Blue Angels, Thunderbirds to fly over Atlanta on Saturday | What you need to know

The flyovers will take place at 1:35 p.m. on Saturday and last for around 25 minutes

ATLANTA — If you live near downtown Atlanta, or any hospitals in the area, you'll want to look up in the sky on Saturday afternoon.

The U.S. Navy's, the Blue Angels, and the U.S. Air Force's, the Thunderbirds, will honor front-line COVID-19 responders and essential workers with formation flights over the city.

“America Strong is a way for both teams to show appreciation to the thousands of doctors, nurses, first responders and essential workers out there serving on the front line day-in and day-out,” said Cmdr. Brian Kesselring, U.S. Navy Blue Angels commanding officer and flight leader for the flyover. “This is an extraordinary and unprecedented time but we will get through this. We are all in this together.”

Flyovers in Atlanta will start at 1:35 p.m. and last approximately 25 minutes, they said in a news release.

Tentatively, they are expected to fly over these hospitals at the following times:

Atlanta VA Hospital 1:38

Northside Hospital/Children’s at Scottish Rite 1:39

Grady Memorial Hospital/Children’s at Hughes Spalding 1:44

A formation of 6 F-16C/D Fighting Falcon and 6 F/A-18C/D Hornet aircraft will conduct these flyovers, they said, as a "collaborative salute" to essential personnel "while standing in solidarity with all Americans" during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are honored to fly over these cities in a display of national unity and support for the men and women keeping our communities safe.” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. John Caldwell, Thunderbird commander and lead pilot. “These flyovers are a gesture of goodwill on behalf of the entire Department of Defense to the heroes of the COIVD-19 pandemic.”

Anon had a very interesting suggestion here.

So many of us still try to wrestle data with spreadsheets, which are really hard to make without errors, and also really hard to audit to show that they are correct.

But nowadays, we have much more powerful tools for data analysis. We shouldn't be relying on authorities to crunch the numbers and make the charts.

We can become data analysts with professional tools

Just like we can become investigative journalists with professional tools.

1 Houston police officer killed, 1 injured in copter crash

HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston police helicopter crashed early Saturday, killing one of the two officers on board and critically injuring the other, officials said.

A pilot and tactical flight officer were aboard a police helicopter when it crashed at an apartment complex around 2 a.m. They were flown to a hospital where the tactical flight officer died, police Chief Art Acevedo said hours after the crash during a news conference where he was joined by the city's mayor, Sylvester Turner.

The pilot was still in surgery and was “very banged up,” but police were hopeful he would survive, Acevedi said, noting that investigators still didn't know what caused the crash.

There were no injuries to anyone on the ground at the apartment complex, a masked Acevedo told reporters.

The helicopter was supposed to assist with a search for bodies in a nearby bayou, which was prompted by a tip that the police chief characterized as “probably a bogus call — we don't know."

The officers were trapped in “mangled” wreckage before being cut out by city firefighters who worked for about an hour, Acevedo said, praising the fire department as “phenomenal.”

Acevedo identified two silver linings at the first news conference: While the wreckage was “pretty significant,” it didn't catch fire, and the helicopter avoided striking occupied apartment buildings. It did clip the Biscayne at Cityview complex's clubhouse, he said.

The department will not release the names of the officers until their extended families are made aware, Acevedo said. The tactical flight officer was survived by a wife and two young children, who were at the hospital along with the officer’s parents and in-laws, Acevedo said.

The police department is shutting down flights until it has a chance to reassess in the coming days, and will be relying on the Texas Department of Public Safety and Harris County Sheriff's Office for flight support in the interim.

Acevedo identified the helicopter as “75 Fox.”

“It’s pretty ironic that yesterday we graduated a class and we had Fox fly out because we had COVID, so we couldn’t do your traditional graduation so we wanted to do something special,” Acevedo said. “And if somebody had told me that a few hours later that we had an aircraft down and we’d lose a really good man, I would have said ‘No way.’”

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration will investigate, Acevedo said, while the police department conducts a parallel homicide investigation.

Turner, the mayor, called on the people of the city "to continue to lift up, number one, both families, but especially lift up the family of the police officer who has died this morning. And then at the same time lift up the entire HPD family."

Acevedo noted that shots rang out across the street from the scene at around 3 a.m. Six people were taken into custody, he said. Acevedo stressed that police had no information indicating that the helicopter might have been taken down by hostile action.

Buffett's Berkshire posts nearly $50 billion loss on coronavirus, operating profit rises

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc on Saturday posted a record net loss of nearly $50 billion as the coronavirus pandemic pummeled its common stock investments, but operating profit rose even as COVID-19 hurt its businesses.

Berkshire’s first-quarter net loss totaled $49.75 billion, or $30,653 per Class A share, reflecting $54.52 billion of losses from investments, mainly common stocks. A year earlier, net earnings totaled $21.66 billion, or $13,209 per share.

Quarterly operating profit, which Buffett considers a better performance measure, rose 6% to $5.87 billion, or about $3,624 per Class A share $5.56 billion, or about $3,388 per share.

An accounting rule requires Berkshire to report unrealized stock losses and gains with earnings. This causes huge swings in Berkshire’s net results that Buffett considers meaningless.

technically this is a correct way to look at it however if those positions had to be liquidated-which he has done with some of the Delta and Southwest position(s)-they reflect reality of a souring overall portfolio margin.

Nonetheless, Berkshire has loaded up on stocks in part because of Buffett’s inability to find large companies to buy outright, a drought that has lasted more than four years and left Berkshire with about $137.3 billion of cash.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 slid 20% in the first quarter but there were steeper falls in several large Berkshire holdings including American Express, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and four airlines — American, Delta, Southwest and United. Berkshire’s operating businesses, like much of corporate America, were not unscathed by COVID-19, which hurt volumes at the BNSF railroad and forced retail businesses such as See’s Candies to temporarily close stores.

Most of Berkshire’s businesses have been hurt by the pandemic, with effects so far ranging from “relatively minor to severe,” and revenues of businesses deemed “essential” have slowed “considerably” in April, the company said. Vice Chairman Charlie Munger told The Wall Street Journal last month that a few small Berkshire businesses might close altogether.

A Harvard math professor was placed on administrative leave Friday after a damning new report claimed he had continued to maintain an office on campus for convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, even after the deceased financier's 2008 sex crimes conviction.

Nearly 10,000 inmates freed as virus hits Philippine jails

Nearly 10,000 prison inmates have been released in the Philippines as the country races to halt coronavirus infections in its overcrowded jails, a Supreme Court official said Saturday.

The move follows a directive to lower courts to release those awaiting trial in prison because they could not afford bail, Associate Supreme Court Justice Mario Victor Leonen told reporters.

"The court is very much aware of the congested situation in our prisons," Leonen told reporters as he announced the release of 9,731 inmates.

Covid-19 outbreaks have been reported at some of the country's most overcrowded jails, affecting both inmates as well as corrections personnel.

Social distancing is all but impossible in the country's prison system, where cells are sometimes filled to five times their capacity due to inadequate infrastructure and a slow-moving and overburdened judicial system.

Overcrowding has become an even greater problem since President Rodrigo Duterte launched a drug crackdown in 2016 that has seen thousands sent to prison.

Among those which have reported outbreaks are the Quezon City Jail in the capital Manila, a facility so crowded that inmates take turns sleeping on staircases and open-air basketball courts.

The worst outbreaks so far are at two prisons in the central island of Cebu, where two city jails have announced a combined 348 infections among more than 8,000 inmates as of Friday.

The outbreaks have fuelled calls from rights groups for the early release of prisoners charged with non-violent offences as well as the sick and elderly.

Gov. Kate Brown issued an executive order directing Oregonians to stay at home that "remains in effect until ended by the governor."

Brown announced a joint Western States Pact with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on April 13.

A powerful 6.5-magnitude quake struck the Greek island of Crete on Saturday, about 140km south of its capital, Iraklion, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center reports.

France extends health emergency until July 24 as Europe mulls lifting lockdown restrictions

France’s minister of health has announced an extension of the public health state of emergency until July 24. The country was placed under emergency on March 24 due the Covid-19 outbreak.

The move was announced by Olivier Veran on Saturday, following an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers.

While the state of health emergency was expected to be lifted on May 23, doing so was deemed to be “premature” and carrying risk of the “epidemic resurgence,” the draft bill reads as quoted by local media.

The government’s decision to extend the emergency is set be submitted to the country’s legislature for final approval next week.

The news comes two months after the Vatican opened its archives on Pope Pius XII, who led the Catholic Church from 1939 to 1958 and has been subject to harsh criticism due to his stance on the Holocaust and the Nazi regime in general.

The council of Catholic bishops in Germany has confessed that the church was "complicit in the war" by not opposing the Nazis during World War II, according to The Times.

"Inasmuch as the bishops did not oppose the war with a clear 'no', and most of them bolstered the [German nation's] will to endure, they made themselves complicit in the war... The bishops may not have shared the Nazis' justification for the war on the grounds of racial ideology, but their words and their images gave succour both to soldiers and the regime prosecuting the war, as they lent the war an additional sense of purpose", the document said.

French police arrested two far-left Antifa extremists who were armed with firearms and plotting an attack on police officers.

The two individuals were arrested simultaneously in the commune of Corbas and the municipality of Bourg-en-Bresse, located north-east of the city of Lyon.

The elite French police tactical unit Research, Assistance, Intervention, Deterrence (RAID) undertook the operations that led to the arrests after investigators had learnt the pair had acquired firearms to carry out an attack, LyonMag reported on Thursday. New Mexico’s Governor has issued a three-day emergency order in the city of Gallup where roads will be sealed off and businesses closed during peak hours in a desperate bid to stop a surging coronavirus outbreak.

On Friday Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham invoked the state’s Riot Control Act to ban all traffic in Gallup for non-residents, ordered all businesses to close from 5pm to 8am, and mandated residents stay home except for essential trips from Friday through Monday.

The city of 22,000, along with the bordering the Navajo Nation, has seen the number of COVID-19 infection rates rise, leaving intensive care facilities in hospitals inundated with patients.

Gallup is a central hub selling basic household supplies, liquor, and water-containing refills for people who live in the remote parts of the Navajo Nation and surrounding McKinley County and for indigenous Zuni Pueblo people.

China jails scientists for CRISPR gene-edited babies

A court has found Chinese scientist He Jiankui guilty of illegal medical practice. He had claimed credit for genetically engineering twins resistant to HIV in a controversial procedure.

A Chinese court on Monday sentenced biophysics researcher He Jiankui to three years in prison for creating the world's first "gene-edited" babies.

Two other scientists who assisted He were also handed lesser sentences.

"The three accused did not have the proper certification to practice medicine, and in seeking fame and wealth, deliberately violated national regulations in scientific research and medical treatment," said the court, according to China's Xinhua news agency.

"They've crossed the bottom line of ethics in scientific research and medical ethics."

'My work will be controversial'

In 2018, He released a YouTube video announcing the results of his medical intervention and the birth of gene-edited twins. He said the genes were edited using CRISPR to prevent embryos from contracting HIV, noting that the twins' father had the virus.

"Their parents don't want a designer baby," He said. "Just a child who won't suffer from a disease which medicine can prevent. I understand my work will be controversial, but I believe families need this technology and I'm willing to take the criticism for them."

His actions were widely condemned by the scientific community for failing to adhere to research guidelines that forbid such practices, especially without oversight.

In the US, the medical procedure is strictly limited to laboratory research. In China, while human cloning is outlawed, gene editing is not.

The MIT Technology Review warned that "the technology is ethically charged because changes to an embryo would be inherited by future generations and could eventually affect the entire gene pool."

A study published afterward found that the people who have comparable natural genetic modification are likely to die earlier.

Four B-1B heavy bombers and hundreds of servicemen were sent to Guam to carry out “deterrence missions” with eyes on Beijing, following days of provocative maneuvers near contested territory in the South China Sea.

The warplanes and personnel arrived at Andersen Air Force Base on Guam on Friday, US Strategic Command announced in a statement, noting that three of the B-1B Lancers flew directly to the base, while one diverted to waters near Japan to train with the Navy before joining the others.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:30 P.M.) – The Iranian government said it had informed Washington that an extension of the U.S. arms embargo would “face a severe response.”

According to Iranian state media, government spokesperson, Ali Rabei, said at a press conference on Saturday that “we have informed the United States of America and Europe that the extension of the international community’s arms embargo against Iran is inconsistent with previous agreements and will face a harsh response.”

Rabiei stressed that this procedure “will have serious repercussions on the nuclear agreement and beyond the nuclear agreement, and will have negative repercussions on the security and stability of the region.”

“We talked to the member states of the nuclear agreement and they informed us that they will not accept the United States’ method of extending our arms embargo.”

School frightens him now. Earlier this year, a cleric at the religious school he faithfully attended in the southern Punjab town of Pakpattan took him into a washroom and tried to rape him. Muhimman’s aunt, Shazia, who wanted only her first name used, said she believes the abuse of young children is endemic in Pakistan’s religious schools. She said she has known the cleric, Moeed Shah, since she was a little girl and describes him as an habitual abuser who used to ask little girls to pull up their shirts.

“He has done wrong with boys and also with two or three girls,” Shazia said, recalling one girl the cleric brutalized so badly he broke her back.

A person in Oregon who is symptomatic for COVID19 (and who doesn't want to risk DHS taking their child) would be wise to seek testing and/or treatment in a red state. This power grab is out of control.

Scarborough Shoal Area

Taking a look at this area that attracted attention last night. Still a big hole of empty traffic, see the circled area shown in the graphic. Arrows indicate that vessels in the area do appear to be steering away from transit through the empty area. There are clearly transit lanes that do not include the circled area but past observation indicates that some vessels are heading towards but turning away from the area.

Discussion last night centered on 3 possibilities, either a lurking ChiCom cruiser, unlighted navigation hazard situation or some other type of mil ops possibly related to mining. Inclined to go with third, reasons are due to the platform involved. The US is positioning a mobile expeditionary base ship in the area (used for mine countermeasures and special ops) which is not an ideal platform for countering a cruiser or destroyer. Likewise, if it's just a navigation hazard, having a MEB onsite doesn't help, that's a job for bouy tenders and other coast guard-type vessels. It also doesn't really explain why the MEB would be used to deploy AH-64's in the area, either. Either its an exercise or some other type of mil operation.

East Korea Strait

Nothing of note indicated in this area where the USN twatted about Mine CounterMeasures ships conducting exercises there yesterday. The East Korea/Tsushima Strait area has loads of the usual traffic but nothing stands out.

Venezuela same situation. Nothing that appears to be different than the usual traffic. I'm sure the USN has assets in the area but they're not showing, and nothing stands out right now.

President Trump’s roller coaster approval ratings are back to their all-time high, this time thanks to the record support of independents, a group he needs to win reelection but has struggled with.

The latest Gallup survey found that 49% of adults approve of the president’s job, up from 43% two weeks ago. Trump has never crossed 49% in the Gallup survey.

The pop came despite crushing media criticism of his fight against the coronavirus and push to reopen the economy.

But it also came as the stock market was signaling support, and many in the United States joined with his call to get the country back to work.

Trump campaign deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews told Secrets, "Americans want to see their president out front and leading in a time of crisis, and that’s exactly what President Trump is doing. He understands these are challenging times for the American people, which is why he has left no stone unturned and unleashed an unprecedented, whole of America approach to defeat this virus."

Helping Trump, said Gallup, was the support of independents. “Most of the variation in Trump's recent job approval rating is among independents. In the current poll, 47% of independents approve of the job he is doing as president, the highest Gallup has measured for the group to date. 93% of Republicans and 8% of Democrats approve of the job Trump is doing,” said Gallup.

The polling outfit put the Trump approval rating turnaround in a story about America’s split opinion on his handling of the coronavirus effort. For that, 50% approve, 48% disapprove.

Komi went on to delete the tweet following condemnation, and was asked by his party and the New Hampshire House speaker on Friday to resign his seat.

In a statement sent to Mediaite, House Speaker Steve Shurtleff said, “I am appalled by Representative Komi’s comments. They were dismissive and hurtful to survivors of sexual assault across the Granite State and across the country.”

“The comments are not fitting for the New Hampshire House of Representatives and immediately upon learning of them I called him and asked Representative Komi to resign his seat,” Shurtleff declared.

New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley also called for Komi to resign, adding, “Representative Komi’s comment is wrong, inappropriate, and offensive to all Democrats, and does not reflect the values of our party. I applaud Speaker Shurtleff’s swift action, calling for Representative Komi to resign immediately.”

On his Facebook and Twitter accounts, Komi had published several photographs of and with Biden.

Following calls for Komi’s resignation, he set his Twitter account to private and changed the bio to read, “Former Member of New Hampshire House of Representatives.”

Had a Declaration of Independency been made seven Months ago, it would have been attended with many great and glorious Effects . . . . We might before this Hour, have formed Alliances with foreign States. We should have mastered Quebec and been in Possession of Canada .... You will perhaps wonder, how such a Declaration would have influenced our Affairs, in Canada, but if I could write with Freedom I could easily convince you, that it would, and explain to you the manner how. Many Gentlemen in high Stations and of great Influence have been duped, by the ministerial Bubble of Commissioners to treat .... And in real, sincere Expectation of this effort Event, which they so fondly wished, they have been slow and languid, in promoting Measures for the Reduction of that Province. Others there are in the Colonies who really wished that our Enterprise in Canada would be defeated, that the Colonies might be brought into Danger and Distress between two Fires, and be thus induced to submit. All these Causes however in Conjunction would not have disappointed Us, if it had not been for a Misfortune, which could not be foreseen, and perhaps could not have been prevented, I mean the Prevalence of the small Pox among our Troops .... This fatal Pestilence compleated our Destruction. - It is a Frown of Providence upon Us, which We ought to lay to heart.

But on the other Hand, the Delay of this Declaration to this Time, has many great Advantages attending it. The Hopes of Reconciliation, which were fondly entertained by Multitudes of honest and well meaning tho weak and mistaken People, have been gradually and at last totally extinguished. Time has been given for the whole People, maturely to consider the great Question of Independence and to ripen their judgments, dissipate their Fears, and allure their Hopes, by discussing it in News Papers and Pamphletts, by debating it, in Assemblies, Conventions, Committees of Safety and Inspection, in Town and County Meetings, as well as in private Conversations, so that the whole People in every Colony of the 13, have now adopted it, as their own Act. - This will cement the Union, and avoid those Heats and perhaps Convulsions which might have been occasioned, by such a Declaration Six Months ago.

"It's often said campaigns are a battle of ideas, but they're really a battle of narratives," said David Eichenbaum, a Democratic media consultant who is a senior adviser to the PAC. "Today those narratives spread quickly online."

The initiative is run by Curtis Hougland, whose received initial funding for the technology from DARPA, the Pentagon's research arm, as part of an effort to combat extremism overseas. He insists Democrats are ill-prepared for the looming battle over information and attention, which is bound to play an outsize role in November.

"I see the people on Twitter," he said. "I see the Facebook groups. I see the posts across these networks. I see the websites people have created to support the president. It's tremendous amounts of stuff that I've never seen in a presidential election before."

Though he is advising the overtly political effort, McChrystal stopped short of endorsing Trump's opponent, former vice president Joe Biden, whom the former general once criticized as part of a dust-up that led to his resignation.

McChrystal said his interest in the PAC is about ensuring the accuracy of information leading up to the election, even if it involves chasing viral attention with emotional appeals and other tactics rewarded by online clicks.

"Everyone wishes the Pandora's box was closed and none of this existed, but it does," McChrystal said in an interview.

Hougland's PAC shuns these methods. Yet it differs from more traditional Democratic-aligned PACs, such as Priorities USA and American Bridge 21st Century, in embracing the practice of paying influencers to convey their messaging. The approach raised eyebrows and prompted tech companies to clarify their rules when it was put into practice by Mike Bloomberg's presidential campaign earlier this year.

"I have no trepidation about paying content creators in seeking out and amplifying the best narratives," Hougland said.

Main Street One's leaders were previously involved in cultivating digital narratives in Eastern Europe to counter Russian propaganda and, more recently, have waded into American politics. The organization ran a campaign that paid influencers to boost Kentucky Democrats before the gubernatorial election last fall. A super PAC supporting Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey in his bid for the Democratic nomination paid Main Street One more than $500,000 for similar services last year.

Hougland said his aim is to maintain the "largest repository of content against Trump," and to be nimble in boosting organic material that is already performing well, such as videos produced by the Biden campaign.

At the same time, Biden's aides are betting that the president's bully pulpit is just as likely to turn voters off as it is to win them over. Matt Hill, a campaign spokesman, pointed to recent moves by the president's team to "pull back his daily disinformation shows as his credibility continues to sink."

But Joe Trippi, a Democratic operative who helped manage the 2017 Senate campaign in Alabama, said the president is partially insulated from the fallout over his own remarks by a "media echo chamber that is very disciplined about just picking up whatever the misdirection of the day is and amplifying it." That protective armor makes it all the more critical for Democrats to turn up the volume on anti-Trump messaging, he said.

But Trippi wondered about the long-term consequences of adopting some of the online tactics favored by the right. Otherwise, she said, "it's most effective to counter false narratives with straight-up facts."

France extends health emergency until July 24 as Europe mulls lifting lockdown restrictions

France’s minister of health has announced an extension of the public health state of emergency until July 24. The country was placed under emergency on March 24 due the Covid-19 outbreak.

The move was announced by Olivier Veran on Saturday, following an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers.

While the state of health emergency was expected to be lifted on May 23, doing so was deemed to be “premature” and carrying risk of the “epidemic resurgence,” the draft bill reads as quoted by local media.

The government’s decision to extend the emergency is set be submitted to the country’s legislature for final approval next week.

It was not immediately clear whether the emergency extension will affect the plans to begin gradually lifting the restrictions starting from May 11. The country is expected to reopen schools and businesses, easing the weeks-long lockdown. Still, life "wouldn’t be back to normal” at once, France's President Emmanuel Macron has warned. Reopening of the country will be effected in “several phases” and a “recovery period” will be set out.

Although the European coronavirus tally has now surpassed the 1.5 million mark, countries across the continent are starting to ease their lockdowns. Italy is expected to lift some of its restrictions on May 4, allowing people to exercise outdoors as well as to visit relatives living nearby. Retailers and cultural sites are expected to be allowed to reopen in mid-May, with bars and restaurants to follow on June 1.

Spain eased its lockdown as well, allowing adult citizens to exercise outdoors starting from Saturday. The restrictive measures for minors were partially lifted a week ago.

Playgrounds began reopening across Germany on Friday, while schools are expected to be partially back in action next week. Social distancing measures will remain in place until at least May 10, however. In Norway and Denmark, some schools and nurseries have already reopened.

Coronavirus Death Counts Reported by Media Outpace Actual Deaths Reported Per CDC By Nearly 29,000

What is going on? The reporting in the media of the China coronavirus is just plain horrible.

The media is reporting massive death counts from the China coronavirus. These counts are coming from a couple of sources, one of which is the Worldometer coronavirus website. The death counts on these sites and in the media are over reporting the number of China coronavirus deaths by 62% when compared to the data at the CDC website.

As of April 25, 2020, the CDC reported that 33,513 Americans died from the China coronavirus. Note that their number includes confirmed or presumed to be COVID-19 deaths.

And here is the CDC data from Friday May 1 on US Coronavirus deaths.

Notice that according to the CDC the Coronavirus deaths reached a peak the week of April 18th.

The Worldometer website shows 54,269 corononvirus deaths as of April 25th. And 62,262 US deaths on May 2nd.

This amount is 62% greater than the amount reported by the CDC:

In addition, according to the CDC, there were no deaths confirmed or assumed to be COVID-19 deaths until the end of February 2020. As of April 25th, the number of China coronavirus deaths appears to be decreasing:

The founder of Main Street One, Curtis Hougland, was looking elsewhere. His specialty was combating hate speech and online extremism. In previous years Hougland had received funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Pentagon’s research unit for emerging technologies, to assist in the propaganda fight against ISIS, which had developed a small but sophisticated content machine that exploited social networks to amplify its vision.

It was low cost and powerful: just 5% of identified ISIS members were making 80% of its online content spreading around the world. Hougland went on to study Russia’s online disinformation efforts in Eastern Europe, and heading into the 2016 election, he began to notice similar patterns emerging on the American right: low-budget, high-frequency content that riled human emotions, delivered on social media in decentralized fashion, by non-official messengers.

With no direction and little interest in fact-based argument, right-wing voices and bot networks were flooding Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter with memes, junk news, misleading statistics, and links designed to inflame voter sentiment around hot-button cultural issues like race, immigration, and identity. But Democrats, always on message, were sticking to paid advertising. “It was becoming clear that one side had weaponized the internet, and one side hadn’t,” Hougland told me recently.

“Democrats want to focus on facts and figures. The other side plays into fears and taps into emotions, and they show it to you. It’s all about emotional resonance.”

Philadelphia, PA — While most parents of school children in the United States will take comfort in knowing a police officer is at their child’s school, all too often, school cops are caught committing the vilest of offenses. As the following case out of Philadelphia illustrates, “protection and safety” are the last things some of the young children receive from their school cop.

A now-former Philadelphia school police officer has been charged in multiple instances of child sex abuse from his time as a school police officer. Former cop Howard Rubin, 51, was arrested on 12 counts and is being held on $3 million bail, court records show.

As the Philadelphia Inquirer points out, the most serious charge, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse — an adult engaging in sodomy with a person 15 or younger — is a felony that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The charges also include witness/victim intimidation, statutory sexual assault of a person 11 years or older, indecent assault of a person under 13 years old, and displaying obscene sexual materials.

According to the report, the exact details of these charges are unavailable and cannot be requested currently due to closures from the COVID-19 outbreak. Questions regarding the case were referred by a Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson to the District Attorney’s Office. Jane Roh, spokesperson for the District Attorney’s Office, declined to comment, saying it is an open case.

However, according to court records, two days before Rubin was fired from his position as school officer, his personnel file shows the school received multiple complaints from multiple young boys.

The Inquirer obtained the termination letter, in which principal James Higgins reportedly wrote that “some serious allegations have been made against you, which are now being investigated by police.… While we have yet to complete our investigation, we have determined that your behavior, at the very least, and even by your own admission, was unbecoming of a school police officer and a public employee.”

Two weeks later, CBS3 reported Rubin’s firing and said he was under investigation in the sexual assault of a male student. The school’s principal denied the story in a letter to parents the following day, the Inquirer reports.

‘Trying every trick in the book’: UK government changes rules to hit 100k coronavirus tests target

In its scramble to hit the target of 100,000 Covid-19 tests a day by the end of April, the UK government has revised the way it counts them, the Health Service Journal (HSJ) reports. UK health officials deny the claim.

A test would previously only have been counted in its tally once the sample had been processed in a laboratory, but that’s changed in the past few days, a senior source told the HSJ.

It’s alleged that the Department of Health and Social Care is now also including in its official numbers those tests that have simply been mailed out, regardless of whether the sample has been returned by the recipient.

We’re now counting a home test as tests which have been sent to people’s homes.

HSJ reports that up to 50,000 of the tests that will be registered as having taken place by the landmark date of April 30 will actually only have been mailed. That figure will also include those home tests that recipients have merely agreed to receive in the randomized trial being undertaken across England.

In the past week, 23–30 April, the number of ‘actual tests’ reported by the government has increased dramatically, from 23,560 to 81,611.

Matt Hancock, the health and social care secretary, had become “obsessed” with reaching the 100k target, according to an unnamed senior source quoted by HNJ, who added that work to achieve this goal had been “manic.”

Speaking at the government’s daily coronavirus press briefing on Friday evening, Hancock announced that the target had been met – with 122,000 tests recorded in the 24-hour period up to 9am local time Friday.

The health official charged with overseeing the government’s testing plan, Professor John Newton, director of health improvement for Public Health England, responded to the HSJ report by denying any change has been made to the manner of counting tests. Speaking alongside Hancock at Friday’s briefing, Newton insisted it has always been the case that tests mailed out were included in the count.

The Trump campaign released a new ad on Friday highlighting the Democratic Party's hypocrisy for pushing aside sexual assault allegations against Joe Biden.

The ad depicts how Democrats supported the woman who accused Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, but have stayed mostly silent now that their presumptive presidential nominee is facing accusations of sexual assault.

"During Justice Kavanaugh's hearings, Biden made clear that all women should be believed when they come forward with allegations of sexual assault," Trump campaign spokeswoman Erin Perrine said in a statement.

"The double standard exhibited by Biden, prominent liberal women's groups, and Democrat elected officials – some of whom want to be Biden's running mate — is glaring and cannot be allowed to stand," she added.

Biden appeared on MSNBC Friday to address allegations of sexual assault brought by Tara Reade.

Reade claims that Biden sexually assaulted her in 1993 when she worked as an aide in his U.S. Senate office. Biden vigorously denied those allegations.

Meanwhile, another woman came forward on Friday claiming that Biden sexually harassed her when she was just 14 years old by complimenting the size of her breasts.

New Mexico Governor Closes Roads to Coronavirus Hotspot

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) on Friday invoked the state’s Riot Control Act, closing roads leading into Gallup, the state’s hotspot of the Chinese coronavirus.

Grisham invoked the Riot Control Act, effectively barring nonessential travel to the city as a means to slow the spread of the virus, per requests from both outgoing Gallup Mayor Jackie McKinney and incoming Mayor Louis Bonaguidi:

“I recognize this request is unusual and constitutes a drastic measure, and the emergency powers set out under the Riot Control Act should be invoked sparingly,” said Bonaguidi said in a statement.

“However, the COVID-19 outbreak in the city of Gallup is a crisis of the highest order. Immediate action is necessary,” Bonaguidi added.

The order went into effect Friday, May 1, at 12 p.m and will expire Monday, May 4, at noon.

Per the press release:

Businesses in the city of Gallup will close from 5 p.m. through 8 a.m. Vehicles may only have a maximum of two individuals. Residents of the city should remain at home except for emergency outings and those essential for health, safety and welfare.

Gallup city police and McKinley County sheriff’s department will partner with New Mexico State Police and Department of Transportation to enforce the emergency order and road closures. The New Mexico National Guard will also provide support to this effort in a non-law enforcement capacity.

Anyone who fails to comply with the restrictions accompanying the Riot Control Act “is guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction of a second or subsequent offense is guilty of a fourth-degree felony,” according to the press release.

Gallup is located in New Mexico’s McKinley County, which had 1,064 confirmed cases of the virus as of Saturday morning. The county’s cases account for nearly one-third of the state’s total positive cases.

Grisham on Friday extended the state’s stay-at-home order until Thursday, May 15, while easing restrictions on certain businesses previously deemed “nonessential.”

The state had 3,513 confirmed cases and 131 related deaths as of Saturday morning, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

Houston police say an officer has died and another remains in critical condition following a helicopter crash

HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston police helicopter crashed early Saturday, killing one of the two officers on board and critically injuring the other, officials said.

A pilot and tactical flight officer were aboard a police helicopter when it crashed at an apartment complex around 2 a.m. They were flown to a hospital where the tactical flight officer died, police Chief Art Acevedo said hours after the crash during a news conference where he was joined by the city’s mayor, Sylvester Turner.

The department that the officer who died was Tactical Flight Officer Jason Knox. He is survived by a wife and two young children, who were at the hospital along with his parents and in-laws, Acevedo said at the news conference.

“Jason will be missed but we will carry him in our hearts and in our memories. We will forge ahead as a department & as an Air Unit, because Jason would demand it of us. When knocked down this man always got back up,” the chief said in a statement accompanying the release of Knox’s name.

The pilot, whose name wasn’t immediately released, underwent surgery and was “very banged up,” but police were hopeful he would survive, Acevedi said, noting that investigators still didn’t know what caused the crash.

There were no injuries to anyone on the ground at the apartment complex, a Acevedo told reporters.

The helicopter was supposed to assist with a search for bodies in a nearby bayou, which was prompted by a tip that the police chief characterized as “probably a bogus call — we don’t know.”

The officers were trapped in “mangled” wreckage before being cut out by city firefighters who worked for about an hour, Acevedo said, praising the fire department as “phenomenal.”

Acevedo identified two silver linings at the first news conference: While the wreckage was “pretty significant,” it didn’t catch fire, and the helicopter avoided striking occupied apartment buildings. It did clip the Biscayne at Cityview complex’s clubhouse, he said.

The police department is shutting down flights until it has a chance to reassess in the coming days, and will be relying on the Texas Department of Public Safety and Harris County Sheriff’s Office for flight support in the interim.

Acevedo identified the helicopter as “75 Fox.”

“It’s pretty ironic that yesterday we graduated a class and we had Fox fly out because we had COVID, so we couldn’t do your traditional graduation so we wanted to do something special,” Acevedo said. “And if somebody had told me that a few hours later that we had an aircraft down and we’d lose a really good man, I would have said ‘No way.’”

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration will investigate, Acevedo said, while the police department conducts a parallel homicide investigation.

Turner, the mayor, called on the people of the city “to continue to lift up, number one, both families, but especially lift up the family of the police officer who has died this morning. And then at the same time lift up the entire HPD family.”

Acevedo noted that shots rang out across the street from the scene at around 3 a.m. Six people were taken into custody, he said. Acevedo stressed that police had no information indicating that the helicopter might have been taken down by hostile action.

China Lied, People Died: Five Eyes Report Details CCP Coronavirus Cover-up

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) intentionally destroyed evidence and covered up news about the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak to the “endangerment of other countries”, a leaked intelligence report has found.

The report, a product of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zeeland, found that the Chinese regime went about “disappearing” whistle-blowing doctors, censored news about the outbreak, destroyed samples of the virus in laboratories, and refused to hand over samples to international scientists, delaying the ability to manufacture a cure for the virus.

The intelligence dossier, leaked to Australia’s Saturday Telegraph, found that as early as December 31st Communist officials began censoring terms such as “Wuhan Unknown Pneumonia”, “Wuhan Seafood Market”, and “SARS variation”.

On January 1st the wet market in Wuhan was closed and disinfected with bleach, thereby eliminating the possibility of understanding the origin of an outbreak there.

Later that week the health commission in the local Hubei province ordered laboratories to stop testing for the virus, as well as calling for the destruction of any samples of the coronavirus. The following day, the National Health Commission in China ordered that all samples of the novel coronavirus either be moved to secure facilities or be destroyed while introducing a “no-publication order” about the virus.

The report chastised the communist regime for its “deadly denial of human-to-human transmission” and also took aim at the World Health Organization (WHO) for towing the CCP’s line on the virus.

“Despite evidence of human-human transmission from early December, PRC [People’s Republic of China] authorities deny it until January 20th,” the report stated.

“The World Health Organization does the same. Yet officials in Taiwan raised concerns as early as December 31st, as did experts in Hong Kong on January 4th,” the report added.

The report also confirmed that the controversial Wuhan Institute of Virology laboratory had indeed been working on coronaviruses in bats, with one strain being a 96 per cent genetic match for the Covid-19 virus that has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people globally.

The government of Australia is currently placing the likelihood that the coronavirus emerged from the Wuhan lab at around 5 per cent, however, intelligence agencies in the United States consider the possibility much higher and are actively pursuing the theory, with President Donald Trump claiming that he has seen evidence that the virus originated in the Chinese laboratory.

Far-Left Antifa Arrested for Plotting Armed Attack on French Police

French police arrested two far-left Antifa extremists who were armed with firearms and plotting an attack on police officers.

The two individuals were arrested simultaneously in the commune of Corbas and the municipality of Bourg-en-Bresse, located north-east of the city of Lyon.

The elite French police tactical unit Research, Assistance, Intervention, Deterrence (RAID) undertook the operations that led to the arrests after investigators had learnt the pair had acquired firearms to carry out an attack, LyonMag reported on Thursday. The leftists are said to have prior criminal records and to be aged around 50.

The leftist arrested in Corbas was detained alongside another man whose apartment he was living in. The latter individual was released after proving that the many weapons found in his home were purchased legally.

The alleged plot against the police comes after members of the “ACAB Collective” made death threats against police officers in December, sending letters to the personal addresses of officers.

“ACAB” — or “All Coppers Are Bastards” — has become a familiar slogan used by far-left Antifa across France, Germany, the United States, and other countries.

In November of last year, a female Antifa extremist using the name “Marie ACAB-Land” was arrested in Paris at the first anniversary of the Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vest) movement after it was claimed she had been spying on police officers. The 21-year-old had previously been arrested in Toulouse for documenting and photographing officers at another protest.

Attack plots against police in France by leftists are not new. An attack was foiled last year when five Antifa were arrested in August. They were allegedly plotting an attack on a hotel in Biarritz during the G7 conference, with some sources alleging they wanted to burn the hotel down with the officers inside.

As Citizens Try To Scrape By During Pandemic, Dem Mayor Tries 32% Property Tax Hike

Democrats never miss an opportunity to stick it to the American people with taxes — no matter the situation.

And that is precisely what the mayor of Nashville, Tennessee, proposed doing while many of his constituents are out of work.

Mayor John Cooper pushed for a 31.7 percent property tax increase and major cuts because, he said, the city is faced with “the greatest financial challenge” it has had in a lifetime, the Tennessean reported.

“This is a crisis budget,” he said as he gave a frightening outlook for the financial future of the city.

And he is correct: This is likely the “greatest financial challenge” the city has faced in modern history.

But it is also the greatest financial challenge many of his city’s residents have faced in a lifetime, and raising taxes on them to that degree is not going to help.

“Cooper’s $2.44 billion budget proposal is about $115 million more than this year’s budget,” the Tennessean reported.

“After two deals to bring in a quick influx of cash faltered last year, Nashville’s house of cards collapsed, leading to a $42 million shortfall.”

Nashville was in a financial hole before it was hit with a major storm and then the coronavirus pandemic.

City grants to nonprofits would bear the brunt of Cooper’s proposed new budget, the Tennessean reported. The mayor had ruled out cuts to cost-of-living adjustments for city employees.

“In the end, hard, hard decisions have to be made,” he said. “Everybody is sacrificing in this budget.”

But while city employees will be keeping their jobs, property-owning taxpayers will be taken to the woodshed by the proposed budget.

“It’s an insult to small businesses in Nashville that are literally at best on their knees, but most are on the ground. It’s like getting kicked in the gut with a steel-toed boot,” local restaurant owner Will Newman told WKRN-TV.

“This will absolutely crush whatever restaurants are left, crush it. Small businesses in Nashville are on life support and you know our plea now is to metro council: Do the right thing and propose an alternate budget that is balanced in its approach and not shocking to the core.”

District 19 Councilman Freddie O’Connell said he has received many calls from restaurant owners who are concerned about the proposed increase.

“Thinking about a sharp property tax increase right now is really, really troubling to me,” he said.

“A small business by sometime next year is probably going to see their rent increase as they also try and deal with an economy that’s struggling to regain its footing.”

No one who lives in a city with a Democratic mayor should ever be surprised when tax increases are proposed.

The simple solution to eliminate that issue is to stop voting for Democrats.

NATO data was one of the last metrics still being publicly offered

Trying to find proper metrics to gauge the Afghan War has been a challenge for awhile now. Analysts really muddle through with publicly offered information, and even people like the US Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction (SIGAR) struggle, with officials preferring they not be too informed on the state of affairs.

SIGAR’s latest quarterly reported revealed how tough it has been, noting that one of the last sources of data, NATO’s stats on Taliban attacks, are now being withheld both from the public and from the SIGAR office.

Instead of proper numbers, NATO simply told SIGAR that the Taliban “increased attacks against Afghan forces to levels above seasonal norms” in March. This is, to reiterate, not being backed up by any hard data.

It’s also not clear if it is true, as previous comments from Afghanistan suggested that violence was, if higher than they’d hoped after the US-Taliban peace deal, still down markedly from the situation before the peace deal.

Belgian Doctors Warn About “Massive and Reckless Deployment of Wireless Technologies”

Since 2017 doctors and scientists have been requesting moratoriums on 5G deployment (see 1, 2, 3). Since 2018 there have been reports of people and animals getting sick where it’s been turned on (see 1. 2, 3, 4). There are other valid reasons to NOT want 5G in addition to biological and environmental health risks. Some cities and countries have already taken action against it including banning it, passing ordinances (see 1, 2), etc. Unfortunately, many still have not including the U.S. despite opposition from the military.

Rabat – Belgian doctors and health professionals have signed an opinion piece warning against wireless technologies during the pandemic, putting a special emphasis on 5G.

“Faced with the massive and reckless use of wireless technologies, we health professionals ask the government to apply precautionary measures to protect the population and more particularly the most vulnerable groups, including pregnant women and children.”

The 434 doctors and 900 health professionals who signed the opinion referenced how Belgian telecommunication operator Proximus launched 5G in 30 municipalities around Brussels amid the fight against COVID-19.

“This seems indecent to us at a time when the Belgians must fight together to try to overcome the human drama which concerns us all,” the opinion piece reads.

The document also complained about organizations publishing articles to defend 5G technology and claim it is not dangerous.

Numerous conspiracy theories have linked the spread of COVID-19 to 5G, causing experts to assert radio frequencies do not transmit viruses. The Belgian doctors are not arguing radio frequencies can spread the virus but that 5G carries other health risks.

As the world is forced into accepting greater and greater levels of government control in all areas of life, remember that nothing in politics happens by chance. There is a science to creating empires. Tomes have been written on the techniques of controlling masses of people.

Three important axioms stand out: people are much easier to control when they love their slavery, people in fear are very easy to control, and individualism is dangerous to the state.

During a prophetic interview with journalist Bill Wallace in 1958, Aldous Huxley commented on what he foresaw as a potential future for the United States and the world.

Huxley’s classic dystopian novel, Brave New World, was written almost 90 years ago in 1931, prior to World War II, and his insight is still highly relevant today. We are seeing in real-time the emergence of a global, technocratic super state, of which pharmaceutical companies play a critically important role, and terrorism is always a lurking background threat.

Huxley, as introduced by Wallace:

A man haunted by a vision of hell on earth. A searing social critic, Mr. Huxley 27 years ago wrote Brave New World, a novel that predicted that someday the entire world would live under a frightful dictatorship. If Huxley was able to see all of this coming almost 90 years ago and describe it so well in Brave New World, what are we missing?

He was able to make these predictions because he understood that mass control is the most studied science of the world’s wealthiest and powerful people. He also understood human nature and the nature of government.

…obviously the passion for power is one of the most moving passions that exists in man; and after all, all democracies are based on the proposition that power is very dangerous and that it is extremely important not to let any one man or any one small group have too much power for too long a time.

Today, over 40 million Americans regularly take antidepressants, a testament to the omnipresence of the pharmacological state. Huxley foresaw this being a critical tenet of control, for people need to love their slavery, and new drugs can really help with that.

To Wallace, he states:

In this book of mine, Brave New World, I postulated a substance called Soma, which was a very versatile drug. It would make people feel happy in small doses, it would make them see visions in medium doses, and it would send them to sleep in large doses.

…this is the pharmacological revolution which is taking place, that we have now powerful mind-changing drugs, which physiologically speaking are almost costless.

Furthermore, he spoke about the need to disrupt the natural thought process of human beings, accessing their subconscious minds, so that their emotions instead of logic will lead them. Huxley foresaw advanced forms of propaganda being used to hack the mind’s of the masses.

[They will do it]… partly by these new techniques of propaganda.

They will do it by bypassing the sort of rational side of man and appealing to his subconscious and his deeper emotions, and his physiology even, and so, making him actually love his slavery.

I mean, I think, this is the danger that actually people may be, in some ways, happy under the new regime, but that they will be happy in situations where they oughtn’t to be happy.

With the state of national media and the clear biases they project onto the population, it’s hard to imagine a more propagandized environment in America; however, the rise of internet censorship foreshadows an even darker future for free thought and free speech.

Homeland security scientist confirms that natural sunlight kills coronavirus

The best and simplest cure for the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) might just be going outside, as natural sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) rays that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) science and technology advisor William Bryan says easily destroy viruses.

During a recent press briefing at the White House, Bryan explained how UV rays from the sun are powerfully antagonistic against the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), inhibiting its ability to survive, let alone take hold and spread.

A study that looked at the three different types of UV light given off by the sun – A, B, and C rays – found that UVC in particular destroys certain types of genetic material in humans, including viral particles. Based on this, the study found that UVC light can effectively inactivate microbes like the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19).

“Our most striking observation to date is the powerful effect that solar light appears to have on killing the virus, both on surfaces and in the air,” Bryan is quoted as saying about the study’s findings.

“We’ve seen a similar effect with both temperature and humidity as well, where increasing the temperature and humidity or both is generally less favorable to the virus,” he added.

In an ordinary 70-75 degree (Fahrenheit) environment with 20 percent humidity on a non-porous surface, the half-life for the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) is about 18 hours. Increasing the humidity to 80 percent, however, decreases that half-life to six hours, while adding natural sunlight into the mix decreases it to just two minutes.

This would all suggest that simply being in the sun more can help to reduce the risk of Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) infection and transmission, as viruses simply cannot coexist with natural sunlight.

An African refugee-turned-New Hampshire state representative and Joe Biden supporter resigned after criticizing Tara Reade and casting doubt on her sexual assault claims against the Democrat frontrunner.
