Why U.S. Wars in the Middle East Are Far from Over

Despite what appears to be a terminal decline of US influence over the Middle East, Washington has no intentions of gracefully abandoning its aspirations of regional hegemony.

Air strikes carried out against Syria by Washington’s Israeli proxies, a mysterious explosion near Tehran, and the current Iraqi Prime Minister’s decision to round up leaders of Iranian-backed militias who helped defeat the self-proclaimed “Islamic State” (ISIS) unfolded in quick succession in an apparent coordinated campaign aimed at Iran and its allies.

The Washington DC-based Al Monitor in an article titled, “Suspected Israeli airstrikes hit various locations in Syria,” would claim:

Suspected Israeli airstrikes hit Syrian military and Iran-backed militia sites Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. There are differing reports on the casualties.

This morning’s aerial assault targeted Syrian military sites outside the central city of Hama.

Days later, under orders by Iraq’s new prime minister – Mustafa Al-Kadhimi – Iraqi security forces raided the headquarters of an Iranian-backed militia detaining several leaders.

Reuters in its article, “Iraqi forces raid Iran-backed militia base, detain commanders: government sources,” would claim:

Iraqi security forces raided a headquarters belonging to a powerful Iran-backed militia in southern Baghdad late on Thursday, seized rockets and detained three commanders of the group, two Iraqi government officials said.

The officials said the militia group targeted was the Iran-backed Kataib Hezbollah, which U.S. officials have accused of firing rockets at bases hosting U.S. troops and other facilities in Iraq.

Iraq has been under significant pressure from the US to roll back growing ties with Iran and still hosts thousands of US troops illegally occupying its territory as well as a myriad of militant groups the US and its regional allies back either openly or covertly including Al Qaeda and ISIS itself.

More recently, a massive explosion took place just southeast of Iran’s capital, Tehran. While Iranian officials claim it was an accident at a civilian gas storage facility, pro-war elements across the West have insisted it was the result of an attack on a military complex located in the region.

Should it turn out to be an attack – US proxies – either Israel or US-backed terrorists operating inside Iran are most likely responsible representing a strategy laid out by US policymakers as early as 2009 in their own papers – particularly and explicitly in the Brookings Institution’s 2009 paper, “Which Path to Persia? Options for a New American Strategy Toward Iran” (PDF) under chapters including, “Allowing or Encouraging an Israeli Military Strike,” and “Inspiring an Insurgency: Supporting Iranian Minority And Opposition Groups.”

The timing of the explosion, following two highly provocative moves made against Iran and its allies in the region suggest the US is attempting to escalate tensions with Iran to save its fading influence in the Middle East.

New Iraqi Prime Minister’s Checkered Past

Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi took office in May 2020.

While he has warned about deepening relations with Iran he has concurrently stated the importance of US backing – despite the US having illegally invaded, destroyed, and since occupied Iraq starting in 2003.

His past – including his exile in London and his US National Endowment for Democracy (NED) linked Iraq Memory Foundation as well as his regular contributions to the above mentioned Washington DC-based Al Monitor call into serious question his ability to protect Iraq’s sovereignty as well as Iraq’s best interests.

On the Iraq Memory Foundation’s own website under “About,” it admits its genesis as a spin-off of a US NED funded Harvard-based front called the Iraq Research and Documentation Project (IRDP). The website claims (emphasis added):

The Memory Foundation is an outgrowth of the Iraq Research and Documentation Project (IRDP), founded by Kanan Makiya at the Center of Middle East Studies at Harvard University in 1992. In 1993, the IRDP developed a plan to create an archive that would organize and preserve the documents already in its possession for more long-term scholarly purposes. Utilizing a 1993 grant from the Bradley Foundation, followed by a 1994 bridging grant from the National Endowment for Democracy, the IRDP began its work processing the small collection of documents in Makiya’s personal possession and transcribing interviews conducted with Iraqi refugees. The IRDP continued to receive and process small datasets over the next ten years.

Who are the prosecutors for Benjamin Netanyahu's bribery trial?

The prosecutors expected to run Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trial are lesser known but potentially as powerful.

The prosecutors expected to run Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trial are not Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit and former state attorney Shai Nitzan. They are lesser known but potentially as powerful Deputy State Attorney Liat Ben Ari, Tel Aviv Economic Crimes Division Deputy Chief Yonatan Tadmor and Securities Crimes Chief Yehudit Tirosh.

Ben Ari is leading the team and argued on behalf of the prosecution at the opening of Netanyahu’s trial on May 24.

In court, she speaks with an obvious sense of confidence and seniority. This is something she has earned as the lead prosecutor against former prime minister Ehud Olmert during the Holyland trial in the Tel Aviv District Court.

At the same time, she is not nearly as aggressive and confrontational as former prosecutor Uri Korb, who prosecuted Olmert in the separate Jerusalem corruption trial.

Tadmor is a bit more aggressive when it comes to confronting witnesses. It is possible that he may handle some key cross-examinations even if Ben Ari gives the opening statement and makes the main strategic decisions.

In May 2017, Ben Ari made waves at an Israel Bar Association event when she gave the first hint that Netanyahu could be indicted in Case 1000, “the Illegal Gifts Affair,” even if there was no “quid pro quo,” meaning he did not give anything back directly in return.

More specifically, she said, "there is no such thing as gifts that are too small" to criminally investigate.

“When we are referring to presents worth hundreds of thousands of shekels,” she continued, “it is hard for me to accept that we are talking solely about presents between friends… I know that about myself and my friends, none of us receive presents of that value.”

Her statement was especially significant because it came around eight months before the police recommended indicting Netanyahu.

It was also long before the prime minister was even a suspect in Case 4000, “the Bezeq-Walla Affair” – the case which tipped Mandelblit over into being ready to confront Netanyahu.

From the beginning, this statement (despite Justice Ministry spokespeople attempts to qualify it) and any leaked reports made it clear that Ben Ari was taking a harsher stance on Netanyahu and on the question of bribery than the attorney general.

Even in the final indictment, Mandelblit rejected Ben Ari’s recommendation to indict Netanyahu for bribery in all three cases. Instead, he settled for the lesser charges of fraud and breach of trust in Cases 1000 and 2000, the latter which is known as the “Yediot Ahronot-Yisrael Hayom Affair.”

Four People Charged for Allegedly Trying to Topple Andrew Jackson Statue

Four individuals who allegedly attempted to topple a statue of Andrew Jackson near the White House were charged Friday with the destruction of federal property, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced Saturday.

The suspects — Connor Matthew Judd, 20, of Washington, D.C.; Graham Lloyd, 37, of Maine; Ryan Lane, 37, of Maryland; and 47-year-old Virginia resident Lee Michael Cantrell — are said to have tried both damaging and yanking down the Jackson statue with other unidentified people on June 22.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C. stated of the alleged incident:

The complaint further alleges that Cantrell was captured on video attempting to pry the statue off its base with a wooden board and trying to pull the statue down with the aid of a yellow strap. The complaint alleges that Judd is seen on video trying to pull down the statue, and that Lane is seen on video affixing a rope to one part of the statue and then pulling on another rope tied to the statue. The complaint also alleges that video of the incident shows Lloyd as he breaks off and destroys the wheels of cannons located at the base of the statue. Lloyd is also captured on video pulling on ropes in an effort to topple the statue, and handing a hammer to an unidentified individual involved in the incident. Judd was arrested on Friday and appeared in Superior Court of the District of Columbia today… The remaining defendants have not yet been apprehended.

“The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia will not stand idly by and allow our national monuments to be vandalized and destroyed,” Acting U.S. Attorney Michael R. Sherwin said in a statement. “This Office remains steadfast in its commitment to protect the sacred First Amendment right of individuals to peacefully protest, but these charges should serve as a warning to those who choose to desecrate the statues and monuments that adorn our nation’s capital: your violent behavior and criminal conduct will not be tolerated.”

The arrests came as the Department of Justice announced that Attorney General William Barr was creating a task force to targeting “anti-government extremists,” which will be spearheaded by Craig Carpenito, U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, and U.S. Attorney for the district of Northern Texas Erin Nealy Cox.

“Although these extremists profess a variety of ideologies, they are united in their opposition to the core constitutional values of a democratic society governed by law,” Barr wrote in a memo obtained by the Washington Post. “Some pretend to profess a message of freedom and progress, but they are in fact forces of anarchy, destruction, and coercion.”

Appearing Friday on Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) podcast The Verdict, Barr revealed the Joint Terrorism Task Force is undertaking 500 investigations into alleged violence in the wake of protests and violent unrest sparked by the death of George Floyd, an African-American man who died while in Minneapolis police custody.

“We’ve had scores of indictments so far for such things as arson, destruction of federal property. We have right now about 500 investigations underway, so it’s picking up pace,” the attorney general said. “We are committed to holding accountable the people who engaged in this.”

“We are seeing strong evidence of coordination in many of these violent episodes” he added.

On Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at protecting federal monuments across the country.

“I just had the privilege of signing a very strong Executive Order protecting American Monuments, Memorials, and Statues – and combatting recent Criminal Violence,” the president tweeted. “Long prison terms for these lawless acts against our Great Country!”

We, the People, of Ventura County and of all of California, demand the immediate resignation of Dr. Robert Levin from Ventura Public Health. He is clearly in breach of the “supremacy clause” and our unalienable rights. Dr. Levin has also perjured and or breached his oath of office. His words in the video embedded and transcribed here (SEE: ca-ir.org/levin-transcript/) have committed the act of Treason against the U.S. and California Constitutions. An apology for his clearly-stated threat is not enough, as his actions have caused harm to many, and they risk setting an extremely dangerous precedent.

As per the Title 18 U.S.C.A.§ 2383 Dr. Levin is to “be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.” Under what authority can he disregard State and Federal protections for the People for whom he serves? If in fact he claims he is operating under emergency orders, then he himself, as a public official loses his constitutional authority. Cooper v. Aaron, 358 U.S. 1, 78 S.Ct. 1401 (1958). For now, there is still a due process of law and Dr. Robert Levin has to be held accountable to it. No perceived or manufactured emergency can override or suspend the U.S. Constitution or the Peoples' protected rights under the constitution.

Furthermore, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Scheuer v. Rhodes, 416 U.S. 232, 94 S.Ct.1683, 1687 (1974) states that “The State has no power to impart to him any immunity from responsibility to the supreme authority of the United States." In Ex parte Young, 209 U. S. 123 (1908), under the color of state law, when an officer acts to contravene the Federal Constitution, he "comes into conflict with the superior authority of that Constitution, and he is, in that case, stripped of his official or representative character, and is subjected in his person to the consequences of his individual conduct. The State has no power to impart to him any immunity from responsibility to the supreme authority of the United States." CONSEQUENTLY WE DEMAND THAT DR. ROBERT LEVIN BE HELD PERSONALLY LIABLE FOR HIS ACTIONS AND REMOVED FROM OFFICE IMMEDIATELY.

Likewise those supporting Dr. Levin will also need to be removed from office due to his overt suggestion of violations of the Hobbs Act. Extortion of the Peoples' "property". Our rights are "property", and cannot be extorted by threats or use of force. See 18 U.S.C. § 1503, which provides, a conviction for extortion within the meaning of the Hobbs Act requires that the Defendants obtained “property” or “liberty” from another, with his consent, induced by wrongful use of actual or threatened force, or fear, or under color of official right, done "under color of official right".

Further Dr. Levin's has perjured and or breached his sworn oath of office in violation to the United States Constitution and in doing so violated 18 U.S.C. § 1951 relating to interference with commerce, robbery, or extortion; and, further engaged in a Conspiracy to Racketeer in violation of section 1951 of section 1961 and 1962(d).

For purposes of this section, description of “under color of official right”, the Supreme Court held that the "under color of official right" prong of the Hobbs Act could be used to prosecute political corruption as long as there was a quid pro quo. See McCormick v. United States, 500 U.S. 257 (1991). See also United States v. Giles, 246 F.3d 966 (7th Cir. 2001) (holding that the quid pro quo requirement of McCormick applies outside the campaign contribution context); Peter D. Hardy, The Emerging Role of the Quid Pro Quo Requirement in Public Corruption Prosecutions Under the Hobbs Act, 28 U. Mich. J.L. Reform 409 (1995). In Evans v. United States (1992), the Court held that no affirmative act of inducement is required on the part of the public official.

Dr. Levin's actions so far constitute a violation of one or more of the prohibited overt acts under 18 U.S.C. §1961 (Racketeering) and 18 U.S.C. § 1962(c) (Conspiracy to racketeer). Please be so advised that a “R.I.C.O.” enterprise may include. United States v. Clark, 646 F.2d1259 (8th Cir. 1981), holding that a governmental agency can be a RICO enterprise, and listed several, including examples: the office of county judge to be an enterprise under the “RICO” Act and any other government agencies or offices; United States v. Altomare, 625 F.2d 5, 7, n.7 (4th Cir. 1980), the office of county prosecutor; United States v. Grzywacz, 603 F.2d 682, 686 (7th Cir.1979), the city police department.

Who changed Dr. Levin’s mind about wearing masks? Where’s the science?

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. - An interesting message from the top health expert in Ventura County Wednesday [April 29, 2020 ], explaining why he hasn't ordered people to wear masks in public.

Public Health Officer Dr. Robert Levin said there was very little science to support face coverings and even some research opposing its use.

Levin said the Public Health Department recently studied mask usage in Ventura County.

A nurse monitored 100 people at six different grocery and big box stores.

Of the 600 people monitored in total, just 6 percent were not wearing masks. About 55 percent were wearing N-95 and surgical procedure masks, which concerned Levin.

"This is precisely the problem with mask wearing. People are taking masks away from health professionals who need them," said Levin.

He said ultimately everyone needs to make their own decision on whether to wear masks or face coverings, but they should not be using medical-grade masks.

"You're left with choosing between 'I will wear a cloth mask' or 'I will choose not to wear a mask.' I don't think wearing a medical-grade mask is an option," said Levin.

Should We All Be Wearing Face Masks? Here's Why Experts Are So Conflicted

We have reviewed the results of more than a dozen randomised trials of face masks and transmission of respiratory illnesses. We found the current best evidence suggests wearing a mask to avoid viral respiratory infections such as COVID-19 offers minimal protection, if any.

Conflicting recommendations

Two of the world's major health organisations disagree on mask wearing. The World Health Organisation (WHO) currently discourages mask use:

There is currently no evidence that wearing a mask (whether medical or other types) by healthy persons in the wider community setting, including universal community masking, can prevent them from infection with respiratory viruses, including COVID-19.

WHO does recommend special masks (N95 masks or equivalent) plus other protection for health-care workers working with people who have, or are suspected to have, COVID-19.

By contrast, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States has recently recommended everyone wear a (cloth) mask. However, this is to prevent infected people passing on the infection, not to prevent the wearer getting infected.

Who is right? Does wearing a mask protect the wearer? Does it protect others?

Current best evidence

To resolve this question, we analysed 14 randomised trials of mask wearing and infection for influenza-like illnesses. (There are no randomised trials involving COVID-19 itself, so the best we can do is look at similar diseases.)

When we combined the results of these trials that studied the effect of masks versus no masks in health-care workers and the general population, they did not show that wearing masks leads to any substantial reduction of influenza-like illness. However, the studies were too small to rule out a minor effect for masks.

Why don't masks protect the wearer?

There are several possible reasons why masks don't offer significant protection. First, masks may not do much without eye protection. We know from animal and laboratory experiments that influenza or other coronaviruses can enter the eyes and travel to the nose and into the respiratory system.

While standard and special masks provide incomplete protection, special masks combined with goggles appear to provide complete protection in laboratory experiments. However, there are no studies in real-world situations measuring the results of combined mask and eyewear.

The apparent minimal impact of wearing masks might also be because people didn't use them properly. For example, one study found less than half of the participants wore them "most of the time". People may also wear masks inappropriately, or touch a contaminated part of the mask when removing it and transfer the virus to their hand, then their eyes and thus to the nose.

Masks may also provide afalse sense of security, meaning wearers might do riskier things such as going into crowded spaces and places.

Do masks protect others?

Could masks protect others from the virus that might have been spread by the mask wearer? A recent Hong Kong laboratory study found some evidence masks may prevent the spread of viruses from the wearer.

They took people with influenza-like symptoms, gave half of them masks and half no masks, and for 30 minutes collected viruses from the air they breathed out, including coughs.

Masks did reduce the amounts of droplets and aerosols containing detectable amounts of virus. But only 17 of the 111 subjects had a coronavirus, and these were not the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. While the study is promising, it needs to be repeated urgently.

We also don't know how this reduction of aerosols and droplets translates to reduction of infections in the real world. If there is an effect, it may be diluted by several factors such as ill people who don't wear a mask and "well" people who have no symptoms but are still carrying and spreading the virus.

Masks for some?

If wearing masks does substantially reduce the spread of the infection to others, what should we do? We could ask everyone with any respiratory symptoms to wear masks in public. That could supplement other strategies such as social distancing, testing, tracking and tracing to reduce transmission. “The USA has gone so crazy in these months of the coronavirus freak-out that an orgy of looting, arson, and murder, on top of epic job loss and business failure, propelled the stock markets up-up-and-away back to near-record highs. Makes sense, right? The market came down a bit towards the end of the week, but don’t worry. The Fed will make another announcement that it’s going to do something or other and presto, the market will be off to the races again.

In the background of these weeks of protests, riots, looting, and arson is the disintegrating economy, which signifies that pretty much everybody in this land will not be able to keep on keeping on in the ways we’re used to.

Reduced Living Standards: Everybody will have a harder time making a living. Everybody will endure shocking losses in wealth, status, and comfort. And, sadly, everybody will be too perplexed and bamboozled by the rush of events to understand why. The short version of that story is we’ve overshot our resources, especially the basic energy resources that all other activities require. This mystifies the public, too, but you can boil it down to the cost of getting oil out of the ground being too high for customers and not high enough for the oil producers to cover their costs – a quandary.

One result has been the rapid bankruptcy of the shale oil industry. Another is the incremental impoverishment of what used to be America’s broad middle-class – a malady that has, just for now, fenced off the denizens of Wall Street, the notorious One Percent (of the population), who still luxuriate in zooming share prices and dividends while everybody else sucks wind in a ditch with-or-without the added affliction of Covid-19.

The perplexed and bamboozled include the entire leadership nucleus of the land, who seem starkly unable to act coherently in the tightening vortex of crisis.

Piling on More Debt: While Mr. Trump seems to dimly apprehend the urgent need for economic restructuring, he’s able to express it only in messages that sound like a 1961 Frigidaire commercial, with overtones of Marvel Comics superhero grandiosity. The president may understand that a country can’t consume stuff without producing stuff, but he doesn’t get that it’s too late to bring back all that activity at the scale we used to run it when he was a young man in the 1960s.

His answer to the call of restructuring – what the Soviets called perestroika before they fell apart – is to pile on more debt, that is, borrow more from the future to pay for hamburgers today. That dovetails neatly with the needs of the financial community, led by the hapless “Jay” Powell at the Federal Reserve, who is on a mission to destroy the U.S. dollar in order to save the banking system and its auxiliaries in the stock markets.

He literally doesn’t know what to do – except “print” more dollars to support share prices, a symbolic talisman of theoretical economics that has less and less to do with what people actually do on-the-ground in the hours when they’re not sleeping. It looks unlikely that the Fed will rescue either Wall Street or Main Street. The longer he props up the former at the expense of the latter, the more certain it is that it will provoke insurrection that goes well beyond the current hostilities.

James Comey miniseries moved to air before 2020 election after director complains

Showtime's The Comey Rule, based on the former FBI director's memoir, A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership, was teased earlier this month by the company after it shared ominous photographs of actors Brendan Gleeson as President Trump and Jeff Daniels, star of Dumb and Dumber, as the former FBI director. Comey was fired by Trump in May 2017. Other characters in the show include former acting Attorney General Sally Yates, former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and special counsel Robert Mueller, who investigated Russian interference in the 2016 election.
