Singapore General Election 2020: Singaporeans will go to the polls on July 10

SINGAPORE - Singaporeans will go to the polls on July 10, in a general election that will see the contest for hearts and minds waged on a drastically different battleground due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The widely anticipated announcement of the election date came on Tuesday (June 23), when President Halimah Yacob dissolved Singapore's 13th Parliament and issued the Writ of Election.

Nomination Day will be next Tuesday (June 30), with the minimum of nine days to campaign before Cooling-off Day on July 9. Polling Day will be a public holiday.

There will be nine nomination centres.

In a televised address to the nation on Tuesday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he has decided to call the general election now, while the Covid-19 situation is relatively stable, to "clear the decks" and give the new government a fresh, full five-year mandate.

After the election, the new government can focus on the national agenda - which includes handling the coronavirus pandemic, the economy and jobs - and the difficult decisions it will have to make and to carry, he said.

The alternative is to wait out the pandemic, he said, noting however that there is no assurance that the outbreak will be over before the Government's term ends next April, with the virus expected to linger for at least a year - most probably longer - until a vaccine is available.

This general election will be like no other that Singapore has experienced, he said, not just because of the special arrangements to deal with Covid-19, but also the gravity of the situation and the issues at stake.

"The government that you elect will have critical decisions to make," Mr Lee said. "These decisions will impact your lives and livelihoods, and shape Singapore for many years to come, far beyond the five-year term of the next government."

The election, Singapore's 13th since independence, is likely to again see the People's Action Party (PAP) challenged for all seats - as the ruling party was in 2015.

A total of 93 elected seats are at stake - in 17 group representation constituencies and 14 single-member constituencies.

GE2020 will be fought against the backdrop of the Covid-19 outbreak, which has been described as the most dangerous crisis humanity has faced in a very long time.

Safe distancing rules that restrict the size of public gatherings to five people mean traditional campaign staples like mass rallies cannot be held. Political parties also have to scale back the scope of their walkabouts in constituencies.

They have turned to cyberspace and social media to get their messages across to the electorate instead. Each candidate will also get airtime on national television, as part of the new, one-off constituency political broadcasts.

Observers reckon issues that will feature prominently at the hustings include the state of the economy and jobs, the Government's handling of the coronavirus situation, and setting the direction for Singapore's future after Covid-19.

The pandemic had brought economies to a near standstill as countries locked down to curb the spread of the virus. On its part, Singapore's economy is projected to shrink by up to 7 per cent this year, which would make it the worst recession since the country's independence in 1965.

The Government has made protecting jobs a key plank of its fiscal response to the crisis, as it rolled out four Covid-19 support packages amounting to some $93 billion, requiring a draw of up to $52 billion from past reserves.

This coming election will see Mr Lee lead the PAP into battle for the fourth, and what looks set to be the final, time as prime minister. He had earlier declared his intention to hand over the reins to his successor by the time he turns 70, which will be in 2022.

Former Bank Hapoalim chairman Oded Eran dies

Oded Eran, who stepped down as chairman of Bank Hapoalim on Sunday, died overnight Monday following a serious illness.

Eran served as chairman of Israel's largest bank from January 2017 until taking indefinite sick leave several weeks ago, and formally resigning earlier this week due to poor health.

Paying tribute to Eran, Bank Hapoalim CEO Dov Kotler said he was "a noble man, a brilliant lawyer who was a pioneer in the field of Israeli IPOs in the United States."

"A wise man who also knew how to take time off and study literature at university in the middle of his career. A bank director that became chairman and knew how to guide the bank and advise it at difficult times."

A 22-year-old soldier has been charged with planning an attack on his Army unit in an indictment unsealed in federal court Monday.

Ethan Melzer of Louisville, Ky., allegedly sent sensitive details about his unit, including locations, movements and security measures, to members of an extremist organization named Order of the Nine Angles, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement issued Monday.

Melzer was charged with conspiring and attempting to murder U.S. nationals, conspiring and attempting to murder service members, providing and attempting to provide material support to terrorists and conspiring to murder and maim in a foreign country.

Melzer was arrested June 10 after the FBI and Army had discovered his plot and thwarted it in late May, the statement said.

He operated under the alias of Etil Reggad, according to the indictment. (daggeR litE)

His Army unit was not identified in the indictment nor in the statement.

“As the indictment lays out, Ethan Melzer plotted a deadly ambush on his fellow soldiers in the service of a diabolical cocktail of ideologies laced with hate and violence,” John C. Demers, assistant attorney general for national security, said in the statement.

Melzer was “motivated by racism and hatred as he attempted to carry out this ultimate act of betrayal,” said Audrey Strauss, acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, where the indictment was filed.

According to the criminal complaint, Melzer deployed abroad with the army in October 2019.

He explored propaganda from multiple extremist groups, including O9A and the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), the complaint continues.

“The FBI seized from an iCloud account maintained by Melzer an ISIS-issued document with a title that included the phrase ‘HARVEST OF THE SOLDIERS,'” court records state. “And described attacks and murders of U.S. personnel in approximately April 2020.”

The HOPE Not Hate campaign, a website dedicated to counteracting the “politics of hate,” describes the Order as a group that promotes “a supernatural and hateful system of thought that condemns liberal, Judeo-Christian society.”

The private used an encrypted application to send messages to O9A and another related group called “RapeWaffen Division,” the investigators revealed, detailing “sensitive information” regarding his unit’s upcoming deployment.

In May of this year, he also sent similar information to a “purported” member of Al-Qaeda. He conveyed the number of soldiers traveling, the unit’s expected facility location and information about its surveillance and defensive capabilities, court records show.

Melzer also acknowledged that he was willing to die in order to carry out the “jihadi attack.”

According the complaint, he wrote, “Who gives a [expletive] [. . .] it would be another war . . . I would’ve died successfully . . . cause [] another 10 year war in the Middle East would definitely leave a mark.”

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said recently that she “would think very seriously about” trying to keep President Trump from holding a rally in her state.

“We know that congregating without masks, especially at an indoor facility, is the worst thing to do in the midst of a global pandemic,” she told the Associated Press (AP).

However, Whitmer added that she was not aware of the specific legal tools available to prevent a rally from happening.

“I just know we have limitations on the number of people that can gather and that we’re taking this seriously,” she said.

Wednesday, the governor rebuked the legislature and citizens who were circulating petitions that she claimed were an attempt to limit her power, according to Breitbart News.

“I want to be very clear, any attempt to strip away the powers of the governor during this time is irresponsible, dangerous, and foolish,” Whitmer said.

The Restore Freedom Initiative would amend the state Constitution to, among other things, “clarify the separation of powers, foundations and functions of government” and “guarantee the constitutional limitations of government during emergencies.”

Thursday, the governor signed an executive order to extend the “state of emergency declaration related to the COVID-19 pandemic until July 16,” according to her office’s website.

Seattle officials have decided to dismantle a six-block “police-free zone” held by demonstrators in the heart of the city for more than two weeks.

In the aftermath of two shootings – one of them fatal – Mayor Jenny Durkan announced Monday that the so-called Capitol Hill Organized Protest will be displaced and police will return to a precinct house they abandoned.

Rhode Island considers name change due to slavery connotations

What’s in a name? For the state of Rhode Island, years of acrimony over an official designation with connotations of slavery.

But change is brewing in the union’s smallest state, as Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo signed an executive order on Monday taking the "first steps" to change the state’s full name: "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations."

The "plantations" part of the name has come under increased scrutiny following widespread protests after the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

The order, Executive Order 20-48, will change the name to just ‘Rhode Island’ in official communications from the governor’s office – including future executive orders, citations and stationery letterheads. It also calls on all state executive agencies to remove the "plantations" reference from their websites.

The order does not change the state’s official name permanently — that will require voters to amend the Rhode Island Constitution, the order states.

The state Legislature has indicated it will move forward with the referendum after the Rhode Island Senate passed a measure last week calling for a statewide vote on the name change.

Ex-Wirecard CEO Markus Braun was arrested Monday night (June 22) in the latest chapter that has rocked the German payment services provider, the Financial Times reported. Braun surrendered to Munich prosecutors after a judge issued a warrant as prosecutors investigate an accounting scandal that centers on a missing 1.9 billion euros ($2.1 billion), prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old executive faces charges of accounting fraud and market manipulation designed to artificially inflate the financial technology company’s balance sheet to make it look more appealing to investors and customers, the Financial Times reported.

Braun allegedly committed the scam with others, investigators said, but no one else had been named at press time, according to the report. A lawyer for Braun did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the newspaper.

Until his resignation Friday (June 19), when an audit revealed 1.9 billion euros ($2.1 billion) were missing from two bank accounts in the Philippines, Braun had been at the top of the FinTech company since 2002, the Times reported. Since the drama unfolded, Wirecard share values have plummeted. On June 17, the stock closed at $104.50. But by the open on Tuesday (June 23), the stock had dropped to $14.25.

The company said that it was trying to determine “whether, in which manner and to what extent such business has actually been conducted for the benefit of the company,” the report said. Founded in 1999, Wirecard was once considered one of the most promising tech firms in Europe. It processes payments and sells data analytics services. The company has nearly 6,000 employees in 26 countries worldwide.

Wirecard calls itself the world’s first payment service provider to offer more than 200 local and global payment solutions, according to the company’s website. Bloomberg reported Monday that the Bank of China is one of more than a dozen commercial banks that have lent $2 billion through a facility to Wirecard. The bank is considering whether to write off roughly $90 million lent to Wirecard, and would not extend the line.

Ernst & Young, the company’s auditor, said it became suspicious of whether the money was ever deposited into the accounts. “There is a prevailing likelihood that the bank trust account balances in the amount of 1.9 billion euros do not exist,” Wirecard said at the time.

On Sunday (June 21) Wirecard’s claim to have directed the cash to BDO Unibank Inc. and the Bank of the Philippine Islands was challenged by the Philippines central bank. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said the money never entered the country.

Parents have been incensed at the publication of a learning pack for primary school children which they say “normalises paedophilia” by telling kids that ‘love has no age limit’.

The pack was produced by the Diversity Role Models organisation for children aged three to 11,and sent in an email to customers of Asda, a major supermarket chain.

According to news reports, parents were also concerned at the inclusion of a book called Beyond Magenta as recommended reading material in the Secondary pack. The book includes explicit sexual references, including: “From six up I used to kiss guys…. and perform oral sex on them. I liked it. I used to love oral.” It also references perverts touching themselves and saying ‘come here, sweetie’, reports the Daily Star.

The Safe Schools Alliance, which works with schools to ensure safeguarding, said they had been contacted by many concerned parents who had received an email about the learning pack from the George at Asda brand.

They were particularly upset that an exercise included in the Primary School learning pack included the message ‘love has no age limit’, which they claim could be seen to normalise paedophilia.

“This might be viewed as an innocent-sounding phrase, but it has a much darker meaning: it is often used in an attempt to justify the sexual abuse of children. Many groups such as LGBA and Safe Schools Alliance were quick to point out this phrase is connected to sexual abusers and the ‘Pedophile Information Exchange’, a now-disbanded organisation that was set up for the rights of adults to sexually abuse children,” wrote one commentator.

“That book is hugely inappropriate and disgusting, trying to normalise overly sexualised behaviour to the reader, so wrong and I would be absolutely shocked and disgusted to find my child of pretty much any age reading those words and taking them on board, what on earth is this?!”,one mum also wrote on Mumsnet regarding the inclusion of Beyond Magenta, reports My London.

Although Asda has a partnership with Diversity RoleModels which produced the materials, they said they were not directly responsible for the content of the pack.

An Asda spokesperson said: “The home learning packs are produced by our charity partner Diversity Role Models as part of the work they do in schools to encourage young people to challenge stereotypes and embrace diversity.”

Following the furore, Diversity Role Models said the materials would be amended.

Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday that taking down historical statues of notable American leaders is “a healthy expression” of anger against historic sins.

When asked if he agreed with President Donald Trump’s guidance that cities should be doing “more to protect monuments,” Cuomo said municipal leaders are already “making decisions.“

“The Teddy Roosevelt statue I think was less about Teddy Roosevelt but the other parts of that statue. And look, people are making a statement about equality, about community to be against racism, against slavery,” Cuomo told the outlet.

“I think those are good statements,” Cuomo said, adding that it was possible to “overdo it” but that he didn’t think that was the case in New York. “And I think it’s a healthy expression of people saying, ‘Let’s get some priorities here and let’s remember the sin and mistake that this nation made and let’s not celebrate it.’”

We should seek to preserve the ideals that made America successful.

The history of nations is mostly characterized by ethnic and racial uniformity, not diversity.

The coast of southern Mexico was rattled by a powerful earthquake on Tuesday morning that triggered a tsunami alert for Pacific coastlines along Central America.

A former Cincinnati mayor recently slammed Democrat-run cities for failing to take responsibility in black communities.

In an interview with Breitbart on Monday, Ken Blackwell said Democrats blame the violence in black communities on the “boogeyman of systemic racism.” He claimed Democrats have characterized America as a “racist nation,” which has created a “false narrative.”

Blackwell went on to say the deadly reality is black men and women are being slaughtered in several cities nationwide in numbers that can be compared to war zones in Iraq and Syria. These cities, he claimed, are all run by Democrats.

“You can’t paint safety forces with a broad brush, saying that they are riddled with systemic racism when the facts don’t bear that out,” Blackwell stated. “But what is out by the facts is that these local leaders have found some comfort in the status quo.”

In her 2016 presidential race tell-all, “What Happened,” the former first lady argues the lesson to be drawn from the classic dystopian novel is to trust one’s leaders, the press and experts.

Attempting to define reality is a core feature of authoritarianism,” Mrs. Clinton writes. “This is what the Soviets did when they erased political dissidents from historical photos. This is what happens in George Orwell’s classic novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, when a torturer holds up four fingers and delivers electric shocks until his prisoner sees five fingers as ordered.

The goal is to make you question logic and reason and to sow mistrust towards exactly the people we need to rely on: our leaders, the press, experts who seek to guide public policy based on evidence, ourselves,” she continues.

Mrs. Clinton argues the Trump administration resembles the regime portrayed in the novel.

“If he stood up tomorrow and declared that the Earth is flat, his counselor Kellyanne Conway might just go on Fox News and defend it as an ‘alternative fact,’ and too many people would believe it,” she writes.

President Trump said he has authorized federal law enforcement to arrest those caught vandalizing memorials and charge them under the Veterans’ Memorial Preservation and Recognition Act.

“I have authorized the Federal Government to arrest anyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property in the U.S. with up to 10 years in prison, per the Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act, or such other laws that may be pertinent,” the president tweeted Tuesday morning.

“This action is taken effective immediately, but may also be used retroactively for destruction or vandalism already caused. There will be no exceptions!” he added.

Obama, Biden Reunion Fundraiser Raises $4 Million So Far

Barack Obama and Joe Biden are reuniting on Tuesday for their first joint appearance of the campaign, a fundraiser that has already raised more than $4 million, according to two people familiar with the event.

More than 120,000 people have already bought tickets to the virtual event, which start at $15 and go up to $1,000, the people said. It’s the first time the former president has raised money for Biden and just his second public appearance on his former vice president’s behalf. He released an endorsement video in April after Biden’s opponents dropped out of the Democratic primary race.

“Choosing Joe to be my vice president was one of the best decisions I ever made, and he became a close friend. And I believe Joe has all the qualities we need in a president right now,” Obama said in that video.

Farage investigated by US Homeland Security over trip to attend Trump Tulsa rally

A US congressman who chairs the Committee on Homeland Security has launched an investigation into Nigel Farage after the Brexit Party leader apparently flew to America to attend a Donald Trump rally during the Covid-19 pandemic.

US Democrat representative Bennie G Thompson sent a letter to Chad Wolf, the acting secretary of Homeland Security, on Monday, requesting “all relevant documents” on the decision to “waive the travel ban for Mr Farage,” saying it raised “troubling questions” at a time of strict restrictions being enforced.

Thompson highlighted media reports that Farage had initially been “denied boarding while trying to fly from the UK to the US on Friday,” but was subsequently given the green light by the Trump administration to make the trip.

The Brexit Party leader tweeted a photo of himself on Saturday looking very cheery, with the caption: “In the USA, only twenty four hours from Tulsa” – the location of the US president’s rally over the weekend. Images later emerged on Saturday night appearing to show the 56-year-old backstage at the ‘Team Trump on Tour’ as part of the rally.

The US has barred entry to arrivals from the UK, with exemptions given to US citizens, their family members and “individuals who meet specified exceptions.”

According to the congressman, America’s Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has provided a statement to his staff, saying the Department of Homeland Security conducted a review and concluded that Farage’s travel was “permissible” as his entry to the US “would be in the national interest,” and so he was allowed to board the flight.

In his letter to Wolf, the Mississippi Democrat also requested that the Department of Homeland Security provide “all communication” since March 14 relating to Farage’s trip and documents regarding the “determination and justification” that his entry was indeed in the “national interest.”

Black man with contentious cop history risks life to save officer from burning car: 'This man is my brother through Christ'

A man with a history of negative run-ins with local and state police saved the life a police officer after a fiery crash that surely would have taken the officer's life.

Daylan McLee, who is black, was sitting in his home Sunday evening when his house shook from a nearby impact.

He heard the boom just before his house rattled and believed that a small earthquake shook the city of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, — until a relative came into his house to tell him that there was a car crash outside his home.

McLee, 31, sprinted outside, only to discover Uniontown Police Officer Jay Hanley trapped in a burning police cruiser. The flames had just begun to spread into the passenger compartment when McLee intervened and dragged Hanley from the burning wreck.

"We felt it in the house and my sister came screaming that two cars hit each other and one was a cop," he recalled.

McLee said that Hanley asked not to be moved because of an apparent leg injury. He clearly didn't see or feel the flames from the wreck spreading up to the cruiser's cabin.

"Then we started to see flames start to come inside of the car from the bottom, and I knew we had to get him out," McLee explained. "Another officer tried to assist me, and I just ripped the door open and we started dragging him across the street before the car ignited or anything serious like that."

McLee also said that there was no way he could stand by and watch the officer burn to death.

"I know this man is my brother through Christ, and I couldn't leave him behind," McLee said. "There were people outside screaming. We felt it in the house. It was like a jolt."

State police are investigating the crash.

"The investigation is going to show whether the traffic signal was working properly, whether the lights and the sirens on the vehicle were working at the time of the crash," Trooper Robert Broadwater explained. "It's still undetermined."

First responders flew Hanley to a nearby hospital for leg surgery. The driver of the other vehicle was able to walk away from the accident.

Uniontown Police Lieutenant Thomas Kolencik told WTAE-TV that there is no doubt in his mind that McLee saved Hanley's life.

"Daylan actually said, 'I'm not going to let him die.' There's just no words to describe, you know," he recalled. "We are so thankful Daylan was in the area at the time. It could have been a lot worse."

Uniontown Mayor Bill Gerke said that McLee truly cares about people and is easily the strongest man in the city.

"The day I met him is still the way he is today," Gerke said. "He cares about people, he cares about Uniontown, and that's what Uniontown is all about."

He added, "He said he's a God-fearing man, and he cares about all human beings, and no one was going to die on his watch. I'm sure he didn't wake up yesterday morning and that was on his mind that he was going to pull someone out of a burning car in the middle of Fayette Street, but thank goodness Daylan was there."

Tampa police officers 'ambushed' by hundreds of protesters, attacked with glass while trying to find a shooting victim

The police chief is calling it a 'setup'

Overhead footage of a chaotic and violent gathering in Tampa, Florida, Saturday shows police officers being driven back by large crowds of people in what the city's police chief is calling a "setup."

In a press conference following the incident, Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan told reporters that his officers were "ambushed" by the crowd of people and targeted with "bottles and glass."

"It's an ambush. I have no other way to describe it. When there are that many people out there and clearly no one had been shot. It was just a setup to get the cops there," Dugan said, according to WFTS-TV.

Officers originally responded to the scene after there were reports of shots fired with a possible victim, but when they arrived on the scene to investigate, they weren't able to locate a victim. Instead the crowd reportedly surrounded and harassed the officers, throwing objects and jumping on patrol cars.

Two officers were injured during the incident and taken to the hospital with lacerations, WTVT-TV reported. Both officers are expected to be fine.

The police chief noted the size of the crowd in his comments to the press.

"There were hundreds of them — hundreds. We ended up having to call every single police officer that was available that night to respond there, from New Tampa to South Tampa," he said.

Police arrested one man during the incident, Aaron Lamar Brown, 25, for violently resisting arrest and violating his probation, according to WFLA-TV.

The Saturday night incident was followed by a separate ambush that occurred Monday morning at a 7-Eleven, when a suspect resisted arrest and attempted to take an officer's gun.

The suspect also reportedly struck the officer in the face several times, leaving him with cuts and bruises.

Dugan made clear that he will not tolerate violence against his officers.

"There have been some violent acts. People are acting out. They think they can get away with doing whatever they want toward the cops," Dugan said. "We're going to use the necessary force to take people into custody. I think that's what people need to understand."

"The police, we always have everyone's back. Nobody has ours right now and that is what I think is missing here," he added. "The cops are not going to lie down. We're going to go out there and do our job, but we're being really careful."

BET Founder Robert Johnson Calls for Independent Black Lives Matter Political Party

Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder Robert Johnson is calling on Black Lives Matter to break away from the Democrat Party to form an independent political party.

Joe Biden’s racist “you ain’t black” comment appears to have been what motivated Johnson to come up with this idea.

During a Tuesday morning appearance on CNBC, the billionaire explained, “I’ve been convinced for a long time that 40 millions African Americans who tend to vote as a bloc in one of the two parties limit their leverage in getting action from both parties.”

Last week, Johnson wrote a letter to Black Lives Matter urging them to do exactly that:

I am writing to you with a suggestion that Black Lives Matter (BLM) consider establishing a formal independent political party. The party could be founded on the principle articulated by the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1971. That formative principle stated, “Black people have no permanent friends, no permanent enemies.…just permanent interests.” The effort to create an independent Black party, created specifically to address Black issues, is not a new idea among Black people. There are many people, both Black and white who believe that independent parties can make a significant contribution to the current political system as to how this nation of 300 million diverse citizens can be governed in the best interest of all Americans. Many pundits will try to convince you that it is impossible for independent parties to exist in this country. They will argue that the American people seem to be satisfied with just two choices. To the contrary, I believe a politically astute and structured Black independent party, committed and engaged in the electoral process, can prove them wrong.

Earlier this month, Johnson argued for $14 trillion — with a “T” — in slavery reparations, which would be pretty difficult in a country that only has $1.5 trillion in cash floating around. Anyway…

On CNBC, Johnson expanded on his Black Lives Matter independent party idea: “I think it’s time African Americans to form an independent party, not be an appendage of one party or ignored by the other party.”

“Had African American interests been fully embraced by one of two of the dominant parties, we wouldn’t have the tremendous social and economic racial issues that we have now,” he continued.

Johnson added that he would like to see Black Lives Matter candidates run at all levels of government, local, state, and national.

Johnson admits it is too late for an independent party to gear up for this year, but believes now is the time to have the discussion. “As you can see, the Democrat Party is terrified of the notion that black folks might either vote a protest vote at the top of the ticket or decide to sit this out.”

As an example of how the Democrat Party takes the black vote for granted, Johnson referred back to Biden’s declaration last month that black people who don’t vote for him “ain’t black.” Johnson said this was a “horrific statement [that] reflects the need for a black independent party. That someone can be so presumptuous that you have to vote for a Democrat or otherwise you are not identified as black.”

“That is the principle reason why we need an independent black party — to change that kind of behavior so that we’re not taken for granted by the Democrats and ignored by the Republicans.”

MEXICO CITY, June 23 (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck the coast of southern Mexico on Tuesday, killing at least one person, buckling paved roads, and sending people fleeing their homes into the streets.

One person died in the state of Oaxaca, Governor Alejandro Murat said, after the quake hit the Pacific coastal state mid-morning.

Suspected UK Terrorist Was Released From Prison Early and Known to MI5

Khairi Saadallah, the Libyan refugee who has been detained on suspicion of perpetrating the knife attack in Reading, was released early from prison, was enrolled in the government’s Prevent deradicalisation scheme, and is believed to have been known to the UK’s security services as a possible terror suspect before the attack.

Saad­allah had been sentenced in October 2019 to 25 months and 20 days in prison for breaching a suspended jail term, racially motivated assault, criminal damage, and affray (public fighting) — yet only served 17 months and 20 days behind bars.

In March, the Court of Appeal decided to cut the prison sentence for the 25-year-old short, releasing him 16 days before the terrorist attack took place this past Saturday, June 20th.

The Libyan refugee was given strict licence conditions upon his release due to his violent past and history of mental illness. However, probation and social service officials reportedly struggled to keep track of him due to the Chinese coronavirus national lockdown.

“He obviously had an interest in extremism dating to last year. He had delusional and probably paranoid schizophrenia and was on strong medication which could be administered regularly in prison. His issues mean any trigger could have been very quick,” a source told The Sun.

The source added his motives for the attack — in which he killed men reported to be part of the Reading LGBT community — “remains unclear” and “His associations in prison are one line of inquiry”.

Khairi Saadallah reportedly first entered the United Kingdom as an illegal migrant in 2012 before being granted asylum in 2018.

According to The Telegraph, he had bragged to his friends that he was a former child soldier in Libya, fighting to overthrow Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

“He would describe himself as a Libyan soldier and said he had escaped because he didn’t want to be in the army,” a friend of Saadallah said.

The 25-year-old is also said to have told friends that he “fought for and against Islamic State” terrorist organisation. His erratic claims were believed by health officials to be linked to a form of mental illness, The Times reported.

Saadallah had been involved in the government’s Prevent programme, which seeks to deradicalise people, mostly of the younger generation, who are at risk of joining extremist groups or committing acts of terror.

He is reported to have met with Prevent officials, and had access to various support services provided through the programme. Officials, however, determined that Saadallah was not a likely terror threat.

WASHINGTON, June 23 (Reuters) - Dozens of Republican former U.S. national security officials are forming a group that will back Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, people familiar with the effort said, in a further sign that President Donald Trump has alienated some members of his own party.

The group will publicly endorse Biden in the coming weeks and its members plan to campaign for the former vice president who is challenging Trump in the Nov. 3 election, the sources said. German Security Agency Warns Far-Left Political Assasinations by Antifa Groups ‘No Longer Unthinkable’

The German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has sounded the alarm over the increased level of violence from far-left Antifa militants, saying murders of political opponents are now possible.

According to the German security agency, far-left extremists have become more radical to the point that “the development of terrorist structures in left-wing extremism” is now a real possibility.

The 22-page report, which was obtained by German newspaper Die Welt, adds that “even the step of deliberately killing a political opponent no longer seems completely unthinkable”.

The agency specifically notes several groups within the far-left scene in various German regions which have become more radicalised and have closed off from many in the broader far-left. BfV said the left-extremists are “committed to their own facts, and split off from the rest of the scene due to their increasing willingness to use violence”.

Radicalisation has been seen in several hotbeds of far-left extremism, according to the agency, including Berlin, Hamburg, and Leipzig.

The Antifa militants in Leipzig especially have become more extreme and violent in recent months. They are believed to be responsible for the sabotage of construction sites linked to building projects they have deemed to be gentrification.

The sabotage has cost companies millions of euros and even led to an incident in which Antifa extremists viciously assaulted a female real estate company employee in her own home in November of last year.

The state of Saxony, where Leipzig is located, has set up a special police division named Soko LinX, specifically to deal with the rise of far-left extremist violence.

Berlin has also seen continued Antifa violence, primarily centred around the “Riga 94” apartment complex which has been occupied illegally by far-left extremists for decades.

Most recently, far-left extremists were thought to be responsible for assaulting a German television crew during May Day protests, sending most of them to the hospital.

MP Andrii Derkach has made public recordings of conversations with "voices similar to Poroshenko and Biden," which discuss Shokin’s resignation in exchange for $1 billion in US loan guarantees, external management of the Ukrainian government and tariff increase by 100% instead of 75%.

Records of conversations that took place at the end of 2015 and during 2016 by former President of Ukraine Poroshenko with former Vice President of the United States Biden and former United States Secretary of State Kerry were made public at today's press conference held by Derkach at Interfax-Ukraine agency. Former prosecutor Konstantin Kulik, who investigated the crimes of the Yanukovych regime, also took part in the event.

According to Derkach, records confirming the facts of international corruption, treason and external governance at the highest state level were handed to him by the investigative journalists. According to them, the recording of conversations was made by Poroshenko personally.

The member of the Parliament stressed that Biden demanded that Poroshenko resign Shokin, blackmailing him with $1 billion in loan guarantees that the United States was to provide to Ukraine.

"$1 billion of US taxpayers' money. That's the price of saving Biden from prison. For the sake of $1 billion, Petro Oleksiyovych dismissed the Prosecutor General Shokin, who investigated the Burisma case and eventually went after Bidens," Derkach said.

Derkach recalled that at the end of 2019, a major international corruption scandal erupted in the United States. Former Vice President of the United States Joe Biden was involved in a massive corruption scheme.

The words of the member of the Parliament were confirmed by the former prosecutor Konstantin Kulik.

The investigation received evidence of the transfer of laundered money by a criminal group in the amount of $3.4 million from the accounts of Burisma Holdings Limited in the period from November 2014 to October 2015 to the account of Rosemont Seneca Bohai LLC with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC United States/Citibank, NY. The purpose of the payment – "for advisory services," but according to the testimony of witnesses, the money was paid to the family of former Vice President of the United States Joe Biden for lobbying the interests of Burisma Holdings Limited and Mykola Zlochevsky," Kulik said.

According to Derkach, the second subject of these conversations clearly proves the manual governance of Ukraine in Biden’s personal interests through the hands of Poroshenko and members of the supervisory boards of state enterprises.

"The Prosecutor General’s Office is managed through Sakvarelidze, who is assigned to the Prosecutor General, and an "observer" from Biden. Biden governs three out of five factions in Parliament. He also fully controls the Cabinet of Ministers. The largest state-owned enterprises – Naftogaz, Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukrposhta, OschadBank, Ukroboronprom, were swarmed all over by the Supervisory Boards, consisting of Soros allies and expatriates. They are paid millions in salaries and bonuses with the Ukrainians' money. The Parliament, the Cabinet of Ministers, the Prosecutor General’s Office, NABU, state-owned enterprises – all this Poroshenko exchanged for the right to absorb $1 billion through his enterprises. That is why we call it the signs of treason. And that is why we call it external governance," Derkach emphasized.

The member of the Parliament also drew attention to the fact that Poroshenko’s confession about raising tariffs for the population by 100% instead of 75% is on the records.

"Petro Oleksiyovych confesses to Biden that he raised tariffs for ordinary Ukrainians, attention, not by 75% as requested by the IMF, but by as much as 100%. For the sake of a billion for himself, Poroshenko is ready to strip the Ukrainians naked and also make money on tariffs. By the way, tariffs really doubled," Derkach said.

Derkach emphasized that all the many-hour records available today, along with a statement on treason and facts of international corruption, were handed over to the Prosecutor General's Office.All the files were sent to US government agencies for use and decision making within their competence

The member of the Parliament separately noted that the speaker Razumkov personally blocks the creation of the Temporary Investigation Commission of the Verkhovna Rada, which Derkach registered with Dubinsky, which is a violation of the direct rule of the Law On Regulations

"If a commission were created, it would be easier for us to investigate the facts of international corruption. If, after this press conference, Razumkov fails to put to the vote the issue of creating the commission, we will sue him. You can't hide corruption, especially when it's a massive corruption scheme involving Poroshenko and Biden. External governance of the country must be stopped," Derkach summed up.

NYPD Rearrests Over 250 Inmates After COVID-Related Mass Jail Release

We’ve been frequently told, as jails across the country release pretty much everyone they can, that COVID-19 is a scourge that’s uniquely problematic in situations like jails, where it can spread like wildfire. This is accurate.

We haven’t been frequently told that jails are often full of people who both deserve and need to be in jails. This bit is important since it’s also accurate.

We’re beginning to find out just how accurate.

In New York City alone, the New York Police Department estimates, roughly one out of every 10 inmates released from Rikers Island jail — the city’s main jail complex — has been rearrested by the city’s police force.

“We’re continuing to see people get arrested over and over and let right back out. And it really defies common sense,” NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea told New York’s WNBC-TV.

Michael LiPetri, head of Crime Control Strategies for the NYPD, said that at least 250 of the roughly 2,500 defendants who were freed from Rikers Island as part of the massive COVID-related jail release have been rearrested by the NYPD.

Nothing is more illustrative of the problem than the case of 27-year-old Jonathan Martinez.

On June 6, Martinez was caught on video stealing socks from drugstore Prime Essentials and putting them on. He also stole medicine, according to WNBC’s report, after throwing a rock through the store’s window.

Co-owner Josh Rahmani said he felt sad when he first saw the video.

“I felt really bad that he got arrested for taking socks, food and medicine,” Rahmani said. “We would have just given it to him if had asked.”

He found out from the station that Martinez had been rearrested at least three times before this and was less thrilled.

“This is shocking and disturbing,” co-owner Ebi Khalili said. “It’s a bad decision by our leaders.”

The NYPD said it wasn’t against letting older prisoners out but was opposed to letting offenders like Martinez go.

An Oxford University professor who has held a prestigious title since 2014, has been jailed in France for downloaded 28,000 child abuse images.

Theology professor Jan Joosten, 61, has been suspended as Regius Professor of Hebrew - a title that was founded by Henry VIII in the 16th century.

A lengthy investigation by police in Strasbourg uncovered a thousands of images downloaded by Joosten, including depictions of child rape.

The father of four accepted the facts of the case and described his addiction as 'a secret garden, in contradiction with myself,' according to The Guardian.

Belgian-born Joosten is held in high regard by biblical scholars and was recently the editor-in-chief of Vetus Testamentum, a journal studying the Old Testament.

He worked at the University of Strasbourg for 20 years before joining the University of Oxford in 2014.

Oxford university and Christ Church, the college he was affiliated with, issued this statement on Monday: 'We can confirm that, following the conviction in France of Professor Jan Joosten for possession of images and videos of child pornography, he has been suspended by the Faculty of Oriental Studies and Christ Church pending further action.

'The university has informed any staff and students who would have had contact with him and has provided them with the contacts of the welfare and support services, in case that any of them require additional support.

'Christ Church is fully committed to safeguarding and has robust policies and processes in place. Our thoughts are with anyone affected by this news. If anyone requires immediate support, they should contact Christ Church or the police.'

The Saudi-led coalition announced on Monday that a ceasefire was agreed to between Yemen’s Saudi-backed government and the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC). The ceasefire was announced after the STC took control of Socotra, an island off Yemen’s coast. Both parties agreed to meet in Riyadh to work on implementing a peace deal that was negotiated in 2019.

The STC has been a thorn in the side of the US-backed Saudi-led coalition that has been fighting to regain control of north Yemen from the Houthis, so they can reinstate exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

The UAE and Saudi Arabia were partners in the coalition when the war started in 2015, but the UAE’s backing of the STC has put a major strain on that relationship. The STC seeks to reestablish South Yemen as a separate country from the north and flies the flag of the former country.

After the STC captured Socotra, Hadi accused Saudi Arabia of betraying Yemen’s government since they did not act to retake the island. The Saudis will likely continue to encourage peace talks since they are having enough of a hard time fighting the Houthis.

Hollywood executive David Guillod is charged with 11 sex crimes, including rape and kidnapping for attacks on four women dating back to 2012

A Hollywood producer and talent manager has been charged with multiple counts of rape, sexual assault and kidnap of four women in California, prosecutors said Monday.

David Guillod, an executive producer on 'Atomic Blonde' and 'Extraction,' is the latest Hollywood mogul to be swept up in the #MeToo movement, which led to Harvey Weinstein's 23-year jail sentence for rape and sexual assault in March.

Guillod surrendered to police Monday morning in Santa Barbara, near Los Angeles, accompanied by his attorney, after a three-year investigation led to him being charged with the rape and sexual assault of four women.

He faces a total of 11 felony charges for the incidents spanning back to 2012, and a maximum sentence of 21 years to life in prison, Santa Barbara prosecutors said.

Guillod, 53, denies all the charges, his lawyer said.

Afghan Govt: Taliban Killed 291 Security Personnel Last Week

Afghan lawyers supervising Taliban prisoner release were killed on Monday, Taliban deny responsibility

Afghanistan’s National Security Council said on Monday that the Taliban carried out 422 attacks in 32 provinces last week, killing 291 Afghan government security personnel. A security council spokesman said last week was the “deadliest of the past 19 years.”

The Taliban denied the figures and said the government was trying to hurt the peace process. “The enemy aims to hurt the peace process and intra-Afghan talks by releasing such false reports,” Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s spokesman, told AFP. Mujahid said the Taliban did launch attacks last week but claimed they were mostly in “self-defense.”

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani condemned the recent uptick in violence on Monday, which he blamed on the Taliban. Ghani said the violence is “running against the spirit of commitment for peace.”

Another attack occurred on Monday when gunmen opened fire on a car belonging to the Afghan attorney general’s office outside Kabul, killing five people inside.

A spokesman for the attorney general’s office said the victims were prosecutors who were members of the team supervising the release of Taliban prisoners under the US deal. It is not yet clear who carried out the ambush, the Taliban denied responsibility.

The Afghan government has released 3,000 Taliban prisoners, and plan on releasing 2,000 more to fulfill their commitment under the US-Taliban deal. The Taliban have said they are ready for intra-Afghan peace talks after the remaining prisoners are released.

Zalmay Khalilzad, the US special envoy for the Afghanistan talks, took to Twitter to condemn the recent attack and called for further negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government. “Both sides should not be deterred, and push forward to take the steps necessary to reach intra-Afghan negotiations,” Khalilzad said.

Utility “Smart” Meters are awful and you probably have them whether you know it or not. Ten of millions of them – electric, gas, and water – have been installed on homes and throughout communities in the U.S. and worldwide.

They are so unpopular (see 1, 2) and problematic and EXPENSIVE (see 1, 2) that many utility companies refer to them by other names to confuse customers. Most (if not all) of the cost for their installation AND replacement have been and continue to be passed onto customers. Proponents – including environmental groups (see 1, 2) – promised they would help customers significantly reduce their energy use and lower their bills. NOPE!!! Because they are 2-way transmitting they actually USE MORE ENERGY to operate than original analog meters which are 1-way transmitting. That additional use is at least sometimes being passed on to customers (see 1, 2). Ridiculously high measurement errors have also been scientifically documented and reported.

From the jump, so many problems and complaints were reported – including fires and explosions (see 1, 2. 3. 4) -that a documentary was produced about these meters in 2013 and then updated in 2017 to include MORE problems and complaints. Nevertheless, an estimated 34.8 million are being shipped out for installation next year. Argh.

Post COVID-19 smart meter shipments to hit 34.8 million units in 2021

According to a new report from the IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, annual shipments of smart energy meters in Europe will reach a record level of 34.8 million units in 2021.

Temporarily postponed meter installations due to COVID-19 are expected to have a slightly negative impact on shipment levels in 2020 and the total number of smart meters installed during the year is anticipated to be 10 percent lower compared to the previous year. Annual smart electricity meter shipments amounted to 20.9 million units in 2019 and the corresponding figure for smart gas meters was 8.5 million units.

Major first-wave rollouts in countries such as France and the Netherlands are expected to be completed according to timelines in the next couple of years while the largely delayed UK rollout is forecasted to ramp up during the same time period. Meanwhile, Italy is now in the late stages of its deployment of smart gas meters as well as in the in the midst of its second-wave rollout of smart electricity meters, contributing with significant volumes in the next few years. With large-scale second-wave rollouts also beginning in Sweden and Finland during 2020–2021, upgrades of first-generation smart electricity metering systems are forecasted to account for 30–35 percent of annual European smart electricity meter shipments during 2020–2024.

Britain's coronavirus outbreak is continuing to shrink as two separate batches of data released today suggested only 3,300 to 3,800 people are getting infected each day in England.

Estimates from the King's College London's COVID Symptom Tracker app say the number of people being struck down each day has plunged by a quarter in just a week to 3,391 each day. The researchers — who projected the figure was as high as 11,000 just a month ago — have been collecting reports of symptoms and test results from a million UK citizens since the pandemic began.

And government data from the Office for National Statistics has predicted that around 3,800 people are catching the virus each day across the nation — some 26,900 per week. The estimate is based on testing in a representative sample of almost 25,000 people across England, only 10 of whom swabbed positive.

Neither estimate provides projections for Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland — but both represent a drop from same set of statistics released last week and show the virus is continuing to fade away in Britain, after terrorizing the nation for months.

The two similar estimates are around five times lower than the projection of Public Health England and Cambridge University experts, who a fortnight ago estimated nearly 17,000 cases a day were occurring across the country.

Department of Health statistics today revealed 1,218 more Brits have been diagnosed with coronavirus — but these figures never show the true scale of the outbreak because many people who catch the virus never swab positive because they don't realise they are sick, couldn't get a test, or the result was wrong.

The number of people who have been diagnosed in total during the UK's epidemic is still unknown. Blood testing data published today by the ONS suggested that only 5.4 per cent of England have had the disease — 3.14million people.

However, this figure was lower than the 6.5 per cent it found in its last estimate because it tested different blood samples (total 1,757) which happened to have a smaller proportion of people who had already been infected, the ONS said.

Having Sucked America Dry, Tech Giants Seek New Markets Beyond Reach of US Antitrust Laws

An aggressive push to consolidate companies in the tech sector, coupled with the world’s ever-increasing dependence on digital platforms and tools, is quickly leading to a crisis of sovereignty.

The American consumer market for big tech gadgets appears to have reached the point of saturation as the novelty of mobile devices and laptops plateau and the persistent lockdown sees savings dwindle and discretionary spending disappear. Apple, which has enjoyed reigning over the smartphone market for more than a decade, has been forced to drop its prices over the last year as a result of a market at full capacity.

Nevertheless, one of the world’s most liquid companies, along with other tech giants like Facebook and Google – whose parent company, Alphabet, Inc. recently overtook Apple as the most cash-rich company in the world – are taking full advantage of their position to gobble up startups in emerging sectors in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) space like Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL), in order to solidify their place in other, mostly untapped markets in developing nations.

Big tech’s insatiable appetite, as manifested in this current sprint to further consolidate their assets, is bound to give them even more control over their already substantial access to our data and other digital activities of the population at large. Earlier this year, then Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren led the call to “Break Them Up,” in reference to the big tech companies, declaring that they had “bulldozed competition, used our private information for profit, and tilted the playing field against everyone else. And in the process, they have hurt small businesses and stifled innovation.” Her plan to “level the playing field,” however, seems to have gone away with her fleeting candidacy.

Nonetheless, they are all gearing up to face an election-year challenge to their growing power as a year-long House Judiciary subcommittee investigation is set to conclude and will more than likely provide plenty of fodder for the antitrust battles looming on the horizon. Some analysts have speculated that the U.S. government could impose fines on companies like Google in the tens of billions for past violations. But, whether or not this Congress implements measures with any real teeth remains to be seen.

"Catastrophic Financial Challenges" - 42 Hospitals Closed, Filed For Bankruptcy Due To COVID Pressures

The American Hospital Association (AHA) warns, in a new report, that "hospitals and health systems face catastrophic financial challenges in light of the COVID-19 pandemic."

From soaring COVID-19 costs to canceled services to plunging hospital revenue to purchasing personal protective equipment to reimbursement landscape challenges to decreasing patient volumes, many of these factors have triggered a recent bankruptcy wave and or closures of hospitals across the country.

AHA said the virus pandemic has created a cash crunch for many hospitals. These medical facilities are expected to lose upwards of $200 billion between March 1 and June 30, or about an average of $50.7 billion per month. U.S. nonfederal hospitals are expected to lose approximately $161.4 billion in revenue over the four months, due to canceled services (including nonelective surgeries and outpatient treatment).

To better understand the financial challenges for many hospitals, AHA lists the top financial burdens:

the effect of COVID-19 hospitalizations on hospital costs;

the effect of canceled and forgone services, caused by COVID-19, on hospital revenue;

the additional costs associated with purchasing needed personal protective equipment; and

the costs of the additional support some hospitals are providing to their workers.

AHA said that even though the federal government provided financial assistance to hospitals during the virus outbreak - many facilities had existing financial pressures before 2020.

"Although the federal government moved quickly to provide relief, more help is needed. Critics have argued that hospitals were well funded prior to the COVID-19 public health emergency, however, the reality is that many hospitals were already facing financial pressures. Experts have raised concerns about low payment rates from government payers, which in part led the Congressional Budget Office to project that between 40% and 50% of hospitals could have negative margins by 2025 prior to the pandemic. Congress created a provider relief fund to support health care providers during the pandemic, but this fund is intended to stabilize providers in order to keep their doors open, rather than fully restore compensation to pre-COVID-19 levels. Further, these funds are being distributed to all health care providers with only a portion of these funds going directly to hospitals. Other providers – such as physicians and other clinicians, laboratory and testing facilities, and durable medical equipment providers – are drawing down from health care provider relief funds as well. Hospitals and health systems will need more funds to treat patients, save lives, and get America back on its feet."

Trump Immigration Crackdown: Tech Giants Like Google, Apple, Amazon, Others Slam Executive Order Limiting Visas

President Trump’s expansion of immigration limits has now drawn condemnation from major technology giants, including Google, Tesla, Amazon, Apple and more. The companies have taken issue with the suspension of the L-1 visa, which allows for the transfer of overseas staff, and the H-1B visa, which allows for the hiring of skilled foreign workers in a number of fields.

Trump signed the executive order Monday with the limitations beginning on June 24 and lasting until at least the end of 2020. The Migration Policy Institute estimates that the order will impact around 219,000 immigrant workers.

The response from tech executives was swift.

“Immigration has contributed immensely to America’s economic success, making it a global leader in tech, and also Google the company it is today,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said on Twitter. “Disappointed by today’s proclamation — we’ll continue to stand with immigrants and work to expand opportunity for all.”

“Like Apple, this nation of immigrants has always found strength in our diversity, and hope in the enduring promise of the American Dream,” Apple’s Tim Cook said in a tweet. “There is no new prosperity without both. Deeply disappointed by this proclamation.”

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, who is of Polish and Russian-Jewish descent, also highlighted her own family’s history as immigrants.

“Immigration is central to America's story, and it's central to my own family's story,” Wojcicki said in a tweet. “My family escaped danger and found a new home in America.”

North Korea’s Anti-South Korea Campaign

On June 16, North Korea demolished the inter-Korean liaison office in the Kaesong Industrial Complex (KIC) with a dramatic explosion. The North’s move came just one week after severing all inter-Korean communication lines, and three days after Kim Yo Jong warned of “the useless north-south joint liaison office completely collap[sing].”[1] The liaison office, opened in September 2018, was a product of the Panmunjom Declaration adopted at the first Kim-Moon summit. Pyongyang’s physical destruction of this symbolic site was apparently an attempt to make a clean break with the Moon administration.

The demolition was followed by the Korean People’s Army’s (KPA) four-point action plan: redeploying troops to Mt. Kumgang and the KIC; reopening the guard posts along the border; beefing up forces along the border, including the maritime border; and supporting the North Korean people’s scattering of leaflets. If the plan is approved by the party’s Central Military Commission (CMC) and is implemented, it would be a further blow to inter-Korean reconciliation and the Panmunjom Declaration.[2] North Korea’s redeployment of troops to Mt. Kumgang and the KIC would be the first such occurrence since they were transformed into sites of inter-Korean economic cooperation approximately 20 years ago.[3]

Additionally, North Korea has reinstalled approximately 20 loudspeakers as of June 23, according to South Korean military sources. While this was not specifically part of the KPA’s announced four-point plan, the Panmunjom Declaration specifically prohibits the scattering of leaflets and use of loudspeakers along the Military Demarcation Line (MDL). The two Koreas removed their loudspeakers along the border in May 2018 as a follow-up to the first summit between Kim and Moon.

It is unclear how far the North will go to signal its break with South Korea, having left just enough room to de-escalate if and when it sees fit. The rhetoric has already taken a milder tone since the demolition of the liaison office, as it focuses instead on the nuisance of leaflet campaigns. Furthermore, its current propaganda campaign is unlikely to stop with just anti-South Korean actions. Recent North Korean Foreign Ministry statements about the status of US-DPRK relations provide an ominous sign that an anti-US campaign looms likely in the not-so-distant future.[4]

OAKLAND — FBI agents arrested Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huizar on Tuesday on a federal racketeering charge stemming from his alleged involvement in a sprawling pay-to-play corruption scheme.

Prosecutors believe Huizar and his associates solicited bribes and other financial perks like trips to Las Vegas from people with business before City Hall and, in return, helped those benefactors advance real estate projects. Among the benefits Huizar is alleged to have accepted is some $600,000 worth of collateral to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit.

“This case pulled back the curtain on rampant corruption at City Hall,” United States Attorney Nick Hanna said in a statement. “Councilman Huizar violated the public trust to a staggering degree, allegedly soliciting and accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from multiple sources over many years.”

An attorney for Huizar did not respond to a request for comment.

A sworn FBI affidavit places Huizar at the center of a years-long, pay-to-play scheme in which financial benefits and political favors flowed back and forth between Huizar’s orbit and real estate developers, primarily Chinese individuals, with projects in Los Angeles. Prosecutors dubbed the scheme Operation Casino Royale.

Prosecutors believe that Huizar and his associates received cash, including contributions to his re-election campaign, and a glittering menu of luxury hotel stays, sumptuous meals and tickets to events, which they sought to conceal from the government — including by making false statements on a loan application and stashing $129,000 at Huizar’s residence, which FBI agents found hidden in a closet during a search.

In return, Huizar allegedly filed motions or voted to advance his benefactors’ projects while pressuring other city officials, labor unions and developers to aid the real estate developments. The events unfolded as Huizar’s district was experiencing a “historical real estate boom,” the affidavit alleges, and Huizar was positioned to enrich himself because he headed the city’s planning and land use committee. A prominent Chinese billionaire real estate developer who wanted to build the tallest building west of the Mississippi allegedly provided some $800,000 worth of financial benefits to Huizar.

“Mr Huizar was able to provide preferential treatment to those who paid because most of the development in recent years was centered in his district,” Hanna said in a press conference. “He decided which projects lived and which projects died.”

The affidavit details Huizar seeking campaign contribution pledges from developers with pending business before the committee. He allegedly presented resolutions praising business executives who had contributed money, and sought to communicate that developers who did not comply could see their projects undermined.

The federal case also alleges that Huizar used the scheme to try and elect a relative to succeed him on the City Council as Huizar eyed citywide office, which the affidavit depicts as an effort to perpetuate the scheme in a way that kept Huizar in power and maintained the flow of money. Huizar and his associates allegedly set up a political action committee to boost the relative and then sought donations.

The federal investigation had already ensnared four other people. They included former Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch Englander, as well as a former Huizar staffer, George Esparza, who this year was serving as chief of staff to Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D-Boyle Heights) but no longer works for the Assembly.

Englander has agreed to plead guilty to obstructing a federal investigation. Esparza pleaded guilty earlier this year, admitting to a running scheme to trade favors from people with business before City Hall for political support.

The investigation targeting Huizar and his associates has long cast a shadow over Los Angeles City Hall. City Council President Nury Martinez said the arrest was “not unexpected,” likening the probe to “a dark cloud over our City government” and she said she would remove him from office.

“That is our duty and we must do it,” Martinez said in a statement.

Bayer Pays $10BN To Settle Thousands Of Monsanto Glyphosate Lawsuits

After decades of widespread use as company scientists played down research showing a definitive link between the product and growing rates of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, Monsanto parent company Bayer has agreed to pay up to $10 billion to settle claims that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, causes cancer.

Citing people familiar with the matter, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported that the company has agreed to settle tens of thousands of glyphosate-related lawsuits in the US for between $8 billion to $10 billion.

Of that number, $2 billion is considered a "reserve" which can be used to settle future claims.

The rest will be used to settle all of the lawsuits pending in the United States from users of the controversial weed killer, the number of active lawsuits against the Roundup purveyor recently numbered more than 50k.

Talks for an out of court settlement have been ongoing since last summer.

Last year, scientists evaluated a batch of existing studies and determined that Monsanto's ubiquitous weed-killer Roundup and its active ingredient glyphosate increased cancer risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) by 41%, according to a research published in February 2019. Back in 2018, a San Francisco Jury awarded $289 million in damages to a former school groundskeeper, Dewayne Johnson, who said Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller gave him terminal cancer. That award consisted of $40 million in compensatory damages and $250 million in punitive damages

Bayer inherited the glyphosate problems during its $60 billion acquisition of Monsanto. After losing three lawsuits and getting stuck with high damages judgments pertaining to risks with the weed killer, Bayer changed its strategy and abandoned its aggressive defense in favor of trying to negotiate a sweeping settlement of the tens of thousands of US lawsuits pending. Analysts had feared the settlement could cost as much as €20 billion, which is roughly double the final amount, which should be a positive for the company's shares.

So far, science has not been able to conclusively clarify whether glyphosate is carcinogenic or not. Bayer holds numerous studies against the classification of the IARC and other researchers. The US environmental agency EPA supports the group and, despite the heated debate about glyphosate, has so far maintained that the controversial pesticide poses no health risk to people if used properly.

Adult Film Star Ron Jeremy Charged With 3 Counts of Rape, 1 Count Of Sexual Assault

Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey announced today that Ron Jeremy has been charged with forcibly raping three women and sexually assaulting another in separate incidents dating back to 2014.

Ronald Jeremy Hyatt was charged with three counts each of “forcible rape and forcible penetration by a foreign object and one count each of forcible oral copulation and sexual battery.”

Deputy District Attorney Paul Thompson of the Sex Crimes Division is prosecuting the case.

In May 2014, Jeremy is accused of forcibly raping a 25-year-old woman at a home in West Hollywood.

Jeremy allegedly sexually assaulted two women, ages 33 and 46, on separate occasions at a West Hollywood bar in 2017.

He also is accused of forcibly raping a 30-year-old woman at the same bar in July 2019.

The District Attorney’s Office also declined a case against Hyatt due to insufficient evidence stemming from an incident in 2016.

Prosecutors are recommending bail at $6.6 million. If convicted as charged, Jeremy faces a possible maximum sentence of 90 years to life in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The movement was supported by the Chinese media

Mass demonstrations and looting by the students ensued.

Statues were torn down.

Chinese architecture was destroyed.

Classical literature and Chinese paintings were torn apart and burned.

Temples were desecrated.

The Cemetery of Confucius was attacked

The corpse of the 76th-generation Duke Yansheng was removed from its grave and hung naked from a tree

Wealthy homes were attacked and destroyed.

Many families' long-kept genealogy books were burned to ashes.

Public leaders who were considered to be oppressive were tried by angry mobs and vigilantes

Three days later, August 22, 1966, a central directive was issued to stop police intervention. The police were disbanded in the city and the students formed a community solution called the RED GUARD. The RED GUARDS policed the communities and punished anyone who did not agree with their ideas. Even people that supported the movement, but had bad thoughts could be punished.

Though many Christians supported the movement in the beginning, they quickly became the number one target of the RED GUARDS and public trials were held to condemn them to death.

Many of those that were on board with the cause of the rebellion in the beginning saw that it was not really what they had signed up for, but by then it was too late. The power that the Red Guard wanted had already been given.

More people died during the cultural revolution in China than any war, famine, or natural disaster in the history of man.

Russia Calls For Immediate Ceasefire in Libya, Denounces Reports About ‘Russian Mercenaries’ As Based On False Data

On June 23, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for an immediate ceasefire in Libya, adding that Turkey and Egypt are also not interestsed in an forceful scenario of the conflict development.

Lavrov added that all external forces should create conditions for inclusive dialogue between the warring factions in Libya, something that Turkey and Egypt also agreed with, after Lavrov held talks by phone with the foreign ministers of those countries.

In a separate development, the head of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, Pyotr Ilyichev commented on reports about the presence of ‘Russian mercenaries’ in Libya. According to him, most of these reports are based on false or misleading data.

“A lot of information, especially concerning the Russian citizens mentioned in the report, is simply unfounded. People who allegedly were fighting in Libya did not actually leave our country. So-called “wounded” are quite healthy. This is all available in the public space and is again verifiable,” Ilyichev said commeting on the recent report about the supposed involvement of ‘Russian mercenaries’ in the conflict

Official comments of the Russian side go contrary to what the US military claims. According to it, the presence of Russin private military contractors is a destabilizing factor in Libya. The US insists that these contractors fight on the side of the Libyan National Army. At the same time, Washington and Ankara in fact support the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord, which is infamous for cooperation with various al-Qaeda-linked formations.

It should be noted that despite remarks by the Russian Foreign Ministry, the presence of Russian prviate military contractors in Libya is an open secret. However, these forces mostly represent interests of various Russian business groups rather than the Russian state. The scale of this presence is also exaggerated by Western diplomats and media for propaganda purposes.

Seattle Protesters Will Resume Meetings With City Officials in Coming Days, Organiser Says

Anti-racism protesters in Seattle will resume meetings in the coming days after cancelling one due to difficulty getting black representation, movement organiser David Lewis said on Tuesday.

On Monday, Mayor of Seattle Jenny Durkan announced that the city intends to reclaim the neighbourhood taken over by thousands of anti-racism protesters after two shooting incidents in the area over the weekend and multiple complaints from local residents and businesses.

"We had to cancel one of them [meetings] simply because getting proper representation from the specifically black community in Seattle has proven to be difficult because there is a lot of representation there", he said, adding that the protesters plan to reinstate these meeting in the upcoming days.

Seattle police have been unable to respond to the calls from the so-called "Capitol Hill Organised Protest", or "CHOP". established by protesters in the vicinity of Capitol Hill about two weeks ago, after police retreated from the East Precinct in the area.

The "CHOP" has been patrolled by private armed individuals. Local activists have said that the CHOP does not come under the authority of law enforcement officers.

"I want to be able to know that I am safe in my own community and I want my children and my children's children to know that they are safe in this community and that and until then, I don't think that we'll be able to stop", Lewis said.

Asked about protesters' training on dealing with police, Lewis said, "If any resistance to an officer results in the death of a human, the only defence that we have is numbers and cameras and vigilance. We've always been telling all of our protesters that to stay safe peace first, be defensive".

Police said that on Saturday night, when a 17-year old was shot dead and a 33-year old was critically wounded, law-enforcement officers were met with a hostile crowd that prevented them from getting to the victims.

Mayor Durkan has been heavily criticised for her handling of the situation, especially by President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly called on the local authorities to take back the city.

Dramatic Increase In Violence In Afghanistan Ahead Of Planned Intra-Afghan Peace Talks

According to data released by security officials in Afghanistan, more Afghan soldiers were killed and injured in the past week than during any other week in the past two decades of the conflict. The dramatic increase in casualties has occurred notwithstanding ongoing efforts to make progress in peace talks.

Although violence dropped across much of Afghanistan following the Taliban’s announcement of a three-day ceasefire on 24 May to respect the Muslim Eid al-Fitr celebration, officials have accused the group of stepping up attacks over the last couple of weeks in the lead up to peace talks due to take place in Doha, Qatar.

In a statement on Monday 22 June the National Security Council said that the past week was the deadliest in the 19 years of war, with 291 members of Afghanistan’s armed forces killed in Taliban attacks in 32 provinces.

According to the statement, Taliban militants carried out 422 separate attacks in the last week. In addition to the 291 security and defence force personnel who were killed, another 550 were injured in militant attacks, and at least 148 civilians were killed and wounded.

According to NSC Spokesman Javid Faisal, 42 civilians, including women and children, were killed and 105 others were wounded in the violence Taliban committed across 18 provinces.

The NSC statement accused the Taliban of increasing its armed attacks in violation of a promise to reduce violence and work towards peace, and despite the commitment and goodwill of Afghan government to establish conditions favourable to ongoing negotiations.

The NSC added that the ongoing violence is unacceptable for the government of Afghanistan and once again insisted on the Taliban taking meaningful steps to demonstrate their willpower to achieve peace. It added that peace will be prevented by continual delays and challenges if there is no reduction of violence.

Attorney Paul Kamenar filed an ethics complaint on Tuesday with the Department of Justice against Mueller attorney Aaron Zelinsky.

Andrew Miller and the National Legal and Policy Center, through their undersigned counsel, filed this complaint against Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) Aaron S.J. Zelinsky with the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) for misconduct that occurred during the grand jury proceedings of Mr. Miller regarding the investigation and prosecution of Roger J. Stone.

The complaint was filed with the Department of Justice on Tuesday.

Aaron Zelinsky is slated to speak before Congress and before Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler on Wednesday.

On February 11th all four DOJ prosecutors in the Roger Stone case abruptly resigned after the Department of Justice backed down from their outrageous and excessive sentencing recommendations for Roger Stone after he was caught lying to Congress in a process crime.

Air Force Disputes Pentagon Report, Says No COVID-19 Cases in Space Force

The Pentagon announced Monday that the newly launched Space Force had its first handful of COVID-19 cases. But the Air Force is now disputing that report, saying the number remains zero.

In the latest Pentagon data, which is published three times a week, officials said Monday that six Space Force members had tested positive for the virus.

However, the Department of the Air Force, which oversees the newest military branch, said that is not accurate.

"At this time, none of the 88 uniformed members of the Space Force have tested positive for the coronavirus," an Air Force official told Military.com on Tuesday.

"We are working to clarify how COVID positive numbers for Department of the Air Force members at bases and units assigned to the United States Space Force will be reported to the Joint Staff," the official said.

It was not immediately clear how the miscommunication occurred. The Office of the Secretary of Defense referred all questions to the Air Force.

The Space Force currently has only 88 members. They include Gen. John "Jay" Raymond, the chief of space operations and head of U.S. Space Command; Chief Master Sgt. Roger Towberman, the senior enlisted adviser of the Space Force and command senior enlisted leader of Space Command; and 86 new lieutenants who graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in April.

The sixth military service, which was signed into existence by President Donald Trump on Dec. 20, 2019, is currently operating with the aid of 16,000 airmen detailed temporarily from what was formerly known as Air Force Space Command.

Officials have said that about 6,000 of those temporary personnel will be offered the opportunity to formally transfer into the Space Force by year's end.

Earlier this month, the service said that more than 8,500 active-duty airmen had volunteered to transfer into the branch.

Per the latest official tally, COVID cases continue to rise in the military.

The Pentagon on Monday said there were 655 new reported cases across all its service branches, to include the National Guard Bureau, since Friday.

The Navy continues to lead with 3,010 total cases. Meanwhile, the Army reported the most new COVID-positive members 261 in a four-day span, for a total of 2,803 cases.

Mueller prosecutor: DOJ sentencing instructions for Roger Stone based on 'political considerations'

The Justice Department’s sentencing instructions for Roger Stone “were based on political considerations," according to a member of special counsel Robert Mueller's team who led the successful prosecution of the longtime Trump associate. Aaron Zelinsky, who was a special assistant U.S. attorney in Washington, withdrew from the case in February, along with three other prosecutors following the Justice Department’s decision to walk back its sentencing reco mmendation of seven to nine years in prison. Zelinsky, who now works for the U.S. attorney’s office in Maryland, will testify before the Democratic-led House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. “At the time of the events in question ⁠— February 2020, I was a career Assistant United States Attorney. I was not privy to discussions with political leadership at the Department of Justice. My understanding of what happened in United States v. Stone is based on two things,” Zelinsky’s prepared opening statement reads. “The first is what I saw with my own eyes: the unusual and unprecedented way that Roger Stone’s sentencing was handled by the Department of Justice. The second is what was told to me at the time by my supervisors in the U.S. Attorney’s Office: why the Department was treating Roger Stone differently from everyone else.”

Zelinsky will testify that he saw the Justice Department “exerting significant pressure on the line prosecutors in the case to obscure the correct Sentencing Guidelines calculation to which Roger Stone was subject ⁠— and to water down and in some cases outright distort the events that transpired in his trial and the criminal conduct that gave rise to his conviction.” The DOJ official will also state that what he “repeatedly” heard was that Stone “was being treated differently from any other defendant because of his relationship to the President.” Zelinsky will say that the now-former acting U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, Timothy Shea, was “receiving heavy pressure from the highest levels of the Department of Justice to cut Stone a break, and that the U.S. Attorney’s sentencing instructions to us were based on political considerations.”

Zelinsky will say he was told Shea was giving Stone “such unprecedentedly favorable treatment” because the U.S. attorney was “afraid of the President.” Zelinsky will say he and his fellow line attorneys “immediately and repeatedly raised concerns, in writing and orally, that such political favoritism was wrong and contrary to legal ethics and Department policy.” The Justice Department has denied such politicization existed. Attorney General William Barr publicly griped about Trump's commentary on the case after the president congratulated his top law enforcement official for "taking charge" of a case the president described as being out of control. “I have a problem with some of the tweets,” the attorney general said, noting that Trump's posts about DOJ business made it "impossible" to do his job. “The Stone case was prosecuted while I was attorney general — and I supported it,” Barr said. “I thought that was a righteous prosecution. And I was happy that he was convicted.” “I think it’s time to stop the tweeting about Department of Justice criminal cases,” Barr said. “I’m not going to be bullied or influenced by anybody ... whether it’s Congress, a newspaper editorial board, or the president.”

In February, after the Justice Department recommended a prison sentence of up to nine years for Stone, Trump tweeted that he “cannot allow this miscarriage of justice!” The Justice Department then reversed itself, and the four line prosecutors withdrew. The department said its decision to reverse course was made before Barr was aware of Trump’s position, and the president denied placing any pressure on the agency. The Justice Department walked back the “unduly high” sentence recommendation, suggesting three to four years instead but ultimately leaving it up to the judge.

A Toronto newspaper has revealed that Canada’s leading Russia hater, Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, had a deal with George Soros (lead image) to write his biography after she had lost her journalist jobs at the Financial Times and Reuters, and before she started her run for election to the Canadian parliament.

On August 16 the Toronto Globe and Mail reported Soros is a “close friend” of Freeland, and that with her he has “very great hopes for Canada”. Before she decided to run for parliament, the newspaper says Freeland had a “deal” for “a sort of authorized biography of George Soros”. Soros’s spokesman in New York, Laura Silber, refused to answer repeated questions last week for clarification of the terms of this deal or the compensation Soros agreed with Freeland.

Freeland’s first filing to the Canadian parliament’s ethics watchdog was registered on May 1, 2014. There is no mention of Soros, but there is “income received under a book collaboration agreement with an individual”. Freeland refused last week to identify that individual by name.

Election Officials Dismiss Foreign Counterfeit Mail-in Ballots Claims

Elections officials told The Washington Post that Attorney General William Barr’s concern that a foreign country could send fake mail-in ballots to U.S. voters is nearly an impossible situation.

Barr brought up the scenario in an interview with the New York Times Magazine published Monday.

“We’ve been talking about how, in terms of foreign influence, there are a number of foreign countries that could easily make counterfeit ballots, put names on them, send them in,” Barr said. “And it’d be very hard to sort out what’s happening.”

But election officials say that it would be very difficult for another country to create and then mail people fake ballots completely undetected.

The elections chief in Colorado Judd Choate told the newspaper that “there is zero chance” counterfeit ballots could wind up in voter’s mailboxes because of security precautions already in place. Nearly all voters in Colorado vote by mail.

He said ballot envelopes have tally marks on them that are unique to each voter. Voter signatures are then matched to what is on file. A forger would have to match all of the ballot marks and create identical ballots and envelopes as well as forge signatures.

“It’s preposterous to the point of humor,” Choate said of Barr’s claim fake mail-in ballots from another country were possible.

Demand for mail-in ballots are expected to increase with the threat of coronavirus still looming. President Donald Trump is opposed to voting by mail and has claimed it will result in a flawed election.

“There isn’t an election office in this country that doesn’t know how many ballots they’ve mailed out, how many they’ve gotten back in, and who they were sent to,” Tammy Patrick, a former election official with Maricopa County, Ariz., told The Washington Post. “It is absolutely not the case that someone could create a multitude of ballots and in some way infuse them or inject them into the system without detection.”

States that send mail-in ballots use all types of security measures to make sure ballots are valid. Ballots that are not in the right envelope, size or paper are rejected. Election officials said they would notice if they received multiple ballots from one voter.

“While it’s difficult to comment on a hypothetical situation and we can only speak for North Carolina, it’s almost inconceivable that a county board of elections wouldn’t immediately detect ‘counterfeit ballots’ arriving at their offices,” spokesman for the North Carolina State Board of Elections Patrick Gannon said.

Michael Flynn lawyers receive Peter Strzok notes from US attorney

A court filing Tuesday said U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Jensen of Missouri, who was picked by Attorney General William Barr to review the government's case against Flynn, "obtained and analyzed" the document. "While the page itself is undated; we believe that the notes were taken in early January 2017, possibly between January 3 and January 5," acting U.S. Attorney Michael Sherwin for the District of Columbia wrote to Flynn's team. "These materials are covered by the Protective Order entered by the Court on February 21, 2018; additional documents may be forthcoming." The one-page letter was submitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia as part of the discovery process.

Susan Rice, the national security adviser under President Barack Obama, wrote an email to herself detailing a Jan. 5, 2017, Oval Office discussion about the Flynn inquiry, which was part of the FBI's counterintelligence investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Flynn, who was President Trump's first national security adviser, pleaded guilty in December 2017 to lying to FBI investigators about his December 2016 conversations with a Russian envoy about a United Nations resolution on Israel and sanctions. But Flynn now claims he was set up by the FBI, and the Justice Department is seeking to drop the case. Judge Emmet Sullivan, a President Bill Clinton appointee who has been handling the Flynn case since December 2017, has so far resisted dismissing the case right away.

Strzok took part in the Russia and Hillary Clinton email investigations. Documents declassified in April indicate Strzok abruptly stopped the FBI from closing its investigation into Flynn in early January 2017 at the insistence of the FBI’s “7th floor” leadership after the bureau had uncovered “no derogatory information” on the incoming national security adviser. Emails from later that month showed Strzok, along with FBI lawyer Lisa Page and several others, sought out ways to continue investigating Flynn, including by deploying the Logan Act. Strzok also authored the “opening electronic communication" that initiated the FBI's counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign. After DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz uncovered anti-Trump text messages between Strzok and Page, Republicans accused them of being part of a plot to undermine Trump.

The FBI intercepted Flynn's discussions with the Russian ambassador, after which Strzok and another agent, believed to be Joseph Pientka, grilled him on the contents of the conversation on Jan. 24, 2017. Former FBI Director James Comey admitted last year he took advantage of the chaos in the early days of Trump's administration when he sent Strzok and Pientka to talk to Flynn. Notes from the FBI's head of counterintelligence, Bill Priestap, seem to show him casting doubt on the plan to interview Flynn, asking: “What is our goal? Truth/Admission or to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired?” Strzok was fired in August 2018 and a year later filed a wrongful termination lawsuit. In the face of repeated insults by Trump, Strzok warned in February that he will "have a great deal more to say about the president’s attacks on those with responsibility for holding him accountable." Former Rep. Trey Gowdy recently told Fox News that Strzok may very likely be a target of U.S. Attorney John Durham's inquiry into the Russia investigation after Barr said "some" of the people his hand-picked federal prosecutor is scrutinizing would be familiar to the public. There is a two-tier battle ongoing in the Flynn case.

At the district court level, Sullivan appointed a retired New York federal judge, John Gleeson, in May to serve as an amicus curiae to present arguments in opposition to the Justice Department’s motion to drop the false statement charges against Flynn, even asking Gleeson to look into possible perjury or contempt charges against the former Trump national security adviser.

Syrian Air Defences Reportedly Intercept Israeli Attack on Airspace Near Town of Sweida

On Monday, Syrian state media reported that the country's air defences thwarted drones in the airspace of Jableh.

Syrian air defences have intercepted an Israeli attack on its airspace near the town of Sweida, the country's state TV said.

Reports about Syrian air defences being activated were shared online.

According to the SANA news agency, Syrian air defenсe systems are repelling air attacks in the provinces of As-Suwayda and Deir ez-Zor. The source of the attack and the type of targets were not reported.

At 21:17 pm local time (18:17 GMT), unidentified aircraft fired several missiles from east and northeast of Palmyra at military sites in Kababj, west of Deir Ezzor and in the Al Sukhnah area, SANA reported, citing a military source. Another military location has come under fire south of As-Suwayda, with two Syrian soldiers killed and four more injured. The missile attack has resulted in some material damage on the ground.

And Elaine McCusker, the Pentagon's acting comptroller who questioned the Trump administration for its withholding of aid to Ukraine last year, day earlier had submitted her resignation after the White House in early March pulled her nomination for the official comptroller role.

The United States of America is starting to resemble a Target in Minneapolis, overrun by lawless mobs and left for dead by the very leaders charged with upholding the rule of law.

Today, we are witnessing the wealthiest, freest, and greatest country in the history of the world, which took more than 240 years to build, being burned to the ground at the hands of radical leftists motivated primarily by anarchy and a Marxist agenda, not racial justice. Compared to previous generations and their peers who sign up to defend America, these folks have contributed precious little to society. Yet, somehow, they have found a way to bend America to their will. How? Because most of our nation’s political class won’t stand up and lead.

Yes, those civilians choosing to loot businesses, paint “Kill Cops” on billboards, destroy property, and promote violence are being propped up by the very politicians—Democrat or Republican, take your pick—you’ve elected. But it goes deeper than that.

The very people you have sent to Washington, D.C. to make laws, uphold them, conduct oversight, and ensure America remains a safe and prosperous nation have cowered to the mob.

Politicians have allowed the community of CHAZ in Seattle, run by a self-proclaimed “warlord,” and BHAZ in downtown Washington (feet from the White House) to take over chunks of sovereign cities. They have sat idly as historical statues and federal monuments have been defaced, torn down, and destroyed. They have allowed the mobs to “cancel” anyone with opinions contrary to their radical agenda.

We all know the debauchery playing out before our eyes is part of Democrats’ ultimate agenda to remake America in their image. They have not hidden it, after all.

What is shocking to see, though, as a life-long conservative and now Republican member of Congress, is my party, whether at the local, state, or federal level, so far failing to give their voters reason to believe the GOP will defend our country. More, they have been failng to go on offense to make clear the systemic racism that is ripping apart black families and the fabric of our nation comes from the Democrat Party and its adherence to failed big government programs over the promise of individuals, families, and communities prospering.

During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress established different oaths for the enlisted men of the Continental Army. The first oath, voted on 14 June 1775, was part of the act creating the Continental Army. It read:
