Astor was of German stock, born Johann Jakob Astor on July 17, 1763, in Walldorf near Heidelberg. His father was Johann Jacob Astor, a butcher, and his mother was Maria Magdalena vom Berg. In 1779, at the age of 16,he went to Londonto join his older brother George to work for an uncle at his piano and flute factory, Astor & Broadwood. He and her daughter by the same name married in 1785. He had gone to NY to work for his older brother Henry in his butcher shop, but on the voyage there he had met a fur trader. He soon established his own shop in NY in the late 1780s, while also working as a representative of his uncle's musical instrument factory. The discovery of gold impelled him to branch out around the country. Apparently, fur trading was really his cover/side job, as he seemed to be gathering intelligence for the British while maintaining contacts with French Canadians. Here’s Is Why The Entire Stock Market Will Crash! This Is The Worst Economy In My Lifetime

Short selling the current stock market, which has seen ups and downs like never before throughout the health crisis, seems like a financial disaster waiting to happen, loading up on risk at a time when many people can’t even afford to pay their monthly rents.

According to Wolf Richter via WolfStreet.com; one investor has just put his money where his mouth is by shorting the world’s largest exchange-traded fund, the SPDR S&P 500 Trust ETF, predicting that in a few months, it will all be worth it.

Short selling is a risk-heavy trading strategy in which an investor will bet on the decline of a particular stock. They borrow shares of that stock that they anticipate will go down in value by a particular date. The investor then sells off these shares to buyers at market price, but before the borrowed shares must be returned, they count on a continual decline in price, eventually allowing the investor to buy the shares back at a lower cost.

When done correctly, short selling can reap substantial rewards. On the other hand, when predictions turn out to be wrong, the practice can be absolutely devastating. After all, the potential for loss on a short sale is essentially unlimited, as the price of any asset can rise indefinitely.

At the time of this particular investor’s move, the stock market had carried out what was being called the “greatest 50-day rally in history.” Against all odds, the S&P 500 index jumped an incredible 47 percent from the intraday low on March 23, when it bottomed out at 2,192 to the close on June 8 when it hit 3,232.

Since then, the market has dipped here and there but generally remained consistent. This comes even amidst the greatest economic turmoil people have seen in decades, marked by historic rates of unemployment, a string of high-profile bankruptcy declarations, and of course a raging pandemic now cropping up in second waves even in places that had started to see a slowdown in cases.

However, the explanation for it all is really quite simple. It’s an institution that has come under fire again and again for their handling, or mishandling, of the health crisis’ economic consequences. Enter, the Fed. The Federal Reserve has been printing money at record rates during the pandemic. Between March 11 and June 17 alone, a period of a little over four months, the Fed printed $2.8 trillion and pushed it into US markets. The vast majority of that injection–$2.3 trillion–was printed just in the first month. This move was entirely unprecedented, and no one seemed to stop and consider the eventual fallout it would cause.

With so much money flowing in, investors took off on a wild goose chase, going after anything, like those junk bonds sold by struggling cruise lines and airlines whose revenues had plunged 80 or 90 percent. With the Fed’s injections getting circulated, stock prices responded by spiking up.

Unfortunately for us all, while the Fed was talking about all the asset purchase programs it was planning to establish, it actually cut back on the overall level of its purchases.

In the week that ended on June 10, the Fed’s total assets of $7.1 trillion increased by less than $4 billion. And in the following week, ending on June 17, its total assets fell by $74 billion.

Essentially, the Fed carried out the majority of its quantitative easing in March and April, and then strategically backed off. That means it has since cut back on the number of government bonds or other financial assets it was buying. These purchases were the reason the Fed has been able to inject so much money into the failing US economy to expand economic activity, especially as consumer purchases were way down.

Furthermore, the Fed’s new tactic has moved its lending and asset purchases away from propping up financial markets toward propping up consumption by states and businesses, and ultimately toward propping up spending by individual consumers. These funds are flowing into consumption rather than asset prices.

So the institution responsible for the printing of $2.8 trillion in new money, that then got pushed into the market, has stopped propping up asset prices.

This leaves the market, following its historic 50-day rally, to now stand on its own in the face of a collapsed economy, widespread business failure, and record unemployment.

Shorting the greatest stock market rally of all time? Maybe not the worst idea after all.

The Israeli military struck Hamas military posts Friday night after two rockets were fired towards southern Israel just days after Hamas warned against Jerusalem’s intentions to annex parts of the West Bank and Jordan Valley.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit confirmed that the two rockets were fired towards Israeli territory and according to Adi Me’eri, the spokesperson of the Shaare HaNegev regional council, one rocket fell in open territory causing no damage or injuries.

The other one is believed to have fallen inside the Gaza Strip.

Incoming rocket sirens sounded in the Shaar HaNegev communities of Nir Am, Gavi’im and the area of Sapir College around 9:00 p.m.

The IDF responded by firing shells towards a Hamas military post in Deir el Balah‬ in the central Gaza Strip. An hour later Israeli aircraft struck another military post east of Jabaliya as well as another target in Deir el Balah.

The attacks targeted a Hamas workshop which was building rockets, as well as infrastructure to create weapons.

On Thursday Hamas warned that Israel’s plans to extend sovereignty over parts of the West Bank would be akin to a declaration of war.

"This wretched decision and plan, we'll not talk at length, but say it shortly and clearly – the resistance considers the decision as a declaration of war on the Palestinian people,” said the spokesman of the Izz al-Deen al-Qassam Brigade, the armed wing of Hamas. “The resistance is ready to protect its people and its holy places.”

Earlier in the week, Kochavi warned that the plans to annex the West Bank could easily spread to tensions with the Gaza Strip.

Speaking to troops taking part in a military drill in northern Israel, Kochavi said that while they were preparing for fighting on one front, they may soon need to shift their attention towards another- the West Bank.

“You can find yourself in a few weeks in the Judea and Samaria area because of riots and terror,” he said. And while there have been months of relative quiet with the blockaded coastal enclave, “the upcoming events can develop into fighting in Gaza.”

The IDF has been preparing for the various scenarios for several months under the name “Shahar Beharim,” and according to reports Defense Minister Benny Gantz met with Kochavi, Shin Bet Director Nadav Argaman and Mossad Director Yossi Cohen on Thursday to discuss possible repercussions and the preparations made ahead of the move.

Channel 12 News later reported that the defense establishment was deeply divided on the possible ramifications, with Kochavi and senior IDF generals at odds with Cohen on whether there would be an outbreak of violence.

According to the report, which quoted ministers present during the meeting, Kochavi and Military Intelligence Chief Maj.-Gen. Tamir Hayman warning that there would be a rise in terror attacks, including a return of suicide bombings, targeting Israeli civilians and soldiers by Palestinians in the West Bank.

While Cohen dismissed the warnings of the military chiefs, Argaman was reported to have backed up the concern over a rise in violence but that it would not be as bad as the military warned due to the economic conditions felt by Palestinians.

But several defense officials and analysts have warned that the soaring unemployment in the West Bank is only another reason why a deadly outbreak of violence is expected should Israel follow through on annexation plans.

New Jersey attorney general charges local politicians in mail-in voter fraud case

A city councilman, a councilman-elect and two others have been charged

our New Jersey residents have been charged in a recent mail-in voter fraud case, with state's attorney general accusing them of multiple crimes including voting fraud, tampering with public records and unauthorized possession of multiple vote-by-mail ballots.

Fraud allegations have plagued the recent Patterson City Council special election in New Jersey, with three losing candidates last month demanding a recount after thousands of ballots were voided in the largely mail-in race.

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced Thursday that four people, one of them a Paterson city councilman and another a councilman-elect, have been charged with committing fraud during that election.

Grewal said the state would "not allow a small number of criminals to undermine the public’s confidence in our democratic process."

Paterson 1st Ward Councilman Michael Jackson, along with 3rd Ward Councilman-elect Alex Mendez, were charged with two other individuals in the case. The charges ranged from the unauthorized possession of ballots to election fraud to falsifying or tampering with records to tampering with public records.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy in March placed numerous restrictions on voting in the state due to the coronavirus, largely shifting much of the state's electoral activity for the time being to mail-in balloting.
