The Melbourne newspaper behind a controversial cartoon which depicted Serena Williams’ tantrum during the US Open women’s final has responded to critics with an extraordinary front page.
Cartoonist Mark Knight created international headlines on Tuesday after his drawing of Williams, which showed her stomping on her racket, was criticised by some as racist because of the way he drew the 23-time grand slam winner’s lips and hair.
Knight, and his employer, launched an immediate defence, arguing it was a depiction of the tennis star’s behaviour and had nothing to do with race.

The way the condemned hits the ground like a bag of rocks is super satisfying. I dunno, I find hanging to be insufficiently barbaric (even if it's done "incorrectly"), and the guillotine is disgusting. Beheading is disgusting. No matter what the person did, mutilating their corpse like that is not what we should try to become. A person that faces a firing squad can still be buried properly.
Judging sin is God's job. Ours is only to arrange the meeting. We bury our dead, we don't chop them up and play with the pieces like arabs.

In general, I believe that the West made a strategic mistake with regard to Syria, and the reason for this error is that Western countries look at the Middle East through the eyes of Israel. The Israeli lobby in Western capitals and, in particular, Washington is so great that they assess the situation in the region from the position of Israel and act in its, and not in their own, interests. They spent billions of dollars to overthrow the government of Bashar al Assad, but they did not achieve their goal, and are now paying for their 'blind' pro-Israeli policy.”

WASHINGTON – Less than two decades after the attacks of September 11, the U.S. government has now effectively allied with the Al Qaeda terrorist group it has long blamed for planning and executing those attacks, which still remain the worst terror attacks to have ever taken place on U.S. soil.
Despite the U.S. having launched the war in Afghanistan, the invasion and occupation of Iraq, and the years-long “War on Terror” as a means of allegedly countering Al Qaeda and its affiliates, the past year has revealed several instances in which Washington has been making “deals” with, protecting, and even (indirectly but knowingly) arming Al Qaeda operatives in countries like Yemen and Syria. The about-face has come as the U.S.’ interest in “counter-terrorism” throughout the Middle East has been superseded by regime-change policies targeting countries like Yemen, Syria and Iran.
Currently, the Syrian government and its allies have been preparing to begin a military offensive against the last rebel-held province in the country, a province that is openly dominated by Al Qaeda-linked groups — namely Al-Nusra Front, now known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Despite the fact that Al Qaeda’s presence in the area is well known, top U.S. government officials and even U.S. President Donald Trump have recently urged Syria to refrain from “recklessly” attacking the Idlib province, claiming that militants in the province are “not terrorists, but people fighting a civil war against a brutal dictator.”
Not only that, but the U.S. government has now openly made plans to attack the Syrian government if Al Qaeda affiliates in Idlib, including the controversial White Helmets group, make accusations against the Syrian government regarding the use of chemical weapons. Recent statements from U.S. officials show that the Trump administration is set to take Al Qaeda affiliates at their word and lay blame for any use of chemical weapons on the Syrian government, despite the fact that the U.S. government has admitted in the past that these very “rebel” groups possess chemical weapons themselves.
Furthermore, last July, Brett McGurk – the U.S. government’s Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL (Daesh, ISIS) – called Syria’s Idlib province “the largest Al Qaeda safe haven since 9/11, tied directly to Ayman al-Zawahiri [current leader of Al Qaeda].” He then immediately added that the Al Qaeda presence in Idlib was a “huge problem” and had been so “for some time.”
Since McGurk’s warning, Al Qaeda’s presence in Idlib has only grown, making recent comments from U.S. officials regarding Idlib’s “rebels” a clear example of the U.S. government seeking to defend the world’s current “largest Al Qaeda safe haven” despite continuing to blame the terror group for the September 11 attacks.
The dramatic change in roles for Al Qaeda in Syria from the U.S. perspective is the direct result of the U.S.’ “redefinition” of its objectives in the Syrian conflict, which now place regime change in Syria and Syria’s ally Iran above everything else, including the continued presence and growth of terrorist groups in the region.

Thornberry, speaking in parliament during a debate on the Syrian war, asked the government to hold any response to reports of chemical weapons attacks in areas controlled by the Al-Qaeda proxy, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a US-proscribed terrorist organisation.
HTS are thought to have some 10,000 fighters in the last rebel stronghold; Idlib province, a region in Syria’s north-west along the Turkish border.
Upon reports of a potential chemical attack, Thornberry urged the UK to wait “until the chemical weapons inspectors, the OPCW [Organization for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons], have visited those sites under the protection of the Turkish government, independently verified those reports and attributed responsibility for any chemical weapons used.
“Relying on so-called open source intelligence provided by proscribed terrorist groups is not an acceptable alternative,” she said.
In turn, Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt refused to be drawn on the UK’s response to any reported chemical attack in Idlib. “I’m not prepared to say what the United Kingdom’s detailed reaction might be or give any timescale.”
Later clarifying her position in a tweet, Thornberry wrote: “…if there are reports of a chemical weapons attack in Idlib over the coming weeks – the government must ensure the reports are independently verified and that Parliament has given its approval, before escalating British involvement in the war.”

As dimensions increase linearly surface area increases by a squared rate, mass increases by a cubic rate. In order to move mass, you must have an equal and opposite reaction force. But the 4th plane was doing a dive from 35,000ft. It would have been going nearly supersonic when it hit the ground. Every ounce would have been like a collection of bullets flying in formation. All or portions of at least four military installations along the East Coast have ordered evacuations in anticipation of Hurricane Florence, as the massive storm is expected to make landfall by Thursday.
Navy officials have authorized an emergency evacuation order in Virginia for personnel residing in Hampton Roads and Virginia Zone A of Naval Station Norfolk. The order follows the governor’s evacuation order for the same area and will remain in effect until Saturday.
“The safety of our personnel and their families is my top priority right now,” said Rear Adm. Charles Rock, the commander of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic. “Our mission is to support the fleet, fighter and family and the team at Navy Region Mid-Atlantic has been working around the clock to provide support and information during this very stressful time.”
The Air Force is evacuating Joint Base Charleston in South Carolina and has a limited evacuation order at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia, as announced on each base’s Facebook page. Both bases are following the lead of local and state evacuation orders, said Air Force Maj. Lindy Singleton. At Langley-Eustis, which sits near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, the order is for personnel who reside on Langley Air Force Base or in the Virginia Department of Emergency Management Evacuation Zone A.
The Air Force has ordered any personnel traveling to these bases to stay where they are. Officials are also monitoring Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina, Pope Field at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and the Washington, D.C. area, Singleton said. Some aircraft at Seymour Johnson and Langley have started to move to other locations.
Langley’s F-22 Raptors and T-38 Talon training jets began flying out Tuesday. They will fly to Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in central Ohio.
Air Force Col. Jason Hinds said in a statement that the base's facilities can withstand hurricane force winds. But he said there's no reason to risk any damage to the base's fleet of advanced F-22 fighter jets. About 100 personnel will travel to Ohio to support the jets.
At Fort Bragg, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has begun staging supplies at the post while soldiers and airmen are working to mitigate damage to infrastructure and military equipment, according to The Fayetteville Observer.
“Our number one priority is the safety and well-being of our soldiers, civilians and their families,” said Lt. Col. Mike Burns, a spokesman for the 18th Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg. “We understand that Hurricane Florence has the potential to impact our community and we are doing many of the things you would expect to prepare.”
Fort Bragg also is bracing for the storm and taking steps to mitigate any damage it might cause by clearing storm drains and inspecting other infrastructure. Burns said military vehicles and other equipment that could be damaged by the storm are being moved indoors when possible. A spokesman for the 82nd Airborne Division said they are preparing to move more than 80 helicopters to Georgia ahead of the storm and are working to fill fuel and water tanks.
On Monday, a mandatory evacuation of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, located along the southern portion of the South Carolina coast, was announced. Brig. Gen. James Glynn, commander Parris Island and the Eastern Recruiting Region, said the mandatory evacuation would begin at noon Tuesday. About 8,500 servicemembers are assigned to Parris Island.
“I have determined the safest course of action is to evacuate,” he said. “For everyone’s safety, I have issued the evacuation order well ahead of the storm in an effort to ensure everyone is able to seek refuge before the storm impacts the area.”
The Coast Guard also announced it is moving its cutters, aircraft and boats outside the projected path of the hurricane and all non-essential personnel will be evacuated. The service warned that during and in the immediate aftermath of the storm, it might not be available.
For example, Coast Guard Capt. Kevin Carroll, commander for Sector Hampton Roads at Portsmouth, Va., said Monday that its 29-foot response boat, 45-foot response boat, 87 coastal patrol boats and 270-foot cutter are being relocated to safer areas. In addition, the Coast Guard is taking steps to ensure its aircraft are safe, such as its C-130s and MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters out of Air Station Elizabeth City in North Carolina, by moving them to other locations.

Well, you don't usually use demo cord to break the beams. It has a very high propagation velocity but a lot of that energy would come outward. Cheeky bastard, Russia and Australia sign nuclear co-operation deal

A co-operation agreement in the field of nuclear energy has been signed by Sergey Kiriyenko, the head of Russia’s Rosatom, and Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer that will see Australia supply uranium to Russia for processing and for use at its power plants.
Kiriyenko said that under the terms of the agreement Russia is ready to process 4,000 tonnes of Australian uranium a year saying: “The possible contracts we are negotiating now are about 4,000 tons of uranium a year, which is not far from 1,000,000,000 Australian dollars ($826 million).”
Kiriyenko added that the agreement will give Russia as much uranium as it wants, and will strongly enhance its uranium enrichment potential. The agreement may bring low-enriched uranium supply contracts with Japan worth $2 billion within 2008–2015, some $400 million with Europe, and $300 - $400 million with the United States, said Aleksey Grigoryev, acting director general of Russian uranium firm Techsnabexport (Tenex).
However, Grigoryev added: “We have made no natural uranium purchase contracts with Australia yet, we just have a framework agreement.”
The agreement also states that Russia may provide Australia with technological assistance if it decides to develop its own nuclear power sector.
The parliaments of both countries are expected to ratify the agreement by mid-2008.

What most people do not seem to understand is the mass/surface area problem.
As dimensions increase, surface area increases by a squared ratio while mass increases by a cubic ratio. This is why large buildings can't simply be concrete slabs stacked ever higher and building design, itself, has to be completely re-thought.
The steel of the WTC losing even 10% of its rated strength from heating would be enough to create concerns.
But any time you heat and cool metals, you run into problems with the crystalline structure. Just ask any bladesmith.
If a section of steel within a beam is heated and then cooled, the temper of that section of steel can be altered. What was once a very hard yet flexible tooling wonder-steel can now be weaker than aluminum and have a nasty propency to shear as opposed to flex.
While this is unlikely the case in structural steel to see such a radical change in properties from re-tempering, one must also rember that the building was at the limits of its own design theorem. It was designed to support itself and had a buffer to deal with tragedy. The construction deviated from print by using bolts in the joists rather than welds, and it was quite possible that the building would not have survived what it was designed to withstand on paper. Although that was still the era where engineers liked to over-engineer.

The reason I went digging for anything on Infrasound/WTC is because back in the late 70s, early 80s, my OH (an engineer) read an article in New Scientist about how infrasound can reduce buildings to dust. Detonation cord should not be thought of as an explosive.
It is a thin plastic tube that has PETN dust on the inside of it. Think of it as an extremely, extremely, extremely high-speed fuse (It "burns" at 14317 miles per hour) which is powerful enough to set off high explosives without the use of a primer\detonator.
It does not really have enough power to destroy steel structure on its own, and would not really ever be used that way.
