-Convict-for-violent-crimes-SkateOrDie, an ADULT runs up and tries to disarm the kid, a potentially deadly attack. This pulls the kid off balance and he is on his back, struggling to get on his feet. SkateOrDie can't disarm him, so he beats him with his skateboard, a potentially deadly attack.

-Kid defensive shoots SkateOrDie to end the attack.(PoM#9) SkateOrDie stumbles off.

-While this was happening, adult convicted felon Sneaky-Felon is approaching the kid with a gun drawn. -Kid gets up and kneels at Sneaky-Felon and CHECKS ON SNEAKY-FELON then makes sure someone is attending to him. Then he calmly resumes trigger discipline(PoM#12) (again, so noticeable with blue gloves) and weapon down, hanging neutral on the sling…. and calmly walks to police. (Pom#13)

-Kid raises his off-hand and shows it back and front as he approaches police to show he has nothing in that hand (PoM#14) and is no threat to them.

This. This right here is the culmination. If this kid wasn't 17 I'd swear he was white hat alphabet/SEAL/something. Who has that kind of PoM? at 17 years old? without practicing scenario after scenario on the cement block range training facilities?

I've seen soldiers and cops under fire who couldn't keep control of themselves like this kid did. Not without experience. If this is how we're breeding Gen X, we can't lose.

And there is not one inch for gaslighting to get through. Not one. Everything was caught frame by frame by frame. Every possible narrative they could have come up with… is pre- BTFO. This is brilliantly perfect. too brilliantly perfect. Im not complaining—its our win. But wow. It could not have coincidentally worked out any better.

'Come up with more money': Pelosi not budging on virus aid stalemate with Trump

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi won’t back down on her demand that Republicans agree to at least $2 trillion in the next round of coronavirus aid, a signal that a weekslong impasse will not end soon. The California Democrat questioned at her weekly press conference, “Why should there be a bill that has far less than what the public needs?” Pelosi was expected to talk by phone Thursday afternoon to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, who told reporters in the Capitol on Saturday that he was trying to meet with her in person, but she was unavailable. The two sides abandoned meeting in person earlier this month after days of closed-door meetings did not yield a compromise. Pelosi has since then refused to meet with Meadows or Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin unless they agree to her demand that the negotiations start at a minimum of $2 trillion in overall spending, which is a non-starter for the GOP. “They have to move,” Pelosi said when a reporter pointed out the White House has not agreed to the $2 trillion after weeks of futile talks. “They are just going to have to come up with more money.”

Senate Republicans introduced a $1 trillion coronavirus aid package in July. House Democrats passed a $3 trillion aid bill in May. Pelosi has since raised the price of the House aid proposal to $3.7 trillion and is calling on the GOP to “meet halfway” on cost. Pelosi said the health and economic impact of the coronavirus requires a massive federal spending bill. Congress has already passed $3 trillion in coronavirus aid since March, and much of it remains unspent. Republicans have little enthusiasm for another big spending bill, but many are willing to back the $1 trillion GOP proposal. They argue Pelosi's bill includes spending unrelated to the coronavirus. Pelosi said Thursday the GOP proposal offers far too little to help the nation cope with the continuing outbreak. “We need a flood of money for this,” Pelosi said. “We have a pandemic and the economic consequences of again and again bad numbers in terms of unemployment today. And they're coming in with an eyedropper.”

U.S. Marshals Find DOZENS of Missing Children in Georgia

Washington, DC – The U.S. Marshals Service Missing Child Unit, in conjunction with the agency’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and Georgia state and local agencies, led a two-week operation in August in Atlanta and Macon, Georgia, to rescue endangered missing children.

“Operation Not Forgotten” resulted in the rescue of 26 children, the safe location of 13 children and the arrest of nine criminal associates. Additionally, investigators cleared 26 arrest warrants and filed additional charges for alleged crimes related to sex trafficking, parental kidnapping, registered sex offender violations, drugs and weapons possession, and custodial interference. The 26 warrants cleared included 19 arrest warrants for a total of nine individuals arrested, some of whom had multiple warrants.

“The U.S. Marshals Service is fully committed to assisting federal, state, and local agencies with locating and recovering endangered missing children, in addition to their primary fugitive apprehension mission,” said Director of the Marshals Service Donald Washington. “The message to missing children and their families is that we will never stop looking for you.”

These missing children were considered to be some of the most at-risk and challenging recovery cases in the area, based on indications of high-risk factors such as victimization of child sex trafficking, child exploitation, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and medical or mental health conditions. Other children were located at the request of law enforcement to ensure their wellbeing. USMS investigators were able to confirm each child’s location in person and assure their safety and welfare.

The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 enhanced the U.S. Marshals’ authority to assist federal, state, and local law enforcement with the recovery of missing, endangered or abducted children, regardless of whether a fugitive or sex offender was involved. The Marshals established a Missing Child Unit to oversee and manage the implementation of its enhanced authority under the act.

In 2019, the USMS helped recover 295 missing children based on requests for assistance from law enforcement and has contributed to the recovery of a missing child in 75 percent of cases received. Additionally, of the missing children recovered, 66 percent were recovered within seven days of the USMS assisting with the case. Since its partnership with NCMEC began in 2005, the agency has recovered more than 1,800 missing children.

“When we track down fugitives, it’s a good feeling to know that we’re putting the bad guy behind bars. But that sense of accomplishment is nothing compared to finding a missing child,” said Darby Kirby, Chief of the Missing Child Unit. “It’s hard to put into words what we feel when we rescue a missing child, but I can tell you that this operation has impacted every single one of us out here. We are working to protect them and get them the help they need.”

This initiative was the culmination of several months of planning and coordination between the USMS, NCMEC, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia Office of the Attorney General, Georgia Department of Family and Children Services, Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

The counterintelligence and economic espionage efforts emanating from the government of China and the Chinese Communist Party are a grave threat to the economic well-being and democratic values of the United States.

Confronting this threat is the FBI’s top counterintelligence priority.

Thousands Of Swedes Receive False-Positive COVID-19 Results — Via Faulty Test Kits From China!

At least 3,700 people in Sweden received false-positive COVID-19 tests — from faulty testing kit that came from China.

The kit from BGI Genomics could not distinguish between very low levels of the virus and a negative result, Reuters reported.

“The supplier must adjust the performance that is required for this test to be used,” Karin Tegmark Wisell, the head of its microbiology department, said.

The test kit has been widely exported to other countries, she added, but could not give further details. BGI Genomics, two of whose subsidiaries are on a U.S. economic blacklist of companies implicated in human rights violations regarding China’s treatment of Uighurs, could not immediately be reached for comment.

It received emergency use authorization from U.S. authorities for its coronavirus testing kits in March and got an Emergency Use Listing from the World Health Organization in May. The Swedish labs that evaluate the tests have adjusted their methodology. The agency could not say how many tests had been done using the kit but only a minority of cases appeared to be involved, when the virus is at very low levels.

Sweden was one of the few European nations that did not order lockdowns. To date, there have been 86,891 confirmed infections and 5,814 deaths from the virus, according Reuters. “Of note,,” the news agency wrote, “deaths, infections and ICU admissions have been falling in recent weeks as the government explores easing their already-lax coronavirus restrictions, such as large public gatherings over 50 people and sporting events.”

Biden overlooks Ferguson in claiming no 'racial riots,' National Guard under Obama

Biden compared the state of the country during President Obama's second term with Trump's first

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden accused President Trump of being part of the problem Thursday as violence, unrest and racial tension remain prevalent across the country.

In an interview with MSNBC, the former vice president compared the state of the country during President Obama’s second term with Trump's first, but appeared to overlook multiple major events that took place during the Obama-Biden administration.

"For the last four years we weren't having riots, racial riots," he said of his second term with Obama. "When they occurred, we didn't have to call in the National Guard."

Biden appeared to overlook high-profile instances of violent protests and unrest across the country, including in Ferguson, Mo., following the 2014 police shooting of Michael Brown. As violence overtook the St. Louis suburb, Gov. Jay Nixon did indeed call in the National Guard.

"Tonight, a day of hope, prayers, and peaceful protests was marred by the violent criminal acts of an organized and growing number of individuals, many from outside the community and state, whose actions are putting the residents and businesses of Ferguson at risk," Nixon said in an August 2014 statement describing events very similar to how the Trump administration has characterized recent violence in the U.S. "I am directing the highly capable men and women of the Missouri National Guard to assist ... in restoring peace and order to this community."

That November, the National Guard was posted again when violence broke out after a grand jury voted not to indict Officer Darren Wilson for Brown's death. After the decision, violent protests also broke out in Oakland, where dozens were arrested.

Then in April 2015, the city of Baltimore experienced nights of rioting, looting and arson in the wake of the death of Freddie Gray, 25, in police custody. The Maryland National Guard was called up, the first time for a civil disturbance in the state since 1968. A nightly curfew was imposed, and more than 200 people were arrested.

And in September 2016, protests in Charlotte, N.C., over the death of Keith Lamont Scott, 43, turned violent. North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency and called in the National Guard after Charlotte's police chief said he needed the help.

An indictment is sometimes filed under seal and kept sealed until the defendant appears. The indictment is kept sealed so as to not tip off the defendant. In some districts, indictments are initially sealed as a matter of course. Once the defendant has appeared, the indictment can be unsealed. If the defendant cooperates with the government’s prosecution of others, who may be defendants in the same case or defendants in cases with other case numbers, then the case may re-main sealed because of cooperation. Sometimes an indictment remains sealed after the defendant appears because no one thought to unseal it.

In a multi-defendant case, it is possible to seal the prosecution against one defendant while the prosecution against another defendant is not sealed. For this project, only cases sealed as to all defendants were counted as sealed cases. In a few of these, the court kept the case sealed until all defendants appeared, which presumably would require either the explicit or implicit consent of those defendants who did appear.

Sometimes the government asks the court to dismiss a sealed indictment against a defendant who has not yet appeared. Perhaps the government has decided not to prosecute the defendant after all, or the government has decided to prosecute the defendant with a different indictment or in a different jurisdiction. In a few cases, the sealed indictment was transferred. It is not clear whether such indictments should remain sealed permanently.

Powell highlighted the benefits of a strong labor market, particularly for many in low income communities

Among the policy shifts that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell discussed in his speech Thursday morning was how the central bank will focus more on lower-income segments of the country when setting new monetary policies.

In connection with this new focus, the Fed will slightly alter how it views unemployment versus inflation.

Powell noted in his remarks that in the past the Fed worried that falling unemployment levels would lead to rising inflation – but, going forward, the central bank will not consider that as a negative effect. Presumably, this would expand the Fed’s definition of “full employment” – meaning a condition where almost no one is jobless, especially lower-income and deprived communities. (However, the definition of ‘full employment’ has varied over the years)

“With regard to the employment side of our mandate, our revised statement emphasizes that maximum employment is a broad-based and inclusive goal,” Powell said during the virtual symposium. “This change reflects our appreciation for the benefits of a strong labor market, particularly for many in low- and moderate-income communities.”

Inflation has been low for much of the past decade – below the Fed’s 2% target.

Powell explained why prolonged low inflation is bad for the economy – a counter-intuitive concept for many people, he conceded.

“After all, low and stable inflation is essential for a well-functioning economy,” he said. “And we are certainly mindful that higher prices for essential items, such as food, gasoline, and shelter, add to the burdens faced by many families, especially those struggling with lost jobs and incomes. However, inflation that is persistently too low can pose serious risks to the economy. Inflation that runs below its desired level can lead to an unwelcome fall in longer-term inflation expectations, which, in turn, can pull actual inflation even lower, resulting in an adverse cycle of ever-lower inflation and inflation expectation.”

An ingredient found in mosquito spray can kill COVID-19, scientists say

Citriodiol, is used in the insect repellant, Mosi-guard

British scientists found that a common ingredient in insect repellant was successful in killing the virus that causes COVID-19.

According to a United Kingdom Ministry of Defense release Wednesday, scientists found that Citriodiol, an ingredient in the repellant spray, Mosi-guard, was proven to be effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a preliminary study put on by the country's defense laboratory.

In the study, the insect repellant was applied to the virus directly as a liquid drop and also applied to a latex "synthetic skin" prior to its contact with the virus. In both cases, the repellant was effective at reducing the virus.

Now scientists at the U.K.'s Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) say they are sharing their preliminary findings so that others can further research the ingredient's effectiveness.

Sky News reported that Britain's Armed Forces were given a supply of the repellant in April in the hope that it might provide a protective layer against the virus.

At the time, Jacqueline Watson, managing director of Citrefine International Ltd, which produces Citriodiol, said: "What we can say is that we do feel there is a very good chance it could work against this virus but it does of course need to be thoroughly tested."

The outlet noted that repellents containing Citriodiol are not thought to be sufficient enough to protect people from the virus on their own, but thus far have been used as an additional layer of protection along with face masks and hand washing.

According to Citrefine's website, Citriodiol is naturally sourced ingredient derived from the leaves and twigs of the eucalyptus citriodora tree and produced by "accelerating the oil's aging process that naturally occurs in the leaf."

It is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use as an insect repellant.

A woman abused as a child by a paedophile imam who fled the UK to avoid prison has slammed police for failing to arrest him - even though they know where he is.

Hafiz Rahman, 60, escaped to Bangladesh three years ago after being found guilty of abusing two children at his mosque in the West Midlands in the 1980s.

Detectives were unaware he had a second passport, but it can be revealed officers have now located him and are consulting with the Crown Prosecution Service for an extradition warrant.

But one of the victims, who was abused by Rahman for five years from the age of seven in the late 1980s, told MailOnline she was terrified he could be still targeting children.

‘The police let him escape the first time,' she said. 'This must not happen again. Every extra minute he is free means he could take off again.

‘He needs to be arrested straight away. I know they have found where he is. I can’t understand why he isn’t in chains and on a flight back with the police.

‘He is a horrible, evil man and my worry is that he is continuing being this fake righteous imam and is doing to kids in Bangladesh what he did to me.'

The recently married now 42-year-old went on: ‘He must be laughing at us over here.

'The police neglected to find out that he had access to a second passport and then all that time and money was wasted on getting him convicted and he just took off.

‘He was found guilty of sexually abusing me and another girl and I believe there would have been many more victims too scared to tell anyone. '

Rahman, a father of seven and grandfather of 10, was arrested in a police raid in 2015 after a MailOnline journalist worked with one of the victims to track him down.

She had gone to police a year before saying she had been abused daily between the ages of seven and 11, but was told Rahman was believed to be abroad.

However, he was still officiating at a mosque in Dudley, living locally and detectives were informed.

After a five day trial, Rahman was found guilty of five charges of indecent assault at Wolverhampton Crown Court on October 8, 2016.

He had repeatedly sexually abused two young girls at Queen’s Cross mosque in Cradley Heath, West Midlands, during religious studies in the late 1980s.

During his trial he feigned illness and his defence team told the court he was too unwell to attend the final two days.

As his passport had been confiscated he was allowed home as he was not considered a flight risk.

The night before he was due to be sentenced, police visited him at home to make sure he was complying with his bail conditions.

But they did not know he had a second passport and was secretly making plans to flee and he bought a one-way ticket to Bangladesh from an agency.

He was sentenced in absentia to 11 years imprisonment and made to sign the sex offender’s register with a protection order enforced banning him from working with children again.

Judge Nicholas Cartwright told the court: ‘There was no need to be suspicious that he would not attend his sentencing hearing so no warrant was issued for his arrest after he was convicted.’

In one video recorded in Kenosha before the shootings and posted on social media, a teen who identifies himself as "Kyle" explained that he went to the center of the city on Tuesday evening with the intention of assisting police in dealing with rioters.

A Facebook page titled "Kenosha Guard" contained multiple vows to protect the lakeside city in a strong show of force, on behalf of what they described as outnumbered police. The page has since been taken down.

"Any patriots willing to take up arms and defend out (sic) City tonight from the evil thugs?" according to one post Tuesday on the Kenosha Guard page. "Nondoubt (sic) they are currently planning on the next part of the City to burn tonight!"

The group planned to convene at 8 p.m. at Kenosha's central park for an event dubbed "Armed Citizens to Protect our Lives and Property." Their presence was to last through the night.

On Wednesday morning, a statement on the Kenosha Guard page read, "We are unaware if the armed citizen was answering the Kenosha Guard Militia's call to arms. Just like with the shooting of Jacob Blake, we need all the facts and evidence to come out before we make a judgement. God Bless and stay safe Kenosha!"

But its real significance is that it signals the most decisive lurch to the left in economic policy in at least four decades.

Freeland has firmly established herself as Trudeau’s Ms. Fix-It during their five years in power, handling President Donald Trump on trade and the energy-rich western provinces on their grievances. She’s now being tasked with nothing less than remaking the country’s socio-economic architecture.

As she put it in her inaugural news conference, Covid-19 offers “a fabulous opportunity for our country” to craft an “equitable” and “green” recovery. This echoed Trudeau’s own promise “to get through this pandemic in a way that gives everyone a real and fair chance at success, not just the wealthiest 1%.”

That’s a refrain increasingly heard all over the globe as the pandemic accelerates a surge in income inequality that began decades ago. For Freeland, it has long been a source of great concern. In 2012, she penned “Plutocrats,” a book that examines the growing divide between rich and poor and helped put her on Trudeau’s radar.

Making her vision a reality will mean using her consensus-building skills to parry resistance from business, provincial governments and a wing of the Liberal caucus that’s wary of huge deficits.

“She’s got a tough few months ahead of her but she brings a lot of good things to the table and I don’t think you can question her commitment and her fortitude,” said Scott Clark, a former senior official in Canada’s finance department.

Her first announcement as finance chief was a C$37 billion ($28 billion) package in the works before she took over to help the jobless and people who can’t work because they’re caring for family members whose lives have been disrupted by Covid-19. The government will unveil the next elements of its agenda in a Sept. 23 speech to open a new session of parliament.

Freeland showed her grit in the contentious renegotiation of the North American trade deal. The stakes were huge: Canada sends about three-quarters of its exports to the U.S. But the final deal was seen as a victory for her, with Canada making mostly minor concessions to Trump.

The trade scuffle established Freeland as Trudeau’s most reliable minister and made her a logical choice when the prime minister fell out with Bill Morneau, who resigned last Monday after tensions between the two broke into the open.

Morneau, as one of the most fiscally conservative members of Trudeau’s cabinet, fought at times against a prime minister’s office that was preoccupied with announcing Covid-19 financial aid as quickly as possible, sometimes with little economic analysis. Trudeau’s government is on track to run a record budget deficit of about C$343 billion this year – 16% of gross domestic product. It could go even higher, potentially exceeding the 18% gap expected in the U.S.

It’s a major expansion of the federal government along the lines of the one overseen by Trudeau’s father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who increased program spending and deficits in the early 1980s to combat a recession.

Morneau’s departure and Freeland’s appointment indicates “a damn-the-torpedoes, full-steam-ahead fiscal policy response,” according to David Rosenberg, founder and chief economist of Rosenberg Research & Associates Inc. in Toronto.

The era of heavy borrowing won’t end quickly, Rosenberg said in an interview. “Anybody who thinks we will grow out of these deficits has to get off the tequila pretty quickly.”

Freeland is a more natural frontwoman for a government focused on inequality than Morneau, a wealthy former executive whose wife is part of the family that controls Canada’s C$10 billion McCain Foods Ltd. empire.

“We are living in an age of surging income inequality, particularly between those at the very top and everyone else,” she said in a speech in 2013, about five months before winning a seat in the House of Commons for Trudeau’s party, which was then in opposition.

“The dystopia that worries me is a universe in which a few geniuses invent Google and its ilk and the rest of us are employed giving them massages.”

Freeland, while not ultra-wealthy, has been part of that same globe-trotting elite since her career as an editor at the Reuters news service and the Financial Times. Her book’s acknowledgments include Eric Schmidt, George Soros, Jeff Immelt, and David Rubenstein on a list of people who “helped me to understand their world and some have become friends.”

A senior official in Trudeau’s government described Freeland as the intellectual muscle behind policy decisions to tackle inequality. She supports Trudeau’s vision of using the Covid-19 economic recovery plan as a vehicle for more reforms to help close a widening income gap, said the aide, who asked not to be named.

But it’s Freeland’s political skill, more than her ideology, that landed her the most difficult job in Canadian politics.

She has garnered a reputation as an effective problem solver who listens. An important part of her toolbox is using her charisma to disarm opponents and the media, as she did throughout more than a year of tough Nafta talks. That will be important in a role that inevitably involves making enemies within the government and the bureaucracy – something she has largely avoided doing so far.

Ever since a debt scare in the early 1990s, Canada’s major parties have been aligned in favor of limited deficits and modest borrowing. It’s one of only two Group of Seven countries to retain a AAA assessment from S&P Global Ratings.

But Covid-19 has shattered that political consensus as Canada follows the global trend of governments borrowing to stimulus their economies because of the shock of the pandemic.

The question is what combination of policies Freeland and Trudeau will focus on. One line of thinking says they will go for large-scale investment in renewable energy and other green initiatives, selling it as a job-creation package that can help Canada get past its reliance on exporting oil and gas.

Provincial governments, however, will balk at any attempts to move into their jurisdiction on social programs. And many Liberals are uncomfortable with so much red ink.

Business leaders, whose relations with the Trudeau government have been fraught for years, also worry the government’s recovery plan won’t give serious attention to fixing the nation’s long-term competitiveness problem.

“People know this money has to be paid back and the best social program is a job,” said Goldy Hyder, president and chief executive officer of the Business Council of Canada.

More than 100 former staff members for Senator John McCain are supporting Joseph R. Biden Jr., a show of support across the political divide that they hope amplifies the “Country First” credo of the former Arizona senator.

Many of the onetime McCain aides who signed the letter share his hawkish foreign policy views and recoil from Mr. Trump’s “America First” politics, which Mr. Salter called his “coddling of dictators or disinterest in our alliances.”

We should interject that in the late Senator McCain's twisted Manichean worldview it was not at all "Country First" to begin with, more like "Which country to invade first?"

“We are going through a difficult time,” Champagne told reporters on a teleconference from Beirut, detailing his efforts to press for the release of the Canadians as the extradition case against Huawei Technologies Co.’s chief financial officer proceeds in Vancouver. “I would not necessarily make a link between that discussion and the Canadian or the Chinese position when it comes to working on global health.”

While CanSino issued a statement Thursday saying its partnership with Canada “has not been terminated,” the National Research Council appears fed up with bureaucratic delays.

In an email Wednesday, the agency said the Chinese government introduced changes regarding the export of vaccines after the partnership agreement was reviewed and signed. “The process is not clear to the NRC,” it said. “We have no indication of when or if this will occur.”

Champagne also said he was hopeful of progress on the detained Canadians after what he described as a “robust discussion” with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi this week in Rome. The 90-minute meeting Tuesday evening, which was not previously scheduled, came together with the help of the Italian government.

“I’m cautiously optimistic that our voice has been heard, and I’m looking forward to improvement on the consular side,” Champagne said.

A man wanted for killing his two daughters in Irving in 2008 has been captured, the FBI and Irving Police Department announced Wednesday evening.

A man on the FBI's Most Wanted List for slaying his two daughters in "honor killings" outside an Irving hotel in 2008 has been captured, the FBI and Irving Police Department announced Wednesday evening.

Yaser Abdel Said is accused of shooting and killing his two daughters, 18-year-old Amina and 17-year-old Sarah. Investigators believe he was taking them to dinner when he shot them in the back of a taxi cab outside the Omni Hotel in Irving.

Said was taken into custody "without incident" by FBI SWAT in Justin, Texas, on Wednesday, according to an FBI release. Initially in federal custody, he will be transferred to Dallas County, the release said.

“This man brutally murdered, shot to death his two daughters in his taxi cab," Irving Police Chief Jeff Spivey said. "We have tirelessly followed every lead never losing hope that we would one day locate and arrest Yaser Said."

The FBI said they also arrested two relatives of Said in Euless for harboring a fugitive, his son, Islam Said, and his brother, Yasim Said, and they believe there are others who helped him evade capture.

“We do expect that there were others who provided aid and comfort to this fugitive for a long period of time," FBI Special Agent in Charge Matt DeSarno said.

Said has been on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted fugitive list since 2014. FBI had placed a reward for tips and believed he may have still had ties to North Texas. The FBI said he frequented diners like Denny's and IHOP.

The FBI classified the shootings as "honor killings."

In the recorded 911 call, one of the girls is heard saying her father shot her.

Police believe Yaser Said was angry they were dating boys who were non-Muslim and killed them.

It was a high-profile case and there are still many details some are discovering more than a decade later.

"He followed them everywhere and he recorded their every move,” said Ruth Trotter, a family friend, of home videos that show the father with his two teen daughters before their violent deaths.

In one of the videos, Yaser appears to be stalking his daughter Sarah at her work.

“She smiled at the customer," he says.

“Baba she has to do that. It’s part of her job,” Amina replies to her father.

“She’s in trouble,” he retorts.

Problems with their father went back years.

When they were younger, the girls told police he was sexually abusing them.

In one of the videos, he gawks at the girls as he rolls the camera and zooms in on their bodies.

The girls told people they were scared of what he might do one day.

"I knew the fear and threat was real all the time," said Ruth Trotter, whose son dated Amina. "I mean, she told us all the time that her dad would kill her."

Finally, in December 2007, their mother, Patricia, decided it was time to take her daughters and leave Said.

The girls and their mother hid in Oklahoma for a few days. But then, on New Year’s Eve 2007, Patricia went back to Yaser.

Amina begged not to go.

“Amina says she was never going back,” Trotter said.

But, Patricia insisted.

On Jan. 1, 2008, Yaser forced the girls to go with him to dinner.

Police say he drove them in a taxi cab he was borrowing from a friend to the Omni Hotel in Irving, where they say he shot his daughters.

Amina was shot twice in the chest. Sarah, the younger daughter, was in the backseat. She was shot nine times.

Sarah managed to call 911 for help. She named her father as her killer.

"My dad shot me," she told the dispatcher. "I’m dying. Stop it. Stop it.”

"You hear her last breath," Trotter said of the call. "She was fighting till the very end."

After that call, there was a frantic search for the girls, but the technology was limited at that time and the phone could not be traced.

Det. Eric Curtis believes Yaser did not want the girls dating outside the Muslim faith. It’s called an honor killing.

"I think that frustrated him and he could not handle that," Curtis said. "And ultimately that’s why he decided to kill them."

Majority of voters plan to vote in-person this year despite pandemic, poll finds

Just over a third plan to vote by mail, a significant increase from years past.

A solid majority of registered U.S. voters plans to vote in-person during the presidential election this year, despite the ongoing pandemic that has kept Americans away from public place and larger gatherings, according to a new Just the News Daily Poll with Scott Rasmussen.

The interest in going to polling stations to cast a ballot comes even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues its course throughout the country, though daily new cases in the U.S. have been declining steadily for over a month.

"By way of comparison, roughly 21% of votes were cast by mail in 2016," Rasmussen said. "Thus, the polling data suggests a very significant increase in voting by mail. However, most will still vote in person."

Noting the partisan divide in responses, Rasmussen pointed out that "most Republicans (77%) and Independents (56%) plan to vote in person. However, Democrats are evenly divided – 46% say in person and 46% by mail."

Among Independent voters, 13% were unsure how they would vote, while 8% of Democrats and 2% of Republicans also expressed uncertainty, Rasmussen also pointed out.

"That could possibly suggest a very modest turnout advantage for the GOP," he said. "In normal times, those who are not sure how they will vote are somewhat less likely to vote. However, during the pandemic, this may also simply reflect a wait-and-see attitude."

The survey of 1,200 Registered Voters was conducted by Rasmussen using a mixed-mode approach from August 20-22.

BERLIN (Reuters) - European Union foreign ministers on Thursday sought sanctions against Belarus to pressure President Alexander Lukashenko to hold new elections as the country’s opposition appealed to German Chancellor Angela Merkel for help.

Eager to support mass protests against Lukashenko’s 26-year iron rule, EU ministers are considering travel bans and asset freezes on up to 20 people responsible for a crackdown on demonstrators two weeks after an election they say was rigged.

“The announcement of sanctions has not led to any change in behaviour in Belarus,” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told reporters, referring to the threat of sanctions made by EU governments after the disputed Aug. 9 election.

The EU, which has an arms embargo on Belarus, eased in 2015 economic sanctions on Belarus that were first imposed in 2004, seeking better relations with Lukashenko, but now hopes to move quickly to reintroduce so-called restrictive measures.

Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu said they should be imposed on officials who helped rig the election, those who ordered the crackdown and those accused of violence against demonstrators. Minsk authorities deny that the election outcome, which handed Lukashenko 80% of the vote, was rigged.

Lukashenko himself is not expected to be sanctioned at this stage.

“The discussion will be important because the level of sanctions, whom to sanction, has to be something that is fully considered,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who is chairing the Berlin meeting, said, referring to concerns that sanctions can be challenged in court if not properly prepared.

Belarus is the ally closest to Russia of all former Sovietrepublics, and Lukashenko’s fate lies in the handsof the Kremlin, which must decide whether to stick with him ashis authority has ebbed.

Opposition presidential candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, 37, who fled to Lithuania after the election her supporters say she won, appealed to Germany’s chancellor to mediate a solution.

Merkel could “contact Lukashenko directly or explain the situation from her point of view to the Russian president”, she told the German newspaper Die Welt.

The NHL faced criticism after other sports leagues postponed games.

NHL players have forced the league to cancel Thursday night's Stanley Cup playoff games, according to several reports.

The National Hockey League received criticism after they played playoff games on Wednesday. The NBA, MLB, MLS, and WNBA postponed some or all games on Wednesday following the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The NHL will reportedly postpone Thursday's playoff games after the Hockey Diversity Alliance requested that the league suspend all playoff games. The Hockey Diversity Alliance, which was created in June, has a mission of "eradicating systemic racism and intolerance in hockey."

"Earlier today, the HDA formally requested that Commissioner Bettman and the NHL suspend all playoff games today to allow players and fans to reflect on what happened and to send a message that human rights must take priority over sport," the Hockey Diversity Alliance said in a statement.

San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane and Minnesota Wild defenseman Matt Dumba outlined the plan to cancel Thursday's game by calling more than 100 players who were in the playoff cities of Toronto and Edmonton, according to TSN hockey analyst Pierre Lebrun.

"The PLAYERS took a stand today, they stepped up," Kane tweeted. "Proud of my fellow nhl PLAYERS for their action."

KENOSHA, Wis. - Evers requested other states, under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), to bring additional National Guard troops, equipment and resources to Kenosha amid continuing protests in the wake of the police shooting of Jacob Blake Sunday.

Any National Guard troops from other states mobilized to support Wisconsin would do so in a "State Active Duty status – not in a federal status," Evers said. Those troops would fall under the operational control of Wisconsin's adjutant general during their mobilization but remain under their respective state's administrative control.

Wisconsin National Guard troops have been on duty in Kenosha since Aug. 24 when authorities in Kenosha made an initial request for assistance.

First shooting

While Mr. Rittenhouse is being pursued by the group, an unknown gunman fires into the air, though it’s unclear why. The weapon’s muzzle flash appears in footage filmed at the scene.

Mr. Rittenhouse turns toward the sound of gunfire as another pursuer lunges toward him from the same direction. Mr. Rittenhouse then fires four times, and appears to shoot the man in the head.

Second shooting

Mr. Rittenhouse seems to make a phone call and then flees the scene. Several people chase him, some shouting, “That’s the shooter!”

As Mr. Rittenhouse is running, he trips and falls to the ground. He fires four shots as three people rush toward him. One person appears to be hit in the chest and falls to the ground. Another, who is carrying a handgun, is hit in the arm and runs away.

Mr. Rittenhouse’s gunfire is mixed in with the sound of at least 16 other gunshots that ring out during this time.

MIAMI —The Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton (WMSL 753) crew offloaded approximately 11,500 pounds of cocaine and approximately 17,000 pounds of marijuana, Thursday, worth more than $228 million.

The drugs were interdicted in the international waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean off the coasts of Mexico, Central and South America, and in the Caribbean Sea. Coast Guard cutters and U.S. Navy ships seized and recovered contraband during 13 interdictions of suspected drug smuggling vessels:

The cutter Hamilton crew was responsible for nine interdictions, seizing approximately 9,700 pounds of cocaine and 9,000 pounds of marijuana.

The cutter Resolute (WMEC 620) crew was responsible for one interdiction, seizing approximately 1,100 pounds of marijuana.

The USS Nitze (DDG 94) crew with embarked Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment Team 406 was responsible for two interdictions seizing approximately 1,700 pounds of cocaine and approximately 6,100 pounds of marijuana.

The interdictions, including the actual boardings, are led and conducted by members of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Semites are a language group not a religious group. They spoke (and still do) Semitic languages, especially the Canaanite and later Aramaic dialects of Syria, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and the Palestinian territories.

The Western world today is seething with accusations of “anti-Semitism”, a threatening term with nasty connotations. Before 1879 nobody had heard of “anti-Semitism”, although hard feelings towards Jews as a religious group had existed for many centuries. One thinks immediately of the atrocities of the first Crusades (1096), the massacre at York in 1190 and the expulsion of Jews from England by Edward I in 1290 (only to be allowed back in 1657 by Oliver Cromwell). But discrimination against Jews existed long before, in various countries and for various reasons.

Then along came a German agitator and journalist, Wilhelm Marr, who coined the expression “anti-Semitism” knowing full well that it embraced all Semitic peoples, including Hebrews, Arabs and Christians of the Holy Land. It wasn’t long before it was twisted to become a metaphor for hostility only towards Jews based on a belief that they sought national and even world power. More recently, holocaust denial and criticism of the state of Israel’s vile behaviour have been considered anti-Semitic. Anti-Zionism too is claimed to be anti-Semitic because it singles out Jewish national aspirations as illegitimate and a racist endeavour – which of course they are, as Israel’s recently enacted nation state laws prove.

Indeed, some hardcore Israel flag wavers regard any pro-Palestinian, pro-Syrian or pro-Lebanese sentiments to be anti-Semitic, even though those peoples are constantly victims of Israeli military aggression.

A catch-all smear weapon

The hijacking of the term anti-Semitism and its fraudulent conversion into a propaganda tool for defending the Zionist project has enabled brazen attacks on our rights to free speech and attempts to shut down peaceful debate on Israel’s crimes. The word anti-Semitism, as now used, is a distortion of language and a deliberate misnomer larded with fear and trembling for those touched by it. This prompted Miko Peled, the Israeli general’s son, to warn a Labour Party conference that

they are going to pull all the stops, they are going to smear, they are going to try anything they can to stop Corbyn… the reason anti-Semitism is used is because they [the Israelis] have no argument…

And so they did. Jeremy Corbyn, a genuine anti-racist, critic of Israel and champion of Palestinian rights, was soon gone. He was the only British leader who might have reduced Israel’s sinister influence on UK policy. But his Labour Party, like the cowards they are, surrendered to Israel lobby pressure and helped bring him down. Israel’s pimps at Westminster and in local parties across the country were able to chalk up a famous victory.

They even managed to force the party to adopt the discredited International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism and incorporate it into the party’s code of conduct. The new leader [Keir Starmer] is their obedient stooge. He has publicly bent the knee, tugged the forelock.

African Migrant: Cemetery Vandalism Was Offering to Satan

Two men have admitted to desecrating and vandalising 63 graves in a French cemetery earlier this month, claiming the act was an offering to Satan to help their musical careers.

The pair, aged 23 and 24, were arrested last week on the 18th of August and later confessed to the crime, with one of the men, a Cameroonian migrant named Fabien, saying that the destruction in the cemetery, which took place on August 9th in Lannemezan was a “pact with the devil to succeed in music.”

The migrant admitted to being in contact with a marabout, traditionally a Muslim scholar in Africa, in Mali who he claimed advised him “to remove what represents God and replace him with 666,” and to “make offerings to being opposed to God,” La République des Pyrénées reports.

The other man involved, named Jordan, said Fabien wanted to “invoke demons,” although it was pointed out that he participated in “incantations” himself.

The two men are said to be well-known to police in the Hautes-Pyrénées department and were arrested after one of the pair dropped his mobile phone at the scene of the crime and another left blood after injuring himself during the rampage.

The total damage to the cemetery is estimated at around 30,000 and prosecutors are looking for a prison term of 18 months for Fabien and 12 months for Jordan. In court, a statement of Fabien’s was read stating he could not rule out reoffending.

The attack on the cemetery is just the latest act of anti-christian vandalism or violence in France, which sees an estimated three anti-Christian attacks per day, according to a report released last year by the Central Criminal Intelligence Service (SCRC) of the gendarmerie.

Creeping Thucydides Trap: Esper Vows "Won't Cede An Inch" In South China Sea After 4 PLA 'Warning' Missiles

The Pentagon revealed Thursday that China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) "warning" to the US on Wednesday involved the firing of “four medium-range missiles into [an] area between Hainan and the Paracel Islands,” a defense official was quoted in FT.

Among them included nuclear-capable DF-26 missile and the anti-ship DF-21D ballistic missile. Beijing said they demonstrated the PLA's ability to deny outside military access to the South China Sea.

The missiles were fired in response to the major incident from Tuesday, wherein China's PLA military angrily charged that a US U-2 spy plane entered a 'no-fly zone' off China's coast while the PLA conducted live-fire military drills.

The PLA has since ratcheted up its drills, with FT reporting Thursday the military "announced it was conducting another live fire exercise in waters off the eastern city of Taizhou, bringing the number of drills off its coast this week to five."

Defense Secretary Mark Esper, meanwhile, vowed the US would never “cede an inch” in the Pacific and accused China of ultimately putting soldiers' lives at risk with its hugely escalatory actions.

Ironically this is precisely what China accused the US of doing on Tuesday with the U-2 flyover. It's defense ministry had issued what appeared veiled threat saying an “unexpected incident” could have easily resulted over the US spy plane operation.

Esper said in Wednesday comments: “To advance the CCP’s agenda, the People’s Liberation Army continues to pursue an aggressive modernization plan to achieve a world class military by the middle of the century.”

He said this on the same day the Trump administration blacklisted 24 Chinese companies also along with targeted individuals related to their construction activities which assist the PLA in their South China Sea territorial ambitions and expansionist claims.

“This will undoubtedly involve the PLA’s provocative behavior in the South and East China Seas, and anywhere else the Chinese government has deemed critical to its interests,” Esper added.

Sen. Kamala Harris, the 2020 Democratic vice presidential nominee, pledged she and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden would stand with peaceful protesters if elected to the White House in a wide-ranging prebuttal to President Trump's Republican convention acceptance speech. "The Republican convention is designed for one purpose: to soothe Donald Trump’s ego, to make him feel good. But here's the thing: He’s the president of the United States. It’s not supposed to be about him," Harris said Thursday in Washington, D.C. In a 20-minute address, Harris criticized Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, claiming he "froze" when he needed to take action. The mostly virtual convention this week hasn't focused on the coronavirus, with White House chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow even referring to the pandemic in the past tense. "He was scared, and he was petty and vindictive," Harris said of Trump, ripping the president's preoccupation with the state of the stock market and dismantling Obamacare. The California Democrat added, "The president he has been is the president he will be, but we have a chance to right these wrongs and put America on a better path forward."

Convention speakers have, among other objectives, used the platform to push a "law and order" message after Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old black man, was shot seven times in the back last weekend by a white police officer in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Blake had told the officers, who were responding to a domestic dispute, he had a knife in his car. Tensions in the community escalated this week when 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse allegedly shot three protesters demonstrating against racial injustice and police brutality, killing two and injuring another. The Antioch, Illinois, teenager has been charged with first-degree murder. Harris, the first African American and South Asian woman to feature on a major party's presidential ticket, said the Kenosha shooting was a reminder that "a black person in America has never been treated as fully human." Peaceful protests and protesters should be defended and not confused "with those looting and committing acts of violence," said Harris, a former California attorney general and San Francisco district attorney. "Make no mistake. We will not let these vigilantes and extremists derail the path to justice. Here's my promise to those mothers and fathers and all who stand with them: In a Biden-Harris administration, you will have a seat at the table, in the halls of Congress, and in the White House," she said. Trump is expected to accept the Republican presidential nomination Thursday on the White House South Lawn with a searing indictment of Democratic standard-bearer Biden. “At no time before have voters faced a clearer choice between two parties, two visions, two philosophies, or two agendas," Trump says in his prepared remarks. “At the Democrat convention, you barely heard a word about their agenda. But that's not because they don't have one. It's because their agenda is the most extreme set of proposals ever put forward by a major party nominee."

The Legend of Elizabeth Báthory: The Blood Countess

Some say that Countess Elizabeth Báthory, considered by many to be the world’s worst female serial killer, was the true inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. After all, legend has it that she bathed in the blood of at least 650 servant girls she had tortured and killed. She was said to be so evil that villagers kept their daughters in hiding for fear that Elizabeth would take them. Her gruesome activities even earned her such names as “the Infamous Lady” and “the Blood Countess.” This is her story.

Erzsébet Báthory, more commonly known in the Western world as Elizabeth, was born in 1560 to one of the most powerful Protestant families in Hungary at the time. She was the daughter of Baron George Báthory and Baroness Anna Báthory, who were both Báthorys by birth. Possibly stemming from inbreeding within her family, it is said that from an early age Elizabeth suffered from seizures, loss of control, and fits of rage. As a child, she witnessed the brutal punishments handed out by her family’s officers on their estates; one anecdote describes a gypsy accused of theft who was sewn up in the belly of a dying horse and left to die. Her family tree certainly included some disturbed kin as well. One of her uncles taught herSatanism, and she learned aboutsadomasochismfrom her aunt.

Elizabeth was married by the time she was 15 years old to Count Ferenc Nádasdy, a soldier who would go on to lead the armies of Hungary against Ottoman forces threatening Central Europe. After her marriage, the countess became the mistress of the Nádasdy estate, where the couple earned a reputation as harsh masters. Building upon her own cruelty, it is believed that Ferenc showed her some of his own ways of punishing his servants. After 10 years, Elizabeth gave birth to 3 daughters and a son.

Although the count participated in his wife’s torture activities, it wasn’t until the death of her husband in the early 1600s that Elizabeth’s true evil came to fruition. She eventually moved to one of her castles at Čachtice in northwest Hungary (now Slovakia) and began surrounding herself with a cohort of servants to help her with her torture practices. Legend has it that one day an attendant girl was brushing Elizabeth’s hair when she accidentally pulled too hard and it tugged on a snag in her hair. The countess erupted in anger, jumping up and striking the girl with the back of her hand. The strike was so hard that it made the girl bleed and some of that blood was left on Elizabeth’s hand. Later that night, Elizabeth noticed that the skin on her hand where the blood had been looked more youthful than she had seen it in many years. This gave her the idea that if such a small amount of blood could make her hand look so young, then more could restore youthfulness to her whole body. It’s said that this is when the madness began andElizabeth started to bathe in the blood of virgin girls.

Young women began to disappear from villages near and far, as well as children. Unhappy girls were lured to the castle with the prospect that they would find work there but were never seen again. When they arrived, they were locked up in a cellar as they awaited torture. Elizabeth carried out much of the torture herself, often beating the girls to death. Sometimes she would sew a girl’s mouth shut, force her to eat her own flesh, or burn her genitals. When she was too sick to get out of bed to beat them, Elizabeth would order her servants to bring up a girl to her quarters where she would bite their faces and shoulders. In other instances, she would stick needles underneath the girl’s fingertips before cutting off the fingers of those who tried to take them out. Soon Elizabeth began to run out of young women, because she had either already taken them, or the villagers had started to hide their daughters out of fear that she would take them. This is when the countess began to resort to noble girls, a decision that would ultimately lead to her demise.

After the murder of one noble girl in 1609, which Elizabeth tried to stage as a suicide, the authorities finally decided to act. During a night raid, officials searched the castle and discovered the dead bodies of young girls everywhere they looked. Some were missing arms and eyes. One body was in the fireplace, not yet fully burned. Elizabeth was taken to trial and many testified against her, including her servants as well as survivors. One of the servants said that girls were tied up and beaten to death until their whole body was black as charcoal and their skin battered and torn. One girl suffered from 200 blows before dying. Another servant admitted that she had taken red-hot fire pokers and shoved them into the mouth of one girl. She said she placed her fingers in the mouth of another and pulled until the sides split open.

Finally, after hearing countless testimonies of the appalling activities that went on behind the castle’s walls, Elizabeth and her servants were convicted on 80 counts of murder, although evidence showed that as many as 650 females may have been killed in total. Her servants were sentenced to death, but Elizabeth was imprisoned for life in a room in her own castle that was boarded up with tiny slits for food and air. Elizabeth lived for 3 and a half years before she was found dead lying face down on the floor. After her death, Countess Elizabeth Báthory went down in history asone ofthe most evil women to ever have walked the planet.

Philippines warns Beijing it will enlist US help if China attacks

A violent encounter between China and the Philippines would trigger a confrontation with the United States, according to an unusual warning from Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration. If "something happens that is beyond incursion but is, in fact, an attack on, say, a Filipino naval vessel … then I call up Washington, D.C.,” Philippine Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin said during a national broadcast this week. That’s a rare threat from Manila, as Duterte often takes a hostile tone with the U.S. while seeking to curry favor with China. Locsin was alluding to the Mutual Defense Treaty with the U.S. amid heightened tensions in the South China Sea, where China has built artificial islands and conducted military exercises to assert sovereignty over waterways claimed by the Philippines and other countries. And it comes just days after his defense counterpart dismissed Beijing’s claims. “Their so-called historical rights over an area enclosed by their nine-dash line don’t exist except in their imaginations,” Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Sunday. President Vladimir Putin spoke with Rossiya 24 TV channel, transcribed by RT News, on Thursday, indicating the worst of the virus-indued recession is over for the Russian economy.

Twitter removes fake accounts pretending to be black voters who left Democratic Party for Trump

Twitter took down two fake accounts that were spreading information about black voters abandoning the Democratic Party amid months of unrest. The removed accounts were perceived to have been run by black voters, with tweets that often went viral. One of the accounts, @WentDemToRep, got 11,000 retweets on a tweet that said they were a lifelong Democrat who was pushed to vote Republican by the Black Lives Matter movement, according to NBC News. The tweet was posted shortly after the creation of the account on Tuesday.

Two other accounts tagged by the bot, @PeterGammo and @KRon619, were also suspended on Tuesday. A tweet by @KRon619 read the user was a Democrat their entire life until July and was retweeted over 12,000 times. Other posts urging black, brown, and white people to leave the Democratic Party got over 6,000 retweets, and others attacking "the Democrat media" and protesters in cities got over 12,000 retweets. The three suspended accounts broke the social media giant's policies on spam and for engaging in "specifically, artificially manipulative behavior." The accounts used images of black men as their profile pictures, including a photo stolen from the Instagram page of Nelis Joustra, who tried to get the account removed. "I called my mom and asked her what to do because I was stressing out," Joustra said. "The only thing I could do was to report the account and tweet some tweets to tell people that I'm not the person who owns the account and that they're using me on the profile picture without asking me." Twitter previously said it would crack down on disinformation as the 2020 election draws closer.

Feds to Whitmer: Turn over COVID-19, nursing home data. She blasts back response.

The U.S. Department of Justice wants Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and three other states governed by Democrats to turn over data related to nursing homes and COVID-19 deaths.

The governor agreed to provide the data, but blasted the request, labeling it a partisan stump aimed at helping President Donald Trump's re-election bid.

In a news release Wednesday, the department said the requests were sent to states "that issued orders which may have resulted in the deaths of thousands of elderly nursing home residents."

Whitmer defended her actions, arguing the letter relies more on politics than health policy.

"The fact that this letter was sent during the middle of the Republican National Convention week to four Democratic governors should make it crystal clear that this is nothing more than election year politics by an administration that is more concerned with the president's re-election campaign than protecting Michigan seniors," Whitmer said in a statement late Wednesday.

"We will review this letter and respond as appropriate. However, Americans would all be better served if the Trump administration stopped the partisan games and focused on delivering a real plan to defeat COVID-19."

Nursing homes and other long-term care facilities in Michigan and throughout the country have been particularly hard hit by COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. As of Tuesday, the state reported 8,146 residents infected with coronavirus and 2,083 who died of COVID-19. There also have been 4,301 confirmed cases among staff, with 21 staff members dying because of COVID-19.

But the DOJ news release goes a step further, accusing Michigan and the other states of requiring nursing homes to accept patients who have COVID-19. An executive order from Whitmer allowed for people infected with the coronavirus to be transferred and isolated at nursing homes that also house people who are not infected. There is no direct evidence the policy led to illness or death, as reported by the Associated Press in June.

On May 20, Whitmer issued an executive order mandating nursing homes make “all reasonable efforts” to create separate units for residents who have COVID-19. The order also required homes to provide protective equipment to staff and not accept COVID-19 patients unless they have dedicated isolation units.

A spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services referred comment to the governor.

In addition to Michigan, the Justice Department asked for information from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The request comes two months after Republicans in Congress called on attorneys general in these same states to investigate nursing home policies, and echoes similar calls for inquiry from state-level Republicans.

LANSING – The U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday it is seeking data from Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and three other Democratic governors who "issued orders which may have resulted in the deaths of thousands of elderly nursing home residents."

Much of the data is already publicly available, but the department is evaluating whether to investigate Michigan nursing homes for possible violations of a federal law protecting the rights of "institutionalized persons," Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband told Whitmer in a letter.

At least 2,083 nursing home residents have died from COVID-19 in Michigan, accounting for nearly 1 in 3 deaths attributed to the novel coronavirus here since March.

Maryland governor authorizes all counties to reopen schools in the state

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced on Thursday that all schools can begin reopening in his state despite the coronavirus pandemic that remains. The governor's office cited improved health statistics for the move, adding that the positivity rate for the virus among Marylanders under the age of 35 declined by 44% since late July. For residents over the age of 35, the positivity rate dropped below 3%.

"As a result of our improved health metrics, every single county school system in the state of Maryland is now fully authorized to begin safely reopening," Hogan said. The Republican governor added that "there is no substitute for in-person instruction." Local school districts were given a deadline of Aug. 14 to submit their reopening plans to the state for the 2020-2021 academic year since schools first closed in March, WBAL-TV reported. Many districts have announced that the fall semester will remain taking place virtually.

State Superintendent Karen Salmon said $10 million in grant funding will be made available to help schools transition to in-person learning but encouraged districts to reevaluate their mode of instruction after the semester's first quarter. Maryland has had over 105,000 cases of the coronavirus and over 3,000 deaths.

President Donald Trump’s embrace of QAnon and the pandemic has helped propel the conspiracy into the mainstream.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Georgia congressional candidate who’s supported the far-right and baseless QAnon conspiracy theory, tweeted that she’s been invited to the White House for President Donald Trump's speech accepting the Republican nomination.

President Trump’s embrace of Greene and QAnon launched the conspiracy into mainstream political and social media circles, despite the group being linked to real-world violence and anti-semitic views.

“I don't know much about the movement other than I understand they like me very much, which I appreciate but I don't know much about the movement. I have heard that it is gaining in popularity," President Donald Trump said in an August 19 White House Press Conference.

Experts say the COVID-19 pandemic has also boosted the popularity of QAnon.

“Around March, which is when Lockdown was really impacting the US at first, there's a huge spike in people interacting with QAnon on mainstream social media," says Blyth Crawford, Research Fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence. "I think people are just finding so many more hours in the day nowadays to spend falling down rabbit holes online about conspiracy theories.”

Q Followers, which number in the millions on Facebook, get their information from Q, their anonymous online leader. QAnon holds wide-ranging beliefs, but the uniting view is that there’s a group of Democrats and celebrities who secretly control the government and are responsible for various evils, like abusing children. Q says Donald Trump will eventually expose and arrest those involved.

Experts told Newsy that at the start of the pandemic, QAnon infiltrated fringe and conspiracy groups and absorbed members as their own, who then spread Q theories.

“The pandemic has really allowed them to spread online because of the number of anti-masking and anti-shutdown groups that formed specifically on Facebook," said Sophie Bjork-James, Assistant Professor of the Practice in Anthropology at Vanderbilt University. "They're very savvy in spreading and in figuring out the best way to spread their message, and that is often through tying their interests or their interpretation of Q into other movements, and especially around saving children and anti-trafficking.”

QAnon did this by hijacking the #SaveTheChildren hashtag. It was originally connected to a charity, but QAnon started using it to make baseless claims about what celebrities they think are involved in trafficking. Interactions on Facebook posts with the hashtag have gone up over 500% since early July.

“There are people who've never heard about Q but want to do something that feels that they are contributing to helping and causes associated with human trafficking," Crawford said. "And it's not until you become more familiar with what QAnon is specifically that you figure out all these different layers. But at that point, you're already involved with the movement, which seems like a great humanitarian cause.”

That indoctrination can happen quickly. Critics say social media algorithms can lead people down QAnon rabbit holes.

“The underlying principle of the algorithms is to drive traffic. And so they're trying to kind of figure out, what do people want? The internet facilitates it," said Mike Posner, Director of the Stern Center for Business and Human Rights, New York University.

“Someone can be pro-gun, pro-hunting even, and join a pro-hunting group on Facebook. And then suddenly be exposed to QAnon. Or, same thing with someone might be suspicious of vaccinations," said Bjork-James.

Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have started removing thousands of these accounts. But experts told Newsy to effectively counter QAnon misinformation, platforms need to change how they moderate borderline content. For example, while Facebook originally blocked the #SaveTheChildren hashtag, they later reinstated it.

“The platforms have said, you know, we're going to be vigilant and they have been quite vigilant and taking down things that are demonstrably false," Posner said. "But now so much of that is sort of drifted into the political space that that even becomes complicated for them.”

Homeland Security Secretary Says Antifa ‘Absolutely’ Meets Definition Of Domestic Terrorist Group

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf offered a harsh evaluation of the anarchist group Antifa Wednesday, declaring that in certain capacities, the left-wing group “absolutely” meets the standards worthy of condemnation as a “domestic terrorist group.” “I think what we see with them individually targeting law enforcement, individually targeting certain officials for certain reasons, that is the definition of domestic terrorism,” Wolf told The Federalist, going on to explain, however, that the group’s decentralized nature makes it difficult for law enforcement to offer effective surveillance and widespread prosecution. “The issue with Antifa,” Wolf explained, “it’s not just one singular group. One Bank Finally Tells The Truth: "The Fed Policies Have Become Part Of The Problem"

In the aftermath of today's announcement by the Fed of 2% Average Inflation Targeting there were numerous hot takes (such as this one from Goldman) simplifying what the Fed just did: namely a "new" stance of allowing inflation to run high and the unemployment rate to run lower for longer, which according to BMO meant that the "Fed's dovishness appears to be in perpetuity." The reason: avoid any market tremors for the next five years arising out of fear that the Fed may unexpectedly tighten financial conditions if inflation suddenly gets hot.

What was not discussed is what the Fed did not say, namely that it is now compounding failure upon failure, and after 10 years of failed policies that were unable to spark higher wages (i.e., good inflation) while promoting a giant asset bubble, it will crush the living standard of the middle class further by running inflation hot even as asset prices scream to new all time highs. What was also not discussed is the Fed's role in the catastrophic economic situation the world finds itself in.

However, one banker did have to courage to address the elephant in the room, and that would be Rabobank's Philip Marey who in his Fed post-mortem "The Wrong Kind of Symmetry", writes that it took the Fed six years to describe symmetry of the inflation target in the Statement on Longer-Run Goals, noting that "while not completely irrelevant, it is the wrong kind of symmetry to focus on."

In one of the most overt criticism of the Fed we have read to date, Marey writes that "while the Fed’s step to make the inflation target "more" symmetric may benefit the wages of the average American somewhere beyond 2022, it does not really address the deeper problem with the role the Fed is playing in the US economy. It could be argued that the Fed’s policies have become part of the problem, instead of the solution." And, as the Rabobank strategist suggests, "at least this should be a topic for debate in the FOMC, instead of talking a whole year about whether to use an average or not."

To this all we would add is that the Fed should take a long, hard look at its prefered metric of core PCE: as we have repeatedly explained in recent years, the Fed continues to purposefully undercount inflation, and on top of that, it now has openly said it will disregard the politically palatable core PCE/CPI number just so it can continue blowing an asset bubble of epic proportions.

It was Marey's conclusion however that was the piece de resistance:

The much deeper problem for the US economy is the asymmetric impact of Fed policies on households and businesses. The Fed’s monetary and regulatory policies have contributed to a form of capitalism where the rewards are going to the 1% and the risks are borne by the 99%. The current crisis response has made it painfully clear again that the Fed’s policies benefit high income individuals and large corporations, while small businesses and low income individuals bear the burden. While the Fed likes to see itself as part of the solution to America’s economic problems, it should ask itself whether it is also part of these problems.

HuffPo White House Reporter Calls Republicans Attending Trump Speech on South Lawn, “Filthy, Diseased”

Huffington Post White House reporter Shirish “S.V.” Dáte called Republicans attending President Trump’s renomination acceptance speech at the South Lawn on the White House Thursday night, “flthy” and “diseased.”

Like many reporters concern trolling the event, Dáte was commenting about the lack of social distancing among the 1,000 attendees, most of whom were observed to not be wearing masks.

However Dáte unleashed venomous vitriol on the attendees, saying, “Trump’s not speaking for two and a half hours. Why should they have to take their seats next to their filthy, diseased neighbors already?”

Beijing says Chinese military won’t ‘dance to tune’ of US, urges Washington to quit policy of ‘anxiety and paranoia’

China’s military won’t bend to US posturing in the region, Beijing has warned, adding that Washington should abandon its current foreign policy trajectory and seek mutual cooperation.

Beijing’s relationship with the United States has become “unusually severe and complicated,” Senior Colonel Wu Qian, the spokesman for China’s Ministry of National Defense, said on Thursday, describing bilateral ties as being at a low point. The two nations established formal relations in the 1970s.

“China will not dance to the US' tune, nor will we acquiesce to its reckless behavior,” the spokesman said, warning that China will take “forceful measures” to safeguard its national interests.

He stressed the importance of maintaining communication channels between the two nations’ militaries and called for an increase in dialogue to avoid misunderstandings.

Washington should rethink its “strategic vision” in regards to China and approach the Asian power “with rationality and an open mind, and pull itself out of the swamp of anxiety and paranoia,” Wu suggested.

The comments come hours after China’s foreign ministry slammed the US for allegedly trespassing in a no-fly zone during Chinese military drills. The ministry said the presence of the U-2 spy plane in the area was a “naked provocation” and could have caused an “unexpected accident.” The US military insisted that the reconnaissance plane had not violated any international agreements or rules.

=A Russian submarine surfaced near Alaska on Thursday during a Russian war game exercise, U.S. military officials said.=

It was unclear why it surfaced.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command are closely monitoring the submarine, Northern Command spokesman Bill Lewis said.

“We have not received any requests for assistance from the Russian Navy or other mariners in the area,” Lewis said from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. “We always stand ready to assist those in distress.”

Lewis declined to provide further details about the submarine, including its proximity to Alaska. He only said it was operating in international waters near Alaska.

“We closely track vessels of interest, including foreign military naval vessels, in our area of responsibility,” Lewis said.

The Russian military exercise is taking place in international waters, well outside the U.S. territorial sea, he said.

The presence of Russian military assets in the war games caused a stir for U.S. commercial fishing vessels in the Bering Sea on Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

“We were notified by multiple fishing vessels that were operating out the Bering Sea that they had come across these vessels and were concerned. So they contacted us,” Coast Guard spokesman Kip Wadlow said earlier Thursday.

The Coast Guard contacted the Alaskan Command at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, which confirmed the ships were there as part of a pre-planned Russian military exercise that was known to some U.S. military officials, Wadlow said.

“We do appreciate the fishermen out there contacting us and letting us know, but because this is a known event, our folks are still conducting Coast Guard business as usual right now,” Wadlow said in a followup call.

The Coast Guard cutter Alex Haley is the nearest Coast Guard ship, but it’s in Dutch Harbor on a patrol break, Wadlow said. He’s not aware of any plans to send a long-range C-130 flight to the area.

According to warning notices published by Russian and American agencies, the exercises are taking place on the Russian side of the maritime boundary and involve live missile drills.

Vessel tracking information on Wednesday and Thursday showed a fleet of pollock trawlers and longliners about 80 nautical miles west of St. Matthew Island, on the American side of the boundary. Among the ships are vessels from American Seafoods and Trident Seafoods. Both companies declined to comment on the record.

Pictures taken from aboard the fishing fleet showed Russian ships close to the fleet, but the maritime boundary isn’t a hard border the way it is on land, said Ed Page, a former Coast Guard officer who now directs the Marine Exchange of Alaska, a ship-tracking service.

The United States regulates fishing within 200 nautical miles of its shores, but for other activities, anything beyond 12 nautical miles offshore is international waters.

“Some people think that boundary line is everything, but it’s really limited to only economic activities. So they can operate and do things in our waters, just as long as they’re not fishing or doing polluting,” Page said.

Turkey Refuses To Suspend Maritime Gas Exploration, Multiple Military Exercises And Manoeuvres Continue

Greece has announced plans to extend its territorial waters along its western coastline facing Italy, and held a second day of military exercises in waters where Turkey has sent a survey ship escorted by warships to explore for oil and gas, challenging Greece’s claim to maritime jurisdiction over the area.

The Turkish vessel Oruc Reis has been carrying out seismic research for oil and gas for several weeks escorted by Turkish warships. Athens, which says the ship is operating over Greece’s continental shelf in an area where it has exclusive rights on potential undersea gas and oil deposits, sent warships to observe and track the Turkish flotilla.

Both countries have sent warships to shadow each other this month in an area between Crete and Cyprus where the Turkish vessel is prospecting for potential gas and oil deposits. Greece and Turkey both conducted military exercises within the area on Tuesday (25 May).

Speaking before the national Parliament earlier this week, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Greece is planning to exercise its legal right to extend its territorial waters along its western coastline, which faces Italy, from six to 12 nautical miles.

The planned extension would not affect the territory at the centre of the Greek-Turkish dispute. But the prime minister told parliament that Greece was abandoning decades of ‘passive’ foreign policy. Turkey has warned in the past that an extension of Greek waters to 12 nautical miles in the Aegean Sea, facing the Turkish littoral, would be seen as a reason to declare war on Greece.

Mitsotakis described Turkey’s actions as ‘illegal and provocative’, adding that Athens was willing to start talks as part of a German-brokered initiative, but only if the Turkish seismic surveying work were halted. “Our position is crystal clear and can be summarized in six words: When provocations stop, talks can start,” he said during a debate on the ratification of deals Greece recently made with Italy and Egypt setting out maritime boundaries and Exclusive Economic Zones. Greece’s deal with Egypt in particular has angered Turkey.

Lawmakers ratified the Italy deal by majority vote late Wednesday. They also ratified most of the agreement with Egypt, with a vote on one article remaining to be voted upon later this week. The government holds a comfortable majority in parliament, and the article is expected to pass. LINK

Meanwhile, Turkey has accused France of exacerbating the conflict after joining joint exercises with Greece, Italy and Cyprus. President Erdogan stated on Thursday that Turkey has no intention of suspending gas exploration activities in disputed areas.

The declarations followed a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Berlin to try to persuade EU member Greece and neighbouring Turkey to return to diplomatic paths to resolve their dispute over maritime boundaries and jurisdiction.

The ministers were expected to debate a series of sanctions and other policy options that could be used to pressure Turkey to suspend drilling for energy reserves in the disputed areas of the eastern Mediterranean.

Germany has promised to act as a bridge between the two neighbours to defuse tensions, while on Wednesday US President Donald Trump held phone calls with the leaders of Greece and Turkey.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also said he was in “constant contact” with Greece and Turkey. “My message is that the situation must be resolved in a spirit of allied solidarity and in accordance with international law,” Stoltenberg said when meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. “Dialogue and de-escalation are in everyone’s interest.”

Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akara criticized France for joining Italy, Greece and Cyprus in three-day air and maritime military exercises off the eastern Mediterranean island, saying Turkey will not be deterred by the show of force, and Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy accused France of deploying fighter jets on the ethnically divided island of Cyprus under the ‘pretext’ of conducting military exercises, claiming that the deployment is a breach of the treaties reached in 1960.

France and Greece are deploying fighter jets and navy ships as part of military drills, while Cyprus will activate its air defence system to test its capabilities, the Cyprus Defence Ministry reported on Wednesday.

Turkey has also issued an advisory notice, known as Navtex, stating that it will be conducting live-fire military exercises on September 1 and 2 off the southern coast of the Mediterranean, that is, off the coast of Cyprus. LINK

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is reportedly halting investment in Indian startups, in another sign that recent deadly clashes along the countries' Himalayan border are eroding business ties between the two Asian economies.

Apart from the major online retailer, “a few” other Chinese firms are also reviewing their investment plans for India, sources have told Reuters. The companies reportedly plan to not pour any more cash for around half a year, as they waiting for things to “cool off.”

Alibaba, as well as another major Chinese tech major Tencent, have been heavily investing in Indian businesses over the last five years. While Chinese venture capital investments in India totaled over $4 billion, Alibaba alone has poured over $2 billion into Indian startups.

Chinese funds have helped over a dozen Indian businesses to become unicorns (to reach valuation of over $1 billion). According to Mumbai-based think tank Gateway House, 18 of India’s 30 unicorns, including the most valued ones – such as payment system Paytm and food delivery platform Zomato – are now Chinese-funded.

While China’s investors are putting fresh investment on hold, they have no plans to reduce stakes or exit investments, according to the recent report. One of the sources explained that this is due to the market condition and to the fact that there aren’t many buyers.

Jack Ma's Ant Group – an affiliate of Alibaba Group – has earlier hinted that it faces challenges in India due to the recent changes in the country’s foreign direct investment regulations. The company is currently preparing for its blockbuster IPO, which may become the biggest in history.

But Zelensky is hoping that Jews in particular will answer the call, in light of the country’s historical significance for Jews, a spokesperson from Zelensky’s office told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

“The president finds it particularly important to attract Jewish investors from across the world in light of the historic ties between the Jewish people and Ukraine, which has remained relevant also today with hundreds of thousands of Jewish tourists visiting Ukraine each year,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson did not wish to be named, citing presidential protocol.

China – US Tensions Continue, PLA Fires ‘Aircraft Carrier Killer’ Missiles During Drills

China has lodged a protest with the US embassy after the Pentagon sent a reconnaissance aircraft over an area where live-fire military drills were being conducted in the northern military region in the Bohai sea. China also sent another message, firing two ‘aircraft carrier killer’ missiles into the South China Sea.

The US has been accused of sending a U-2 reconnaissance plane into an area that was previously declared to be a no-fly zone to fly over Chinese live-fire military drills that were being on Tuesday (25 May), another provocative move adjacent to China’s borders that will keep tensions between Beijing and Washington high for the foreseeable future.

China’s Defence Ministry called the unauthorized U-2 flight an unsafe practice and said that it constituted a threat “seriously interfering in normal exercise activities”.

The statement warned that an ‘unexpected incident’ could have easily resulted, which presumably means the spy plane may have been targeted as a perceived threat to the military units’ security.

In a statement responding to China’s strong diplomatic and public protests, the US military said a U-2 flight was conducted in the Indo-Pacific region and it was “within the accepted international rules and regulations governing aircraft flights.

Pacific Air Forces personnel will continue to fly and operate anywhere international law allows, at the time and tempo of our choosing.” LINK

The U-2 aircraft can fly at over 70,000 feet and effectively carry out reconnaissance activity at long range, therefore it was not necessary for it to enter the no-fly zone to monitor the military exercises and it is difficult to interpret it as anything other than a deliberate provocation meant to further antagonize Beijing.

In an unusual move, this week China’s military has been conducting parallel military exercises in four separate areas, including drills in the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea and South China Sea.

Presumably as a response to the Pentagon’s derisive attitude to Chinese concerns about US military activity adjacent to its borders, which have included numerous sorties by nuclear capable long-range strategic bombers and extended manoeuvres in the South China Sea by three US aircraft carrier strike groups over the last few months, China launched two missiles – including an ‘aircraft-carrier killer’ – into the South China Sea on Wednesday morning (25 August), sending a clear warning to the United States of China’s ability to defend its territory and adjacent areas.

One of the missiles, a DF-26B, was launched from the north-western province of Qinghai, while the other, a DF-21D, lifted off from Zhejiang province in the east. Both missiles were fired into an area between Hainan province and the Paracel Islands, the South China Morning Post reported.

The DF-26 has a range of 4,000km (2,485 miles) and can be used in nuclear or conventional strikes against ground and naval targets.

The DF-21 has a range of around 1,800km, with state media describing the most advanced in the series, the DF-21D, as the world’s first anti-ship ballistic missile.

The Chinese news agency’s source said the missile launch was aimed at improving China’s ability to deny other forces access to the South China Sea, a disputed region.

“This is China’s response to the potential risks brought by the increasingly frequent incoming US warplanes and military vessels in the South China Sea,” the source said. “China doesn’t want the neighbouring countries to misunderstand Beijing’s goals.”

Earlier this month, the PLA held military exercises near Taiwan “to safeguard national sovereignty”, exercises that coincided with US Health Secretary Alex Azar’s trip to the island.

In July, China’s People’s Liberation Army conducted military exercises in the South China, East China and Yellow seas, while two US aircraft carriers conducted tactical air defence exercises in the South China Sea – manoeuvres the US said were “in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific”.

Pompeo ends Middle East tour with no further peace declarations

Pompeo's trip comes in advance of a planned visit next Monday to the UAE by an official Israeli delegation led by National Security Adviser Meir Ben Shabbat.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo returned to Washington on Thursday after a whirlwind four-day trip to the Middle East, in which he was greeted with handshakes and smiles but received no further affirmations from Arab leaders with regard to normalized ties with Israel.

“The Omani people are so warm and generous. I’m grateful for our strong partnership. Thanks to Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said for our steadfast friendship,” Pompeo wrote in an upbeat tweet from the Omani capital of Muscat on Thursday.

In an earlier tweet, he said the two had discussed “the importance of building regional peace, stability and prosperity through a united Gulf Cooperation Council.”

Pompeo arrived in the region in the aftermath of the dramatic announcement two weeks ago that Israel and the UAE planned to normalize ties. He visited Israel on Monday and the UAE on Wednesday.

An Israeli delegation led by National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat plans to visit the UAE next Monday.

There was media speculation that El Al would take the Israeli delegation and fly over Saudi territory for the first time. El Al denied the report.

US National Security Council Adviser Robert O’Brien also plans to head to the UAE next week, together with US Special Adviser Jared Kushner, US Special Representative for International Negotiations Avi Berkowitz and Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook.

Pompeo also visited Sudan, Oman and Bahrain, which are expected to follow the UAE in normalizing ties with Israel. During his visit, however, none of them gave a nod in that direction.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok on Tuesday said he was not mandated to normalize ties with Israel and asked that the issue not be linked to discussions with the US on the country’s removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

In Bahrain on Wednesday, Pompeo failed to secure a statement from Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa about normalized ties with Israel.

The US is ready to assist in the normalization of ties between Bahrain and Israel if needed, a senior US State Department official said during the Bahrain leg of the trip.

“If we can help facilitate normalization with Bahrain, we’re ready,” the official said.

Khalifa said he welcomed US efforts to achieve the Israel-UAE accord, noting “the importance of re-doubling efforts to realize a just solution which utilizes peace as a strategic option to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict,” state news agency BNA reported.

Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the PLO Executive Committee, tweeted his appreciation of Bahrain’s comments, thanking it for insisting that there must first be peace between Israel and the Palestinians, and only then can normalizing ties with the Arab world occur. This includes the idea of a two-state solution at the pre-1967 lines with east Jerusalem as its capital, he said.

Capital One Cuts Credit Card Borrowing Limits As US Reduces Support For Unemployed Americans

One month after credit card giant Capital One Financial disappointed investors after reporting losses more than $1 billion for the second consecutive quarter (with 80% of revenue coming from net interest income, of which 60% comes from the card business, the top line was hit really hard), there was more bad news. According to Bloomberg, Capital One - which is perhaps most exposed to the financial state of the US middle class of all US financial companies - is cutting borrowing limits on credit cards, and reining in its exposure as the U.S. reduces support for millions of unemployed Americans.

"Capital One periodically reviews accounts based on a variety of factors and may make changes to existing credit lines," the company told Bloomberg.

Capital One, which is third-largest US credit card lender after JPMorgan and Citigroup, has been at the forefront of offering cards to people with riskier profiles, which while boosting the company's value during expansions, has made it especially sensitive to economic downturns. Its management of credit is watched closely as a harbinger of what’s to come at other major banks according to Bloomberg, and sure enough the latest numbers were woeful: shortly after it slashed its dividend from 40 cents to just 10 cents, the company added reserves of $2.7BN in Q2, on top of the $3.6BN it added in the first quarter, making reserves 6.7% of total loans outstanding (in theory,t This should be enough to weather net charge-offs around 350bps per year in the next two years).

And while the company's 2008-2010 average was higher at around 450bps, peaking at over 500bps in 2010, the company has benefited from forbearance programs as customers are deferring auto payments but continue to pay down their credit cards, which also means less net interest income. Indeed, net interest income fell 9% QoQ (-5% YoY) as margins narrowed, making the company's NIM contraction was the worst among large peers. Margins nosedived 100bps QoQ to 5.78% - the lowest in the past decade.

All of that prompted the company to take aggressive measures ahead of what appears to be an almost certain double dip should fiscal stimulus not be extended in the immediate future. As Bloomberg notes, suspense has been mounting in the credit card industry in recent weeks, as Congress and President Donald Trump’s administration deadlocked on extending $600 in additional weekly unemployment benefits. That assistance has helped millions of households keep up with debts as the pandemic sent unemployment soaring above 10%. As we showed recently, spending by unemployed people who claim ongoing unemployment assistance from regular state programs - which amounts to some 14.5 million people - has tumbled since the July 31 fiscal cliff.
