the cord to a fire hydrant and a door that rolls up to allow vehicles to enter and exit. The group tried convincing her to stop filming, alleging: “This is how people die.” “You’re risking the lives of everyone,” another said, before cutting off her video. Members of Antifa, a far-left group that has assaulted journalists in the past, usually dress similar to the people seen in the film. Around the same time, demonstrators shouted insults at several police officers at the backside of the Justice Center, which houses the precinct. One said: “There’s going to be chapters on June 2020 in the [expletive] history book … You’re going to be a [expletive] enemy.”

Protests sparked by alleged police brutality have taken place in Portland, a city in Oregon, in recent days. Several hundred people gathered at Jefferson High School and marched to the Fremont Bridge before dispersing around 10 p.m., police said. A separate group gathered outside the bureau. After the flag was lit on fire and one person was injured by the burning flag, officers gave warnings and the crowd left the area. Officers then removed the locks and objects on the doors. The group marched to the Pearl District and a vehicle moved through the crowd, striking several demonstrators. Three people were injured, two of whom were taken by ambulance to a hospital. The other was taken to a hospital in a personal vehicle. All injuries were believed to be non-life threatening. The driver was later located and arrested. Identified as Anthony Eaglehorse-Lassandro, 27, the driver was booked on charges including reckless driving and felony hit and run. Officers tried getting witness information at the location of the crash but no one there would share video footage of information, officials said.

The demonstrations Tuesday came after 10 people were arrested and charged amid protests the previous two days. Robert Harden, 33, Hailey Davis-Burton, 19, and Manuel Fox, 18, were booked on charges including assault of a public safety officer. Others were charged with burglary, interfering with a police officer, and riot. The arrests came after at least two reporters, including Beth Nakamura of The Oregonian, said they were assaulted by officers. Nakamura said she was covering protests when she was slammed by a baton from behind even after making clear she was a member of the press. Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, a Democrat, called the claim “extremely concerning,” and asked reporters to send complaints to his office while promising an investigation into every one.

On Monday, the Seattle rapper and producer released Cognitive Dissonance, his first release since partnering with Lyor Cohen, Todd Moscowitz and Kevin Liles over at their new company 300.

“I’ve done a lot of sh–, boxing in all of the shots/ And the c—s and the crotches, just for the profit/ My girl getting raped and then I couldn’t stop it/ To top it, the plane crashed with me in the cockpit,” he rhymes, before explaining how his career as a pimp and the time that he sold drugs to his aunt affected his psyche.

From the first track it is clear that Simone is no saint, on “So Far, So Far” he threatens to punch his son’s mother in the face while wearing multiple rings on his fingers. It all sounds horrendous, but Simone still manages to turn the tables and gain some sense of sympathy from the listener. “When I was a little boy I had big dreams/ Big house, big wedding, big ring,” he sings innocently before admitting that he is so far from the man he thought he’d be.

He's skilled enough to make admissions of violence and misogyny believable, eerily so. In the context of Seattle's longstanding issues with human trafficking and prostitution, the pain caused and felt by Raz in songs like the Adele-sampling "Hometown" is difficult to take. Cognitive Dissonance alternates between rhapsodic and discomforting, confessional and dead-eyed.

This swinging-for-the-fences album comes from a city where most rappers (and rockers, and DJs, and practically all musicians) are resigned to staying close to home. It feels like a plea for outside connection. It was made by somebody on the move.

Carlisle Events officials were considering their options Wednesday morning after the state Department of Health, citing COVID-19 concerns, sued the company to try to stop it from holding its Spring Carlisle car show that is expected to draw 100,000 visitors.

Mike Garland, company spokesman, said the firm was declining comment on the suit filed in Commonwealth Court while awaiting advice from its lawyer.

Meanwhile, the show, a huge automotive flea market that draws visitors and vendors nationwide, was still scheduled to run Wednesday through Saturday at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. It had already been delayed by two months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Staging the show could be disastrous, the Health Department claims.

“When individuals choose to ignore those safeguards—such as by holding an event anticipating 100,000 attendees—they put the lives of Pennsylvanians at risk and threaten to reverse the significant progress that has been made to resolve this crisis,” its petition to Commonwealth Court states. “That dangerous conduct must be stopped before it can occur.”

That cease and desist petition was filed Wednesday, a day after the Health Department sent Carlisle Events an email warning the firm it would be violating the 250-person attendance limit set under the emergency orders Gov. Tom Wolf and Health Secretary Rachel Levine has issued in an attempt to curb the spread of COVID-19, which has been blamed for more than 6,200 deaths in Pennsylvania.

Kente cloth worn by Democrats originated with African leaders who sold their people as slaves

Kente cloths donned recently by Congressional Democrats in what seemed to be a show of solidarity with African-Americans originated with an African slave-trading empire, fact checkers have noted.

Following the Democrats wearing the colorful cloths across their shoulders and kneeling in the U.S. Capitol building on June 8, Facebook user Dave Brandon posted this statement on the social media platform:

"Yesterday the Democrats wore kente scarfs and knelt down for their photo op. So check this out, Kente cloth was worn by the Ashanti. It's made of silk so the affluent wore it. The Ashanti were also known as slave owners and traders. Huh? … This makes me wonder why they chose to wear this particular tribe's garb."

USA Today fact checked the claim, and determined it to be accurate. The media outlet published an article Tuesday explaining its findings about Kente cloth. The article reads, in part:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on advertisers to boycott social media networks unless the outlets agree to restrict "dangerous" political speech, even as her campaign spent over $180,000 on Facebook ads over the past week.

"Advertisers are in a position, they have power to discourage platforms from amplifying dangerous and even life-threatening disinformation," said Pelosi at an online conference on social media hosted by George Washington University on Tuesday.

Pelosi said advertisers should use "a combination" of tactics to pressure social media companies to change their policies, including pulling ad revenue.

Pelosi spent $182,528 on Facebook ads over the past seven days, according to Facebook’s public database. The spending shows the value Democrats place on the platform as a political fundraising and organizing tool, even as they call for tighter speech restrictions on the site.

Pelosi's comments appear to correspond with Joe Biden's public pressure campaign against Facebook. Last week, the Democratic presidential candidate called on supporters to protest Facebook and demand that the website restrict "misinformation" posted on the platform by Donald Trump and his supporters.

During the social media conference, Pelosi also read remarks from former Facebook employees who claimed the website "weaponized hatred" and "isn't neutral."

"You know, [Facebook founder] Mark [Zuckerberg] said it's neutral. It isn't neutral," said Pelosi.

A spokesperson for Pelosi did not respond to a request for comment. Facebook did not respond to a request for comment.

Biden spent over $4.7 million on Facebook ads this month, the Washington Free Beacon reported, while blasting the website for allegedly allowing "threatening behavior and the spread of misinformation" from Trump.

The Biden campaign has been privately lobbying Facebook for stricter speech policies for months, but deployed its supporters against the social network last week after its demands were rebuffed, the New York Times reported.

On Tuesday, Biden’s deputy communications director Bill Russo sent out an email blast asking supporters to sign an open letter to Zuckerberg "to help us pressure Facebook to do the right thing."

"We called on Facebook—in an open letter, co-signed by you, our supporters—to change its policies by finally preventing rampant disinformation before it influences our election," the campaign said in the email. "Facebook responded, and I will spare you the details, because honestly, it didn't even make sense."

"[R]ight now, Facebook is letting Donald Trump write the terms of what’s acceptable online in this election, and we won't stand for it," the email continued.

Montana governor Steve Bullock kicked off his Senate campaign by claiming that he "won't answer to party bosses," just months after reports emerged that the Democrat bowed to pressure from Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) to break his pledge not to run in 2020.

Bullock emphasized in his first TV ad that he would not be beholden to party leaders after bowing to pressure from top Democrats to jump in the race. Though Bullock repeatedly dismissed a Senate bid during his unsuccessful presidential campaign—it was "something that never really got me excited," he said—Bullock buckled after closed-door meetings in February with Schumer and former president Barack Obama.

The Montana governor campaigned as a centrist when he was elected in 2012, but embraced several left-wing positions during his ill-fated presidential campaign. In June 2019, for example, Bullock flipped on his long-standing support for the state's coal plants, citing a U.N. recommendation to transition away from the energy source. He also expressed support for an assault weapons ban.

Congressional Display of "Solidarity with Protesters" Goes Horribly Wrong

You may have seen them with heads bowed, draped in stoles of colorful African kente cloth. Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Jerry Nadler*, and other Democrat leaders knelt in the marbled halls of Congress for 8 minutes, in solidarity with people protesting over the death of George Floyd. [1] (*Mr. Nadler stood, as he was unable to kneel.)

Wait- Something's gone horribly wrong! This made-for-TV photo-op was an epic fail in three respects.

Kente cloth of Ashanti slave traders

Kente cloth is deeply intertwined with the history of the Ashanti nation. The Ashanti Empire (in Ghana, on today's map), emerged in the 17th century. The costly cloth, associated with Ashanti royalty, was woven from silk imported via the trans-Saharan trade route connecting West Africa to Asia through the Middle East. The Ashanti people practiced human slavery (as did many others of that era). Slaves from Africa were sold and transported along the very same trade route as Asian silk. Thus, kente cloth is also a powerful symbol of an African tradition of black-on-black human slavery. [2], [3] At each State of the Union address, the Congressional Black Caucus and their Democrat allies flaunt the same kente cloth stoles. Is this a bad joke?

Cultural appropriation

Cultural appropriation is “the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture,” per the Cambridge Dictionary. “Cultural appropriation occurs when a more powerful person or institution projects the culture of a less powerful person,” wrote Dr. Luis Urrieta, professor of cultural studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He adds, “It also often involves obscuring or erasing the meaning behind the cultural item.” [4] It is undeniable that the Democrats' display of kente cloth—ancient symbol of African Ashanti slave-trading elites—is a blatant example of "obscuring or erasing the meaning behind the cultural item."

Reenacting the Oppressor Role

It is also curious that "taking a knee" has become a mandatory motif of progressive demonstrations. Curious, because of the deep symbolism that kneeling invokes. Those who watched disturbing video saw apparent victim George Floyd prone, with a policeman apparently kneeling on Floyd's neck. By kneeling, Congressional Democrats symbolically reenacted the last scene of George Floyd's life—only they took the role of oppressors. We Americans traditionally stand to honor our flag and our dignitaries; we kneel only in prayer. Our forebears soundly rejected Old World traditions of bowing to royalty in 1776, when 13 American colonies revolted against European royalty and asserted our God-given independence. Is the display of "taking a knee" poor taste, another bad joke, or perhaps they thought you wouldn't notice?

Sidney Powell, the defense attorney for Lt. Gen.
