The Independent has decided to fact check the cucumber.
Donald Trump claimed that he is the only one who likes cucumbers during a rambling speech in Georgia ahead of January’s runoff Senate elections.
In a bizarre 90-minute speech in Valdosta, Georgia, on Saturday evening, the US president attacked officials who certified the state for Joe Biden and falsely claimed that there had been widespread voter fraud.
However, during the speech, which was his first since losing 3 November’s election to Mr Biden, he also made a bizarre claim about cucumbers.
After segueing between various topics, Mr Trump told the crowd at the rally: “Blueberries, peppers, squash and cucumbers. Who does cucumbers around here?”
He added, as the crowd cheered: “Because I like cucumbers. I’m the only one. I like cucumbers.”
President Trump held the rally on Saturday in support of Republican senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, who will face Democratic challengers Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff on 5 January in runoff elections, after no candidate got more than 50 per cent of the vote in either race on 3 November’s election.
However, Mr Trump spoke for 90 minutes and made numerous false claims about the result of last month’s national election, before he invited Ms Loeffler and Mr Perdue on stage.

BOJ Becomes Biggest Japan Stock Owner with $434 Billion Hoard
The Bank of Japan has taken over as the biggest owner of the nation’s stocks, with the total value of its holdings climbing well above $400 billion.
Massive exchange-traded fund purchases by the BOJ to support the market amid the pandemic this year combined with subsequent valuation gains pushed its Japanese equity portfolio to 45.1 trillion yen ($434 billion) in November, according to estimates by Shingo Ide, chief equity strategist at NLI Research Institute. That marks the first time that the central bank’s holdings have eclipsed those of the Government Pension Investment Fund, which Ide estimates stood at 44.8 trillion yen last month, based on gains on top of its holdings as of end-September.
Regardless of which whale is larger, the dominant presence of these two public entities has raised concerns over their influence on market prices. The combination of “a state-run institution, the BOJ, and the country’s representative public pension fund, the GPIF, buying up local equities feels distorted,” said Satoshi Okumoto, chief executive officer at Fukoku Capital Management Inc. The GPIF, the world’s largest pension fund, increased its equity market presence in 2014 when it doubled its allocation target for local stocks to 25% as part of an effort to increase returns through a shift into riskier assets. The BOJ’s ETF purchases started in 2010 and accelerated later as part of Governor Haruhiko Kuroda’s unprecedented stimulus package aimed at revitalizing the economy.
The BOJ ramped up its support program even further this year as the coronavirus outbreak sent equity markets tumbling, saying in March it could potentially purchase 12 trillion yen worth of Japan ETFs this year, double its annual target. After a few months of heavy buying the pace has slowed back down, and it’s likely the total for 2020 will fall far short of the new theoretical limit. Even at the current pace, however, “the gap between the BOJ and GPIF’s stock holdings will widen further,” according to NLI Research’s Ide, especially if share prices continue to rise. Amid a global rebound on the back of Covid-19 vaccine developments, the benchmark Topix climbed 11% in November while the Nikkei 225 Stock Average surged 15% in its best month since 1994. That pushed unrealized gains on the BOJ’s stock purchases to over 10 trillion yen at one point in November, according to Ide. “The BOJ has never taken profits on its holdings and only continues to build its holdings in ETFs,” said Takashi Ito, an equity market strategist at Nomura Securities Co. The GPIF, meanwhile, “has to sell equities when prices are high to adjust the weight of stock holdings within its portfolio.”
NLI Research’s Ide says the BOJ “could face more scrutiny” over whether it needs to continue buying equities when prices are elevated like they are presently. BOJ Governor Kuroda has repeatedly said that the ETF purchases are needed as part of monetary stimulus to reach the BOJ’s inflation target.

Sinovac Sells $500 Million Stake as Vaccine Nears Finish Line
One of China’s biggest generic drug makers is investing around $500 million to fund research and production of a frontrunner coronavirus vaccine candidate from Sinovac Biotech Ltd. that could be weeks away from being administered across the world.
Sino Biopharmaceutical Ltd. will purchase a 15% stake in a Sinovac unit called Sinovac Life Sciences Co., the Beijing-based vaccine maker said in a statement posted on its website Monday. Sino Biopharm’s stock rose as much as 4.6% on Monday morning before paring gains. The investment comes as Sinovac’s CoronaVac shot starts being shipped to countries across the world in preparation for mass inoculation efforts. The Chinese company is expected to release data from final stage testing within days that will show how effective the vaccine is.
For Sino Biopharm, the investment is an effort at pivoting its business as a government policy to slash the prices of generic drugs puts pressure on its core revenue stream. Last week, its stock plunged 12% after its third-quarter earnings missed expectations, and analysts expect the drop in revenue to worsen in the final quarter.
Sinovac said it would use the funding for “further development, capacity expansion and manufacturing” of its vaccine. It’s now in the midst of analyzing interim data from its Phase III trials in Brazil. The next step is for the company to submit the data to the Chinese drug regulator for approval for mass use. A large ramp-up in production for distribution locally and across the globe would then follow.
Sinovac said it aims to manufacture 300 million doses of CoronaVac annually and is nearing completion of a second factory that will double its production capacity. In addition to supplying the shot in China, the company will need to ship the vaccine either in bulk or in vials to countries including Indonesia, Turkey and Brazil.
Sino Biopharm’s push into innovative therapies reflects how the generic drugs are increasingly a non-viable business model for both local and foreign pharmaceutical companies. Though the company was an early winner in Beijing’s centralized drug procurement program that awards supply tenders to the lowest bidders, its offer to slash prices by more than 90% has eroded revenue and profits. The company said in its earnings statement that it expected the effects from China’s latest round of centralized drug procurement, which cut prices by an average of 53%, to materialize in the last quarter.
Sino Biopharm’s shares have lost more than a third of their value since late July.

A convicted sex offender who ran a small private jet company was busted this week for allegedly attempting to sell sex with two underage girls to an undercover agent, the New York Attorney General said Saturday.
Paul Alexander, 57, was arrested for trafficking children across state lines as part of a months-long probe by the state prosecutor’s office and NYPD Vice Squad dubbed “Operation Mile High” — a nod to his job as an executive at Central Jet Charter, Letitia James’ office said.
The investigation began in March, when an underage victim reported Alexander to the NYPD, alleging he pimped out and abused her and other girls, the AG said.
An undercover agent posing as a John then met with Alexander, who charged him $300 for sex with 12- and 14-year-old girls.
Alexander also encouraged the agent to ply the girls with marijuana and alcohol to make them more cooperative, according to the press release.
Alexander, a Level 3 registered sex offender, was arraigned Saturday in Bronx County Criminal Court on multiple counts of sex trafficking of a child and related charges.
He is the first to be charged with the newly enacted crime of child sex trafficking in New York state, which carries a steeper penalty than trafficking of adults.

In November a Georgia poll watcher noticed the suspicious shift in votes from President Trump to Joe Biden while monitoring the interim election results on the Georgia secretary of state website.
Voter GA co-founder Garland Favorito swore in an affidavit last month with the secretary of state’s office that, “I concluded from looking at these results that this was an irregularity, since there was no obvious reason for President Trump’s totals to have decreased while former Vice President Biden’s totals increased dramatically.”
Favorito continued to research the Dominion voting machines fluctuations and “glitches” and found more evidence of votes being switched from President Trump to Joe Biden elsewhere in the state….
Favorito was not allowed to testify last week. He believes it is because his testimony would expose the Secretary of State and his twisted sidekick Gabriel Sterling.

In an interview with The Georgia Star News, Favorito explained that the information didn’t indicate which machine flipped the votes – just that the mistake occurred.
“We did find that they had flipped votes – we didn’t have to obtain the machine to figure that out. The hand count showed that they had flipped votes somewhere in that county,” he said.
Favorito explained that he’d been slated as a top ten witness for Trump’s legal team during Thursday’s State Senate hearing. Just before he was called to the stand, Favorito told The Star that an administrative assistant for the committee informed him that he was bumped to the bottom of the list “at the chairman’s discretion.”
During an interview with The John Fredericks Show, Favorito claimed that he later discovered why he’d been moved down the witness list.
“My testimony would’ve exposed the Secretary of State of Georgia, the Elections Director of Georgia, and the legal counsel of Georgia all for wrongdoing,” Favorito said. “And, being an independent, I expose corruption on both sides of the political spectrum.”

Did Your Vote Count? New Coded Ballots May Prove It Did

More than two centuries of elections in the United States have resulted in paper-based voting systems secured by a multitude of checks and procedures. New electronic voting systems require voters to trust computers and the people who program them, a trust that computer security experts say is unwarranted.
The subject is not hypothetical. Millions of voters will cast ballots on electronic machines today in the biggest test so far of the technology. To address security concerns, researchers are proposing new ways of voting that do not require voter trust in people or software.
"A trustworthy system of elections must rest on one central principle: trust no one," said Dr. Douglas W. Jones, a professor of computer science at the University of Iowa and a member of the Iowa Board of Examiners for Voting Machines and Electronic Voting Systems.
Devising such a system is challenging because it would have to satisfy opposing demands. Ideally, each voter should be able to verify that his vote was counted. But also, to ensure that voters could not show others how they voted, there could not be receipts or records of individual voters' actions.
"You have to think of the voter as a potential adversary who might want to sell his vote or be susceptible to coercion," said Dr. Ronald L. Rivest, a professor of computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
While traditional paper ballot systems achieve secrecy, each voter has to trust election officials to include his ballot in the final tally. The process is secured by the opposing interests of the major political parties, which work together to monitor every step of the process.
Though this system works reasonably well, paper ballots have other problems, experts and voting officials say. People often mark them incorrectly, invalidating their vote, and the ballots are expensive to print and securely store.
Electronic machines are also favored by voters with certain disabilities, because audio functions and other special features allow them to vote unassisted. The problem with current all-electronic systems is that they can be compromised undetectably, and there is no reason to trust that they will correctly count votes, experts say. "It's not a matter of finding better programming languages or writing better software," Dr. C. Andrew Neff, a mathematician and the chief scientist of VoteHere, a company in Bellevue, Wash., said of electronic voting. "Computer systems are inherently insecure."
Thus, the only safe way to vote electronically, computer scientists say, is to use methods that do not require trust in complex software.
One such solution, soon to be mandated in several states, is a voter-verified paper trail.
Dr. Rebecca Mercuri, a research fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, proposed a method that would require voting machines to produce paper printouts of the filled-in ballots, which would be checked by voters before being deposited in the ballot boxes. Only the paper ballots would be counted, bypassing the need to trust the voting machine.
An alternative is the "frog" voting system, proposed in a working paper released by the Caltech/M.I.T. Voting Technology Project in 2001. An all-electronic version of this approach — described by Dr. Rivest, Dr. Shuki Bruck of the California Institute of Technology and Dr. David Jefferson of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory — would use two different types of electronic voting machines and a simple memory card, the frog.
Before the election, each voter would get a frog filled with all the candidates and other ballot options. Using the first type of electronic machine, which could be at an office or local supermarket, the voter would make his choices, and they would be stored on the frog.
The day of the election, the voter would go to his precinct and take the second step: inserting the frog into a secured "vote caster" machine. That machine would read the frog and display the voter's choices on the screen. If he was satisfied, the voter would push a button and cast his vote. The frog would then be "frozen," so that its data could no longer be altered, and deposited in a ballot box as a backup record.
The first type of voting machine could have audio functions and other features requiring elaborate software. Because its output would be checked by the vote caster, it would not need to be secure. The vote caster would require heavy security, but such a machine could be made so simple, the researchers say, that securing it would be feasible.
With frogs, as with a voter-verified paper trail, voters would still have to trust people to secure the counting process. Mathematical voting systems — developed independently by Dr. Neff and Dr. David Chaum, an independent cryptographer and privacy expert — would ensure that votes were correctly counted, even in the presence of untrustworthy machines and officials.
These systems, based on two decades of cryptography research, would simultaneously satisfy the opposing demands for ballot secrecy and voter records.
Though the two systems differ in several technical respects, they would have similar overall structures. In each system, the counting process would be performed publicly on the Internet. The voters themselves and third party observers would ensure election integrity, and a group of election officials, called trustees, would protect ballot secrecy.
After voting, each voter would receive a receipt — a record of his choices that would be encrypted, or put into code, and could be deciphered only by a collaboration of all the election trustees. After polls closed, all receipts would be posted on the Internet. Each voter could use his serial number to find the image of his receipt, and make sure it matched the one he carried.
Each trustee would perform one step toward decoding the receipts, and the decrypted ballots would also be posted on the Internet, where anyone could count them, but without serial numbers so they could no longer be traced to individual voters. Students at George Washington University, under the direction of Dr. Poorvi Vora, Dr. Jonathan Stanton and Dr. Rahul Simha, all computer science professors, are working to program Dr. Chaum's system for a trial student election. Dr. Neff's company is on the verge of releasing a software version of his system.
Dr. Josh Benaloh, a cryptographer at Microsoft Research, said he was confident that the two systems would be workable and that the security and privacy claims by Dr. Neff and Dr. Chaum were mathematically verifiable.
But other researchers said that the cryptographic approaches would be unlikely to be accepted because they were too complex for most voters to understand.
"You have to trust the cryptographer," said Dr. Jones of Iowa. "It may be that you could have a crypto-based voting technology that rests on something that could be understood by a high school senior. If that happens, I'll say `huzzah!' but I don't think we're there."
Dr. Benaloh disagreed. "You don't have to trust the cryptographer," he said. "If you're a conspiracy theorist, you can take the time to educate yourself and gain absolute trust in the system."
