FREYA STARK’S EAST IS WEST, AND THE COPTS (II): RECRUITING COPTS TO THE BROTHERHOOD OF FREEDOM

On 5 March 2013, I wrote about Freya Stark’s East is West, and the Copts (i): the Innuendo about the Jews. Today, I would like to write about her recruitment of Copts to what was called The Brotherhood of Freedom ( ), which she set up in Egypt to combat the Nazi propaganda during WWII, particularly as the German army was posing a real threat of occupying the Middle-East, at the time occupied by Britain and France, as it marched across North Africa on its way to Egypt before El Alamein in 1942 put an end to its threat.

As a reminder, Freya Stark (1893 – 1993) was a British explorer and travel writer, and an Arabist, who was fluent in Arabic. During World War II (1939 – 1945) she worked for the British Ministry of Information; and was a member of the British Intelligence Service. Her work, as a war propagandist, was focused on contact with the peoples of the Middle-East and winning them over to the British side – in Yemen, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Transjordan and Iraq. In Egypt, she founded the Brotherhood of Freedom in Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, and many other cities – “a network of Allied sympathisers aimed at convincing the Egyptian people that they were better off with the British devil they knew than with the Axis monster they did not;”[1] and the membership of the movement reached some 75,000 strong.[2]

The Brotherhood of Freedom was supposed to recruit people who were for democracy represented by the Allies and against tyranny represented by the Axis. In Egypt, Stark’s target population was the Muslims and Arabs of Egypt: she met with the emerging middle-class of the effendis, but she made contact with everyone she thought would be influential and could be won over, even the students and graduates of Al-Azhar, the bastion of traditional Islam. To cajole them into joining her committees, Stark told them that Britain was the best friend of the Arabs; that her rule was not based on imperialism but common interests and ‘safe transit’; that she would support the movement for Arab unity; and that she would resist the Zionists’ claim to Palestine.[3]

Her view of the Arab World – North Africa (including Egypt) and what the Arabs call ‘the island of the Arabs’, the land bordered by Persia, Turkey, and the sea – is interesting: “In speaking of it, it is important to remember that its unity is one of language, largely of religion, and of the civilization they have produced; it is not a unity of race.”[4] Her definition is basically that of the Arab nationalists; and even when she says Arab unity is one “largely of religion” she adds a footnote to modify any misunderstanding she may have created: “Not entirely, since the Christians and most of the other minorities would consider themselves ‘Arab’ in the area referred to.”[5] Downgrading the separate identities of the Christians of the Middle-East was part of the game – and the game was to be as Arab as could be. The Copts in her estimation, formed one-fifteenth or so of the country’s population.[6] Their race was evident: “The Copts are most like the original people of Egypt; even now you can recognise their slender profiles and long-lashed black eyes, opaque and lustrous, in any pharaoh’s tomb.”[7] However, she adds: “They have kept the Christian religion taken from earlier conquerors, but they have long since adopted the Arabic language for ordinary conversation.”[8] One feels that, this, for her, seals the identity of the Copts – Arabs, whether they agree or not, like it or not.

Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are associated with reduced cardiovascular risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract

Background and aims

Chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) are widely used in patients with rheumatic diseases, but their effects on the cardiovascular system remain unclear. We aimed to assess whether CQ/HCQ could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Materials and methods

We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, Embase, and the ClinicalTrials.gov for studies investigating the association between CQ/HCQ and the risk of CVD from inception to 20 December 2017. We carried out the quality assessment using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS). Random-effects model was used to pool the risk estimates relative ratio (RR), hazard ratio (HR) or odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for the outcomes.

Results

A total of 19 studies (7 case-control studies, 12 cohort studies, and no clinical trials) involving 19,679 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled results for HRs or RRs showed that CQ/HCQ was associated with a significantly reduced risk of CVD (pooled RR 0.72, 95% CI 0.56–0.94, p=0.013). Results based on ORs showed a similar tendency towards a reduced risk of CVD with CQ/HCQ (pooled OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.25–0.69, p=0.001).

Conclusion

Our results suggested that CQ/HCQ was associated with a reduced risk of CVD in patients with rheumatic diseases. Randomized trials are needed to confirm the potential of CQ/HCQ in cardiovascular prevention in patients with and without rheumatic diseases.

Group that TRACKED protesters’ cell phones accuses them of spreading Covid-19 across US… even if they DIDN’T leave their cars

A Democrat-linked advocacy group is blaming the spread of Covid-19 on anti-lockdown protesters in the US after tracking their cell phones cross-country. Despite the tempting partisan narrative, though, many never left their cars. Anti-lockdown demonstrators traveled hundreds of miles to attend protests, almost certainly spreading the coronavirus to places where infections were rare, according to the Committee to Protect Medicare, a supposedly non-partisan group run by a former Democratic congressional candidate. The group provided a comprehensive analysis of smartphone location data from rallies in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Colorado and Florida to the Guardian on Monday.

While the Committee to Protect Medicare admitted it had no real evidence to support its claim that demonstrators were callously spreading the infection that has killed tens of thousands of people while paralyzing the world economy, “it’s hard to draw a straight line between devices, individuals at these protests, and cases,” executive director Rob Davidson acknowledged. They insisted the demonstrators’ behavior “carries a high risk of infection.” Virus transmission at some of those demonstrations would have been next to impossible, however, since protesters remained in their cars. Demonstrators at an “Operation Gridlock” protest in Denver in late April descended on the city en masse in their vehicles, waving signs and flags while deliberately snarling traffic as they demanded an end to Colorado Governor Jared Polis’ stay-at-home order. While some left their cars to picket the Capitol building, photos of the event suggested that even the majority of the sign-wavers maintained safe distances between each other. The demonstrators’ phones were tracked by mobile advertising firm VoteMap for 48 hours after they attended the anti-lockdown protests, revealing participants had in some cases traveled hundreds of miles, and even crossed state lines. While data analysts took care to specify that the location data had been taken only from apps in which the user had “opted in” to being tracked as part of the apps’ terms of service, it’s unlikely any of the protesters were aware that their locations were being tracked for use in a partisan smear campaign. VoteMap used anonymized data from hundreds of different apps to create its graphics. Many apps bury their authorization for use of location data deep in prohibitively-lengthy terms of service.

The Committee to Protect Medicare did not specify the dates of many of the demonstrations it tracked, other than the April 19 Denver protest – in which healthcare workers reportedly confronted the anti-lockdown demonstrators – and an April 30 protest in Lansing, Michigan that made international news after gun-toting demonstrators brought their weapons into the state capitol. Mainstream media have gone the extra mile to portray anti-lockdown protesters as gun-waving pro-Trump racists who don’t care about the common good, even when the reality does not quite live up to expectations. The same day the armed protesters “invaded” the capitol in Lansing, Covid-19 cases in Michigan increased by 1,191 – unrelated incidents the media nevertheless tried to connect. The state has recorded 4,891 deaths with coronavirus as of Sunday, with 42 percent of those in people over 80. Similarly, Colorado has logged 878 deaths specifically due to Covid-19, over half of them in people over 80 years old.

In terms of popular historical memory, we remember European men in the Middle East, such as archaeologists, spies, and diplomats concocting surreptitious treaties, but have forgotten the women who also engaged in such activities.

In terms of World War II spies, Laszlo Almasy will be remembered in popular historical memory as the inspiration for the main character in the film, The English Patient.

In fact, he was a Hungarian spy who actively aided Nazi Germany in Libya and in their campaign to take Egypt. It was a female British agent, Freya Stark, who tried to prevent Egypt from falling into German hands.

Stark's journeys to the Middle East began in 1927, when she travelled to Beirut, making her way to Baghdad, in the Mandate of Iraq, and by 1931 western Iran, reaching the long-fabled mountain fortress of the Assassins in the Elburz mountains.

In 1935, she travelled to the Hadhramaut in today's Yemen. Few Western travellers, never mind women, had gone into these parts of Iran or Yemen, risking the dangers of not so much bandits, but the environment and water-borne diseases.

Like Digby and Bell, she was fluent in Arabic, a talent that served her well during the Second World War in the British Ministry of Information.

She worked in Aden in southern Yemen, producing Arabic news broadcasts to counter Axis propaganda, and travelled to northern Yemen to meet with its ruler, the Imam, as a one-woman propaganda team to keep the kingdom neutral during the War.

In Egypt, she contributed to the Ikhwan al Hurriya (Brotherhood of Freedom), a propaganda network to persuade Arabs to rally behind the Allies, particularly as the Axis military were massing near El Alamein.

Her expeditions continued after the War, and her last, in in her old age, were to Afghanistan. She died in 1993 at 100 years old.

Born on October 14, 1906, in Al Mahmoudeya, a rural Nile Delta town in Al-Behaira Governate northwest of Cairo, Hassan al-Banna was the son of a local imam, who wrote books on Muslim traditions, and taught at the local Madrass, where Hassan later received his first lessons in Islam.

Just like Hamas, al-Qaeda, Islamic Jihad and ISIS, the Muslim Brotherhood base much of their ideology on the teachings of several educators and philosophers who were influenced by Adolf Hitler.

Such was al-Banna’s hero worship of the Nazi leader, he had Hitler’s autobiography and political anthology, Mein Kampf (My Struggle), translated into Arabic, changing the title to My Jihad.

Al-Banna was so obsessed with the Nazis, he also had copies of their anti-Semitic newspaper Der Sturmer, a tabloid published by the infamous Jew hating Julius Streicher, adapted to suit the Arab world, with its despicable anti-Semitic cartoons.

Throughout his leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood, al-Banna closely adhered to Hitler’s stance of eliminating all those that stood in the way of his party’s progression, his belief being that by removing all liberal opponents, and those wanting to see reform and change, it would make it easier to unite Arab society.

Along with the Nazi ideals that al-Banna incorporated into the Muslim Brotherhood, came an intense hatred of Jews, and a plan to eradicate all Jews in the Middle East.

Egypt's former grand mufti has recently said that the Muslim Brotherhood sent hundreds of its members to receive "training" from the Nazi regime in the 1940s.

Shiekh Ali Gomaa said on his religious television programme Wallahu Alam that the Brotherhood was originally founded as a proselytisation movement before it became a political party.

"For the 11 years before 1939 the Brotherhood were good and everyone supported them, after that they began training in Helwan, Tora and Natrun," the Shiekh said.

"They sent 700 members to train under Hitler. This came to light much later in documents released by German authorities," he added.

Gomaa said the Brotherhood had "changed its skin" from religious movement to a power hunger political party with ambitions of taking control of Egypt.

The former grand mufti has previously claimed that the Brotherhood's founder Hassan al-Banna coordinated with Hitler to establish a military wing with the help of Amin Hussein, the grand mufti of Jerusalem between 1921 and 1937.

Banna established the Muslim Brotherhood in 1928 as a grassroots movement. He later formed a military wing for the purposes of fighting the British occupation at the time and to take part in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.

The armed wing was later dissolved and the Brotherhood - which has recently been undergoing an internal struggle to maintain its condemnation of violent means - has continued to use a gradualist, peaceful approach to change.

Gomaa has previously made condemning statements against the Brotherhood and its members.

"The Muslim Brotherhood are the heretics of our age, and when we kill them, God, His angels and His Prophet are on our side," he said during the violent breakup of the sit-ins at Rabaa and al-Nahda squares.

He also said: "When we kill one protester, we are saving one hundred from among the people, because this person would have killed them."

He also recently said that Muslims must obey Egyptian President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi even if he is an unjust ruler.

The Brotherhood operated as an underground movement until the 2011 revolution that toppled President Hosni Mubarak and allowed the group to form a political wing, which won both the presidential elections and a majority of seats in parliament.

Since the ousting of Brotherhood leader and former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, Sisi has violently cracked down on the group by outlawing them as a terrorist organisation, arresting thousands of their members and handing death sentences to several of its leaders, including Morsi himself.

While Bill Gates has often been a target of assorted conspiracy theories in the past, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has ramped up interest in his persona. Kennedy who was otherwise close to Israel was furious with its ostensible nuclear weapons program, fearing that the Soviet Union could use it as leverage to maintain its influence in the Middle East.

Eshkol, caught off guard by the tone of the telegram, took seven weeks to assent, and the twice-yearly inspections continued until 1969 when President Richard Nixon ended them.

Also revealed in the trove of documents the NSA posted is the origin of Israel’s oft-repeated credo that it would not be the first to introduce nuclear weapons — a deliberately ambiguous statement that left Israel room to develop the weapons, but not arm them.

Shimon Peres, then the deputy defense minister who later would lead the country as prime minister for two stints and then become president, improvised the statement when he was surprised by Kennedy during a meeting Peres had scheduled with Kennedy’s adviser, Myer Feldman, who also functioned as the administration’s liaison to Israel and the U.S. Jewish community. Unbeknownst to Peres, Kennedy and Feldman had planned the “surprise” encounter.

According to a Hebrew-language Foreign Ministry of Israel account of the April 2 meeting, Kennedy asked Peres into the Oval Office for 30 minutes and questioned him on Israel’s nuclear capacity.

“You know that we follow very closely the discovery of any nuclear development in the region,” Kennedy said. “This could create a very dangerous situation. For this reason, we monitor your nuclear effort. What could you tell me about this?”

Peres improvised, “I can tell you most clearly that we will not introduce nuclear weapons to the region, and certainly we will not be the first.”

The whole point of the creation of nuclear weapons under the Manhattan Project was to destroy the “evil” Nazis who threatened the Rothschild economic stranglehold over Europe. Luckily for all Europeans, the Germans were defeated before the Jews could get their hands on any nukes, because Germany was the primary target for “the bomb”, not Japan, which had been making diplomatic overtures of surrender in early 1945.. So it was only natural that the Jews were going to arm their new State of Israel, just as they armed their co-ethnics in Soviet Russia, with nukes to keep the rest of the world in line.

The ever-naive Kennedy actually believed that he could tell the Jews that they would never have nuclear weapons as long as he was President. And despite his suspicions, he had no choice but to hire Myron Feldman, who acted as an Israeli spy in the White House, betraying JFK’s confidence to the Israelis. He should have known that the Jews would never accept a situation where they could not only defend themselves, but also threaten to destroy the entire planet if anyone seriously threatened the Jews, and that included their American “allies”, as the Kennedy family discovered not just once, but a number of times. And so this article serves as a “subtle” reminder to any world leaders today not the mess with Israel.

Kristol is by no means an economic conservative. He will accept anyone who will invade the Middle East. His magazine shut down because he is so focused on invading the Middle East and has no respect for American soldiers or the economy. His magazine, which was once influential, shut down because of this extremist neocon view. He has been against Trump solely because of his pulling back troops from the Middle East.

Kristol is by no means an economic conservative. He has openly said he is voting for Joe Biden. He knows Trump is against war and the Democrats will always engage in war if the price is right. Obama was given the peace prize for just being the first Black President. He then advocated invading Syria and numerous military actions. Obama was trying to carry out the agenda of the neocons.
