/tan/ - Board-tans

Some context that won't help at all: Steven Universe is a show featuring sentient space rocks ("Gems") who project a body around themselves to appear (to human standards) as humanoid women. One of them (Rose Quartz) fucked a man (Greg Universe), which led to the birth of half-human, half-Gem series protagonist Steven Universe. Because of the intricacies involved in cross-species reproduction, Rose Quartz had to give up her life in order to birth Steven, and passed her gem on to him in doing so (the exact details of the process aren't fully explained). This caused tension between Greg and another Gem, Pearl, who had feelings towards Rose Quartz and was less than happy about getting cuckqueaned only to see her beloved die. These tensions were finally resolved come the episode "Mr. Greg". Elated, the ship-happy /sugen/ quickly came up with a hypothetical result of them hooking up romantically: a little half-sister for Steven, whom they named Gretel.

Gretel is a young caucasian girl around 6 to 8 years old. She has medium length dark pink hair with flipped ends, blue eyes, a prominent pointy nose, and a giant pearl embedded in her forehead. Her clothing varies, but she's usually seen wearing shirts or dress shirts with shorts underneath, and normal sneakers or simple open shoes. Her shirt will however always display a star shape.

She's a typical young girl in character. Happy-go-lucky, playful, and with a childlike inquisitive nature and big imagination. She's pacifistic, and has great trouble dealing with the knowledge she's one of very few people who can protect humanity against horrifying Gem monsters, by means of physical combat and containment. She may also have inherited some of her mother's traits, like her orderliness or perfectionism, but this isn't explicitly stated.

Because Gretel was conceived as board OC before being promoted to board-tan, her network of relationships consists of members of the show. She seems to get along fine with everyone except, ironically, the resident peacekeeper and protagonist Steven Universe, who wants to be a good brother to her, but has trouble coming to terms with the fact that Gretel's birth resulted in Pearl's death. Gretel's great similarity to her mother (and her possibly actually being Pearl if the latter were raised under different circumstances) also has Steven questioning the nature of his identity, as he was born in the same manner.

/ara/-tan is a caucasian woman somewhere in her forties. She has shoulderlength brown or blond hair split in the middle. Her body isn't that of a young girl anymore, but she's got curves in all the right places and an ample bosom to go with her fuller figure. Make-up can vary, with her wearing anything from lipstick, eye shadow and some rouge all at once, to nothing at all. Outfits are likewise varied, but she usually sticks to simple, normal clothing like blouses, skirts and other casual clothing when not engaging in certain proclivities. She does however always wear simple sphere-shaped earrings.

/ara/-tan is mostly a traditional mother figure. She lives with her son, who is unnamed and simply referred to as Shota-tan (despite the name he can vary anywhere from child to late teenager), but there is no father figure present - whether she's divorced or a widow is deliberately kept vague. She dotes on her son, and can get too physically affectionate with him at times, but at least knows these urges are wrong and tries to keep them contained (not that she's very successful at it). How Shota-tan feels about their situation isn't specified, but he doesn't seem to put up a fight when things get out of hand.

Despite their overlap and the board having an interest in it, /ara/ and /ss/ are different things, so /ara/-tan's options aren't limited to Shota-tan. She can help herself get relief using her trusty dildo, "Kirby", and her yoga partner Mrs. Mocha can also give her quite the workout at times.

Whether the wounds from the Exodus were still too fresh at the time or because some people have no sense of cultural history, some board members couldn't look at the original design's haircut without screeching "SJW". They harshly rejected the original design and proved unwilling to budge. Other designs were suggested to appease both supporters and detractors, but only one enjoyed some modicum of success.

The other /cyber/-tan's design is a lot more subdued. A simple black haircut, no (visible) augmentations or implants, and regular clothes and headphones with cool colours. Overall the design draws more inspiration from cypherpunk, where privacy and anonimity are more stressed than in the loud and openly countercultural cyberpunk. At the base level however, there are still similarities to the original /cyber/-tan's design. She's still a caucasian woman, still smokes her e-cigarette, and her limbs are cybernetic and may or may not be detachable. It's even speculated she might have extra port holes for up to 6 arm attachments.

This /cyber/-tan however doesn't use her enhancements to fight physically. She's envisioned more as a runner. Whether an edgerunner (parkouring her way through the city to relay messages) or a netrunner (combining virtual reality with hacking to steal company secrets) is a matter of personal headcanon preference.

At the moment, various factions of /cyber/ (the board) are still in a Cold War-esque stalemate in regards to which is the "official" board-tan. People are free to choose either, both, invent a third, abolish the concept altogether, or even claim the original /cyber/-tan is how cypherpunk!/cyber/-tan chooses to represent herself in cyberspace.

Originally, /fem/-tan started out as an avatar for one of the board's drawfags who kept doodling her to train her drawing speed. Since she kept popping up and no one could agree on another "official" design for the board-tan, she won by default. Avatar!/fem/-tan appears to be kinder than the board-tan equivalent, but their personalities probably aren't that different since the latter's is derived from the former's. Presumably /fem/-tan is just a caricaturised version. Aside from that, the two can be distinguished by Avatar!/fem/-tan lacking the 8chan earrings (although this shouldn't be treated as absolute, given that artists could also just forget to add them).

A relative newcomer to the cast, Amane was created to represent Operation Torrential Downpour, a fan effort to raise awareness of, and combat, bad translations and censorship of Japanese games under the excuse of "localisation".

Amane's a Japanese woman with long black hair, partially flowing in two sidebangs, partially tied up in a ponytail with a hairclip whose both ends are shaped like stylised water drops. She wears make-up around her eyes and on her lips, vaguely reminiscent of that of geisha and maiko. Amane dresses in various kimono with lavish colours and/or designs, which always leave her shoulders bare and provide plenty of cleavage, and are kept closed by an obi decorated with an obidome in the form of the 8chan infinity symbol. On her feet she wears simple geta with white tabi underneath. Despite already being an adult, Amane is very short. Luckily her ample bosom prevents her from being mistaken for a child.

A college graduate and a polyglot, Amane has a special interest in accurate translations. She'll loudly campaign against those who deface foreign works by rewriting scripts and dialogues according to their whims, inserting memes or topical jokes that are sure to date the work, or removing parts that clash with their personal sensibilities. Amane demands excellence of translations, as of everything else. She holds herself to this same standard by taking minute care of all aspects of her behaviour and appearance (this may however also stem from a complex as a result of her short height, making her feel like a child). For whatever reason, Amane seems to consider /v/-tan a suitable wedding partner, and would like Vivian's support in this by trying to convince her to call her "mother". Could be Amane's attracted to /v/-tan's dedication and stubborn refusal to lose against the SJW plaguing his hobby. Could be she's (nearing?) "Christmas Cake" status and anyone will do in her desperation.

Monkey see, monkey do. Like several other communities, Reddit saw /v/ having fun with their newly created daughter Vivian, and decided they wanted in on that. So they too donated some money to help women make games, and when prompted for an OC to cameo, set about to make Gilda Mars, a daughter of their own. However, as Reddit is more renowned for stealing content than actually creating it, results were underwhelming at best. Even the name G. Mars ("gamers", lol!) was but a pale imitation of the original. Gilda was quickly forgotten by Reddit, who decided they could just appropriate Vivian and piggyback of /v/'s efforts, and nowadays Gilda ironically only appears in the #GG threads on /v/ anymore, where a couple of diehard fans have declared it canon that /v/-tan adopted her because some random anon filled in an adoption form template once.

In her current design, Gilda looks like an underdeveloped caucasian girl somewhere in her teens, with amber eyes and long straight hair that varies between blue or purple depending on the artist. She always wears a white pom-pom hat with a bending antenna ending in an orange pom-pom (vaguely similar to an anglerfish's antenna), and both side ends also ending in respectively an orange and blue (referencing Reddit's up- and downvote system) pom-pom. Her neck is always protected by a yellow scarf. Gilda also wears a longsleeved blue sweater with yellow accents at the end of her sleeves and three big yellow buttons to keep it closed. Sometimes it fits just right and below it Gilda wears a black skirt, sometimes the sweater is so oversized there's no need for a skirt. Below that there's usually black pants or leggings, followed by simple blue rainboots with possible yellow higlights.

Gilda's defining characteristic would be her idiocy. Hopelessly naive, lost inside her own little world, and unable to tell real life life from Reddit where discussion can be won or lost with up- and downvotes (to which she ascribes value and prestige like regular people would to money), Gilda often barely ranks above an intellectually disabled person in terms of cognitive prowess (ironic, since Reddit originally intended her to be an academic counterpart to Vivian). Based on a Wondermark comic strip, SJW once tried to turn "sealioning" into a pejorative. However, "sealioning" refers to politely asking your opposition to back up their statements with reasonable arguments and viable sources, both of which are decidedly not the SJW's forte. Once #GG supporters figured out SJW's were essentially trying to push a narrative saying proof and logic should not be required in their rhetoric, they once again decided to have fun with it in their own way. They set up a fundraiser page on the WWF homepage and donated enough money to symbolically adopt a sealion. Ever since, a sealion has been considered Vivian's pet, although it enjoys more popularity on Reddit than it does on 8chan.

Isabeau Essex, also simply called Izzy or Ethics, is a run of the mill sealion. Whiskered snout, flippers, big blubber reserves, a fur that varies from brown to grey, big enough for Vivian to ride if she ever needs to get anywhere by sea (or land - she doesn't seem to mind the discomfort of Izzy's less than ideal movements on land). He's sometimes mistakenly depicted as a white seal, or of much smaller stature.

For an animal, he's remarkably intelligent. Not only does he perfectly understand human speech, he's capable of speech himself. But in spite of that, he's still a little dopey. To Freya, he's prime bully material. Izzy does not seem to have much interest in videogames or ethical standards himself, helping out where he can mostly because he knows it makes his owner happy. He enjoys lazing around with Vivian, keeping her company while she's gaming on her own.

The #GG cast is extensive, but many more characters were proposed who either failed or were gradually forgotten and made no comeback. Here are a few of the more well-known ones.

Archive-tan was in charge of archiving everything, a central tenet to #GG as their opponents are wont to delete or alter content that could provide them with ammo. She looked pretty much how you expect a sexy secretary or librarian to look, and had no established personality. These days Danielle has taken her job.

Baker-tan had close to nothing to do with #GG to begin with. She was only created because anons in the #GG general thread on /v/ kept asking who would "bake the next bread" (make the next thread) when a thread would hit 700 replies or page 13 in the catalogue. She looked like a regular baker with the 8chan infinity logo on her baker's hat. These days her job too has been relegated to Danielle.

Near the beginning of #GamerGate, known furry lolcow with an inflation fetish Andrew Dobson skimmed a couple of totally not biased articles on #GG and decided that made him an expert, so he made a comic criticising the consumer revolt and invented Occu-lass to make some point. She's a bubbly redheaded college grad wearing a GIR or Chuck hat and an open blue-and-orange striped sweater, with a navy blue shirt underneath. Because the comic implicitly admits she's dumb and smelly, she made a great opponent for Vivian in the early days. But as time went on, Lillian and Gilda became better suited for the role, and Occu-lass died an unnoticed death.

GGWiki-tan was/is a forced mascot for the #GamerGate wiki. Her design is still a work in progress, as it's far too cluttered to work, but she's a teen to represent that the wiki's still got a lot of growing to do. No real personality has been established besides her having high self-esteem. Unlike the other tans, her creation wasn't the result of a natural community effort, so coupled with the current disinterest in the wiki and the main artist's bad art skills, she never stood a chance to begin with.

With one character being inherited from /mlp/ and the other being a random anon's OC, at one point some people decided /pone/ needed a board-tan designed by the board for the board. Thus was born Red.

Red is a cream-coloured earth pony (later redesigned as a pegasus because people liked the idea of all three races being represented, but it's generally left to individual preference how anyone wants to portray her) with a wild unkempt red mane and hair. She either has no cutie mark, as an allegory for both her and the board's as of yet unfilled potential, or, more commonly, a "spoiler" symbol to symbolise the board's one feature /mlp/ doesn't have: it allows porn when it's spoilered. The one piece of clothing Red always wears is a black bandana featuring 8chan's infinity logo around her neck.

Compared to the other board-tans, Red is fairly dour. She's cynical and unpleasant to most people under normal circumstances, with a particular hatred towards authority figures (especially Royal Guards), but she holds no grudges and as long as there's enough rum to go around, she loves a good party and will freely share her booze with anyone. Red claims to be one quarter "Saddle Arabian" (this may be a fabrication on her part), but other than an expressed disgust towards all things related to pigs it's not a part of her character. Red also swears like a sailor, appropriate given that she is a pirate. Aboard her ship "The Crippled Midget", she sails the seas and lives life to the fullest, not bothering to care about tomorrow as long as she's got wind in the sails, money in the chest and a bottle in hoof.

Red has a near-identical colour scheme to Ruby. This is no coincidence: the anon who offered the first concept of Red understood the board's desire for a collectively made mascot, but sympathised with Ruby and her fans enough to throw it in as a reference. Because of that, it is now generally accepted that Red and Ruby are sisters when they appear together. A more obscure theory is that they're the same pony: set in a scenario where Ruby's casino heist (see above) failed, Ruby would have been tortured, had her horn snapped off, and been thrown in a river and left for dead, until the current dragged her to sea and she was scooped up by a passing pirate ship. Sometime late 2015, a CYOA was started on /pone/ starring a nameless sketched pony. The idea was that the board would gradually fill her in with features. She was a blank canvas ready to become whatever the board decreed she should become.

/pone/ had other plans.

Sketchy, as the board took to calling her, is a basic sketch of a pony. Her only detailed features are her face, ears, stubby tail, and naughty bits. She sometimes has a (fake) pink mane, one of the few actual gifts participating posters gave her.

Sketchy is very docile and naive, with close to no knowledge of the world. She relies on anons to guide her actions and advise her. Because of that she's both killed and been killed multiple times, something which has possibly left her traumatised. She certainly does not enjoy her dreams.

For all the suffering they put her through, Sketchy's meek innocence appealed to the board, who eventually accepted her as a fourth board-tan.

Sketchy is alone in the world, although a sister named Messy has been suggested.

Although each of the board-tan ponies have their own adventures, meta ensemble stories have been written where they all live together in the /pone/ mansion in "Infinity Acres", sometimes with a beleaguered anon through whom the audience can self-insert. (All stories can be considered separate, so continuity is not a problem.) In these scenarios Red and Aryanne tend to butt heads while Ruby tries to keep the peace (in vain) and Sketchy ends up silently taking Red's abuse when she remembers her existence.

Ojou-s/a/ma is a young girl around 8 to 10 years old. She’s Caucasian with blonde hair she wears in a side braid (held together by a yellow bow) and front bangs. She has red eyes, although it’s unknown if those are her natural colour or if she’s wearing coloured lenses. Ojou-s/a/ma is always seen wearing a square neckline dress with a short-sleeved maroon-coloured laced bodice and a dark faded pink skirt with a yellow embellishment at the hem. Her neckline, sleeves and hem are all also further embellished with white frills. Curiously, Ojou-s/a/ma staunchly refuses to wear shoes or socks of any kind, going barefoot at all times.

As her name implies, Ojou-s/a/ma is a rich girl, and lives in a mansion. Her parents appear absent, leaving her the mistress of the house, a fact of which she’s well aware. Ojou-s/a/ma does as she pleases, and isn’t afraid to throw her weight around to get what she wants. Ojou-s/a/ma’s in charge, and you better know it.

Her great loves in life are manga and anime, which she loves to both consume and discuss all day long. Allegedly, her favourite anime of all time is Initial D. To a lesser degree, she also has an interest in wider Japanese culture. Anything outside of those fields of interest she meets with disdain if not outright hostility. She has zero tolerance for western media or casuals, whom she will mock like the smug anime girl she is.

Ojou-s/a/ma shares her house with various beleaguered meidos, who have little choice but to put up with her antics and clean up after her. However, in rare cases, they don’t seem to be above disciplining her if she goes too far. The meidos all have unique designs, none of them even sharing identical uniforms. The one thing they all have in common is their red to pink hair with bangs worn in loops to evoke the 8chan infinity symbol. The meidos don’t seem to have individual names, and nothing is known of their personalities.

Cure-chan is an anthropomorphic representation of the very concept of a cure. She was created on October 13, 2014 in a flockdraw on skycow.us as a response to Ebola-chan and her growing popularity, although Cure-chan represents cures in general, not just one to the Ebola-virus.

Cure-chan being framed as a counterpart is obvious from her design: like Ebola-chan, she wears a white nurse uniform with accompanying nurse cap (though hers displays either a blue cross or a caduceus). Often she’s also seen wearing gloves, thigh high stockings and/or a mouth mask (some claim this may be to hide that she’s secretly a youkai, a kuchisake-onna). Originally, she even had twintails like Ebola-chan, although these have since been removed in favour of flowing long hair.

She distinguishes herself however with a few notable contrasts. Her hair is light blue instead of pink, she’s taller, and her figure is intentionally a mature one unlike Ebola-chan’s more childish build.

As far as her personality goes, Cure-chan is fairly normal. She’s driven by a desire to help the sick recover and takes it seriously, but she can come off as distant and aloof in spite of that.

The other cure-tan most closely associated with Cure-chan in her setting is Zmapp-chan. Zmapp looks like a young Caucasian woman who wears a white nurse’s uniform with green accents, a nurse’s cap with a green cross, and white thigh highs. Her hair is green with leaves in it (all probably a reference to the drug being synthesised from the tobacco plant Nicotinana benthamaiana) and is worn in a ponytail or sidetail depending on the artist.

Zmapp-chan is a representation of the ZMapp drug designed to combat Ebola. As such, her enmity towards Ebola-chan is far more personal. Ebola-chan however doesn’t seem to consider her serious competition and generally makes a fool out of her. Although no conclusive data exists on her effectiveness, it’s generally agreed that Zmapp-chan cannot defeat Ebola-chan, but Cure-chan can.

Zmapp-chan has two older sisters, based on failed prototypes. MB-003, also just called Mb, is the eldest sister. She has mouse ears and buck teeth on account of her vaccine consisting of three human-mouse chimeric mAbs. Not having a job to worry about anymore has made her carefree and lazy, and she’s traded in her nurse’s uniform for casual wear. She carries her green hair in a bob cut.

Zmab, based on the ZMAb vaccine, is the middle child. Losing her job has made her uptight, despite since having found a different regular job that has nothing to do with medicine. She worries over her little sister and often clashes with Mb over the latter’s lax demeanour. Zmab no longer wears a nurse’s uniform, instead wearing a casual but presentable outfit consisting of a simple striped sweater and regular pants. As with all sisters of the family, her hair is green, and she wears it in a long ponytail and sharp front- and sidebangs.

Other lesser known characters include Panacea-tan, who may fill a supreme overseer role similar to that of Pestilence or Mother Rot in the disease-tans pantheon, as well as Cure-chan’s older sister Cure-sama. Whereas Cure-chan is supposed to be representative of medicine and drugs, Cure-sama exemplifies the nurse or doctor administrating the treatment. Their similar names, personalities, and looks can make it difficult to tell the two apart, but Cure-sama’s hair is kept in a ponytail with side bangs. She also keeps a pet snake.

The cure-tan setting is not very elaborate in terms of lore, but contains plenty of characters with little to no known personal information, including various tans modelled after healthcare organisations and multiple vaccine-tans.

Once upon a time, a wannabe troll came to /furry/ and tried to stir up drama using drawings of his OC fursona, Bushy.

/furry/ responded by drawing his fursona getting raped by a horse.

Laughs were had at his expense and the troll slunk off, but the experience somehow endeared the board to his fursona enough that he got adopted.

Bushy is an anthropomorphic arctic fox. Excepting his black paws and ears, his fur is completely white. He wears a long blue and white striped scarf around his neck as his only clothing. He seems to suffer from a superiority complex, being cocky until someone calls his bluff, which quickly turns him into an insecure wreck. He's also gay but very deep in denial. N8 loves to goad him into homosexual acts which Bushy will swear up and down do not interest him even as he goes along with them. As such, his entire existence is pretty much a "no homo" joke.
