"The U.S. Treasury market is showing increased sensitivity to the tweets of President Donald Trump, with signs that algorithmic and high-speed traders are retooling models to take the social media posts into account, according to an analysis by JPMorgan Chase & Co.

The bank created the “Volfefe Index,” a reference to the president’s mysterious covfefe tweet of 2017, to track the correlation between Treasury yields and Trump’s tweets. The sensitivity has since increased, with one measurement jumping by more than 60% since JPMorgan introduced the index in September, according to its analysts.

Volatility in the Treasury market linked to Trump’s tweets has surpassed that linked to traditional sources of monetary and economic policy announcements, as measured by the Baker, Bloom & Davis Policy Uncertainty Index, JPMorgan said.

“This intuitively fits the mood of the political moment, where policy decisions are frequently communicated via that channel with limited preliminary coverage or analysis in public media,” wrote interest-rate strategists led by Josh Younger."

"Every American should be shocked at the treatment of Gen. Michael Flynn, an accomplished military officer who made his reputation on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Flynn was a casualty of the campaign waged against candidate and President Trump by the Washington establishment, with the Department of Justice as the tip of the spear.

It was a forgone conclusion for many anti-Trump individuals inside of government that something transactional must have happened between the Kremlin and the candidate to give the New York billionaire his election victory over Hillary Clinton.

Intelligence officials were looking at Flynn for signs of collusion or coordination with Russia. They found nothing on him and agents were requesting an end to the investigation in early January 2017 but FBI leadership jumped in and ordered agents to interview him anyway.

They brainstormed how to approach him. According to notes unearthed last week, Bill Priestep, the FBI’s former head of counterintelligence, questioned in a note, “What’s our goal? Truth/Admission or to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired?”"

"SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco’s police chief said the city’s rank and file will wear neutral face coverings to defuse a controversy that was sparked when officers sent to patrol a May Day protest wore masks adorned with the “thin blue line” flag.

The union representing workers at an Alberta meat-packing plant, the site of one of North America's largest COVID-19 outbreaks, continues to fight to prevent the facility from reopening on Monday as planned.

A total of 1,510 cases of COVID-19 in Alberta are now linked to the outbreak at the Cargill plant, located near High River, according to a spokesperson for Alberta Health.

Nearly half of the company's 2,000 staff, 917 workers, have tested positive. Cargill announced the plant would close on April 20, after a worker died of COVID-19.

"The plant shouldn't reopen unless it's safe," said Thomas Hesse, president of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 401. "In recent days, large plants in the United States that have been closed for two weeks have reopened and the number of diagnoses doubled after some plants reopened."

The union surveyed more than 600 workers in four languages over the weekend; 85 per cent reported they are afraid to return to work and 80 per cent said they do not want the plant to reopen Monday.

UFCW is seeking a stop-work order from Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and has also filed an unfair labour practice complaint against both the Cargill plant and the Government of Alberta."

"Senators have not been in the Capitol in full force since March 26, but when they make their return Monday evening, lawmakers will be facing a full slate of coronavirus-related priorities.

Unlike previous legislative pushes during the pandemic remarkable for the rare shows of bipartisanship and speed the battle over the next phase of coronavirus aid is already marked by political acrimony, which is sure to slow legislative action.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer both agree that a fourth piece of legislation is needed to address the enveloping health and economic crises, but that is about as much common ground as the two leaders appear to have found so far.

McConnell, R-Ky., has emphasized the need for a "targeted response" which addresses holes and shortcomings in previous coronavirus legislation, particularly once lawmakers have had a chance to see how that funding has been dispersed and put to work. But he’s drawn a "red line," demanding that the next bill include liability protections for health care workers and businesses."

"SEOUL, South Korea — The U.S.-led United Nations Command sent a team to the tense Korean border area on Monday to investigate gunfire from the North Korean side the day before, as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States believes the shots “were accidental.”

North Korea has not responded to a message sent asking for an explanation about Sunday’s shooting, according to the South Korean Defense Ministry.

The U.N. Command, which administers the area and is charged with enforcing the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War instead of a peace treaty, said a multinational special investigation team was dispatched to the site of the shooting in a central part of the Demilitarized Zone.

The team was accompanied by Swedish and Swiss members of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission who were acting as observers, according to the command, which is led by Gen. Robert Abrams, who also commands some 28,500 U.S. service members stationed in South Korea.

“The investigative team will assess the events that took place and produce a report based on their findings to determine if a violation of #Armistice occurred,” the UNC said in a tweet.

It said no further comment would be issued “until the investigation is complete and the report has been provided to the appropriate authorities.”

Four bullets fired from the North hit the wall of the South Korean guard post in the central area of Cheorwan, prompting South Korean troops to respond by firing 20 rounds of warnings shots and to issue broadcast warnings as well, according to South Korea’s military."

"TALIBAN ATTACKS: The Taliban are claiming responsibility for an attack last night on an Afghan government military post in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province, which the group said killed dozens of Afghan troops. The Afghan government says only one person was wounded in the bombing, according to Reuters.

The Sunday attack is the latest in what has been a sharp uptick in violence in the two months since the Taliban signed an agreement with the United States, under which the U.S. would begin pulling out its troops in return for a promised reduction of violence.

According to Reuters, since then, the Taliban have mounted more than 4,500 attacks in Afghanistan, including a more than 70% increase between March 1 and April 15 compared to the same period a year ago.

A Washington Post report cited figures from Afghanistan’s National Security Council showing that the Taliban have carried out an average of 55 attacks a day since March 1 — which has doubled the number of casualties among Afghan security forces."

"Tehran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman accused Washington of acting “illegally” in their efforts to influence the UN Security Council, adding Iran would not be “seeking to exit the 2015 nuclear deal” the US pulled out of in 2018.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said Iran’s response would be “proportionate” after the US said last week it was “hopeful” the UN Security Council would extend the arms embargo on Iran before it expires in October.

The Trump administration has taken a harder line against the Islamic Republic after withdrawing from the deal, which relaxed economic sanctions in exchange for Tehran halting its nuclear program in 2018.

“The United States is not a member of the nuclear deal anymore,” Mousavi said. “Iran’s reaction to America’s illegal measures will be firm.”"

MARINETTE - The U.S. Navy has awarded Fincantieri Marinette Marine a contract to build the service's new frigate.

The contract for the lead ship and options for up to nine others would be worth $5.5 billion if all options are exercised.

"This is a massive win for northeast Wisconsin, for America, and for the free world," said U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Green Bay, a member of the House Armed Services Committee.

U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, called it a "big win for our made-in-Wisconsin economy right now and it will support thousands of skilled workers at the Marinette Marine shipyard."

The move will bring an additional 1,000 jobs to Marinette, Baldwin said.

Gallagher said it will create more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Fincantieri’s guided missile frigate, FFG(X), is designed as a multi-mission small, surface combatant, Gallagher said in a news release. It is based on the FREMM European multi-mission frigate, according to USNI News.

Marinette Marine has a history of shipbuilding contracts with the Navy, having built at least 10 Freedom variant littoral combat ships. Vice President Mike Pence visited the shipyard in November as he pushed for passage of a North American trade deal.

For more than a decade, Marinette Marine and another shipyard in Mobile Alabama have built littoral combat ships — small speedy, shallow watercraft. That work has supported thousands of jobs, and Marinette recently delivered its 10th littoral combat ship, or LCS.

Since its inception more than 15 years ago, the littoral program has been dogged by criticisms ranging from cost overruns to the ships lacking firepower and survivability for naval warfare.

The $360 million littoral ships have fallen out of favor as the United States faces increased risks of open-ocean warfare with China and Russia and the program has been cut back.

The decision to curtail the LCS program could also result in the decommissioning of the first four vessels — USS Freedom, Independence, Fort Worth and Coronado.

The Navy has set its sights on acquiring frigates, a bigger and more combat-capable warship. The frigates are estimated to cost $900 million each.

Fincantieri Marinette Marine was competing with three shipbuilders in Alabama, Mississippi and Maine to win frigate orders that, over time, could easily top $10 billion.

LCS is one of the largest shipbuilding programs in the history of Marinette Marine, which has built ships in northeast Wisconsin since the 1940s. The company was acquired by Italian yacht-maker Fincantieri in 2009, and its proposed frigate design is based on an Italian warship — but with more than 95% American-made materials and components.

Trenton Councilwoman Robin Vaughn on Saturday let loose a stream of expletives and homophobic insults against the New Jersey city's mayor, who is gay, after a disagreement between the two about funding for nonprofit organizations during a conference call, according to a report.

In audio obtained by The Trentonian, Vaughn, other members of the Trenton City Council and Mayor Reed Gusciora were discussing efforts to manage the city during the coronavirus pandemic when Vaughn and Gusciora got into a confrontation on "do-nothing" charity organizations getting city money and launched into an angry tirade over the phone.

As the call descended into further antics, with Gusciora and Vaughn arguing over whether one particular nonprofit is effective at its mission, another voice on the phone asked, "Can somebody get control of this?"

Vaughn called Gusciora a "motherf—ing drug-addict pedophile, that's what you are."

"You need to get the f- out of the office and get the f- out of Trenton," she continued. "I've seen young boys coming out of your house."

Gusciora then called Vaughn "embarrassing" and asked other members of the city council how they can "put up with this."

The profanity-laced shouting match lasted more than 30 minutes and ended with an argument over council members' reelection prospects.

Vaughn signed off the call by telling one council member to "help pack [Gusciora's] bags and suck his d— while you're at it."

President Trump’s latest executive order, “Securing the United States Bulk-Power System,” is the fourth executive order he has signed consistent with his strong Buy American principles. It enables the Department of Energy to swiftly take steps to defend the United States bulk-power system against attacks – cyber and otherwise.

Under current government procurement rules, companies subject to the influence of foreign adversaries (as defined within the context of the executive order) are allowed to compete for – and often win – government contracts to supply these components. The absence of adequate supply chain controls in our current procurement rules provide opportunities for adversaries to create vulnerabilities in our power system because each of these components may be vulnerable to foreign sabotage in its own way.

With some components, the risk is hardware-based. For example, components may be purposefully made with inferior materials designed to fail prematurely, and possibly intentionally.

With other components, the risk comes from exploitation of software vulnerabilities, such as intentionally designed back doors that would allow adversaries access to control systems or other equipment necessary for running the power system. For example, viruses and other malware could cause equipment to fail, or operate outside of parameters, thereby disrupting the reliable electricity that propels our economy and supports our national security. Local or wide-area intentional electromagnetic interference is also a concern.

In signing this latest executive order, President Trump has directed a set of strong actions to aggressively address the threats to America’s bulk-power system. These risks are particularly grave as a number of components in service on the system have already exceeded their life expectancy and will need to be upgraded or replaced.

I think one thing that may be targeted by this, is the monopoly big utilities refusing to interconnect with small power producers. Such as a homestead with micro-hydro

Or a small town with a small modular nuclear reactor (SMR)

And I believe this EO would also apply to the central control equipment that connects to all the smart meters which were installed because of the UN's Agenda 2030 to bypass Federal and State governments by targeting municipalities.

Of course, SMR is not the only type of power generation. There is also LENR, redox flow battery systems, fuel cell systems, and just plain local natural gas generators too. It becomes impossible for a foreign power to control the US power system when the small number of huge utilities lose control over the system. This EO could lead to open (as in public/non-secret) interconnect systems, policies, and processes. It would also lead to new technology because the process of switching from a broken power source to several alternative ones should be more automated and safe than it currently is. The current system risks cascading failures, but we have knowledge in the telecommunications networking industry on how to avoid those.
