ca0085 No.26012 [Last50 Posts]
For fags that have not read the previous thread I basically rewatch TNG while making dumping reaction pics and webms. The plan was to keep it all in one thread but it was getting very cluttered so going to make a thread for each so fags know what content is which. As always if you have a request for a scene to be screencapped/webm'd let me know and I will keep an eye out for it, but please only requests for Season 2 of TNG. If you have a Season 1 request use previous thread.
Rating Scale
My intention was in the last thread to just dump content and shitpost but it grew into a more of a mini-review of each episode. My scoring system might seem a little harsh at first but there is a reason for that; mainly I do not believe in throwing out high grades unless it is truly deserving and if you do it sort of cheapens scoring. To sum up in an example; while most fags would probably give an okay episode a 6 or 7 out of 10 I would tend to give it a 4.
Ratings Explained:
>0-1
Truly awful and do yourself a favor and avoid watching an episode with this rating.
>2-3
Bad episodes that while you could suffer through there is no real need for you to put yourself through such torture.
>4-5
The pass mark. Decent episodes that are okay but you really won't be upset if you miss them.
>6-7
Good episodes that are worth a watch. There is not really any reason to avoid them.
>8+
Truly great episodes that you must watch.

Well I took a break from this for a week cause I honestly thought this was going to be a terrible slog. I think after just one episode I think I was right to do so. If there is one faint glimmer of hope is that there seems to be the potential for a waifu watch this Season.
Episode 1 - The Child:
>2/10
I was very nearly tempted to give this a 1 but I feel that was unfair. It was a bad episode and would have been downright terrible if it weren't for the facial expressions making this an unintentionally funny episode. Literally Worf and Riker's faces carry this episode. Despite it being the infamous rape baby episode it wasn't truly awful, just boring. It sort of half-asses the explanation of why Crusher isn't there yet Wheatboy is and doesn't even seem to bother to try and introduce the new characters. Overall a bad way to start the season.

I think the dick character for this episode was played by a Canadian. He is always apologizing for being an ass. Also a wild Whoopi Goldberg appears! who seems to actually be telling Wesley to get lost most of this episode than trying to get him to stay

Seriously so many reaction pics this episode. One thing I will note in greater detail when I get onto webms cause I felt they needed webm'd was how much of a fucking cunt Pulaski is. She is literally thrown on screen with no introduction to her character and she starts being a complete bitch to Data for no apparent reason. Data should download the pimp program.

This also seems to be the first appearance of transporter O'Brien where his first long march into misery and suffering begins.
There also seems to be regret on everyone's faces this episode from every actor as if they knew it was a bad episode before they began filming but were forced to do it anyway.

Now going back to Pulaski and why she is a fucking cunt. Answering >>26018 there is being human and then there is what can only be described as being mean. If Pulaski had more introduction and interaction with the crew first perhaps these scenes could be forgiven but to have this thrown out immediately is a tad uncalled for.

Episode 2 - Where Silence Has Lease
>5/10
I probably rated this one a little harshly. This episode started out slow and I was sleeping through it at first but actually as time went on this got a lot more interesting. The only problem this episode has is that the god entity trope has already been played to death in Season 1 with Q and this episode suffers for it despite raising have some decent points and scenes in the episode. It is interesting how when it comes to situations like this Picard takes shit absolutely from nobody. Overall has some good scenes for OC and some fairly decent acting at times, but it is not something you haven't seen before. Apart from that hideious makeup from Space Pepe.

Episode 3 - Elementary, Dear Data
>6/10
I think I might have been generous with this episode. Yes it's a holodeck episode. Yes it's blatantly just a Sherlock Holmes episode with a Trek theme. But it is fun to watch with some interesting characters. It felt like this episode needed more time and there were scenes that felt rushed but overall it's a good episode and actually fleshes out Pulaski a little at least giving her reason for being a cunt towards Data. Plus all these faces and suspicious shit in the background.

Episode 4 - The Outrageous Okona
>7/10
This episode is great if you take it as it is, a blatant shitpost. Actually works rather well with some unintentional comedy gold if you take some scenes heavily out of context. The only thing that brings this down overall is the Data trying to learn comedy B story which overall is cringe at best despite providing some good reaction pics. Okona is clearly a Han Solo ripoff but he kind of works here. It would have been interesting if he challenged Riker to a pussy snorkling contest and maybe even reappeared in later episodes but it sadly never happened.

I only gave this one a 3/10.
There was a really interesting scene where Data asks Picard "What is death", and Picard replies with a quasi-religious answer - "Considering the marvelous complexity of the universe, its clockwork perfection, its balances of this against that, matter, energy, gravitation, time, dimension, I believe that our existence must be more than either of these philosophies. That what we are goes beyond Euclidean or other "practical" measuring systems, and that our existence is part of a reality beyond what we understand now as reality.".
I always thought Roddenberry didn't want religion portrayed in Star Trek, particularly in the federation.

Episode 7 - Unnatural Selection
>1/10
I was going to give this episode a 2 but after reviewing all my material for it I got angrier about it. If you want an episode to sum up everything wrong about Pulaski as a character this is the episode for you. Everything is sort of forced and out the blue, it insults your intelligence and feels awkwardly out of place, worst of all there isn't really much to do. Plus she randomly wants to bang Picard for whatever reason. This episode would be passable if it were just boring but it's worse than that. It has several redflags. It was painfully obvious that Pulaski was going to get infected by the aging disease and even more obvious they would find a way to cure it. But that's not the worse part, the worse part is the kids. Genetically engineered super kinder which totally aren't going to turn into the next Khan are they? Did the person who wrote this episode ever watch Star Trek before at all? Also what was their obsession with seeing naked boys?

Probably cause it managed to introduce a character more annoying than Wesley. It managed to produce a dull Klingon episode and everything felt a bit low budget, out of place and almost a complete mess in certain aspects. I gave The Outrageous Okona an outrageous score because it is a legit entertaining episode and worth a watch. I feel the fags who shit on this episode are the ones who shit on Lwaxana for petty rather than legit reasons. Still the score might be a bit high here because my expectations of Season 2 were so low I might have been overly surprised to find episodes I enjoyed.
Anyway back to episodes
Episode 10 - The Dauphin
>4/10
This episode is sort of all over the place in terms of bad and terrible with some good scenes in between. If I was to say anything this episode is so bad it's good. It has a very low budget quality feel to it especially with the costumes. Holy fuck the costumes. Episode does focus on Wesley but it's probably the only passable Wesley episode cause it doesn't focus on him being an insufferable shit. It's more him dealing with typical boyhood love story; boy meets /monster/ girl, /monster/ girl guardian wants to eat him, /monster/ girl turns out to be energy matter covered in Riker's semen since it seems he got there first. Typical stuff.

I wanted to like this episode I really did. Unfortunately I feel like it missed it's mark hard. Felt like it ran a bit out of budget halfway through the episode. Perhaps there was infighting in the script department or something. It felt like they were hyping up the Iconicans a little but then they sort of failed to deliever at the end. To sum up in a nutshell this episode made me feel a little blueballed and that's what brings it down.

I think I am being a bit overly harsh here but this episode screams at me of being an attempt at having a holodeck episode but not doing so because they didn't want the holodeck to get old. This is a blatant filler episode felt ripped from TOS that has been done so many times before. Nothing really about this was interesting apart from some potential reaction images. It was one of the more memorable episodes of Season 2 although Season 2 has so far been a sea of shit. If you don't find The Outrageous Okana at the least bit enjoyable chances are you've never watched a TOS episode.
>>26621
I probably have given the first 4 episodes higher scores than they deserve in hindsight. I am finding a lot of issues with consistency in the show, with characters and what has been established previously.
I think I have been harsh on The Royale but I probably should mention TOS bias there since it's something that was done to death on TOS also why Unnatural Selection pisses me off so much, it's a bad copy of an earlier TOS episode that takes everything Trek has established before out the window I don't think Royale should ever be higher than a 4.
I believe you are overly harsh on Dauphin. There's some good scenes and performances there. Everything else lets it down.
So far though TNG Season 2 reeks of TOS and not in a good way. A lot of these are blatant reject scripts and some episodes are bad clones of TOS episodes.

That's because that's exactly what it was. Gene Roddenberry still had creative control. He was suffering full-scale George Lucas Syndrome at that point. He'd drank the koolaid that he was somehow a visionary creator, and the people he worked with in TOS and who were the REAL talent behind TOS and stopped his worst ideas from making it to the screen were no longer around to tell him "no".
Roddenberry was gone by season 3, and it very clearly shows.

>10/10
I can't really struggle to find a major flaw in this episode apart from the typical plothole point if Quinan knew about the Borg then why didn't she mentiont them till now. I think a lot of the impact of this episode is lost since I knew it was coming but if you were watching this for the time and following the show it would have been a massive surprise compared to what had been shown before. Q is good, provides an excellent lesson and seems to be developing a geniune concern for humanity. It's also nice to see the crew taken down a notch and brought down to reality. The Borg are intimidating and work so much better than any villain that has been shown before that the crew had struggled to beat; since most times it's the usual god entity trope that they have to beat the same old way each time, with the Borg there's a horrifying reality to their pressence, they aren't gods, they are a physical force and there is countless numbers of them. It's the one time where the situation truly has been hopeless.

I think I might be overly harsh here. This is going to be like Pen Pals in that there's a good episode here waiting to come out. Especially the fleshing out of Picard's youth. Sadly the rest of the episode was fucking retarded. You know how fags like to say Worf is terrible at his job? It couldn't be further from the truth. Worf is the only person who does his job. The whole situation with the Pakleds should never have been allowed to develop in the first place. Worf was right that they should have been careful but worse is when Troi appears saying they were up to no good, were about to make trouble in the neighbourhood, they should have transported Geordi's ass to Bel-Air. Not just ran with it till he got phaserblasted worse than O'Brien on his wedding night. The whole crew apart from Worf was incompetent. In fact where the hell was Troi in the first place?

#4 there is one of the best moments of the series, when shit gets real. Q's not fucking around anymore, prancing around in costumes or summoning napoleonic pig-men. He's just calmly straight-up telling it like it is.
And the cinematography in this episode was god-tier. Why the hell didn't they keep doing the moody lighting and smooth camera movements? Don't get me wrong, I love TNG, but so much of the rest of the series had such dull bright even lighting with way too many lock-off shots. They built those sets huge for ease of camera movement, but almost never really took advantage of that. I know it takes more rehearsal time and re-takes, but it's so worth it.

It's the plotholes that sort of bring this episode down, like how the hell did the Feds not notice an old Klingon warship floating around several outposts and colonies even if it was running silent, chances are they would run into it. Even still episode probably wouldn't go higher than a 5 as it's a decent episode but isn't great. All down to really the script not being as strong as it could have been. It does at least introduce us to K'Ehleyr who is a much better Klingon than Worf despite being a halfbreed. In fact she even fights better than him.

>Is there any reason you're fixating on endings?
Sure. While there are bad endings in these cases the endings make the viewer basically go "What the actual fuck was the point of this episode?" and "Why the hell did we not focus on this instead?" They manage to completely unravel the entire episode In the fish Jihadist case it made me feel completely blueballed cause why the fuck were they trying to blow up a conference? What was their motive? Why did we just have an episode focused on Troi's mother going through menopause when they dropped this huge bombshell on us in virtually the last minute?

Data didn't ignore it for no good reason, he ignored it so that he could anonymously chat with a curious and naive little girl who he told to not to tell anyone about their secret conversations.

Episode 21 - Peak Performance
>6/10
Not a bad episode at all. It could have been a tiny bit stronger with some minor tweaks but nothing to sniff at. Zakdorn despite looking like a race of vicious old spinsters come across as overly annoying although do have some good scenes. There's some interesting character growth in this. Pol-aski suddenly likes Data a lot now which is growth we should have gotten to see more of during the series. Data also discovering he can lose even to a biological was both handled well and sort of badly with not enough time devoted to it. Ferengi weren't bad but not great either, just sort of there as if they picked some race at random though more and likely were desperate to have another stab at fixing the Ferengi. Ending was pretty good with Data deciding to change tactics to shitpost mode. Overall I would say this episode is a bit rushed in places and feels like there was a lot of content cut out. An extra 5 minutes would have brought this episode up a lot I feel.

They seem to have an actress of the week as an extra like Gene was letting call girls have minor parts on the show in exchange for certain services.

Yeah, shame she got the boot, I liked her more than Crusher. And IIRC she didn't "suddenly like Data," she just adapted her thinking of him as a soulless calculating machine to reason that this is a kind of thin a soulless calculating machine would be good at.

Episode 22 - Shades of Gray
>0/10
This is probably going to be one of my quickest writeups of an episode. In short there is no reason for this episode to exist. It's a fucking clip show episode. So in short if you have seen previous episodes there is no reason to see this episode at all. All because Riker initiated bad touch with a tree. It's also a Season finale and a really bad way to end a Season.

@8:20 Data says earth was recovering from World War III in the early 22nd century which contradicts the events of Enterprise.
@34:10 Geordie explains how he uses his visor to tell if someone's lying - how does Riker win him at poker?
Riker shoots the unborn clones destroying them, arguably revealing the Federation's view on abortion, I think this was an important political statement.

1/10 - Worst episode ever. I don't actually have a 0 on my ratings scale but if I did I would give this episode a 0. I think there was a writers strike on when this episode was made - actually I just checked Memory-alpha & it was due to budget reasons.

I was wracking my brain for five minutes, determined to come up with a clever response noting an even worse all-time-low Trek episode.
But yeah, I think it really is the worst. There's nothing redeeming about it whatsoever. I'd rather marathon Spock's Brain, Threshold, Move Along Home, and A Night In Sickbay before I watch Shades of Gray. I don't think it can ever be topped.
