Astronomers found a mysterious object beyond Neptune, and it could be a new dwarf planet

“My first reaction was one of excited disbelief."

The powerful Vera Rubin Observatory has spotted what seems to be a dwarf planet circling the sun in the frigid depths beyond Neptune.

The icy object, known as 2026 ED138, is likely between 600 and 1500 kilometers (373 to 972 miles) wide, scientists say.

It's therefore probably big enough to be sculpted into a sphere by its own gravity — a key characteristic that separates dwarf planets from asteroids and other small space rocks.

And if 2026 ED138 is indeed a dwarf planet, that's a pretty big deal, as astronomers have confirmed just five of them to date: Pluto, Ceres, Eris, Haumea and Makemake.

2026 ED138 was discovered by Matthew Holman, who works at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA).

The big moment came on Oct. 13, when Holman was running previously collected Rubin data through a search code that he developed with his CfA colleague Kevin Napier.

That search revealed a mysterious object beyond Neptune's orbit. Despite its immense distance from the sun, this body was relatively bright, suggesting that it's larger than the average trans-Neptunian object.

"My first reaction was one of excited disbelief," Holman said in a statement on Tuesday (Oct. 27), the day the discovery of 2026 ED138 was announced. "Objects like this are very rare, so I immediately started checking whether I or the code had done something wrong."

Those checks involved a thorough search through Rubin's catalog. And that catalog is pretty heft, even though Rubin is a pretty new scope.

The Vera Rubin Observatory sits atop Cerro Pachón, an 8,799-foot-tall (2,682 meters) mountain in northern Chile, and features a primary mirror 28 feet (8.4 m) wide.

The scope achieved first light in April 2025 and began its main project, the 10-year-long Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), in June of this year.

During the LSST, Rubin images the entire southern sky every few days using a 3.2-gigapixel camera, the largest digital camera ever built for astronomy. This work creates a high-resolution time-lapse "movie" that can reveal a great deal about the cosmos.

For example, astronomers think Rubin will shed light on dark energy and dark matter, the mysterious stuff that together makes up most of the universe's mass-energy budget.

Its observations will also serve as a solar system inventory, helping scientists map out our cosmic backyard like never before. Rubin has already discovered more than 11,000 new asteroids, for example, with many more surely to come.

The LSST inventory will likely include a number of new dwarf planets as well — including, possibly, 2026 ED138.

For the object definitely exists: Holman and his colleague Mario Jurić, who works at the University of Washington and serves as Rubin Solar System Lead Scientist, found that Rubin spotted 2026 ED138 30 separate times on 20 nights between March 4 and July 11 of this year.

And further digging revealed that the Dark Energy Camera (DEC), an instrument on the Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile, also spotted 2026 ED138. Indeed, DEC observations of the object go all the way back to 2016.

The data show that 2026 ED138's orbit is tilted by about 25 degrees relative to the plane of the solar system. It therefore likely had a gravitational interaction with Neptune, which knocked it off kilter, scientists say.

2026 ED138 currently lies about 46 astronomical units (AU) from the sun. (One AU is the Earth-sun distance — about 93 million miles, or 150 million kilometers). This puts it beyond Pluto's average distance from the sun, which is roughly 40 AU.

There is still much to learn about the object, however. For example, we won't know whether or not it's a dwarf planet until astronomers nail down its size.

And that will require observations in infrared light, the range of wavelengths that NASA's James Webb Space Telescope is optimized for.

So stay tuned: There's doubtless more news about 2026 ED138 coming, and Rubin could turn up more worlds like it in the coming months and years.

"If confirmed as a dwarf planet, ED138 would join a very small family of worlds," Holman said. "Rubin will image the whole southern sky again and again for 10 years, so any others hiding in the places earlier surveys skipped are now within reach."

Virgin Galactic is finally revealing its new Delta-class spaceship this week

Space tourists and citizen astronauts rejoice! A new suborbital spacecraft is about to be introduced that will fly ticketholders on brief, suborbital journeys just above Earth.

Virgin Galactic plans to unveil its first Delta-class spaceship on Wednesday (Oct. 28), before transporting the spacecraft from Mesa, Arizona, to Spaceport America in New Mexico.

Alongside that reveal, the company will also announce the spacecraft's name, selected through a public vote held across more than 80 countries.

Following its debut, the Delta-class vehicle will journey to the spaceport attached to Virgin Galactic's VMS Eve carrier aircraft, marking a transition from assembly to the beginning of official flight testing.

"The arrival of our lead Spaceship at Spaceport America will be an enormous milestone in a years-long journey to build the world's first human spaceship platform designed for regular commercial spaceflight," said Virgin Galactic CEO Michael Colglazier in a statement.

Virgin Galactic is targeting mid-2027 for the spacecraft's first commercial spaceflight. Simultaneously, the company is also working on a second Delta-class vehicle, which it hopes to enter into service before the end of next year.

And, with the first Delta vehicle leaving the nest, the company's Mesa factory is shifting focus to the completion of the second which will lead to structural testing and preparations for its rocket engine assembly.

Virgin Galactic announced its Delta manufacturing plans in 2022, initially anticipating research flights to begin in late 2025 and passenger service in 2026. Those plans have since run into multiple delays.

The company said its revised schedule allows for the additional time needed to integrate and validate the spacecraft's avionics software, with final testing to take place at Spaceport America.

Its Delta vehicle will replace Virgin's earlier spaceplane model, VSS Unity, which began operations in June 2023, and completed seven commercial missions before its final flight on June 8, 2024.

Virgin suspended Unity's commercial flights to concentrate on developing the next-generation fleet, which is designed to carry more passengers and fly considerably more frequently.

Each Delta-class vehicle is equipped to accommodate up to six passengers, compared with Unity's four, and is expected to complete as many as eight spaceflights per month — more than 10 times the rate Virgin was flying Unity.

When Virgin Galactic began selling seats aboard its planned spaceplane in 2004, tickets cost about $200,000 apiece. By 2014, nearly 700 people had reserved spots on future flights.

Now, more than 100 of those future space travelers are beginning their initial preparations, with additional ticketholders expected to follow as the company works toward operating two spaceships by the second half of 2027.

Virgin Galactic plans to share live updates during Wednesday's transport flight, weather and technical conditions permitting, and provide further details about its upcoming flight tests during its November earnings call.

Here’s What China’s Mysterious Spaceplane Actually Looks Like

A U.S. intelligence report provides a rare view of the experimental vehicle in orbit, and it's unsurprisingly familiar.

For years, China’s secretive spaceplane has flown through Earth orbit as a shadowy figure, releasing unidentified objects and pulling off some strange maneuvers.

Now, a newly released high-resolution photograph gives us our clearest look yet at the mysterious spacecraft—one of China’s most guarded spaceflight endeavors.

The image was taken in 2024 by a commercial imaging satellite owned by Maxar Technologies, which specializes in geospatial intelligence.

It was then quietly released by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in its latest unclassified report titled “Challenges to Security in Space.”

Compared to previous glimpses of China’s spaceplane in orbit, the new photo finally gives us a detailed view of the experimental vehicle’s design, which appears quite similar to the U.S. Space Force’s own X-37B spaceplane.

Secret missions

China’s spaceplane, dubbed Shenlong (or Divine Dragon), made its orbital debut in 2020, launching for a brief, two-day mission before landing back at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert.

The spacecraft’s follow-up missions lasted for a significantly longer time in orbit. The spaceplane launched in August 2022 and spent 276 days in Earth orbit, and then again in December 2023 for a 268-day-long mission.

The spaceplane is currently on its fourth mission, which launched on February 7.

Over the course of its missions, Shenlong carried out different orbital maneuvers, as well as capture and docking operations, formation flying, and vertical takeoff and horizontal landing.

The spaceplane has also released unidentified objects during its time in orbit, some of which even emitted various signals while in orbit.

China has not announced or confirmed the deployment of these objects even after they were cataloged by the U.S. military.

Nowhere to hide

Although the DIA report doesn’t list any new information about Shenlong’s activities in orbit, the photo does offer some new details about the experimental spacecraft.

The Chinese spaceplane is outfitted with delta wings, a heat shield for atmospheric re-entry, a central payload bay, and a rear-facing tail extension with solar panels deployed on each side.

Like the Space Force’s X-37B, it resembles a smaller version of NASA’s Space Shuttle. The two spaceplanes have small wings and twin vertical tails and launch inside the payload shroud of a rocket, operating as a satellite in Earth orbit before reentering the atmosphere for a runway landing at the end of the mission.

China’s spaceplane is a product of the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, a state-owned manufacturer that makes both civilian and military space launch vehicles.

Throughout Shenlong’s development, China has shared little information about the technical aspects of its spaceplane or its purpose.

While the recently released image will likely not prompt transparency on China’s side, it does offer a better look at its mysterious spacecraft.

Putin made the remarks on Wednesday while touring an exhibition of Russian technological innovations, where Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadayev briefed him on Rassvet (“Dawn”), a domestically developed satellite internet system designed to compete with Musk’s SpaceX network.

“Elon Musk is a genius, a real genius,” Putin said, noting that the American entrepreneur has more than 5,000 satellites in orbit.

Russia was “proud” to have begun building its own satellite network “independently,” he added.

Moscow also maintains “close contact with American partners,” including Musk, to prevent interference between satellites, according to the Russian president.

Both sides value this cooperation and continue working closely despite political issues, with Russia’s space agency Roscosmos and other companies involved, he said.

According to Shadayev, the Rassvet constellation already has more than 30 satellites in orbit.

Developed by Russian aerospace companyBureau 1440, part of IKS Holding, the network began with experimental satellite launches in 2023 and 2024. Another 32 spacecraft were launched in 2026, with plans to expand the constellation to 292 satellites by the end of 2027 and around 900 by 2035.

“We have only taken the first step. But what matters is that it has been taken,” Putin said. “Now we need to move from quality to quantity,” he added.

Judge Alvin Hellerstein died of natural causes, the court said

Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who was overseeing the case against former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, died at the age of 92 on Tuesday.

Hellerstein had served as a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York since 1998, after being appointed by then-President Bill Clinton. He had also presided over President Donald Trump's attempts to move his New York criminal case from state courts to federal courts.

A blind Ukrainian man was allegedly held for days at a conscription center despite being clearly unfit for military service, according to court papers.

The case, reported by Ukrainian media on Wednesday, stems from a complaint filed by the unidentified man with a district court in Odessa seeking an official investigation. A judge ruled in his favor last week, ordering the authorities to look into the allegations, a decision that was made public shortly afterward.

According to the complaint, the man has been visually impaired since childhood and was exempted from military service as early as 1994, with his status reaffirmed in 2020 and 2023. Despite this, he says draft officials refused to recognize his condition and held him for almost five days.

He was allegedly seized on a street in Odessa in March, held incommunicado without being formally booked, and released only after intervention by his lawyer.

The regional branch of the State Bureau of Investigation, which had earlier refused to register his complaint, was ordered by the court to reverse that decision. The man had separately secured a court ruling ordering his removal from a list of people wanted for draft evasion.

Kiev relies on compulsory mobilization of fighting-age men to sustain its war effort against Russia, but the campaign has been marred by widespread corruption among draft officials and public perceptions that the system is deeply unfair. The government has responded to draft evasion with heavy-handed enforcement that has repeatedly involved the illegal use of force by military officials.

Illegal detention at recruitment centers has become a recurring problem, according to the office of Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmitry Lubinets.

In one high-profile case reported by Lubinets in June,21 men were found to have been illegally held in poor conditions at a conscription center in Uzhgorod, some for more than 50 days.

In another case, the three-day detention of 39-year-old Aleksey Ivanko at a Kharkov recruitment center in May 2025ended with him jumping from a third-floor window to his death. Lubinets said in his annual report that his office found no evidence Ivanko had been physically abused by draft officials, but concluded there had been no legal grounds to restrict his freedom and that the prolonged confinement had contributed to the circumstances of his death.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised US entrepreneur Elon Musk as a “real genius” while hailing the launch of Russia’s Starlink rival, Rassvet.

Putin made the remarks on Wednesday while touring an exhibition of Russian technological innovations, where Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadayev briefed him on Rassvet (“Dawn”), a domestically developed satellite internet system designed to compete with Musk’s SpaceX network.

“Elon Musk is a genius, a real genius,” Putin said, noting that the American entrepreneur has more than 5,000 satellites in orbit.

Russia was “proud” to have begun building its own satellite network “independently,” he added.

Moscow also maintains “close contact with American partners,” including Musk, to prevent interference between satellites, according to the Russian president.

Both sides value this cooperation and continue working closely despite political issues, with Russia’s space agency Roscosmos and other companies involved, he said.

According to Shadayev, the Rassvet constellation already has more than 30 satellites in orbit.

Developed by Russian aerospace company Bureau 1440, part of IKS Holding, the network began with experimental satellite launches in 2023 and 2024.

Another 32 spacecraft were launched in 2026, with plans to expand the constellation to 292 satellites by the end of 2027 and around 900 by 2035.

“We have only taken the first step. But what matters is that it has been taken,” Putin said. “Now we need to move from quality to quantity,” he added.
