/tan/ - Board-tans

The original and most well-known design of /cyber/-tan is a caucasian woman with a classic cyberpunk look. She comes with many varied haircuts (ranging from a professional-looking bun to mohawks or a bald head with a single lock of hair) in lots of unnatural hair colours (the original artist actively encouraged people to switch these things up, making a standard look hard to determine, but the more unconventional haircuts seem to be the more popular ones). Her head is often shaved partially bald because of her "head nodes" on the side, into which she can plug accesories. Her eyes are likewise cybernetics, in a baby blue colour, and her eyebrows are functional implants that also serve as attachments points for her visor when she chooses to wear it.

Aside from that, /cyber/-tan has an 8chan infinity symbol tattoo under her left eye, several piercings in her ear (these too are subject to change), and visible neck augmentations, including an entry port on the back of her head that allows her to jack into computer networks or the internet. She's always smoking an e-cigarette, and is often accompanied by little drones that she may or may not have built and programmed herself. Her outfit, like her hairstyle or -colour, is subject to change, but usually consists of a seemingly random assortment of clothes which would make her stand out in mainstream society but make her fit right in in punk society. Recurring elements include shirts with the number 8 printed on, her visor, her trusty Mateba revolver, and lots of different clothing patches. She can sometimes be seen wearing a leather jacket with patches including the kanji for infinite, and a QR code that leads to 8ch.net/cyber/.

Regarding her personality, the original artist described her as "a mix of [Major] Kusanagi and Tank Girl" (considering the Major's subdued and introspective nature in the Ghost in the Shell movie, he possibly referred to manga!Kusanagi or anime!Kusanagi, whose more open personalities are less difficult to reconcile with the rambunctious Tank Girl). /cyber/-tan is likely a fairly positive person despite living in a dystopia, with a rebellious streak and a penchant for violence. One picture also suggests she might ironically work in law enforcement (assuming it's not just a homage to the Major), which may explain her constant change of looks as a means of disguising herself.

Whether the wounds from the Exodus were still too fresh at the time or because some people have no sense of cultural history, some board members couldn't look at the original design's haircut without screeching "SJW". They harshly rejected the original design and proved unwilling to budge. Other designs were suggested to appease both supporters and detractors, but only one enjoyed some modicum of success.

The other /cyber/-tan's design is a lot more subdued. A simple black haircut, no (visible) augmentations or implants, and regular clothes and headphones with cool colours. Overall the design draws more inspiration from cypherpunk, where privacy and anonimity are more stressed than in the loud and openly countercultural cyberpunk. At the base level however, there are still similarities to the original /cyber/-tan's design. She's still a caucasian woman, still smokes her e-cigarette, and her limbs are cybernetic and may or may not be detachable. It's even speculated she might have extra port holes for up to 6 arm attachments.

This /cyber/-tan however doesn't use her enhancements to fight physically. She's envisioned more as a runner. Whether an edgerunner (parkouring her way through the city to relay messages) or a netrunner (combining virtual reality with hacking to steal company secrets) is a matter of personal headcanon preference.

At the moment, various factions of /cyber/ (the board) are still in a Cold War-esque stalemate in regards to which is the "official" board-tan. People are free to choose either, both, invent a third, abolish the concept altogether, or even claim the original /cyber/-tan is how cypherpunk!/cyber/-tan chooses to represent herself in cyberspace.
