Youmu got a cameo appearance in the final chapter of Wild and Horned Hermit.

Azuma Aya noted that she'll continue to work as a mangaka, but it remains to be seen, if her future manga will still involve Touhou or something original like Harukawa Moe.

This thread is now really outdated but here's a short recap of the past few months.

Collaborations:

>Touhou Cannonball was released back in October and features Youmu

Figurines:

Youmu has appeared in all five chapters of Lotus Eaters so far

She was formally introduced in the fourth chapter. At this point, it's not unlikely that she actually has a supporting role in this story.

Youmu will also appear in Cheating Detective Satori beginning with the next chapter

The Hakugyokurou arc is titled "You'll catch a cold, Yuyuko-sama", which is also kind of Youmu's first line of text in the manga.

The Demo Is Out Now

Players can choose one out of three companion animal spirits and depending on the choice the personality of the characters is affected and the dialogue changes.

Youmu's shot type is almost exactly the same as in TD with small differences depending on the animal spirit you choose, in fact they are the same exact skills and spellcards as in TD.

I completely forgot about this before, but there are also some notable design changes:

Her eye color is now inarguably white/silver. In Ten Desires it was still much more ambiguous due to her eyes being much darker.

Prudish elements like the drawers are also no longer present and the vest is now very light similar to the design in the fighting games. As a result, she has a much more feminine-looking figure now.

The double white stripe on her ribbon is now canon. While ZUN had used a single white stripe in the C67 circle cut before, there was no precedent for a double white stripe even by the other official illustrators.

The snake(?) head on her phantom-half and possibly also the changes to the pattern on her dress are most likely story-related.

The initial Twitter exit polls are really perplexing with Aya suddenly doing really well, but Reimu being even behind Youmu.

For Youmu the situation doesn't change all that much with Marisa and Koishi still being in the lead and I'm not convinced that Reimu will remain on 4th place during the next few days.

However, keep in mind that the initial polls still completely ignore the 1st choice rates of the characters and it's not unlikely that Youmu will now have the highest 1st choice gain of all characters.

Still, Youmu has never done so well in the initial polls before, so there's hope that she will actually achieve 3rd place this time (thread pic related).

As previously predicted, Reimu passed by Youmu. There's also now a considerable gap between Youmu and the Top 3.

Pic 2 shows the point gains compared to last year until 01/28 and indeed Youmu, although gaining points, still falls behind even further after Marisa and Koishi.

Pic 3 predicts the final outcome based on data until 01/30 and also shows Youmu on 4th place. The dot shows her placing last year, the orange area is the prediction and the line segment depicts the margin of error of 10%.

This means that 4th to 5th place are within the prediction, but 1st to 8th place are still within the margin of error.

So, nothing is set in stone yet, especially with 1st choice votes still not being taken into account and twitter data generally not being entirely representative of the Touhou fandom as a whole.

Even if we take last year's 1st choice rates into consideration, Youmu would still remain on 4th place. It would, however, close the gap between Youmu and the Top 3 and widen the gap between the 4th and 5th place substantially.

With still a few days, possibly weeks to go until the detailed results, I might as well analyze the data we have so far.

Generally speaking, compared to last year Youmu has widened the gap between her and the characters below her as well as closed the gap between her and the characters above her. Not only did she manage to pass by Koishi, she's also gotten really close to Marisa.

Total participation has gone down a lot since last year: It's hasn't been that low since 2009. Because of that Youmu also has lost more than 1100 points compared to last year, however other characters in the Top 5 have lost much more.

Youmu's first choice votes have only diminished by about 150, whereas it has gone down by several hundreds for Koishi and Marisa. So, her first choice rate has actually risen to 31%. Despite the increase, Youmu's rate only ranks at 4th place with Wriggle being the only one with a higher rate within the Top 100.

In absolute numbers it's again the second highest number of first choice votes and has gotten even closer to Reimu's.

I personally think that the numbers reflect an increasing disinterest in the Touhou Popularity Poll, whereas fans passionate about specific characters remain interested. The main reason for this development is most likely the lack of new characters since last time.

Honestly, if Youmu somehow managed to replenish her popularity among the general Touhou fandom, she would have a really good chance to reach first place. A single (non-cameo) appearance might be enough.

About 40% of the voters filled out the survey.

80.82% of her previous voters voted for her again. That's a more than 5% increase from last year. Even the absolute numbers are higher than last year despite an overall decrease in votes.

Her popularity has continued to be above average among new fans since 2013.

The influx of new Youmu voters has decreased a bit (38% down from 40%), but it has also decreased proportionally in general. It's still about 8.9 percent above the average.

Here we have another neat graph that shows the percentage of points for the Top 50 over time.

Youmu has about 3% of the total points and I guess that also means that more than 1% of the total points consist of Youmu's 1st choice votes.

Youmu could also widen the gap between her and the 4th and 5th place.

Yeah, characters with short, more or less straight white hair (and often even with a hair band) have suddenly become really popular in the past decade. I guess Youmu can be seen as the original or at least the first fairly popular girl with that haircut.

Of course, there's also the old joke that Youmu's design in turn was based on Yzak Joule from Gundam Seed and given the time frame it might actually be true.

I've also seen the argument before that Youmu's black ribbon might be based on Tachibana Meiko from Snow since that VN was also released earlier in the same year, but not sure since it is an eroge.

Well, at least the highest 1st choice rate in the top 50. Wriggle Nightbug (80th place) and Mizue no Uranoshimako (167th place) have an even higher rate.
