70af65 No.27151 [Last50 Posts]

If fags haven't seen already it's a thread where a season of TNG is rewatched where a brief review is given of each episode and a small dump of reaction tier images and webms are made. Feel free to join in and shitpost. Also if you have any requests for scenes you want webm'd make them here.

Rating Scale

Since fags asked for me to give a rating on an episode when giving an overview here's my rating scale before there is autistic screeching, well more so than usual.

Ratings Explained:

>0-1

Truly awful and do yourself a favor and avoid watching an episode with this rating.

>2-3

Bad episodes that while you could suffer through there is no real need for you to put yourself through such torture.

>4-5

The pass mark. Decent episodes that are okay but you really won't be upset if you miss them.

>6-7

Good episodes that are worth a watch. There is not really any reason to avoid them.

>8+

Truly great episodes that you must watch.

Episode 1 - Evolution

>3/10

Starting off I think I am being quite harsh here with the score. It's a good all round story and episode in it's own right apart from one glaring shit smear that stains it; Wesley. For whatever reason Wesley was not really that annoying in Season 2 but now it seems he's a bit of an obnoxious Wunderkinder who manages to release a nanite plague that threatens to destroy the ship and not even get a slap on the wrist for it. As I've said think I am being harsh but I was restraining myself hard to not punch the screen whenever I saw Wesley.

Anger at Wesley aside should point out this is perhaps the start of the truly decent filler episodes that plague TNG; i.e. the episodes that are neither here nor there but if it's on you don't mind watching it. Also the music used is surprisingly top notch and well done, perhaps highly underappreciated.

Episode 2 - The Ensigns of Command

>4/10

I'm was flip flopping between a 5 and a 4 for this. The episode annoys me as it feels that it could have been pulled off better than it was. The autistic girl falling for Data didn't come off very natural. The acting from the locals was kind of hilarious since everyone sounded like "I'm Julius Caeser Salad and so is my wife!" and the Sheliak were drawn out without fleshing out who they were exactly. Despite all this some strong scenes but not quite as good deliveries all round as there could have been.

Episode 3 - The Survivors

>5/10

I think I am being harsh with this one especially with the relatively good ending to the mystery that only serves to raise more questions when you think about it. It's may be yet another god being trope but it kind of feels like there could have been a lot more to this story than meets the eye. Back of my mind during this episode made me think it was another "Q" that the crew had encountered. I think overall when I give it some thought this episode being treated as a filler episode is what brings it down, it could easily have been stretched to a few other episodes later down the line and uncovering more of a mystery.

Episode 4 - Who Watches the Watchers

>5/10

Probably going to get yelled at for this one but I don't think it was great. Good certainly, but not great. Even though I struggle to find any true fault with it I feel it doesn't wow in any particular way. Maybe cause Season 3 has been relatively decent so far it's hard to find anything that is overly special. Will say though it seems that whenever the Federation tries to do anything sneaky it literally blows up in their face.

Episode 5 - The Bonding

>5/10

Another rather good episode that was harmed more so that the delivery wasn't quite up to scratch. It's almost annoying that they have good ideas yet don't exactly execute them as well as they hoped. Wesley is a prime example in this episode where he had a good scene but you are left with the impression it could have been better. Quite a morally grey episode which is good and I feel so far Season 3 has had several of already. There's no real right or wrong here but what is considered the best option.

Episode 6 - Booby Trap

>5/10

Yet another episode I feel like I am rating okayish cause I don't believe the delivery was as good as it could have been. In this particular case I felt there needed to be more interaction between Picard reviewing the recordings of the Ayy Captain than Geordi pulling up an /r9k/ simulation. Maybe even the Ayy Captain being the one to provide the solution but unable to implement it. I also feel that destroying the ship at the end was unncessary all things considered. That ship belonged in a museum.

I would say that Star Trek had a massive issue with establishing a universe as it were until the films starting coming out and about 4th Season TNG. It had very much an alien of the week thing going for it and whole Western Frontier atmosphere which to be fair is what it was sold as but at the cost you didn't really know what minor powers or even the major powers were and what were their motives. Kind of hard to add complexity and depth to the show if nobody is fleshed out at all.

Much like the Tzenkethi coming out of nowhere. As did the Cardassians I suppose, but they went on to be fleshed out at least. And even leaving aside people the Feds had unseen wars with, some namedrops of the First Federation or the Tholians or the Gorn in the TNG era would have helped fill out the sense of shared universe.

To their credit did namedrop Tholians and Gorn in DS9 and later TNG but never revealed them. Funny enough they did mention Breen a lot towards the end of TNG and again never showed them, hyped them up through DS9, rarely showed them till literally last minute and were "Oops out of time!"

There has officially never been anything set in stone what the Trek universe looks like from a galaxy map and from what has been estalbished there is a lot of contradictions.

Anyway time for next batch of episodes.

Episode 7 - The Enemy

>6/10

It's a typical two soldiers from opposing sides having to work together to survive story. Overall not a bad episode, I don't have much to say for it really, it was clearly setting up things to come. Wesley was annoying, Geordi and Romulan section weren't as strong as they could be I felt. There was an interesting bit with Worf and Romulan have compatible blood or some other bullshit that felt a little forced, with a point I don't think was addressed as well as it was. Worf letting him die felt like they were trying to point out it was out of spite but it was Worf respecting the wishes of the Romulan who wished to die with dignity which says a lot about Worf's character. He may hate an enemy with all his heart but he will still respect their wishes.

Episode 8 - The Price

>3/10

This episode has a lot of good stuff in it and I see where they were trying to go with it but it did not come off well, a lot of it felt really forced. The Ferengi being ruthless businessmen rather than manlet space pirates was a better rendition of them. Some good bits pointing out that Federation isn't exactly the most ideal club to do business with. The Troi love story though feels a bit cringe with the guy being a complete Jerkoff where you wish Jellico was around to punch him in the face. Probably been harsh with rating overall but I felt annoyed by this episode.

>3/10

Another episode I feel that wasn't quite as good as it could have been but had some good ideas. Plot could be summed up as Space Bikers wanting to appear like Big Guys but really want to have some clay. Characters were overall a bit annoying and I felt like the Space Bikers were wannabee Klingons but pussy versions of them.

Episode 10 - The Defector

>5/10

I felt this episode needed to be a bit longer just to flesh it out a bit more. While somewhat of a decent episode on it's own right with some insight into Romulans and how they thought. I think that I may be harsh cause I've watched the show before and knew it was clearly going to be a Romulan Trap and not the good maid kind but even then I still felt what brings this down is some glaring plot holes. That they weren't able to immediately identify that it was a high ranking Romulan Admiral. Like how Federation ships don't patrol the equvialent of the Berlin Wall in Space yet Klingons can get there in a jiffy. Speaking of the Klingons there's a scene at the end of this episode where everyone is "Oh yeah shit, the Klingons exist" as if they had all forgotten. Were Romulans dumb enough to think if they went to war with the Federation that the Klingon Empire would sit idle? Later episodes do later stress that the only thing holding the peace and keeping the Alpha Quadrant from tearing itself apart is the Klingons and Federation but it's a bit strange they did not stress it hard here.

Episode 11 - The Hunted

>6/10

I think rating of this episode is going to vary heavily based on who is watching. It's clearly about Vietnam Vets and how they were mistreated and trying to be free while coping with their PTSD. The idea of augmented super soldiers is something actually feel like has not been done enough in Trek despite there being Khan and Jem'Hadar. Think someone would have called these guys come Dominion War or something? Should point out that O'Brien of all people is the only person who seems to manage to get a successful pin on the guy without help, while Worf seems to have a somewhat even fight with him before losing to some boxes. I am though wondering why the prime directive was thrown out the window in this episode for a bit because the goberment they were talking to said someone was a naughty goy?

Are you fucking serious? The Defector is one of the masterpieces of TNG. It's a goddamn 10/10.

>That they weren't able to immediately identify that it was a high ranking Romulan Admiral.

What, do you think the Romulan military updates Starfleet with its personnel records on a regular basis? I have no problem with believing that Starfleet officers couldn't identify Jarok from appearance and voice alone. Hell, maybe they don't even have any communications recordings of Jarok due to his underlings handled direct communications during his military campaigns. Maybe Starfleet does have records, but they're from many decades earlier. Voices and appearances age, even for long-lived Romulans. Either way I find it quite believable that they couldn't positively identify him until the Romulans formally made a diplomatic protest identifying him by name.

During the episode, there's several lines about messages to and from the Klingon government. This sort of thing is called "subtlety". It's meant to make the attentive viewer think throughout the episode "Why are they talking about Klingons?", followed by an "Oh!" during the reveal.

Also, why do you suggest Starfleet doesn't do patrols? Are you forgetting the fact that the Enterprise was within spitting distance of the neutral zone during the opening?

>Were Romulans dumb enough to think if they went to war with the Federation that the Klingon Empire would sit idle?

No, but I think they didn't factor in the depth of the alliance with regards to joint military activities during peacetime. You'll note that before the season one finale, the Romulans were rather isolationist, and soon after the events of this episode, the Romulans start all sorts of shady shit to try to break up the alliance.

This episode masterfully fleshes out details of the Federation-Klingon alliance and sets up motivations for the Romulans' later activities in the Klingon civil war, while at the same time being a classic Trek morality tale of a man trying to redeem himself and act in the best interests of his people despite the personal tragic consequences of those actions.

@24:40 Data mentions the Irish unification of 2024 as an example of terrorism being successful, and because of that, the BBC refused to air the episode. It didn’t air on the U.K. government’s station until 2007, though it did air on satellite and cable (sometimes with that reference cut). Imagine if he said the same thing about Islamic terrorism. Finn scores points when he tells Dr. Crusher that by supplying the security forces with aid while ignoring the separatists, the Federation has chosen a side - it's refreshing to see the Federation painted as morally grey once in a while. 7/10 for philosophical value because it questions the definition of terrorists & freedom fighters.

I always thought it was interesting that the Federations technology is so advanced (impossible physics etc.) but their biotech didn't seem to keep pace. I guess the Eugenics Wars plays a large part of why that is. It's interesting to think that there's an alternate universe where Bashir is still retarded. >it's a masterpiece

It's good but not a masterpiece. When you scrutnize the episode it makes you headdesk.

>Maybe Starfleet does have records

Are you suggesting that Starfleet has no intelligence we all know the answer is no it doesn't and wouldn't have had done a full background check? Admirals are kind of hard to not notice and tend to be in a very public light.

>Also, why do you suggest Starfleet doesn't do patrols?

You don't do a patrol with a single ship. It would be like if US was defending the border with East Germany during the Cold War with a single Tank. You do it with a squadron and lot of forces otherwise you are basically inviting everyone in. What this episode ridiculously implies is that the Federation barely patrols the Romulan Neutral Zone leaving woefully undefended and I find that hard to swallow.

>Implying Romulans wouldn't be aware of the Federation-Klingon Alliance

They Romulans would then not have dared provoked a war without breaking up that Alliance first since they would know they wouldn't stand a chance especially with their history together. It was such a dumb move and poorly planned move on the Romulan part that they were risking open war against an Alliance they knew they could not win against.

>>27299

>The High Ground

Glad someone mentioned the Irish unification. Was going to talk about it but forgot. Yeah the US really did not understand what the IRA was about or what they were doing at the time. Then again they wrote this episode when Bin Laden was still a US ally.

As for the rest I do think that the message is good but I don't think it's well delivered. It was like they were trying to make a point but didn't know how to make said point.

>>27300

The redshirt looks pink because in TNG redshirts wore crimson not red. It was because at the time the lighting and filters they used meant that red didn't come out that well unless they used crimson. I use ffmpeg to encode and the source is the Bluray version of TNG.

Bit of a boy who cried wolf story but a fun one.

Episode 14 - A Matter Of Perspective

>4/10

I like the premise of Riker's dick getting him into trouble. I just find it retarded when they figure out there's radiation tearing up the ship they don't seem more concerned about it. The way they end it does feel a bit abrupt and the fact that Riker is charged more over a murder rather than the destruction of a space station leaves me scratching my head.

Episode 16 - The Offspring

8/10

Probably going to get "wtf?" comments for this one but I think I might even be rating this one too low. This was a top tier episode with a good moral message and very thought provoking.Basically comes down to parent vs state, who should have more say on how to raise a child? I think the bit about assigning gender at start would likely cause a shitshow on tumblr if they watched it today but the rest of the episode is interesting to watch and it makes you think even about human development. Plus who wouldn't want to create their own daughterfu?

When I look back overall on this episode I think there is a lot of subtext as well. Lal was human towards the end but her body could not cope with being it. Hell she knew she was deliberately being bitchy towards the Admiral and knew he deservered it. The bit about Lal programing becoming one with Data explains why Data starts to show far more human characteristics later on.

Episode 17 - Sins of the Father

>9/10

While I am not so sure about the first part of this episode Kurn is definitely great. Klingons to this point on TNG have always come up a bit flat and almost caricatures of themselves apart from that season 1 episode. Kurn comes across as the geniune article, i.e. he's not fucking about and means business. You get the impression that if you crossed him he would indeed throw you out of the airlock whether or not the door was actually open.

The next part is when they go to Qo'nos, it's basically our first look at the Kliingon Home World. I think the atmosphere is very interesting; it's an ancient and traditional society but not all is as it would appear, and it is a very dangerous place not so because of risk of fatal headbutting but of treachy afoot. While there has been glimpses to internal troubles within the Empire before this episode literaly spells it out. The Empire is constantly a stonethrow away from Civil War and has major internal issues that need resolved.

Above all though what this episode adds more than anything is depth to the Klingon race. Not all Klingons are two dimensional. Some would give a Romulan a run for their money. K'mpec sees the bigger picture and tries to stop this shitshow from unfolding. Overall adds a nice lair of complexity to the show and setups a good story arc to come.

Episode 19 - Captain's Holiday

>4/10

I think I am being extremely generous here, if only cause of Vash and Picard punching a Ferengi in the face. The episode was clearly a filler episode with a plot that was at best, a complete mess. Nothing was really explained and the time traveling ayys from the future felt lazy in an IP that overdoes the shit out of time travel if I am honest. I had no idea what they were searching for or why it was vaulable, except Picard needed to kill some time and they wanted an excuse to expose his chest hair on screen. Some fetish I am not seeing here anons?

Episode 20 - Tin Man

>3/10

Not the most terrible of episodes but I do feel that not enough of it is explained. If I was honest I was kind of bored shitless during this episode which is impressive since it featured Romulans and a Space Turd Creature. I think I am coming to the conclusion that all episodes that focus on the issue of telepaths are kind of terrible.

Episode 21 - Hollow Pursuits

>4/10

While the later part of this episode is relatively decent I feel the early portion drags a lot and brings it down. Barclay grows on you as the episode goes along as he is that awkard unsociable neet that everyone watching this show is, so he's someone to relate to. Plus he puts the holodeck to good use without it trying to kill everyone. Overall it slips and slides at the start before getting a grip towards the end. Not bad, but not great.

Episode 22 - The Most Toys

>6/10

I am giving this a very generous score more so cause this episode is a huge leap forward for Data as a character and the performance of the space gypsy was somewhat decent. Everything else about this episode though felt a bit lacking. Turns out all it takes for Data to emote is to be introduced to a bunch of space faring gypsies who hail from the planet Zimbabwe and then he's instantly on a crusade to genocide them all.

Not sure how to describe this episode. It's a blatant filler episode but one with some good performances. To describe it in a nutshell is that Spock's dad has space alzheimers and it's causing everyone ot go crazy. I'd normally say there's no point watching it but the actors showing a wider range of emotions than normally would be displayed is good to watch. Plus Wesley gets slapped in this episode. Also notice how whenever Crusher gets serious she is always drinking tea?

My favourite scene in Sins of the Father was when Kurn and Duras had their conversation in the tunnels. Kurn demonstrated with his line of "He is my brother! I will not betray him!" that a) he believes in honour as much as Worf does, and b) he's got absolutely massive steel balls. He was alone and surrounded by Duras' goons and about to be killed and he knew it, and he STILL didn't hesitate to tell Duras to go fuck himself.

Klingons are not afraid of dying. In fact, their religion looks down on people who don't die in battle. Their Kobayashi Maru simulation isn't even about death, it's about having to choose between your duty and your honor.

You missed the entire point of that episode. It was about how the "honourable fearless Klingon warrior" reputation is largely bullshit, that Klingons are as wildly varied in terms of personality as humans are, and that the "noble warriors" running the Empire are happy to pull all sorts of cowardly dishonourable crap to advance their own power ambitions.

Having Kurn actually living up to the Klingon ideals in the midst of all this cowardly secret-assassination politicking just emphasizes his fundamental honour and courage.

No, it was about the Klingon war against the dishonorable. Klingons in TOS were portrayed as underhanded and untrustworthy in the extreme. Episodes like that one established the Klingon concepts of honor. DS9 went to a 'they're hypocrites' model which latecomers assume is gospel. The definitive Klingon portrayal is Klingon Academy.

>Klingons in TOS were portrayed as underhanded and untrustworthy in the extreme.

Actually, TOS Klingons were quite varied in personality. Kor in "Errand of Mercy" was quite respectful towards a Kirk, who he recognized as a fellow warrior, even though Kirk was a POW. Krell in "A Private Little War" was doing what any punchclock intelligence officer of a meddling superpower would do with a third-world nation in a strategic location. Kang in "Day of the Dove" was a straight-up counterpart of Kirk: intelligent, willing to fight when necessary, able to keep self-control when appropriate, and focused on saving the lives of his crew. Koloth in "Trouble With Tribbles" was a smug asshole all-around.

>The definitive Klingon portrayal is Klingon Academy.

What the everloving shit is this autistic faggotry? Trek books and games are merely fanfiction, ranging from "cancer tier" at worst, to "forgettable" at best. As far as I'm concerned, if it wasn't in a movie or TV episode, then it doesn't exist.

You should probably learn what you are talking about. It is a full movie with Christopher Plummer playing Chang and David Warner playing Gorkon. DC Fontana wrote the script.

Casting Christopher Plummer and David Warner does not automatically equal "quality story". They're good actors, but they're also willing and eager to cash paycheques. They'll act in anything if you've got the cash.

As for 2000-era DC Fontana, she wasn't exactly riding a wave of success at that point, writing one-off episodes for kid's cartoons. You know another 2000-era project that had DC Fontana as a writer and a famous and talented actor like Malcolm McDowell in a lead role? "Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys".

Anon, Klingon Academy is exceptionally well done and considered canon. It's uses scripts designed for a proposed Klingon series that if wasn't for budget reasons, would have made it to the screen. It's a great game as well. If you want to miss out on something glorious then that's sad on you.

Nevermind the fact it's considered one of the best SPACE games ever made.

Episode 24 - Ménage à Troi

>5/10

Say some scenes are definitely a 6 or even a 7/10 but overall it's 5. It's an enjoyable episode with some fun acting in it. Lwaxana is enjoyable to watch in this and here to call Troi out that she needs to get her life in order. I do love the implications here though that the Federation cannot patrol it's space and worse still, cannot defend what is later revealed to be a core world from someone kidnapping their citizens.

>3/10

Might be rating it a bit highly if I am honest but it is an enjoyable watch. Despite being absolutely fucking retarded. Basically it's about Space Jesus ascending and Geordi getting laid. Two things that break this episode for me. One is the fact they wait till they are on a planet's surface without any protective gear on to determine if the environment is safe. Second is that random weapon that made the crew choke itself to death, it was so retarded and made no sense. Say nothing of the horrid effects at end.

Episode 26 - The Best of Both Worlds Part 1

>6/10

I don't think this episode was that great if I am honest. The tone was certainly good and it was quite spooky and even scary as the crew looked in geniune peril. Furthermore the stakes felt real. What lets it down is that it sort of drags a little and some rather confusing scenes in hindsight. Stewart looks insanely bored in this episode for most scenes as if he is just waiting for his contract to be over which probably isn't far from the truth, so is performance isn't as strong as it usually is. It's the first of what becomes a Trek tradition for a while in that it's a two parter episode at the season finale that leads onto the next season. This particular one doesn't exactly work as they build up suspense at the end but you really know their weapon at end is going to fail, otherwise they would have a two parter with the second half with a lot of empty space.

On the other hand, Wil Riker being established as a overweight, stalled-out has-been with depression and low-T is perfect because it's persistent and they don't really have to do anything later to remind us of it. It's self-evident. Unfortunately, they subvert it later on with frosted frakes flash-forward plots that show him as a captain and later admiral, which really was never going to happen. He might have achieved the rank of Captain, like Spock and Scotty did - but he'd never have his own command. He's a terminal first officer.

>like Spock and Scotty did

I'd like to think they tried to give Scotty numerous commands over they years and he just kept telling them to shove it

>TNG films are canon

welcome to /strek/ newfriend! those late-tng era ships are objectively terrible

Scotty was command qualified since TOS. He was more likely to have his own ship over Dr. Crusher and so many others but he was retirement age by the end of Star Trek VI. I dont buy him getting his own command either.

Pretty consistently terrible ratings. The episode with data's "daughter" in particular, it was just boring and dull besides being seriously stupid, with her constantly "learning" things she should've already known as well as spontaneously generating opinions while feigning "neutrality" (though I guess this is just a general flaw in the concept of Data's character to begin with, to be fair).

Also it's moral is shit, in that it implies a complex machine spontaneously becomes a person (an idiotic and naive opinion), as well as having a big-league stupid and perverse ending. The only entertaining bit of the episode is when the admiral arrives and starts talking some damn sense. Of course Picard starts with some sense as well, but soon enough he's parroting the position of the slack-jawed fool mesmerized by the magical computer machine. And if we forgot for a moment that a computer being conscious because of it's great number of processors makes as much sense as a motor being conscious because of it's great number of gears, that just makes the ending worse; well my daughter died, but that's okay, because I absorbed her mind into my own! This is some really sick shit, who thought that that should be the parting moment of cold comfort?

But besides that, some of the most atrociously shit taste I've ever seen. Bad ratings across the board, great episodes rated low (the defector was brilliant), shit episodes rated high ("The Picard, the Picard wants me to do this arbitrary nonsense! This is an accurate depiction of how myths and religions developed, not just a gay fedora pop-psych meme!" episode was terrible; same story as lal: gay, boring, stupid, etc). Incredible that you could be so wrong so consistently, well done.

But overall unironically good thread, thanks for taking the time to put it together.

I designed my rating scale just to trigger you anon.

>Data's Daughter is boring and dull

I think you missed the point of the episode incredibly. The ending I do agree was a bit dumb and I felt tacted on as it'd be too much a hit of the feels.

>Defector is good

It's good if you don't think about the episode at all but once you use a small modicum of brain power it completely unravels itself. There are far too many glaring plotholes that pop up that make absolutely zero sense unless the writers are blatantly admitting that Starfleet is a completely incompetent organization that would be unable to wipe it's own ass without assistance which might be true considering my feelings on Starfleet but it's a really tough pill to swallow

I am debating whether or not to continue onto Season 4 and do a writeup for Season 3 overall.
