The Western Hemisphere is now a hemisphere of freedom, with the exception of a few remaining tinpot authoritarian regimes, such as Nicaragua. This week, the Ortega regime further isolated itself in the region by approving a law that could effectively prohibit Nicaraguans who stand for democracy from running for office in next year’s elections. Implementation of it will further undermine democratic institutions and processes by prohibiting opposition figures from standing for election, threatening to turn the 2021 elections into an “election” in name only. These actions follow the National Assembly’s passage of a Foreign Agents Law that sabotages Nicaraguans’ ability to seek democratic change, and a Cybercrimes Law that systematically represses free speech.

The United States will not tolerate these threats to Nicaragua’s democracy; nor will it tolerate the oppression of the Nicaraguan people. We have taken action, including sanctioning members of Ortega’s family and corrupt inner circle, to incentivize the Ortega regime to adopt democratic reforms in advance of the country’s presidential election scheduled for November 7, 2021. Our European and OAS partners have also spoken out forcefully against the Ortega regime’s repression, and the EU has levied its own sanctions. For the good of the Nicaraguan people, we once again call on Ortega to change course, respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, and allow free and fair elections. If not, the United States will not hesitate to impose further consequences.

Sacrificing freedom for the environment? German MP suggests restrictions ‘similar’ to Covid-19 lockdowns to fight climate change

Humanity should sacrifice “personal freedom” just as many nations did during the Covid-19 pandemic in order to successfully fight climate change, a German MP has said, adding that there will “never” be a vaccine against CO2.

Germany had barely started its coronavirus vaccination campaign when a Social Democratic MP, Karl Lauterbach, warned that his compatriots need to brace themselves for yet another challenge: global warming.

“We need measures to deal with climate change that are similar to the restrictions on personal freedom [imposed] to combat the pandemic,” the professor of health economics and epidemiology at the University of Cologne wrote in a guest piece for Die Welt newspaper. He added that he hoped climate change issues would play “a dominant role” during the upcoming election campaign ahead of the federal ballot scheduled for September 2021.

The politician said he “had an impression” that Germany, Europe, and particularly the US “would not have been able to defeat the Covid pandemic without the development of a vaccine.” All these nations are still quite far from defeating the virus, as their vaccination campaigns have only just started, and the number of new infections in these nations remains relatively high. But he appeared much more concerned about the fact “there will never be a vaccine against CO2.”

Lauterbach admitted he was rather skeptical about whether his dream future, in which humanity would beat climate change through the sacrifice of freedoms, would ever be achieved. “My experience of combating the coronavirus pandemic has unfortunately made me extremely pessimistic about whether we will be able to successfully stop climate change in time,” he admitted.

US Bolsters Support for Taiwan and Tibet, Angering China

China expressed anger on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law measures to further bolster support for Taiwan and Tibet, which had been included in a $2.3 trillion pandemic aid and spending package.

China has watched with growing alarm as the United States has stepped up its backing for Chinese-claimed Taiwan and its criticism of Beijing's rule in remote Tibet, further straining a relationship under intense pressure over trade, human rights and other issues.

The Taiwan Assurance Act of 2020 and Tibetan Policy and Support Act of 2020 both contain language objectionable to China, including U.S. support for Taiwan's meaningful participation in United Nations bodies and regular arms sales.

On Tibet, which China has ruled with an iron fist since 1950, the act says sanctions should be put on Chinese officials who interfere in the selection of the exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama's successor.

Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said China was "resolutely opposed" to both acts.

"The determination of the Chinese government to safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests is unwavering," he told reporters.

The U.S. should not put the parts of the acts which "target China" into effect in order to avoid harming Sino-U.S. relations, he said, adding they were an interference in China's internal affairs.

In Taiwan, which China claims as its sovereign territory to be taken by force if needed, the government welcomed the U.S. move.

"The United States is an important ally of Taiwan's internationally, and a solid partner for sharing the values ​​of freedom and democracy," Presidential Office spokesman Xavier Chang said.

Trump, who is due to leave office on Jan. 20 after losing November's election to President-elect Joe Biden, backed down from his earlier threat to block the spending bill, which was approved by Congress last week, after he came under intense pressure from lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle.

He signed it on Sunday evening.

Georgia Makes Early Ballot Counting Mandatory In Jan. 5 Runoff

The upcoming runoff elections in Georgia will operate in the same manner as the Nov. 3 election, except for one minor change, a spokesperson from the secretary of state’s office says.

Counties are allowed to start tallying the absentee and mail-in ballots two weeks before the Jan. 5 runoff, the spokesperson told The Epoch Times.

This time, though, it will be required starting on Dec. 30, one week before Election Day. Consequently, results should be posted much more quickly than in November, when it took days before an unofficial result was available.

“We had some counties in the general election who didn’t take advantage of the extra time, and as a result, we were waiting on them,” the spokesperson said. He said some counties waited until Election Day to start counting their mail-in ballots.

Responding to criticism from poll watchers who said they didn’t have meaningful access to the counting process, the spokesperson said “most parts of the election process are open to the public.”

“But the law doesn’t require them to have to be close enough to where they can actually look on the ballots and make their own opinion about whether or not that was a mark for Smith or Brown,” he said.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, has said the Nov. 3 election was run well and he stands by the results. However, he said on Dec. 23 that he wants the state to stop allowing no-excuse absentee balloting during elections, saying the method “opens the door to potential illegal voting.”

Currently, anyone who wants to vote by mail can do so by applying for an absentee ballot—a provision that has been in place since 2005, but until this year was only ever used by 5 to 7 percent of voters.

“It makes no sense when we have three weeks of in-person early voting available,” Raffensperger said at a state hearing on Dec. 23.

Early voting for the runoff began on Dec. 7, and all but overseas ballots must be cast or received by 7 p.m. on Jan. 5.

Overseas ballots and ballot curing can still occur through Jan. 8, but the number of ballots in those categories are expected to be fairly low, the spokesperson said. Ballot curing is most common in mail-in ballots, when the voter hasn’t signed the outer envelope. Barrie Deas, chief executive of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO), says Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal is “a defeat”, with the Tory accused of having “bottled it” on fishing and “sacrificed” the country’s long-suffering fishermen.

“When push came to shove, despite the legal, moral and political strength of our case, fishing was sacrificed,” Deas lamented in a St Stephen’s Day interview reacting to news that Johnson’s deal included a further five-and-a-half year “transition” for EU trawlers — on top of the almost four years they have already had since the 2016 vote to leave the EU — to plunder British fisheries, with promises of full sovereignty after this period looking increasingly shaky.

“[T]he EU made the whole trade deal contingent on a UK surrender on fisheries,” the fishing industry leader continued.

“In the end-game, the Prime Minister made the call and caved in on fish, despite the rhetoric and assurances that he would not do what Ted Heath did in 1973,” he added.

Edward ‘Ted’ Heath was the controversial Tory prime minister who took Britain into the European Economic Community (EEC), as the EU then was, without a referendum.

Brussels had changed its rules to designate fisheries as a so-called “common resource” until its management right before the British joined, bringing the richest fisheries in Western Europe with them, in a move which would prove devastating for the country’s fishermen as the bloc shared out the lion’s share of stocks to foreign fleets.

Heath had known the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) would deliver a hammer blow to the British fishing industry but pressed on anyway, with official notes released decades later revealing officials had decided fishermen were “expendable”.

Vice President Pence was sued Sunday by Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and several other Republicans in a far-fetched bid that appeared aimed at overturning President-elect Joe Biden's election win.

The lawsuit focuses on Pence’s role in an upcoming Jan. 6 meeting of Congress to count states’ electoral votes and finalize Biden’s victory over President Trump. Typically, the vice president’s role in presiding over the meeting is a largely ceremonial one governed by an 1887 federal law known as the Electoral Count Act.

But the Republican lawsuit, which was filed against Pence in his official capacity as vice president, asks a federal judge in Texas to strike down the law as unconstitutional. The GOP plaintiffs go further: They ask the court to grant Pence the authority on Jan. 6 to effectively overturn Trump’s defeat in key battleground states.

Election law experts were dismissive of the lawsuit’s prospects for success.

“The idea that the Vice President has sole authority to determine whether or not to count electoral votes submitted by a state, or which of competing submissions to count, is inconsistent with a proper understanding of the Constitution,” said Edward Foley, a law professor at the Ohio State University.

Among the plaintiffs in the lawsuit were Kelli Ward, who chairs the Arizona Republican Party and formerly served as an Arizona state senator. Ward has amplified claims from Trump and his allies — all of which have been dismissed in court — that the 2020 election was subject to widespread fraud and was behind an unsuccessful earlier lawsuit to overturn Biden’s win in Arizona.
